Speaker 1 (00:00):
Obviously, overnight the big news was John Carlson traded to
the Anaheim Ducks. Let's go out some men, Star Capitals
ice Plex, Joe Beninati.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Yes, how are you?

Speaker 3 (00:16):
How are you, sir?

Speaker 2 (00:18):
I'm doing okay today, Elliott, how about yourself?

Speaker 3 (00:21):
You know what, Joe, I am going to tell you.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
And when we started the show this morning, we were
talking about it and caught a lot of people off
off guard, even though I had mentioned that Carlson's name
could be one of those that are going.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
And I don't know what the mood is like at
the at the rink.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
I assume players losing Dowed yesterday and then losing Carlson overnight,
Guys who have been here for a long time, friends
with everybody on the team, and you know, Joe, you've
been around hockey forever.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
It's it's it's it's a weird day.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
You're losing teammates and friends, guys that you've battled with.
I really think, and this is because of my hockey mind, Joe.
I really think it's a smart move by the Caps
last night trading him.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
I know that was in the text that you shared
with me this morning, and I can echo the comments
that you're talking about with regard to the you know,
the feeling, it's somber here. It's a sad day. Definitely
was yesterday and doubly so overnight last night, because you're
talking about two guys who've been you know, died in
a wolf fabric with the Capitals, really beloved teammates, good

(01:23):
friends and family members, and you've been around this rink
when you've seen family day here. The Caps have an
enormous extended family and it's just a sad and somber
time when when a trade like this is made. But
I understand from the hockey standpoint, you're feeling like the
move is a good one in terms of of a rebuild,

(01:46):
retool for the future. I think what Chris Patrick is
trying to do, what Caps ownership and management is trying
to do now, and they have been doing it for
a number of seasons, a couple of them at least,
is you know, dance on that line between retool and rebuild,
stay relevant, not necessarily fall through the floor. I don't

(02:07):
expect there to be an enormous fire sale today, but
I say that as soon as I say it, I
try to catch myself and say you don't know, because
uh I was certainly was surprised by last night's loot news.
It's odd to walk into the building. I walk into
the media room today in the first picture you see
on the wall is John Carlson addressing the local media

(02:28):
right here in DC. So it's a shock to your system.

Speaker 1 (02:31):
But you know what, Joe the the and so yes yesterday,
yesterday was step one. And so if you're if you're,
if you're Chris Patrick, if you're if you're Brian McClellan,
if you're if your ownership or whatever it is, and
you look at what you have and you go, okay,
we are Yesterday we acquired a ton of picks, a
ton of picks for Dowd and for Carlson. I have

(02:54):
to assume today is if yesterday was sell day. I
have to assume today is by day or else all
you've you punt the season. If that's not the case,
and now you've stockpiled a ton of picks, which is fine,
But if that were the case, hold on to down
like you didn't need.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
Those two picks.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
So Elliott, I'm glad you mentioned it that way because
most people are sitting here going okay, they have punted
the season. They are going to sell the rest of
the day.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
I do.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
I agree with you. I think they're going to add
I actually do, and I just I mean, you could
use this recent experience just two years ago when the
team was in a fight to get to the playoffs
and they're still in a fight to get to the
playoffs now, and we could talk more about that, for sure.
But you dealt Mantha, you dealt Kuznetsov, you dealt the

(03:47):
defenseman whose names is Ol Edmondson. You dealt those three
guys two years ago, and you still made the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
Right.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
I do expect them to bring some pieces back today.
There's still may be more on the way out. Sure,
I do expect them to bring some pieces back. And
I don't think this is just a what's that expression,
a white flag on this season. I think that would
be that would be smart. This is a business. If
you get into the playoffs, you never know what happens
if you get into the playoffs. Obviously that's a financial

(04:14):
boon for the for the organization.

