(01:24):
crew up here, though, as we have gone to from
the last couple of years, on these bye weeks with
no game this Saturday, we give head coach PJ. Fleck
the week off from the show and we bring two
players out and back for a return visit. He had
so much fun the first time. Quarterback Drake Lindsey Ladies
and Gentlemen is here again. The rumor was once it was,

(01:44):
you know, we need to find two guys to come.

Speaker 4 (01:46):
You were volunteering.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
You had so much fun the last time, right yep, yeah, exactly,
and his first time visit here at the Tipsy Steer.
Let's give a round of applause to safety Coy Perrich.
All right, so we're ready to roll off of an
overtime win twenty three to twenty over the Michigan State Spartans,
and a lot certainly to talk about.

Speaker 4 (02:07):
First of all, just Drake will start with you.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
How good did it feel to to get the win
after there were some you know, some turns and twist
in that game.

Speaker 5 (02:16):
Yeah, you know, obviously it felt really good at the end.
We got to do a better We got to do
a better job, you know, starting fast, and the defense
played a great game. We got to help them out more.
But ultimately, you know, we that was a culture win,
and I mean, when it comes down to it, our
playmakers make plays in critical situations and we just got
to you know, that final drive, that two minute drive.

(02:37):
We got to implement that the whole game and attempt
to execute like that.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
What was it about for you as a quarterback on
that final drive that allowed you to maybe rise to
the occasion because they had they had had some success
kind of trying to shut the offense down a little
bit after halftime.

Speaker 5 (02:53):
Yeah, you know, I think when you get in the
two minute situation, you're obviously running your base plays that
you're really good at, and they have to do their
base coverages. That's their day one install. And that's kind
of what Harbo told me before the game, because that's
the last thing he does is watch two minute and
tell me the plays that he's thinking. If we get
in that situation, tell me what coverage they're running. Obviously
I've already seen it. But when you get in that

(03:14):
mindset where it's just you're getting up tempo, you're snapping
the ball, making your protection call, and seeing the coverage
really quick, you got to make decisive decisions and be
really on point. And I think when you get in
that situation, you know you're not thinking much, you're just
going so and you obviously know the base looks. So
it was a good drive.

Speaker 4 (03:29):
Yeah, it was a do or die drive.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
If you don't score there, you you know the game
is he ends up on the wrong end of the
win loss column. So, and we'll talk more about everything
involving that drive, but you can get the touchdown. Was
there any part of you that was hoping two point
conversion and end it right there? Did you say, now
let's get to overtime and we'll win it there?

Speaker 5 (03:49):
I thought about it, but I thought we were doing
a really good job executing up into that drive, and
I thought Coach Fleck would kick the extra point to
get us into overtime, and glad he did, because you
didn't we didn't have to see the two point version obviously.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
So yeah, no doubt. And then once you scored, there
was still a little time. You scored too soon, right,
it was just too early? No, you guys, you left
a little time in Koy perrits in the gang then
was able to get the stop to UH to ensure overtime.

Speaker 4 (04:13):
Koy.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
What were you watching from the sideline as the U
as Drake was leading the team down there to send
the game to overtime? What was what was your emotion
down there?

Speaker 5 (04:22):
I remember as Drake steff arm and.

Speaker 7 (04:24):
That guy than that, I'm I'm happy we won that game.

Speaker 5 (04:31):
That's clear.

Speaker 7 (04:31):
Obviously Drake's clutching and let us Yeah.

Speaker 4 (04:35):
No doubt about it.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
That that stiff arm came in the overtime, which we'll
talk about as well. Take me through, Koy. Defensively. You
guys had six sacks in that first half. You guys
were all over the place pitch the shutout. They had
kind of had that weird UH play where a couple
of guys you know, tripped or hit each other on
the on the long touchdown to to kind of give
them some new life. Walk me through defensively what you

(04:58):
thought of the game and and obviously you want to
win the game. You did win the game, but defensively
assess the goalfers.

Speaker 7 (05:04):
On Saturday, I think us as the defense, we came out,
we came out pretty fast. I think we got a
couple of stops right away. And with seven sacks I
think in the whole game, and then six in the
first half, we obviously we're getting home the coverage. We
could obviously be better and be a little more sticky

(05:25):
to them.

Speaker 5 (05:25):
But and then we all got to.

Speaker 7 (05:27):
Like, we all got to do it together, and I
think and then in the second half they started getting
these big plays and this was really that's the only
thing that where you gave up. We gave up like
two hundred and one yards and three plays, and you
can't only have that, I mean four into sixty yards
of offense.

Speaker 5 (05:45):
We just got to play better as a whole, and
but probably we got to win.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
Yeah, obviously the you know, you want to limit the explosives.
You mentioned the three, the three that they had. But
at the end of the day, you recover and to
win games, you have to make game winning place.

Speaker 4 (06:00):
So talkers through.

Speaker 3 (06:01):
Once Drake scored to tie it, and then you guys
had to keep them out of field goal range and
get the stop. What was the mindset heading back to
the field there and I forget what was there twenty
twenty ar seconds maybe or third, I can't remember now,
But what was the mindset heading out there?

Speaker 4 (06:15):
To make sure the game got to ot?

