Okay, so correct me if I'm wrong. Here the the
with the camp at your alma mater, July fifteenth, so
next week first grade up to like eighth.

Yes, sir, okay, so that's what you're looking for, ye
all right?

So why why did you decide on a Why did
you decide to have a camp?
Speaker 4 (01:28):
So for me, you know, growing up, my dad always
wanted to include me in different sports events, whether it's football, soccer, baseball,
and for me, I think that gave me a little
bit of competitive advantage, but also just being able to
get around other kids. And being in a team environment
I think really helped cultivate me as a kid. And
so I think the big goal with this camp is
(01:49):
just you know, getting these kids around other kids and
athletic events, getting them outside and just getting them around,
you know, good experiences when it comes to athletics. I
think just no matter what they want to do in
their future, you're having that you know, those experiences to
build upon is going to be really good for them.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Okay, so when you when when when you think about
inclusion and you go like first grade up to eight,
so before they get into high school, why did you
decide on on that group?
Speaker 2 (02:16):
You know?
Speaker 4 (02:17):
I really think it's just because, you know, no matter
what stage they are in their lives, I think just
being able to come out there and then it's going
to be a free camp as well. I don't want
it to be something where people have to get some
money out of their pockets to do it. All you
got to do. You don't even have to have cleats
for all for all we cares. It's all about having fun.
And I think no matter where they are in their
(02:37):
in their football life, whether their eighth grader is getting
ready to go to high school, and there they already
know the drills, and that their first graders not even
know how to get the right foot over the left.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
You know what I mean.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
It's all about just having fun and taking the kids
where they are and helping to give them a little
bit of something and some knowledge on where they want
to be in the future.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
But you got to make sure this is not daycare either.
Oh yeah, I mean you know what I'm saying. I mean,
like mom and dad. All right, Billy, Johnny Christie, soon,
Tamika Antwin, You're gonna be here for three hours. I'm
gonna go to the mall. Jackson, Willie and the rest
of the group. They got you.

It ain't that well, I mean, it's not that.

But also at the same time, I mean they are
getting free food, so you might as well drop them off. Yeah,

