Speaker 1 (00:00):
Crass Smith back there producing five six six nine zeros.
The text line appreciate the hall of fame of the
Hoff Steve Attwater sitting in.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
For an hour with us there, just talking about that.
The big news of the.
Speaker 1 (00:09):
Day, of course, uh, the Never Nuggets trading away Michael
Porter Junior and a twenty thirty two unprotected first round
draft pick for Cam Johnson.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
And then uh getting Bruce Brown cowboy Bruce Brack on
the vet minimum deal.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
We'll talk a little bit about that, go out to
the KA comps, but the hot line and bringing our
guy Nick Cosmider.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Nick, how you doing, buddy?
Speaker 3 (00:30):
I'm doing great. How are you doing? Man?
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Doing pretty good?
Speaker 1 (00:33):
Big day for the Nuggets, the long probably expected move
on from Michael Porter Junior, they get Cam Johnson back.
You know, I see a little bit of reaction of
kind of a they traded this for that, you know
sort of thing, sort of meaning they got they gave out.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
But I don't think that's the case. I mean, Michael
Porter Junior more.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
Of a catch and shoot, you know, spot up guy
who gives you a little rebounding, doesn't play much defense.
Cam Johnson is a is a movement shooter. Who doesn't
rebound as well but does play defense. What do you
think of the Nuggets.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
Trade, Well, I think when you add it in totality
with getting Bruce Brown, I think some of what they
really wanted to do is get a little bit more
creation off the dribble overall. Now you know Bruce Brown,
he's kind of if you think of him as sort
of the replacement for Russell Westbrook as sort of that
(01:24):
you know, secondary ball handler with the second unit or whatever.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
The case might be.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
He does that a little bit more fluidly, and certainly
at this stage in's career, I think, you know, can
finish a little bit bit better than what you got
from Russell Westbrook. And to your point with Cam Johnson,
it's the same thing. He's a guy that can create
a little bit more and yeah, move off the ball
a little bit.
Speaker 5 (01:45):
And look, these guys.
Speaker 4 (01:46):
Were both really good three point shooters. I think I
think that's that's what you're getting. You're getting forty percent
three point shooters that similar. I think the key that
you also touched on Ben was was just the defensive
acumen that Cam Johnson's going to bring to the table.
Like it's hard to defend you know, good wing ball
creators in in the NBA, and that just certainly wasn't
Michael Jordan, Mike Michael Jordan.
Speaker 5 (02:07):
Michael Porters strong student in part.
Speaker 4 (02:09):
Because he's six foot ten and not the most mobile guy,
even probably before he had, you know, some of the
injuries that he's dealt with. And so with Cam Johnson
a couple of inches shorter, just a little bit, I think,
more versatile defensively out on the perimeter, and I think
that will allow them to play different matchups. So to me,
that's the key you're getting. You're you're losing a little
(02:29):
bit of rebounding just because you know, again Porter six
foot ten, you give a little bit of that up.
But I think the return of what you're getting of
some of that more solid wing defending in addition to,
like I said, the ball creating around Jokic. I think
that's why they see an upgrade. And then of course,
you know, you're you're getting Cam Johnson at a cost
that allows you to to maybe be a little bit
more flexible going forward in this offseason than they otherwise
(02:52):
would have been.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
Yeah, and I think that there's I mean, there's more
to it than that. I understand that, you know, this
isn't like the NFL salary yet the NBA. You need
like a PhD to be able to understand that the
kaponomics portion of it. But from what I understand, the
Nuggets say forty million dollars they get under the luxury
tax they open up fourteen point one million mid level.
They got a sixteen point eight million trade exception you get.
I think you're you get a what is it your
(03:16):
first aprons be your twelve point four million under the
first apron space, uh, and you got a non taxpayer
mid level fourteen point one. I mean that's to me,
it says a lot that they did a lot financially
to give themselves the flexibility to maybe go out and
make another move.
Speaker 5 (03:31):
Yeah, that's exactly right.
Speaker 4 (03:33):
They have the opportunity now to do something else, to
deepen the bench a little bit more than they were
able to do previous off seasons when you're just you know,
like picking up Dario Sarich or whatever the case might be.
They have more flexibility now for some of the reasons
that that you laid out and and then again fit
like with Bruce Brown. It's a guy that I think
(03:55):
when you when we all covered and watched that playoff run.
You know, he averaged twelve points game during the playoff.
During those twenty games in the playoffs, you know, he
shot thirty five percent. There was nothing about his numbers
that necessarily blew you away, but he just had the
ability to spark these runs for that second unit that
they really haven't had in a meaningful way since. And
so look, he's not been the same player necessarily the
(04:18):
last two years since leaving Denver, but like a lot
of guys aren't when they're not playing with Nikola Jokic,
I think he was just always one of those perfect NICOLEA.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
Jokic players.
