Jesse Rutherford from The NBHD came to play in the DC101 Sound Stage and we had a great live chat in front of the audience! We talked about the band being away for a few years, the nerves of coming back, being free from everything else when they're doing a show, the custom Hula Girl figures and how he has everything he needs on the road right now.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Jesse Rotherford.

Speaker 2 (00:00):
Ladies and gentlemen, Jesse, thanks for coming here to DC
one on one for us, man. This is really cool.
First off, I think everyone needs to know about Anthony.
You gotta tell us his whole story.

Speaker 3 (00:12):
Uh found Anthony on the streets of Bakersfield. Well I didn't,
but somebody did. Then they rescued him and put him
in a pit bull rescue and then I found him
at the pitbull rescue and that's my king.

Speaker 4 (00:25):
He's good. He's a good road dog. He's the best.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
It's pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
If you guys didn't see, he's got a little like
lamin it on his necklace there on his collar. He's
got VIP everywhere to go. Well, Jesse, you guys you
know everything I've been seeing. It feels like it's a
whole new energy, whole new vibe for the neighborhood. After
you guys took off a couple of years. How are
you feeling about everything coming back. I'm just so grateful.
I'm honestly, it's it's it's the coolest thing ever. It

(00:51):
feels new again. Yeah, I just feel like the luckiest
guy Onnerds. Honestly, it's been so great. The shows have
been fucking sweet, so cool.

Speaker 4 (01:01):
I can't wait for you who's coming to the show?
And night I heard somewhat of a round of them puff, okay.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Cool, a lot of tonight, a lot of tomorrow.

Speaker 4 (01:07):
It's gonna be dope.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
Was there a lot of nervousness coming back after that
long being.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
Away for a couple of years?

Speaker 4 (01:14):
Sure?

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Yeah, some ways, yeah, yeah, yeah, not really like yeah,
actually absolutely yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
I mean like it has gotten.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Better because like now we like started doing it and like, honestly,
it's just like our fans are like they like really
are kind of the reason why any of this has
ever been able to happen. But now more than ever,
just seeing it in numbers like this is pretty beyond me.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
Yeah, to look at your tour schedule.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
I mean, I don't know if you guys have seen,
but like they're sold out tonight tomorrow at the Anthem,
sold out for the first show in Austin, and Madison
Square Garden coming up, and then you got all these
festivals over in Europe and everything. So I think if
there were nerves about coming back, no nerves anymore.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
You guys are good.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
Once once everything sold out so fast, it was like
a different type of nerves.

Speaker 4 (02:01):
Yeah, oh shit, because yeah, it was so cool.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
Yeah. And then the stage production.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
From what I've seen from the shows, I don't want
to ruin anything for anyone tonight, but it looks pretty simple,
like you guys are trying to just keep it like, Hey,
we're here together, hanging out.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
It's the band, it's you guys. Let's do this.

Speaker 4 (02:20):
We're getting there. Yeah, we're getting there.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
I mean the songs and us being together and being
with you guys is fully the point. So but the
production thing is like it's exciting, but it's it's daunting
and it's new for us because you know, that didn't
used to be the situation. We would have like a
banner and I would do acrobatics from a swinging chain

(02:43):
mic that was probably very illegal, but you know we
made it work.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
Whatever. Man, it's on the stage, they're not gonna stop you.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
What was that first night like in Austin though a
couple I mean, it hasn't been that long, just a
couple of days ago. How is it like five minutes
before you're on stage? And then when did you really
feel comfort during the set?

Speaker 3 (03:02):
I honestly, it's kind of like my my my comfort place.
So before I'm about to go on, you know, I
kind of speak for myself. I think all the boys
have their their different, you know, ways of feeling about
performing and stepping on a stage. But I don't know,
I just get really like zen and just like but

(03:23):
like excited. Also like I don't have my cell phone
on me, so like I'm not attached.

Speaker 4 (03:28):
I'm not. I like that part.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
I like knowing there's like nothing else in the world
that I'm about to do other than just go play
for you guys, and like that's it. Yeah, so it's
kind of it kind of makes it peaceful for me.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
You got two hours of doing what I love to do.
Not quite too We'll get there though. Yeah, but well
about about there. And I also like that at the
Toronto show. I don't know if you guys saw this
on uh on the Neighborhood Socials, but they made you
neighborhood hula girls.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
That's pretty cool.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
It was incredible. Yeah, it was so customed out. Oh,
I loved it. I'm obsessed.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Are they on the dashboard of the tour bus right now?

Speaker 3 (04:03):
No, I don't know where they are yet, but that's
a great idea or they still in the boxes.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
They're collector's items. They're one of a kind, so.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
They are I know, Like I immediately I was just like,
my mom's gonna put this on.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
I thought it might be cool, like because.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
We were at a show one time and State Farm
was there and they made like they took your photo
and put it in a potted plant or something. I
thought it'd be cool if you guys did neighborhood Hula
girls on the web store, and maybe that could be
something that you guys do sell.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
We sell a dashboard hula girl like a skeleton dashboard
hulig girl for merch. It's beautiful. It's my favorite piece
of merch we've ever made.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
It's gonna sell out quick tonight. You guys better get
there quick and buy it. Yeah, whoever has a whoever
has tickets for two just saying you can't afford not
to buy it.

Speaker 4 (04:47):
Quite honestly, I mean, that's definitely what I don't know.
I'm gonna shut up.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
It's sweet though, So Jesse, thank you for coming here
to our DC one oh one sound stage playing for
us today.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
It's a real treat for us. What do you need
when you're on the road.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
You're you're gonna be living out of a suitcase for
the next year right now and probably longer than that.
What do you need every day to feel comfortable? To
make you feel like, all right, there's some sense of
normalcy to this whole circus life that is touring.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
Well, that's where I get it so easy. Like at
this point, I have my dog with me on the road,
so like that's I don't have to miss him. You know,
I miss like my mom and my sister. But my
sister lives in South Carolina. My mom, you know, we
talk on the phone all the time even when I'm home,

(05:33):
you know, so I don't I'm not really missing much.
I have like all of my closest friends out here
for the most part.

Speaker 4 (05:39):
Like pretty sweet. I could. I think I could do
this for a while.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
That's all right, that's all right. What about what about
food wise? What do you need before the show to eat?

Speaker 4 (05:48):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (05:48):
I don't really eat before the show. I'm like a
naughty afterwards eater.

Speaker 1 (05:55):
Then you get after it once the show's over.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
Yeah, pretty much. Well, because yeah, I'll eat like I'll
eat like a breakfast. Uh, I'm so plain and standard
and boring with food all the time. And then I
mean we've been living like kings lately and just having
a steak like every night after the show.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
That's not too bad either, he lives.

Speaker 4 (06:13):
No, it's fucking awesome. Yeah, so I've eaten steak lately.
Things are looking up, brother.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
Yeah, when you're at stake, it's it's better than chips
and uh, you know nothing else, that's it.

Speaker 3 (06:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (06:27):
True.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
Well, you guys want to hear some more music. Should
we get one more from Jesse? All right, Jesse Rothfort's
here with us here in the DC one on one
sound stage,
