Speaker 1 (00:05):
Donald Trump is promising $ 5, 000 checks to every adult American citizen.
But there's a catch.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Tremendous economic success. Like, in history, we've never had anything
like what's happening.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
And a 15-year-old boy survived overnight in the freezing Bering
Sea off the coast of Alaska. We'll tell you his
harrowing story.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
We started blasting our horn just to give him some hope.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
And could your TV be spying on you even when
you think it's off? There's a new investigation raising serious questions.
It's Monday, September 14th. From the Black Effect Podcast Network,
I'm Mimi Brown, and here are the day's biggest stories.
Stay with me. President Trump is promising Americans a $ 5, 000 check.
(00:56):
He's calling it a Trump dividend. He says every adult
American citizen would get one. Let's listen.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
And here is my promise. If the Republicans win the
House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them,
because of our economic, tremendous economic success, like in history,
we've never had anything like what's happening. I will issue
a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States
(01:23):
of America for five thousand dollars.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
But here's what you need to know. There is no
$ 5, 000 check right now. Congress has not approved one, and
there is no program in place to send that money out.
Trump says the money would come in part from tariffs.
Vice President J.D. Vance has also pointed to the tariff revenue.
But the numbers are the problem. There are roughly 245
million adults in the U.S. $ 5, 000 for each of them
(01:50):
would cost about $ 1. 2 trillion. And the current tariff revenue
does not come close to covering all that at once.
Trump also cannot send out those checks on his own.
Congress would have to approve the money. Republican Senator Bernie
Moreno of Ohio says he plans to introduce a bill
after the election if the Republicans win. But some Republicans
are already raising concerns about the price tag and whether
(02:13):
adding another trillion dollars in spending. And Trump has floated
the idea before. Last year, he proposed $ 2, 000 tariff dividend checks.
Those never went out. And back in 2025, Trump and
Elon Musk both floated $ 5, 000 Doge dividend checks based on
projected government savings. That never happened either. And now to
(02:39):
an incredible story of survival outside of Alaska. A 15-year-old
boy survived overnight in the freezing Bering Sea sitting on
top of an overturned fishing boat. His two crewmates did
not survive. The 18-foot fishing boat left the area on Friday.
It was supposed to be back early Sunday. When it
never returned, the Coast Guard launched a search. But the
weather was so bad, crews couldn't even get an aircraft
(03:02):
into the air until Monday. And when they did, a
Coast Guard pilot spotted something in the water.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
He didn't really divulge a whole lot of details except
for where he thought his cousin went, you know, when
he knew his cousin went over and where he thought
his brother was.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
He spotted the teenager sitting on top of the overturned
boat about four miles from the island. The Coast Guard
says surviving something like this is extremely rare. The water
was about 40 degrees.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
He was alone, and that was when he started just
giving all his attention to God. He was sitting on
his knees, just praying the whole time. He said he
believed he was going to make it.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
The Coast Guard dropped flares and life rafts around the
teenager while a nearby fishing vessel raced toward him. Rescue
video shows him kneeling on top of the overturned boat,
waiting for crews to finally pull him to safety. He
was treated for hypothermia. The other two boaters were recovered
from the water. Neither survived. The name of the teenager
and the two people who died have not yet been released.
(04:02):
But after spending a night exposed in the freezing Bering Sea,
that 15-year-old made it home alive. And lastly, you may
want to check the settings on your television. A new
investigation is raising concerns about just how much information some
LG smart TVs may be collecting inside your home, even
(04:24):
when you think the TV is off. The hardware review
group Gamers Nexus spent more than two hours breaking down
what researchers say they found. And part of this involves
something called automated content recognition, or ACR. That technology can
identify what you're watching and use that information for things
like targeted advertising. But researchers say some LG TVs may
(04:45):
be collecting more than that. Researchers say some models can
identify information about other devices around your home, your phone, computer, printer,
and nearby Wi-Fi network. And then there's the microphone. Researchers
say they found evidence that some TVs can capture audio
while they're in standby mode after you hit the power
button on the remote. They also demonstrated how a compromised
(05:07):
television could potentially store some information while it's offline and
send it later once the TV reconnects to the internet. Now,
that does not mean somebody at LG is sitting there
listening to your conversations. The concern is about what information
the television is capable of collecting, how it's stored, and
what could happen if someone gets unauthorized access to the TV.
(05:27):
And this just isn't about LG. Content recognition technology is
common across the smart TV industry. Researchers recommended checking your
television's privacy settings and turning off automated content recognition if
you don't want that viewing data collected. So the next
time you turn off the TV and think nobody's watching,
you may want to make sure the TV isn't still
(05:49):
paying attention. That's your front page. I'm Mimi Brown. This
podcast was brought to you by the Black Effect Podcast Network.
