Speaker 1 (00:01):
The views and opinions expressed in the following programmer.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Those are the speaker and don't necessarily represent those of
the station, it's staff, management or ownership.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
Welcome to finding Out with Pete and the Poet Gold
and our special series to celebrate Women's History Month titled
Poet Gold Knows Women Lead Duchess Luncheon, gathering women leaders
of Duchess County to participate in my workshop. We're going
to open up today with name affirmations. You're not present
for me, You're present for you. This is about you,
(00:32):
So make sure we have those phones on a lock.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Once again, thank you for being here.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
You know, we started to do this because we noticed
there's a growing trend across the country of women stepping
up into leadership positions, and I've recognize that it occurs
as well in the mid Hudson Valley. So it was
our way of bringing folks together today for Poet Gold
Women Lead Duchess, a gathering a kick off Women's History
(01:01):
Month here at iHeartRadio.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
Shout out for iHeart.
Speaker 1 (01:07):
Here in the Hudson Valley, bringing together women leaders and
activators from diverse backgrounds, from meaningful celebrations and conversation and kinship.
So it's an opportunity to learn from each other, get
to know someone in the room that perhaps you have
never met before, and in the process, our listeners get
to know you in a deep and honest way. So
(01:29):
here's the deal which brings me to the following. There
will be a few questions you will be asked, and
in the process of conversing at your tables, you'll notice
the microphones. The conversations will be recorded and then edit
it down to be shared throughout the month of March
for Women's Month on our show Finding Out with Pete
(01:49):
and the Poet Gold and other iHeart stations. Now, I
recognize that everyone in the room is important and your
roles are high highly valued in our communities. I want
to take a moment to thank Chris Marino, Senior Vice
president of Programming, Felicia Kershner, Promotion Director, Sharon Pfeiffer, marketing controller,
(02:11):
and our producer and engineer Uncle Mike for supporting this
and supporting this great vision and getting behind the vision.
And of course Peter Leonard co hosts for finding out
what Pete and the Poel Gold. So while you're eating
you notice a couple of things on your table. There
(02:33):
are name tags. Please fill in your name tag as well,
so that people can identify who you are. And as well,
I'm going to give you an activity to do while
you're eat and reflect upon and it's what I like
to start, what I call positive affirmation. And those who've
been with me before know this activity and you can
explain it to.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
Other people at your table.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
But basically, we all stand for something, you know, and
oftentimes we're defined by other people and sometimes so how
people define us is not accurate, but we seem to
step into those roles to appease them. What's important is
to know something positive about yourself, particularly on that down day.
You know, in that day, I like to say, when
(03:12):
you need a little armor, where your self esteem is
feeling a little low, what is about you that's positive
that you feel you carry with you every day, about
your character that you want people to know about you,
or maybe it may be something that you want to
grow into. So for instance, let's say for me, I'm
going to give an example.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
My name is Gold. My positive affirmation is gifted.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
Gold starts with a G. It matches the first letter
of my name, so I'm gifted gold. So when I
say the word gift, what comes to mind for you,
anybody in the room. And this is the way you
speak into the microphone, folks, So when you respond, I
want you to be dead center into the microphone. Okay,
just pull it across close to you. And this will
also help when you're giving your wonderful speeches at events.
(03:59):
Oftentimes that events, people stand at the podium and they
do like this. You see the difference, and then everyone's pointing,
going like this.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
The microphone has.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
To be right here center when you speak, okay, because
all of you have great stories that people need to hear.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Go ahead, Uncle Michael.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
So when I say gifted, gold, gifted, what does it
mean when I say the word gifted?
Speaker 3 (04:25):
What comes to mind, Lisa, reciprocity.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
Reciprocity, giving, giving anyone else into the mic, into the mic, talent, talent. Okay, Well,
I'm gonna let you know why I chose gifted.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
Go.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
I chose the word gift because every day when I
wake up, it's a gift. You are a gift. Every
human being I encountered becomes a gift. Whether they feel
the encounter is positive or negative, it's still a gift.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
There's a lesson to be learned in the process. So
it reminds me.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
That no matter what I may be going through or
challenges or joy, that all of it is a gift.
And so it's my personal reminder. And in that process
then I can become the gift. But I have to
acknowledge first the gift that's been given to me in
breadth and in life. So that's why I chose the
(05:17):
word gift to gold. So let's say, for instance, your
name is Paula and you're not a really patient person.
