Speaker 1 (00:13):
Carmelo Anthony's new attorneys have filed an appill and they're
asking the judge in the case to be removed.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
And I know I made people mad, but I'm not
here to make them happy either.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
And Big Tigger's a strange wife has been arrested in
Georgia on kidnapping related warrants. It's Wednesday, July eighth. From
the Black Effect podcast Network. I'm Mimi Brown. This is
front page, and here are the day's biggest stories. Stay
with me. An eighteen year old from Mississippi has been

(00:45):
found dead days after going missing on a fourth of
July boat trip. His name was Nolan Xavier Wells, a
former multi sport athlete out of Ocean Springs High School
and a college football player at Southwest Mississippi Community College.
Nolan is black, and on fourth of July he went
out with a group of friends on a boat, all
who were white. They went to Horn Island, a barrier

(01:08):
island about ten miles off the Gulf Coast. His friends
came back, but Nolan did not, and according to the
Jackson County Sheriff, his friend said Nolan chose to stay
on the island. His mother reported him missing over the weekend.
A search was launched by the sheriff Department, the Coastguard,
the Department of Marine Resources, and the Gulf Island National Seashore.

(01:28):
A body was recovered Monday morning near Horn Island. Authority
say they suspect Nolan drowned, but they are still investigating.
The sheriff says there is no evidence of foul play.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
Number One, give the family space and time. They are
still process in this tragic event in all of Nolan's
close friends, and we're still waiting for one hundred percent confirmation.
I'll assure you that the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, we're
looking at this whole case just like we would any other,
and we're going to be as thorough as we can.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
Lee is not accepting that answer and have hired civil
rights attorney Ben Crump. Crump is now demanding a full,
transparent investigation. Authorities are also now investigating a viral video
that appears to show an argument on Horn Island the
day Nolan went missing. Will continue to watch this case,

(02:23):
and there are new developments unfolding in the Carmelo Anthony case.
His new legal team has officially filed an appeal. They
are asking the judge John Roach, he's the judge who
presided over the trial, to step down. Anthony was convicted
last month of the murder of Austin Metcalf. He was
sentenced to thirty five years. The new attorneys a pro

(02:43):
bono team of six that include former Dallas County Prosecutor
Russell Wilson, Texas NAACP president Gary Bledsloe, and Brooke Clues
of beIN Crump Law. They filed two things on Tuesday.
One the appeal, The team argues the court restrict the
public's access in a way that violated Carmelo's rights, that

(03:04):
unwritten agreement about character evidence was broken by prosecutors, and
that the judge only gave the defense ten minutes to
counsel a nineteen year old on whether to take the
stand in his own defense. Two, a request to have
the judge removed altogether. The reason the interviews that Judge
Roach has done since the verdict. The judge sat down

(03:24):
with WFAA, he talked to Fox News. He wrote a
signed letter to the quote Polin County Family. Now, in
those interviews, the judge called Carmelo Anthony quote a nice
young man. He said the jury got it right, and
he defended the all non black jury. He called the
work on the trial one of the greatest honors of

(03:44):
his judicial career.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
And I know I made people mad, but I'm not
here to make them happy either. You God denied the
defense and the dismissing of three jurors who at least
identified as African American on their bioforms. What did you
make of that moment? The defense raised an objection and
raised an objection. Yeah, yeah, they have raised an objection.
Like I told you before, as long as I follow

(04:06):
the law, I sleep well at night. And I'm telling
you I follow the law in that case. Did I
know what the perception was going to be? Sure? I
knew in the back of my mind what the perception
was going to be. But I'm not here to satisfy perceptions.
I'm not here to satisfy agendas. I'm not here to
do any of those things. I'm here to follow the law,
and I did it to a t.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
The attorneys say all of that violates the state's Judicial
Conduct Code, because the judge still has the authority to
grant a new trial. Meanwhile, the judge has sealed the
entire court file and is only allowing Carmelo's attorneys to
view it in his chambers. And that's happening on one
condition that they do not share what they see. The appeal, though,

(04:48):
is now on the docket. And now to our last
story of the day, Big Tigger's estrange wife has been arrested.
Alicia Brown was pulled over in Georgia on Monday night
on an outstanding kidnapping related warrant out of the state
of Maryland. According to the Hart County sheriff Office, deputies

(05:10):
tracked her SUV down after receiving a BOLO. She was
arrested during a felony traffic stop on Interstate eighty five
without incident. Two young children were also in the car,
and they were safely recovered. TMZ is reporting that one
of those children is the child she shares with Big Tigger.
The Maryland warrants, according to investigators, sim from the twenty

(05:31):
nineteen disappearance of a ten year old child. She is
now facing a felony interference with child custody charge in Georgia,
and officials say she will be extradited to Maryland. For
those who missed the first chapter of this story, Big
Tigger himself, whose legal name is Darien Morgan, was arrested
last month in Sandy Springs, Georgia, charged with aggravated battery

(05:52):
and third degree cruelty to children. Ring camera footage later's
surface appearing to show him physically confronting Alicia at the home.
He was granted a temporary protective order after that arrest.
Big Tigger has denied every allegation and has stepped away
from his radio show.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
I want to say categorically, these allegation and accusations that
have been circulating about me are false, untrue, not happening,
didn't happen.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
Now his estranged wife is facing her own set of
charges tied to a twenty nineteen case. There's a lot
more coming out of this story and we will continue
to keep you updated. But from now, that's your front
cage a Mimi Brown. This podcast was brought to you
by the Black Effect Podcast Network.
