Speaker 1 (00:00):
So I'm sure there are many that have gone about
their everyday lives and haven't noticed or thought about. I'm
sure you're aware, but I'm sure many can exist in
their day to day without realizing or thinking about the
government being shut down. But eventually that'll change, right, Like
I would imagine if this thing really is extensive to
(00:22):
the point where we break a record as far as
just the amount of time the government is shut down,
I mean, I feel like eventually it would be something
that we'd all notice in one way or another. But again,
the government is still shut down and there doesn't appear
to be really any real end in sight. And I
keep saying this when we discuss it, that you would
(00:42):
assume that there's things constantly going on behind the scenes,
that is, if folks would just be trying on both
sides to get this resolve. But what an idiot I
am for thinking that, because there's I don't think we're
at a point right now where anybody is.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Going to be looking to concede.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
I mean that that's the last thing I would expect
right now. So maybe we should just brace for this
being something we I don't want to I don't want
to say that we remember forever, because again, it's all
there are so many people that that probably would need
to be reminded every so often that this is happening,
because they've not noticed any real impact. But day twenty
(01:19):
six of the government shut down, that is, that is
where we are. It's already currently the second longest in
US history. Both sides remain dug in, and all we
are here in America is citizens. We're just stuck in
the middle. Hopefully they can, hoping that they can, they
can get it, get it situated. But yeah, twenty it's
day twenty six, and I know they're I think the
(01:40):
for a while, the expectation as far as just the
you know the line right the the over under, I
think it was in the he was in the early twenties.
So we've we've surpassed that. And the airports, obviously you're
you're you're seeing the effect there in Newark, Boston and
LA I feel like have consistently been mentioned as the
(02:02):
airports that are seeing the biggest issues as far as
staffing shortages. But there are looks like Yes, Transportation Secretary
Sean Duffy confer more than twenty incidents involving air traffic
controller shortages just this past weekend on Saturday, So according
to flight Aware, over five hundred flights delayed nationwide just
(02:23):
on Saturday. And you've got air traffic controllers that are
working without pay, which has led to a lot of
sick days being burned up, but also leaving to go
take another job. Now, I would assume they're not. Yeah,
these are temporary jobs, so it's not like they're abandoning
their job. But I'm just curious, what the you know,
if you tell your superior that, hey, yeah I'm gonna
(02:47):
I'm gonna take some time off because I'm not getting paid.
I'm gonna go do a.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
Temporary job until this ends. Like, what type of action
could they take? Right?
Speaker 1 (02:59):
I mean, can you blame anybody who's gonna see Cause again,
the belief is that you're going to get back pay,
and you will. I mean, I don't see I mean
never say never. But the scenario where all these employees
don't eventually get paid would be I mean, would be disastrous.
But it's it's it's one thing to just know, Okay,
eventually this will be figured out and I'll be made whole.
(03:22):
But the longer it plays out and you truly are
living every day without money that you have. You know
you've worked for it. I mean I could see some
people having a very optimistic and positive mindset early on,
just wanting to get through it and hoping for the best.
But as you miss a paycheck and this thing gets
to being near a month long, I mean I could
(03:44):
easily see myself, and I know I'm not alone being
more inclined. Yeah, I'm gonna burn up those sick days
that I'm not using. I'm not feeling well, and I'll say,
in my doctor he told me that really the only
thing that might get me back on my feet will
be the government shut down. I'm coming to an end.
So yeah, I got this, I got this illness. I
mean I could see an entire department at certain places
(04:07):
just running with that because I mean, who would blame them? Now?
I guess you maybe know when you sign up for
these jobs that this could happen, but you know because
it's a rare thing. I mean, there are probably people
who've worked their entire careers in certain industries that never
had to deal with this. So yeah, it's it's it's
(04:29):
not looking like we're going to get any any end.
Of this shutdown anytime soon, which again is unfortunate because
I will admit I'm someone that i haven't had any
real day to day experiences where I'm thinking, oh, man,
can't do this or this was impacted because the government
is shut down. But the longer this lasts, the more
likely all of us will eventually be in a situation
(04:51):
like that. And I feel for those that are just
trying their best to get by and hope that it
ends sooner rather than later. But man, that level of
of helplessness and just being completely I mean, you've got
you have no control over it at all, and that
has to be stressful, frustrating.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
And just irritating.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
All right, let's get to an update of trafficking weather.
We've got Roy O'Neil set to join us coming up
at about eight thirty five. I'll talk to us about
a variety of things, including this hurricane that is currently
doing some real damage in Jamaica and one of the
more scary, dangerous hurricanes we've ever seen. So we'll talk
to worry about that coming up here shortly right here
(05:32):
on news Radio eight forty whas Good morning, Kentucky and
a Coffee and Company with you here on news Radio
eight forty WHAS and we are fueled by Thorntons. Don't
forget you could take us with you wherever you go.
