(00:00):
Welcome back to Eve's Sports Radio.Wednesday, February the twenty eighth, twenty
twenty four in the Louisville area.It was an interesting night, to say
the least. I heard a littlehail on the windows. The wind was
blowing. I had put my chairsup off the deck and in the backyard
(00:22):
to keep them out of harm's way. I hope everyone else did also.
We're not completely out of this turbulentweather, so make sure that you leave
on time and be safe going intowork. Roads are slick. Crazy temperature
drops going to happen. I thinkat sixty three degrees when I stepped outside
to swing my golf club, andit is supposed to be by nine in
(00:44):
the forties and by twelve in thethirties, the upper thirties, so dress
accordingly. Of course, it's pneumoniaweather. Of course, I had my
top down two days ago, andit may be snowing tomorrow. It's just
the kind of weather we have herein Kentucky. So come back to Eve
Sports Radio. Phone number is fivezero two, five seventy nine hundred.
(01:07):
That's five zero two, five seventynine hundred. It just had to be
a meteorologist for a second, becausethe weather is crazy now. As we
know, Wednesday's home day. Middleof the week for people that have a
real job. Downhill slide after thisThursday and then Friday. Be productive today,
(01:27):
take off tomorrow Friday. But justdon't tell your boss I said that.
But be productive today. The onlyday we're promised anyway is today.
You'll know that I have a littlespecial co host sits in with me,
my youngest son, Anthony Eves Matt. Bring Anthony to the show, please,
and how are you morning? Morething to you. Here's the deal,
(01:51):
Anthony, here's the problem. We'vegot so many issues. The first
and foremost is that I've got totake care a few business items before we
get started. So I don't forget, and I will not, but I
just want to make sure that Itake care of first and foremost. We
know. March the First is CoachCrumb's Potato Soup Roosters ten four thirty Shelbyville
(02:17):
Road. That's one zero four tothree zero Shelbyville Road from eleven am to
two pm on Friday, March thefirst is Coach Crumbs a potato soup fundraiser
for scholarships for regular students to goto the University of Louisville. So let's
make sure that we take care ofCoach Crumb's legacy and continue to support that
(02:38):
event. There will be players andfamily members there so that you'll be able
to see people that you remember fromthe good old days. You'll be able
to see me no hair, yes, I used to have hair. Those
are the good old days. Butthat's first piece. Second piece we don't
want to forget. And we knowApril the thirteenth, we want to make
sure Southwest Ministries. They've got agala going on at Ellenin Stadium. Of
(03:02):
course, Ellenn. That's my man, Chris Brown. You all may not
know that, but Chris Brown's theCEO of Ellenn. He plays in my
Golf Outing. He won my GolfOuting last year. He's participating in again
this year. But they're having itat Ellenin Stadium. So let's make sure
that we take care of the SouthwestMinistries. Sarah Langmeyer, superstar, don't
(03:23):
forget that. And like I saidto you all yesterday, my man Charlie
Basham, you know, soon tobe mayor and governor. He used to
know me. But that's okay, that's my man and Charlie's doing a fantastic
job also, so let's make surewe support them. Now, Anthony,
all I can say is this,I mean, I hate it, but
(03:50):
Wildcats, Wildcats, Wildcats. Imean, that's what can you say after
these last two games that we've seen, two of the most entertaining games we've
seen for years, and back toback efforts by the University of Kentucky to
continue their winning streak. I thinkthey're now twenty and eight and improving,
(04:11):
one of the few teams that hasthree Quadrant one top ten wins. I
mean, people were upset with coachCaliperry two weeks ago and today they're ready
to give him an extension. Wellthey can't. He's got a lifetime contract
Wildcat, So no extensions. Nomore extensions for coach cal. You know,
I'm going to bring some negativity tothe show, but no more extensions
(04:32):
for coach Cal. Let's just putit that way. But Kentucky yesterday and
some Mississippi State, Anthony, letme tell you something, and then we're
going to listen to a little audioof Reed Shepherd just going crazy the last
twelve minutes of the game, andthen a little press conference with reed Shepherd.