Speaker 7 (06:18):
Make sure you keep everything in front of you, doing
anybody get behind you wearing a three date deep safety
like so just make sure another whiteouts give you high
tackle everything that's in front of your dole I get
out of mouse.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
So then it gets to overtime and the gofers win
the toss and you normally, almost always you want to
go second because then you know you know what you
need in the in the bottom half, and you guys
were able to force the field goal. So what was
what was the mindset going into that overtime to know
if you can hold them Obviously you'd love to hold
them to nothing, but if you get them to a

(06:49):
field goal, then that gives you the opportunity to win it.
So what was when you guys headed out there, what
was the thought and the discussion in that huddle.

Speaker 7 (06:57):
Yeah, our first over time I as a team, and
my my college career too, and the last two years,
so we've got a lot of time to prepare we
knew we just went over when we we were going
over uh in the game plan, and we are all
talking together in the holod line.

Speaker 5 (07:17):
We're all together as one unit.

Speaker 7 (07:19):
And then just to make a stop the first first possession,
I think they get sixty hoards and then we get
a stop for the get uh even game on second
and then ultimately they picked up that flag.

Speaker 4 (07:33):
That was good, That was good, that was great.

Speaker 3 (07:35):
Yeah, and then you get the you get to stop
on four on a third down to force the field goal,
and then you hand it over the offense's hands. And
from that standpoint, now, Drake, the defense did its job
and so now it's they handed to you and on
on the serving trade to go try to to win it.

Speaker 4 (07:53):
So what's the the offense's mindset?

Speaker 3 (07:55):
And by the way, coy mentioned it was their first
overtime game as a team in his two years here,
believe it or not, And maybe some of you read
this or heard us talking about the radio, that was
the first overtime game in the history of that stadium.
The Gophers at home and Huntingdon Bank and TCF Bank
had never played in sixteen years, they had never played
an overtime game. There, which is hard to believe. We

(08:15):
had to double check the numbers on that. The Vikings
played two overtime games there when they called that stadium
home for the two seasons.

Speaker 4 (08:23):
They had two overtime games there, but there was.

Speaker 3 (08:25):
Never a Gopher overtime games, so you guys hadn't experienced overtime.
You get the stop in the in the top of
the first overtime, and now it's it's a chance for offensively,
you guys to go take the game.

Speaker 5 (08:37):
Yeah, you know, I think going into that when we
won the toss, obviously defense I mean you're you're praying
to get a stop, and I had all the confidences
in the world. And then when they forced them to
a field goal, you know, obviously you're hoping they miss.
But then when they make it, it's like, all right,
let's go, let's go win the game. That's time kind
of my mindset entering the huddle. You know, give given
everybody confidence that they're gonna go make a play to

(08:58):
win the game. No matter who it is, someone's gonna
make the play. And then we had that third down
that we'll make. You ran a great route, drew the flag,
got us down to the four yard line, which was
ultimately huge because at that point, just beat the ball
is the number one thing, you know, make sure you're
getting the quarterbacks center exchange, getting into the running back
carefully and then letting the running back, you know, making

(09:21):
sure he knows the ball the ball, the ball, because
you obviously can't turn the ball over there.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
But no one were in.

Speaker 5 (09:26):
Field goal range obviously at a at a chip for Brady.
And then get to the third down and Harbo told
me to keep it. I think it would have been
a little cleaner if I had a good fake, but
I kind of rushed it, but then that guy was
out there and I just knew I had to make
a miss. And then obviously didn't want to extend the
ball across the pylon because something happens and it rolls
out of the back and I fumbled, and the game's

(09:47):
over right there. So maybe just do a little better
job diving in the end zone, making it a little cleaner.

Speaker 4 (09:52):
But and they did end up reviewing the place. So
what's going through your mind?

Speaker 3 (09:56):
I mean, and that's a tough thing in sports, right
you guys, You know, one hundred of you guys are
in that corner celebrating, guys are throwing helmets. It's a
nice emotional win. And then all of a sudden you
hear the scoring play is under review. We're really on
the field, touchdown, it's under review. Now what goes through
your mind?

Speaker 4 (10:13):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (10:13):
You know, I didn't. I didn't even notice my toe
obvious step out of bounds.

Speaker 4 (10:16):
I thought I was in.

Speaker 5 (10:16):
Pretty clean, and then when I watched the replay, I
was like, oh, it's pretty close. Yeah, So obviously I
was hoping. I was like, all right, just be a touchdown. Ultimately,
I knew we were at like the inch line if
they didn't call it a touchdown. So I mean, we
would have probably just put two big guys behind me
or something and QB sneak didn't got in there either way.

(10:38):
But I mean, I'm glad we didn't have to see that.

Speaker 3 (10:39):
Yeah, and I think the review was right too, because
there was never the clear line your foot was out.
But that does I think a lot of people misinterpreted, Well,
it was foots out of bounds, it's not a touchdown.
But if the ball is ahead of that mark, which
it was, if it's over the goal line when you
step out, it's a it's a touchdown, and I think
if I had to bet, you know, the safety of
everyone in this room's on it, I would say you

(11:01):
crossed it.

Speaker 4 (11:02):
But there was never a definitive thing that said you didn't.

Speaker 5 (11:04):
So I think it was just really bang bang, like
right when my own right it was chen and then
right when the tip of the ball hit to wipe
my foot when out of bound, So it was like
it happened right at the same time where it's like
you can't really overturn it. It's one yeah, things I feel.

Speaker 4 (11:16):
Like I agreed. All right, Well, let's take our first
break here. We'll come back.

Seventeen to ten Michigan State the league quarterback Sneak Lindsay
carols his way close to the goal line. Clock continues
to wine touchdown, touchdown Minnesota.

