Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good Monday morning. It is six oh five here at
News Radio eight forty whas coffee and company with you,
and we are fueled by Thornton's. So been a busy
morning so far today. We did get the morning started
with some breaking news just before we started at five am.
In fact, I think it was around four am where
this became news. But the situation sounds like started around

(00:20):
two am as an officer involved shooting in the Newburgh area,
where we've got still an investigation going on as you
could expect. I'm looking here at the WKY newscast in
front of me and there are still officers there on
scene investigating after again an officer involved shooting where a
woman was found shot and when they arrived on scene

(00:43):
there was a man also there had a gun and
was told to put his gun down, did not, so
the officer did strike the individual. The woman and the
man with the gun were transported to the hospital and
no injury to any bystanderds or law enforcement. But that
is that is what we know right now. And just

(01:04):
hearing Millie McKinley this morning describe this situation, and you know,
do what you do in her position when something like
that happens talk to the media. I guess the visual
for me just seeing it on the wl LKY newscast,
it does kind of put in perspective that this for
those that just think when there's an officer involves shooting

(01:24):
that well, yeah, you know, that's that's work, that's that's
their job. You're not wrong. But also it still is
a very scary and real situation and it doesn't happen
very often. You know, in our conversations we have each
week with lmpd's Dwight Mitchell, I feel like it's a
reminder of just how think of the right way to
word this. But like I think everybody knows that law

(01:46):
enforcement officers they're all humans, but there's just things that
you would never think of unless you've been in their
situation or you've or you've looked into maybe being somebody
that is in law enforcement. But I never would have
thought of this. But it also makes total sense that
the majority, I think it's the vast majority of those
that are within law enforcement patrol, they never have to

(02:07):
pull their gun in their career, and it's you know,
but you always have to be ready for whenever does happen.
You know that when you leave for work every day
and you're out and you're you're on duty, anything could happen.
I mean, and some have I'm sure situations where they
don't know why they were the ones involved, but they had,
you know, they had more situations where they had to
be in a situation like that. So again, when you're

(02:30):
in that situation as a law enforcement officer, you have
to react quickly. You're trained to make quick decisions. But
those quick decisions it's a matter of life and death
for suspects, victims in crimes, but also yourself. And these officers,
you know, they've gotten everybody's situations different, but you know,
they have families at home just like like we all do,

(02:52):
and when they leave for work, in any moment, something
could happen. They could completely change the lives of everybody,
everybody involved. But like in fact, they've confirmed no injury
to any innocent bystanders and no law enforcement officer was injured.
And again, that doesn't always happen, right when there's an
officer involved shooting, you know, sometimes it ends up being

(03:15):
fatal one way or the other, or maybe fatal for both.
You really just never know. But here is a little
more from LMPD Deputy Chief Emily McKinley.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
There is no public safety thread at this time. All
parties are accounted for in both incidents, the original shooting
as well as the officer involved shooting, and again this
underscores the dangers that police officers face each and every
day on each and every run. We are grateful that
no officers were injured in this incident, and they're known
bystanders were injured as well.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
So just the protocol here is ten days, I think,
is what she said as far as when the body
cam footage will be available. And obviously that'll give everybody
a chance if they want to kind of see how
this thing played out whenever law Enforce horseman arrived on scene.
But I know there's at least some that will see
this shooting where someone held holding a gun was shot

(04:09):
by l MPD because of the situation, which again that's
what you're trained to do to handle that situation if
you're a l MPD. But there'll be some that see
that and just automatically assume that it was excessive or
you know, did they have to do that? And it
just that that to me is like a trigger that
reminds me of, I mean, you would do the same
thing like that. It's it's there's no let me let

(04:33):
me be eat This guy's got a gun. There's clearly
somebody that's been shot. We're going to assume that he's
the one who shot the woman who may be fighting
for her life. You know, there's no well, hey, you
want to go get a cup of coffee and talk
about this.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
No.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
I mean, it's a it's a highly intense, highly stressful
situation that that you know, you're trained to to handle
it the way they seemingly handled it this morning. But again,
if not, the body cam footage will will show that,
which I'm sure ninety nine point nine percent of law
enforcement are very happy that they have those cameras on

(05:09):
their chest. And again, obviously there's times where the footage
mysteriously disappeared, and there's times where the public is happy.
But maybe maybe somebody, an individual in law enforcement, wasn't
happy because, you know, the body camera footage told on
them for doing something they shouldn't do. So there's always
going to be examples of different situations. But I mean

(05:31):
the accountable I mean, just the accountability that's there now
and the public being able to see officers firsthand, how
they encounter, what they encounter, how they handle it. It
should only help change the stigma I think that is
out there with some that that you know more often
than not it's police not doing the right thing. But

