Speaker 1 (00:00):
Happy Monday, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome in.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
It is Coffee and Company Field by Thornton's here on
News Radio eight forty whas Nick Coffee.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
That's me Scott Fitzgerald.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Alongside the one and only John Olden, the company man himself.
We're with you the trio. We've got no John Shannon today,
but he'll be back. He'll be back at some point.
But yeah, heck of a weekend. I had a long weekend.
I feel like I haven't been here in like a month.
It's just one day off Friday. But for some reason,
as I was pulling it into the garage, Scott, I
felt like I was coming back from some long vacation.
(00:30):
Doesn't that mean just by I mean that alone, that
feeling means I had a good weekend.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Right, That's exactly what you had.
Speaker 4 (00:36):
And it does that to you, you know, and this
becomes such your life and every morning, same time.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
All this is routine. It's just everything we run on
the clock.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
We do.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
We have our own routines. When you skip a day,
it feels like you're way off.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
I kind of feel like a rebel.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
Yeah, yeah, right, I.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Will say you all didn't warn me. I can't sleep
past six thirty. No, I mean if I stay up later,
like if I really let my hair down and stay
up till midnight when I don't have to work, I
still find myself by six thirty I've already woken up twice,
and I'm like, all right, look, just quit fighting to
just get up.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
I did that Saturday.
Speaker 4 (01:10):
I got home from the City game, sat down about
my son, got home from the Boston College game, talked
with he and his body, sat up until about one,
I guess. And then seven o'clock yesterday. Dude, I'm up
seven o'clock in the morning, walking in the neighborhood.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
Already once I'm up.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
I love it, though, Yeah, I never got up early
and been wide away because usually I'm still a sleep
I'm gonna if I'm still sleeping, I'm just gonna go
back to sleep.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
But I actually like my mornings, which which is good.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
But uh, yeah, this weekend specifically was the was the
weekend where it hit me that, yeah, the days of
just and I'm sure there'll be some exceptions, but the
days of just waking up at nine thirty am because
my kids are still sleeping, I just don't think that's
that's in the works for me, and that's that's okay.
I'm content with that. I do remember the week of
(01:57):
Tony Crue. Tony Cruise was last week before I shifted
over here. People were ragging on him about being able
to sleep in now and then have to get up
as early, and somebody made a reference to just how
early he goes to bed, and he was defending himself, like,
come on, guys, I mean sometimes, like on Fridays, I
mean I'm up till like ten. And I remember thinking, like,
oh my god, is this what I signed up for.
(02:18):
He's talking about his late wild nights, being up till
ten pm on a Friday.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
Goodness gracious.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
So I'm still staying up a little later than.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
I probably should. But it's okay, it's okay. I'm good.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
I'm happy to be back after a long weekend, and
we've got a lot to react to from the weekend.
But we do have a developing situation this morning with
then I believe the last hour, so we have an
officer involved shooting in Newburgh. LMPD is investigating in the
Newburgh area after an officer was involved in some type
of situation, some type of shooting happened just before four
am on Reg Chris Road that is near ross Set Boulevard.
(02:52):
Police confirm they're on the scene actively investigating situation unfolded
in the early morning hours and a lot of police presence.
It sounds like so in fact, you see that that's
what this is. L ANDPD did state that there's no
ongoing threat to the public, which is good to know,
but they are asking people to stay clear of that
area while they continue their investigation. So no details at
(03:14):
all as far as what led to the shooting, the
condition of anybody involved, that has yet to be released,
but we will certainly keep you updated as best we can.
But again, just within the last hour or so, there
is an LMPD officer involved shooting Newburg Road area. From
what I can tell, not any real traffic issues because
of that police presence, but of course that could always change,
(03:34):
so we'll keep you updated as best we can. So,
as I mentioned, a lot to react to from the weekend,
we'll do that throughout the morning here. But big sports
weekend for me. We were out Friday for the exhibition game.
That was a nice chance to see where you stand
if you're Louisville. I thought Kansas was just absolutely dominant
in that one, and then Scott I was worried for
(03:55):
a moment that they we're going to do it on Saturday.
They won by two touchdowns. Jeff browmin his team, and
uh that's I don't feel any different about them, but
that that that fourth quarter panic attack that I had
internally was was was a reminder that this this it
was developing to be a situation where it plays out
(04:15):
in worst case scenario, but also how it's played out
before after Brown wins a.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
Bit game, Yep, yep, yep. No right, And that's my
first thing my son told me when he got home.