Speaker 4 (17:33):
And the extra point unit is coming on to tie
the game.

Speaker 3 (17:37):
Now an I formation from the three pierman the fullback
in motion Bibber, there is play action rolling left.

Speaker 2 (17:45):
Lindsay, he start rooming to the five.

Speaker 5 (17:49):
Touchdown. Fair Lipsy on the boot link.

Speaker 3 (17:57):
Yeah, there it is the AVR remix, Drake Lindsay. Back
to back touchdowns, a sneak and a bootleg, and the
golfers get the win. So I want to ask you
about both those plays. Let's start with the game winner first.
We talked a little bit about it. But you said
that Harbo told you to keep it. Did the rest
of the team also know that or did you blindly
call the play thinking they were blocking for Femi to

(18:20):
score a touchdown?

Speaker 5 (18:21):
Yeah, no one else knew it. So I was saying
that he said to play in my helmet and I
was saying, it's the offense. And then like he was
talking to the coaches, and I guess he actually hit
the button and he heard he said, I'm gonna tell
him to keep it, and I was finishing the play
on I was like ready break, and I was like, oh,
here we go. I'd never done it before, never even

(18:42):
attempted to practice anything. So I was like, all right,
well you want we could play? And then I saw
that dude just hanging out over there. I kept looking
at him and no one knew, and then I just
I didn't have a great fake, which I think would
have ultimately helped me. Kind of been like Peyton Manny
where he just walked in told was on the running back,
but didn't work out like that. The guy was hanging
out and just had to, you know, do something, and

(19:04):
then just defarmed him and then it was just a
race of the pylon.

Speaker 4 (19:07):
Yeah, and you won the footle there.

Speaker 3 (19:09):
So what's the maybe you don't want to tell, what's
the play call itself? I think PJ mentioned the post
game something power or something like that.

Speaker 5 (19:16):
Yeah, it's just thirty four blasts, thirty.

Speaker 4 (19:18):
Four blasts, So you call thirty four blast.

Speaker 3 (19:20):
Everyone on the team that's out there is thinking that
that that's going to be a handoff except the guy
who keeps it and score.

Speaker 15 (19:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (19:27):
And then he told me again to keep it like
because it cuts out at like fifteen, and he had
said it at six, he had said it like twenty,
and then he told me he's he's like, hey, keep
it here and hit fifteen and then he cut out,
and I was like, I already kind of knew, but
it was a funny story after because like, I'm breaking
the huddle on and he said it to the coaches
and actually.

Speaker 3 (19:43):
Beat me in so I was like, oh god, yeah,
and the rest is history. We had a person here
in attendance that came over. Do you think you'd have
gone for it? You mentioned you might have sneaked because
you can and go to a second overtime or if
you if it's you know, overruled, or if you don't
make it and you get it, you know you're down
there by a yard or whatever, do you think you'd
have gone Do you think PJ would have gone for Yeah?

Speaker 5 (20:04):
I think we would have, just because you know, it
was it was too close not to if it was
from like the one or the two, probably not. Like
if we would have got if I would have got
tackled at like the three yard line, two yard line,
probably not. But with being like at the inch, I
think we're getting, you know, I think we're getting a
QB sneak just by getting pushed even a little bit ultimately,
So yeah, I think.

Speaker 3 (20:22):
So I didn't have to worry about it. I didn't
have to worry about it. Now, the quarterback sneak that
was from like two yards out. That wasn't a normal
like as you mentioned inside the one or whatever. So
walk us through that play call and was that was
that on your own or was that always a quarterback
sneak from from there it's almost three yards you know?

Speaker 5 (20:38):
You know, No, it wasn't either. That was the same
play as well. And then Harboro had beeped in again
in my helmet and said, make make a check to
the center aston Biers. So I just said a certain
thing to him that tells him that me and him
are aligned because there was an open that there was
an open a gap because the guy was in a
three technique, so he just went the other way and

(21:01):
I went right right at that gap. And then Greg
Johnson heard it too because he was the center last year,
so ultimately he knew to not go left when he
was supposed to, so he went right. And then I
just had to you know, that guy was maybe right
in the hole and I just went under him a
little bit. But no, that wasn't the called one either.

Speaker 3 (21:15):
Wow, So pretty clutch plays there to to get that
game tied and then get that game one. And I always,
you know, like the kind of behind the scenes stuff
to getting I mean, we're getting the inside scoop here
from the quarterback who scored those two touchdowns.

Speaker 4 (21:30):
Is to as to how it unfolds.

Speaker 3 (21:31):
And I think for for folks who don't fully understand
this is year is it two now of the in
helmet communication?

Speaker 12 (21:37):
Me?

Speaker 5 (21:37):
A year two?

Speaker 4 (21:37):
Yeah too, So what happens?

Speaker 3 (21:39):
Why don't you take us through what happens without going
into too much detail in terms of like specific plays.
I don't think Pej would like us to discuss that,
but how that process works with you and Greg Harboll.

Speaker 5 (21:48):
Yeah. So the first thing he does right after the
play ends, this give me the personnel for the players
that are supposed to be in there. So we have
a coach on the sideline that's signaling it for the
people that are on the sideline and saying it out
loud so those guys can come in and I have
to make sure I'm screaming it. So if you see
fingers up in the air, that's usually what I'm doing
after the play is letting them know the personnel and

(22:09):
I'm screaming it so they can get in and out
of the huddle or getting that in and out because
we have some really wordy play calls, so obviously we
want to get in and out of the huddle very
quick so I can get the look and then ultimately
get us in the right look so we can be
as a successful offense as we can.

