Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, Joel Malcolm for w J and O dot com.

(00:02):
My election spotlight on the city of Boca ratone with
four races mayoral race March tenth, plus three city council races,
and we have Seat A is the one we're focusing
on right now. Currently that is fran Nachlas's seat, but
she has finished her term and is running for mayor,

(00:23):
so she's in that mayoral race and we covered that one.
Let's speak to one of the three candidates in the
race for ced A, Bernard Korn. Thank you for joining me,
my pleasure, Joel, and we have spoken before. I know
you have run for office in Boca ratone and a
couple of other offices as well. Right, refresh my memory.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
That's correct.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
I ran for the mayor's seat and two times, and
I also ran for council seats times.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
This is my fifth election.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
All right. I think you've run for like a federal
office too, if I remember.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
That's correct.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
Okay, all right, so let's focus on ceat A. Let's
focus on you. For those who are maybe unfamiliar with you,
give us some background on you.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
Yes, So, first of all.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
I am a dedicated politician. Where everyone denies they're not
politicians and lie because they are politicians. Once they run
for office and win, they don't want to leave.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
So the current mayor.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
Is finishing his term, and his predecessor did six terms.
But they all tell you they are not politicians. I
tell you I am a dedicated were politician that loves
the city of Boca Ratone.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
All right, so let's get some work background first. All,
how long have you been in Boca Ratone? A resident?

Speaker 2 (02:06):
I came to Boca Ratone and bought my first.

Speaker 3 (02:12):
Home in West Boca nineteen ninety nine.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
I officially moved to.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
Boca in two thousand, so I've been in both for
now twenty five years, a quarter.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
Of a century.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
You know you're aging yourself there.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
I am the oldest candidate. I am seventy one years old,
and I made a commitment that I will run for
office until the day I die. Met about fifteen years ago,
I acquired five deeds to Oka Gardens Memorial Cemetery, so

(03:04):
I am an eternal resident.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
All right, let's talk about professional experience.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
Yes, I am a since property manager. I own a
management company. We do very large scale projects, so.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
I know the ins and out of all.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
The projects going on now in Boca Ratone and Boca
Ratone is becoming overdeveloped. The projects are not doing well.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
We just had a.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
Major bankruptcy with the Mandarin Oriental, and if the council
continues on its path, there's going to be a lot
of failed projects in Voca because they don't know what
they're doing and they're all controlled by political action committees.

(04:02):
Both my opponents belong to political action committees, supported, endorsed
special interest groups.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
And lobbyists, and that's not the way to run a city.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Now. Let's yeah, you do point that out that you're
passionate about exposing city council members and those that sit
on the Planning and Zoning Board who represent lobbyists, special
interest groups, and political action committees. Would you like to
expand on it a little bit.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
Yes, they lack experience, the council members, the members that
sit on the Planning and Zoning Board, they're incompetent and
they're just irresponsible, and so they need education. I am

(04:52):
bringing a accredited real estate school that is going to
be offering certified political training courses and programs. I'm offering
these courses to all council members, planning and zoning board

(05:13):
or anyone who has any political ambitions to make Oca
Ratone a great city.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
The city is overcrowded.

Speaker 3 (05:22):
Traffic is out of control, and major change is necessary
otherwise a lot of businesses are leaving.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
People are leaving, and.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
You cannot talk to these people because they're all, you know, busy.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
You know, doing things that are not right for the
city of.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
Let's is that So you bring that school, you're saying
that you're doing that regardless of whether you win the
election or not. Correct, Okay, I didn't know if that
was a campaign problem. So I just wanted to make.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
Sure campaign promise.

Speaker 1 (06:03):
Yes, but you're going to do it whether whether you
win the election or not.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
And if I don't win, I'll prepare for the next election,
which is in twenty twenty seven.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
So let's talk about one Boca as it's called. That's
the downtown redevelopment project. There's a lot of a lot
of prongs on it. There will be a referendum on
all the Boca Ratone registered voter's ballot on March tenth.
What are your thoughts on that.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
Project. I went over it thoroughly.

Speaker 3 (06:41):
I happen to be an accredited and licensed instructor that
teaches about zoning laws, rules, regulations, statutes about planning, also
a licensed real estate broker commercial and residential.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
And I went through the project.

Speaker 3 (07:04):
And I don't like the numbers, and they keep changing
the plans and basically the Planning and Zoning Board they
just rub a stamp the project.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
They don't even look through it, they don't analyze it.

Speaker 3 (07:19):
And so in my opinion, it is a very very
poorly designed project, a ninety nine year lease that doesn't work.
So I am going to vote no deal. I do
not want that project in Boca. There are other projects
that are good, but many of the projects now being

(07:43):
developed are bad. Three four hotels and Boca Boka doesn't
need more hotels. Boca doesn't need thousands and thousands of residentses.
Where are the children going to school? We have no
plans to build a school. The infant infrastructure in Bogue

(08:06):
is its department are resigning police officers, who I love
police officers. I support the police and the military. And
the cost of living is out of control, traffic is miserable,
and they just continue to ruin the city.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
You mentioned that essentially what the city needs is more schools,
wouldn't that be the school district's job to do that,
to build schools? How does that work?

Speaker 2 (08:43):
Absolutely?

Speaker 1 (08:45):
So what is it that the city could do better
to facilitate that?

