Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's get to go, and shall we welcome to the
After Show podcast. That would be to you the After
Show Army. I'm justin. Today is Tuesday, July fourteenth, second
day back from vacation, and we're in full swing now. Baby, Hey, justin.
It's the Angela the Scientist. Thank god, you guys are
back from vacation. Just kidding. You obviously deserve a vacation,
(00:20):
but last week was rough in the lab without you guys. Yeah,
that's all. Just glad you guys are backing at it
all right, best yeah, best to you, Angela. I saw
Angela recently at Least's book club. She was there. It's
so funny because like people will DM me and I
get a lot of dms and I can't respond to
(00:41):
them all. It's a tough thing, trust me, it's stupid.
I'm not like this big person that gets so many dms,
but it's really hard to keep up with everybody. But
if I see a DM and I respond back to it,
sometimes I'll hit the picture. I'll see who it is,
and then I see them in real life and I'm
like like, oh, I know you the pictures. I have
(01:02):
a pretty good memory, which is surprising. Because of my past.
But I think I do not as good as not
as good as I used to have, but I definitely
do have a good memory. So hey, Angela, and yeah,
that's the routine, right. We all have routines and when
they get out of whack, it throws us off. That
happens on vacation to me all the time. I love
being on vacation. But after a few days, it's not
that I need to get back to work, but I
(01:23):
start thinking about my routine and getting back into it.
Nice to sleep in I love it. I love getting
eight hours like sleep is so important to me. I
think that sleep is a superpower. I honestly believe that
that's when our bodies recover. And I feel better when
I get more sleep. So it was nice to get
eight hours for a full week, eight hours plus. And
(01:45):
I take like all these, I take supplements to sleep.
I actually have a really good stack sleep stack. I
wonder if I should share that with you guys, if
you have a problem sleeping. I don't know where I
found this, but I started using it and actually I
actually have been getting the best sleep of my life.
Let me see, I can pull it up right hand.
I got it okay. You never know where this podcast
(02:08):
is gonna take you. So my problem is not so
much staying asleep. It's about falling asleep, right, But then
it's also about not getting enough deep sleep. I don't
know what it is. I mouth tape every night. Some
of you may know that, some of you may not.
It's a weird thing. Now. I can't sleep without the tape,
and trust me, I know it sounds weird, but there
(02:29):
is benefit to breathing out of your nose. Well. One
big benefit is snoring. Right. I don't snore anymore, and
sometimes I'll wake up in my sleep I'll rip the
tape off for whatever reason. And I did that recently.
Where was it. Oh it was in old Orcha Beach,
I had the tape on. I think it was because
I was in a different bed. I ripped the tape off,
and when I woke up in the morning, Jen was like,
(02:51):
what the fuck was going on last night? You were
snoring so loud. So there you go. And that goes
to show you because I sleep with my mouth open,
which is also not good for your teeth as well.
I learned that from Perfect Smiles, my dentist. When your
teeth when your mouth. You know, you wake up in
the morning, your mouth's dry from your mouth being open.
That is terrible for your teeth. I remember when I
(03:11):
got my teeth all fixed, I say, can I chill
still chew gum? And Doctor Hout in a perfect smile,
says absolutely, because that's more, you know, keeps your teeth moist,
which is what it needs. It needs to be moist,
not dry. That's bad. That causes cavities. And I will say,
ever since I started moult taping, I do not get cavities.
But yeah, I understand it's weird you're taking your mouth shut.
(03:31):
It takes like a good week or two to get
used to it, because you think you're going to suffocate.
You think you can not be able to breathe when
you fall asleep. But that couldn't be further from the truth.
And there is a lot of benefits to that. So yes,
I mouth tape every single night. It stops with snoring,
It helps with snoring, and it helps me. I found
that when I was sleeping with my mouth open, I
(03:53):
would be like which would cause me to roll around.
But now I sleep kind of in one spot. I
sleep kind of comfortably, so my problems were are falling
asleep number one, and then also getting good sleep right
and so you know I would take melatonin sometimes I
take magnesium. But I found this this stack online that
(04:13):
this dude posted and he had like real bad sleep problems,
and so I took it and I've been using it
for about a month and it's been working very very well.
So if you have a pen and paper, you can
write this down. They're five things. First, magnet I got
these all on Amazon, by the way. Magnesium five hundred milligrams,
so for me, that's two pills. Glycine fifteen hundred milligram milligrams,
(04:36):
so that's two pills. Valerian root twenty four hundred milligrams.
That's one pill because each one is twenty four hundred milligrams.
I have to warn you about that one. It stinks
so bad, like I don't know what the hell it is,
but it smells like dirty feet, slash death. It's awful.
You can smell it out like when the bottles shut.
(04:58):
You could smell it how bad it is. But anyway,
Next is ash gowanda ash waganda I'm sorry, one thousand milligrams.
That's two pills. And then lastly is slow release melatonin,
so you got to get the slow release kind and
six hundred mcgs, so that's micrograms, not milligrams. Before I
(05:20):
was taking like five to ten milligrams a night. This
is six hundred mcgs. So on Amazon just search slowly
slow release melatonin and they come in three hundred mcg pills.