We'll get into some football here momentarily. When I was
when I was preparing this yesterday, I saw you on
Fox nine, So I watched a clip of you on
Fox nine, I believe with Pierre, Yes, sir, it was
relatively it was recent, maybe even last week or whatever.
(04:08):
What you're doing here with this camp at your alma mater,
Robins Zale Cooper you called an outreach or you mentioned
either you called it an outreach or you want to
start like outreaches stuff like that. Did I get that right?
What do you mean?
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Absolutely? So?
Speaker 4 (04:23):
What I meant by that is, I think a big
thing that we don't get nowadays is being able to
come together as a community. And I think that technology
has been kind of spreading these kids apart, and I
think being able to come outside, whether it's just two
hours in your day, and being able to just get
around other kids and having some older adults, We're gonna
have guys like Anthony Smith, Drake Lindsay who these kids
(04:43):
are able to look up to, not just you know,
on the TV when they see the Gophers play, but
now being able to come out to my high school
and be able to see these guys talk talk to
them a little bit, ask them about things, because I
mean when I asked these guys if they wanted to come.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
It wasn't like, you know, am I getting paid for this?
Is like what time to have to be there? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (05:00):
And I think, you know, that's what we pride ourselves on,
is the type of guys that we have on our team,
and that they're more so asking about what's time I
got to be there instead of how much I'm getting paid?
And that's I think that's just what type of character
we have on our team.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Okay, so Jackson, let's hit on middle schoolers for a second,
because in having two kids, you know, ones now twenty
five to the others twenty three, I found at that
stage of their lives that middle school from elementary to
high school that transition area right there was the trickiest
(05:34):
and I've had other parents talk to me about that too,
just with the way people grow and things that are
available technologically and so on at that age before you
get to high school. So I'm a focus on middle
schoolers here, what year round plan would you recommend for say,
middle schoolers that involve sports and community?
Speaker 1 (05:56):
So here we are in summer.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
So if you got somebody going from seventh or six
to seventh, seven to eight, something like that, and they're
either going back to middle school or going into middle school,
and it's the summer, and sometimes there ain't a lot
to do unless a parents initiate it or b kids
are interested in it. So like for middle schoolers with
sports and that community that supports sports, like, what would
(06:22):
you recommend?
Speaker 4 (06:23):
Well, I think, you know, the first thing I would
probably say is I mean, even though I'm you know,
twenty one, I still have a little a little bit
of knowledge of it. But I would say the first
thing I would say is sports diversity for those kids,
so not just being able to just specialize in just football,
but also getting to mix in some baseball, some soccer, hockey,
I mean hockey.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Definitely for Minnesota kids.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
But did you play? I played a little bit.
Speaker 4 (06:44):
Maybe my second and third year when I lived in
Saint Louis Park, But then after that I was kind
of like, I gotta go hit somebody every place.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
So yeah, I went to football after that. But that
was a big thing for me.
Speaker 4 (06:54):
Just I played baseball in high school and I also
threw track, and I think the big thing about sports
in middle school is that everything can translate over and
I think a bunch of the skills that I learned
from different sports ended up translating over to football, So
it helped me a lot. But then when it comes
to the community standpoint, I think, no matter what you do,
just finding something small, every little once in.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
A while to give back to somebody.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
I was talking to my girlfriend the other day, it's
just about like sometimes when I see people on the street,
just give them some some sort of words of positivity
and because realistically, you never know what things that you
can say that can impact somebody's day or their life
because everybody's going through different stuff.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
Man, don't don't Jackson, don't you think I mean you
God gifted you in a way where you know, physically speaking,
your desire to work. Your father played in the NFL,
was a stud at Stanford. And I know Jackson's father, Willie,
He played for the Vikings the year before I started
calling games. But but I got to know Willy over
the years, and and you know, I would imagine him
(07:55):
and your mom and your siblings have had, you know,
a lot to do with where you are now. Not
every but has that. Not everybody has a mom and
a dad in a household. Not everybody has people pushing
them like I would imagine they pushed you. So tell
me what you think of this, Like if you have
parents or people listening now who are like, I love sports,
(08:16):
My kids love sports. I want them in it. They
want to be in it. But you know what, they're
just not very good. They just haven't. You know, they
weren't blessed or gifted physically the way Jackson or some
others are. But don't stop still try right because not
only does it give you a chance to push through
barriers and make a team and be part of that
sports community year round, but there are other jobs that
(08:41):
come out of sports. By being part of teams, team managers,
you might get bit, you know, wanting to become a
certified athletic trainer, a team a team therapist, so to speak,
stuff like player development, stuff like that. There are so
many things tentacles other than just being the star athlete, right.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
Yeah, So I think, you know, for me, what I
saw at home is what I started to become. And
so when my dad showed me, you know, like we
started off just giving out free meals to families when
we were I think maybe I was in fifth grade
and my dad told me the reasoning behind that was
because we were able to And so you know, I
think now with the with the platform that I have
(09:24):
now and the things I've been able to do athletically now,
I think it'd be a disservice to my community to
not do something to give back. And so I think
when it comes to sports and parents, I think, like
I have early memories of my dad just throwing the
football around with me playing baseball, him trying to teach
me how to pitch, and then him getting mad at
me when I would throw it really hard at him.
(09:45):
Like right, I think it just it all comes down
to at home, and even though you know, some people
might not have a father at home, having a father
figure is you know, just as good. Honestly, I think
luckily for me, I had a dad at home. You know,
not everybody can say that, but making sure that you
have somebody you can look up to in life and
knowing that there's somebody out there that you can look
up to for these kids, and I think it's really
(10:06):
huge and so I mean, honestly, I think that was
a big part of my development. And just you know,
luckily my dad played in the league, But just because
he played doesn't mean I had to play as well.
I think it's just because of the the good experiences
I had around sports that led up to me really
wanted to get to my future goals.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
So so with your mother and father, how important have
they been in helping you play football in the Big
ten after, you know, starting with a cool.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
SEC school like LSU.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
I think they've been awesome.
Speaker 4 (10:40):
Sometimes one parent's got to be the nicer and the
other one's got to be a little stricter parent, and
they switch off roles sometimes, But my dad's usually the
one that's always like he he talks to me every
day after the games. He takes notes on his phone
before my coaches can even get to me about like,
you know, my miss assignment's mistackle.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
Stuff like that, because I think it's it's really because.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
He cares and d lineman because your dad was.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
Yes, I did want to play.
Speaker 4 (11:07):
I did play tight end in high school, and that's
what I really liked. But I kind of realized one
I didn't want to keep running down the field and
not getting the ball.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
Sometimes.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
That was a lot of running.
Speaker 3 (11:17):
Yeah, but well you're talking to Justin Jefferson lately. Anyway,
I just getting gone. There was a lot of that
last year. I could just tell they get frustrated, you know.
Speaker 4 (11:26):
Yeah, But no, I think probably I do play d
line because of my dad. I remember going to Stanford
on a visit and I'm sitting down in.
Speaker 2 (11:35):
The D line room.
Speaker 4 (11:36):
I look behind me and I see a giant picture
of my dad holding his bicep up with a giant
rose in his ring, I mean, in his mouth from.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
The rose bowl. That's awesome.
Speaker 4 (11:44):
So I think, you know, that's definitely an influence for me.
But my mom's been awesome.
Speaker 2 (11:47):

Speaker 3 (11:48):
So Jackson, you you have three sisters and a brother. Correct, yes, sir,
Where do you fall in the age pecking order?
Speaker 2 (11:54):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (11:54):
So I am the second youngest so Eva, my little
sister is nineteen, and then there's me at twenty one,
and then my older brother, Phoenix is oh, geez, twenty six.
Now oldest sister Cerling is twenty eight. Older sisters certainly,
and then the oldest Chanel is twenty nine.
Speaker 3 (12:11):
I believe your your your brother Phoenix, North Dakota State University, Yes, sir, right,
was he there?
Speaker 1 (12:17):
He was there with those good teams, right? Oh yeah,
So I think like he wants some FCS titles, right, I.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
Think three or four of them?
Speaker 3 (12:22):
Geez yeah, oh yeah, holy ke, Well, you got to
go out and win the big ten just to keep
up with Phoenix.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
We have to, we have to, you know it.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
Okay, So being being the second, second to last, you know,
the the second youngest of that group, having two older
sisters and an older brother, I.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
Mean, it's that.
Speaker 3 (12:41):
That probably plays into you getting as good as you've gotten, right,
because you always had in home targets at which to shoot.
Girls are generally faster than boys at a young age. Yeah,
and then the rubber meets the road when you become
a teenager with strength and speed and everything, and they
have a way of physiologically flipping if you know what

I mean. Yeah, but you with your sisters in Phoenix,
I mean they probably pushed you every step of the way.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
Right, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
I mean honestly, all of them in different ways played
factors for me, especially like especially my older brother when
I was younger and when I was smaller than him.
I mean we'd do all all sorts of funny things,
but like, like what built my toughness is he.
Speaker 2 (13:24):
Would try to like try out.
Speaker 4 (13:25):
WWE moves on me every time we'd see him on
the TV and look at me, and I knew it
was it was time.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
For some squabbles.
Speaker 3 (13:31):
He jump up on the couch and like try to
come from top rope.