But last night during the game, there's a person that is a huge
(04:57):
Mississippi State fan lives here in Louisville, wise because his son played baseball there.
So in Mississippi State jumps out early. It's fourteen to three or twelve
to three. Mississippi State's flying high. The Cowboys are chiming. Everybody's cheering,
and he's sending me text Mississippi Stateall the way. I told him
(05:19):
he's going to have to man up. I told him Mississippi State is probably
a twelve fourteen. I said, they will not score the ball consistently enough
to beat Kentucky. So the entiregame, and when I mean the entire
game, Anthony, the entire game. I'm going back and forth with this
person, back and forth, backand forth the entire game. And I'm
(05:43):
going to read you some of thetext here we go, and I mean,
this is all game. I've gotto go so far back. No
way go dogs. He says, bulldogs beat Kentucky's But I said, no,
Kentucky, you will catch them.No way go Bulldogs, bulldogs rule.
(06:04):
I said, the Bulldogs scored twoinconsistently. Cow's doing the right thing
by playing some zone. You benice, Go Bulldogs. They will rush
the court tonight. I said, nope, Kentucky's in trouble storm the court.
(06:25):
I said, lol, Bulldog's veryphysical. I said again, they
just in this time. This isat a twenty three. They just can't
shoot well enough. Kentucky will catchthem. This is a twenty three.
Now answering this is fact, noway, go bulldogs. Bulldogs are beating
(06:46):
them up physically. I said,I told you that's at eight thirty five.
Kentucky started to close the gap.Reed Shepherd started to go off.
He says, dang it, thissucks. They can't score the ball consistently
enough. He says, big boy'sgass. He's talking about Mississippi State's big
(07:10):
boy. I said, Mississippi Stateis undisciplined. Yes, I agree.
Then he finally gives in. Hesays Shepherd is a bad man. I
said, ht ll, Yes,I told you Kentucky was going to need
him to shoot it. I justdidn't think he'd be this aggressive. So
that's where I'm going to start today'sshow. I went to practice, and
(07:35):
I told you all, I haveto practice. The college boys went with
me, Mike Vine, we allwent to practice. I said that Reed
Shepherd was going to have to shootthe ball. But I did not think
this is in the preseason he wouldbe aggressive enough to shoot it the way
he has. What has surprised meis that Reed has not hesitated to let
it go. He's averaging twelve anda half points game, shooting fifty percent
(07:58):
from the three. He said,a tremendous But I told people before the
season started that Reed Shepherd was goingto have to shoot the ball because he
was the second best shooter other thanReeves my exact words. So that's why
I mentioned to my man. Everybodyknows Blending his son played Mississippi State,
played major League baseball. I toldyou Kentucky was going to need him to
(08:20):
shoot it. I just didn't thinkhe'd be this aggressive. Blandon says,
I think he's Kentucky's best player.Bulldogs still win. I said, go
Kentucky. He said, oh,you you know what, daring you?
Shame on you. I told him, pull for the Cats. He says,
(08:46):
go Dogs. I said, tain't hit a free throw, can't
score consistently enough. That's when theircenter missed a big free throw. Point
taken game time. You were right, dang it, it's over, and
it was over on Reed Sheepper's runner. So Anthony, it's seven fifteen.
(09:09):
When we come back, we're goingto listen to what Reed Sheppard just accomplished,
which was just amazing. The lasttwelve minutes, his last twelve minutes
Dillingham's spurt against Tennessee have just beenphenomenal for two freshmen to do what they're
doing, scoring the ball as efficientlyas they're scoring it in big time moments.
