Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is on with Mario.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
Lopez tebron Mario Lopez jording right now, actor, TV personality
and legendary fitness I call my man, Jake Steinfeld.
Speaker 1 (00:12):
How you doing, Jake. Wow, I'm gonna tell you Mary.
You know, we go back a long way.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
Yeah, I mean, like you know where you before kids,
And I mean I was just thinking about all the
different times that that you interviewed me, and we've done stuff,
and then you were a spokesperson for body buy Man,
you kick Dans on Home Shopping Man, you sold a
whole lot of product. But I mean, like I remember
(00:40):
one of the moments. I think we're at the grove.
I had just gotten back from running the twenty twelve
Summer Games, right, and I had the torch. I was
one of twenty two Americans that were you know, actually
chosen to do it, and I came to the grove
and we did the interview, and I mean, man, we could.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Just keep going on and on. But I'm super proud
everything you've done, man, And thank you, my friend. I'm
part of the iHeart family now.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
I love it not a little bit, and the feelings mutual.
I've always been a big fan and getting to know
you you were just as cool in person, and so
I love you. Know you're part of the family. Congratulations
on that, Hey, Jake. Before we get into all that stuff,
I just wanted to address I know you lost your
house in the Palisades fire. Is the rebuild coming along
(01:28):
or wherever is that?
Speaker 1 (01:29):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:30):
You know, listen, we are we are in my wife
Tracy and I if you remember Tracy, and we live
in Century City. Now I'm going to pan the camera
around where where we're on the thirty.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
Eighth floor, beautiful view a building called ten K where
they're building the Aman whatever that is over there, and
there's lacc and the ocean goes back that way.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
But you know what, it's not home, and it was a.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
It was a very surreal moment, Maryo. You know we
lived in that home for thirty one years.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Our four kids grew up there, you know, having your children.
I mean, what are the most important things to you
in your life? Are the little hand prints when they
made or the little pictures or the you know, report cards?
Speaker 1 (02:19):
All that burned?
Speaker 3 (02:20):
And you know, it's an interesting thing when you really
lose everything, and especially you know in this town, we're
also defined by material things, you know, and I mean
we have Ferraris melted and all the different you know,
all the stuff that made you feel like a tough guy.
(02:41):
You kind of have to look in the mirror what
it all goes away? And you got to ask yourself
the question what are you made of?
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Right? What are you really made of? And I remember
standing at well, what was my home?
Speaker 3 (02:55):
All melt melt like melted steam, and like you just
it was apocalyptic, right, And something came over me. Look,
you could go one of two ways. You could roll
up in a ball and die, or you're persevere man.
You know, my motto as I live by, is don't
(03:16):
quit yep. That runs through my blood. And something, as
I said, there was a moment where I felt this
sense of lightness man like, like I felt this energy
going through my body and like as almost like a
born again moment. And I've had this electricity going through
(03:41):
my body ever since. And for a short amount of
time there was a moment that I was thinking about
running a governor and you know, put the team together
and did the whole thing, traveled up and down the state.
It was very exciting. Uh Simultaneously, you know, I'm in
a car more than Marrio. I mean, you know, look,
(04:01):
we live in a town where you're in a car
all day long, but us more than ever now because
I'm not a big Beverly Hills guy. So I pull
out of this complaint, you know, this apartment, and I
go left to the beach and you know, to see
the house and see what's going on there. And you know,
our friends are that down that way. And every day
(04:24):
I'm kind of looking on the radio, whether it's Sirius
or terrestrial radio, just for something kind of motivational. You know,
something was a little bit different, and there was nothing there,
and I started thinking. And you know, as an entrepreneur,
when the hair gets up on you, you know in
the back of your neck, you know something's happening. And
(04:46):
Ted Turner, who just passed away, was my mentor. You know,
he gave me my start the Fitness Break on Cable
News Network back in nineteen eighty one, when.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
I had just moved to Westwood.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
And there was a message on my little answering machine
from this guy Ted Turner, who had no idea. He says, hey,
I just read an article on you in People magazine.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
And remember People, People was.
Speaker 4 (05:12):
In all right, yeah, I remember it.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
People.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
There was no social media, and the article was when
Jake Barks, Spielberg, Ford and Presley jumped.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
And great headline.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
It was great, great headline man, and he said, I'm
launching this new cable channel and I want to make
it more family friendly. I like you to do a
fitness show.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
Now.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
During that time, the people I, you know, were actually training,
were casting me in movies and television shows. So I
said to myself, first of all, this was a quick
moment Marrial, right, I said, I don't know who this
guy is.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
Westwood didn't even have cable yet. I didn't know what
cable was.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
I thought, I don't want to be Jake Lelayne, you know,
because I'm an actor and you know, a legend. In
my own shower at twenty one years old, and I
was literally on my way to go to the Playboy
mansion to train HEF's girlfriend and I got over there,
(06:15):
I did the workout as normal, and after the workout,
you know, HEF and I he would always show me
the llamas and the grotto and all the different crazy things.
