The Kid LAROI went with his heart. After life events sparked a new wave of songwriting, the Aussie, 22, started his latest album from scratch and used tracks written from the heart -- and heartbreak -- instead. While chatting with Ryan Seacrest in-studio, the "BEFORE I FORGET" artist shared the album is indeed his most "personal" project yet.

"I was going through a lot of life stuff and I was making a bunch of music around that time and I was listening to that music and I was like this music is so much better than my album and I was like, damn, this feels more natural for me," LAROI explained, adding that aside from one track, "everything else was scrapped."

The artist shared he recorded the album over the course of 3 months.

"It came so naturally that I didn't really have to try to do anything and I think that's why I decided to scrap the album. ... It was flowing out of me," he added. "That's why music is so cool man ... for me that's the easiest way. I suck at talking out loud about stuff. ... Music is one of those things lyrically you can say what you want to say and sonically you can create a feeling and that's the most powerful thing."

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Where is my husband? That is Ray one of our
favorites one or two point seven. It's kiss FM, another
one of our favorites. I feel like I've met him
a long time ago. Now the kid Leroy is here
with it's in the studio.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
What's going on?

Speaker 3 (00:13):
What's going on?

Speaker 1 (00:15):
Good to see you and congratulations on a new album, new.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Music, Thank you very much, yeah, brand new crazy.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
For first of all, I just like want to know
what when people realize it's you, like they recognize you,
and because I mean, you don't, I don't. Do you
make a dinner reservation under the kid Leroy or do
you make it no?

Speaker 2 (00:34):
No, no, no, I usually I usually.

Speaker 3 (00:35):
Make it under a different name, under different in Yeah.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
But when people realize it's you out in the wild
or at like in and out or something, what do
they most often say to you?

Speaker 2 (00:45):
The most common thing is, damn, you're so much toller
than I thought.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
That's so true.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
I'm six foot okay, but like nobody believes that. I
say it all the time, but I think people just
don't believe it because I don't know. Apparently I look
short on the internet or something. I'm not sure it's this.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
It's no No, they lie. They lie.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
They've got me at five seven on wikiped or something,
trying to change this for years. They lie.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
That's hilarious.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
Do you spend a lot of time Do you live
here in LA? Do you spend yeah, much of your
time here?

Speaker 2 (01:15):
Yeah, I live here in Los Angeles, but I'm traveling
all the time, so sometimes I feel like I don't
even live here anymore. You know, I'm like, I kind
of nowhere out of.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
A suitcase, right right, literally, all right, So I read
all about the story behind the scenes of your new music,
which we're gonna get to.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
We're gonna play in just a little bit.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
But congratulations, thank you working hard at this. Yeah, and
as I understand it, you you've made a big move
after you'd already made some music to start over again.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
Yes, that's correct. I scrapped my whole album apart from
one song, this one song that made it on this project,
but everything else was scrap brand new.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
What runs through your body and blood to have worked
on art and music and you know, stuff that I'm
sure it's good and then just like rip it up.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
I think there was I think for me, well, I mean,
you know, I was just going through a lot of
life stuff, and I was just making a bunch of
music around that time, and then I was listening to
that music and I was like, this music is so
much better than my album. And I was just kind
of like, damn, this is like this feels more natural

(02:26):
for me. It feels more like me. There was something
about the last album that I scrapped that I was like, Damn.
I was like, these these are technically good songs, and
I think I like them, but like there's something that's
just not connecting in the same way as like the
Lost projects have for me. And and it was just
kind of one of those moments. I started making a
bunch of these new songs and then it all just

(02:46):
clicked and I was like, Okay, this feels like it
has like something about me. And it was the other
ones I felt like it could have. I don't know,
a couple of different people could have made those songs
or something. I don't know.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
Did you have to dig deeper into stuff that you
almost felt nervous about vulnerably revealing and talking about in
the lyrics and the songs.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
Is that where you had to go?