Speaker 3 (22:23):
And then he can talk to you if you guys
break the huddle or sometimes you're in no huddle and
you're right up there. Let's say there's you know, twenty
four seconds left on the play clock, yeah, the game clock,
but the forty second clock. He still can chat with
you while you're looking over the defense as well, and
how often does he do that and what kind of
things might he be helping you with there as well?

Speaker 5 (22:43):
Yeah, also, yeah, so when it hits fifteen, he cuts out.
So I've had a few instances where like we're breaking
the huddle and he's finishing saying the play call, and
like right before he finishes it, he cuts out. And
then I kind of like remembered from out throughout game planning,
like what the final part was, because there's only obviously
so many things it could have been with the first
tagged concept. But yeah, when we do Indy, he's usually like,

(23:05):
you know, if they're not lined up. You know, he's
he usually lets me get sick because he wants me
to be able to make the right at protection call
see what they're in on defense. But he talks a
little bit. I feel like cal Berkeley. He talked a
good amount to me during those situations. But he's kind
of similar down. But there's definitely times when he's like, hey,
you're about to get this, and then he's spot on.
But it doesn't happen too much, but he's definitely in

(23:27):
there talking to me. He's like, hey, you're seeing it right.
It's usually mostly on the sideline with the player phone,
I would say, is when he's really.

Speaker 4 (23:33):
Talking to me.

Speaker 3 (23:33):
Yeah, And so that would be when when when you
guys are done and then Koy and the gang goes
out there, they give you a chance and it's actually
literally a phone, right, Yeah, it's like the old school phone. Yeah,
and he's up there and you're down there, and then
you share info as well. Yeah, how about the tablet?
How much does that help the I don't know where
the iPad, Microsoft and whatever they are.

Speaker 4 (23:51):
What do you guys do with those?

Speaker 5 (23:53):
Yeah? You know those are huge because I mean when
you get to the sideline, There's been a lot of
instances when you know, you plan for the defense doing
specific big things, but obviously you're planning on the pass,
like you, they're gonna add something new, They're not gonna
do the exact same thing they did the game before.
So when you get to the sideline after the first
first drive with what they come out in the first
couple of plays is usually what the defense is.

Speaker 4 (24:13):
Going to do for that day.

Speaker 5 (24:14):
There's gonna be some mix ups, but that's their base
thing they came in. We're going to do this to
establish it. And seeing that, you know, it's really helpful
because then you're like, all right, we got to attack them,
maybe a different way than we thought, or you know,
they did exactly what we thought, and we just got
to keep going and then expect something to be thrown
at you that you may maybe haven't scene, but don't
be thrown off guard.

Speaker 4 (24:34):
Yeah, very good. Well, I think we've talked long enough.

Speaker 3 (24:36):
Quoy has his lunch done now, so we can we
can start asking him questions over there.

Speaker 4 (24:40):
I'm just kidding.

Speaker 3 (24:41):
I'm just just teasing you a little bit here, But
as as all of that is happening defensively, who usually
is the guy that Danny Collins is talking to UH
to set plays and those kind of things.

Speaker 5 (24:53):
Maver Baranowski, he's got the green dot.

Speaker 7 (24:56):
He does a really good job. He does all our
checks from anything in the offense does. He does a
really good job gets the communication out. But we don't
really have a lot of communication issues. But obviously we
need to be better, and we had a couple this
last game.

Speaker 5 (25:10):
We just need to be better.

Speaker 3 (25:12):
And once the play call then comes in, it's I mean,
obviously you don't want to give away how it happens,
but then you just communicated everybody and hand signals often
and verbally too, I suppose.

Speaker 7 (25:22):
Yeah, so MAV gets it through the green dive, like
he can use his voice when he's on the field,
but we also have a single caller or wristbands to
get the play call in and ultimately you can get.

Speaker 5 (25:36):
It through one of those three. Yeah, you have to
make your checks from there.

Speaker 3 (25:39):
If you mentioned when you have a miscommunication out there,
how does the correction happen in game? Then you go
to the side. Sometimes it might be in the middle
of a drive and might have to wait, or you
might have to in game or in drive corrected, But
talk me through how that communication goes to make sure
everyone is on the same page.

Speaker 7 (25:57):
Yeah, the iPad's definitely changed the game. Obviously I have
anver betting call without them. But Danny Collins said, like
it's crazy how much he can actually adapt throughout the
game and throughout the game plan. Just what joke said
with seeing like what they're doing, I think they're very beneficial.
You'd see you can see your mistakes, also see what

(26:17):
you're doing well, and let's see how they're going to taculate.

Speaker 5 (26:20):
Her out of the game.

Speaker 4 (26:22):
Have you noticed this year for you with with the
great year you had last year?

Speaker 3 (26:26):
I think PJ even mentioned maybe a couple of weeks ago,
the teams will game plan because they know you're such
a good player that they will try to create action
that will avoid getting the ball into your area. So
take me through if you've noticed that, and how you
try to combat that to still be a factor. Because
you're amongst the team leaders and tackles. Obviously had the
big pick six against Purdue. You're impacting the game every play.

(26:49):
But have you noticed that and if so, how do
you how do you try to continue to to show
up in games?

Speaker 4 (26:55):
And have the impact you've had.