So I take two of those. So basically I take
two of each one of these, except for the Valerian root,
I take one because it's twenty four hundred milligrams. So
try it out if you want. If you have problems sleeping,
(05:41):
let me know how it works. I've been doing it
for about a month, and I gotta tell you I've
been getting some good, good sleep. My deep sleep has increased.
Hold on, I actually have it right here. So this
is for all like the nerds and biohacking wados like myself.
So last night I got an eighty sleep score, which
I don't like the Apple Watch sleep scores because they
(06:01):
base a lot of it on the time you go
to bed, which is cool, but I'd rather embase it
on the quality of the sleep. So last night I
got twenty two minutes of deep sleep, which is still low,
but I was getting only from zero some night time
we get zero deep sleep up to like five to
ten minutes. Two nights ago, I think it was. Oh no,
(06:23):
I think the last night I was on vacation. So
Saturday night I got forty four minutes of deep sleep,
so you know, it's kind of it's fluctuating. But I
never got even the highest twenty two, so never mind
forty four. So yeah, try it out, try the stack out.
Other than that, it's going to be back in vacation,
on vacate, from vacation, back in the routine. My wife
(06:46):
is home from North Carolina. I picked her up last
night at Logan. So good to see her. The kids
were so so happy. You know, my daughter. Did I
talk about this yesterday? I forget. My daughter took it
very very hard. Talk about this yesterday. I'm sorry, I forget.
There's a lot going on always. My daughter had a
(07:06):
very very hard time. She struggled Friday and Saturday. Friday
she was fine. I picked her up from daycare. My
wife left Friday early afternoon, and then I picked he
up from daycare on my way back. And when I
picked her up, the teacher said, oh, she kept saying
it's going to be a dada weekend, her n dadda,
her n datta, And it was. She was fine, but
(07:28):
then when it got to bedtime, she started losing it,
like I want mama, I want my mom. She was
like inconsolable for like an hour. It was horrendous. So
put her to bed. She was up a couple of
times during the night asking for mama. You know, she's
really attached to my wife. And then she woke up
Saturday morning at five thirty, okay, which is early for her.
(07:51):
She usually gets up like seven, seven thirty. And she
cried on the couch for two hours okay. And she
was doing the same thing, oh my. And I was
trying to console her and do it. Nothing I was
saying was helping her. And then I'm in the kitchen
finally I just like, I'm like, okay, you'll be okay,
let me go get coffee. So I'm in the kitchen
(08:12):
and she's going why man, And I'm like what do
you say? And I'm like what what? And so I
go in close to her, I'm like what are you saying?
And she goes my heart is broken. I'm like, oh
my god, like what am I supposed to do? But
she snapped out of it. She got much better Saturday
(08:35):
and then Sunday she didn't ask for her once she
kind of got over it. But I think I might
have help there. As we told her she was coming
home tomorrow, it was hard because she kept saying, is
she gonna come home early? Is she coming home tomorrow?
And she doesn't understand days, so we kind of had
to say, like, yeah, maybe you know, it's a weird thing.
But when we could say to her she's coming home tomorrow,
(08:57):
she felt better. So Sunday and Monday, yesterday she was good.
She was all good, and they were waiting for her.
When when when she got home, she was visiting her
friend in North Carolina, her best friend who moved there.
They had like a bestie weekend and their relationship, their
friendship makes me so happy. They're like soul sisters. And
it was, uh, it was just I think she needed it.
(09:18):
She needed it. She really doesn't have a lot of friends,
like she has friends, but not best friends. She has
two best friends right one lives here, one lives in
North Carolina. But the one that lives here is very,
very busy. She has multiple kids, a career, doesn't. She
lives close, but you know, she's busy, she got things
going on, so she doesn't see her that much. But
(09:40):
they talk to They talk all the time. They're in
a group chat. So it was really good for her
to go to North Carolina be with her friend. Now
I feel like she's back. She's recharged and still looking
for a job too. She got a PERDEMN job at
a place which she's going to start in a couple
of weeks. But she's been applying, but she's in NP school.
So a couple of the jobs that she interviewed for,
(10:01):
you know, she revealed that she was in in PA
school and they're kind of like, eh, eh, you know,
you know what I mean, Like they want an RN
for that position. They don't want to hire somebody. And
then in a year when she graduates and becomes a
nurse practitioner, she's like peace. So, yeah, she's got a
couple of opportunities, so she'll go back per DM for that.
(10:21):
I think she's trying to find a good job that
really works around her schedule too. With the kids. You know,
she wants to be able to, you know, get our
children up, get them off to school because I'm not there.
I'm more important on the pickup side, but the you know,
drop off and getting them out of the house, she
wants to be there for that. So she'll be fine. Listen,
if you listen to this podcast, if she's listening to
(10:42):
me talk, you know me, I always look on the
positive side of things. You know. For the entire time
that we've been together and we've been on this path together,
everything has worked out for the most part. You know,
there's been times when things weren't that good, but overall
we've been just fine. Right. We've had setbacks, but it's okay, Right,
(11:02):
we always get back up on our feet and we
always just you know, continue to do the right thing.
