Speaker 1 (00:00):
Were you happy with this year's camp.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Yeah, it was a good camp. We couple weeks. It
was a bit of a grind.
Speaker 3 (00:07):
We played six preseason games, did fairly well in the games,
and had a bunch of guys fighting for spots on
the roster, which.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
With some difficult decisions.
Speaker 3 (00:19):
There was a bunch of guys that were really close
and so it made our jobs as coaches and management
difficult to make those calls on the roster.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
Hey, are you going to be one of those coaches
like next year?
Speaker 4 (00:30):
Next year preseasonal change, You're gonna lose two games and
then obviously we had two games to the regular season.
And I get it, fans don't love preseason hockey. Veterans
don't love preseason hockey. But I feel like when you
talk about the kids that are trying to make whether
it's the bottom six or you know, a third defensive
pair of just trying to hold on, that may be
(00:52):
the most important part of the season for them.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
For sure, it is, And that's the trade off is
you know that them getting a look to be able
to play a couple extra preseason games to showcase their
skill set and what they potentially can do.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
In the regular season.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
But it's changed so much because the veterans back in
the day training camp.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
I think this is in like.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Almost all of pro sports used to be, guys would
come back, they'd be out of shape, and training camp
was utilized as a way to get guys back up
to speed and back into shape for lack of a
better term, for a couple of weeks, and they would
do bag skates and they would.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Do lifts and training.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
Well, now what's happened is all of these guys are
in such good shape when they come into camp, like.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
They don't need you to put them.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
Through the paces and get them into shape because they're
already in peak form coming into camp with how serious
they trained. Sure, so now that they don't need a
few weeks to get quote unquote back into shape.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
I gotcha.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
Hey, a couple of guys you said they made it,
they made it hard on you. There were a couple
of guys that I thought really had unbelievable camps. Sonny Milano,
I thought, yeah, fantastic coming back from injury.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
He had a great camp.
Speaker 4 (02:09):
And then yet like you look at you look at
somebody like Hendricks Lapierre, He I mean you talk about
they always talk about playing desperate and how that could
be good. That's a kid, Yeah, that's a kid who
looked like you're it's it's gonna it's gonna take a
truck to move me out of here.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Your spot on with both guys is Study, who basically
missed all of last season due to injury.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
So coming back, you weren't sure what to expect.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Is it gonna take him a little bit to get
back up and running, hasn't played in games and so long,
and and he got off to a terrific starting camp,
earned a spot.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
On the team.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Was you know, look like peaks Sonny Milano right out
of out of the gate and training camp and and
earned his spot. And Lappie exactly what you touched on,
just so determined. He had a rough year last year
from you know, he made the team last year and
things didn't go.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Well at the beginning of the season, ended up.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
Having to go back to the miners and finished the
year there, but came back this year just on a mission,
exactly what you said, and did a great job through
training camp and all store in the spot.
Speaker 4 (03:14):
Hey and listen, Spencer, I know all NHL teams played
by the same waiver wire rules? Do you hate preseason
waiver wire where like just specifically, you take goalie Klay Stevenson, right,
the guys projected he's going to be the number one
goalie in Hershey, you have to bring him to camp.
He has to come to camp. But then if you
(03:35):
want to send him down, you're you're handcuffed, like there's
nothing you can do, and we still don't know if
we'll have him until later today.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
Yeah, that's the tricky part because in the Collective Bargaining Agreement,
you know, players in their fourth year our way are
become waver eligible.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
So that the reason the rules in place to see,
you can't.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Have a guy that you just keep sending to the
miners and you know he can't do anything about it.
This protects him, so you know, if you're going to
send him through the minor to the miners at a
certain point in their career, third year, fourth year, And
there's actually an age component to it as well, just
like Clay because he's a little bit older. Is now
(04:16):
they say they become Way eligible and if you're going
to try to send him to the miners, then the
other thirty one teams have an opportunity to pick them
up and keep him. You would have to stay on
the NHL roster, and so it is a little bit unfortunate,
especially in Clay's situation, because goalies develop a little bit
later than regular position players, and so you would like
(04:37):
to have them for an extra couple of years. But
you know this part of the CBA, and so Clay
will you know thirty one teams will have an opportunity.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
To claim Clay and keep him in the NHL today.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
Do you think do you think we keep him or
do you think he's gone?
Speaker 2 (04:50):
It's a hard call.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
I know, there's been buzzed and media surrounding. It's really
difficult to predict because again, you have to keep that
player in the NA for thirty days.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
You cannot send him to the minors.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
So a team has to be willing to keep Clay
and he's got to play right away. So yeah, if
I had to bet, I don't know I would.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
It would be a guest.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
But you know, for him, I hope he gets an opportunity,
but also selfishly hope he stays in the organization with us.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
Sure, Hey, two kids that did get sent down and
we don't have to spend a lot of time on him.