Speaker 5 (26:58):
Throughout the game.

Speaker 7 (26:58):
I don't really try and then I just try to
run the ball if it comes my way or on
the opposite.

Speaker 5 (27:04):
Side of the field.

Speaker 7 (27:05):
I'm not really keeping drag inside of my head if
they're going to me or not. Ultimately, just do your
job with out of the day. Your job is one
on eleven on.

Speaker 3 (27:13):
The field, and when it ends up in your neighborhood,
then you got to make the play, right, got to
make the play.

Speaker 4 (27:19):
Yeah, exactly, all right, we're going to take another break.
We're at the bottom of the hour.

Weekly here on the Gopher Sports Network, Mike Grim with you.
JG is off today, Well, he's off from the show.
He's got women's basketball tonight. He's over at their shoot
around here taping some stuff for the show and the
broadcast this evening.

Speaker 4 (28:35):
Also hard to believe.

Speaker 3 (28:36):
Just one home game left Gopher fans, and don't miss
out on the Gopher Garden. That's the pregame fan fest.
It's presented by Huntington Bank. Located on Oak Street outside
the stadium, Gopher Garden opens three hours before every home game.
You can catch the Gopher Football pregame Show with JG.
You can enjoy the Pride of Minnesota marching bands, pregame
concert and all the excitement leading up to kick off.

Speaker 4 (28:56):
The Gopher Garden presented by.

Speaker 3 (28:58):
Huntington, by a couple of other quick program notes before
we get back to it.

Speaker 4 (29:01):
Here with Drake, Lindsay and Coy Perrich.

Speaker 3 (29:04):
Next week's show, we have an interesting schedule, so we
will be here at the restaurant. But because it's a
Friday game and the football staff, and we've always talked
with PJ and teased them a little about it, they
stay on their day so a Friday game is still
a Saturday to them. So next week for them, Monday
is Tuesday, if that makes sense. So here's how we're
going to do this next week. It'll be like a

(29:24):
game show. We'll have a live studio audience on Monday,
So come watch the show in person on Monday noon
to one. Right here, Coach will be back and we'll
preview the Oregon game, we'll talk about the bye week,
and the show will actually air on its normal time
on Tuesday.

Speaker 4 (29:39):
So it's a taping of the show. You know, it's
like the price is right or something.

Speaker 3 (29:43):
So come on out live studio audience on Monday noon
to one, and then you can and you know what's
fun is you can come and you can get it twice.
You can come and watch it in person and then
the next day you can listen from noon to one,
So that is next week. It's back here, but it's
Monday because that is really Tuesday on the football calendar, right,
you guys stay on the same day no matter what.

(30:03):
And it is a Friday kickoff next week, no game.
This week we have Drake, Lindsay and Koy Perrich and
I mentioned that we were going to ask you about
the bye week, so I walk through today how important
at this point of the season for you, Drake. Has
has the bye week been just to maybe recuperate, refresh
a little bit, you know, get your mind restocked?

Speaker 4 (30:24):
Talk about that a little bit.

Speaker 5 (30:25):
Yeah, you know, I think it's very critical because you
you don't really understand what a six week stretch of
the Big ten's like till you're really playing it. And
it's week after week after week after week, no matter
if it's our house state or Michigan State or whoever
it is. You know, everyone's everyone's there to win, so
you got to bring it every single week. But it
definitely feels great, you know, getting a few days to
rest my mind, rest my body for the whole team,

(30:48):
you know, getting ourselves back and you know, ready to
go to Oregon.

Speaker 4 (30:51):
Yeah, and koy for you.

Speaker 3 (30:52):
Now, you're if if Drake's guys up front do their job,
he's not taking a lot of hard, violent hits, you
hope not. Obviously he had, you know, a couple of
run sneaks and stuff. But when you're defensively like you
and you play the way you do, you're throwing your
body around and trying to deliver some violence out there
on the field.

Speaker 4 (31:09):
Of course. So how important has this.

Speaker 3 (31:11):
Been for you guys, particularly on defense, just to kind
of to rest and recuperate.

Speaker 5 (31:16):
Yeah, for us on defense, it's it's just crucial for us.

Speaker 13 (31:19):
We get it.

Speaker 7 (31:19):
We need a lot more time just to for all
our injuries just to get back and we have a
lot of injuries and I'm not going to speak on
but we just got it. We just need this time
to get to just get healthy. And it's very it's
going to be a good week for.

Speaker 3 (31:34):
Us from a purely taking care of your body standpoint.
Can you kind of put us in your mind for
a minute, what's a week like, whether it's by week
or not, in terms of making sure your body's ready
and rested. And I know, I don't know if you
do it, but a lot of the guys will do
cold baths, hot baths. They've got the little gun things
that massage the muscles, and you know, chiropractors sometimes come

(31:55):
around for you. How do you make sure that you're
maintaining your body well enough to hit the field every Saturday.

Speaker 5 (32:02):
Yeah, you just have to get an into routine. Like
I have a good routine. Obviously, we have our meetings
right after the game, but on Mondays.

Speaker 7 (32:09):
It's our off day, so you get in there, you
get two hours of treatment, whether that's hot tubs, cold tubs,
the sauna.

Speaker 5 (32:17):
Get swim ability and water pool or any of that.

Speaker 7 (32:21):
Just moving around, getting getting your legs back. That's the
biggest thing. You gotta have stick and a good routine.
And our coaches really do a good job that, especially
our Shink coaches. I think there's some of the best
in the country and they really help us in that.

