Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning.

Speaker 2 (00:00):
I'm Tony Cruz News Radio eight forty w HS. We
have a really special guest who I've never met before,
but I'm excited to listen to this interview with mister
Timmans and Scott Fitzgerald.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
What's going on, Tony?

Speaker 3 (00:11):
I saw John Timmins on the backside and I said,
I am not missing this opportunity.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
Johnny. Like John.

Speaker 3 (00:17):
He's in his colorful coat, the era to See shirt.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
John, How are you? I am doing good.

Speaker 4 (00:21):
This is a little early in the morning for me,
since is it I just recently retired, but this is
this is good.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
I know you did. And what's behind the jacket? Today?
We got the Ear Ecstasy T shirt on? Oh I
see that. I like that. That's fine.

Speaker 4 (00:34):
That's behind the jacket. I needed something colorful, which I've
never had. I always wear black, So this is about
as colorful as you will ever see me.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Right right, He's got he does and you did mention
your ecstasy and let's talk about life for John Timmins
after Ear Ecstasy.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
What's going on? You know?

Speaker 4 (00:52):
Since the store closed in twenty and eleven and since then,
I've been working public radio w FK with a three
hour show every day, five days a week, and I
just recently semi retired. I'll be back on the air
July fifth, which is a Saturday. I'll be doing Saturday
shows for three hours, specialty show.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
I know you work with our former mel Fisher.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
Yes, and she said they couldn't keep you out of retirement.

Speaker 4 (01:20):
I was retired for about three days.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Melan I, Melan Ron and I had spent many saturdays together.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
I love them dearly, remember of my family and they're
awesome people.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
I have a question because my son, and I'll talk
to you off the air about him, because he's actually
f PK has played his two of two of his
great He's got another one coming up here next week.

Speaker 4 (01:46):
That's a great thing about FBK and public radio here.
We definitely take care of the local artists.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Yeah, so he's very excited. I can tell you that.
But how did how did VITYL come back into play?

Speaker 4 (01:59):
It's that's a good question, and I think that people
finally realized, mainly kids, that there was something of value
of actually holding a physical product, especially when it's as
large as an album is. You know, I grew up
laying between the stereo speakers and looking at the liner
notes and you know, hanging onto the cover. A lot

(02:20):
of people think that vinyl sounds a lot better than
CDs or you know, digital streaming, which is true. It
depends on your equipment though, right, and the condition of
the record. But yeah, it's made a big comeback. You know,
a lot of a lot of stores have popped up
since the vinyl resurgence. And people ask me all the time,

(02:41):
since vinyls come back, are you going to do another store?
And the answer is no. But there's reasons for that.
First of all, when I opened the store in nineteen
eighty five, I was passionate about it. I was just
that's what I wanted to do. I would not be
passionate about it right now. But that's not the main reason.
Folks that experienced what the record store was here, ecstasy

(03:05):
was more than a record store.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
It was an experience.

Speaker 4 (03:07):
But people that actually had shopped there, if I opened
another store, it would be a disappointment because it would
never live up to the memory of what you know,
why they still hang on to that store, you know.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
So so I have to ask you, John, before I
could talk to you all day, to be honest with you,
I'll be here, but I know you will if John
Timmins is by himself wanting through a record store and
he can put on the headphones and throw on some vinyl.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
What's your go to? Oh my god, do you do
you have? Do you keep one favorite? It's kind of
like asking you which who's your favorite kid? Yeah, this
is the This is a question I ask people all
the time. What do you listen to? What do you like?

Speaker 4 (03:44):
And I don't like that question. But I'm a huge
fan of Todd Rudgren, which a lot of people don't know.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
Todd the band XTC.

Speaker 4 (03:54):
Which is partially responsible for the name of the record store. Yeah,
it was going to be called uh ear XTC, and
I thought I would get sued by the band, which
I eventually talked.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
To one of the members.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
They were like, nah, we have people name their kids
after us. Yea working Yeah. But ear Ecstasy is something
other than the band. Ear Ecstasy is a Stasian you
get when music connects with you either your your head,
your heart, or your soul or all three things. People

(04:28):
will respond in different ways to that. Sometimes people say, well,
the hair stands up on the back of my neck,
you know. It just kind of gives me chills. For me,
the hair on on the arm on my arms stands up.
I get goosebumps. That is ear ecstasy.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
That's awesome.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
So if people want to get the gear that your
Ecstasy gears is still available.

Speaker 4 (04:45):
Yeah, we've got shirts and stickers available right now at
Revelie Gallery down on in Nulu and also uh.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
Grady Goods on Baxter Avenue.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
I'll tell my son because he'll probably buy twenty album
he needs.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
I've got plenty in my kitchen and rolling.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
Ahead, we're rolling back with what Scotty was saying. Simon
Lebonn I heard him on an interview and he said
that there's nothing like vinyl. If you want to hear
the way the songs that we put together, it's vinyl.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Yeah, and I'm glad. I'm glad Vinyls made a comeback.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
