So I've been working with this incredibly talented songwriter and
producer by the name of Toby Gad and he's written
hits like Big Girls Don't Cry with Fergie and all
of Me with John Legend and If I Were a
Boy by Beyonce.

It's like he's mega, mega talented musical genius. But it's
been amazing getting to work with him again.
Speaker 7 (04:40):
And we've been writing a bunch together and we collaborate
really well together.

And we did a.

Little weekend get away writing camp with two other really
talented writers, Will Jay and Emma Rosen and me Will.

Jy and Toby. One day we were just staring at
the ocean.

It was so gorgeous, and Toby had this idea to
kind of make this dancy afrobeats track and I loved it.
I was like, summer's coming up, I would love to
make a dance record.

And we decided to call it Down. And at the
time I was dating someone and so I was very
much in this.

Headspace of you know when it's like when you're first
getting to know someone and it's like hot and.

Steamy and flirty, and it's that like, you know, that's
the best feeling experience exactly. So it's kind of drawing
from all those feelings. And then Down was written in
a matter of hours.

really chill, fun vibe. I had a good time.

Nice. And when you went to your writing camp, was
that in Mexico?

That was in Mexico?

eventually have that lead up to an EP or an album.

But that is absolutely the ultimate goal.

It's my dream to create a cohesive body of work
that I'm super proud of.

establishing shots, you know, those sorts of things for sure.

For sure, Well, we'll definitely be looking for you when
that premierees. But right now, we got to play some music.

just released a new song down And I gotta imagine
releasing music independently now has got to give you a
lot more freedom, right or does it put?

I mean, I think it's a little bit of both.

Yeah, it's uh.
Speaker 7 (08:11):
It definitely is nice to have the creative freedom to
write whatever I want to write and put it out.
Speaker 6 (08:18):
As I please. And you know, if I want to
make a video, I do it.

I'm involved in the creative direction of everything, so it's
sometimes a lot of pressure and it's stressful also because
I'm like fully self funded right now, so I'm just
doing it all on my own. But you know it's
I think there's pros and cons to both.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Yeah, No, I love it. And what about what about
touring or performing anything in the works?
Speaker 6 (08:44):
Possibly not at the moment. You know, I toured had
to been like ten years ago, so it's been so
long since I've done that.
Speaker 7 (08:54):
The most recent performance I did was with Toby at
the Hotel Cafe, which is this iconic little ven and
singer songwriter venue in Hollywood, and we did Big Girls
Don't Cry Together, and I loved it. I was I
was honestly very nervous to get back on stage because
it had been so long and I felt so.

Rusty, and I was very anxious about the whole thing.
Speaker 7 (09:12):
But as soon as I got up there, I was like, Oh,
this is why I love doing this, Like this is
really fun and it was. It was so cool to
have the audience like singing along with me and to
just feel that energy like you can't really, you can't
really ever replace that, you know, it's very special.

No, you can't beat that at all. Well, I got
one more thing I want to ask you, but we

Warfare I think, which just came out recently.

He's really a super talented writer and it's like a
very dark, sexy thriller and it definitely pushed me out
of my comfort zone and it was a it was
a dramatic role for me to.

Step into, and I really enjoyed it. It was fun to
get to do something so different.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Yeah, I bet. And what about California King.
Speaker 7 (10:35):
California King was so much fun to do. I did
that a couple of years ago. Now, you know how
it goes with these indies. Sometimes you know, it's like
it's a great cast. I had a great time making it.
I think the finished product is great, but I don't
know exactly what's happening with it, so hopefully it comes
out soon. I'm just kind of just kind of waiting.

inspired this song? Tell me about it?

So I've been working with this incredibly talented songwriter and
producer by the name of Toby Gad and he's written
hits like Big Girls Don't Cry with Fergie and all
of Me with John Legend and If I Were a
Boy by Beyonce.
Speaker 6 (04:34):
It's like he's mega, mega talented musical genius. But it's
been amazing getting to work with him again.
Speaker 7 (04:40):
And we've been writing a bunch together and we collaborate
really well together.
Speaker 6 (04:43):
And we did a.
Speaker 7 (04:44):
Little weekend get away writing camp with two other really
talented writers, Will Jay and Emma Rosen and me Will.
Speaker 6 (04:51):
Jy and Toby. One day we were just staring at
the ocean.
Speaker 7 (04:55):
It was so gorgeous, and Toby had this idea to
kind of make this dancy afrobeats track and I loved it.
I was like, summer's coming up, I would love to
make a dance record.
Speaker 6 (05:06):
And we decided to call it Down. And at the
time I was dating someone and so I was very
much in this.
Speaker 7 (05:13):
Headspace of you know when it's like when you're first
getting to know someone and it's like hot and.
Speaker 6 (05:18):
Steamy and flirty, and it's that like, you know, that's
the best feeling experience exactly. So it's kind of drawing
from all those feelings. And then Down was written in
a matter of hours.
Speaker 2 (05:29):

raw right. Where'd you film that?

