Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hen Reiko High School. I'm looking for a graduate of
hen Reiko High School. Her name is Susie Lindquist. Lindquist,
Susie Lindquist. Now, she graduated from hen Reiko High School
(00:20):
in two thousand and eight. Okay, apparently she was a
pretty good athlete, because I know that she has been
inducted into the hen Reiko High School.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Athletic Hall of Fame.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
It's big deal.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
She was inducted into the hen Reiko High School Athletic
Hall of Fame in twenty twenty four, so last year
she was inducted into the into the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
She played field hockey.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
It says she grew up playing ice hockey, which is awesome,
but that's not what she's known for now, Like that,
that's what maybe she was.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Known for back when she was at Henriiko High School.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
After college, and I don't know, I don't know where
she went to college, she moved and went to Sweden,
the country I assume that, well, Diane, Diane didn't give
me anything there, so I didn't know she knew what
I was talking about.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Like she looked like maybe she was confused.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
I know what Sweden is, No, I know you do shots.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
Oh wait, you got a zipper on those today?
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Sorry tough.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Remember, I know you were triggered earlier.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
I know, I know.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
But it was in Sweden when she started playing floor ball.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
What is that?
Speaker 1 (01:47):
So floorball I've never heard of. I've never heard of,
and apparently it's very big in Europe. Actually it started
in Sweden, says Floorball originallygated excuse me, in Sweden in
the early nineteen seventies and is widely played in the
Nordic countries. It made its way to the United States
(02:10):
around twenty years ago. The sport, so they say, is
very similar to hockey, with a few key differences. Obviously,
floorball means you're gonna use sneakers instead of skates, You're
gonna use a ball instead of a puck. But I
don't know.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
I don't know what other difference.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
I'm assuming the sticks are different, like I'm sure that
there are equipment differences and stuff like that, But in
terms of rule of play, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
I don't know what's different or is not.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
So if somebody knows floorball, like, is there floorball like,
there's a there's the Richmond Floorball Club, nick Ball Dano
is the president of that. But would there be would
there be a DC floorball club? Would there be a like?
(02:59):
How small does it? I don't think there's a Spotsylvania
floorball club.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
I honestly don't think I've ever heard of it.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
I never have, No, I never have. Listen, I know
people that play street hockey, but I've never heard of
floor ball.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
Now, I don't know if.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Anybody knows Susie Lindquist, but start texting her, please, I
need her. I'll even talk. I'll even take Nick Baldano,
he is the president of the Richmond floor Ball Club.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
I'll take anybody who knows anything about floor ball.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
Yeah, I'm looking on Like, if somebody.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
Is here and they are of Swedish descent, do they
know floorball?
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Probably if they are the inventors Sweden is yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
Yeah, Well, I guess it could be anybody from a.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Nordic country.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
Or companies.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
Once she started playing, Susie Lindquist says she never looked back.
She later joined France's national team and then was recruited
to play for the US women's national floorboard team.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
Okay, how many countries this she eligible to play for?
Speaker 1 (04:12):
She has since played in two World Floorball Championships with
Team USA and is now preparing for her third. It says,
with Team USA, we don't have that centrally funded organization
like other European countries do. Each player has about three
thousand dollars in cost to cover. The Richmond Floorball Club
(04:36):
was founded last year. The club keeps everything inexpensive, often
providing balls.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
And sticks to needy players.
Speaker 1 (04:43):
But anyway they're doing a the whole reason well, I
bring it up for a couple of reason.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Number one, I've never heard of it, never heard of floorball.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
It sounds awesome, like I love hockey obviously probably, but
if this were another way, and they did say like
some people think, oh well, this isn't gonna be hard.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
I think I was reading that.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
When Susie started playing, she was like, I was huffing
and puffing like madman after ten minutes.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
Oh yeah, I mean the gameplay looks intense.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
Oh yeah, no, and I bet it is.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
But it is. In Switzerland, Germany and Ireland it is
referred to as Una hockey.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
Oh really.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
And in Sweden and they'd like this to be the
name universally, they call it any bandy. In bandy, I
n any b a.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
N d y.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
Huh b a ny n d.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
Why what is it any band?
