Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's a six. It is News Radio eight forty whas,
thank you for hanging out with us. It's Coffee and
Company with you, and we are fielded by Thornton's. We've
got the full crew here today, myself, Nick Coffee, the
Company man, John Alden, John Shannon alongside. And then we
will have another sports update coming your way in about
twenty minutes or so. It is a National Championship Game
Day edition of Coffee and Company the Canes and the

(00:22):
Hoosiers tonight, and that'll put the end of the college
football season where one team will be able to claim
a national title for Indiana, the first ever and of
course from Miami, the first in a long long time.
Also MLK Day, so a lot of folks off work,
kids out of school, and it is and I've been
given some interesting facts about this this holiday throughout the

(00:45):
morning here, because I'm sure there's certain things that maybe
you wouldn't you wouldn't realize. How about the uh, how
about the fact that he's the only Martin Luther King
Junior is the only Yeah, so he's the only non
president to have an actual federal holiday named after him.
How about that? Also, something we mentioned earlier He's known

(01:08):
for some pretty powerful speeches that he's given throughout times
in his life. However, when he was in seminary, he
actually got a c in public speaking. Also, this is
a story I did not have any familiarity with, But
in nineteen ninety voters rejected the MLK holiday in Arizona,

(01:28):
and what I guess had them move on from that
was the NFL. The NFL responded with leverage, threatening to
move the Super Bowl out of the state, and voter's
reversed course in the holiday past. Now, the last state
to hold out that didn't recognize MLK Day as it
paid holiday for all state employees was South Carolina and

(01:49):
that was in two thousand. So since two thousand it's
been observed by every state in America. But a happy Mlkday.
Here is Martin Luther King Junior, after he was awarded
the Nobel Peace Prize.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
I accept this award on behalf of a civil rights
movement which is moving with determination and a majestic scorn
for risk and danger to establish a reign of freedom
and a rule of justice. I refuse to accept the
view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless

(02:29):
midnight of racism and war.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
Again, that was right after winning the Nobel Peace Prize,
and of course he donated dedicated all of that to
the causes that he was of course so adamant on.
So again, Happy MLK Day everybody, all right. So something
else we did discuss a little bit early on. If
you're just now joining us, there's another update to what

(02:53):
is just an awful story that I'm sure you probably
have seen the coverage of it. But two young children,
a one year old and a two year old who
were abused in a despicable way by their parents. And
now we know that their grandmother has also been charged.
So Yvonne Shanks, she is the forty nine year old

(03:14):
grandmother of the two young children. And yeah, there's a
two year old and a one year old. And just
the nature of these injuries possible fractures to the jaw
in school trauma to the nose and mouth, lacerations above
both eyes, severe anemia from blood loss, possible bleeding inside
the skull, signs of liver injury, extreme malnourishment, that is

(03:38):
the one year old and the two year old. These
are the injuries. School in rip fractures, extensive bruisings, severe anemia,
organ injuries involving the liver and pancreas, missing teeth, severe malnourishment.
I mean, just torture seemingly to two babies. And I
don't know how this can happen, Like, I don't understand,

(03:59):
I'll never understand how anybody could do things like this.
But the grandmother is now being charged because she was
aware that this was going on and did confirm throughout
the interview with law enforcement that she didn't do anything
about it. I mean, I don't know how inhumane for

(04:21):
anybody to not do anything about it, let alone the grandmother. Right,
It's one thing if like you hear about it, you
leave it alone. You just you know, you don't want to.
You just feel like, okay, it's not my place, which
again I can't relate to that either. But this is
the grandmother of these two babies. So just a disgusting,
incomprehensible situation there. And I will say it was nice

(04:44):
to see Chief Humphrey say what a lot of us
are thinking. And I don't know, maybe I'm wrong, you know,
maybe maybe many in his position, right, the police chief
of the biggest law enforcement entity in our state, maybe
many would say what he said, But I don't know.
I feel like we've become politically correct in a way

(05:06):
that you wouldn't hear it. But he's right, and I'm
gonna make sure I get the quote right because I
don't want to misquote him. But when talking to WDRB
Chief Humphrey expressing outrages the injuries, quote, there's a special
place in Hell for people like that. Yeah, he's right.
In fact, is there a place worse than Hell? That's where?
That's where these people belong? Can we ship them there?