Speaker 1 (04:16):
And it's not a case of now I was talking
about this earlier, Joe, It's not a case of listen,
the Caps need. The Caps need scoring, Like they've been
very honest about that. They need a top six forward.
They need a forward. So I do I believe if
Carlson had been the only piece that moved and you
got picks for him, I would have said, I don't
know what I expect today because you're not going to

(04:39):
sign him to a long term, big money deal.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
I get that.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
So instead of losing for nothing, you trade them away.
Does it suck emotionally, yes, does it make sense to do?
Of course it does. But when you also send out
Dowd and go okay, if not, you would have kept him.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
You would have kept him this year, you would have
kept him.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
Next year, which is the only reason that I think
they go shopping. And I do think, yeah, you may
lose some pieces today. You may lose I bet there's
a lot of whether. I mean, listen, we could throw
a million names out there. I bet there's a ton
of nervous guys. But you have pieces and you have picks.
I don't know who they're gonna go running after. But
I don't think they've punted on the season. Oh and

(05:18):
unlike the Western Conference, which is so goddamn hot, top heavy,
the Eastern Conference isn't as top heavy.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
You don't have to go out and.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
Get five, six guys or four guys to make a run.
The D is fine, the D is good, goaltending is good.
You need a little more scoring. Now you're gonna need
somebody who can lock down a little bit more. But
it doesn't take a huge overhaul to make a run
in the Eastern Conference.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
You got to get hot at the right time.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
You don't need me.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
You just I know, Joe, I've been saying it forever.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
Just get rid of Ben Andati already. No, No, But
I really, I really do believe that.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
I really do, And I think it's placed. I think
it's it is in mind for them to do that,
And I just I keep coming back to the recent
experiences of the last few years, around the deadline and
around all of the well it's soon to be the
end of the skin era. How are we going to

(06:19):
move forward? They've done a marvelous job they being management
and training and scouting and player development from that standpoint
of keeping the Caps relevant. They've been on that line
of well, we're gonna tear it down, are we gonna
rebuild it? Are we gonna retool it, what are we
gonna call it? And they've been on that line for

(06:42):
a number of years and they've managed to be the
write the picture. Last year they got to be the
best team in the East. This year, they're not the
best team in the East. But they are still, in
my mind, in position to make a raw of takes
in the East this season, I would imagine, is a
wrong four to five games, then you're right back in

(07:02):
the picture. Now you're gonna say, Joe, I don't see
I don't see that from this team. And we can
argue that back and forth. Yes, the Caps have played
more games than anybody in the league, and that leaves
a lot of teams with games in hand. Oh well,
teams in hand. Last night Pittsburgh had one. They got
drilled by Buffalo. Right, I'm not scared by Pittsburgh. I'm
not scared by the New York Islanders in the second

(07:24):
third position in the Metro. For me, Elliott, for the
for the best way for them to make the playoffs
is to be in the top three in the Metro,
and I think still think that's well within their reach.

Speaker 3 (07:34):
Hey, Joe, let me ask you this.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
Let's let's let's just pretend for a second that that
we're wrong, and today continues the sell off and they
just get pieces. The number eight is still wearing a jersey.
Nobody knows what he's doing next year. What a horrible
what a horrible message it would be to send to
him that we're not doing anything.

Speaker 2 (07:59):
Completely agree, and that's why I've said, for the most part,
I've been saying this answer asked, answering people's question with
a question for the last months, has already what has
Alex told management? Alex knows what has he told the team,
And if he's told the team that he's not coming back,
then you would think they would do everything they can

(08:21):
to get him one more postseason bid, right. I don't know. Again,
I don't pretend to know what that discussion has been like.
But you could do the either or thing and bounce
back and forth all you want. But if it is
of the mind that this is it, then you want
him to go out with a chance to play in
the Stanley Cup playoffs. And that means you don't literally
dissolve the team today at the deadline.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
Right, No, that's true, that's true.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
Hey, So so you mentioned you still liked him getting
into a three spot in the metro, for the for the,
for the, for the playoffs, just getting in. Listen, I'm
happy just to get in. When you're sitting outside and
you you need to get a ticket to the party,
I'm happy just to get in.

Speaker 3 (09:03):
But then I look at like the team that.

Speaker 1 (09:05):
Has the second wildcard spot is.

Speaker 3 (09:09):
Boston. There's no time to be MOPy at that rink.

Speaker 1 (09:13):
You've got big business to take care of tomorrow afternoon.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
An enormous game, and you've got them tomorrow in Boston.
And I realized the Bruins have been going great guns there.
They had won eleven straight. I think in their bond
that's going to be a difficult assignment, but you can
get them there. The Caps have won there and have
matched up well with Boston in recent seasons. You get
Boston again a week from tomorrow in your place. If

(09:37):
you win those games head to head, then we're having
a different discussion again. And again I don't mean any
disrespect to Pittsburgh. I think they've done wonderful coaching job
there to stay in the mix. I did not think
that they would be in the mix. Patrick Wat's team
on Long Island has done really, really well, I didn't
think they'd be this far into the mix in the chase. Still,

(09:59):
and yet that young Cookie Schaeffer. If the Islanders getting
the playoffs, Shafer is going to get MVP Voats as
a teenager. That's that's amazing to me. But I'm not
blown away by those teams. I'm not blown away by
the Columbus Blue Jackets. Rick Bonus has come in there
and breathe life into that that team, and they're very,
very good. They're up and coming. I like their their
style and their roster and their the ability that they have,

(10:22):
especially on defense with Warensky. But they don't pose this
this challenge that you can't get over the hump if
you're the Washington Cavils, which I think as presently constructed. Still,
the Caps can hang with all of those teams, by.