He goes, we're just doing we want.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Yes, Well, he's right, because you could you could feel
the anxiousness of the fans. I was following it, like
everybody had the look on their face in the fourth
quarter when they had a drive to essentially ice it,
which they did, but visually everybody I think collectively shared
the look of please don't do this.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
Right.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
Yeah, Well, because I kept following it when I was
at the City game and I was texting my son,
what in the ag double hockey sticks is going on
over there? And he just he just sat back and
shaking his head. Yeah me to me, and I was like, dude,
I said, I hope they can pull this out.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
And they did, did they did?
Speaker 3 (05:00):
And then often Blacksburg should be a win.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
It blacks should be Yeah, I think for some and
I guess you give a bad Boston college team a
little bit of credit. Lowell's defense has been strong all year.
They found something they were able to attack and at
work they were hitting their tight end and and and
he was working for them. But yeah, you got out
of there with the win. Now you go to Blacksburg
and a chance to continue a season that could be
a special one, right. I mean the slip up to
Virginia is still a head scratcher. However, you're more than
(05:25):
made up for it by going and beating the number
two team in the country at their place the following week.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
So good stuff.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Also Indiana, I mean, they should be arrested for what
they did at UCLA.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
That was that was not nice, that was in.
Speaker 5 (05:39):
It feels so good to take a team that was
kind of a cute story of college football for the
last three weeks and completely erase all the momentum that
they had going for That was literally.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
It was a bullying was what that was.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
And then also Kentucky fought for a half against Tennessee
only to get blown out and Kentucky fans again, it's
it's it's uns repeat as far as is just asking, hey,
how can we keep doing this with Mark Stoops. But
the more big jobs that open, like LSU and now
they in fact may target I mean, they're gonna offer
Nick saving the job.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
If they don't get in, which they probably.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
Won't, they're coming after John Sumrall, who Kentucky wants, which
is just not reality. I don't know, nobody can predict
the future. But not making a move last year even
though it would have been a financially really tough to do,
how's Kentucky gonna go get? I mean again, Stoops may
end up being so bad at the end, it doesn't
matter who it is as long as it's not him exactly.
But competing for a good coach on the market right now, yikes,
(06:34):
because all the good jobs. There's so many good jobs
open and more are going to open.
Speaker 4 (06:37):
Well, look at all the money Florida through it, Lane Kiffin,
and he's like, no, I'm good.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Yeah, he seems content until LSU opened right, all right,
we got timmy new weather updates on the way as
we get this Monday started here on news Radio eight
forty whas it is five eighteen here at news Radio
eight forty whas coffee and company with you, and we
are field by Thornton's. Make sure you keep Thorton's in
mind when it comes to getting your day started, getting
your week started. They've got everything you need to stay
(07:03):
fueled for the day ahead. Again, we are fueled by Thornton.
So we'll get another update of trafficking weather for you
in just a couple of minutes. But we did start
this morning with some breaking news within the last hour
or so. There has been an officer involved shooting near
the Newburgh area. Happened just before four am and lmpd's
Emily McKinley just did a live hit for the local
(07:26):
TV stations that are there. Our partners WLKY, they they
are on site and let's see. This is what she
had to say this morning. Let me get it, let
me get it cued up here again. This is Emily
McKinley responding to the officer involved shooting that took place
just around four am this morning.
Speaker 6 (07:44):
It is what we know at this moment. It is
subject to change pending this investigation. Shortly after two am
this morning, LMPD six Division officers were dispatched to the
fifty five hundred block a Ridgecrest Road on a report
of a female who have been shot. When officers arrived
in prior to tending to the female who had been shot,
(08:06):
they were approached in the street by a male who
was holding a handgun. Officers gave commands for the male
to drop the firearm and to show his hands. The
male continued to approach the officers. At this time he
pointed his handgun in the direction of the officers. One
officer discharged his firearm, striking the male at least one time.