Oh, top row on choke slam. All the time he
was man, he.

Doesn't did me dirty a little bit until I finally
started getting bigger than him, and then he.

Was like, all right, I'm cool off of that. Oh

You you played three so, as we mentioned earlier, Jackson
is with the Golden Gophers now had a fantastic season
last year.

Nice d line too. I can't wait to get into that.

But you played three games at Tiger Stadium three years
ago for LSU. Correct, So you started with LSU, which
is football immortality. What what is LSU football like in
Baton Rouge.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
Back in Ben Rouge.
Speaker 4 (14:39):
Honestly, LSU football was I won't say everything because they
have a bunch of amazing sports there, but I mean
it was big down there. You go somewhere and people
are they knew my name and I didn't play a
single snap.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
So I was confused. You didn't you play five games?
Speaker 2 (14:55):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (14:56):
Before Yeah, because I was when I to look at
the game logs, I was hoping we get in Alabama
in there, and I was hoping it was at Baton
Rouge Death Valley and that whole thing. I mean, I
would imagine you saw it like it's unbelievable, isn't it?
Speaker 2 (15:10):
It's unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (15:11):
So I was I had played a certain amount of
games and then I decided I was going to red
shirt because I didn't want to burn my red shirt
just to find out, you know, a couple of weeks
ago that there's a five for five rule. Now, so
I didn't even have to red shirt in my freshman year.
But I mean it, it is what it is. I
got to play some of my freshman year. But yeah,
it's just it's weird because a lot of the guys
(15:33):
will go play like special teams their freshman year for
like four games, and then they'll stop to make sure
that they keep their red shirt for the year.
Speaker 1 (15:39):
But so it's their choice.
Speaker 3 (15:42):
Yeah, and it's got to be so tough to be
a coach in college football this day and age. Absolutely,
then I mean it's over talk but nil and transfer portal.
And I've talked to PJ about this before. PJ joins
the show every Monday during the season, and it's the
it's the recruiting aspect of your own during the year.
(16:02):
So like when I you know, I've learned over the
years through the NFL that distraction is the ultimate equalizer
personal life distractions, professional distractions.
Speaker 1 (16:12):
I'm better than him, why am I not playing?
Speaker 3 (16:14):
But all that kind of stuff, well that that does
that doesn't do anybody any good. So it's like with
what you just said, players making decisions. You know, if
I play anymore, I lose this, Well, that means the
coach is now recruiting them during the season to stay
well or even choose to play.
Speaker 1 (16:31):
It's so top right.
Speaker 4 (16:33):
Yeah, there's so many different factors that go into and
I don't think I don't think a lot of fans
really know what goes into it. I mean, like you said,
sometimes coaches have to make sure that their current players
stay and then when the portal season comes up, they
have to yeah, you know, one getting new guys out
the portal depending on what happens to their current players
or guys that leave. And then they still got to
worry about the high school players. But now, like you know,
(16:53):
there's questions on like different places on whether you know,
it's if it's valuable or not to bring high school
players or not in.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
You know, I think by the way, you're trying to
beat Wisconsin in about four days too, you know what
I mean exactly?
Speaker 4 (17:04):
Yeah, And I mean luckily for us we're a you know,
we're a program that takes freshman guys and just continues
to build him up from brick by bricks. So I'm
not sure necessarily about any of that, but I mean,
it's just crazy the way that college football has adapted
over the years, and we're it's going to continue to go.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
Your uh, your father coached you in high school? What
was that like?
Speaker 3 (17:24):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (17:24):
It was awesome.
Speaker 4 (17:26):
You know for me, he didn't necessarily he wasn't in
my ear all the time because he let my you know,
my my d line coach, coach and Neil kind of
just build me up in ways. But uh, back at home,
you I probably hear a little bit from him though,
But no, it was great.
Speaker 2 (17:42):
He was also a principal at my school and so.
Speaker 1 (17:45):
Oh Diana students right.
Speaker 2 (17:47):
Oh he was.
Speaker 4 (17:47):
He was a dan at first and then he became
like a like a grade level principal. Oh goal, He
was like the tenth and eleventh grade principal at the time.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
And he knows how to watch all twenty two yeah,
which means you can watch it the right way. Oh,
by the way, he can watch the Badgers, Buckeyes, Wolverines
left or right tackles and watch it the right way.
Speaker 4 (18:07):
Well that's terrific, man, It's awesome. Yeah, but I mean
back in high school, man, he would he would call
me up one day to go. So I speak Spanish,
and so he knew that. He put me into Spanish
immersion schools. I went to Park Spanish Immersion and so
if he's gonna put me in Spanish, he might as.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
Well use it.
Speaker 4 (18:23):
So whenever, like whenever our interpreter wasn't at school, he
would call me up from my class out of nowhere.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
And luckily, I mean I had good grades. He called
me up.
Speaker 4 (18:31):
I had to talk to some Spanish speaking students or
some families, and I think that helped me a lot
in my people my people skills, but also just I mean,
it's it's been awesome.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
I had agree.
Speaker 3 (18:41):
What what do you like about your D line? You
and Anthony Smith can play for sure? Carter Ment at
six and a half sacks last season, and you guys
added TJ. Bush junior from cal He had five and
a half sacks for them last year.
Speaker 1 (18:54):
I mean, you know, I'm not.
Speaker 3 (18:56):
This seems like either the strength or one of these
strength of your team, right, Yeah?
Speaker 2 (19:01):
No, I I totally agree.
Speaker 4 (19:03):
And I think the cool thing about our defensive line
this year is that we have everybody in our D
line to be competitors this year. So no matter who's
all gonna be our first four on the D line,
there're gonna.
Speaker 2 (19:13):
Be some dogs and are gonna handle business.
Speaker 4 (19:14):
And that's that's something that I really think we pride
ourselves on. And so we come to when we come
to workouts every day, we know what time it is,
and yeah, man, no matter who those first four is,
we're we're gonna have some dogs out there on the
field every play.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
So are you a D N and edge or a three.
Speaker 2 (19:29):
Technique d N and edge?
Speaker 1 (19:31):
Okay?
Speaker 3 (19:31):
Yes, So like who's your three technique because obviously that's
so very important.
Speaker 4 (19:35):
Yeah, So, I mean we have a bunch of three
techniques such as like Jalen Hicks, the Kwan crowder Riley
sunram Uh, Theo Randall.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
That's just some of the names.
Speaker 4 (19:44):
But the cool thing about our defensive line is just
because you know you're it says one position on you
know the website, that doesn't mean that's your position, right,
And they'll move you anywhere they can because I mean,
we teach our guys versatility. Our noses don't just know
how to play nose. They can play three Tech. That
could play Edge.
Speaker 2 (20:01):
He could even play.
Speaker 4 (20:01):
Rush if you know, we had to. But yeah, I
think that's just cool. And we build so much of
our guys as far as like so much knowledge of
the game, Like everybody knows how to go flat drop,
no matter if they're you know, three hundred and twenty
pounders or two hundred twenty pounders.
Speaker 2 (20:16):
So it's been awesome.
Speaker 1 (20:18):
How did you handle it when Koy Perage transferred?
Speaker 4 (20:21):
Well, I think, you know, Koy had to make a
decision for himself, and I think every man at some
point is going to have to do that, and so realistically,
you know, I could have my own personal feelings against that,
but well, one I don't.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
I love Koy. He's an amazing dude.
Speaker 4 (20:36):
We're going to continue to be friends for you know,
hopefully forever. But sometimes like stuff like that happens, especially
now in the days of the transfer portal, and you know,
when one guy leaves, we're gonna have somebody else step up,
no matter what situation it is. And so I think
Koy is gonna have an amazing future with Oregon. And
then you know he's gonna have an amazing future in
the NFL. But I think our our, our second, our
(20:57):
secondary this year is going to be some dogs. Yeah,
some dogs, some ball hunters. We're gonna get some picks
this year.
Speaker 3 (21:03):
With ors pass rush for sure. Okay, so yeah, I
see where you're going here with this. All right, A
couple of Quicki's to close here for Jackson Howard, defensive
lineman for the Golden Gophers football team. It's clear you
need the right quarterback to win at a high level.
And Drake Lindsey and my estimation has a chance a
nice arms drength, good arm talent. He's going to be
(21:24):
at this camp. By the way, what do you what
do you like about Drake? And what can you tell
is already better than it was last year?
Speaker 2 (21:32):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (21:32):
So I mean for me, I play, I played defense,
so I don't necessarily see the offense as much I
got you, but I noticed things, especially things in practice.
And I think one of Drake's biggest strong suits is
his processing speed. And you know when it comes to
his like the way that he processes things in a play,
because an average play only goes from about three to
four seconds honestly, and I think he processes things so
(21:56):
well and it can get irritating as a defensive lineman too,
especially And you like, if I go and win a
pass rush move with a little double swipe and the
balls already out.
Speaker 2 (22:05):
Yeah, it's a deep ball.
Speaker 4 (22:06):
Like that that gets guys angry and it just it
continues to compile and compile. And I think that's something
that Drake does really well. And you know, people can
say what they want about Drake, but he's also got
some legs too.
Speaker 2 (22:16):
He can run, y'all go and see some of that too. Drake.
Speaker 4 (22:19):
Drake is an all around guy. He can do everything.
We are so lucky to have him.
Speaker 2 (22:23):
Honestly.