Speaker 1 (10:38):
The way, you know what, I'm mad at Columbus for
the one I shouldn't say the one guy. One of
the guys that I was really hoping the Caps would
go out if they're going to add scoring and go
get was Connor Garland, and he ended up getting The
Blue Jackets made a deal and got him last night.

Speaker 2 (10:53):
So I always wonder Elliott And you never know this
until you you sit down across from Chris pad and
whoever else is in the negotiation window for the Caps,
and it's got to be Chris and Brian McClellan and such,
and you asked them, well, what was the asking price
for Garland from Vancouver to Washington? Because most people will

(11:15):
sit there and go, whoa, it's two picks. The Caps
could have offered two picks. Just the shame was the offer,
you know, Garland for two picks to Washington. I bet not.
I'm betting that it's something that turned Chris off and
made him put the foot. But I, like you, think
that Garland would have been a nice ad. He's a
low twenty goal scorer. He's in his high twenties. I

(11:35):
want to say he's twenty twenty nine years old. He's shifty,
he's slicked. I think he would be a nice fit
for this team. I agree with you. And the fact
that he landed in Columbus is the double whammy because
you're fighting with the Bluejackets.

Speaker 1 (11:47):
Hey, who in the East scares you? You talked about
the Islanders, don't, Pittsburgh doesn't. Who?

Speaker 3 (11:51):
Who's the team that you got to run through in
the East.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
Oh buffalow, Oh Buffalo. Listen to me, Buffalo is hanging
with Tampa. I mean, Buffalo is right there with Tampa
in the Atlantic. I'm not gonna I'm not breaking my
arm to pat myself on the back here. I picked
Tampa at the beginning of the season as a Stanley
Cup champ. They were awful in the first quarter of

(12:19):
the season. They've been gangbusters since. And then to see
the moves that Buffalo has made, yes and the way
they've played finally all clicked them. I'll tell you, Elliott,
you you watch a lot of hockey. We sit in
a lot of rinks, locker and I and Alan, Alan
and our whole group at Monumental Sports Network. We'll watch practices.
When you watch the Buffalo sabers, you're like, Wow, where's

(12:40):
the disconnect? Why don't these guys win all of a sudden?
It's clicking now. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:44):
No, it'd be a great story for them to make
the playoffs would be a great story. I thought you
were gonna say Carolina and Tampa.

Speaker 2 (12:51):
I love Carolina. I think Carolina is perfectly well constructed
to win. If the Washington Capitals were to get into
the Stanley Cup play. I do think they can win
the first round. I would think that they would be
a significant underdog to Carolina again in the second round.
Carolina is due, long overdue. They're very very well constructed.

(13:12):
They and Tampa are the two best teams in the
East in my mind, I just I just am so
greatly impressed that Buffalo as all of a sudden one
point behind or level with Tampa's. That's stupid in my mind.
But they've turned it on there like like we had
imagined they might.

Speaker 1 (13:28):
And then last thing, Joe, and then I'll let you
run at three o'clock this afternoon. Is Charlie Lynn Grin
still the number two goalie on the team.

Speaker 2 (13:38):
Hmmm? I have not personally heard his name in play
with any specific trade designation. I'm going to answer your
question as yes, I am. I do think the Caps
will make more moves today, both additions and subtractions. I
think you'll see a couple more both ways in terms

(13:59):
of the to but I don't think it'll involve Charlie good.

Speaker 1 (14:03):
No, I'd be happy with that. I'd be good with that. Hey, Joe,
I appreciate the time.

Speaker 3 (14:08):
Again.

Speaker 1 (14:08):
Tell the guys I know they lost their friend. They
moved on, but huge two points on the table tomorrow.
So get in there with that thing around a little bit.

Speaker 2 (14:18):
Let's hope, let's hope, go get them. Thanks for the
call today, I appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (14:21):
Thank you, Joe,
