PLLC Sudistracted Driver dot Com. All right, so today is Mlkday,
which means no school for the kids, and I'm sure
there's a lot of you that are off work today,
so that's awesome for us. We get a comp day,
which I always enjoy those. It doesn't give me any
added vacation that you know others aren't getting. But we
have on air on today for this holiday, and there's
(00:43):
a few others throughout the year that we just get
to use whenever we want. So we're not really getting
any bonus time off, but it kind of feels like it.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
So I'm using my comp day tomorrow. Here you go.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
Perfect, couldn't work, couldn't have worked out bad?
Speaker 2 (00:57):
Absolutely, So we've got.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
A national championship game to Indiana and Miami. And I
don't know if you guys are into sports betting. If
you are, you should be doing it with our friends
at DraftKings. But right now, as we are still many
hours away from kicking this thing off, Indiana currently seven
and a half point favorites in that game, so sort
of a yeah, I get it, But also if they
(01:19):
win by twenty seven, is anybody going to be shocked? Really?
Miami's the ultimate question mark here. I think we know
Indiana is gonna do what they've been doing all year.
They're consistent, They're a well oiled machine. They don't get
in their own way. Miami has been a team that
really all throughout the season was good. And everybody brings
up the fact that they lost to Miami and they
(01:39):
lost to SMU, which of course were upsets, and Louisville
benefited from Carson Beck throwing four or five interceptions, but
also SMU and Miami. I'm sorry, SMU and Louisville both
had objectively good seasons. Right, It wasn't as if Miami
lost to two of the worst teams in their conference.
But once Miami got to the playoff, defense has just
(02:01):
been dominant, and uh, to go into Texas A and
M and win the way they did it was ugly,
but they were when they shut them shut them down.
And then of course their win against Ohio State, they
just kind of pushed them around and bullied them, and
then obviously it was a thrilling game against Olemiss. So uh,
I think Miami's gonna come ready to play. But I
gotta be honest, I don't really have a feeling this
(02:21):
is going to be super competitive. Maybe I'm wrong because
I think Indiana would have to be a team I
don't know. Obviously, Ohio State that was a close game,
and they were some close games here and there really
a couple of them, I suppose for Indiana. But I
feel like the team we've seen so far in the
postseason from Indiana, I kind of feel like they'd have
to be uncharacteristically off if this ends up being a
(02:44):
super close game, or the Miami defense just comes out
and they and they look like the big factor in
the game, right, they look like, Okay, neither team's gonna
score a lot of points because Indiana's defense is really
good as well. But man, this Miami d they've been
able to really contain this all offensive attack for the Hoosiers. Again,
I guess that could happen. If you're thinking Miami's gonna
win or maybe even just cover, I would say that
(03:06):
would be the scenario in how you got there. But
as far as the matchup, John, you're plugged into this
more than I am as an Indiana fan. What are
the big talking points as far as how these teams
actually match up with one another? I mean, if you're
talking about the Canes, I imagine all Indiana fans are saying, Hey,
we just hope their defense isn't as scary as it's
looked at times.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Yeah. I think one of the biggest things is really
just a line of scrimmage in general. Both teams like
to run the ball a lot. Mark Fletcher's really good
for Miami. Indiana has kind of a duo running back
attack with Roman Hemby and Kaylon Black. Whoever wins that
battle is probably gonna have the early upper hand, and
then I think it's going to come down and just
who makes the least amount of mistakes as well. I
know Carson Beck you mentioned he's liable to throw interceptions
(03:46):
from time to time for Nano Mendoza doesn't make a
ton of mistakes, So I think that's really going to
be the two storylines you watch night when it comes
down to who ends up winning this game.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
Yeah, Malachai Toni for Miami is also just a hey,
if he gets in space, nobody's going to be shocked
he's gone, just because of how talented he is. But
he also has one of the craziest stat lines of
the year. This is according to Pro Football Focus, he's
been targeted one hundred and six times with zero drops
on catchable passes. I mean, that's that's insane. Wild. Again,
(04:15):
that was going into the postseason, so maybe that's but
still that's just a it's a stat you don't see,
you don't see very often. And of course Indiana they
would be the In fact, this is the first time
and I'll get the year, but the last time a
team won a national championship for the first time in
college football was when Steve Spurrier won one at Florida.
