Dog Days

My father never let us get a dog. We'd beg
and we'd plead and ask why. He'd tell us that
losing his as a kid was a painty wood and wish,
and then all over again we would try. The first
thing we did when Mom threw him out was get one.
We were going to house him or house her. When
Mom and me hit the local pet shop and both

fell in love with a schnauzer. I named him. I
loved him, but he wasn't man's best friend. He loved
all the ladies on his list. I was at the inn.
If everyone went away, no one else being home for
the longest while, I'd hear him just roam. Then he
must have concluded everyone was dead, and he'd apprehensively hop

up onto my bed. His name was Cruiser, loud as
can be. I could still remember that call from his
vet late on a Sunday night. The first thing I
thought when I hung up that phone was damn. My
father was right.