That's the basic principle of each of our lives, right
and our lives together as a family. We just keep
moving forward. So she'll be fine. And you know, nurses, man,
they're the best. You know, there's a ton of jobs
for nurses. It's really just about finding finding the right one.
(11:23):
And again, once she graduates, graduates and becomes an NP,
like forget about it. Her dream is to open up
have her own practice. That's her dream with her best friend,
the one that lives here. She is a who she
has a master's in social work. So essentially they could
team up and have a business where her friend sees
(11:46):
the patience and then my wife is the prescriber. I
think that's how she explained it to me. And you know,
I said to her, you know, I work on a
job where I work for a corporate company. You know,
you don't even know what's going to happen, and basically
your career is in their hands. You know, you can
walk into work and boom, you're laid off. You know
what I mean, they're flipping the station, they're replacing you.
(12:08):
You know, you just never know. The way to avoid
that is to basically work for yourself. If you work
for yourself, which is much harder to do because you know, well,
there's a lot of reasons why it's hard. Take it's
going to takes a lot of work, a lot of effort,
and nothing is really guaranteed. But I told her, you know,
if she can work for herself, that would be ideal.
(12:29):
And that's what her ultimate she told me. That's her
five year plan, is to have her own practice and
not have to depend on a company on a cooperation
for a paycheck, and I think that's great and hopefully
I'll still be doing what I'm doing and will be okay,
you know, to take our family on vacation, because you know,
that's that's really what I care about, right the memories,
(12:50):
building memories my family. That's super super important to me,
and I'm super grateful to be able to do that.
So all right, so today, great show. Check it out.
We had Ret Price on, one of my favorite guys
in Boston. He's a violinist, hip hop violinist. God, we
go way back, way way back. We had him on
the jam in Days because he was doing hip hop covers,
went super viral, went to Berkeley with Charlie Pooth. He's
(13:12):
gonna hit me up because he has a new album out.
But we talked a little bit on the show. You know,
a couple of years ago, you know, if you follow
Ty Dollars Sign, who's a rapper who made albums with
Kanye West, Ty Dollars Sign was posting videos in a
hotel room in Florence, Italy, recording with Ret Price. And
so I remember I saw it and I'm like, is
that rehdt? And I DMed him and I go, what's
(13:34):
going on, and I just remember him saying to me,
justin you know, there's so much, so many amazing things
to talk about here, but I can't yet, but I
will one day. So he came back today and we talked,
and you know, we had him on the show. On
the air, he talks about it some. It just was
sad that they didn't use his parts. You know, he
didn't talk. He didn't say this on the air, I
think because he doesn't want to, like, you know, for
(13:57):
whatever reason, he didn't sign an NDA. But he recorded
a bunch of violin parts for a bunch of songs
for them for Kanye and ty Dollars sign. This is
before Kanye really really went crazy, by the way, like
with the Hitler stuff, like all that weirdness. This was
before that. He recorded a bunch of strings on songs
(14:19):
and then you know, they sounded great. He said they
were gonna use them, and then Ty Dollas said to him, listen,
I gotta give you the heads up here. We're gonna
send these off to Kanye and there's a chance he
could change them. He could make changes to them. We
don't know, but he is known for doing that. And
sure enough, when the finished songs came out on the album,
which he which rehtt didn't hear until the albums came out.
(14:41):
There were two albums, every single one. Kanye replaced his strings,
so they flew them out to Florence for a month
at a time, put them up, recorded with him, and
then just replaced all of his strings. So that sucks,
but it was a great experience and that's what inspired
his new album, his first like original music album. So anyway,
(15:02):
go check that out on the podcast tomorrow we have
Benson Boone. Tickets will be in the garden tomorrow. It's
seven ten. Good luck on that. And then Janelle Draper
is coming in, very very funny comedian. She's from here.
She's doing filming a special at laugh Boston. She's been
on before, she went to college with Mike ev. But
she's very very funny and I'll talk about this when
(15:24):
I see her tomorrow. She sent me an email like
a pitch, you know. She's like, Hey, it's Janelle. You
know I've been on before, you know who I am.
And then she went on this like long thing that
she wrote and she I could tell she wrote it.
Chat GPT didn't write it, but it was very impressive.
It was well written. If you know me, I have
a journalism background and I get pitched every day, multiple
(15:45):
times a day for this show. I mean, that's a
big part of my job. I would say ninety nine
percent of my job is saying no right, because that's
just the way it is. People want to get on
this show. There's a lot of ears on the show.
So I read the email and I was so impressed.
I wrote back to her, Janelle, I would book you
just on that pitch alone. So we had a good
laugh on that. So, yeah, she's got a really cool story.
(16:07):
She you know, got engaged from a guy that like
was at her show in Boston. And she just has
a lot of great comedy. So tomorrow at nine to
ten for that anything else, always hit the talkbacks on
the iHeart app for the after show. I'd love to
hear your voice. I love when you joined the podcast.
Makes me so happy inside. So we'll talk tomorrow. Bye.