Speaker 4 (04:28):
And obviously he's going to be bought in and excited
to be back here. So I'm really kind of excited
to see it where he can pick up, you know,
from where he left off.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
With Nick cosmider Nick.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
As we look at this rosters the sense right now,
I think they've got what twelve rostered out of the
fifteen that they're allotted.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
What else do the Nuggets need at this point?
Speaker 1 (04:46):
I look at this thing and I say, Okay, maybe
one more three and D guy, you know for the bench,
and maybe another guy who can who could be a
ball hand. Unless you just believe in Jalen Ticket, what
do you think that this team needs.
Speaker 4 (04:57):
Yeah, I wouldn't mind finding another like another guy that
could come off the bench, veteran player who can just
kind of help them defend, you know, some of the
waves that teams like the Thunder send at you, you know, with.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
Some of their youth offensively.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
I think that would be another thing, is if they
could find somebody who just give them a little bit
more toughness and physicality, you know, on the perimeter. Again,
I like what they did with Cam Johnson for the
for the reason that I think their starters will be
a little bit of a defensive better defensive group.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
Now he can cover up for some things.
Speaker 4 (05:32):
But if you can find another guy on the bench,
I think that would be one thing that.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
I that I looked for.
Speaker 5 (05:36):
We'll see, like obviously this is you know, David.
Speaker 4 (05:39):
Adelman is going to have his kind of renewed look
at guys like Jalen Pickett and and sort of Peyton
Watson and try to make his own impressions of Okay,
how are we.
Speaker 5 (05:49):
Going to use these guys?
Speaker 4 (05:49):
What's the formula that we want to create with this
second unit, and part of that I think is definitely
going to be eyeing possible veteran addition on the perimeter.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Talking to Nick Cosmider of the Athletic, what have you
thought of some of the other moves that have been
made out there so far NBA wide? I mean Lebron
opting out, I don't think that's a surprise to anybody,
although he could still go back.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
There is there many any other shockers out there for
you so far?
Speaker 1 (06:15):
I think the for me the Wolves re signing uh
what's his face to the did the deal is signed
him to that? That one looked a little odd to me.
But beyond that, I don't think there' anything that's been
stunning so far.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
No, it really, it really hasn't, you know.
Speaker 5 (06:29):
Again you look at it now, I think I think.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
The Nuggets in terms of like contenders you know that
you're looking at, have.
Speaker 5 (06:36):
Been sort of the most active so far.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
Obviously if you're the Lakers and just sort of figuring out,
you know, okay, Lebron's back. I don't think anybody thought
he was actually retiring this offseason or anything like that.
You know, we know what they're going to try to
be for this year. But but really a lot of
it is you look, you look at a team like
the Thunder they just re signed, you know, Jaylen Williams,
the bench, Jalen Williams to a three year, two four
(07:00):
million dollar contract. They've turned around and done what we
kind of expected them to do, which is reassemble that group.
The Nuggets had to take a different approach. They you know, again,
when you're when you're the team in chase mode and
you've tried a couple of years with the same formula
that to try to replicate what you did when you
won the title, and it's not working, you know, this
was clearly a different direction.
Speaker 6 (07:20):
That they need to take.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
And the fact that they had something like this lined
up right as free agency starts really makes you know
that you know Ben Tender and you know John Wallace,
the new front office edition there. You know, I think
they've been planning for this group to be leading this
thing quite a while, even if they weren't officially in
place until just before the draft, Because these are the
kind of decisions that you make that takes some time
(07:42):
and some some real intentionality, and I think that's what
they did here.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
Win the Cosmidor from the Athletic.
Speaker 6 (07:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
I mean both those moves were expected, at least from me.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
I don't know how the rest of the people. Both
of the moves made today were expected. But at the
same time, I see a lot of people posted up
to meet you know, the shack. I wasn't familiar with
your game meme to for Tenser and and Wallace. I
think that's a I think that's a good start for this.
You know, new blood as it were, new Blood, but
old Blood. Uh, the way that they're doing things there,
I wanted to switch gears a little bit here.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
We have some some NFL movement today.
Speaker 4 (08:13):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
The biggest story this morning the Steelers and Miami Dolphins
uh making the trade Jonah Smith. Arthur Smith gets his
pinky back as well as Jalen Ramsey.