Speaker 3 (08:50):
Then, from what I understand is thirty forty fifteen projects,
Every project that comes in front of the Planning and
Zoning Board and the council is just rubber stamp. I
have to say, they don't care. They need support from

(09:13):
the builders and developers for the fellows.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
Up and coming elections.

Speaker 3 (09:20):
The mayor is already approved run for Congress. We have
another city council member that's also leaving next year, also
running for office.

Speaker 2 (09:31):
They don't care. We need to replace.

Speaker 3 (09:33):
These people with responsible individuals.

Speaker 2 (09:37):
You just can't rub a stamp.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
And I'll say the thousand times, you just can't rub
us and projects and then accept donations from them.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
Well, as it stands, because as you mentioned, two of
the current council members are running for mayor. One of
those could become mayor. There is a I believe a
third candidate in that race. We have spoken to them.
But speaking of the you know, the three actual council races,

(10:10):
even assuming the one incumbent who is running for his
own seat, wins, there would only be two, not counting
the mayor, two incumbents returning to the council. So do
you think, you know, uh, with other fresh blood in
the other seats, that things could change.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
Well, here's what's going on. Save Folka.

Speaker 3 (10:38):
As endorsed three candidates and unofficially supports off candidate on
their website. What has happened also is two of the
incumbent council members are basically teing up. So many of

(11:04):
the politicians candidates are running as a group three or more,
why so they can control the votes?

Speaker 2 (11:16):
All right?

Speaker 1 (11:17):
I want to go back to the school thing, because
I didn't really get an answer out of that. So
you're essentially blaming the city council for there not being
enough schools, but the school district you acknowledged would really
be in charge of that. So what is it that
the city council is not doing that they should be
doing to facilitate more schools.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
They should, first of.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
All, not keep proving project after the project.

Speaker 2 (11:43):
If the project af the project, it is NonStop.

Speaker 3 (11:47):
Even as we speak, they are just approving major projects.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
It's not sustainable.

Speaker 3 (11:57):
And even if the school board decides to build schools,
it takes years. I submit the council, I submit planning
and zoning board are out of control and.

Speaker 2 (12:14):
We need new blood.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
We need to change this philosophy of super over development.
It takes forever just to go from one end of
Oca to the other. It is over overly congested. And

(12:39):
this again, I repeat it, it's not sustainable.

Speaker 1 (12:44):
Bernard. How did you feel about the quantum computing company
d Wave that just announced they're going to be moving in,
providing one hundred and twenty five thousand dollars or more
per year salaries to at least one hundred employees man
out of California, relocating their headquarters to Boca ratone, the
Innovation Campus. What are your thoughts on that?

Speaker 3 (13:07):
My thoughts are how much money did that company donate
to the mayor and council. There's plenty companies that are.

Speaker 2 (13:16):
Willing to relocate to Boca.

Speaker 3 (13:19):
Why did they pick that company in particular? Any many
many companies looking for these tax abatements and these benefits.
So why was this company chosen out of so many?
I would like to see how much money they donated.

Speaker 1 (13:38):
Setting all that aside, is it not a good thing
to have high paying jobs coming to Boca, absolutely.

Speaker 3 (13:48):
But not to just target companies that donates. If the
key is here, it's a pay for playing. This is
the way it works. It's pay for play, and.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
I don't believe in that.

Speaker 3 (14:02):
Of course, for many ways to bring We have great schools,
we have great companies already here. But meanwhile the mayor
is leaving and he four terms and we have to
change the laws. So you two terms, believe in you

(14:25):
don't come back. Just like the president, we have forever
politicians in the city of.

Speaker 1 (14:34):
All Right, So three candidates in this race. My final
question for you, Bernard Korn, why are you best suited
for this job.

Speaker 3 (14:43):
I am educated, I am experienced.

Speaker 2 (14:49):
My candidates decided.

Speaker 3 (14:51):
To run at the very last minute, and they're just
joining it to further there. They don't have the necessary.

Speaker 2 (15:04):
Leadership skills that I have. They don't have the knowledge
I teach.

Speaker 3 (15:11):
One of my opponents is a lawyer, quint I teach lawyers.
I have a license to teach lawyers. One of my
opponents is a certified public accountant. I have a license
to teach accountants.

Speaker 2 (15:26):
They have a lot to learn.

Speaker 3 (15:28):
I decided two years ago to run for office. Two
years they decided a matter of weeks or months. They
have egos and they're controlled by their groups. One candidate
is controlled by the same Boca organization, and one candidate

(15:49):
is controlled by the builders and developers.

Speaker 2 (15:51):
I'm not controlled by anyone. I don't take.

Speaker 3 (15:54):
Donations, have no loyalty to anyone, accept my supporters.

Speaker 1 (16:01):
All right, well, I appreciate you joining us speaking to
the voters of Boca Ratone. Of course, once again, this
is one of four races on the ballot, so we
hope that the registered voters in Boca Ratone get out
and vote. We should remind you there is no early
voting in person for this March tenth election. That's the day.

(16:22):
If you want to do in person voting, that's the
only day you have. You can still request. As we're
speaking here on February fifth, you have until February ninth, Monday,
at five pm if you want to request a mail
ballot to be mailed to you. Bernard Corn, candidate for
Boca Raton City Council c Day. Thank you once again,

(16:42):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (16:42):