(05:29):
I know that sounds extreme, but just any type of
child abuse is despicable and obviously you should be held accountable.
But these injuries that these babies have is just unreal.
All right, let's get to a quick update of traffic.
We'll see how we're looking on the roadways this Monday morning.
Bobby Ellis will get us caught up there. And also

(05:51):
we're gonna look at the forecast. I'm gonna go ahead
and give you a little bit of a preview. It's
gonna be cold today, so be prepared. Also, keep it
locked right here at news Radio eight forty whas coffee
and company with you at news Radio eight forty whas
and we are fueled by Thorntons. Thank you for hanging
out with us. There's a new TikTok trend that's going
viral and it is U excuse me, I don't know

(06:14):
what the heck that was, and I realized it was
coming from my end. Whoop. See. Anyways, there's a new
TikTok trend going viral and it's showing people tethering their
cell phones to one place and treating it like it's
a landline. And it also led to the realization that
your kids can be I don't know, not little kids

(06:36):
and not be real familiar with a landline phone in
their home. I would imagine most kids that are you know,
I don't know, seven and older, if they see a
landline phone, like they know what it is, right because
they're at schools, they're at businesses. They may not be
in your house, but like obviously they still exist in

(06:57):
a lot of places that a kid may be, especially
like at a school, like I'm sure they see the
phone that is in the off in the classroom, the
phones that are in the office. But I remember this
reminded me of the first time we took our daughter
to a hotel room and this was I don't know,
she was probably maybe around a year old, and she

(07:18):
would not stop, like pushing the buttons, and she was
just so fascinated by the phone that's between the two
beds in the hotel. And then I realized, she's never
seen that before, she doesn't know what that is, and
it made total sense for her to be fascinated by it.
And that So Mike, my daughter's ten, she'll be ten
in February, and multiple years like long before she was

(07:44):
actually born. Like I don't think, in fact, now that
I think about it, I'm not sure I've had a
landline phone since I moved out of my parents' house.
Did anything become more I guess unnecessary maybe not an necessary,
but like you don't have to have it, and of
course if you have it, you have to pay for it.

(08:04):
So like when we moved into apartment, I remember thinking, yeah,
I don't I don't need. I mean, we have cell phone,
I don't I don't need. Here's what it was at
that time. We're we're not trying to add any expenses
we don't need because we're moving out for the first time,
having to pay rent at nineteen twenty years old, so
we didn't really feel like it was a real need
for us, and certainly we'd save money, and then over
time it just became less of something you would consider

(08:28):
that you actually have to have. Also, I remember we
we went this was this was our last this is
our last office, the where we where we were before
we made the move to four Street Live. Do you
remember the vending machine in the break room there, John,
I do how it was and I'm not sure if
it was like a fancy one, but it had a
lot of lights and it was it was never stocked, yeah,

(08:51):
at least towards the end. And like when you had
when you when there was a when it wouldn't when
it was only taking card and not change like something
would flash to let you know. And I just remember
my kids seeing that for the first time, is if
like it was the coolest thing in the world. And
it just reminded me, Oh, yeah, that would be pretty
cool to a baby who has never seen something like
that before. So yeah, show your kids a landline phone

(09:15):
or put one. Let's do this, like put one in
your house, not really, but like set one up as
if you're actually going to get somebody to come out
and give you guys a landline, and like, tell your
kids that's how you're going to communicate now, and see
if they believe you. They probably won't. They'll know that
would make it would make no sense. But I can
still remember the landline numbers that I used often when
I was a little kid. I remember my mom's work number.

(09:38):
I remember, of course, my home number. I remember my
grandparents' number. I remember I got three friends I'm still
really really close to to this day, been close with
them for over thirty years, and I remember their home
phone number because that's the only people ever called. But yeah, landlines,
I know they still exist with some people, but for
a lot of people, understandably, they don't anymore. All Right,

(10:01):
The NFL playoffs have been phenomenal thus far, and I
don't think that's going to change in these next few weeks.

All right? Traffick and weather updates are next. We'll get

(11:05):
into sports. Was mister Scott Fitzgerald and Rory O'Neil's gonna
stop by at around eight thirty five. We'll talk about
what's going on in Minneapolis as there could be some
some Well, we'll just we'll get there when we get
there with Rory, because it sounds as if Donald Trump's
gonna send more reinforcements, if you will, into Minneapolis. But
obviously that's not something that they're necessarily asking for in Minneapolis.

(11:27):
We'll get to it with Rory. Stick around, It's news
ready to eight forty whas all right, final segment for
US here on MLKDA. Then we hand it off to
Tony Venetti and Duyle Whitten. So, Tony, National Championship game today,
you have been You've been around a lot longer than
I am. You're not an old man, but you're older
than me. I mean Indiana football. Let's go back. You

(11:50):
know twenty years. When if I said Indiana football to
Tony Vinetti in the year two thousand and six, I
mean you would probably think, like, why would you why
would you even bring them up? They're not relevant now
playing for a national championship.

Speaker 3 (12:01):
Well you would know this because you did the same
show I did.

Speaker 1 (12:04):
You're welcome, so thank you very much.

Speaker 3 (12:08):
Every once every couple of years, I would I would
make an effort to include IU sports in the conversation.

Speaker 1 (12:17):
Right, So makes sense, right that a couple of years,
I'm like.

