Transforming Outcomes for Infants with Congenital Defects Through Early Detection

The Children’s Mercy Fetal Cardiac Clinic has a close working relationship with the Elizabeth J. Ferrell Fetal Health Center at Children’s Mercy, one of the few freestanding children’s hospitals in the United States that provides special care delivery services for mothers carrying a baby with congenital defects. Since its opening, the Fetal Health Center has consulted with more than 1,000 families and has delivered more than 500 infants needing specialized care. Approximately 40 percent of these consults have been for a cardiac diagnosis. The Fetal Cardiac team diagnoses these potentially dangerous heart conditions before babies are born and then ensures the best possible outcomes for children through careful monitoring during the pregnancy and delivery process.Tara M. Swanson, MD is here to help you better understand your options if you or someone you love is carrying a baby with congenital defects.