Listen live on the iHeartRadio app. Also listen live at
whas dot com and our talkback feature on the iHeart
Radio app is powered by Alex Rwhite PLLC SUD Distracted
(05:53):
Driver dot Com.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
Alex and his team.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
They've got a big event coming up this weekend November
the first at par Town. It is going to be
the rad Revival Event. Awesome awesome party, think eighties and
nineties themed party where you're not required, but you are
encouraged to dress up as if we are living in
the nineteen eighties in the nineteen nineties. There's going to
be a costume contest, also a contest for the car show.
(06:17):
That's right, eighties and nineties vehicles only are going to
be in this car show and everything just about the visual.
The vibe is going to be like we are again
experiencing what I believe are the two best decades out there,
the eighties and the nineties.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
So come on out.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
Should be a lot of fun and I know the
nostalgia will be strong, especially again for those that are
big fans of the of the eighties and nineties, but
this is present about Sudistracted Driver dot Com. I'll also
have some really cool BMX bike stunts going on and
just a good time. It's free, you don't have to
(06:52):
pay any money. It's completely free to the public. So
come on out from four to ten and again the
Paristown Arts District and the First Car Project. They're going
to be given away two different vehicles to two foster
children that are aging out of foster care. Which what
a great cause this is and I love to see that.
It's been really infectious when it comes to those that
work in the automotive industry, body shops, mechanics dealerships in general,
(07:18):
that that hear what the what this is the first
Car project and they want to do some they want
to do some work on their end to help out.
So again, just a situation that you probably don't think
a whole lot about, right, somebody that is starting that
next chapter of their life, becoming an adult, no longer
being able to rely on the foster care system to
to help them to where they're not going to have
(07:40):
as easy of a time finding a vehicle to get
to job interviews, to get to college, that kind of stuff.
So Alex and his team with the first car project,
they've they've been doing this the last few years and
it's just it's a great cost. So again that that's
one of the things I'm looking forward to most is
to see the look on the faces of those who
are the winners. And I'm sure it's an understatement to
say that they're going to be very appreciated of that.
(08:00):
So again, Saturday, This Saturday, I should say, November first,
four to ten pm at Paristown Arts District. All right,
So when it comes to the overall weekend, I feel
like this was the first weekend here locally where it's
just an overload of takeaways. When it comes to the
sports side of things, obviously we're not going to get
to that right now, but I mean, both UVL and
(08:22):
UK got a chance to see their basketball teams in
action against really good teams, and of course Kentucky has
to like what they saw. They didn't even have a
fully healthy team, and yet they had no problem with Purdue,
who's ranked as the number one team in the country.
For Louisville against Kansas, not a great showing I still
don't have any real I mean, I think this team
has a chance to be really good. I think the
(08:42):
roster's talented. I think Pat Kelsey is the perfect guy
for this job. It's just in that setting, it was
a reminder that those games are valuable because you get
a chance to see something you would never be able
to replicate until you play another team that is talented
like Kansas. So I'm sure Pat Kelsey's got a lot
to take from that game, because I don't even feel
like the score was really reflective of how dominant Kansas
(09:03):
really was. They were in control for the entirety of
that game, and at times it got messy, But again,
that gives them something to work on. And I think
it's also safe to say that Kansas probably not going
to be I mean probably not going to be a
team that I don't know. Maybe I'm making it again,
it's an exhibition game. Who really knows, But I would
(09:23):
be shocked if Kansas doesn't end up being one of
the better teams once again in the Big Twelve. Maybe
a team that ends up being one of the top
ten teams in the country, which they typically are. But
I believe this was bill Selves's worst ranked team in
the preseason poll in quite some time. So again, you
never really know what to make of it. But I
would imagine the value here for Pat Kelsey is to realize, Okay,
this is something that you know, back where do you start?
(09:48):
There's a lot of things they could learn from that
as far as what they need to work on.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
All right, we've got.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
Trafficking weather coming up here right here, right now, and
also we've got a sports update coming your way, so
stick around right here on New's Radio.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
Eight forty whas.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
Yes, all right, we were putting the finishing touches on
a Monday edition of Coffee and Company Field by Thorntons.
We've got Tony Venetti and Dwight waiting and coming your
way here shortly, so you're you'll be in good hands
once we wrap it up. But I randomly saw Tony
Vannetti in the wild on Friday night.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
I didn't know you were.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
Going to be there, And sure enough we're at the
UMP Center watching Louisville Kansas in the exhibition and I
didn't notice you. I noticed your wife, Jackie, and I said,
that's it's Jackie Venetti. And then sure enough there's Tony Vanetti.
We were we were two rows behind you fans, me
Moose and and my wife, and then of course Tony
was enjoying himself.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
Not a good performance overall.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
I mean it was actually not as close as the
score indicated, but good vibes felt It felt like old times.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
Really, people are going to be shocked by this.
Speaker 4 (10:49):
But I think that's the first time I've been in
that building in like six seven years. I haven't gone
to a concert, I haven't been to a game. And
we got an invite Catholic Education Foundation and and other
friends invited us, and I was like, let's go. And
at the time I was fighting with my wife. Remodel
is you're gonna fight with your wife all the time.