How much how much from what you know now, how
much does coach Fleck like to win time of possession?
I mean seriously, and when the offense plays keep away
that really helps your defense a lot, right, I mean
if there are times that I'm like, he'd run it
every time if he could. He loves to kill that
time of possession. And and you know what, maybe maybe

there have been some players on offense where it's like, hey,
I have to construct the game this way to have
a chance to win. Maybe that's not the case now. However,
it's age old. When you dominate the time of possession
like he likes to, right, it keeps people like you fresh,
which means in the fourth quarter, holy cow, right.

And I think that's something that we we really helped
us out last year was just like like a ten
minute drive on the offense that that like that hurts
the opposing team's defense. They can't be out there that long.
They're tired, lethargic, and that's what that's a goal of
the offense. And so for us, like the defensive job
is to get the ball back to the offense and
the offensive job is to score.

That's that's exactly what it is.

And so I think it's cool the way that coach
Fleck harps on situational football and making sure that everybody
knows the exact situation, whether it's first, second, third, or
fourth quarter, the middle eight, T two, T four situation,
all that stuff. We talk about it all the time
and uh in our team meetings, our position meetings, unit meetings,
because it prepares us for situations in the season where it's,
(23:50):
you know, you have two minutes left in the in
the half, what are you going to do offensively, defensively
all that stuff. And so when it comes down to it,
and we when we get what we want as far
as getting the ball to the offense and we're running
four yards per play, getting first downs all the time,
it keeps the defense sharp and I mean it just
it gives us the advantage.

And so that's something that.

We really want to see this this upcoming season is
just you know, keeping the ball to the offense. And luckily,
you know, I would hope that our defense doesn't play
that much.