(04:35):
That was a long time ago.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
He was ninety six.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
Yes, so yeah, you weren't even born then, and is
that correct?
Speaker 2 (04:41):
That's correct?
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Okay, So but this is I think the first time,
not since then, but it's been so long since the
team has played for one that hasn't won, when it
might have been Oregon who played for one. But yeah,
with the Ohio State, I believe the Hoosiers they're deserving
favorites tonight. And one thing we talked about earlier that
I'm really interested to see is the crowd. This is
(05:04):
in Miami, this is in their home stadium. But Indiana fans,
I think they're going to outnumber the Canes, which I
wouldn't I wouldn't necessarily say that that's like the most
shocking thing ever, because again, I think you have to
understand how many fans, just the pure number of fans
Indiana has compared to Miami. Miami's what the fifth most
popular thing going in their own city because it's a
pro sports town and there's Florida fans there as well.
(05:28):
But if you are in your home stadium. John made
this point to me earlier, if you're in your home
stadium and you're outnumbered, I'd rather be at a neutral
site and be outnumbered than be outnumbered in my own
home stadium because that could cause some type of psychological
element that could rattle you a little bit. But there'll
be a bunch of hoo's your fans there, that's for sure.
All right, quick, tom Ap will come back on the
(05:48):
other side after we get you caught up on traffic
and weather. Let you hear some of the notable quotes
from Martin Luther King and some interesting facts you may
not know about MLK. So stick around. It's News Radio
eight forty. Whas the third Monday in January every year
is observed for Martin Luther King Junior Day MLK Day,
(06:08):
So happy MLK DA to everybody. So this was first
federally observed as a holiday in nineteen eighty six, something
that I did not know, but certainly surprising that all
fifty states didn't fully recognize this until the year two thousand. Also,
let me give you something else that you may not
know about doctor King. Obviously, he's known for being a
(06:32):
very good public speaker, at least in my mind. He's
had some powerful speeches throughout his lifetime that many of
them today, some people I'm sure can recite them word
for word. But during seminary he got a c in
public speaking that was as great, so I think he
was able to overcome that c which is essentially an average, right,
(06:54):
that's an average grade a C. But outside the classroom
he certainly excelled. Here is Martin Luther King. This was
let me make sure I've got the date right here. Yes,
so this was wow. Just twenty four hours before he
was assassinated in Memphis, he gave his famous mountaintop speech.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got
some difficult things to hand. What it really doesn't matter
with me now, because I've been to the mountain top.
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
So a lot of a lot of you are off
work today if you have if you work in certain industries.
But you've got banks that'll that will be will be
closed today, banks and credit unions. And then also most
of schools are are out at least I believe that's
the case. I guess there could be maybe some private schools,
but I believe most schools are not in session today
(07:50):
because of the holiday. And then also no mail, and
I think I know around here at least the provider
that I have trash won't come today. So sanitation workers
usually have this as a holiday as well. So happy
MLKA day everybody. All right, Let's get to an update
on the roadways. Speaking of the roadways should be a
lighter look as far as you know who's out and
(08:14):
about today, because hey, some people are off work, out
of school. One thing that I definitely didn't realize until
you saw it firsthand that with the amount of people
that of course either go to school, have kids in school,
or work for JCPS, when JCPS is not in school,
it is a very visible note is a noticeable difference
when it comes to just the amount of people that
are out and about in the morning. So again we'll
(08:35):
get you caught up on traffic and also get to
another sports update coming up here in just a few minutes.