(05:51):
also if you're somebody that is in that line of work,
I mean, it gives you the ability to show that
you're you're doing it by the book and even at
times when you have have to make an arrest or
hold somebody accountable in whatever way. As a law enforcement officer,
a lot of times they try their hardest not to
get there, but people just don't get out of their
own way. So again, a scary situation this morning, but

(06:14):
sounds like overall the victim the woman that was shot,
no update yet yet on her status as well as
the man who was shot by LMPD. But when we
have updates, we will share them with you. Let's get
an update of trafficking weather. Bobby Ellis will get us
caught up on the roadways. We'll take a look at
the forecast for Matt Melosovich of WLKY, and I want

(06:35):
to talk a little bit about Friday night at the
em Center for Pack Kelsey and his team as it's
nice to have a challenge like that to kind of
see where you stand against a really good team, but
a lot to work on, no doubt. We'll talk about
it next right here on news Radio eight forty whas Man.
There was great energy and enthusiasm leading up to Friday

(06:57):
night's exhibition game for pack Kelsey and his team against
and Kansas. Just a rare, really never before type of
thing for Louisville specifically. I mean, they've never played an
exhibition game against a team quite like Kansas, because this
is a new thing where I think you didn't used
to be able to play exhibition games against Division one teams.
They had to be against teams that were below the

(07:18):
D one level, D two, maybe NAIA. So I don't
know why you wouldn't want to do it if you're
a coach, because you can get a chance to really
see where you stand against the type of competition that
you will probably face more often than not when you
get into league play. I mean Kansas, I mean their
national championship caliber program. I'm not saying that the team
they have this year is going to be that good,
but it's Kansas, let's be real. One of the best

(07:39):
programs of all time, and even in down years, they're
usually really really good. But and I still think fans
are excited about this team in this season, and there's
a lot of good, good enthusiasms surrounding Louisville hoops. But
Kansas was just the better team really from start to finish.
And I think the obvious takeaway would be the performance

(08:03):
of Mikel Brown Junior, who is probably the highest regard
I mean, I know Samarto Samuel's back in the day
was viewed as one of the top freshmen in the country,
and I'd say mckel Brown has just as much, maybe
more hype than Samarto had. I mean, that was a
long time ago, by the way, But two of fifteen
from the field, two of ten from three, four or
four from the lines. So not a good evening for

(08:27):
Brown junior. And I imagine he knows that. And I
guess one way to look at it is you would
hope that you know, there's really no scenario where he
could play worse than that. I mean, I hate to
pile on, but he didn't have a good night. And
the scenario where that's what you get all year from him,
I think is extremely unlikely, and I think it just
comes down to getting him comfortable, and he was not comfortable.

(08:51):
I think he missed his first shot and then he
just never It was kind of on tilt after that.
And the other star freshman in the matchup was Darren Peterson,
who was better than advertised twenty six points. I mean,
I think all of those came what in the first half,
So maybe the other freshman showing up and showing out
right away, maybe that added some pressure to Brown and

(09:12):
he felt it. I don't know, only he could speak
to that, but you know, the scenario where that's what
you get all year from him, I think is highly unlikely.
But elsewhere, Ryan Conwell, I mean he took had twenty
six points on seven of twenty one shooting, and I'll
just be honest with you, I thought they were a mess.
I don't think that has changed any I mean, I

(09:32):
look at this team from a personnel standpoint, and I
still feel like Pat Kelsey has one of the more
talented rosters Louisville has had in a long long time.
They've got more depth. They should be a good team.
It's just the first chance to see them in action.
It looked as if they all met that day. That
sounds like I'm piling on it, sounds like I'm being dramatic,
But I think if you just had only the context

(09:53):
of watching that team play for forty minutes, I don't
think you would say, wow, who are these guys? These
players are allowed? I think you would say, Okay, well,
hopefully they can get acclimated, because it looked as if
they just had never played together before, with the quick shots,
a lot of turnovers, and look, Kansas played a big
part in that. They were as physical of a team

(10:15):
I've seen in person in quite some time now. I
think they also exposed it weakness that Louisville may have
and we knew that going in the front court. As
far as just physicality in the front court. Losing James Scott,
he helped you out a lot there. And you have
some perimeter players, some front court players like Ali Khalifa,
who is seven foot tall, but he is far from

(10:36):
a physically imposing presence in the post. He's more he's
a rare perimeter player for a guy that's seven foot tall.
He's just different. So you know, I think going in
that was something that you'd circle and say, Okay, let's
see how we match up against really physical, big teams
because we lack a little bit in that department. And
not only did you did you get exposed there, but
it was bad. Now you got to think that case