So for me, you know, growing up, my dad always
wanted to include me in different sports events, whether it's football, soccer, baseball,
and for me, I think that gave me a little
bit of competitive advantage, but also just being able to
get around other kids. And being in a team environment
I think really helped cultivate me as a kid. And
so I think the big goal with this camp is

just you know, getting these kids around other kids and
athletic events, getting them outside and just getting them around,
you know, good experiences when it comes to athletics. I
think just no matter what they want to do in
their future, you're having that you know, those experiences to
build upon is going to be really good for them.

Okay, so when you when when when you think about
inclusion and you go like first grade up to eight,
so before they get into high school, why did you
decide on on that group?
Speaker 2 (02:16):
You know?
Speaker 4 (02:17):
I really think it's just because, you know, no matter
what stage they are in their lives, I think just
being able to come out there and then it's going
to be a free camp as well. I don't want
it to be something where people have to get some
money out of their pockets to do it. All you
got to do. You don't even have to have cleats
for all for all we cares. It's all about having fun.
And I think no matter where they are in their

in their football life, whether their eighth grader is getting
ready to go to high school, and there they already
know the drills, and that their first graders not even
know how to get the right foot over the left.

It's all about just having fun and taking the kids
where they are and helping to give them a little
bit of something and some knowledge on where they want
to be in the future.

We'll get into some football here momentarily. When I was
when I was preparing this yesterday, I saw you on
Fox nine, So I watched a clip of you on
Fox nine, I believe with Pierre, Yes, sir, it was
relatively it was recent, maybe even last week or whatever.
(04:08):
What you're doing here with this camp at your alma mater,
Robins Zale Cooper you called an outreach or you mentioned
either you called it an outreach or you want to
start like outreaches stuff like that. Did I get that right?
What do you mean?
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Absolutely? So?
Speaker 4 (04:23):
What I meant by that is, I think a big
thing that we don't get nowadays is being able to
come together as a community. And I think that technology
has been kind of spreading these kids apart, and I
think being able to come outside, whether it's just two
hours in your day, and being able to just get
around other kids and having some older adults, We're gonna
have guys like Anthony Smith, Drake Lindsay who these kids
(04:43):
are able to look up to, not just you know,
on the TV when they see the Gophers play, but
now being able to come out to my high school
and be able to see these guys talk talk to
them a little bit, ask them about things, because I
mean when I asked these guys if they wanted to come.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
It wasn't like, you know, am I getting paid for this?
Is like what time to have to be there? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (05:00):
And I think, you know, that's what we pride ourselves on,
is the type of guys that we have on our team,
and that they're more so asking about what's time I
got to be there instead of how much I'm getting paid?
And that's I think that's just what type of character
we have on our team.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Okay, so Jackson, let's hit on middle schoolers for a second,
because in having two kids, you know, ones now twenty
five to the others twenty three, I found at that
stage of their lives that middle school from elementary to
high school that transition area right there was the trickiest
(05:34):
and I've had other parents talk to me about that too,
just with the way people grow and things that are
available technologically and so on at that age before you
get to high school. So I'm a focus on middle
schoolers here, what year round plan would you recommend for say,
middle schoolers that involve sports and community?
Speaker 1 (05:56):
So here we are in summer.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
So if you got somebody going from seventh or six
to seventh, seven to eight, something like that, and they're
either going back to middle school or going into middle school,
and it's the summer, and sometimes there ain't a lot
to do unless a parents initiate it or b kids
are interested in it. So like for middle schoolers with
sports and that community that supports sports, like, what would
(06:22):
you recommend?
Speaker 4 (06:23):
Well, I think, you know, the first thing I would
probably say is I mean, even though I'm you know,
twenty one, I still have a little a little bit
of knowledge of it. But I would say the first
thing I would say is sports diversity for those kids,
so not just being able to just specialize in just football,
but also getting to mix in some baseball, some soccer, hockey,
I mean hockey.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Definitely for Minnesota kids.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
But did you play? I played a little bit.
Speaker 4 (06:44):
Maybe my second and third year when I lived in
Saint Louis Park, But then after that I was kind
of like, I gotta go hit somebody every place.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
So yeah, I went to football after that. But that
was a big thing for me.
Speaker 4 (06:54):
Just I played baseball in high school and I also
threw track, and I think the big thing about sports
in middle school is that everything can translate over and
I think a bunch of the skills that I learned
from different sports ended up translating over to football, So
it helped me a lot. But then when it comes
to the community standpoint, I think, no matter what you do,
just finding something small, every little once in.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
A while to give back to somebody.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
I was talking to my girlfriend the other day, it's
just about like sometimes when I see people on the street,
just give them some some sort of words of positivity
and because realistically, you never know what things that you
can say that can impact somebody's day or their life
because everybody's going through different stuff.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
Man, don't don't Jackson, don't you think I mean you
God gifted you in a way where you know, physically speaking,
your desire to work. Your father played in the NFL,
was a stud at Stanford. And I know Jackson's father, Willie,
He played for the Vikings the year before I started
calling games. But but I got to know Willy over
the years, and and you know, I would imagine him
(07:55):
and your mom and your siblings have had, you know,
a lot to do with where you are now. Not
every but has that. Not everybody has a mom and
a dad in a household. Not everybody has people pushing
them like I would imagine they pushed you. So tell
me what you think of this, Like if you have
parents or people listening now who are like, I love sports,
(08:16):
My kids love sports. I want them in it. They
want to be in it. But you know what, they're
just not very good. They just haven't. You know, they
weren't blessed or gifted physically the way Jackson or some
others are. But don't stop still try right because not
only does it give you a chance to push through
barriers and make a team and be part of that
sports community year round, but there are other jobs that
(08:41):
come out of sports. By being part of teams, team managers,
you might get bit, you know, wanting to become a
certified athletic trainer, a team a team therapist, so to speak,
stuff like player development, stuff like that. There are so
many things tentacles other than just being the star athlete, right.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
Yeah, So I think, you know, for me, what I
saw at home is what I started to become. And
so when my dad showed me, you know, like we
started off just giving out free meals to families when
we were I think maybe I was in fifth grade
and my dad told me the reasoning behind that was
because we were able to And so you know, I
think now with the with the platform that I have
(09:24):
now and the things I've been able to do athletically now,
I think it'd be a disservice to my community to
not do something to give back. And so I think
when it comes to sports and parents, I think, like
I have early memories of my dad just throwing the
football around with me playing baseball, him trying to teach
me how to pitch, and then him getting mad at
me when I would throw it really hard at him.
(09:45):
Like right, I think it just it all comes down
to at home, and even though you know, some people
might not have a father at home, having a father
figure is you know, just as good. Honestly, I think
luckily for me, I had a dad at home. You know,
not everybody can say that, but making sure that you
have somebody you can look up to in life and
knowing that there's somebody out there that you can look
up to for these kids, and I think it's really
(10:06):
huge and so I mean, honestly, I think that was
a big part of my development. And just you know,
luckily my dad played in the league, But just because
he played doesn't mean I had to play as well.
I think it's just because of the the good experiences
I had around sports that led up to me really
wanted to get to my future goals.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
So so with your mother and father, how important have
they been in helping you play football in the Big
ten after, you know, starting with a cool.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
SEC school like LSU.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
I think they've been awesome.
Speaker 4 (10:40):
Sometimes one parent's got to be the nicer and the
other one's got to be a little stricter parent, and
they switch off roles sometimes, But my dad's usually the
one that's always like he he talks to me every
day after the games. He takes notes on his phone
before my coaches can even get to me about like,
you know, my miss assignment's mistackle.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
Stuff like that, because I think it's it's really because.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
He cares and d lineman because your dad was.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
Yes, I did want to play.
Speaker 4 (11:07):
I did play tight end in high school, and that's
what I really liked. But I kind of realized one
I didn't want to keep running down the field and
not getting the ball.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
Sometimes.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
That was a lot of running.
Speaker 3 (11:17):
Yeah, but well you're talking to Justin Jefferson lately. Anyway,
I just getting gone. There was a lot of that
last year. I could just tell they get frustrated, you know.
Speaker 4 (11:26):
Yeah, But no, I think probably I do play d
line because of my dad. I remember going to Stanford
on a visit and I'm sitting down in.
Speaker 2 (11:35):
The D line room.
Speaker 4 (11:36):
I look behind me and I see a giant picture
of my dad holding his bicep up with a giant
rose in his ring, I mean, in his mouth from.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
The rose bowl. That's awesome.
Speaker 4 (11:44):
So I think, you know, that's definitely an influence for me.
But my mom's been awesome.
Speaker 2 (11:47):