(09:30):
I mean, this isn't thirty twopoints in a blowout. This is
thirty two points on the road atMississippi State, a team that's won five
in a row. And it's competitive, I mean really competitive. The kid
may be the best player on Kentucky'steam, but we're gonna go to break
when we come back, a blandon. Don't ever ever try to argue with
the brand when you're talking about basketball. I told you from Jump Street exactly
(09:54):
what was going to happen. Thisis Eve Sports Radio. We'll talk to
you after the break. Seven nineteen, the twenty eighth of February. How
quickly time passes when you're owed. It's like that toilet tissue role well,
when it gets to the end,it goes fast, so you better enjoy
(10:15):
your days when we have them.Of course, this is the sports radio.
You all are working your way towork. I'm sitting in my basement
watching ESPN. I've got Matt behindthe glass in the studio. I think
I'm going to come in tomorrow,Matt, so just make sure the building
doesn't fall down when I walk in. And we've got Anthony at home at
his place, and we've got ourfirst caller. But before I bring my
(10:35):
first caller on, Anthony, Iwant you to be honest. How many
times in your life do you thinkI told you to shut the atll up
and do what I told you whenit came to basketball. How many times
you think I said that to you? How many times? About a million
times? Probably? Okay, Okay, that's that's factual. I want people
(10:58):
to know I was a dictator,no question, Anthony. I want you
to do one favor for me beforeI bring on our first caller. But
you can't say h E L L. I'll spell it out. Tell Blanding
to do the same thing. WhenI tell him something, Just tell him
to shut up? Can you dothat nicely? Matt bring on Blanding to
(11:20):
Eastworth Radio. Mister Blandon, howare you, sir? Well, I've
been a lot better. But anyway, good morning, mister Eaves, Matt
and Anthony, good morning buddy. And I wanted to thank you for taking
time, Anthony, out of yourday to come on and brighten this dismal
soul up. I love it,man o you Anthony, you're a real
(11:48):
life buddy, and I want tothank you because you know, Anthony,
there's an old fan. A blindsquirrel finds a walnut in the forest,
saving in a no way, noway I've heard. I'm not giving you
that, nor am I giving youa clock's right twice the day of broken
clock. I'm not giving you that, bland I told you from jump from
tip ball they jump out on theCats. You're going crazy. Mississippi State.
(12:11):
I told you I got the times. Kentucky wins and Mississippi State skilled
still scored eighty plus points. Theywon't do that anymore either in Kentucky.
That is a problem Wildcats. MississippiState can't score. They must play a
little better. D But the Wildcatsare rolling. But who told you from
jump you were not winning last night. That's all right, now you got
(12:33):
Jerry. Well, I want toask you, man, why you got
to kick a brother while he's down? Man, why you got to go
there? Because you were you werein Mississippi state and me to death last
night. So I had to letpeople know that I informed. Well.
I'd just like to ask Anthony again. It's such a rail life to have
Anthony join the show because now wehave a real we have a real host
(12:54):
now, Jerry. So I'm verythankful for that, thank you. But
anyway, Anthony, I wanted toask you a question. Please, have
you noticed if you can control youryour dad has a syndrome that I've been
worried about for years, that likewhen you go out to a restaurant or
you go play golf with him oranything like that, Anthony, and when
the check comes, when the billcomes, he tries to reach for it,
(13:16):
but his arms they just shrink, they shortened where he can't reach the
table or the check. And it'scalled alligators syndrome. And I was I
was wondering, Anthony, if thereif you help your dad with his medication
or not, because I know goodand well man, them arms shrink big
time when that bill comes. Iwas just wondering if you notice it.
(13:37):
Well, I I haven't noticed itwith me because he's paid for most of
my stuff, so I can't sayanything. God, oh my god.
I'll just say this, you guys. The the Young Center is in the
Ohio River and frozen over. AndI've never wrote anybody over like I did.
