Sometimes do a little bit of aerial work.

I started as an aera list and now I mainly
do flying trapezes.

Do you ever get scared?

Absolutely?

It never actually gets completely comfortable to be flying between
thirty and forty feet in the air.

They throw you mid it to another person waiting, and
by the way, that person is on a moving swing.

Absolutely yeah.

So I think we're all a little bit of an
adrenaline junkies. So I can admit that about myself, but
also your fitness level right comes into.
Speaker 5 (01:25):
Play at least you can't believe the minute justin manor
how many push ups can you do it?
Speaker 2 (01:29):
How many pull ups can you do? You want to
have a contest.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
I'm like, where is the Polish.
Speaker 6 (01:33):
I'm open to having a contact, and it seems like
they don't have a pollupar hair, so convenient for them
push ups.
Speaker 7 (01:41):
Honestly, I don't.
Speaker 6 (01:42):
Know my max out number of push ups. That would
be a discovery if we did that this morning.
Speaker 4 (01:47):
But okay, we this may go down.

It's like ten.

Good. Yeah, well I went. I went to the circus
this past weekend and again I asked. We had a
great time, brought our family. For me, the highlight was
the trapeze. You saw Juliana in action. It was unbelievable,
Like my jaw was on the floor the entire time.
It's cool to watch, but also when you understand the
strength that it takes to be able to do to
do that, and my heart was just beating like afraid,

like I think you're going to drop them.
Speaker 8 (02:15):
You know, have you.
Speaker 5 (02:16):
Ever fallen like you get thrown and you get to
the other side and there's no one there.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
Happens.
Speaker 6 (02:21):
I mean, we're all human, that's why there's a night.
It's flying trapezes, so it's really high level and we
don't always complete our trigs.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
So when you were little, is this something you always
love to do, like gymnastics, tumbling like all that kind
of stuff, or is it later in life.
Speaker 6 (02:35):
I was a dancer growing up, and even from when
I was three years old, I started waking my mom
up in the morning asking.
Speaker 7 (02:41):
Her, Mom, is today a dancing day.
Speaker 6 (02:44):
At the time, I only went to class once a week,
so she was like quickly put me in more classes.
Speaker 7 (02:50):
So I had never seen the circus.
Speaker 6 (02:53):
Though my family wasn't a circus going family, I always
wanted to be a dancer. But fun enough, my favorite
movie to watch on VHS was Mickey Goes to the
Circus when he visited Wringling Brothers. So it's funny later
because I never thought about being a part of the
circus myself. But when I became into aerial arts and