Speaker 4 (08:21):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
And then you look, uh micka Fitzpatrick goes back to Miami,
which you know, I wonder how thrilled he is about
that trade is interesting on several levels.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
I mean you look at the corners, the outside that
the corners that the uh, the Steelers that play with me.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
You got Darius Slave who's thirty four, y at Jalen
Ramsey who was thirty. I mean, you know, it's it's
almost like a Senior Citizens home for corners in Pittsburgh
right now.
Speaker 4 (08:40):
Yeah, And and like in you're in You're you're having
some guys where you're just saying, like, you know, out
their best you you know what you're getting, and you
obviously hope that getting them into that dealers culture with
Mike Tomlin, that that that can kind of get everybody
on the same on the same page, pulling on the
same rope and all those kind of things, and Jalen
Ramsey again that that could be a really good fit
(09:02):
for what they're trying to do.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
But again, it's just been kind of.
Speaker 4 (09:05):
Hit and miss in terms of not just his availability,
but really kind of the you know, how locked in
you know is the on a week to week basis.
I think there was some inconsistency that you started to
see a little bit in his game.
Speaker 5 (09:18):
You know again, I think I think Mike.
Speaker 3 (09:20):
Tomlin will be a good fit for him.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
But yeah, really kind of interested to see how that
how that plays out. And then to your point, Mika Fitzpatrick,
like that was not a guy I ever really envisioned
welcoming a return to Miami, not that he necessarily had,
you know, a whole lot of say in this, but
so that'll be interesting to see too how they can,
how they can fit him in and hopefully for their sake,
(09:43):
be able to be a little bit more versatile defense
defensively when when they play teams like the Bills, and
you know, any chance that they have to halt that
dominance that Buffalo has had over the a FC East
really does hinge on being better defensively if you're the
Miami doll which and if.
Speaker 1 (10:01):
You look at the Dolphins defense, especially in that secondary,
there's some serious eyebrow raising question marks. Uh, you know
you're starting corners at this time. I mean, you know
what you're gonna do with Fitzpatrick, but the rest of
this you look at a Storm Duck and uh, you
know the kids from Texas A and em Commerce, they they've
got to figure something out. We're past the draft. What
are you want to do at the corner position in
a year which Miami needs to make the playoffs, Like
they're gonna blow that staff out if they don't make
(10:22):
the playoffs this year, Mike mcdandy be out of a job.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
Well, you'll have a job when Kyle you know, rehires him,
but you.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
Know, it'd be out of a job at a head
coaching job if they if they don't get to the
playoffs this year.
Speaker 4 (10:32):
Yeah, and and you look and the reality is that
they they believe if they're going to do it, they're
going to be a team that that outscores you. And
but that always hinges, of course onto his health. You know,
can they keep him up right? You know Tyreek Hill,
all all the off field stuff there, there there's a constant.
I'm sure Mike McDaniels checks his phone more than maybe
(10:55):
we check ours in this in this.
Speaker 5 (10:56):
Business of like you know what am I.
Speaker 6 (10:58):
Dealing with today?
Speaker 3 (11:00):
Just because they've had.
Speaker 4 (11:01):
So many of those kind of distractions over the last
eighteen months or so. You know, they're obviously getting Jayalen Phillips,
you know, healthy Bradley Chubb like they should have, you know,
some of that defensive front.
Speaker 6 (11:12):
But but yeah, there's.
Speaker 4 (11:13):
Big question marks in the secondary. And you have to
be able to slow people down in this league, especially
you know what we're looking at here in Denver. You know,
patzer tan Is is a beast unto himself, but you're
starting to see what the understanding is of like you need.
Speaker 5 (11:28):
George Peyton said this pretty.
Speaker 4 (11:29):
Early on when he got that job, was like, you
cannot have enough corners. I remember when Vic Fangio the
year that they drafted pat people were saying, well, they
just went out and they got fuller. They just went
out and they signed Ronald Darby. Why are they using
their ninth pick on a corner?
Speaker 3 (11:43):
Of course, going to be a Hall of Same.
Speaker 5 (11:44):
Player, That's why you do it.
Speaker 4 (11:45):
But also like you cannot have enough guys like people
that right now are worrying about you know, ja Kwan McMillan,
Like is he done because Jade Barn's in't here playing
the nickel?
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Like you need these guys.
Speaker 4 (11:56):
You constantly need to be having good players available.
Speaker 5 (12:00):
And I'm excited.
Speaker 6 (12:01):
That's one of the things I'm really.
Speaker 4 (12:02):
Excited to see in camps, Like how did that young
defensive back group start to develop? You know, how does
Riley Moss come back in his second full year as
a starter. Really excited to see what Chris abrams Strain
can do after getting a little taste of some significant
playing time at the end of last season.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
You know, there's just a lot.