(14:01):
You today were blended? Did Ilie? Every word was text back
and forth last night, the entireyou know, I never waivered. I
told you what was going to happen. I had to be credit. Go
ahead, You've right, you werespot on. I have to give you
credit. But you know, JerryBlood is sticker and water. And when
i'm that university down there, Ilove all sports, Jerry. You know
(14:24):
I've been helping to you for yearson this owne. But when you have
in a community, when you sendyour kid when he's eighteen years old,
and Anthony knows about this because heplayed ball away from home. But when
you send a young person, youknow, five hundred miles away and you
don't know a single person on thecampus but a coach, and they embrace
your child and they take care ofhim like their family, and that university
(14:46):
down there, Jerry. There's nothingdown there but that college. But I'll
say this, they sure embrace theirown. You're always welcome back. They
have treated my son and our familyso good. They are the classiest people
in the world down there, andand I can never pull it out.
Will be all with that school forever. And I'll tell you this, Jerry.
If they're having a hot ball gameor something, my son picks a
(15:09):
telephone up and tickets are never aproblem. They embrace their own is where
I'm going with this. So theyleft an impression on me that will never
you know, my lawtie. Butyou know, at the end of the
day, I give Kentucky all thecredit. Uh they beat them, Jerry,
straight up. No referee, badcalls. Uh uh great? Yeah,
(15:31):
And Kentucky I thought, uh cussingup a little bit last night,
Jerry. I thought the State guyswere pushing them around early in that game.
And they don't help throwing up.Yes, Kentucky, it's good.
Now, I'm still worried defensively.I know they play at a faster pace,
but I'm still worried about the pointsthat they do allow. The reason
is this read Shepherd now has beentheir releading rebounder two games in a row.
(15:54):
I want to know when Mitchell willget back, have the entire team
together, how coach cal can playthe entire team. I think Mitchell will
help the rebounding aspect for the Cats. They may be a tough out because
they've got multiple players that can scorethe ball blend and I appreciate it.
I want to get to some otherguy. Didn't hear you about it?
Take care? Yes, so youhave a good one. Here's the deal,
(16:15):
guys, I want you to listento a clip of Reed Shepherd scoring
and all the facets in all theways that he scored the ball. It
was just absolutely fantastic to watch lastnight. And I've seen that multiple players
from different colleges have given him credit. I know they said that. I'm
not sure if it's verified that skyClark reached out to him telling a him
(16:37):
excellent game, and I'm not sureif that's verified. I don't watch social
media enough, but there have beennumerous players I saw on the internet telling
him congratulations for a great game.Matt plays this first clip of Reed Shepherd
scoring the basketball. Jimmy's Bell Jr. Lookque before we ever catches it.
(17:00):
Shepherd opened free Yes, they lovethat baseline move. That cupboard has such
exposiveness in his jumps. Shepherd. How they go about businesses very mature,
Shepard Valley, Yes, sir,Mississippi. Shepherd free foot row from a
defensive standpoint lot Shepherd, Yeah, pretty laid it up over Murphy backing.
(17:23):
Reeves has been outstanding lately, Shepherd. All the way, he's got a
chance for a free point flame. There is no help because of the shooters
that Calcoln put on the floors.Looks like, are you serious? Shepherd?
Great past the Shepherd floater too good? How snoop Wagger goes behind his
(17:45):
back? Shepherd, Oh man,he's trying to close this thing out,
Shepherd and out of steel pell whohad left him? Shepherd, play us
up? God By reads they gottwo on one. Shepherd had follow Shepherd.
(18:14):
God Hey, he's there are noseconds left on the clock. Is
that gonna be it? Thank you, Matt Well. I think that's self
explanatory. Anyone who watched the game. Anyone who has looked at the running
score of the game, which youcan go to on ESPN read Shepherd,
(18:37):
it's the play by play went crazywithout a doubt. He took the game
over completely. Seems to be alwaysunder control, smooth with the basketball,
makes great decisions most of the time. He had a few turnovers yesterday,
but most of the time. Fora freshman, his poise is unbelievable.