It's news Radio eight forty whas Good Monday morning. It
is News Radio eight forty whas coffee and company with you,
and we are fueled by Thornton's make sure if you
are not signed up to become a member, well, if
you're not signed up to be a member, you should
sign up to become a member of the Refreshing Awards
(08:56):
program at Thornton. She'll save money at the pump every
time you fill up, and you've got a chance to
save up to twenty cents off per gallon. So take advantage,
you'd be foolish not to all right, So MLK Day. Also,
it is Dolly Parton's eightieth birthday, So happy birthday to Dolly.
I feel like she's got to be one of the
most universally beloved celebrities ever. I mean, I don't know,
(09:20):
if I guess, if I looked hard enough, I may
be able to find somebody who's anti Dolly Parton. But
she just seems to be insanely likable. And yeah, she's
now celebrating eighty years with us, and I'm trying to
think of really what was her again? Like, does she
have a prime? Did she ever leave her prime? Is
(09:41):
she's still in her prime at eighty years old. So
she has written over three thousand songs, which's got to
be a record, right. In fact, speaking of records, she
has eleven Guinness World Records, including seven decades with top
twenty hits and twenty five No. Number One country songs.
(10:01):
So shout out to Dolly Parton on her eightieth birthday.
Eighties a long time. Here's to hoping she's around for
many more. I've been as poor as anybody could be,
so I had everything to gain, nothing to lose, So
I just kind of work without fear because it's fun
for me. It's like, if I fail, it's no big deal.
If something don't work out, I'm not afraid of failure
because to me, I never feel like a loser. You know,
(10:23):
even when I've lost, I still, you know, I feel
like I'm winning because I'm I'm earning some sort of
you know, experience as something. Yeah, So as far as
trying to put I don't want to present it as
if why is she so likable? Who would like her?
I mean, I find I find her likable as well,
but I guess more than it's just that she seems
to have figured out something that a lot of people
(10:45):
don't realize when they've got fame, that you can be
wildly successful without being condescending disconne I mean, she just
seems very very genuine and look eighty years if if
she wasn't who she portrays to be, we know by
now right, I mean, she's been pretty consistent for for
a long long time. So shout out to Dolly Parton.
(11:07):
All right, this is something that I will admit I
would have never noticed. But thanks to our partners at WK,
why they're doing a story on it, and I want
to share it with you because I'm probably not alone
as far as just assuming that you know something that's
set up at a business is legit. So I'm sure
if you go to many of the shopping centers that
we have here in Louisville, you may see those bins
(11:30):
that are there for you to donate clothes, unwanted clothes, shoes,
that kind of stuff. I'm sure you've seen them. You
may be looking at one right now. Well, apparently a
lot of those in the city are illegal and they're
not legit. So there are city officials in Valley Station
that are that are warning people like, hey, be careful
(11:52):
where you drop off clothes because there's a certain way
in which you have to go about getting a bin
that is up for donation. And just the pure numbers
I mean you've got. Yeah, So there's fewer than ten
of those bins in Louisville that are currently permitted in legit.
There's way more than ten, I mean, so a lot
(12:14):
of them are not are not real. And I would
just never assume that somebody would set up a fake
donation bin and get hopefully because my thought is who
benefits from that? I mean I guess you're taking what
people are donating and you're using it to like resell.
I guess that would be a way that you would actually,
you know, make money. But Metro Councilwoman Crystal bast says
(12:36):
that many of the bins have been set up without
permission from property owners, and they violate a city ordinance
that requires a permit. So I've seen count I mean,
I don't pay, It's not like I'm out here looking
for them, but they're pretty noticeable because they they you know,
they stand out, and I think most of us are
just wired to think, Okay, well that's that's there for
a good cause. That's somebody who's put that there, because
(12:58):
it's an organization that is trying to you know, collect
things that people can donate for those that are in need.