Speaker 4 (12:18):
Of I'm eager to see with how guys can kind
of take that next step because you again, you need
that depth, especially in the AFC.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
Yeah they do.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
It's always a nick cosmiter from the athletic, you know,
and the fallout of this trade. Several local Broncos account
suggesting that the Broncos should try to bring in one
of those tight ends, specifically talking about Darnell Washington, now
that they've got you know, Friarmuth, Johnny Smith.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
And Darnold Washington.
Speaker 1 (12:40):
However, I think friar Mouth would be the one that
would be more likely to be on the move than
than Darnell Washington from the Steelers. And I don't think
either one of those guys are needed here. I mean,
you brought in Evan Ingram, and while I think he's
more heavy slot than tight end per se. You've got
Adam Troutman, You've got an HVAC and Date Adkins. You've
got developmental guys in, you know, and loner and Hall
of Famer Lucas Kroll. I think if you're looking at
(13:03):
this this roster from the Broncos, I don't think either
one of those guys or something you would need to
make a move for.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
Yeah, I don't think so either and especially and again
it's like there's always that like part of of the fantasy.
Speaker 3 (13:15):
Football aspect of it.
Speaker 4 (13:16):
But then it's also just understanding just the way that
Sean Payton operates and when he has trust in who
you are as a player with the role that you
specifically fill, you know you're you're going to have work.
And that's that's Adam Trumpman to a t. Like he
is going to stay involved in what they do. He's
going to be a big part of what they do.
And to your point on Atkins, I thought he had
(13:38):
like a pretty.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
Nice second half of the year.
Speaker 4 (13:39):
They started finding ways to use him a little bit
more in the passing game. He's just again another one
of those like quiet under the radar players who who
you can just really count upon, you know, the son
of a coach, doesn't make mistakes. Those are the guys
that as you continue to grow and understand the game,
he's going to.
Speaker 6 (13:55):
Get you know, more action.
Speaker 4 (13:56):
And then yeah, like what, let's see what Caleb Lohner
can do actually in the red zone right where this
guy with his with his basketball background, you know what
kind of what kind of impact can he make down there?
I I to me, tight end is not a position
that I'm that I'm losing sleepover. You know, would you
like to have another guy right that could stretch the
team a little bit?
Speaker 3 (14:14):
Like sure, that that would be.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
You know, nice to have.
Speaker 5 (14:17):
But but I again, I think.
Speaker 4 (14:18):
With what they're going to do and and how how
many mouths are already kind of trying to feed offensively,
it doesn't scream major needs to me right now.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
Nick Cosmidor from the Athletic appreciates as always.
Speaker 6 (14:30):
Bud, thank you so much.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
Men.
Speaker 4 (14:32):
Take it easy, take it easy, absolutely, take care Nick
cos But I always love talking to him because he's
so He was so great covering the Nuggets beat before
he nice on the Broncos beat.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
He's just one of more knowledgeable guys.
Speaker 1 (14:40):
But sports in general, always great to have a conversation
with him. I tend to agree. I mean, yeah, when
when you see these fans online talk we should go
out and get so and so well fair, Okay, cool,
I hear you. But at the same time, there's only
so many balls to go around. You know, if you're good,
if you're putting Darnelt Washington on the field, who are
you taking off the field. That's the expression I guess
(15:01):
I use most commonly who are you taking off the
field to put that guy on the field. And then
then at that point you're like, okay, yeah, wait a minute,
I don't want to take Evan engermoff field.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
Okay, I don't.
Speaker 1 (15:10):
I don't want to take Gorland Sutton or Marvin Mihams
off the field, or Veile or Pat Bryn or whomever
off the field. And so that that that becomes that
conversation at that point in time.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
We'll get a little bit more to that.
Speaker 1 (15:22):
Next we get to Lance Sanderson coming up next to
Prayer Broucous Country Night.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
And I was listening to the commercials during the break.
Can they hear that Casey Cayson voice?
Speaker 1 (15:34):
And that threw me for an absolute loop, Like Casey
Cason passed away in twenty fourteen. It takes you back
in time, doesn't it? Well, it does, but I'm like,
I was like, wait, what do we is this? Like
AI generated? You know, I hope they don't start doing
stuff like that. Like the more I think about that,
the more I don't want that to happen. But yeah,
just hear that voice, like, freak me out a little
during the commercial. So I say it's been, he's been,
(15:55):
he's passed away over a decade.
Speaker 2 (15:56):
To go, HEYI is going to take us all down,
one job at a time.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
Probably they're coming for me next. Where else can you
get this? Where else can you get bad dad jokes?