Anthony, I want you to tellthe listeners the mindset. I know at
the north you were playing Northwest BigTen Northwestern when you were at Chicago State
(19:03):
and you scored like thirteen or fourteenpoints in a minute and a half at
the end and you almost beat them. You lost by one, and the
announcer yelled out of Eves, it'sone more three. I'm gonna go guarding
the mindset when you start, whenthe ball just starts going in the basket,
what are you thinking about? Forme? I kind of zoned out,
honestly. You kind of go intoyour own world a little bit.
(19:27):
You know, the crowd, youdon't really hear them that much. Even
for mine. Mine was kind ofweird, like honestly, like every time
I touched the ball, like Iknew I wasn't gonna pass it. So
like, if I'm making every shot, what's the reason you passed the ball
for? So I came down everytime I caught, I pretty much just
kind of looked for my shot inthat scenario. And typically, you know,
I usually don't play like it.Usually, you know, it's more
(19:49):
team oriented. But in certain phaseslike that, when you kind of get
hot and you get your zone, you kind of phase other things down and
you just kind of starts going towork And usually when you're at a high
skill level like that, even aReed Shepherd, your confidence is already pretty
higher. Playing at University of Kentucky, it's a big competition game. There's
just a lot on the line, and you're just trying to do I feel
(20:11):
like what you can necessary to tryto win the game. And Reed Shepherd
kind of took over and he kindof went into his moment, And obviously
everybody knows there's a reason why he'sat University of Kentucky's not there just because
the name sounds good with the jersey. He's proven that he has the skill
over to get there, and everyperson on that team has the ability to
go into those moments like that.Rob Dillingham has done in the last game
(20:33):
against Tennessee. Reed Shepherd did itlast night against Misissippi State. There are
different glimpses of different players having theirmoment during big games. Edwards had the
big game two games ago. Hewent eleven for eleven. There's three different
players on the team that I wentto work for Kentucky consistently every single night.
And on a team like that andKyle of the players with five stars
(20:53):
and four stars, that it's goingto happen. They've got multiple talented players
and that's why they are so dangerous. I mean they truly. DJ Wagner
has not had a breakout game yet. I expect him to. He won't
shoot the ball from the perimeter likethese players, but he's still gonna have
a breakout game. They've got somany players. And when mister Mitchell gets
(21:15):
back into the fold, who isa stretch for they have another shooter that
they can put on that floor.Guys, it's I told people all the
time. They love these people.I mean I've said it a thousand times.
I mean, look like Superman, looked like Tarzan, play like Jane
got me love these big, strongathletes all look at them. Look how
(21:37):
impressive they look, Look how strongthey are. But they can't they don't
have a skill. Kentucky's players looklike guys you'd see in them all you
woudn't even know they're basketball players.But they've got a high skill level.
Just the bottom line, they havea high skill level and they're gonna be
they're hard out because they've got somany players that can score the ball.
Let's listen to Reed Shepherd's press conferencebefore he gets tars second break, just
(22:00):
to listen to read talking about hisexperience last night. Did you ever practice
the runner at the buzzer in yourbackyard or and we're growing up, Yeah,
for sure, you know, that'sthat's what everyone did as a look
at I'm sure doone did it aswell, you know, and then you
miss it and you get the rebound. They added time on the clock,
so luckily so and I went inand we didn't have to add any time
(22:22):
on the clock. Excellent, Matt. We're gonna go to break. It
is seven point thirty two. Thisis Eve Sports Radio for numbers five zero
two, five seven, one seventynine hundred. Again, I'm gonna talk
to you all about some of theissues that I think Kentucky still has.
I don't want you all to thinkthat these are just roses and green pastures
(22:44):
all the way to the final four. There are a few things Kentucky has
to address. Is the sports radiofor numbers five zero, two, five
seven, one, seventy nine hundred. Welcome back to Eves Sports Radio.
February the twenty eight, twenty four. It is now seven thirty six.
