Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're back with Dan Hurley. The Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches show.
Dan going into the mailbag a little bit here. I
kind of collect these comments from fans my various meanderings
around the arenas, et cetera. I got a couple of
good ones for you. One of them came from We're
gonna get this straighter, Oh Tom from Milford. He's got

(00:22):
a good memory, and it's going to bring up a
bad memory. So stick with me here, they said. He
asked me if did Malachai Smith apologize to you when
he got to campus after Dayton had dumped Yukon and
the Maui Invitational.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
No, he has not apologized to you know whatever. You know,
fan that is, and I'm not going to comment. You
know what happened for both teams after that. Uh, you
know the season didn't end in Maui. That was the
thing about Maui. You know, like the season did keep
going on after Maui, and we were, I guess at

(01:02):
least able to you know, stabilize from that point, you know,
from a positive standpoint, and you know, beat beat Baylor
at home, beat a couple NCAA tournament teams, beat Texas
on the road and Beacon Zaga at the garden. So
so whoever asked that question, I would say that I
I think we probably responded, you know, well to Maui.

(01:26):
We probably responded better than Malachi did to Maui.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
You know.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
All right, here's the other one, Brian from Maybe they
celebrated too much after.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
That they did it. They were pretty excited.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
I could hear him. They were in the locker room.
They were well, I don't want to say a locker
room next.

Speaker 3 (01:43):
Door, because it's no locker rooms. It's pretty bad. That was.

Speaker 1 (01:49):
All right, Brian from Avon. He's been following, you know,
Braylon Mullins trying to get back on the court, et cetera.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
And he was he was.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
Reading about, you know, Drew Hurley working out against Braylan
on the court, trying to you know, make him take
tough shots and all this stuff. But he wanted to
know if Brayln Mullins has been schooling Drew Hurley here
on the return back to the court.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
Yeah, I mean I I I in one way as
a father, I hope not because you don't want to
see your your your your kid do badly. But then
as a coach, I would probably be hoping that that's happening,
because this is a guy that we need that should
be able to do very well versus our gas if

(02:32):
we're going to have any success.

Speaker 1 (02:34):
All right, good answer, all right, Damari Silas Demery hard
me thirty minutes the other day point guard extraordinary? Really
you when you go ten, ten and ten as kind
of what you want to do if you're the guy
with the ball in your hands all the time. What'd
you make of that game by Silas the other night
against Bryan, Yeah, I.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
Mean he's seeing things obviously pretty well.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
I think there's there's a handful of op opportunities assists
that we're just left on the table where he didn't
see the roller or he didn't see the three point shooter.
There were finishes at the rim. I just think, you know,
it's awesome. I mean it's like the kid is, you know,
really acclimating to what we want him to be here,

(03:19):
and you know he's I think he's it's just doing
a great job of pushing himself to be what we
need him to be. And I think that as coaches
and all of us in this building, you know, I
think we give ourselves credit for the you know, for
the things that we do well, but we're also you know,

(03:40):
honest with ourselves when there's opportunities to either play or
coach better. And I think in his mind that was
a game where maybe it should have been seventeen points
fourteen assists.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
He and rebands, you know, so I think, you know,
you make sure as a coach that you let the
player know.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
That he's given you a lot and that you appreciate
his efforts, but that there's uh, there's definitely opportunities and
plays to be made out there that we're missing on.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
All Right.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
Up ahead is Illinois a day after Thanksgiving. I know
you were talking about having turkey on Wednesday so you
could recover and be ready to roll on Friday. But
this team, this Illinois team, I mean, it looks like
a EuroBasket roster. I'm looking at you know, guys from Montenegro, Greece,
San Juan, Puerto Rico, Croatia.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Probably a few of them have played professionally already as
teenagers in Europe because he went to academies over there.
This is a different kind of challenge, isn't it. Playing
a team like this is kind of an older group.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
It looks like, yeah, I mean older physical, you know,
you using the you know, I think the portal extremely well,
you know, with with you know, players like that have
now been in the program with them or you know,
going and getting the Stoyakovic or you know, getting you know,
heigh school age, high school level recruits internationally that that

(05:05):
have great experience playing against men that are like college
basketball ready.

Speaker 3 (05:10):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
It's really you know, it's really an impressive roster and
the there it fits really well. I think their construction
is great. I think they've got crazy size and shooting
and skill and you know, I think it's on film.
I've seen almost every team in the country play. I

(05:33):
think they have as much as almost anyone from a
from a talent standpoint, from a size standpoint, from a
depth standpoint, you know, from a coaching standpoint.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
I think, you know, they're very well rounded.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
Yeah, David Mrkovich words number zero for them. He's a
freshman forward six'. Nine he averages eighteen a. Game you Mentioned,
stoyakovich he averages seventeen a. Game they also have A
Keaton Wagler. WEGLER i think it is he's averaging sixteen a.
Game he's a freshman. TOO i mean there's some pretty impressive.
Freshmen and we Saw Cola pete the other. Day, wow

(06:07):
and now these guys coming Into New.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
York, yeah it's a special it's a special. Class it's
a special.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
YEAR i think you've seen freshmen have success again that
that that that fifty YEAR covid group is. OUT i,
think you, know the you, know it's strictly being a, sport,
uh you, know which is back to four year players
without that EXTRA covid year has given younger players more
of a, chance, uh you, know to to to have an.

(06:36):
Impact BUT i think that uh, YEAH i mean. It
they're they're as as daunting a challenge in terms of
guarding them as as you're gonna find because of the,
size the, skill the, shooting the, versatility the. Scheme you,
know it's, UH i mean that they're they're as good

(06:56):
as Anyone i've, seen And i've seen almost.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
Everybody, YEAH i seven to Guy VISEVICH i think is his,
Name Croatian guy's seven. To he's got seventeen blocks. ALREADY i,
mean so they got some size and defense in the.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Interior, YEAH i mean he does the, drop you, know
he gets in that drop that we've.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
Seen you, know it's not what we did With.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
Donovan you, know we were you, know we were a
little you, know we're up a little higher with the
way that we Utilized donovan. Defensively but these guys are
in that in that drop coverage with, him and he's got.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
The you, know he's got the three point range and,
uh not.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
Just catching shoot, threes but shot fake sidestep and and
drive the ball.

Speaker 3 (07:37):
To the rim and.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
EURO i, mean he's a very unique. PLAYER i mean
that that they're, uh they're gonna be a very hard
team to deal with nansub a tournament when you've got
a short.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
Prep, yeah he's got seven threes already. Made all, right,
coach we appreciate. It have a nice, holiday try, to you,
know enjoy with your, family and we'll see You friday