And I don't know if they I Cantimes Sport Enter yet. Yeah,
they'll get there, might say it for a little while,
longer they'll get it to have it actively listening to
the show and the good they'll get there, or will
just be some robot over. You'd be like Jeff from
like the Craig Ferguson Show, be sitting here talking to Steve.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
I can't Uh, yeah, I don't know. Anyway, let's go
to the.
Speaker 1 (16:23):
Can it comes through a hotline and bring on a guy,
Lance Sanderson.
Speaker 2 (16:26):
From my Ohio huddle. Lance, how you doing buddy? I'm
doing good?
Speaker 5 (16:30):
Then?
Speaker 6 (16:30):
How are you? It's spend a long time no talk, man,
How are you doing?
Speaker 2 (16:32):
I'm doing pretty well. Yeah, it's been far too long.
Speaker 3 (16:35):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
I was just lamenting.
Speaker 1 (16:36):
We heard the Casey Cason commercial during the break and
I was sitting there lamenting about how you know AI
is gonna eventually come.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
For us all?
Speaker 1 (16:43):
And I, yeah, it just it freaks me out when
I hear stuff like that. It's not does does that
bother you at all?
Speaker 2 (16:48):
Or do you even? Do you care? Like about the like?
AI take it over, Hey, it.
Speaker 6 (16:54):
Doesn't bother me. It's more of the uh, you know,
players in the NFL breaking news before you get the
chance to do it because you're a fake NFL insider apparently.
Speaker 3 (17:03):
So there's that.
Speaker 6 (17:04):
Yes, yes, there is Ramsey breaking the news of him
getting traded. Where the hell were you at on that news? Then? Damn?
Speaker 1 (17:11):
I texted both Dave Logan and Ryan Edwards. Hold on,
let me let me pull this back up so I
can I can tell you when I texted them about this.
Speaker 5 (17:18):
Actually, I'm just giving you a hell buddy.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
Friday, June twentieth, at seven to twenty pm. That is
what I That is what I do.
Speaker 6 (17:25):
Hey, good for you.
Speaker 3 (17:26):
Man's right here.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
Maybe I'll tweet that out later, I know.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
I mean that I've been trying to take a vacation
during this uh this supposed to be dead period, but
the the NFL keeps tripping us up. They do have
the big trade today, obviously, Ramsey and John new Smith
going to Pittsburgh make if it's Patrick headed to back
to Miami. I should say, does that that trade move
the needle for either team? Is this one a case
of a trade that doesn't necessarily make either team even better?
Speaker 5 (17:55):
Well?
Speaker 6 (17:55):
I think that the Steelers defense you got a lot better.
But I also think that the Miami Dolphins got way
worse than their secondary. I mean, Jalen Ramsey was the
one guy that they had, and it cater Coo, who's
long gone by now, Like, what do the Miami Dolphins
have in their secondary? It was Jalen Ramsey and then
a whole bunch of nothing at least, let you know,
with the Steelers put this roster back in twenty eighteen,
(18:16):
twenty nineteen, Yeah, they're Super Bowl contenders, But doesn't move
the metle right now here in twenty twenty five. Probably not.
I mean, like I don't really know how to gauge
this trade. It's really kind of a loss for both sides.
Like you get rid of Maka fitzpathwate to bring in
Jalen Ramsey. So the Steelers defense isn't really better than
(18:37):
it was before. And then the Dolphins they needed corner depth,
They needed corner help, like in a major way. And
they get rid of their best cornerback to add a
safety where they didn't need safety help. To me, the
whole trade made absolutely no sense for either side other
than let's just run it back with as many you know,
(18:58):
older players as we've Bossley can and hopefully catch lightning
in a bottle and compete for a Super Bowl in
twenty twenty five.
Speaker 3 (19:06):
The whole move, this whole.
Speaker 6 (19:07):
Day with the Steelers made zero sense. Like eating think
Johnny Smith, it's Arthur Smith's binkie, like you said earlier,
it's Arthur Smith's binky but they's thought Pat Pryornmuth. Why
not just move on with him, you said, Darneaul Washington?
Why not just roll on with the death you guys
already have, Like I don't understand what the Steelers are
doing other than just trying to appease to Aaron Rodgers
(19:30):
and bring in all the homeboys.
Speaker 1 (19:32):
Yeah, this is it is a weird setup. I mean,
you talk about Miami, you're talking about a franchise that
is I mean, if this coaching staff, this front office,
so they don't make the playoffs, they're gone. And you're
looking at it at a corner room that is going
to start. You mentioned Kidderkoh and it's storm Duck, Like
that's the starting quarters here, I mean, like what we
what are we even talking about? The front seven is okay,
(19:56):
but the only reason the Broncos even got Jade Barrett
in the first place is because the the Miami Dolphins
decided to go ahead and take Kenneth's grant instead of
getting any semblance of a reliable corner body on their secondary.