But two kids who make you look at the future.
Number one Andrew Crystal. I don't know where. I don't
know where he learned to shoot a pocket but you
don't teach that. That kid has got an amazing shot
on him.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Yeah, he does. And he's going to be a tremendous player.
And it just takes time, you know. And this is his.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
First pro season, and a little bit of time in
the minor leagues is really going to help him.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
But he's a big part of our future.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
Has had a tremendous junior career and so starting in
Hershey and and sort of getting a feel for the
professional game, playing against grown men, I think will help
him a lot down the road.
Speaker 4 (06:01):
And then as long as we're talking goalies, that kid
who was up but he got some time in uh Bjorklund.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
Wow, there's something special in that kid, big time.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
And and we were sort of it's taken him a
little bit longer. He had a bad injury, missed the
full season, so we weren't really sure. Last year though
he had a tremendous year, comes to camp, looked fantastic,
gets into the Boston game, our first preseason game and
was excellent. So his he had a real good camp
(06:32):
and opened some eyes and so his trajectory and he's
on a uh, on a good path.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
Hey.
Speaker 4 (06:37):
So the goalies we do have obviously Lynn Grin and
uh and uh Logan. Okay, last year, last year you
split and that was the deal and until we got
right right up against the playoffs and then and then
Logan emerged as the starter and.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
That that was fine. That was fine.
Speaker 4 (06:55):
Yeah, what was the mindset this year where it's gonna
be we're gonna have a number one and we're going
to have a number two.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
It's hard to Like, I know, we we always want
to put like definitives on players and where they are.
To me, Logan has earned the opportunity to get first
crack at being our one A. Like this is what
I call I call one A, one B and LT.
It's going to get first opportunity to carry the load essentially.
(07:28):
And what that looks like from a game split fifty
fifty sixty, forty seventy thirty, I don't know. But he's
going to get first crack at being our guy. And
he's earned that opportunity with the season that he had
last year. Now, Chucky is and has done an incredible
job over the last two years that I've been here,
(07:48):
and so I don't like to put something because if
you remember two years ago, we came into the season
and Darcy Kemper was the quote unquote one and Charlie.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
Ingram was the two.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
And if we remember how that season played, Chucky we
ended up playing whatever it was, forty games and he
played all the games down the stretch to help us
get into the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
So look, LT had.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
An amazing year last year and he's, like I said,
it's going to get first crack at this. But we
have a ton of confidence in Chucky and he'll have
an opportunity to earn a bunch of starts as well.
Speaker 4 (08:19):
Saturday night you got to see Nick Dawd, Brandon dew
Ham and potentially I'm assuming who will be their wing
partner when they open up on Wednesday, sort of playing
with them. I like that kid, he's he's gritty. Yeah,
I like him a lot.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
I totally agree.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
He's got a great camp and you can see why
we gave up the picks that we did to acquire.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
Him in this offseason.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
He plays with a ton of energy, good pace to
his game as feet are always moving, he's attacking, and
he's got a physical edge to him. So all the qualities,
the individual tangible quality that would fit really well with
the Brandon new Hayman Nick Dawts. So we're excited about
that line. And Justin also sort of can play center
(09:07):
as well, so you may see sometimes where I move
them around a little bit and give them give them
some opportunity to play the center ice position as well.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
You got a couple of those guys.
Speaker 4 (09:16):
Hey, by the way, are your and if you if
you need help, Spencer, I'm glad to do it.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
Are you mentally or your line set for Wednesday night?
Speaker 3 (09:26):
You know what, It's funny you say that we're gonna
have a discussion this morning as a staff and and
sort of set that for the next two days because
I would like to get some practice reps for them
for for the next two practice days to make sure
that we're ready for Wednesdays.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
So we'll discuss that this.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
Morning, talk about any tweaks that we need to make
based on Saturday night's preseason game and some of our
decisions we made roster wise, and then we'll see how
they look today.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
Okay, so you didn't give me a time, I'm assuming
you don't need me for that. That's okay, that's all right. Hey,
any uh any injury update on Matt Roy.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
I think you should be good.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
I saw him yesterday and he had treat me yesterday,
and so I don't think it's a long term thing.
I think he he should be good to go for Wednesday.
Speaker 1 (10:12):
Excellent. Excellent.