And I said, oh, hey, by the way, do you
know this guy did turn them? He said, Yeah, he's unbelievable.
He's a great entrepreneur. What did he call you? So?
I said, yeah, he wants me to do some show
and I go, I don't want to do it. He says, well,
(06:36):
well take a second. And then we just started.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Talking, him walking, and I said to him, I said.
Speaker 3 (06:42):
Hey, what if this guy paid me to promote me,
to like do a commercial to promote me. I could
do a fitness tip or something on the air. Hey,
hev can I use twelve playmates?
Speaker 2 (06:58):
The best pitch ever?
Speaker 3 (06:59):
Right?
Speaker 1 (07:00):
And he goes, no problem.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
Now, Mario, you gotta understand this is nineteen eighty one,
eighty two, this decade in Hollywood.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
If you didn't live it, you just don't get it.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
Man. Everything was done on a handshake and a hug.
And I mean I made my first exercise video deal
at MCA Home Video on a handshake. Wow.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
And I still get royalties wow from that deal.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
I love it. So I have twelve playmates. I went
to go see Spielberg that weekend on broad Beach. He
had a house there, and you know, I called him
Wheels and we were talking and I said, oh, hey, Wheels,
By the way, can I use the backyard, which was
the beach.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
You know.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
I said, I'm going to shoot a couple of things
back here. He sayd yeah, don't worry about it, go ahead,
done so, Ted Turner, I gave me thirty thousand dollars
to shoot two hundred one minute vignettes.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
It's a lot of money.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
Nine and eight one by the way.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
Okay, but two hundred one minute vignetta which I shot
in three days, and I still remember how it went.
It was literally it was me and two models, right,
and the two girls. And if you remember back in
the day, everything that I did. What I started with
was a broomstick, a towel right, resistance training right, and
(08:21):
two cans of Momas to make a paste, and a chair.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
Right, push ups, dips, the whole fleet.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
Because at that time women were very intimidated by using weights,
right had Jane Fonda had just come on the scene
with the high impact aerobics, and my thing was more
mod you know, was really more muscular, and so that
was my workout. And basically the bit went like this,
(08:47):
Hey gang, I'm Jacobody by Jake, and here's the fitness
tip of the day today. We're going to work the
old buttissimo. And I always gave a nickname to a
body part, you know. I called the abs Abba dabas
and I just made it fun.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
Exercise was boring, right your personality?
Speaker 3 (09:02):
Sure? And I have my two friends Marilyn and Brenda,
you know, and we're going to show you how to
do the Jake squad and let's go for ten repetitions
and we go eight nine, ten, And remember to stick
to the fight when your honest hit.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
It's when things seem worse that you must not quit.
Don't quit. See you tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
And the spots ran four times a day in the States,
but it ran ten times an hour around the world
because Ted used it as filler.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
And that's what really put me on the mat.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
This is an unbelievable story. And then you're dropping names
just lit no, no, but.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
That's a real night. But it's real, That's what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
Ted Turner Wheels, uh yeah, wheels with Spielberg, Hugh Hefner,
I mean icon did people that define their generation. And
you've been talking about motivation and discipline literally for decades.
As far as the iHeartRadio station that you just launched,
are you is it more of the same or what
(09:58):
will that be covered?
Speaker 1 (10:00):
Well, let me just take you.
Speaker 3 (10:01):
So I started just to give you the sort of
the beginning of the relationship and the mentor ship with Ted.
Right then, you know, I went from the fitness breaks
to doing I had a syndicated body by show. You know,
I did a Body by Jake show at Sam Goldwyn Junior,
(10:21):
and I did it I don't know how many episodes
on ESPN, and really just kept thinking, you know, I
just owned thirty minutes of real estate. Actually I don't
even own it, right, I rent thirty minutes of real estate.
Said I want to create a twenty four hour fitness
television network. And once again I talked to Ted, and
(10:43):
we look at headline news, remember the old headline.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
News, the wheel, the one hour wheel, international news. At
the top of the order.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
It was national news, international news, and in between was
all the different fun things. I said, that's what a
fitness television work could look like.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
And I launched fit TV in ninety three.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
I remember that, and I sold it to Rupert Murdock
in ninety eight and it was I mean, it was
an incredible moment in my life.