(10:58):
and Pryor. When he's healthy and he's able to play,
he'll give you a little bit of a boost. But again,
he's also somebody that gives you good athleticism, certainly good length,
a guy who can block some shots, but he's he's
also not someone that you would consider a physical presence.
So I'm hoping that Sonny Frew will be a bigger
fixture within what they do because eighteen minutes just one

(11:19):
point not a great showing for him. So look, they
shot it really poorly from three. You got to think
that eventually, you know, they'll get a little more comfortable,
you would hope. But yeah, if you're Pat Kelsey, the
blessing here is that you really can. You know you can,
because look, when you're when you got a bunch of
brand new players, there's really no way to to to

(11:41):
grow until you find yourself in a spot where somebody
really exposes where you're vulnerable and kind of shows you
what you need to work on in Kansas. They did
exactly that. We'll talk a little more about it later on,
because there was something that I heard a lot of
fans saying on Friday, which I don't disagree with, but
I've got I think a different, a different take on
it that last year's Tennessee game reminded you of what

(12:03):
you saw against Kansas, and you're not wrong, but I
guess I look at that is more of a potential
worry than anything. But we'll get to it a little
more later on. Let's get to quick updates of traffic
and weather as we roll along here. Another sports update
coming your way with Scott Fitzgerald on News Radio eight
forty whas. It is six thirty five here on a

(12:24):
Monday morning. Thank you for hanging out with us, getting
your week started. It's news Radio eight forty whas Coffee
and Company, and we are fueled by Thornton's. Make sure
you keep Thornton's in mind, not just as you get
your day started, but really anytime, especially maybe around lunchtime
if you are looking for some delicious food and maybe
time is not on your side right you don't have
your typical one hour lunch period or whatever it may be,

(12:45):
Thornton's can get you something delicious but also quick and convenient,
and I think they're a big factor in why the
stigma of gas station food has changed. And I can't
speak for anybody by myself, but clearly it's not what
it used to be, and Thornton's is a big part
of that. And also right now, if you haven't tried

(13:06):
their pizza, they've got really good pizza and different different
options than you typically see. I mean, they've got a
chicken bacon ranch pizza slice that I've yet to try,
but I'm gonna try because it looks delicious. Also, they've
got cheesy bread with the mari and air sauce. So
that's one of the many examples of what they give
you when it comes to options with delicious food that

(13:26):
isn't something that's prepackaged that they just throw under a
heat lamp. These are people who work at Thornton's that
are that's their job is to create and h and
be in charge of fresh, high quality, delicious food that
that clearly a lot of people seem to like. If
you get in there at a certain point in the afternoon,
you'll see just how how, how how in demanded is

(13:49):
because they they're just rolling them out. I mean, they've
they've got They've got a lot of folks who probably
have Thorntons in the uh in the rotation, if you will,
when it comes to just lunch throughout the week at works.
So again we are proudly fueled by Thornton's all right,
So a major update is coming to TikTok. So the
TikTok deal has been finalized. Well, I guess it's going
to be finalized Thursday, but it's been in the works

(14:11):
for quite some time. It's been a battle to keep
TikTok up and running here in the United States, and
I really did think for a while that it would
be almost impossible because with how popular TikTok is and
just how much it's dominating the world of social media
right now, as far as just the engagement from all users,
I don't know why anybody would want to sell it.

(14:32):
And I was under the impression that the only way
we'd ever be able to use it in America is
if Byte Dance, the Chinese owner they wanted to sell
it to somebody in America, and that just didn't didn't
seem doable. But they found a way around. And what
I'm curious to see is what changes about the overall
app because what makes it special is the algorithm. Now also,

(14:56):
that's what makes it dangerous, and that's why nobody he
really objects that something needed to change because of the
information that we give TikTok with our devices. I mean,
there's a reason they're able to serve up content as
you scroll that about ninety plus percent of the time.
It is something that you're going to keep watching because

(15:18):
it's something you're interested in. The reason their algorithm is
more dominant than any others is because again, they're doing
something that shouldn't be allowed, and that's why they've had
to go through this entire song and dance of finding
somebody to Again, I'm not even exactly sure what I mean.
It's a US based joint venture. That's what it says

(15:39):
here in the report that the final agreement it established
a US It establishes a US based joint venture with
a majority of American investors and a board dominated by Americans.
So this Chinese parent company by Dance and its partners,
they're going to hold less than twenty percent ownership in
the new entity. So you've got companies like Oracle that

(16:00):
has financial stake in the restructured TikTok, But also they're
going to be a big part of I guess, making
changes to what this app can access when it comes
to our personal information. So there are many that still
don't trust this, right, they don't trust the arrangement citing
that can you know, the continued Chinese influence concerns, But