So Jackson, you you have three sisters and a brother. Correct, yes, sir,
Where do you fall in the age pecking order?

Oh?

So I am the second youngest so Eva, my little
sister is nineteen, and then there's me at twenty one,
and then my older brother, Phoenix is oh, geez, twenty six.
Now oldest sister Cerling is twenty eight. Older sisters certainly,
and then the oldest Chanel is twenty nine.

I believe your your your brother Phoenix, North Dakota State University, Yes, sir, right,
was he there?
Speaker 1 (12:17):
He was there with those good teams, right? Oh yeah,
So I think like he wants some FCS titles, right, I.

Think three or four of them?

Geez yeah, oh yeah, holy ke, Well, you got to
go out and win the big ten just to keep
up with Phoenix.

We have to, we have to, you know it.

Okay, So being being the second, second to last, you know,
the the second youngest of that group, having two older
sisters and an older brother, I.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
Mean, it's that.

That probably plays into you getting as good as you've gotten, right,
because you always had in home targets at which to shoot.
Girls are generally faster than boys at a young age. Yeah,
and then the rubber meets the road when you become
a teenager with strength and speed and everything, and they
have a way of physiologically flipping if you know what

I mean. Yeah, but you with your sisters in Phoenix,
I mean they probably pushed you every step of the way.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
Right, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
I mean honestly, all of them in different ways played
factors for me, especially like especially my older brother when
I was younger and when I was smaller than him.
I mean we'd do all all sorts of funny things,
but like, like what built my toughness is he.
Speaker 2 (13:24):
Would try to like try out.
Speaker 4 (13:25):
WWE moves on me every time we'd see him on
the TV and look at me, and I knew it
was it was time.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
For some squabbles.
Speaker 3 (13:31):
He jump up on the couch and like try to
come from top rope.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
Oh, top row on choke slam. All the time he
was man, he.
Speaker 4 (13:40):
Doesn't did me dirty a little bit until I finally
started getting bigger than him, and then he.

Was like, all right, I'm cool off of that. Oh

You you played three so, as we mentioned earlier, Jackson
is with the Golden Gophers now had a fantastic season
last year.