then eventually trapeze and into the circus, I thought back, like, huh,
I was addicted to that movie when I was younger,
So I think it's always been in there somewhere.
Speaker 5 (03:25):
So I'm guessing behind the scenes, as you're being tossed
and thrown in the air between partners, you folks really
must be getting along behind the scenes, that's the idea. Yeah,
you don't want to have an argument and then get
up on the trapez Yeah.
Speaker 6 (03:40):
Catch The dynamics are important, and keeping a good peaceful
team dynamic is really important to all of us. And
I'm lucky to say that we have such a good
team and we all love each other and work together
really nicely. So, yeah, we have to rely on each
other with our lives up there. You know, we're doing
something that's inherently a bit dangerous, so it's really important
(04:03):
to trust each other.
Speaker 5 (04:04):
But everybody grew up with the circus is there's still
a circus train. It used to dock right behind the garden.
Speaker 6 (04:11):
It still lives in pieces in people's backyards all over
the USA. But but it's a memo. But it's a
different showing. Yes, it's yeah, we travel differently now.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
And you have a robotic dog in the show.
Speaker 7 (04:25):
Yes, we do Bailey circuit he dances.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
I saw, that's right. You went to the show I
went forgetting. Yeah, he's really cool.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
And you were talking about that. The music too.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
The music's great. It's a dance vibe. It's great for kids.
I mean, my children were dancing the entire time. So
they have a DJ that literally walks around with a
turntable attached to his waist. Oh really, see what I mean.
It's very creative.
Speaker 6 (04:45):
Oh yeah, I'm glad you mentioned that because the music
is such a fun part of the show and it
really guides the audience through the whole thing, and you
do feel like you want to gee up and dancing
the whole time.
Speaker 4 (04:55):
And you're in the city for at least a week right.
Speaker 5 (04:58):
In fact, you leave and you go to DC Center
and morester, but you get to spend much time in
the city and check it out.
Speaker 9 (05:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (05:03):
Absolutely, we get to travel around see around this city.
Especially was nice because we've been here for two weekends,
so we had a little bit of extra time to
go out and see the city, which the weather was cooperative.
Speaker 7 (05:16):
At least a couple of days of that time. But
that's something that.
Speaker 6 (05:20):
I love about the lifestyle is being able to go
around adventure and see all the different cities in the
USA and have experiences with my friends.
Speaker 5 (05:28):
Well you're from Tampa, Florida. Does the circus get to Tampa?
Speaker 7 (05:32):
Yeah? We opened in Tampa.
Speaker 6 (05:33):
Wow. Actually, so that was a high pressure weekend.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
To get everybody tickets.
Speaker 7 (05:39):
Right, yep, Yeah, everybody got tickets.
Speaker 6 (05:41):
That's also a circus hub where a lot of circus
people live and retire. So not only was it friends
and family of mine from all different times of my life,
also circus people, and it was like a big reunion.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
It was another part of the circus. Oh that was
kind of mind blown to me. The contortionist, Oh yeah,
what is he? She's It's unbelievable what she did?
Speaker 3 (06:07):
Is that real? Like double joyn in?
Speaker 6 (06:09):
Absolutely she's trained her whole life to be able to
bend in half like that. And I mean she's something else.
I think she started with rhythmic gymnastics and evolved from there.
But yeah, she she practices all the time, and you know,
she's she's bending a half. Anytime I see her at work,
she's stretching, you.
Speaker 5 (06:29):
Know, just for the hell of it, Like she's she's
not in a show. She just does it during the day.
Speaker 6 (06:34):
I mean, I think that kind of skill, there's a
lot of upkeep, and she stretches all the time.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Did you see your video? It just blew me away.
Speaker 5 (06:46):
Go over her head like a scorpion and then stands
up again.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (06:50):
Yeah, you guys should see her warm up. She's amazing.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (06:54):
Do you have to rehearse every day if there's a
night show?
Speaker 6 (06:57):
I'm ideally the more practice is, the easier your job is.
We don't get to practice all the time because we
perform a lot, and so when we take our rigging
down and move to the next city, obviously we don't
have access to our rig those days. So that's when
we usually do cross training and we go to the
gym and we do other kinds of workouts.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
Didn't you start in the rigging department?
Speaker 4 (07:21):
I did?
Speaker 2 (07:21):
I think I read that.
Speaker 7 (07:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (07:24):
When I started flying trapeze, it was a job to
work flying trupees rigs. I was an area list originally,
and then the teacher of the school I was attending
at the time wanted to buy a flying trapeze, and
so she asked me. She literally told me, I know
you don't know what you're doing with your life. Would
you want to learn how to work a flying trapeze?
(07:45):
Rig so that you could work for me. I want
to buy a flying trapeze, and I said sure, why not,
not really knowing at all what I was saying yes to.
And then one thing led to another. I started working
at trapeze schools. So, for example, if you wanted to
come try the flying trapeze, I would be a person
there saying, Okay, you're going to put your safety belt on,
(08:06):
you're going to put the safety ropes, you're going to
climb up the ladder, You're going to stand on the
board like this, grab what two hands, then jump off,
and I was the one there facilitating your experience.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
There's a trapeze school.
Speaker 6 (08:16):
There's tons of trapeze schools, really, yes, And these trapeze
rigs exist in resorts and stuff like that, like all
inclusive resorts where there's lots of activities for their hotel
guests and things like that. So that's sometimes people's first
job or introduction to the trapeze, and then that gives
(08:36):
you access to a trapeze rig so you can practice yourself.
So that's how I ended up getting a little bit
addicted to the challenge of flying trapezes, starting to train
it myself. A little bit by a little bit, and
then eventually getting to a point that I could perform
a little bit.
Speaker 7 (08:53):
Then I got a job that the instructors.
Speaker 6 (08:55):
Perform once a month, so it was incremental from there.
And otherwise truppies is a pretty expensive hobby.
Speaker 5 (09:02):
Well buy the whole rig, right, it's a lot of
metal bars and like.
Speaker 6 (09:07):
Yeah, I would have to really to be able to
get in as a workers to have access to a
rig first, because otherwise, as a college student working several
jobs to make ends meet, I wouldn't have been able
to afford it.
Speaker 5 (09:20):
Well, you would have been a great cheerleader, you know,
you could be the person up top what do they
call them, one on top LEAs or on top of
the pyramids.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
They do a lot of tumbling.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
Yeah, there's a lot of Yeah.
Speaker 6 (09:29):
No, I definitely have cheered a lot of people on
to jump off of buying tuppes board. Even know being
a psychiatrist that you didn't expect is an aspect of
your job. But you know, it's really scary on the
board and sometimes people need extra help or sometimes people will.
Speaker 7 (09:45):
Get on the board and chicken out.
Speaker 6 (09:46):
Wow, And so it's it's really experienced for anyone that
goes up here for the first time.