Speaker 3 (32:34):
And Drake, you were telling me before we came on
the year, this is during the season, not just a
bye week. That the amount that a player on the
team will lift depends almost directly on how much they play,
and if they're not playing that much, they want to
develop for next year, and they'll lift more during the
season because lifting, while it has a lot of benefits,

(32:56):
during the season, you also don't want to I suppose
wear the body out and put the muscles in two
much strength.

Speaker 4 (33:00):
So talks through kind of how that works.

Speaker 5 (33:02):
Yeah, So for obviously the guys that are like playing
and starting, uh, you're a two day lifter, so you
Tuesday are Sundays and Wednesdays. Sundays are your more heavy
day because it's after the day we're squatting and stuff
like that, getting our getting our legs back, flushing everything out.
And then Wednesdays is you know, keeping everything right. I
think it's more of a maintaining thing because obviously you

(33:23):
can't gain too much strength in the season. It's more
maintaining your body, making sure you're staying flexible, making sure
you're getting all the right stuff. And then for the
freshmen or people that you know aren't necessarily playing, we'll
be on like the four day card where it's more
more so off season for them so they can keep
building and keep getting better.

Speaker 3 (33:40):
So we can keep developing, yeah, and get stronger and
faster in terms of speed. Obviously, with the blazing speed
you had on that touchdown. How much is that weight
room helping.

Speaker 15 (33:49):
You for that?

Speaker 5 (33:50):
Yeah, I think it's helping me a lot. I mean, yeah,
I think I've gotten a little quicker since I've gotten
here on campus. Obviously, I want to keep developing that
and keep working on things this offseason, whether it's balance
or just different things, so I can continue to, you know,
get better and help the team.

Speaker 3 (34:07):
Yeah, because you have some athletic ability, so a step
quicker can make the difference, right, So you keep working
on it, no doubt. Speaking of athleticism, coy, I did
want to say when when Drake was here the first
time around, he was I will say, bragging a little
bit about how he was kicking your butt on the
golf course all summer. So I'll give you now a
chance for the first time to defend yourself in that.

Speaker 4 (34:29):
In that array of comments, I'm not man's not much
to comment on that.

Speaker 5 (34:39):
Well, Drake's been playing golf a lot longer than me. Yeah,
he's been playing for like since he's been two.

Speaker 7 (34:45):
He went to like the World Amateur Golf Championship and played.

Speaker 5 (34:49):
In it, and yeah, and chokes, but.

Speaker 4 (34:55):
Here it comes. Now we're going.

Speaker 3 (34:57):
Now, we got a good show now we're getting spicy
here a little bit.

Speaker 4 (35:01):
So you played in the World Amateur. How old were you?

Speaker 5 (35:06):
It was the US Kids like World Championship in Pinehurst,
North Carolina. I was ten or eleven years old, and
I remember after the first I shot like a seventy
two or three the first day and I was in
like sixth place. And then I'm like teeing off with
all these dudes, and like the leader shot like six
under at ten years old, and I'm like these kids
are now. He was like he was from like Japan

(35:26):
or something like I didn't. I was. And then first
t shot, I'm like up there and all the start
like the last group's right behind me. First drive on
the second day on a part five hits like the
left side of the car path and kicks out of bounds,
and then I ended up like hid it in the water,
and then like four putting it had made a ten
on the first hole, and I was like, good Lord.
And then then I went even through like the next sixteen,

(35:48):
and then made another ten on the eighteen and shot
like a eighty four with two tens, and I was,
I was so, I was so hurt. I went from
like sixth place to like forty fifth and I was
I was pretty brutal day for me that day. Yeah,
So when did you start golfing? I grew up on
a golf course Stot. I mean, my dad was always
out there golfing. I would say, like three years old.
This was the first time I put a club in

(36:09):
my hand two years old. But I really started golf
when I was like five or six.

Speaker 15 (36:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (36:13):
If I would have asked let's say, thirteen or fourteen
year old Drake Lindsay and said, hey, you're going to
be a college athlete, what sport do you think would be?

Speaker 5 (36:21):
Would have been golf or football. I think when you
asked me if I was thirteen or fourteen, and it
probably would have been golf. I feel like once I
got to like thirteen fourteen, I started transitioning a little
bit to football. But if you had asked me when
I was like ten or eleven, I would have told
you I was gonna win a green jacket for sure.

Speaker 4 (36:38):
What's a normal round now for you? If you if
you play well.

Speaker 5 (36:43):
Once I get into the groove, I think the best
score I shot this year was like I think seventy
five or four tiving four or five, but it takes
a little bit. Like the beginning of this year, I'm
usually shooting like eighty five to eighty eight. And then
as I started playing the summer, and that's when Coley
thought he could hang with me at the beginning because
he was shooting eighty seven and I'm shooting eighty six.
He's like, I'm gonna get you by the end of
the year. And then I just kept getting better and

(37:04):
he was. He was slowly getting better because he's only
been playing for three years. But he's got a he's
got a he's got a bright future in golf. He's
got a lot of talent. Yeah, and and talk about that.

Speaker 3 (37:13):
You're a naturally gifted athlete as well.

Speaker 4 (37:16):
Coy.

Speaker 3 (37:16):
You come to the golf game a little bit late.
But have you found a lot of enjoyment, uh in
in what golf can bring you know, when you can
take a break from the football field.