So we had not spoken in hours before we left.
Speaker 1 (11:10):
You know.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
It was one of those things.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
And to be honest, I kind of like to be
a fly on the wall. You just just see you
guys screaming at each other about this.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
Remodel.
Speaker 4 (11:19):
I fell for the famous trap when she says, no, no,
you do that, you handle it, you make decisions on that.
That meant don't do anything. I'll make that decision at
the end because I did something and bought something and
she freaked out.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
Well is she is she one that will take advantage
of that and just love to hold it over your head.
Speaker 4 (11:37):
No, no, no, no. We moved on pretty quickly. But
it was a great decision to go. I thought the
environment was unbelievable. It felt like mid conference season, not
mid season, but mid conference season where we're a month
away from the end of the season.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
It was huge. How long they been doing that flames
in the middle of the court.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
Probably the last few years.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
Okay, that was pretty cool. Right after COVID that was
pretty cool.
Speaker 4 (12:00):
And Kansas as a basketball fans is ninety eighty. I
cannot remember when Kansas played Louisville at Freedom Hall or
the m Center.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
I don't remember ever any times those two have crossed passed.
How that's possible, especially considering both have been in many
deep tournament runs over the history of history of each program.
Speaker 2 (12:19):
But yet, I thought the crowd itself and.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
I don't even know what the number was, but the
environment to me was the visual was a nice sign that. Okay,
Pat Kelsey, after one year, he is getting it back
to what it used to feel like when you'd go
to games because there was good attendance last year. And look,
there'll be games when they play nobody's and people are
going to talk about where's everybody at. Well, I think
things just change. But for a game that didn't count,
(12:42):
wasn't real, And yes you did have a big time opponent.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
I thought it was a great atmosphere.
Speaker 4 (12:46):
Bill self is a Hall of Famer and he looked
like it on Friday night. There's no no slam against
Pat Kelsey as his team just wasn't ready. It's a
scrimmage and you're playing Kansas, which is loaded. But there
were a lot of storylines. It's like their super freshmen
versus our super freshmen. Their super freshmen looked amazing and
ours did not. But I like the Egyptian what's the
(13:09):
Egyptian guy's name, the big pass.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
I like him.
Speaker 1 (13:13):
He's a stunt handled He's a seven footer that that
plays like.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
A cimeter player. Yeah, I mean I like him.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
And you know, against that Kansas team that was so
big and physical, that's when you need a seven footer
to be the big.
Speaker 4 (13:28):
I counted seven back door alley oops and I was
just like, at some point you might want to block
out or put somebody.
Speaker 3 (13:36):
But no, it was not. The energy was so high
and then it just went from.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
I still think from a personnel standpoint, they've got a
team with depth, and I think they've got a lot
of talent compared to what we've had in previous years.
But it's it's all brand new and you got to
find some identified roles and you really don't even know
where to start. And when it comes to doing that,
until you get challenged, Ka Kansas team is going to
I think.
Speaker 4 (14:01):
Simple one mistake. I think simple one mistake was it
was Kansas let his starting five or six get into
a rhythm.
Speaker 2 (14:08):
Oh yeah, he had an identified and aster.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
Correct and and Pat Kelsey what you're supposed to do
with with scrimmages is he was rotating guys in like
a revolving There was anybody, it was a different five
three minutes or four minutes into the game, So he
was rotating in. Louisville could not get into a rhythm.
We're all going back to our sports stays here. Yes,
the Louisville could not get into a rhythm because he
was rotating guys in really fast. And Bill self was like, no,
(14:33):
this is my six or seven and that's who I'm playing.
Speaker 1 (14:35):
And look, offensive freedom is what Pat Kelsey's gonna always
want to have and try to build rosters with guys
that can can create, can take shots. But there's something
to be said whenever the opposing team is totally fine
with you doing that because they feel like, Okay, we've
got guys, I dare you go make a play. We've
got guys that we feel like they can contain that.
There's no way to say this without it sounding over
(14:57):
the top in super negative.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
I just but I think this is the best way
to describe it.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
If I told you all of those Louisville players met
that day and played for the first time, I think
you believe me. And again that sounds like I'm being
over dramatic, but it just clearly they've never been in
a situation where they were tested like a Kansas team
is going to do that. As far as talent, and
as you just said, a lot of five in five
out situations.
Speaker 4 (15:19):
Well and I've never seen a five stars type player
play as bad as that in their first game. But
I'll use an analogy to keep myself positive, which is
every great quarterback that we've ever had at U OFL
through an interception their very first pass, and then they
become the best ever. So if that's his worst game ever,
I'll be happy with that great kid. He'll be fine
(15:41):
and the team will be fine.
Speaker 2 (15:42):
Yep, yep, no doubt about it. All Right, I'm out
of here.
Speaker 1 (15:45):
You've got you're in good hands, though, you got Tony
and Dwight coming your way next right here on news
Radio eight forty whas
