Speaker 1 (00:00):
We got double d's in here.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
Man.
Speaker 3 (00:02):
The only thing we're missing is Kevin Kirsten and we got.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
Coachhe no, he can't believe me.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
He knows how. He's the most best motive, motivational speaker
I ever said I ever heard. Excuse me, by the
way I saw you do a motivational speech. My wife
had never seen you speak at a financial situation for
for Alan Mercurial, and she said, he's the best speaker
(00:36):
I've ever heard.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
Everybody knows that coach was ready to go.
Speaker 4 (00:42):
Is your wife still in treatment?
Speaker 1 (00:47):
Well, she married me.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
You know there's treatment.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
It's all right.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
We have Scottie Davenport and Doug the new coach at
Bellarman University. Doug, how are you?
Speaker 5 (00:58):
I'm wonderful. Uh, outside of basketball, it's my favorite week.
We're uh, we're we're excited to be here. Derby Christmas.
All kind of all wrapped in one, isn't.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
This is the most if you if you've been to
a Bellerman game and you watch coach and you watch
the coach.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Now, Doug, they're animated. This is the most calm I've
seen the two of these guys.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
I've definitely seen Scotty de whether it's Ballard or whether
it was Bellerman or yeah, or a U of L
coaching somebody, some kid coming off or whatever.
Speaker 4 (01:31):
They came talking about older guys that Tony was doing
Ballard eighty seven No. Eight. Learn that when I was
the JV coach Okay Ballard games for what was the
delayed broadcast?
Speaker 2 (01:49):
It was w b n A or something Channel twenty one.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Yes back really, yeah, he was doing it was fun.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
I loved it. Wow.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
So Doug, you're you're full on now you are the man.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
What's it been like for you since the announcement was made?
Speaker 5 (02:07):
Yeah, I don't know if I'm the man, but I
know it's been really busy for the last few weeks.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
We're I guess I can't publicly say it. I can.
Speaker 5 (02:13):
We had two commitments last week that we're really excited about.
I think that'll be announced in the next couple of
days officially.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
College sports are Uh.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
I was gonna say, I need to ask you guys,
because both of you and I've told you Dad this before.
You guys do it right at Bellerman back in nightshall
or it should be.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
And Yeah, we're excited about that. What's it? What's it?
Like when you go on the road and you try
to recruit kids. Now, in this day and age, it's different.
It's different, but it's not bad. It's just different, you know.
Speaker 5 (02:43):
I think, uh, well, they always say the last words
of every dying business, or you know, this is how
we've always done it, and we've got to adapt with
the times. And I think we're getting there. We we're
probably a little bit different than the highest highest level
in a since we're always gonna have to recruit high
school guys. Yeah, but last week I've been in three
(03:05):
high schools the last couple of weeks looking at juniors,
which is I think when everybody else is doing one
thing right, everybody else is spending all their time on transfers.
Right now, we felt like we had a pretty good
plan and a pretty good approach to filling our needs transfers,
and it allowed us to spend a little bit more
time familiarizing ourselves, spending more face to face time with
(03:26):
some high school juniors rising seniors. So we're hoping kind
of gives us a little edge there and we can continue.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
I don't think it's ever.
Speaker 5 (03:33):
I think we all know it's not gonna be what
it was right, but we are always going to still
We're gonna have to bring in high school guys and
try to develop and do our best to retain I.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Think that that's kind of right.
Speaker 5 (03:47):
If it's like any other market, that's kind of where
the inefficiency is.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
Scotty Scotty daving Fort, Right, where's this ain't gonna go.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
My concern it's not.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
As much where it's gonna go because you have no control.
My concern is about the kids, about the players.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
Right.
Speaker 4 (04:07):
Yeah, this NCLA census of June twenty fourth, there was
five hundred and twenty two thousand men and women athletes
in Division one two three only in the NCAA. That
doesn't include anaia or junior college. And so you know
this big picture, those are lives. And at the end
(04:28):
of the day, I worry about sports. If we're robbing
one group of athletes to pay another group of athletes
and it cost these athletes their sports or their coaches
their jobs, are their futures, I worry about that.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
We saw that remember back in the early eighties, and
Cedric Dempsey, the head of the NCAA, said this is
going to be a disaster. We started seeing gymnasts gymnastics
go away, men's gymnastics in particular, wrestling went away, you know,
for a lot of athletes. But this is a much
bigger scale. I think what you're talking about, Scott.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
Well, the money has to come from somewhere. And I'm
worried about sports and jobs. Yeah, I mean it has
to and to me, and I don't want to be
that old guy. I'm mad about and I'm not mad
about the portal. I'm worried about the young people. These
are people's lives and I think that needs to be
(05:27):
regenerated as the focus.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Well, but these are pro athletes. Patino's right, they're professional athletes.
So now this gives the universities, however they want to
do it, the right to say we're going to say
we're a sports league and then start muticating it the
way where you have salary caps and those kind of things.
I don't know what it's going to be looking like
(05:49):
or whatever, but you got to cap it.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
It's at some point.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
At some point, Tony, the people that are in charge
of making these decisions need to come forward and stand
and be accountable that.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
To this is our plan. Do you know the plan? No, Scott,
do you know what.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
No, no, it at all.
Speaker 4 (06:07):
Doug know what I don't know? We need to know
the plan.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
Yeah, that's kind of what you know.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
R Ema was saying, let's just call it what it is,
and it was a fascinating speeches.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Does this add another.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
Layer both Doug and coach to really, when you have
to try to fund an il, you gotta go out,
you gotta recruit, you gotta get the donuts, you gotta
get the money in there. Does that add another layer
to you all that takes away from maybe coaching?
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Yeah, it obviously does.
Speaker 5 (06:31):
But the reality is, like I worked my first job
in coaching.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
I was a grad assistant at Xavier under Chris Mack
was the head coach.
Speaker 5 (06:41):
Our our a d was a guy named Mike Mbinski.
He's now the AD at Purdue. He's real close with
the Broms. And mister B used to always, you know,
Xavier basketball was a huge deal, right right, so different
than it is in this city. But Xavier, you know,
now we're in the atend, but big E school and
you look at these big E schools their basketball center,
right It's It's true, and was basketball centric league the country.
(07:03):
And mister B used to always say that, like Xavier
basketball wasn't just Xavier basketball.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
We were also the face and marketing.
Speaker 5 (07:08):
Arm of the university and good boy, So maybe we're
raising money for different things. But I think, like with
my dad sitting right here next to me, probably no
face has been more visible right for the university. Like
I always kind of tell people, you know, doctor McGowan,
who we lost several years ago, But if doctor McGowan
was the face of the university, really, like men's basketball
(07:30):
is kind of the soul of it, right, and more
people probably recognized us from that side of it. And
so maybe the money's being raised for something different now.
But I do think it's part of our jobs. It's
always been part of our jobs. But you know, if
you want to talk about a fundraiser we're hosting Wednesday night,
I think we could plug that right, go ahead, go ahead.
Wednesday night, we have our fourth annual. We call it
the Davenport Derby Dash. It it helps fund the Davenport
(07:56):
Family Scholarship Foundation. Sorry that our Family Scholarship Fund. I
got in trouble for that, which helps raise money and
it covers tuition costs for our managers, which is cool.
It also helps fun Night's Court, which is the nil
arm of our basketball program.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
So we have.
Speaker 5 (08:14):
Bill Samuels and Makers Mark. They donated a barrel. We're
selling raffle tickets. If anybody is curious, I'm sure you
can find a way to get ahold of it. It's
all over our social media stuff. We have live auction
packages that are really cool. West Point donated to share
of a horse. Starlight Racing donator to share of a
two year old. Travis the race caller here at Churchill.
Travis is the mc AK is one of the handicappers Danny.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
Crone, What do you have on everybody's got?
Speaker 4 (08:40):
Brother?
Speaker 2 (08:40):
I mean you've got something on everybody but.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
The universe.
Speaker 5 (08:44):
He has a lot of ties in basketball. I think
you all know this basketball in this community. The two
things that matter more than anything else are basketball on
derby right and people to do. You will know Travis,
I don't know. Travis is like the most interesting. Do
you know what Travis does in the winter to pass
the time? He's he's an eighth region high school basketball official.
What yes, Travis balls games like Travis. So Travis helps
(09:11):
us out. He MC is the event KK who, aside
from being all things publicity at.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
Churchill is also a Bellerroom basketball super.
Speaker 5 (09:18):
Fan and alum Gabby Gaudette from fan Duel. Gabby is
married to Norm Cassie. Norm Norman played baseball, Oh my god.
And then Danny Cronin, who's mixed brother, who's half nuts,
but like we love Danny. Uh so, like all these
ties are through Bellerman and basketball, and we so in
our auctioneers a guy named Tom Biederman who worked with
Phasing Tipton forever.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
So Wednesday again, it's Wednesday evening. Yeah, it's at Ottoman
Country Club, Raffle.
Speaker 5 (09:48):
If anybody wants to get involved online silent auction, if
you have interested, we have some really cool live auction packages.
Speaker 4 (09:55):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (09:55):
We can always have a proxy in the room. Bid
on your behalf as long as we get your you know,
credit card.
Speaker 1 (09:59):
And from first. But the barrel, so we auction off
a full barrel. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (10:07):
We're always plugging, right, right, we always it's it's ABC's right.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
That's always what I learned about.
Speaker 5 (10:12):
It's always always be cruding now it's uh now, it's
always be selling right.
Speaker 4 (10:17):
How about this late itemman last week? That Percy susan
sweety crime. Oh yes, crimes cabin.
Speaker 1 (10:23):