I'm trying to Yeah, no, it's way for I've been

You know, I'm like, you're fan club. No, no, I'm
really excited.

The book comes out today and it's been getting some
great pre buds. It's just something you always wanted.

Well, Katie Couric mentioned you and said you googled your
Way or something.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
She said, I will read it.

She goes, I accidentally found one of the best stories
of my career and it was about chess. And she's
talking about your book Checkmate.
Speaker 11 (11:46):
Oh yeah, yeah, it's really fun. Yeah, I found this story,
and normally people are pitching me things, but this was
kind of the first time where I was just in
between books Dumb Money, the movie had just come out,
and I was googling and I found my way to
this crazy scam story.
Speaker 5 (12:04):
So I know you're one of the greatest writers on
the planet, right, we know that, and we're good friends. Yeah,
but how much of the fascination with this book do
you think is the chess and how much is the beads?
Speaker 9 (12:17):
Yeah, the anal beads. No, listen, I want to make
this clear.
Speaker 11 (12:20):
My my younger brother read that Katie Couric Carl and
she goes, he goes. I didn't realize that you found
this book by googling Angle.
Speaker 6 (12:27):
I was not.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
Found.

I was good.

Yeah, we found the story, didn't one of your kids
ask your mom on the show?
Speaker 12 (12:34):
Last week?

I was on the show and a bunch of kids
at Noon South are like, Hey, is your you're talking
about I'm talking about I'm talking about Checkmate. So what
happened was I was looking into scams and scandals. I
think the reason that this story got so big did
happen to do with that viral tweet that's crazy, which

I hunted down, you know, which I think is one
of my proudest journalists. You meant to find where the
anal beat side of this story came from. But Checkmate
is really a scandal about two people, one the greatest
chess player in history and one this you know kid
who's trashing.
Speaker 9 (13:10):
Hotel rooms and and he may or may not have cheated.
Speaker 11 (13:14):
But yes, I do think the reason the story went
so viral is because we live in a time now
where you live in an attention economy and nothing gets
more attention on the internet than something.

That headline was all we had to read on the air.
I remember it very.

Clearly about anal Beats.
Speaker 11 (13:30):
There was something about chess and a beads, and I
was absolutely shocked when you guys said that, because I
have no clue what you're talking about.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
Yeah, no, Ben, I gotta ask you and be honest
with us.
Speaker 5 (13:42):
Okay, have you been approached by an anal bead company?
Speaker 9 (13:48):
I thought you're gonna ask something else.

No, I have not been anything to do with that.

You're hard to sell books in this environment, so you

get to hang out with a lot of chess masters,

People, right, Like you actually spoke with all of the
lead characters in this story, right, Yeah.

I spent a year hanging out with Magnus Carlson and
Hans Nieman.

And all of these gms and the chess dot com people.

Tanya and I went to Paris and watched Magnus and
Hans have a rematch in an arena across the street
from the Louver, and it's like, it's it's a it's
a it's these.

Prodigies blow my mind.

You know.

They say there are only prodigies in music and math
and chess, and it's people who are three years old
can like put together a lego built, you know for
someone who's eighteen and just have this weird mathematical mind.
And so I got to spend about a year hanging
out with these people and and it blew my mind.
They just what they're able to do with the put