(16:23):
that to me is the biggest factors because a lot
of people don't care about this. They just want to
use the plot. They just want to use the app right,
they're entertained by it, or maybe they use it for
their livelihood. Maybe they've got a big following and they
monetize that and that's how they make a living. But
if the app just goes through a simple update that
you don't even realize, because if you're like me, and
I'm sure a lot of people do, they have their

(16:43):
phone set to just automatically update apps whenever they're available,
and then you open it up, it'll it'll. I think
you will quickly realize if you're somebody that makes TikTok
a part of your day for just a few minutes
to day, I feel like you'll be able to notice
the difference, and I wouldn't be shocked if it's a
noticeable difference that maybe turns you off, because again, the
reason it is so powerful is because it has all

(17:06):
the information that it would ever need to keep you
locked on and spend more time within the app. I mean,
when it comes to the average experience each time social
media platforms are utilized, TikTok dominates. And it's not even
a long form video content. I mean you can do
I think you can upload longer clips, but it's mostly

(17:29):
short form content and it has a longer I guess
time spent per experience, meaning anytime anybody goes to TikTok,
they spend more time there than they spend when they
go to YouTube or any other platforms. So Thursday is
whenever the deal's going to be finalized. As far as
when you actually notice or who knows, maybe you don't

(17:50):
notice a change, but I have a hard time thinking
that it won't be noticeable, and hopefully I'm wrong, right,
I don't I don't want to. I don't want to
deny that it is concerning as far as what kind
of access China has to our information, but I kind
of feel like they have all they They already have
everything on me. So if they're going to use that

(18:12):
to keep me entertained, I'm fine with that. But I'm
sure that that's a foolish way to look at it.
All right, let's get it up, bit of travick and weather.
We'll see how the roadways are looking as we get
this week started. Bobby Ellis, we'll get us caught up there.
We'll take a look at the forecast for Matt Melosa,
bitch of WLKY. So stick around right here on News
Radio eight forty. Whas Halloween week is here, as kind

(18:36):
of snuck up on me. I feel like I didn't
do as much Halloween stuff with the kids, which I'm
not really complaining. Usually there's a lot of work that
goes into that. But they're ready. We're gonna be trigger treating,
like I'm sure many of you will be. In fact,
a lot of you listening probably aren't gonna be going
door to door asking for candy. But if you've got
a kid or a grand kid, or maybe you're just
gonna be the person that isn't trigger treating, but you're

(18:57):
giving out the candy. It's to be here. So if
you've yet to purchase the the candy to give away,
you're on the clock. And if you have yet to
get a costume for your kid, also, you're on the clock.
But I would imagine by now most kids, uh, they
know what they're gonna be, and I'm curious to see which,
uh which which outfit costume becomes sort of like the

(19:18):
trendy one that I end up seeing. Here's what's likely
gonna happen, John, I'll have to ask my wife for
one of my friends, like, Hey, I've seen a bunch
of kids wearing this type of costume. What is it? Right,
it's probably like a kid thing that's gonna be the
cap Pop Demon Hunters stuff. That's what it's gonna be. Yeah,
that uh, I mean you when you when we talked
about that a couple of weeks ago, you could have

(19:39):
made that up and I would have not known as
far as just like what K Pop DVD like, I'm
I feel like I'm out of touch, But then again
maybe not right. I don't guess that that's probably the
I'm not the demo they're they're targeting. Right, it sounds
like something that like back when I was a kid,
that you would have been made fun of for liking
same here. I mean, but clearly there's a market for
it because it's believed to be the the most popular

(20:01):
Halloween themed costume that we're going to see this year
from kids. But the weather it looks like right now,
the ACU weather forecast is projecting a high of fifty
nine degrees with partly cloudy skies on Halloween here in
the Louisville area. The National Weather Service predicts a chance
of showers in the days leading up, but it doesn't
look as if right now there's an expectation of rain.

(20:23):
So let's fingers crossed that we don't get any any rain.
Because a high of fifty nine and then you mix
in rain, I mean that that that'll that'll put a
real uh, that'll put a real buzzkill, I think to
the to the treating experience for a lot of people.
I'm sure some will go regardless because you know, they're
just built for it. But fifty nine and no wind

(20:46):
and no rain much different than fifty nine with rain,
and when in fact, I feel like this weekend was
a really good reminder of these temperatures when you're when
you're really in the in the thick of it. With
full weather, when the sun's not out and the wind
is whipping, it can drastically change what you know. Low sixties,

(21:06):
upper fifties. Actually feels like I was a little worried
that the crowd would be would be less than for
Louisville football on Saturday because of the weather, but ended
up being a pretty solid turnout, at least from my perspective.
But yeah, a little chili, especially if you were out
there with that wind hitn't you. All Right? We've got
an update of traving a weather on the way. Also
another sports update coming your way from Scott Fitzgerald. It's

(21:28):
six fifty one here at news Radio eight forty. Whas