But when I saw that there's fewer than ten in
the entire city of Louis that are actually legit, this
is apparently a widespread situation. So you've got people just
going up and setting up without anybody. I'm curious though,
(13:20):
if you see one of those being set up and like,
you're not the landlord, because again, a lot of these
a lot of these buildings like the property itself, the
shopping centers, they're owned by corporations to where sure they've
got a landlord and people that oversee it, But it
wouldn't shock me that somebody could come in and set
one of those bins up without anybody questioning it, because
again that's not something I think a lot of us
(13:40):
are naturally going to question somebody setting up something for
people to donate. So code enforcement is now investigating and
removing those bins that are there illegally. But again I'm
just thinking of if you're gonna if this is your scam,
if this is how you're going to, you know, be
a fraudster, Like what's your what's your end goal? I
(14:02):
guess to get free product. I guess people would donate
things that, like you would know, might have a resell value.
I don't know, but again, be advised when you look,
make sure you see like if it's actually got a
legitimate business name, because if it's just got nothing, or
(14:22):
if it's got like a phone number and then nothing else,
you'll pay attention to which ben you're using, because again
just a by pure numbers, many of them that you
see in Louisville clearly or not legit. All right, let's
get to a quick update of traffick in weather. We'll
keep it rolling along. It's news rady to eight forty.
Whas I know this has come up at least a
few times over the last few months. I'm somebody that
(14:43):
just is. I'm not against it, It's just I've never
had the instincts to, hey, I need to eat. Let
let me get out my door dash app or Uber eats.
But I'm clearly I'm clearly in the minority because it's
become a very very popular way for folks to feed themselves.
Have somebody bring it to you. So five point seven
million orders were placed on door dash last year for
(15:07):
the Super Bowl. I mean I would again, I don't
think of it at home when I'm hungry. I certainly
wouldn't think of it for Super Bowl, but hey, it works,
why not? So? Super Bowl Sunday was the number one
day last year for chicken wing orders. Americans play six
hundred and thirty nine thousand of them, nearly twenty five
(15:28):
percent more than any other day in twenty twenty five.
So pizza was second. But if you're getting pizza ordered,
that's door dash. How I guess there are places that
offer pizza on the menu, but it's not necessarily a
pizza chain. So maybe that's how that maybe that's how
that would make sense. But again I order pizza. We
(15:49):
actually ordered pizza over the weekend, but I I would
never think to door dash something like that. Yeah, so
chicken wing's the most ordered dish in the classic Buffalo
flavor was the top choice, and outside of wings and pizza,
I mean outside of that, it was I guess, just
a mixture of a different rant, you know, appetizer type food,
(16:11):
which again I don't have any like when you think
Super Bowl, John, do you think of a food.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
Specific. Wings and pizza is pretty common.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
I feel like I will say any of the Super
Bowl parties I've been to over the years, it's it's
usually a lot of people just like continuously snacking on
different appetizer type items that are that are like dips, wings,
which I guess wings can be a meal too. But uh, yeah,
it is certainly a big day for eaters out there,
and I'm looking forward to it just like everybody else.
(16:41):
But there's never been one specific type of food that like,
here we go, the Super Bowls coming up in a
few days, I can't wait to eat this or that.
But I'm pretty you know, as I've said before, I've
got the palette of a toddler, chicken, pizza, burgers. That's
kind of it's kind of my uh, it's kind of
my lane. All right, We've got more to get to
when it comes to tonight's national championship game. I still
(17:03):
think Kurt Signetti is, without question the storyline of college
football right now, and obviously his team's got a chance
to win a national championship tonight. But you gotta wonder,
is this, and this is probably not something any Indiana
fans are worried about, especially in the moment, but how
does he top his first two years if he wins
(17:25):
a national championship, which he probably will today, that's the expectation.
I mean, maybe he does keep it going and they
win a bunch consecutively. But you got a thing like, man,
he set the ball really really high right out of
the gate, and look, that's not a problem. That's a
good thing. So again, we'll talk more about tonight's big
time national championship matchup and a lot more stick with us.
We'll get you caught up on Traffick and weather right here,
(17:46):
right now at news radio eight to forty whas
