Meridian, Contact, Genesis and Mercury made a combined 2.7 billion in operating profits in the past year - the largest single-year profit ever..

Consumer NZ estimates during that time, 40 thousand households couldn't afford power.

Chief Executive Jon Duffy says making profits is a normal part of business - but consumers also need to be benefit.