Speaker 2 (03:06):
Yeah? I mean, but it's funny because it came so
naturally that I think like I didn't really have to
I didn't really have to try to do anything. And
I think that's why I decided to scrap the album
was because it just felt so natural. Everything was coming
so like normal and natural that I was like, damn,
this is just obviously flowing out of me in a

(03:27):
way where maybe this is the better thing, and it
is definitely was so good. Thank you, thank you very much.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
You're gonna hear this to keep the way with this.
Now we're going to play a track in a second.
But at this center of a lot of this is
is a little bit of pain in the heart.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
Right sure, I guess I think so.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
I mean, heartbreak is something that is so universally common,
but I would imagine difficult to have to dive into
and relive.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
Yeah, but you know that's why music's so cool, man,
because it's like you can like really like I don't know,
for me, that's like the easiest way I suck it, like,
you know, talking out loud about stuff, especially like yeah,
you know, communication it's easier, like yeah, write your thoughts down.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
I think so.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Yeah, It's just like and music it's like one of
those things too. Like lyrically you can, you know, say
what you want to say, but even just sonically, you
get to like create a feeling, and I think that's
like the most powerful thing.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
The kid Leroy the new album Before I Forget it's
out now. He's saying in some places that I read
the stuff. It's his most personal thing he's ever made.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
Is that accurate?

Speaker 1 (04:38):
Yeah, definitely, We're gonna get very personal with this song
coming up next here at one of two point seven
Kiss FM a cold play, the kid Leroy got the
track on the way also have some free money to
pay your bills. It's kiss on Thomas and Chris Brown.
Now the kid Larroy is here. Would you like for
us to stare at you while we listen to this track?
How do you feel about it when we're all in
the same room together? Because I never know what to do?

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Uh? You know what's funny is like I was just
saying this the other day, I'm like, I kind of
my nightmare is like playing my music in front of
a room full of people.

Speaker 3 (05:08):
You want to hear? Do you want to go outside
the door?

Speaker 1 (05:13):
Because here we go, Here we go, all right, take
a listen.

Speaker 3 (05:17):
We won't stare at you. All right, please a cold
play the kid Leroy one or two point seven kids
that fam from his new album. Check it out. I mean,
it does have a vibe about that.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
That is thanks feeling. You just kind of drift away
into it in a very cool way, and it stands out. Bro,
that's a kid Leroy one of the tracks off of
his new album. But yeah, you talk about a feeling.
You really do get a sense of a feeling when
you're listening to that. I mean, I want to hug

(05:50):
you totally. After hearing that, you can hug me, you
know anytime I just it's like you hear that, I
go I want to I need to talk. Yeah, I
need to check on him. I want to see what's
up with him. I'm psyched that you have come back,
and I guess it's in hindsight it was good.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
I don't know what you made that you scrapped, but yeah,
I want to hear that too.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
I don't know if I want to hear that that
was so good into such a feeling now created that's unique.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
Thanks, man. I really appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
And you did it in a few months, right, Yeah,
I did.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
I think like three months that's wild think three months?

Speaker 3 (06:22):
Yeah, we did anybody think in your world you were crazy?

Speaker 2 (06:27):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (06:29):
I don't know if you know, I imagine a record
label or somebody going, wait what, Yeah, I didn't what.

Speaker 2 (06:33):
I don't know if you know Ron Perry, But if
you do, you should ask him how he felt when
I scrapched my entire album.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
I have a feeling he may say things we can't
put on the air. Well.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
And then I told not only did I like, was
it like, okay, there's a new album now. It's like
I was like, yo, I want to surprise drop this
in two weeks. And he was just like roy I
really like, He's like, I don't know, man, like I
don't know if this is good like for your like
you know, and and I didn't surprise drop it. And
I think he at the you know, he was obviously
I was. I was being dramatic. I just wanted to

(07:07):
put it out and be like I'm done, like I
don't you know, I'm done with this album. I'm just
onto the next thing. But it was good. I'm I'm
I'm happy that I that I that I waited it out,
and you know, we got to do these like twitch
stream things that have been really cool and got to
connect with the fans a lot more, which I think
has been really awesome. You know, it's been, it's been,
it's been great. So but I think everyone's really stoked,

(07:28):
you know, at the end of the day, like where
it all happened to land too. Even Ron I was
talking to Round the other day and he's he's just saying, man.

Speaker 1 (07:36):
You know ron Ronnie's times run pair of the CEE
of Columbia Records.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
Yeah, yeah, and and and he was he was just
saying he was really happy with the music ended up lending.
And I think that's yeah, I think it's I think
it's you know.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
You're an artist. You're allowed to be dramatic, You're allowed
to do all that kind of stuff.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
That's like, that's what you're supposed to do exactly. It's
their job to deal with it. I feel like I'm.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Always like damn, I feel like I could be way worse, Like.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
I I.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
Have some crazy stories. I'm like, I don't know, I
feel like I'm pretty sure.

Speaker 3 (08:04):
Yeah, you have to hear you everybody in the room.
That's what I noticed about you.

Speaker 1 (08:07):
You did.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
You came in and said hello to every single person
in this room, which not many people.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
Not many people do that. Who didn't do that? Isn't he.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