But you played three games at Tiger Stadium three years
ago for LSU. Correct, So you started with LSU, which
is football immortality. What what is LSU football like in
Baton Rouge.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
Back in Ben Rouge.
Speaker 4 (14:39):
Honestly, LSU football was I won't say everything because they
have a bunch of amazing sports there, but I mean
it was big down there. You go somewhere and people
are they knew my name and I didn't play a
single snap.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
So I was confused. You didn't you play five games?
Speaker 2 (14:55):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (14:56):
Before Yeah, because I was when I to look at
the game logs, I was hoping we get in Alabama
in there, and I was hoping it was at Baton
Rouge Death Valley and that whole thing. I mean, I
would imagine you saw it like it's unbelievable, isn't it?
Speaker 2 (15:10):
It's unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (15:11):
So I was I had played a certain amount of
games and then I decided I was going to red
shirt because I didn't want to burn my red shirt
just to find out, you know, a couple of weeks
ago that there's a five for five rule. Now, so
I didn't even have to red shirt in my freshman year.
But I mean it, it is what it is. I
got to play some of my freshman year. But yeah,
it's just it's weird because a lot of the guys
(15:33):
will go play like special teams their freshman year for
like four games, and then they'll stop to make sure
that they keep their red shirt for the year.
Speaker 1 (15:39):
But so it's their choice.
Speaker 3 (15:42):
Yeah, and it's got to be so tough to be
a coach in college football this day and age. Absolutely,
then I mean it's over talk but nil and transfer portal.
And I've talked to PJ about this before. PJ joins
the show every Monday during the season, and it's the
it's the recruiting aspect of your own during the year.
(16:02):
So like when I you know, I've learned over the
years through the NFL that distraction is the ultimate equalizer
personal life distractions, professional distractions.
Speaker 1 (16:12):
I'm better than him, why am I not playing?
Speaker 3 (16:14):
But all that kind of stuff, well that that does
that doesn't do anybody any good. So it's like with
what you just said, players making decisions. You know, if
I play anymore, I lose this, Well, that means the
coach is now recruiting them during the season to stay
well or even choose to play.
Speaker 1 (16:31):
It's so top right.
Speaker 4 (16:33):
Yeah, there's so many different factors that go into and
I don't think I don't think a lot of fans
really know what goes into it. I mean, like you said,
sometimes coaches have to make sure that their current players
stay and then when the portal season comes up, they
have to yeah, you know, one getting new guys out
the portal depending on what happens to their current players
or guys that leave. And then they still got to
worry about the high school players. But now, like you know,
(16:53):
there's questions on like different places on whether you know,
it's if it's valuable or not to bring high school
players or not in.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
You know, I think by the way, you're trying to
beat Wisconsin in about four days too, you know what
I mean exactly?
Speaker 4 (17:04):
Yeah, And I mean luckily for us we're a you know,
we're a program that takes freshman guys and just continues
to build him up from brick by bricks. So I'm
not sure necessarily about any of that, but I mean,
it's just crazy the way that college football has adapted
over the years, and we're it's going to continue to go.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
Your uh, your father coached you in high school? What
was that like?
Speaker 3 (17:24):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (17:24):
It was awesome.
Speaker 4 (17:26):
You know for me, he didn't necessarily he wasn't in
my ear all the time because he let my you know,
my my d line coach, coach and Neil kind of
just build me up in ways. But uh, back at home,
you I probably hear a little bit from him though,
But no, it was great.
Speaker 2 (17:42):
He was also a principal at my school and so.
Speaker 1 (17:45):
Oh Diana students right.
Speaker 2 (17:47):
Oh he was.
Speaker 4 (17:47):
He was a dan at first and then he became
like a like a grade level principal. Oh goal, He
was like the tenth and eleventh grade principal at the time.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
And he knows how to watch all twenty two yeah,
which means you can watch it the right way. Oh,
by the way, he can watch the Badgers, Buckeyes, Wolverines
left or right tackles and watch it the right way.
Speaker 4 (18:07):
Well that's terrific, man, It's awesome. Yeah, but I mean
back in high school, man, he would he would call
me up one day to go. So I speak Spanish,
and so he knew that. He put me into Spanish
immersion schools. I went to Park Spanish Immersion and so
if he's gonna put me in Spanish, he might as.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
Well use it.
Speaker 4 (18:23):
So whenever, like whenever our interpreter wasn't at school, he
would call me up from my class out of nowhere.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
And luckily, I mean I had good grades. He called
me up.
Speaker 4 (18:31):
I had to talk to some Spanish speaking students or
some families, and I think that helped me a lot
in my people my people skills, but also just I mean,
it's it's been awesome.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
I had agree.
Speaker 3 (18:41):
What what do you like about your D line? You
and Anthony Smith can play for sure? Carter Ment at
six and a half sacks last season, and you guys
added TJ. Bush junior from cal He had five and
a half sacks for them last year.
Speaker 1 (18:54):
I mean, you know, I'm not.
Speaker 3 (18:56):
This seems like either the strength or one of these
strength of your team, right, Yeah?
Speaker 2 (19:01):
No, I I totally agree.
Speaker 4 (19:03):
And I think the cool thing about our defensive line
this year is that we have everybody in our D
line to be competitors this year. So no matter who's
all gonna be our first four on the D line,
there're gonna.
Speaker 2 (19:13):
Be some dogs and are gonna handle business.
Speaker 4 (19:14):
And that's that's something that I really think we pride
ourselves on. And so we come to when we come
to workouts every day, we know what time it is,
and yeah, man, no matter who those first four is,
we're we're gonna have some dogs out there on the
field every play.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
So are you a D N and edge or a three.
Speaker 2 (19:29):
Technique d N and edge?
Speaker 1 (19:31):
Okay?
Speaker 3 (19:31):