Speaker 4 (10:13):
Hey, let me ask you this from a coaching standpoint, Spencer,
looking around the league, were there any like like that's
your fraternity of of of of peers. Was there were
there any coaching moves where you're like, oh, I wonder
how that.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
Changes this team?
Speaker 4 (10:28):
Or like you look at a Joel Quinnville going uh
like getting a job at Yeah and going out to Anaheim.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
Or you look at news up in uh in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 4 (10:37):
Was there anything that you saw or Sullivan change in
where you're like, oh, that'll be interesting to see what
they change.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
I think that too, just because they're they're divisional opponents
that we see a lot of and sort of track
is is one name that you just mentioned, The New
York Rangers with Sally going there which you know, we've
coached against him the last couple of years at Pittsburgh,
but an incredible coach is the head coach at Team
(11:04):
USA at the Olympics and at.
Speaker 2 (11:06):
The Four Nations.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
So that sort of keeping tabs on that, and as well,
Rick Pockett in Philly, you sure have a lot of
respect for and coming from Vancouver, did an excellent job
out there. So him coming to Philly with the with
the young team is also something that I've been following
this offseason.
Speaker 1 (11:24):
Man, I can't tell.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
I can't tell if if I like what the Flyers
are doing this year or if I hate what the Flyers.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
Are doing this year.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
Why do you say that?
Speaker 1 (11:33):
I just I can't. I can't.
Speaker 4 (11:35):
I mean, their goaltending is still a mess, but the
like I like the Zegres move, but I hate this
when I say I like it.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
Like I like, I like Zegres. I obviously don't want
the Flyers to have a good year. I can't. I
just I can't figure that team out.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
Well we'll see, you'll find out soon enough.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
Yeah, no kidding.
Speaker 4 (11:56):
Goals for the team the going into last year, I
don't know if everybody had us penciled in to be
to reach the level we did inside the room.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
I'm sure that was the goal. Does that set up
this year?
Speaker 4 (12:08):
And listen from a from a media standpoint, nationally, nobody
was expecting that out of the Caps there was the
retool and how is it going to go? Does that
set does that set the bar for this year of Okay,
now we got to go deeper?
Speaker 1 (12:22):
We have to make that run.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
Yeah, I think we have those internal expectations. I know,
you know, we don't worry too much about the outside
world and what they think and all the Caps can't
do this and that I mean, we're human beings. I mean,
these guys read and hear some of the stuff that said.
But we have high, high expectations for our team and individually,
(12:48):
and so we don't talk an about you know, Stanley
Cupp playoffs, winning the car. We're a very short term
focused team and so we honestly are trying to get
off to a good start, raise the bar and expectations
on it on a game by game basis of how
we play, and that that's really it. I know, we
(13:11):
have a lot of guys that are highly, highly motivated
professional hockey players, so that's always always helps when you're
talking about team goals.
Speaker 4 (13:20):
And I agree, getting off to a hot start is
is so important, especially with the parody in this way,
getting off to getting off.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
To a jump. Oh my got it changes everything.
Speaker 4 (13:29):
And then you said, individually, does Spencer Carberry have any
individual goals this year?
Speaker 3 (13:35):
I do, I honestly do. I. I set some stuff
for myself and it's and it's nothing really tangible like
that you can measure other than myself. I really have
tried to work on my bench management and and.
Speaker 2 (13:51):
That's an area that I'm paying attention to making sure that.
Speaker 3 (13:54):
Matchup wise, line combination wise, unique situations in game, like
my bench communication. In bench management, that's something that I've
tried to focus on this off season of getting a
little bit better in that area so that I can
do a better job and be more productive for our guys.
Speaker 4 (14:12):
What about being the first in Jacques le Maire first,
what coach to win back to back Jack Adams Awards?
Speaker 3 (14:20):
Oh my gosh, that is the first thing my mind.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
Oh my gosh.
Speaker 1 (14:30):
All right, listen, I raise a bar high.
Speaker 4 (14:32):
I'm sorry, Spencer, I raise a bar high.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
Man, I am if that is even in the realm,
I know we had a good.
Speaker 1 (14:41):
Year in our holy win it unanimously.
Speaker 4 (14:44):
If you run away with that, We're raising banners, we're
doing everything.
Speaker 1 (14:48):
It's all on you. It's all on you.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
That means our team had a great year.
Speaker 1 (14:55):
Absolutely a spencer. Best of luck. The season will get
underway Wednesday night.
Speaker 4 (14:59):
I feel like it's been too long since we've had
a meaningful hockey game, even though it was a shorter summer,
but still I'm so itchy for it. Best of luck,
and I look forward to seeing everything on Wednesday night.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
Awes hell yeah, I can't wait for it and appreciate
you having me on