Speaker 5 (20:10):
Yeah, and it works out better.
Speaker 6 (20:12):
For the Broncos because they have one of the better secondaries,
at least on paper. I mean after the additions of
Talanoa Hufanga getting Drake green Lawn to shore up the
middle half of that secondary. I mean passer ten obviously
the best cornerback in the NFL. Defensive Player of the
Year Riley Mossatt for all the hate that he gets
for the tail end of the season coming off of
the torn NCL, he played so well in the front
(20:34):
half of last year. Like you just add more depth
and Jawon McMillan is a quality slot cornerback. It's unfortunate
to see what's going to happen with him because I
don't know where he fits into the mold, right Now,
what does Jakwan McMillan's future look like with the Denver Broncos.
I mean, you got Chris ABMs Drains, who played really
well as a tail in the last season. You bring
(20:56):
in John A. Barns who had inside outside versatility. He
can drop back in place in safety, You can play
him as a like a nickel hybrid linebacker role.
Speaker 5 (21:04):
This this defense, which was what.
Speaker 6 (21:08):
A top three defense, top two and probably not top two,
top one defense in the NFL last season, they just
got deeper, they got better, they got more versatile, they
got more athletic because they got everything. And it makes
me so excited for this defense, so excited for the
season moving forward. Man, Like, seriously, this team could compete
(21:29):
for a division crown, let alone a playoff Earth.
Speaker 1 (21:32):
Yeah, I tend to agree five, six, six, nine zeros
in text. I talk with Land Sanderson from high Hotel
and then you look at you know, moving John who Smith. Okay,
it didn't work out there, whatever, But this is another
area where Miami is sorely lacking in the in the
tight end department. Ferrell Brown, a guy who's been on
what four teams in the last three years and has
(21:54):
seventy receptions for his seven year career, and then you've.
Speaker 2 (21:58):
Got Julian Hill Tanner. It's just I mean, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (22:01):
I'm looking at this thing from both sides, and then
you go over to the Pittsburgh side of this and
it's like a retirement home for corners. Between Darius Slay
at thirty four and Jaylen Ramsey at thirty, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (22:11):
To me, it's just felt like movement for the sake
of movement.
Speaker 1 (22:14):
You look at Denver, you just got through talking about that,
where you've got a great defense already, his top three
defense last year by any stretch. Whatever way you want
to put him. If you want to sell them short,
you put them third. You want to be honest, you
put them to a one. The Broncos don't really have
very many areas where you have question marks, but I
do believe those reside on the defensive side of the ball.
Speaker 2 (22:36):
The inside linebacker.
Speaker 1 (22:37):
You bring in green Law, You've got Singleton coming back,
but both those guys are coming off injury start out
as well. And then Drew Sanders has never really taken
ownership of that position.
Speaker 2 (22:47):
I mean he's moved around a little bit. And then
the safety position.
Speaker 1 (22:49):
I mean, you've got Hufaga and Jones who looked like
top tier starters, respectively, but behind that PJ Lock is hurt.
And then it's a who's who of guys that have
not lived up to the promise the safety position. Should
the Broncos be out there looking for for depth here
or are we just going to roll the dice at
the inside backup position stays healthier.
Speaker 2 (23:07):
Than it has.
Speaker 6 (23:09):
Oh, then you hit on two of the bigger questions
that I have for this Broncos defense moving forward. Obviously
with like you said, you know Greenlock coming in, he's
coming off the torn Achilles from a from in the
Super Bowl a couple of years ago. Uh Telenohufanga at
the safety position coming off the torn acl like the
death concerns Alex Ingleton at linebacker coming off the torn
(23:30):
a cl justin Surnad. While he played admirably as a
fill in role, especially early in the season after Alex
Singleton towards a cl like that, room still has a
lot of questions. Can you can you have a guy
that's not a sea ball chase ball linebacker? Do you
have a guy that can drop back into coverage and
fill gaps in in the seams and run with tight
(23:52):
ends moving latterly, can you do you have a guy
that can can blitz in the A gaps and just
fill out and continue to grow this linebacker room. That
to me is the bigger concern. And I was listening
to you talking to Steve Atwater earlier and he was
talking about Drew Sanders. What is Drew Sanders like? Where
is he at right now? He struggled so much coming
(24:15):
off the edge a couple of years ago, coming out
to torn Achilles last year, he barely played at the
end of the season. We saw some good rests there,
but the depth of this linebacker unit is a major question,
especially considering the concerns with the starters at safety. I
love Brandon Jones and I thought that he played very,
very well, and I think PFF had him ranked as
(24:35):
like the number six free safety in the league last
season in terms of playing a single high coverage and
moving sideline to sideline, But that's not something that he's
typically known for doing. He likes to play closer to
the line of sprimag He likes driving downhill vertically towards
the football. As a quality tackler, You're bringing in Tallahohufanga,
who is a box safety. So who is going to
(24:58):
play the deep safety if one of these guys goes down?