Speaker 1 (11:12):
Wow, which I love basketball.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
And I wanted to buy an NBA team, but everybody
in LA will buy in minor league baseball teams. So
I end up founding Major League Lacrosse. For another podcast,
we won't talk about that.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
That's another thing.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
I got a nephew. That's great at that.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
It's such a fascinating story and you're such a great storyteller.
I'm going to definitely check out your podcast just knowing
you and stuff. So essentially, Jake, are you talking about
are you going back sort of like a memory lane
and just kind of these stories.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
So let me tell you what happens. I'm just sort
of setting the stage. I'm kind of walking you through
it up how we got here. Because I'm not the
smartest guy in the world. It's just simplicity, right, I'm
always looking for where is there a soft spot?
Speaker 1 (12:00):
Right?
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Where is somebody not taking advantage of something? So I
want to go back to me driving from Century City
to the West Side every day, right and trying to
find something to listen to that was motivational. There was
nothing there, And I thought to myself, wait a second,
I can do the same thing that I did with
the TV, but I can do it in an audio version,
(12:23):
and I can create these nuggets mental health tips, wellness tips,
nutrition tips, fitness tips, right mindset minutes, fuel up tips,
all surrounded by great music in the late seventies, eighties,
and nineties, which is my favorite stuff.
Speaker 1 (12:40):
Love it. So Universal Music has been a partner of mine.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
I did the first original soundtrack to an exercise video
in nineteen eighty three. Okay, and that's for another time,
another story. But I've been in a relationship with MCA
and then Universal Music, and I'll just say this.
Speaker 1 (13:03):
You want to talk about about how easy business could be.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
And you understand this, Mario, because you're such a smart
guy and the way you deal with people it's so
terrific because you're authentic and you can't buy authentic and
you can't buy trust. And that's really the name of
the game. Of the audience. The consumer sees that they
see your eyes and they know, Eh, that guy's a chucklehead,
or hey, that's the real deal. So I have this
(13:33):
idea that I want to put this network together, not
a show, not a podcast. I want to put a
channel together, a radio channel together. And I went to
Universal Music first, and the guy who's the chairman back
in nineteen eighty three, was a junior attorney, okay, and
(13:56):
he did something for me. I don't know what he did,
but I gave him credit on the album. I mean
I gave six hundred people credit, which is the easiest
thing in the world to do. Okay, to this day,
he's a big macha.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
All right.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
Guy's name is Bruce Resnikoff. He no one has ever
given him a credit on an album except except me,
and he talks about it over time, and it's something
so simple. Went to Bruce and he said, I'm all in.
And then I was introduced to the Ihawk guys. And
(14:32):
I have to tell you something, Guys like John Zellner,
Joe Robinson, Bob Pittman.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
I mean, they don't you know you've been.
Speaker 3 (14:40):
With them, man. I had as an entrepreneur. Man, I
have created everything on my own right, and I go
out there with my little pick and shovel and try
to make it work. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't work.
But this time to have a machine behind you and
a family behind you, man, Yeah, it's just amazing.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
I mean a week ago we were number five.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
Wow an old digital radio of all the digital radio
platforms out there.
Speaker 1 (15:10):
Body by Jake Radio awesome.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
That's awesome, and you couldn't have a better team. It's
funny because I took my kids recently to see the
Michael movie. Pittman got a shout out there because I
forgot he used to run MTV and they made the
whole thing, and and Mike Myers calls him pitt Middleist
and he goes off on him, and then he's responsible
for putting Michael on MTV because they weren't showing any
black artists during the time. They weren't, so he basically
(15:33):
and he threatened the CBS had who the Myers character
threatened to pull all his artists off MTV. So Pittman
actually is essentially responsible for making Thriller the super uh
the greatest on the album of all time because the
videos took it to another level. Jake, I could talk
to you all day about all these We're gonna have
to have you back, buddy, and I'd love to talk
to you about all this, but listen. I want everyone
(15:54):
to be sure to check out Body by Jake Radio
on the free iHeartRadio app for Jake's curated music playlist, motivation,
fitness tips, whole bunch of stuff. He's an awesome individual
and just a great, great guy. Jake again, we got
to talk again. It's so great to see you, and
I hope to see you in person soon, my man, and.
Speaker 1 (16:15):
I appreciate you it. Man, let's get some food. Let's
do it all right, come on, you know, let's definitely
do it. But I'm proud of everything you're doing, man,
and thank you. Uh.
Speaker 3 (16:24):
Let's uh, let's you and I do a show together
one of these days.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
It's good, Jake, thanks again, buddy.
Speaker 1 (16:29):
Don't quit, Yeah, don't quit With Mario Lopez