on a blindfeld and play ten people in chess at once.
And yeah, and now I'm doing events with these guys,
so I'm doing events all over the place. They'll be
at Brookline Booksmith next week on the ninth and we
have a Chess International Master coming in and it's really cool.
It's gonna be a really really fun thing, so hopefully
people will come out.
Speaker 5 (15:19):
Now, are you any better at chess the results of
your project?
Speaker 11 (15:23):
No, I'm horrible chess. I'm really not. I haven't like
memorized all the openings and things like that, and i
know a little bit about chess, but I'm not like
at a level where I've studied it and the people
who get really good study it.
Speaker 9 (15:35):
But thestics, this statistics are amazing.
Speaker 11 (15:39):
Six hundred million people play chess, and they say seven
out of ten people on Earth have played a game
of chess, which is kind of insane. And online chess exploded.
Everyone has a chess dot com account. And this story
is about how chess dot com became this billion dollar company.
Speaker 9 (15:56):
It was just two kids in a dorm room who.
Speaker 11 (15:58):
Just were like, you know, we should put is online
basically and turn it into Everyone laughed at them.
Speaker 9 (16:03):
Everyone thought it was ridiculous.
Speaker 11 (16:05):
You know, when he told his friends that he was
going to do chess dot com, they thought he said
cheese dot com and they.
Speaker 9 (16:09):
Thought, oh, that's a great idea, chee dot com. He's like, no,
chess dot com.
Speaker 11 (16:12):
And it just kind of grew from there, and then
this scandal actually made chess dot com much bigger. It
threw one hundred million people into chess because it was
such a big kind of viral sensation scandal.

You walked in to the studio and said to me
and to Lisa that this afternoon, you have a zoom
call with Casey Affleck, one of the greatest actors.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
I do. I do.
Speaker 11 (16:36):
That's about another book I wrote back back in the
past called Sex on the Moon, and Casey's I'm talking
to I was blown away. It's funny because Casey didn't
know I guess he didn't know I was a Boston guy.

And I get on the phone with him and he's like.

But you're a Boston guy, and then he starts talking
about all the Boston guys.

I Crisince John K. Yeah, they all hang out. So
I'm trying to get the into that group, you know.
But I'm not cool enough. I feel like I'm like
i'd be like screech running around the back.

But like there's a lot of cool Mark Wahlberg, there's
so many cool Boston. Oh yeah, so I've been trying
to worm my way in with the Boston actors.

You would have been a great screech now that I
used to hang out with.

He's hanging with Dennis Lahyanes. You know, Dennis Laynes.

Like, I love Dennis, but I was way too wean,

going from event and TV show and things like that.

I don't like to do anything. I reached this point
in my life where, yeah, I know you do safaris
and stuff. I don't want any more experiences Like.

Everyone's like, I'm like, I think I've had.

Enough experience in my room and factory and watch a
movie to experience anything anymore. Maybe I'm reclusive, but I
like going out. Tanya will drag me out places and
it's really fun. But I don't I don't have like
I don't want to go see the mountain gorilla or
like I know.

So I'm working on this project with the.

A and K founder Africanbi and Ken Jeffrey Kent's memoir,
and he keeps calling me. He's like, do you want
to let's go see the mountain gorilla. I'm like the
mountain gorilla. I'll go to like Disney Safari Ride and
there's a mountain gorilla right there.

I can't go out in the woods. I would be dying.

A lot of bugspread bugs.

Good. Yeah, well I went. I went to the circus
this past weekend and again I asked. We had a
great time, brought our family. For me, the highlight was
the trapeze. You saw Juliana in action. It was unbelievable,
Like my jaw was on the floor the entire time.
It's cool to watch, but also when you understand the
strength that it takes to be able to do to
do that, and my heart was just beating like afraid,

like I think you're going to drop them.

You know, have you.

Ever fallen like you get thrown and you get to
the other side and there's no one there.
Speaker 2 (02:21):

I mean, we're all human, that's why there's a night.
It's flying trapezes, so it's really high level and we
don't always complete our trigs.

So when you were little, is this something you always
love to do, like gymnastics, tumbling like all that kind
of stuff, or is it later in life.

I was a dancer growing up, and even from when
I was three years old, I started waking my mom
up in the morning asking.

Her, Mom, is today a dancing day.
Speaker 6 (02:44):
At the time, I only went to class once a week,
so she was like quickly put me in more classes.
Speaker 7 (02:50):
So I had never seen the circus.
Speaker 6 (02:53):
Though my family wasn't a circus going family, I always
wanted to be a dancer. But fun enough, my favorite
movie to watch on VHS was Mickey Goes to the
Circus when he visited Wringling Brothers. So it's funny later
because I never thought about being a part of the
circus myself. But when I became into aerial arts and