So maybe Paula becomes patient Paula because it may be
something that Paula wants to aspire to become and recognizes
and is not afraid to say, you know, I'm not
the most patient person and I'd like to have that,
(05:38):
you know.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
So I'm going to figure out how to grow into that.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
So while you're eating, talk amongst yourselves, reflect, think about
your word. There's an index card on the table, Pick
the color that you want.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
And write down your name.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
Remember you're using the first letter of your name to
match your affirmation. So if your name starts with a
V and your name is Vanessa, you might be victorious Vanessa,
So take some time to do that please. Oh yes, okay,
(06:16):
well i'll give you. I'll give you poetic license. Houth
that okay, I'll accept that.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
Yes, yes, all right, and that would beautiful.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
And please share the activity for anyone who's walked into
the room a little later, thank you, so that they know.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
Okay, Springa, be sure to grab some food.
Speaker 4 (06:42):
Though.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Does everyone have their words?
Speaker 1 (06:49):
Do we have our words? Do we have our affirmation words?
Everyone's done? Can you take your card and put it
up in the air so I know that you have
completed the task. Raise your card in the air. That'd
be a nice little picture, right, yeah, let me take
that shot. I'm doing double duty today.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
Naughty couldn't be with us today. Okay, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
We'll get to everyone because we have some things to do.
But who'd like to share? Please speak into the microphone?
What And here's here's how we do it. When the
person says their affirmation, we repeat it and then they
explain why they chose that. Okay, so we repeat it
as a group.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
So who would you like to go? Okay?
Speaker 5 (07:39):
So my name is Carmen and I am a connector.
So I had to cheat a little bit because my
name is actually starts with a K.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
For those you get poetic license for that, it's okay.
Speaker 5 (07:52):
So the reason why I picked Connector is because ever
since I was a young child, I could see things
that didn't really seem like they go together and make
sense of them and pull them together. And I feel
like that is my superpower, to find things and people
and places and things that don't seem to work well
and put them together.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
So who is she? Very good? Thank you? Thank you?
Someone else please.
Speaker 6 (08:21):
Hi?
Speaker 3 (08:22):
I picked slow Down? Slow Down? What a slow down, Soprina?
Slow down, Soprina.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
Everyone says slow down, Soprina.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
Thank you? Why'd you pick that slow down Sabrina? Because
I was.
Speaker 7 (08:38):
Supposed to learn a lesson last year when I went
to some health issues.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
And I had to slow down.
Speaker 7 (08:46):
But I've ran right back, right back, right up there,
not being able to do everything I want to do
and putting my finger in every pie.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
So I need to pull out a little bit goadg
you down, Zeprena.
Speaker 8 (09:04):
Yes, I'm gonna take this right over because it's right here.
So I'm Yvette. So it starts with a why. So
I got license from poet Gold.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
To try a different language.
Speaker 8 (09:15):
So this is actually adena word from so where I'm
from in Puerto Rico. So it's okay if you can't
say it on the first try, but maybe you will.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
It's yoka who vet, Yoka who yvet? That was amazing, Okay.
Speaker 8 (09:32):
So it's the Dyina word for the spirit of fertility.
But I didn't mean it in fertility, and it's not
really how we use it. We use it for the
power of the woman. That's right, and it's a perfect
month for that. Obviously, it's a perfect day for that.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Yoka who.
Speaker 8 (09:51):
And that's us because I think that we show up
and I feel, at least in my work as mom,
the legislature, everything, that I'm showing up one hundred and
more than my male counterparts every single day. But I
love it because that's who we are, and that's it.
(10:13):
Yoka who, Yoka who? Yes, Yoka who. I think we're
all gonna be going Yokaho Yoka who, Yoka who?
Speaker 2 (10:20):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (10:21):
Okay? Anyone at this side, I think we have to
anyone inside of the room. My name is Deborah and
that's d E.
Speaker 9 (10:27):
B R A.
Speaker 4 (10:29):
And I'm determined Deborah.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
Let's say it.
Speaker 4 (10:34):
Determined Deborah, and I chose that because I am determined
to be all that God has purposed me to be.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
I am determmented. Yes, so I'm determined Deborah, determined Devra.
Who else can we have over here?
Speaker 2 (10:57):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (10:57):
See, Laura?