Yes, So like who's your three technique because obviously that's
so very important.
Speaker 4 (19:35):
Yeah, So, I mean we have a bunch of three
techniques such as like Jalen Hicks, the Kwan crowder Riley
sunram Uh, Theo Randall.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
That's just some of the names.
Speaker 4 (19:44):
But the cool thing about our defensive line is just
because you know you're it says one position on you
know the website, that doesn't mean that's your position, right,
And they'll move you anywhere they can because I mean,
we teach our guys versatility. Our noses don't just know
how to play nose. They can play three Tech. That
could play Edge.
Speaker 2 (20:01):
He could even play.
Speaker 4 (20:01):
Rush if you know, we had to. But yeah, I
think that's just cool. And we build so much of
our guys as far as like so much knowledge of
the game, Like everybody knows how to go flat drop,
no matter if they're you know, three hundred and twenty
pounders or two hundred twenty pounders.
Speaker 2 (20:16):
So it's been awesome.
Speaker 1 (20:18):
How did you handle it when Koy Perage transferred?
Speaker 4 (20:21):
Well, I think, you know, Koy had to make a
decision for himself, and I think every man at some
point is going to have to do that, and so realistically,
you know, I could have my own personal feelings against that,
but well, one I don't.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
I love Koy. He's an amazing dude.
Speaker 4 (20:36):
We're going to continue to be friends for you know,
hopefully forever. But sometimes like stuff like that happens, especially
now in the days of the transfer portal, and you know,
when one guy leaves, we're gonna have somebody else step up,
no matter what situation it is. And so I think
Koy is gonna have an amazing future with Oregon. And
then you know he's gonna have an amazing future in
the NFL. But I think our our, our second, our
(20:57):
secondary this year is going to be some dogs. Yeah,
some dogs, some ball hunters. We're gonna get some picks
this year.
Speaker 3 (21:03):
With ors pass rush for sure. Okay, so yeah, I
see where you're going here with this. All right, A
couple of Quicki's to close here for Jackson Howard, defensive
lineman for the Golden Gophers football team. It's clear you
need the right quarterback to win at a high level.
And Drake Lindsey and my estimation has a chance a
nice arms drength, good arm talent. He's going to be
(21:24):
at this camp. By the way, what do you what
do you like about Drake? And what can you tell
is already better than it was last year?
Speaker 2 (21:32):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (21:32):
So I mean for me, I play, I played defense,
so I don't necessarily see the offense as much I
got you, but I noticed things, especially things in practice.
And I think one of Drake's biggest strong suits is
his processing speed. And you know when it comes to
his like the way that he processes things in a play,
because an average play only goes from about three to
four seconds honestly, and I think he processes things so
(21:56):
well and it can get irritating as a defensive lineman too,
especially And you like, if I go and win a
pass rush move with a little double swipe and the
balls already out.
Speaker 2 (22:05):
Yeah, it's a deep ball.
Speaker 4 (22:06):
Like that that gets guys angry and it just it
continues to compile and compile. And I think that's something
that Drake does really well. And you know, people can
say what they want about Drake, but he's also got
some legs too.
Speaker 2 (22:16):
He can run, y'all go and see some of that too. Drake.
Speaker 4 (22:19):
Drake is an all around guy. He can do everything.
We are so lucky to have him.
Speaker 2 (22:23):
Honestly.
Speaker 3 (22:24):
How much how much from what you know now, how
much does coach Fleck like to win time of possession?
I mean seriously, and when the offense plays keep away
that really helps your defense a lot, right, I mean
if there are times that I'm like, he'd run it
every time if he could. He loves to kill that
time of possession. And and you know what, maybe maybe
(22:46):
there have been some players on offense where it's like, hey,
I have to construct the game this way to have
a chance to win. Maybe that's not the case now. However,
it's age old. When you dominate the time of possession
like he likes to, right, it keeps people like you fresh,
which means in the fourth quarter, holy cow, right.
Speaker 2 (23:05):
Yeah, no, it's it's been awesome.
Speaker 4 (23:06):
And I think that's something that we we really helped
us out last year was just like like a ten
minute drive on the offense that that like that hurts
the opposing team's defense. They can't be out there that long.
They're tired, lethargic, and that's what that's a goal of
the offense. And so for us, like the defensive job
is to get the ball back to the offense and
the offensive job is to score.
Speaker 2 (23:27):
That's that's exactly what it is.
Speaker 4 (23:28):
And so I think it's cool the way that coach
Fleck harps on situational football and making sure that everybody
knows the exact situation, whether it's first, second, third, or
fourth quarter, the middle eight, T two, T four situation,
all that stuff. We talk about it all the time
and uh in our team meetings, our position meetings, unit meetings,
because it prepares us for situations in the season where it's,
(23:50):
you know, you have two minutes left in the in
the half, what are you going to do offensively, defensively
all that stuff. And so when it comes down to it,
and we when we get what we want as far
as getting the ball to the offense and we're running
four yards per play, getting first downs all the time,
it keeps the defense sharp and I mean it just
it gives us the advantage.
Speaker 2 (24:09):
And so that's something that.
Speaker 4 (24:11):
We really want to see this this upcoming season is
just you know, keeping the ball to the offense. And luckily,
you know, I would hope that our defense doesn't play
that much.
Speaker 2 (24:19):
That's the goal.

I mean the goalkeeper knew exactly where he was going
with the penalty kicks. And I said to you, I'm like,
that has to be a problem. If he knows exactly
where you're going. He's the best player to ever play.

But there is a base there, there is a tell,
and usually you can find it and it's quick, and
these goalkeepers are world class. But Messi on some of
his pks, has this unbelievable lean and in combination with
his plant foul, effectively makes it impossible for him to
go left.

So it's almost so you.

Can and it happens once in a while, it's not
every time, but you can see when he has this
massive lean and his plant foot comes in hard right,
it is incredibly difficult for him to do anything but
kick it to the right. And the Egyptian keeper saw that.