(08:32):
Officers then rendered medical aid to the male and to
the female shooting victim. Both were transported to University of
Louisville Hospital where they are in critical condition. Our Public
Integrity Unit is leading this investigation and there is body
warm camera video of the incident. This will be released
in ten business days. There is no public safety thread
(08:58):
at this time. All parties are accounted for in both incidents,
the original shooting as well as the officer involved shooting
and again, this underscores the dangers that police officers face
each and every day, on each and every run. We
are grateful that no officers were injured in this incident
and that no bystanders were injured as well. If anyone
(09:19):
has any information on this incident or others, we encourage
everyone to call the tip line at five cent of four. LMPD.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
Thank you so again that Emily McKinley of LMPD responding
to the officer involved situation this morning. As you heard,
there there was a I guess they appeared after reports
of some situation going on to find a woman who'd
been shot and then a man was standing with a
(09:49):
handgun nearby and was instructed to drop the gun, did not,
and there was one shot fired.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
And we'll know more.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
About the status of that the person who was shot
probably at some point, I would say, I mean, when
there's an update, I'm sure it'll be available to the
public pretty quickly. That's usually how things like this work.
But yeah, scary situation, sounds like no officers injured and
as well know, no other bystandards. But a rough way
(10:18):
to get the week started, that's for sure. Let's get
an update of tragick and weather as we move forward here. Also,
we've got a sports update coming your way. So much
to react to from the weekend. I mean, Kentucky basketball,
they had no problem with Purdue, who is the number
one team in the country, so you got to be
feeling good if you're a Kentucky hoops fan. I mean,
they didn't have Jalen Lowe obviously, Jayden Quainton still hasn't
(10:41):
hasn't been cleared to play, so we'll see. Both teams
had a nice tune up exhibition game against good competition
before they play each other, which is in a matter
of weeks, which is just crazy to say. So. Anyways,
trafficking weather updates on the way. Again, We've got a
sports update coming your way. We'll have a news update
around five to thirty right here on news radioate forty whas.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
Thank you very much, mister Crumley.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
It is five thirty five here at news Radio eight
forty whas.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
Happy Monday to you.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
Coffee and company with you and we are field by
Thornton's Take us with you wherever you go. Listen live
on the iHeartRadio app. Also listen live at whas dot
com and on the iHeartRadio app. We've got the talkback
feature presented by Alex RWHITEPLLCSU Distracted Driver dot Com. Don't
forget coming up this weekend on Saturday. If you're looking
for a party, I mean, who's not looking for a
(11:29):
party on the weekend, especially when we're celebrating Halloween weekend.
I mean, it's going to be the Rad Revival at
Paristown and just think eighties nineties, which I'm sure there
are many listening that agree that the eighties and nineties
were the two best decades. But if there are those
that don't agree, they're just wrong and that's okay, and
you'll be proven wrong if you come out and enjoy
what is going to be just a great time again.
(11:50):
It is the Rad Revival event at Paristown Arts District
this Saturday from four to ten pm.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
So it is.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
Eighties nineties themed, meaning you're encouraged to dress up. Is
if we are living in the nineteen eighties or the
nineteen nineties. There's also a car show which all vehicles
that are entered into the car show have to be
from the eighties or nineties, and they're also going to
have some really cool BMX stuff going on, And I'm
(12:17):
not real big on meaning, I don't know a whole
lot about BMX, but I know they've got the ramps
set up and obviously there's going to be people that
are performing doing some really cool stuff and I can't
wait to see it. But also the First Car Project,
we've had Alex White on to discuss it, and it
is just a really cool and great thing that they do,
(12:38):
and that is giving vehicles to children that are becoming
adults and aging out of the foster care system. So
those folks that are in that situation probably don't have
the means the resources that a lot of others have
as far as just family assistants help. And if you
are aging out of the foster care system, I'd say
one of the big things you need is transportation. And
(13:00):
Alex and his group with the First Car Project, this
has now been going on for a few years now, believe,
and they're going to give away two vehicles on Saturday
to two individuals in that situation that are aging out
of foster care. And one it's just great to do that.