Speaker 4 (05:34):
Well?
Speaker 3 (05:35):
Is it in or any I don't know.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
I'm not Swedish.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
But it says that it was popularized also domestically by
just elementary school gyms in the fifties and sixties in
the US.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Now that I get. But I bet it was I
bet it was a little bit different.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
I bet they were just playing like just running around
in the you know, like in the gym, playing quote hockey,
like they weren't playing floorball.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
So when Sweden says they invented it, it is closer
to what the modern form is. What was being played
in the gym is because the fifties would take you
earlier than Sweden's claiming they came.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
Up with it.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Yeah, probably probably Where am I going line too?
Speaker 1 (06:24):
Hi? Elliot in the morning?
Speaker 5 (06:27):
Hey Elliott?
Speaker 1 (06:28):
Hey, who's this?
Speaker 5 (06:31):
My name's Matt.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
Hey, Matt, I'm doing great. What can I do for you?
Are you familiar with floorball? Uh?
Speaker 5 (06:38):
Yeah? Like good friends with Nick. We started the Richmond
Floorball Club.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
Oh that's Nick?
Speaker 2 (06:44):
Is it?
Speaker 1 (06:44):
Am I saying it right? Baldano Baldap Baldeno yeah, so
how did you How did you guys end up starting it?
Speaker 6 (06:53):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (06:53):
So we played uh through River City Sports and Social
Club right in Richmond, and uh we got tired of
doing that, so we start our own club. Oh but
I played there yesterday, played floorball yesterday.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Actually, is it hard?
Speaker 5 (07:13):
Uh not to start? No, it's pretty easy to start
and pick up?
Speaker 2 (07:18):
All right? You know what?
Speaker 3 (07:19):
He's eating pizza?
Speaker 1 (07:21):
It was hot when I got here.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
I wanted to are their sack breaks stirring floorball?
Speaker 2 (07:25):
I'm a sub.
Speaker 1 (07:28):
Hey how much I understand it's a ball and the
sticks are different? Does it play like hockey? Or is
it pretty different?
Speaker 5 (07:38):
I've never really played hockey, so I don't know.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
Oh, sorry about that? And then do you know do
you know Susie Lindquist?
Speaker 3 (07:45):
He must.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
No, I know Nick.
Speaker 5 (07:48):
I'm more familiar with Nick.
Speaker 1 (07:50):
I gotcha all right?
Speaker 5 (07:51):
Like a talenthood friend.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
Hey, why is there is is floorball bigger than I? Than?
Speaker 2 (07:57):
I believe that it is?
Speaker 1 (07:58):
Like like like you said, like you and Nick have
Richmond Floorball club? Are there are there would be able
to find? I don't want to say a lot because
that's open to interpretation. But are there several floorball clubs
up and down the East.
Speaker 5 (08:10):
Coast, I believe though.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
Yeah, dude, that's awesome, that's awesome.
Speaker 5 (08:17):
How many how lated Barton on Monday nights?
Speaker 1 (08:21):
How many how many people.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Are in the club?
Speaker 5 (08:25):
Uh? About one hundred.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
That's great, that's great.
Speaker 5 (08:29):
Good we had this season and you did.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
Say yes, Monday Monday nights at Barton. Barton Memorial Rink
is is where everything is. But the whole reason, ay,
thank you, my friend, I appreciate it. But the whole
reason I bring it up is so Susie and the
team USA Floorball Club they're going back for another world championship.
(08:52):
You know where the World Floorball Championship I can't say
floorball for some reason, championships are going to be played.
So they're doing a fundraiser at at Barton.
Speaker 6 (09:01):
Okay, let's call it any bandy Sorry, you're right. They
got to go to Checchia. Not that's where the championships
are this year.
Speaker 1 (09:13):
So Susie's team is doing a fundraiser and the fundraiser
is Monday, October thirteenth. So this coming Monday starts at
seven o'clock and they say the Indie Bandy Club welcomes
anyone interested in supporting the team or learning about the sport.