Speaker 1 (10:57):
Are you pointing for the Okay, that's right.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
Hi.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
My name is Laura and I'm limited limitless Laura.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
Let's say it limitless.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
Laura, because there is no limit to what we can do.
And my job at the Community Foundations is to bring
us together and find resources and connect resources together. And
I think that there's no limit to our ability to
do that.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
Anyone else want to ship? Yes, Mindy.
Speaker 4 (11:40):
So my name is Mindy and I'm multitasking Mindy. A.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
Everyone saying multitasking Mindy.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
And that's because I have a full time job and
I'm a full time volunteer.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
Got you all right? Thank you? Let's get you.
Speaker 8 (12:00):
Wait.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
Wait, okay, I see somebody pointing back in the back
of the room. Do you have time for one more?
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (12:05):
I do.
Speaker 9 (12:06):
My name is Laura and my word is lyrical.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
Laura.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
Oh, I want to say it lyrical, Laura.
Speaker 9 (12:15):
I started my career in singing and opera singing and
Now my job is to you know, help you know,
midwife grants, you know, bring help bring grants into existence
and help bring beautiful projects into existence. And you know,
in both instances, I'm using my voice for continue to
use my voice for the highest good, excellent, excellent.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
I think we have time for one more. Yes, but.
Speaker 10 (12:42):
Sabrina, I have a big point to sometimes sunshine, Sabrina, Sunshine, Sabrina, Sunshine, Sabrina.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
Because it's I can relate to that sunshine. Yes, it's
freaking cold. I think absolutely, let the sunshine shine.
Speaker 1 (13:08):
Yes, it's it's been a it's been a challenging WinCE.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
It hasn't it on the East Coast?
Speaker 9 (13:12):
I know.
Speaker 1 (13:12):
I called the producer the other night. I was like,
you open for a collaboration. I wrote a summer song.
I think people need a summer song, you know, Lisa,
I saw you had handed them to be the last one.
Speaker 6 (13:22):
Actually it comes from Sakima and I have hesitation about it.
But it's legendary loving Lisa.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
Oh, okay, okay, now now before well, let's say it altogether.
Speaker 3 (13:36):
Legendary loving Lisa.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
Now I'm going to say this because you started, we
preference that it came from Sachima. Is it something that
you walk into and that you hold for yourself.
Speaker 6 (13:49):
I actually hesitate from I hesitated from embracing it, and
because it doesn't sit naturally to me, I think, and
that's the case with a lot of women. They don't
take credit for the work that they do. And then
I thought about the moment we're in and how we
right now have to take stands and stand up for
(14:11):
what we believe in. And so each one of us,
in many ways is becoming a legend.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
But we lead with love.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
Okay, all right, Okay, see stepping into that space got
you very good, like patient Paula.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
Right, yes, wonderful.
Speaker 1 (14:26):
All right, So this is what I want to do. Now,
how's everybody with the food we're still eating? Yeah, okay,
So so I'm gonna let you guys eat for about
another five or ten minutes, and then we're going to
go into a group activity. Okay, all right, so talk
amongst yourself. We can have some music, Uncle Mike, Okay, okay,
(15:04):
we are back.
Speaker 3 (15:05):
Just another housekeeping announ.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
There's a plastic bag looks like this for all of
the bottles, all of the water bottles.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
I'll place it over there in the corner.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
Please discarde the water bottles, not the cups, the cups
of styrophone. Please discard the water bottles into this plastic bag. Okay,
if everyone can have a seat, let's take a seat
so we move on to our next activity.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
Ladies, we have a seat.
Speaker 1 (15:39):
Thank you so much. Appreciate No problem, no problem. We're excited.
We're excited. So part of what you're going to experience
today is a workshop that I put together called Be
the Poem. I have a couple of workshops, Stream Outloud
Poetry Workshop and the Be the Poem Workshop, which is
based upon this book.
Speaker 3 (15:56):
I'm gonna read your short story. Everyone's gonna get a
of the book.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
I know some of you already have a copy, so
you can give it away to someone else. You can
give it away at the gift And I appreciate those
of you who have all of you, but those of
you who have supported me along this journey. Son, tell
you a story about rufus.
Speaker 3 (16:14):
Rufus. All right, some of y'all know rufus.
Speaker 1 (16:18):
All right, rufus robbing us from ultimate success or robbing
you from ultimate success.
Speaker 3 (16:27):
Here's a gem, did you know?