then eventually trapeze and into the circus, I thought back, like, huh,
I was addicted to that movie when I was younger,
So I think it's always been in there somewhere.
Speaker 5 (03:25):
So I'm guessing behind the scenes, as you're being tossed
and thrown in the air between partners, you folks really
must be getting along behind the scenes, that's the idea. Yeah,
you don't want to have an argument and then get
up on the trapez Yeah.
Speaker 6 (03:40):
Catch The dynamics are important, and keeping a good peaceful
team dynamic is really important to all of us. And
I'm lucky to say that we have such a good
team and we all love each other and work together
really nicely. So, yeah, we have to rely on each
other with our lives up there. You know, we're doing
something that's inherently a bit dangerous, so it's really important
(04:03):
to trust each other.
Speaker 5 (04:04):
But everybody grew up with the circus is there's still
a circus train. It used to dock right behind the garden.
Speaker 6 (04:11):
It still lives in pieces in people's backyards all over
the USA. But but it's a memo. But it's a
different showing. Yes, it's yeah, we travel differently now.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
And you have a robotic dog in the show.
Speaker 7 (04:25):
Yes, we do Bailey circuit he dances.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
I saw, that's right. You went to the show I
went forgetting. Yeah, he's really cool.

And you were talking about that. The music too.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
The music's great. It's a dance vibe. It's great for kids.
I mean, my children were dancing the entire time. So
they have a DJ that literally walks around with a
turntable attached to his waist. Oh really, see what I mean.
It's very creative.
Speaker 6 (04:45):
Oh yeah, I'm glad you mentioned that because the music
is such a fun part of the show and it
really guides the audience through the whole thing, and you
do feel like you want to gee up and dancing
the whole time.
Speaker 4 (04:55):
And you're in the city for at least a week right.
Speaker 5 (04:58):
In fact, you leave and you go to DC Center
and morester, but you get to spend much time in
the city and check it out.
Speaker 9 (05:03):
Yeah.

Absolutely, we get to travel around see around this city.
Especially was nice because we've been here for two weekends,
so we had a little bit of extra time to
go out and see the city, which the weather was cooperative.

At least a couple of days of that time. But
that's something that.

I love about the lifestyle is being able to go
around adventure and see all the different cities in the
USA and have experiences with my friends.
Speaker 5 (05:28):
Well you're from Tampa, Florida. Does the circus get to Tampa?
Speaker 7 (05:32):
Yeah? We opened in Tampa.
Speaker 6 (05:33):
Wow. Actually, so that was a high pressure weekend.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
To get everybody tickets.
Speaker 7 (05:39):
Right, yep, Yeah, everybody got tickets.
Speaker 6 (05:41):
That's also a circus hub where a lot of circus
people live and retire. So not only was it friends
and family of mine from all different times of my life,
also circus people, and it was like a big reunion.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
It was another part of the circus. Oh that was
kind of mind blown to me. The contortionist, Oh yeah,
what is he? She's It's unbelievable what she did?
Speaker 3 (06:07):
Is that real? Like double joyn in?
Speaker 6 (06:09):
Absolutely she's trained her whole life to be able to
bend in half like that. And I mean she's something else.
I think she started with rhythmic gymnastics and evolved from there.
But yeah, she she practices all the time, and you know,
she's she's bending a half. Anytime I see her at work,
she's stretching, you.
Speaker 5 (06:29):
Know, just for the hell of it, Like she's she's
not in a show. She just does it during the day.
Speaker 6 (06:34):
I mean, I think that kind of skill, there's a
lot of upkeep, and she stretches all the time.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Did you see your video? It just blew me away.
Speaker 5 (06:46):
Go over her head like a scorpion and then stands
up again.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (06:50):
Yeah, you guys should see her warm up. She's amazing.