That's great. Nine four Hi Ellie in the morning. Hey, yeah, Hi,
(09:37):
who's this? This is Nick bull Dan.
Speaker 4 (09:40):
How how you doing?
Speaker 1 (09:41):
Oh dude, I just talked to your buddy. How are you?
I know I listened to you talk to him. Yeah, No,
it was great. Now I'm doing good.
Speaker 7 (09:47):
How are you?
Speaker 2 (09:48):
I'm doing excellent.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
Hey, I'm glad that they I'm glad they did this
story on Susie and and the club. I had never
heard a floor ball.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (09:57):
No, she's actually just talked to her Bob talking to
her the last last couple of days on we're trying
to get this stuff started here in Richmond and trying
to get her some funds for the women's team. But yeah,
she actually just texted me, oh.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
Sweet hey, is that is And is it like you're
like your buddy was saying, you guys were doing it
through someone else and decided to start your own program.
Speaker 4 (10:16):
No, we were playing just directly here in Richmond River
City Sports and Social Club, and we just thought there
was a little more demand and figure we start a
club And now we're kind of working together to dro
throw the sport.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
And he said, there. You guys had four teams last year?
Is it is it? Is it easy to get into?
He said it was very easy to start and pick up.
Speaker 5 (10:37):
Yeah, oh that's extremely easy.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (10:38):
All you need really is uh just a stick and
sneakers walk on the court and it's pretty easy to
learn to hit a ball, not like skating on ice
or on roller skates or anything like that. So your
balance is there is just hitting the ball with a
stick's pretty easy.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
Oh well, then you know what I feel like I
could be Why don't I feel to Eliot in the
morning team? Why don't I do that?
Speaker 3 (10:57):
About the format?
Speaker 5 (10:57):
I think you should bring a team out on Monday.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
Yeah, absolutely, the well you know what, Captain Diana will
be there. Hey, what is the what is the what
is the play though? Like, is it similar to hockey
or no? That's a good point.
Speaker 4 (11:10):
So it's similar to hockey from the outside looking it
if you've never played it. Once you start playing the sport,
the angles, the technique, the finets, it's a lot different,
a lot different.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
Do you have boards like just to keep the ball
from going off the What do I play on a court?
Speaker 2 (11:23):
I don't know what I play on?
Speaker 4 (11:24):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, Actually I think they're eighteen inch eight
and inch high boards. And there's actually the floor is
actually called a girfloor g e r F l o R.
It's a brand.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
It's a type of.
Speaker 4 (11:35):
Synthetic floor that we don't really have a lot of
here in the States. We have a lot of gyms,
a lot of gym floor, a lot of hardwood floors.
So that's that we play on mostly mostly.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
Right, But it's a GIRF floor.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
And Ben, did you know anything about it before you
started playing at the UH at River City Sports?
Speaker 4 (11:52):
I knew nothing about it. No, I hadn't heard about
it at all until about twenty twenty two. Probably.
Speaker 1 (11:57):
Wow, dude, that's amazing. I give you credit. Man, you ball.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
They're like, hey, let's go start this whole program if.
Speaker 4 (12:04):
You have a lot of people who play it in Richard,
so it's pretty easy to do and people start keep
coming out and playing.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
So it is there is there a club in d C.
There is? Yes. I like that.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
I like that. I mean I'm very intrigued. Say again,
d in a Bandy is the name of the club
in a bandy And that's what I call it.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
I'm I'm a traditionalist.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
You know that.
Speaker 5 (12:28):
Nick?
Speaker 1 (12:28):
Hey, Nick, it's so and you said there or I
said I was reading the fundraiser? Is this coming Monday right?
Speaker 7 (12:36):
That's right?
Speaker 1 (12:37):
Yep, it's going Monday, Monday night.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
Excellent, excellent.
Speaker 1 (12:40):
Hey, I appreciate the phone call. Thank you, Nick, No problem,
thank you, you got it.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
Thank you, my friend.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
Yes to d C and a.
Speaker 3 (12:46):
Bandy is based out of just down the road in Bethesa.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
Are you serious?
Speaker 1 (12:50):
Where do they play?