Speaker 1 (16:29):
According to the National Science Foundation, an average person has
about twelve thousand to sixty thousand thoughts per day. Of those,
eighty percent or negative and ninety five percent of repetitive thoughts.
If we repeat those negative thoughts, we think negative way
more than we think positive. I would like to introduce
you to Rufus, who behaves like the world is a
(16:50):
dark and scary place. Rufus is afraid of light. Rufus
is always fussing, super critical, letting you know who you
can't be or what you can't do, often before you
even try. If Rufus fears things are not going their
way or not being heard, Rufus will insist you be
overly impulsive, or don't speak at all because you're going
to sound silly or not smart.
Speaker 3 (17:12):
Rufus is the voice that shouts.
Speaker 1 (17:14):
Don't raise your hand, don't speak first, Oh no, why
did you say that?
Speaker 3 (17:19):
Don't sit in the front row.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
Rufus is a sly, slippery, scheming creature whose only prayers
are curses. And don't think you're going to try something new?
What made you think you could accomplish that? Who do
you know that has done that before? Nobody? Yeah, I
thought so. These people don't want you there anyway. You
don't know anyone. They can't be trusted.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
Look at them looking at you. See I told you so?
You to this, you to that?
Speaker 1 (17:45):
Look through that window. See those people in there. They're
not like you, their other You don't belong here.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
And Rufus can be mean.
Speaker 1 (17:57):
Rufus loves pushing you to self destruct, to embrace the
story of I told you so. Then Rufus relaxes into
their only joy, watching you slowly seep into disappointment, perhaps sadness,
and without the proper coping skills, even depression. If you
allow rufus, Rufus will rob us you from ultimate success.
(18:20):
Rufus is the dream stealer. Rufus is a doubter. So
how do we protect our spirit from the potential silos
of fear slash, negative or overly critical thoughts created and
housed in our mind? After large dose of personal experience
and listening to many stories from children to adults through
(18:41):
the years, individuals I may have coached in sports, trained
in corporate America, or mentored on my marketing team, or
she had experienced with friends or families about what holds
us back in certain areas of our lives. I needed
to label it. Rufus was unmasked, a doubter for sure.
Not ignoring this powerful voice, but learning to read direct
(19:02):
it through doing something positive, changing the narrative through small
action steps, accomplish a goal exercise to release those wonderful endorphins,
the body's natural feel good internal stress reliever.
Speaker 3 (19:15):
Even listening to Rufus.
Speaker 1 (19:17):
Rufus may not always present well, sometimes may appear to
be harsh. I believe it is important to sort some
of these thoughts out versus living in an ongoing struggle.
Confronting your Rufus is not always confrontational. It can be
quietly done with quiet intention, gently learning to laugh at
(19:38):
poor Rufus's repetitive old story while coaxing them to the light.
Speaker 3 (19:44):
They are simply thoughts. You see. It is our innerstanding
that leads to a deeper understanding. And once you understand
that truth and resolve to act.
Speaker 1 (19:57):
On it, you will be the poem. M yeah, so
there are four steps this what is be the poem?
The first step is living authentically. So I'm gonna ask
you a question. You're gonna go into your groups. You're
gonna put a piece of paper on the wall. You'll
(20:18):
see each sheet is numbered for a group. Come here,
take one sheet of paper, put it on top of that.
Speaker 3 (20:24):
So this way we're not writing, letting the ink go
through on the wall. Okay.
Speaker 1 (20:28):
And the first question is we're gonna make four circles.
And I've scratched this concept and decided today we're gonna
do four circles.
Speaker 3 (20:39):
You know, it's called thinking on the fly. Right, let's see.
This is how we're going to do this. Alright, a
goal marker on your Okay, we're gonna do four circles. Okay,
because the circles are going to have some arms to it,
so grade four circles. It's gonna be great service a
(21:00):
circle day. It's like sunshine all right.
Speaker 1 (21:10):
Yeah, So I first be the pall and you're gonna
work on this as a group. And it's about living authentically.
So what does it mean to live authentically? For you
guys and fill in the circle.
Speaker 3 (21:24):
Okay, what does it mean to live authentically?
Speaker 1 (21:26):
Grab a sheet of paper, let's go into the wall,
take some markers, make your first circle living authentically? What
does it mean to live authentically? Once sheep per group
one sheet pro group.
Speaker 6 (21:52):
You.