Speaker 7 (37:26):
Yeah, golf is super fun, especially golfing without Drake. You're
my Me and my teammate Emma say, we just played
so much better playing without Drake.

Speaker 5 (37:38):
He got to tell him why though, It's like, you
gotta tell him why.

Speaker 4 (37:44):
Are you gonna tell us why?

Speaker 5 (37:45):
Drake. Yeah, so usually, you know, I'm I'm usually hitting first.
You know, I like to play the intimidation card with boy.
I think I told you all the Vegas story. When
we were we weren't talking talking about the score really,
and then the whole light and I was coy, we're tied,
and then I go birdie and he doubles and it's
already a three shot swing or four shots swing. But

(38:06):
it's usually just the you know, he has a bad
shot and I'm like, coy, what was that? After I
hit one like on the green and he just you
just got to get in his head like that.

Speaker 4 (38:16):
So you've just decided you're not going to include Drake
in as mini golf games.

Speaker 5 (38:20):
It's true.

Speaker 3 (38:23):
The good news too, is when you're apart and this
is you know Pj's talked about this and getting recruits
here and the value of the Twin Cities and all that.
You guys, because of your your position on the Gopher
football team, you guys get to play some pretty pretty
good courses on occasion.

Speaker 4 (38:36):
Right, You've got now it's it's all legal.

Speaker 3 (38:39):
The lumps can take you to their courses or you
guys can get on someplace else. What's the What were
the your favorite courses you played here in the summer. Coyle,
let's start with you.

Speaker 7 (38:50):
It was a good course. I know we got to
the White Bear Yacht Club nice. Oh it's fun. Uh,
definitely Rush Creek. Rush Creek was my number one course.
This here probably one of the best public quarters in Minnesota.

Speaker 12 (39:02):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (39:03):
Yeah, that's Randy Shaver has his his charity golf outing
out there and that that is. I love that course
as well. How about you, Drake, any course that stands out?

Speaker 5 (39:11):
Yeah, I'm trying to We played this course that the
Vikings go to a lot. I forgot where it's at.
It's like thirty minutes away, but it was remember me
and you played it? Stone Ridge? Stone Ridge, Yeah, stone Ridge.
That was really nice to Tarboro. Took all the quarterbacks
out the Hazel team right before fall camp, which was
obviously a dream come true. That course was beautiful.

Speaker 4 (39:28):
That's a long that's all. That's a long heart. Oh
my god.

Speaker 5 (39:31):
It was brutal, brutal course. And then I played with
Koy a lot of Rush Creek. But yeah, we went
to Oklahoma. Well, when we went to Arkansas and May,
I took the winds of this course in Oklahoma that
was super super nice. It was called the Patriot and
they have like professional tournaments there and it was it
was really cool too.

Speaker 4 (39:49):
Yeah, well, very good. That's a golf talk here on
the Golfer Radio Network. We had to we had to
bring that up. You know, we'll come back.

Speaker 3 (39:56):
We will look more at the bye week, we'll look
at next week as well with the Friday game, and
we will wrap up the show.

Speaker 4 (40:03):

So I'm wondering Oregon does play this week? They have
a Saturday game at Iowa. So does that entice you
to pay closer attention to that one now.

Speaker 4 (42:48):
That you have a Saturday off?

Speaker 5 (42:50):
Yeah, for sure, definitely watch that game to you know,
just get a feel for what they do. Obviously we'll
watch some stuff before, but it's always good to watch
it from that perspective, and I'm excited to see that game.
I think it should be a really good game at Chinnick.

Speaker 3 (43:03):
Yeah, that was well, as you know, you mentioned that
that was a tough place to play. The bounce back
factor though, for you to come back and get the
win last week. What do you think you took from
two weeks ago into last week?

Speaker 5 (43:14):
Yeah, you know, I think it was a very challenging game.
That's obviously a game you don't don't want to happen
to yourself, and you don't you don't think it will,
but when it does, it's I mean, what are you
going to do to make sure that doesn't happen the
next game? And don't let it pound on top of
another and just execute and play at a high level.
I think you've got to look at it from a
mature lens and see what you can do better for
the team and see what we need to do better

(43:36):
to make sure we can win the next one. And
obviously we didn't didn't play our best against Michigan State,
but I mean, ultimately we showed up when it mattered
and came out with to win.

Speaker 3 (43:44):
Yeah, got the got the w to get to six
and get to Bowl eligibility. And now the rest of
the month in front of you to try to tackle
some more things. And you've got a fun month. You've
got Wisconsin to end it, trying to keep Paul Bunyan Jacks.
You've got a game on a baseball field, the legendary
baseball field in Chicago, and then Koy Perrits on Friday
night next week. You've got Oregon currently ranked six in

(44:05):
the country. And I suppose that's kind of KOI what
college football is all about. You get a chance to
show up on primetime Friday night football and shock the
world right out in the Eugene next week.

Speaker 5 (44:16):
Yeah, we go back to the West coast. That should
be a good time.

Speaker 7 (44:21):
I've never been to Oregon either, haven't I ever been
to Washington? So another place, another more scenery.

Speaker 4 (44:27):
Yeah, just go have a good time. Will you also
watch the game you think Saturday?

Speaker 5 (44:31):
For sure?

Speaker 4 (44:32):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (44:32):
And what as a as a player now knowing that's
your next opponent, what kind of things do you watch?

Speaker 4 (44:36):
Do you watch it?