Speaker 3 (12:51):
They have a game Tuesday night at Herbert Hoover Middle School.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
So, but it's so, d C in a bandy is
based out of based out of Bethesda.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
And how about Herbert Hoover clearly having a girl floor
or maybe not? Maybe not? So you can easily get involved.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
In a bandy in a bandy?
Speaker 3 (13:18):
Okay? Does it sound interesting to you? Does it does
sound like something you would do? Or would it take
away from your hockey? Man? Hockey?
Speaker 1 (13:28):
The why can't I do both? Why can't I be
a two sport athlete? Why can't I be Why can't
I be Bo Jackson?
Speaker 2 (13:34):
Ope? I have to go to line one.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
Please say hello to twenty twenty four inductee into the
Henriiko High School Athletic Hall of Fame, Susie.
Speaker 7 (13:47):
Okay, guys, how are you for having me on?
Speaker 1 (13:51):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (13:51):
I'm fine, thanks, really really happy to hear Floral being
sooken about the radio?
Speaker 1 (13:56):
Yes, where where where do I find you?
Speaker 2 (13:59):
Right now?
Speaker 1 (13:59):
Where are you right now?
Speaker 7 (14:01):
I'm actually in Paris?
Speaker 1 (14:04):
What shut up?
Speaker 4 (14:04):
Are you serious?
Speaker 1 (14:05):
You're in Paris?
Speaker 7 (14:07):
Yeah, yeah, I am. I've lived over here for a
couple of years now. I moved over after living in
Richmond for a long time. I was moved to Sweden,
and then I moved to France for a while. Well,
I still live here and I play in their national
league over here and with USA floorball.
Speaker 1 (14:23):
Hey, so, how many how many like?
Speaker 2 (14:25):
Like?
Speaker 1 (14:25):
For example, I'm I'm I'm a dual citizen. I'm Canadian
and I'm American. How many how many citizenships do you have?
You you played for everybody's like world team.
Speaker 7 (14:37):
I only have two. But once you played for a
kind of senior league team for a country, you can
actually only ever play with that team. So since I've
played for the US, it's not like I could play
with anybody else, and I wouldn't want to.
Speaker 1 (14:49):
There you go, that's right, You're goddamn right.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
Susie.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
Your goddamn right, Hey, so did I I was reading
about you? Did I recorrectly? So you grew up you
grew up playing hockey and field hockey.
Speaker 7 (15:00):
Yes, exactly.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
And why did you after? Where'd you go to college?
By the way, I went.
Speaker 7 (15:06):
To junior out of college. It's a small A three
school in central Pennsylvania.
Speaker 3 (15:09):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
And were you Were you doing any athletics there?
Speaker 4 (15:13):
Yep?
Speaker 7 (15:13):
I actually went there to playfield hockey.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
Oh, good for you. How did you end up? How
did you end up in Sweden?
Speaker 7 (15:21):
So my dad is Swedish. You might be able to
tell from the last name went twist And I went
over there to do some more studies, and I wanted
to keep playing ice hockey, but there's there just wasn't
a lot of opportunity because there's so many players, so
I didn't really have the opportunity to play on the team.
And somebody there asked me if I wanted to try floorball,
And I ended up playing with a bunch of professors
at my university, and in more ways than one, they
(15:44):
were truly schooling me, but I learned to love it.
They taught me everything that they knew because it's it
is like hockey, but it's different enough that it takes
it takes a little bit of getting used to, especially
if you're used to a puck. Yeah, and there's the
reason that I continue to play today.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
Dude.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
That is awesome.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
So here's here's what I don't get though. So the
World Championships, You'll be representing Team USA in the World
Championships and those are those are in Checchia.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
Listen, it's a team.
Speaker 1 (16:14):
Sport, right where Like where is everybody at? Like is
everybody else in Richmond and you're like over in France.
Speaker 7 (16:23):
Another great question, Like, like a lot of a lot
of the teams, we have players spread throughout the world.
So I'm in France. We have some players that are
in Sweden, I'm in Switzerland, a couple of it in Norway.