Speaker 1 (21:55):
Grab the next one if you want the one underneath
that that one ripped. Okay, Number five is back here.
Number five is a back wall. Yeah, well take the
sheet of paper though, Take the sheet, put it on
top of that.
Speaker 3 (22:10):
So the no inkitts on the wall. Oh each, no, no, no, Sabrina,
what group are you with?
Speaker 8 (22:18):
Three?
Speaker 1 (22:19):
Three is over there? There's a corner number in each
in each paper. Okay, get with your group. Let's get
with your group, Liz, just recause, let's stand come on,
let's get with your group because we're gonna be speeding
through this now.
Speaker 3 (22:40):
Is everyone clear on the instructions? Okay?
Speaker 1 (22:43):
The question is living authentically? What does it mean to
live authentically?
Speaker 8 (22:47):
For you?
Speaker 3 (22:48):
And let's fill in a circle. Let's draw a circle
in there. Fill it in.
Speaker 1 (22:51):
What does it mean to live authentically? And you have
three to five minutes to fill that in? Fill stuff in,
fill the circle up? What does it mean to live authentically?
That wall's empty over there? What's going on with this group?
Speaker 3 (23:07):
Group number two? What's going on? Group number two? You're
not at a wall. Go to your wall, Group number two?
Do you have your paper? Do you have two papers
over there?
Speaker 1 (23:17):
Rebecca? Rebecca? Okay, living authentically? What does it mean to
live authentically.
Speaker 3 (23:29):
Let's fill it in. What does that mean for you?
Speaker 1 (23:33):
You have two minutes to fill this in. Two minutes
to fill this in. Let's write in two minutes to
fill this in, two minutes to fill it in. We
have more circles to get to. This is gonna get
deep on you, guys. We're just scratching the surface. One
(23:54):
minute left, one minute left. Let's put something in those circles.
What is it to be to live authentically?
Speaker 3 (24:10):
Yeah? Just one circle right now, living authentically? One circle?
One circle?
Speaker 1 (24:21):
Where in one circle living authentically? Okay, all right, now
there's another part to this. Now with your little sunshine
ray there, draw another little circle and then that has
there been a woman in your life who exemplified being authentic?
(24:43):
Was there someone in your life where you you said
that this person lived an authentic life? Or is living
an authentic life? They say what they mean, they do
what they say. You know, that's a little circle off
the sunshine off that circle, off the authentic circle.
Speaker 3 (25:01):
You're still with the authentic circle. But that ray right here.
Speaker 1 (25:07):
Now, is there a woman? It's okay, go ahead to
do what you want. You got, yes, she's drawing pictures.
Speaker 3 (25:25):
Has there been a.
Speaker 1 (25:26):
Woman in your life who exemplified being authentic? Has there
been an example something you model?
Speaker 3 (25:41):
Sabrinas have an artistic ball over here.
Speaker 1 (25:52):
Okay, time we're gonna share. We're going to share now,
so let me get you a microphone in hand. Now,
I remember the microphone rules. We're going to be center
on the mic when you respond. Okay, So we're just
gonna go to go around the room. Even give me,
(26:15):
give me the word again?
Speaker 3 (26:16):
Yoko?
Speaker 2 (26:16):
What was it? Oh?
Speaker 6 (26:18):
Was it?
Speaker 3 (26:19):
Yoka?
Speaker 8 (26:20):
Who?
Speaker 3 (26:20):
Yoka?
Speaker 8 (26:21):
Who?
Speaker 3 (26:21):
Yoka?
Speaker 2 (26:22):
Who?
Speaker 3 (26:22):
Event? Okay?
Speaker 2 (26:23):
Thank you?
Speaker 3 (26:25):
So what did you guys come up with?
Speaker 8 (26:27):
Living authentically for us meant being yourself, surround yourself with
people you like and love, truth, speak out, fulfill your destiny,
reach out, courage, call out false HUDs.
Speaker 3 (26:41):
Okay? And was the example of a woman. One of
them came to us, who is in this room? And
it's Lisa call look at that? Okay.
Speaker 8 (26:53):
And there were other people that we don't know here collectively, Roya, Slehi, Missus,
Robson and Muriel who a lot of us do know.
Speaker 3 (27:03):
No, it's wonderful. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing. Groutoka.
Speaker 11 (27:09):
So we're going to respond to being a living authentically.