Is it PJ Lock?
Speaker 5 (25:03):
Is it J L.
Speaker 6 (25:04):
Skinner, who's more of a box safety. Is at Devon
Key who has some range to him. Those are the
biggest concerns for me on this this Fronco's defense. And
then let's let's tie in the fact that the defensive
front seven and the ability to go and just create
so much pressure. Is Vance Joseph going to rely on
(25:25):
the blitz packages that he did early on in the
season and rely on the guys up front winning one
on one battles as much as they did last year.
Those are big questions. Is it going to be more
of a reliance on the front floor or a reliance
on this secondary which seems to have several big time
key pieces that can be impact players.
Speaker 1 (25:47):
I'm with you on Atlance Statterson mile eye huddle. That
to me is the thing. It's just like, again, you've
got some guys that I think on paper, you look
at this thing and you're like, all right, this is
the best defense in the league.
Speaker 2 (25:57):
But there are some you.
Speaker 1 (25:58):
Know, some slight cracks there in terms of you know, depth,
or guys coming back off injury or fits, those kinds
of things that it does have me look at it.
Everybody wants to talk about the offensive side of the ball,
and then rightfully so, I mean, it's the second year
of Bo Nicks and I think a lot of people
are hoping for, you know, another step forward with him.
But I would say, I would I would caution people that,
you know, second year quarterbacks, that tends to be the
(26:21):
sophomore slump is a real thing, and it does tend
to be maybe not a step back, but the rest
of the league maybe catching up to some of the
things you do.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
Teams are gonna have a whole offseason and I say,
tape on you.
Speaker 1 (26:31):
They're gonna they're gonna look at what they think you're
not good at and try to put you in those
kind of positions. Do we think we put enough around
bow that we that we miss that second year slide,
that sophomore slump, if you will, well.
Speaker 6 (26:45):
To me coming into in a training camp, I have
three gigantic questions for the offensive side of the football.
And first things first is Sean Payton. Everybody knows the
whole run the ball on the top of this place.
She have lose a Chargers game last year? Run the ball?
How much are that Broncos going to run the football
and take the burden off of bo Nicks. As in
(27:05):
terms of a play creator, You go out, you got r. J.
Harvey in the second round of the draft of for
a couple of trade downs, and I love R. J.
Speaker 3 (27:12):
Harvey.
Speaker 6 (27:12):
I think that he's a dynamic playmaker. You go out
and get JK. Domind's in free agency right right before
Mini camp. You let Javonte Williams go, And to me,
that was probably a big indictment on the running back
room as a whole. You gohea and add two guys,
You let go the starter from last season, and you
don't show the consistency of play calling to allow these
(27:35):
guys to get into a rhythm, get into a groove,
to really get their head going, to get their legs
going underneath them. How does audrid estimate fit in this
situation like that? That's another big question. What about Juliam McLaughlin,
Like you have pretty much completely overturned this running back room.
Does Sjohn Paton not trust these guys or does he
(27:57):
not want to run the football. That's the big question there.
Then you go into bone Nicks and the growth and
progression that he had as a quarterback this last season.
I mean the linear progression he showed from Week four
through Week sixteen seventeen. He showed the capability of being
a quality quarterback, a quality starting quarterback, a guy that
you can lean on, go out and make plays for you.
(28:18):
I mean, he showed the playmaking ability with his legs.
He led the NFL in passing yards outside of the
line of scrimmage or outside of.
Speaker 3 (28:25):
The pocket last season.
Speaker 6 (28:27):
Like the guy can go and create plays for you.
And then the third thing I have for this offense
is can this offensive line continue to stay healthy? Can
they continue to be on the field, continue that continuity.
Can they continue to be the number one pass block
win rate offensive line, number one run block win rate
offensive line. Like, if they can continue to build that
(28:49):
growth and build that continuity, continue to grow, this offense
can actually take leaps and downs. And it starts with
at the top Sean Payton and I have serious concerns
about his ability to just lean into the running game,
which he really wants to apparently on tape, on paper,
he wants to do that. Let's see if he actually
does that and helps Bow grow and helps accentuate Bow's
(29:14):
ability and build that play action passing game. And if
they do that, this often could be a top ten
unit in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (29:20):
So I would alad stand or some balle high huddle. Yeah,
I tend to agree with that, and I you know,
when this offseason started out, that was the thing. I
was like, you're gonna have to lean into the run game.