And then we have quite a few players that are
actually still based in the US, Like we have some
players that are in Colorado, in California and Texas. Not
(16:43):
as many players on the East Coast. That's something that
I know that Richmond, Florball is trying to change a
lot by the growth of sport there, right, But because
of that, we don't really have massive opportunities to play together.
So we met this March in Austin to play against Canada.
That was the qualifier, and we only saw each other
for two days before that as a full team to
(17:04):
get to practice to get our lines down, and then
we went into our qualifiers. And that's going to be
kind of the same thing when we meet in December.
We'll meet a couple of days before for two days
of pretty intense practice, a practice game with one of
the local teams, and then we'll head into our first game.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
Dude, that's awesome. I love it.
Speaker 1 (17:23):
I love it.
Speaker 7 (17:25):
It's really good fun. We were a really really cool team.
It's really diverse people from all age ranges too. I
think that's the really cool thing about floorball is that,
especially if you have some sort of history in another sport,
you can get started with justin sneakers and borrowing a
stick from a club and progress really fast. I started
playing when I was twenty four. Obviously I have a
background at hockey and ice hockey, right, but then I
(17:47):
kind of put my stick down for about four years,
and really it only picked it up again when I
was close to twenty nine, and I only started playing
on the national team at thirty one, and we still
have players that are in their forties. Had our goalie
in Singapore that was over fifty.
Speaker 1 (18:03):
You can.
Speaker 7 (18:03):
You can keep playing this game at any age and
as long as you have the technical skills and also
the drive and motivation, you can do big things with it.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
Susie, are you the and and listen? Nobody else on
the team is listening. Are you?
Speaker 1 (18:16):
Are you the best one on the team?
Speaker 7 (18:20):
Definitely not, damn it. We had some We have some
absolutely incredible players in our team. So in Sweden you
have something called this Sweeter super League, the it's it's
the SSL, and we have some players that used to
play in that. That's a professional floorball league in Sweden.
And yeah, we just I mean, we have players that
(18:41):
have been that have been playing floorball since they were
able to walk. Then there's a few of us that
only pick it up later in life. You know, we
do our best and we keep up, but there's a
I mean, there's some real talent on this team.
Speaker 2 (18:53):
Hey, so I understand how you ended up in Sweden?
Speaker 1 (18:57):
How did Howard?
Speaker 2 (18:58):
Why are you in Paris?
Speaker 1 (19:00):
H oh?
Speaker 2 (19:01):
For love?
Speaker 7 (19:01):
Of course? Isn't that the only reason you.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
Chase the you you you chase the love, didn't you?
Speaker 7 (19:07):
I did?
Speaker 4 (19:07):
I did.
Speaker 7 (19:08):
I'm got a European he brought me here.
Speaker 2 (19:11):
And you guys are still good?
Speaker 7 (19:13):
Yes, all right?
Speaker 2 (19:14):
Good?
Speaker 1 (19:14):
Well no, I don't know, no, but I mean like
sometimes sometimes you chase it and uh, it doesn't go
the way that you thought it was.
Speaker 3 (19:21):
Also Richmond and River Cities.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
That is true. That is.
Speaker 1 (19:29):
All right, so you what you call it? So but
but I guess the big encouragement. I'm assuming you're not
going to be in town on Monday, but the big encouragement,
that's okay. Yeah, well I guess unless he comes to Richmond,
you'll chase him the But no, that's good to be
able to, like to help raise money to support Team
USA for the World Championships in uh In Chech.
Speaker 2 (19:51):
I think that's awesome.
Speaker 7 (19:53):
Yeah, it's absolutely incredible what Richmond Florball is doing for us.
It's it's really helping kind of move the needle for
a lot of our players. Like I said, we have
players coming from everywhere. We also have players that are
still students. So really every penny that gets to our
team that helps us to do more and focus on
our training rather than focusing on how we're going to
pay for the tournament. Every single penny helps, so we're
(20:14):
so grateful for the Richmond community for what they're doing,
and hopefully it also inspires some people to come out
and try the sport for the first time while also
supporting our journey.
Speaker 2 (20:24):
Hey, last two things.