It's just a great cause. But also what I love
is the amount of folks that work in the automotive
(13:20):
industry in a different in a variety of different ways
from those that are body shops or they are repair
shops or dealerships in general, that once they hear about
what the first car project is, what it's all about,
that there. I mean, I'm sure it's not been without
a lot of work to get it all taken care of,
but there are many many different businesses that have stepped
(13:42):
up to donate time, to donate money, to donate resources
to help make this possible. Which I like being able
to share stories like this because it's a reminder that
there are really good people still that are that are
that are willing to do good things for other folks
that are in need. Right, I think it's infectious when
you are going from different business to different business sort
(14:05):
of telling what you're doing. It doesn't surprise me. But
it's also just great to see that that it's something
that people want to get behind and support. So again,
Rad Revival it is this this weekend Saturday from four
to ten pm at Paristown Arts District. It's completely free
to the public. By the way, I should have mentioned
that maybe I should have led with that, but if you, uh,
(14:25):
if you I was gonna say, if you're gonna enter
your into your vehicle, but they've already gotten they've already
got spots completely full. So again it is the rad
Revival event coming up on Saturday. If you're looking for
a party, you should come out. My wife and I
have secured our costumes for it. John, we uh, we
were were dressing up. We're gonna, We're gonna, We're gonna,
We're gonna do it big. It's like we're getting a
sitter too, which like that now I'm at the age
(14:47):
where when we get a sitter that means like we're
we're now required to go have a good time, which
is a big deal for you guys exactly. You know,
we we don't try to uh you know, we we
do make time for ourselves and we have we have
folks that that not only help us out, they enjoy
even our kids. Whenever we want to go do something,
but you know we don't. We don't want to burn
it up. So whenever we do, say hey, will you
give up your Saturday to watch my two rugrats while
(15:09):
we go have fun. I want to make sure we
make the most of that situation. So I'm looking forward
to it. And I hate that you didn't get to
experience the nineties. I mean you did, but you don't
remember any other.
Speaker 5 (15:17):
No, I was three years old whenever it turned over
to the year two thousand. So the all I have
is from the nineties is the music that they came,
that they gave us, and I'm glad to be able
to enjoy that still.
Speaker 2 (15:26):
This day, no doubt. Eighties nineties was was was a
fun ride. And I say the eighties like I remember it,
I don't. I was born in eighty eight. Therefore I
have no memory of it. But there's just there's a
word for it, and I can't think of what it is,
but nostalgia for something that can't be nostalgia because you
didn't actually experience it, right, Like, Yeah, eight the eighties
(15:46):
gives me something like, man, I wish I could go back,
but I wasn't around.
Speaker 1 (15:49):
So what am I? You know, what am I going
back to?
Speaker 3 (15:51):
That's really? What is the word for that?
Speaker 6 (15:53):
Now?
Speaker 7 (15:53):
Either?
Speaker 3 (15:54):
If there isn't, we need to make one up for you.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
Yeah, So I looked it up because I have it
when I when I go, when I whenever I I
see things, not even just from the eighties, but like
there's this weird like from like the sixties where like
I'll see something and be like, oh, yeah, that was
when life was good.
Speaker 3 (16:09):
I wasn't.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
I mean, my parents were barely born in that time,
so I don't know what it is. And again I
can't think of what they call it, but it's I
looked it up one time, and sure enough, like it's
a real thing that people have looked into themselves because
they're like, wait a second, this doesn't make sense. How
could I miss something that I didn't experience. So that's
the eighties and nineties, the eighties specifically for me. But
all right, let's get too a quick up day trafficking
(16:31):
weather updates on the way. We'll see how the roadways
are looking. Bobby Ellis will get us caught up there.
I do think we had an iss A situation sixty
five north at outer Loop, but it didn't appear to
be causing any backup just yet. Maybe a stalled vehicle,
but again, Bobby Ellis will get us caught up there.
And then Rory O'Neil's set to join us coming up
here at about five forty five. So stick around on
news radio eight forty whas good Monday morning, Kentucky, Enna,
(16:56):
thanks for hanging out with us here at news radio
eight forty whas.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
Let's bring him in. He's Rory O'Neil of NBC News.
Speaker 2 (17:02):
Rory, We've got Hurricane Melissa in what looks to be
maybe one of the more dangerous hurricanes in recent history.
Jamaica is believed to be in the path. What can
you tell us as far as the latest.
Speaker 7 (17:13):
Here, Yeah, Jamaica is getting lashed pretty hard right now.
The issue is that this Hurricane Melissa, now a Category
five hurricane with maximum sustained winds of one hundred and
sixty miles per hour, is not going anywhere. The latest
advisor from the National Hurricane Center shows the storm is
moving at just three miles per hour.
Speaker 3 (17:35):
That's terrified.
Speaker 7 (17:37):
Yeah, and that's the big concern. The amount of rain
could be overwhelming, obviously, but the winds for that many hours.
So if it's they say the hurricane force winds extend
thirty miles from the eye of the storm, so in
any direction you'll find hurricane force winds for thirty miles out.