Speaker 3 (12:21):
Okay, let's talk. Let's let's include Indiana basketball, Indie, let's
include Indiana basketball in the conversation. It would never have
occurred to me to throwing it Indiana football to the conversation, right,
So that would last a couple of weeks. You could
feel it was not getting anywhere, and we'd eliminate Indiana.

Speaker 1 (12:43):
A lot of traction.

Speaker 3 (12:44):
That's exactly right. So you know what I'm talking about,
because you did a sports show three hours a day
like I did, so I eliminated it. That's that's where
perspective is in this town. And now it's the opposite.
And their story is like a Disney store. It is.
It's not supposed to be happening. A bunch of three
stars are going and they literally are the Hoosiers movie

(13:09):
right where the kid looks up, you know, and the
last thing he says is, let's let's win this thing
for all the small schools and I'll never get here.

Speaker 1 (13:19):
Well, and the coach as well, I mean he because
he's the you know, he's he's the catalyst. Seemingly he's
the he put it all together, you can and it's
so corny to say, but I tell you what, Like
you can tell they play on the field like their
coach by the Kurt Signetti that we see and here
at every opportunity. And I'm going to share this clip
that you shared yesterday. I thought it was spot on

(13:40):
and a real reminder that this team is really hard
enough to like. But Holly Rowe, she described the the
practice as I guess yesterday it was that, you know,
I'm sorry. Saturday, they had their last I guess full
team practice together, and here's her describing what that was like.
And again, this is something that I think typically would
would seem corny. Maybe you'll see it that way. But

(14:01):
like as I've watched Indiana this year and especially in
the postseason, like it all seems very much genuine, and
I think it's hard to not like these guys.

Speaker 4 (14:08):
Okay, I'm a little emotional about something. I am just
walking off the practice field where Indiana has just finished
their practice. I'm sorry, my here's crazy. After practice ends,
all the players start going up to each other, I'm
gonna cry and just hug each other, and they're just like,
I love you, nian, I love you so much. This

(14:31):
is our last practice ever together, and this ski me map,
and they are so emotional with each other and loving
and honoring and supporting each other, and I'm like, you
just cannot make this up. There is something super special
about this team.

Speaker 1 (14:47):
You feel it.

Speaker 4 (14:48):
I don't know if they're gonna win Monday, but I
can tell you this. This team loves each other. They're
gonna play hard for each other.

Speaker 1 (14:54):
And that stuff has always mattered in sports, but I
think it's really stood out in this new world of
the portal. You can have all the money to go
buy players, you can have all the talent that came
from another team, but you got to be able to
work well together. And of all the great things Indiana
football does this year, they certainly play really well together.

Speaker 3 (15:11):
For those that said, Tony, you can't include them with
the let's win this for all the little schools that
I'll never get here because they are in the Big
ten and they get Big ten money. No, if you
understand college football, they absolutely are on the outside looking
in and they are the little brother to everybody. And
for a school like that to take a bunch of

(15:31):
three stars and destroy people all the way the big
name Nike, Oregon, Alabama and their eleven national championships, it
Ohio State. It is. They absolutely are the little brother
They are the Hoosiers of this story, and tonight I

(15:53):
think they're gonna win easily. To tell you the truth too.

Speaker 1 (15:55):
And one thing we talked about earlier is that if
you see not just a bigger presence from Indiana fans
than Miami fans in their own stadium, I'm not going
to be shocked. In fact, I wouldn't be shocked if
you see a substantially bigger presence from IU, just because
that's one thing that I will say. I think I knew,
but it really has stood out, and I think a
lot of people have learned. Indiana has a humongous fan base,

(16:18):
humongous alumni base. Yes, and when you're and of course,
college football is a much bigger sport than college basketball.
So when they're this good at this sport, I mean
that's why you see they.

Speaker 3 (16:27):
Get a lot of Northeastern kids that come down to
go to IU in Chicago. Jane Pauly did a special
on CBS Sunday Morning yesterday that Jackie and I were
just we you know, we winded it and watched it
again because she graduated from there and did this whole
story on them on and by the way, that's the
best show on television is CBS Anday Morning. It was amazing,

(16:48):
So everyone's pulled into this. You're exactly right.

Speaker 1 (16:50):
I had a buddy at the airports Saturday, flying out
not to go to Miami, but he sent me a picture.
I could not believe the amount of Indiana fans on
Saturday morning making the way to Miami. I think, unfortunately,
Miami is going to be a road team in their
own home stadium.

Speaker 3 (17:03):
Which that's what I'm hearing from fans, including Marty Book.
And we'll talk. We'll talk about what happened to Marty
Book coming up in the next break. He got jumped
and mugged. Really scary, so we'll talk about it

Speaker 1 (17:15):
All right, Tony and Dewight, they're coming your way next
right here at news Radio eight forty w h A s.