Speaker 2 (10:27):

Lynn gives a sweet at Louse City. Yeah, Kenny McPeek won,
he bid on it last year, took it. Who did
Kenny McPeek use the sweep for the hot walkers and grooms?
Speaker 1 (11:11):
How good is that? I wanted socks? Did see the
socky ward.
Speaker 4 (11:16):
Was?
Speaker 1 (11:17):
My wife showed me before we let you both go.
What's the state of the a Sun conference?
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (11:22):
We think.
Speaker 5 (11:23):
I think there's a lot of turnover, right Like I
do think that as we continue to raise funds and
build the roster, I think retention could be kind of
the superpower here. And we were over them. Actually, three
of our guys with me this morning.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
Kenyon Gooden, who's from Shelbyville, Key.
Speaker 5 (11:45):
There you Grant Whittaker, young man from Murray, Kentucky, and
then Tyler Doyle is from Lexing and Catholic.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
All three of them are returning to us. We think
they have.
Speaker 5 (11:54):
All three of them have really bright futuresat A couple
of their teammates didn't wake up early enough to come
this morning.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
No they no, no, they were studying for Oh yeah,
that's final. That's probably what they were doing. I don't
know if I believe that. One Dad Boorn, we're studying
for final.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
Coach said, I'll tell you now, you know you know
you're not a good liar, Scottie. All right, hey guys,

Speaker 5 (12:33):

And this is based on no no ability. Nothing on
the sheet is going to show up. But Owen Almighty
was bred by my wife's family and they still on
the maryor so we've got. We've got a lot of
sentimental rooting interest on for on.
Speaker 1 (12:51):
All right, we got to wrap it up.