Sean Payton is going to have to go against his
his heart's desire or where he's you know, Drew Brees
two point zero was passing to set up more passes,
and you're going to have to run the ball effectively
a time. The only time I could recall last season
(29:41):
where I saw a commitment to running the football with
that game that they wound down the clock, I think
his final six minutes against Kansas City and then ultimately
had the field goal blocked on that ill fated play
that still draws the iron rage of most Broncos fans.
But they were effective. They were effective. It was an
effective drive. The run game was was effective. He even
(30:01):
had one game and I can't remember which game it was,
when he had on the waffle house men. You play
call sheet there, run the ball, don't forget to run
the ball, and then he forgot to run the ball.
You know, we saw it in the playoffs against the Bills.
You know, this is one of those things where the
game started getting away from when they quit.
Speaker 2 (30:14):
Run the football. And you know, I hope, I am
hoping that the combination of bringing in a guy like JK.
Speaker 1 (30:20):
Dobbins, adding R. J. Harvey a second year of adric Estimate,
et cetera. I am hoping that that facilitates a commitment
to the run game, because I think that'll make both better.
But I think you brought up what is perhaps the
most underrated point in all of this, and that is
can that offensive line tend to continue to stay healthy
because you have a lot of money invested in it
Between Bulls, Powers, Miners and McGlinchey. Wattenberg stole the rookie deal,
(30:43):
but you've got a lot of money invested in this
line and it has stayed relatively healthy. But you look
down at the backups for them, Polshowsky, Gard, Julio Forsyth,
throck Morton, Pert Crumb.
Speaker 2 (30:53):
That is not what you want in the game.
Speaker 1 (30:57):
If any of this offensive line goes down for an
extended period of time, it may be.
Speaker 2 (31:00):
An issue for this team.
Speaker 6 (31:03):
Absolutely can be. The death is definitely concerned. But we
all completely forget the fact that Quinn Bailey exists on
this roster and he went down early in training camp
with a broken ankle. What does his health look like?
Speaker 5 (31:17):
Is he a guy that you can continue.
Speaker 6 (31:19):
To rely upon. Matt Pert played pretty well in some
backups nets. My big question here is Luke Wattenberg at
starting at center. He played very well in past protection.
He was the number one rated center according to Pro
Football Focus. In past protection great last season if I
remember correctly. But in run blocking he was not great
(31:40):
because he doesn't last. He doesn't have the upper body
strength and the grit strength to really drive block when
you're running inside zone and duo plays. He wants to
be out on the move. He wants to be moving around,
trying to move down the field pickoff linebackers rather than
be attached grabbing ahold of the defensive lineman and driving
in that direct. So that, to me is the big question.
(32:02):
Alex Floorside and you talked about the the block field
goal against Kansas City. What is the center depth. To me,
the center depth is the bigger issue. Can Luke Wattenberg
continue to grow and be a better run blocker this season,
especially given the fact, you know so last year when
he watched the Broncos running game, they had a lot
(32:23):
of designer runs. They did a lot of pin poll,
they did a lot of inside zon and duo. They
were very creative. Sean Payton does a good job designing
a run scheme. When you're running back run into your
offensive lineman all the time. Like Javonte Williams, it looks
like he ran with his eyes closed. But there were
still there were still opportunities for Luke Wattenburg to create
(32:43):
more openings on the inside the a gaps like moving
up to the second level. He's got to get stronger.
He's got to get a lot more accurate with his
hand placement. He's got to get a lot better with
his hips, He's got to get a lot better with
his knee drive. That's the biggest question for this offensive
line is what does Luke Wattenberg look like going into
your three?
Speaker 1 (33:03):
And that is going to be a big question for UH.
For this thing is UH, As we continued lance the
time always goes too fast. We got to get out
of here. I appreciate you jumping on to talk to
us tonight. Look forward talking again soon, Bud.
Speaker 5 (33:15):
Yeah, that sounds good.
Speaker 6 (33:15):
Hey. By the way, before you letting me go, I'm
still waiting on that vetterver and stets and Blend for cologne. Dude.
You gotta gotta get your get your stuff together. Figure
it out, buddy, I do.
Speaker 2 (33:25):

Speaker 1 (33:29):

jump out here and hit a commercial break, but uh,
Brockos Country Night be back after this