I filmed it in La Actually the first half of
the video is in black of white and it takes
place Toby actually let me use his house in the hills,
which is really nice of him because his house is
like gorgeous, and then we did the rest of like
a studio downtown.
Speaker 6 (06:02):
But yeah, it was really it was just like a
really chill, fun vibe. I had a good time.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
Nice. And when you went to your writing camp, was
that in Mexico?
Speaker 6 (06:13):
That was in Mexico?
Speaker 2 (06:14):
Yeah? Where'd you go? Oh write and bond like in
Ros Rino or where.
Speaker 6 (06:19):
I think I think that area.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
Yeah, Baja California. That's cool, that's cool. And now this
song is part of an album or an EP. We're
figuring it out.
Speaker 6 (06:33):
Yeah, we're figuring it out.

I think like right now, I've kind of just been
writing songs and as I love them, kind of releasing
them waterfowl style. And I think my goal is to
eventually have that lead up to an EP or an album.
But I don't think I'm I don't I think I
have enough music to put out an album quite yet.

But that is absolutely the ultimate goal.
Speaker 7 (06:53):
It's my dream to create a cohesive body of work
that I'm super proud of.
Speaker 6 (06:57):
So we're working towards that.

because I know oftentimes LA's shot Vancouver or something.

It's it was definitely shot in Vancouver.

Yeah, Oh what s not in Vancouver?

Yeah, yea Vancouver funny.

I just I just pulled that out. I don't even

Speaker 6 (07:30):
You've been in this business a long time, you know,
looking about his works.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
That's funny.

Yeah, but it was. It was really fun. The cast
is incredible, Like the sets were amazing. I was blown away.
Speaker 7 (07:40):
I think they're doing the majority of it in Vancouver
and then doing like a week in LA to get like, yeah,
establishing shots, you know, those sorts of things for sure.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
For sure, Well, we'll definitely be looking for you when
that premierees. But right now, we got to play some music.
Speaker 6 (07:55):

Mario Lopez got Victoria Justice on Zoom with me, who
just released a new song down And I gotta imagine
releasing music independently now has got to give you a
lot more freedom, right or does it put?
Speaker 6 (08:08):
I mean, I think it's a little bit of both.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
Yeah, it's uh.
Speaker 7 (08:11):
It definitely is nice to have the creative freedom to
write whatever I want to write and put it out.
Speaker 6 (08:18):
As I please. And you know, if I want to
make a video, I do it.
Speaker 7 (08:21):
I'm involved in the creative direction of everything, so it's
sometimes a lot of pressure and it's stressful also because
I'm like fully self funded right now, so I'm just
doing it all on my own. But you know it's
I think there's pros and cons to both.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Yeah, No, I love it. And what about what about
touring or performing anything in the works?
Speaker 6 (08:44):
Possibly not at the moment. You know, I toured had
to been like ten years ago, so it's been so
long since I've done that.
Speaker 7 (08:54):
The most recent performance I did was with Toby at
the Hotel Cafe, which is this iconic little ven and
singer songwriter venue in Hollywood, and we did Big Girls
Don't Cry Together, and I loved it. I was I
was honestly very nervous to get back on stage because
it had been so long and I felt so.
Speaker 6 (09:10):
Rusty, and I was very anxious about the whole thing.
Speaker 7 (09:12):
But as soon as I got up there, I was like, Oh,
this is why I love doing this, Like this is
really fun and it was. It was so cool to
have the audience like singing along with me and to
just feel that energy like you can't really, you can't
really ever replace that, you know, it's very special.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
No, you can't beat that at all. Well, I got
one more thing I want to ask you, but we

wrote The Fighter with Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale and
Ministry of the Ministry of Ungentlemanly.

Warfare I think, which just came out recently.
Speaker 7 (10:13):
He's really a super talented writer and it's like a
very dark, sexy thriller and it definitely pushed me out
of my comfort zone and it was a it was
a dramatic role for me to.
Speaker 6 (10:27):
Step into, and I really enjoyed it. It was fun to
get to do something so different.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Yeah, I bet. And what about California King.
Speaker 7 (10:35):
California King was so much fun to do. I did
that a couple of years ago. Now, you know how
it goes with these indies. Sometimes you know, it's like
it's a great cast. I had a great time making it.
I think the finished product is great, but I don't
know exactly what's happening with it, so hopefully it comes
out soon. I'm just kind of just kind of waiting.

played victim. Despite all of this, the movie is still
expected to debut at the Toronto Film Festival in September.