Speaker 3 (44:37):
I'm sure you're watching not just as a Hey, that's
a good game. Let's watch it. There's some business to
be had right watching.

Speaker 7 (44:44):
Yeah, there's obviously you can't really pick up on You
can try to pick up on tendencies, but you need
the coaches film.

Speaker 4 (44:51):
To a twenty two or whatever.

Speaker 7 (44:53):
You all all the different angles, but you just get
to watch. See how they call it, see see how
they their person is. Just yeah, they play ul to me,
it's Oregon. They're a really good team and just we're
gonna go have a good time.

Speaker 4 (45:09):
Esco, Minnesota.

Speaker 3 (45:10):
The ESCO Army comes down every Saturday to watch you
guys play. What's it meant for you to be able
to stay in your home state and play college football
here and have your hometown behind you the way it's been.

Speaker 5 (45:22):
Yeah, love Minnesota. Man.

Speaker 7 (45:23):
I grew up here in my whole life. Never I've
never left, so I've enjoyed it. Obviously, it's getting a
little cold here now, so it's just the more darker
times of the state. Well, go ahead, So it's awesome.

Speaker 3 (45:40):
What So if folks wanted to come and visit ESCO,
what would you recommend they do? Is there a statue
yet outside of coy Perrich, Oh?

Speaker 5 (45:50):
No, ESCO's just Asco. If you want to go there,
you can go figure it out.

Speaker 3 (45:57):
Well, how about Fattville, Arkansas if someone went to visit
that place at your hometown? Of course, Drake, we talked
about your path here from Arkansas and uh and by
the way, and for all my life, I've called that
fayette that Fayetteville, but it's Fayetteville.

Speaker 4 (46:13):
Yeahlle Fayetteville.

Speaker 3 (46:14):
Yep.

Speaker 4 (46:15):
So what tell us about your home city?

Speaker 5 (46:18):
There's like one hundred thousand people, So I think it's
kind of a perfect little town, you know, not not
too not too big, not too small, got a good
mix of everything. Got some really good steakhouses down there.
Herman's is really really good, Doze is good on Dixon Street.
And then going up into college town I think is
really cool, especially in sec you know, you don't get

(46:40):
a lot of opportunities at that so I think it
was a really cool place to grow up. And I
mean I loved it. I think Arkansas is a really
cool place, really good scenery. So yeah, it's a it's
a great place to live.

Speaker 3 (46:52):
Yeah, you're you're like the Convention of Visitors Bureau a president, right,
yeahoy just says go you know, you can go to
ascoh man, you'll find something. Is there a dairy queen
and Esco?

Speaker 17 (47:03):
No?

Speaker 4 (47:04):
No, nothing. Are you near a lake? Can you go
fishing there?

Speaker 3 (47:09):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (47:09):
You go lake superior.

Speaker 3 (47:10):
Man, it's right there. Yeah, no no problem at all,
No problem at all. QUI take us through. We're gonna
go back. A couple of weeks you had the big
pick six, huge play helps win the Purdue game.

Speaker 4 (47:21):
Talk us through that play and how exciting it was.

Speaker 7 (47:25):
Oh, yeah, that was super exciting. Uh, good play for
our defense. Ultimately it was a It was pretty much
a defensive pick because you only threw it because of
the show we have pre snap, and you can't do
that with everybody working together.

Speaker 4 (47:40):
And ultimately you just threw it to me. You just
got to make the play you went up and got it.
Was that you were you were hoping to deep him
into thinking you were blitzing.

Speaker 7 (47:48):
Yeah, that's ultimately what I thought of the end pre snap,
just I was blitzeding earlier in the game, So just
trying to make it look exactly like that. Say, we
got our strong safety shown in the post too, so
he thought it was that I thought I was coming
and he.

Speaker 5 (48:02):
Didn't see it.

Speaker 4 (48:03):
Yeah, and the you had to go up and get it,
and you made the play.

Speaker 3 (48:06):
As you're going down the sidelines, you're thinking score all
the way.

Speaker 5 (48:10):
Yeah, score all the way. I actually ran faster there
than I did chasing that guy down last week.

Speaker 3 (48:16):
Yeah, that was another play that I was going to
ask you that because you think about that. That was
a monster play when you know when it when it
all said and done.

Speaker 18 (48:22):
Yeah, only twenty miles an hours? Is that what the
GPS deal was? I forget what that's called. So we
have and in the back of our collar pads.

Speaker 4 (48:32):
So how what'd you hit twenty?

Speaker 5 (48:34):
It was like twenty point six.

Speaker 4 (48:35):
What's the fastest you've hit and practiced or any game?

Speaker 1 (48:37):
Is that it?

Speaker 15 (48:38):
No?

Speaker 5 (48:38):
I twenty one six?

Speaker 4 (48:40):
Wow, there are streets in ESCO you'd get a speeding
ticket for running night pass.

Speaker 5 (48:46):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (48:46):
Probably.

Speaker 3 (48:48):
All right, Well, guys, let's give our players a big
round of applause here. That was awesome. As always, we
appreciate it. Koy Parritch and Drake Lindsay. We had some
fun with those guys today. Quick reminder, no football this week,
women's hoops tonight, there's hockey this weekend, there's men's basketball Saturday.

Speaker 4 (49:04):
And next week it's a studio taping here now in
to one on Monday. The show will air on Tuesday.

Speaker 3 (49:10):
That has been go for Football Weekly with PJ Fleck