Do you have to rehearse every day if there's a
night show?
Speaker 6 (06:57):
I'm ideally the more practice is, the easier your job is.
We don't get to practice all the time because we
perform a lot, and so when we take our rigging
down and move to the next city, obviously we don't
have access to our rig those days. So that's when
we usually do cross training and we go to the
gym and we do other kinds of workouts.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
Didn't you start in the rigging department?
Speaker 4 (07:21):
I did?
Speaker 2 (07:21):
I think I read that.
Speaker 7 (07:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (07:24):
When I started flying trapeze, it was a job to
work flying trupees rigs. I was an area list originally,
and then the teacher of the school I was attending
at the time wanted to buy a flying trapeze, and
so she asked me. She literally told me, I know
you don't know what you're doing with your life. Would
you want to learn how to work a flying trapeze?
(07:45):
Rig so that you could work for me. I want
to buy a flying trapeze, and I said sure, why not,
not really knowing at all what I was saying yes to.
And then one thing led to another. I started working
at trapeze schools. So, for example, if you wanted to
come try the flying trapeze, I would be a person
there saying, Okay, you're going to put your safety belt on,
(08:06):
you're going to put the safety ropes, you're going to
climb up the ladder, You're going to stand on the
board like this, grab what two hands, then jump off,
and I was the one there facilitating your experience.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
There's a trapeze school.
Speaker 6 (08:16):
There's tons of trapeze schools, really, yes, And these trapeze
rigs exist in resorts and stuff like that, like all
inclusive resorts where there's lots of activities for their hotel
guests and things like that. So that's sometimes people's first
job or introduction to the trapeze, and then that gives
(08:36):
you access to a trapeze rig so you can practice yourself.
So that's how I ended up getting a little bit
addicted to the challenge of flying trapezes, starting to train
it myself. A little bit by a little bit, and
then eventually getting to a point that I could perform
a little bit.
Speaker 7 (08:53):
Then I got a job that the instructors.
Speaker 6 (08:55):
Perform once a month, so it was incremental from there.
And otherwise truppies is a pretty expensive hobby.
Speaker 5 (09:02):
Well buy the whole rig, right, it's a lot of
metal bars and like.
Speaker 6 (09:07):
Yeah, I would have to really to be able to
get in as a workers to have access to a
rig first, because otherwise, as a college student working several

She goes, I accidentally found one of the best stories
of my career and it was about chess. And she's

between books Dumb Money, the movie had just come out,
and I was googling and I found my way to
this crazy scam story.

but how much of the fascination with this book do
you think is the chess and how much is the beads?

My my younger brother read that Katie Couric Carl and
she goes, he goes. I didn't realize that you found
this book by googling Angle.

Yeah, we found the story, didn't one of your kids

happened was I was looking into scams and scandals. I
think the reason that this story got so big did
happen to do with that viral tweet that's crazy, which

I hunted down, you know, which I think is one
of my proudest journalists. You meant to find where the
anal beat side of this story came from. But Checkmate
is really a scandal about two people, one the greatest
chess player in history and one this you know kid
who's trashing.

Hotel rooms and and he may or may not have cheated.

But yes, I do think the reason the story went
so viral is because we live in a time now
where you live in an attention economy and nothing gets
more attention on the internet than something.

There was something about chess and a beads, and I
was absolutely shocked when you guys said that, because I

Tanya and I went to Paris and watched Magnus and
Hans have a rematch in an arena across the street
from the Louver, and it's like, it's it's a it's
a it's these.

Prodigies blow my mind.

They say there are only prodigies in music and math
and chess, and it's people who are three years old
can like put together a lego built, you know for
someone who's eighteen and just have this weird mathematical mind.
And so I got to spend about a year hanging
out with these people and and it blew my mind.
They just what they're able to do with the put

on a blindfeld and play ten people in chess at once.
And yeah, and now I'm doing events with these guys,
so I'm doing events all over the place. They'll be
at Brookline Booksmith next week on the ninth and we
have a Chess International Master coming in and it's really cool.
It's gonna be a really really fun thing, so hopefully
people will come out.

Now, are you any better at chess the results of
your project?
Speaker 11 (15:23):
No, I'm horrible chess. I'm really not. I haven't like
memorized all the openings and things like that, and i
know a little bit about chess, but I'm not like
at a level where I've studied it and the people
who get really good study it.

But thestics, this statistics are amazing.
Speaker 11 (15:39):
Six hundred million people play chess, and they say seven
out of ten people on Earth have played a game
of chess, which is kind of insane. And online chess exploded.
Everyone has a chess dot com account. And this story
is about how chess dot com became this billion dollar company.
Speaker 9 (15:56):
It was just two kids in a dorm room who.
Speaker 11 (15:58):
Just were like, you know, we should put is online
basically and turn it into Everyone laughed at them.
Speaker 9 (16:03):
Everyone thought it was ridiculous.
Speaker 11 (16:05):
You know, when he told his friends that he was
going to do chess dot com, they thought he said
cheese dot com and they.
Speaker 9 (16:09):
Thought, oh, that's a great idea, chee dot com. He's like, no,
chess dot com.
Speaker 11 (16:12):
And it just kind of grew from there, and then
this scandal actually made chess dot com much bigger. It
threw one hundred million people into chess because it was
such a big kind of viral sensation scandal.

and to Lisa that this afternoon, you have a zoom
call with Casey Affleck, one of the greatest actors.