It will take six hours, you know, at this three
(17:57):
hour at three mile per hour pace for this to
pass and that's one of the big issues here.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
So when it comes to the Jamaica specifically, I mean,
what do they have as far as resources plans in place.
I mean, obviously this is a everybody get the heck
out hout as quick as you can, but obviously that's
not as easy for.
Speaker 7 (18:14):
Some right parts of the island are going to be
cut off for a long time. By the way, my
math was way up for this. My point was it's
going to be twenty hours of that intense wind because
if it's six so if it's thirty miles out, if
that's the radius, the diameter is going to be sixty miles.
Speaker 3 (18:28):
So it's going to take three.
Speaker 7 (18:29):
Miles an hour and twenty hours of that kind of
intense weather over that small island.
Speaker 2 (18:34):
That sounds unheard of as far as just for it
lasting that long. That's insane.
Speaker 7 (18:38):
Yeah, it really is the slow nature of this storm
that's the worst part. Thirty miles not that big a
winfield actually, but obviously it's targeting Jamaica directly, then it's
going to be a big issue for eastern Cuba. That's
where our naval based Guantanamo Bay is located. So they're
certainly going to get rattled by this. It will still
be a major hurricane, then maybe down to a cat
(19:00):
but still, you know, right now, a five is as
high as they go one hundred and sixty miles per hour.
A storm like this is rare, and this thing is
going to do significant damage. And then you know the
Bahamas now have tropical storm warnings posted as well. That's
going to disrupt an awful lot of the cruises that
normally would be going out this time of year.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
Two Royal Nalle NBC News is our guest joining us
here on news radio eight forty whas. So, the government
still shut down and there have been some workarounds about
President Trump, but the courts are now, I guess, determining
whether the stop get funding is legal.
Speaker 8 (19:31):
What's the latest here, Well, right, the issue is, you
know President Trump has said do whatever it takes to
pay the military, and they sort of shuffled around eight
billion dollars from research and development to put it into salaries.
He can't really do that, and he's had this donor
come in, here's one hundred and thirty million dollars to
help pay the troops. Granted that's like one hundred bucks
per per member and very generous, but may not really
(19:56):
be legal. And you know a lot of times you
don't want to object to this because you're seeing service
members getting paid. Democrats are in a bind here as
they're trying to ramp up the pressure. They want some
of this pain to be felt in order to get
the Republicans to move a little bit and reopen the
debate on whether or not they should have these subsidies
for the Obamacare insurance premiums.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
Now when it comes to And I know this has
been an ongoing discussion overall, but it still seems as
if we're in the same spot, no real sign of
anything changing with this shutdown.
Speaker 7 (20:28):
You're right, twenty seven days in and not much has changed.
Both sides remain far apart. The House is not even
in session. The members are back in their districts. They've
been told not to be in Washington. So the Senate
keeps voting on the same bill. But that would only
extend the government operations through the twenty first of November,
less than a month, and we could be right back
(20:50):
here again even if Democrats were to sign on immediately.
Of course, the issues, though, are that more and more
federal workers are going without paychecks. I think this week
the air traffic controllers will miss their paycheck. There are
some possibilities of the Senate taking up legislation that would
allow for air traffic control, maybe the military, maybe law
(21:10):
enforcement to get paid. But now you'd have to call
the House back to approve that due. So that's something
that could be looking at later in the week. But
you've got the houses out and the President is in
Asia right now, so not a whole lot happening in
the next forty eight to seventy two hours.
Speaker 2 (21:24):
Yeah, I'd say most folks probably aren't expecting this thing
to end anytime soon. Which again, if it's if it's
something that hasn't impacted you just yet, I would say
you should feel you should feel blessed, but eventually it'll
If this doesn't doesn't get resolved, I think everybody's going
to feel it in some way. So crazy Tom So
Rory is always we appreciate short time this morning. Enjoyed
the rest of your day, my friend. Fact pick that
(21:44):
is Rory on Neil NBC News.
Speaker 1 (21:46):
What a pro.
Speaker 2 (21:47):
We love having Rory on each and every morning here
of NBC News. And that I mean the hurricane when
I hear the level five doesn't get any more dangerous
than that, obviously, but the slow pace in which which
this devastating storm is going to be moving is just
I mean, twenty hours of that kind of just destruction
(22:08):
is a scary, scary thing to think about. All right,
Let's get to a cookup bit of traffickan weather and
other sports updates coming up with Scott Fitzgerald right here
on news Radio eight forty whas