People that have to punch out o'clockat eight. It's getting close. Be
(23:06):
safe and dress appropriately for the weatheragain. March first, we've got Denny
Crumb's Potato Soup Roosters Shelbyville Road fromeleven to two. Make sure that you're
there before I leave the University ofKentucky. Anthony, I just want to
tell Cat fans, because you're feelingpretty good, Kentucky fans feeling pretty good
that the issue is this the offensiverebounding that Kentucky's allowed thirteen last night to
(23:34):
Mississippi State. It was a physicalgame. The only way teams will be
able to compete with the University ofKentucky is to slow it down and turn
it into a grind, a verysingular possession game. You do not want
to run up and down with Kentucky. If you do, if you find
a team that says they want tooutscore Kentucky. I'm telling Kentucky can win
(23:55):
a national championship. There's no question. They have too many scoring out let's
in their roster. They just do. The team that will beat Kentucky is
going to slow it down, turnit into a physical game, bump and
grind, make it a half courtpossession, make them shoot the three to
one three per possession, rebound theball, and see if they can beat
them. Kentucky wins when they getout in transition, when player penetrates,
(24:18):
throws it back, they run intothrees. They have a lot of ways
they get to it. That's whyit's important for a team to be able
to just what Mississippi State could notdo. They scored a lot of points,
guys, but they weren't consistent whenthey scored their points. That's all
I'm saying. Yes, Mississippi State, which is a problem Kentucky. They
scored too many points I which youwant to understand that they did. They
(24:41):
still scored eighty nine points, butthey came in spurts. Spurt spurts.
To beat Kentucky, you're going tohave to be consistent scoring the ball,
which makes them take the ball outof bounds, which then makes them bring
the ball ninety four feet where youcan set your defense to where they can't
run into threes, layups and dunks. Kentucky's great off misshots and off turnovers.
(25:06):
I mean, they're really, really, really good. They run like
the old Denver Nuggets. They reallydo. So it's important that a team
can score consistently, not spur chesKentucky. You're gonnacore against Kentucky because they
shoot it quickly, So that's notsaying a lot. Missisippi State had eighty
nine points. That's not saying alot because Kentucky is gonna play fast.
It's how you score. Mississippi Statewasn't consistent with their scoring. They win
(25:30):
in droughts, which gives Kentucky achance to do what they do, multiple
opportunities to score and transition. Sothat's it for the Cats. We're gonna
move all. Great win for Universityof Kentucky. And the only problem,
Anthony, I don't know if youknow, but Kentucky's next game. Okay,
They've got Arkansas at home. Thatshould be a route, Vanderbilt at
(25:52):
home, that should be a route, and then they go away to Tennessee
before this SEC tournament so Kentucky's gota chance to get on a real role.
And I'm looking forward to seeing thatTennessee game. I'm not gonna play
Rocky top on you wildcatch. You'replaying pretty well right now. So and
let's move on to high school. What's going on in the seventh region.
(26:12):
What's going on with the high schoolsports? And who's playing tonight? What
do we have? Yeah, sowe got a bunch of games going on
in the seventh region tonight. Sothe field is already set for the seventh
region. Some of the teams arealready done big game to night ballert in
Eastern big rivalry games. They playeda night at seven thirty at Eastern decide
(26:32):
the winner of the twenty eighth district. But for the seventh region, we
have manuals in Shawnee, Saint xMale Trinity, Seneca who hit a big
game winner last night against Ashington.Yes, hit a big game winner last
night, hit a three pointer totake a winning fifty six fifty five.
And then we have Eastern in Ballotare also in the field as well.
(26:53):
After the games tonight, the numberswill be set for the seeding of who
will play in the seventh Region.Out in Valley High School. Those games
will probably be said to play onearly next week, if not later in
the week this week. Excellent, guys. Let's make sure we support our
high school sports. Let's support thehigh school kids. My best days and
Anthony's also because we came back heretwenty fifteen for a senior year. The
(27:18):
Ballard Gym was packed when Anthony played. And Anthony, I'm not going to
kid you, you had great support. You didn't have fifty percent of hours
any they were sitting on stage, they were standing in the end zone at
the far end of the stage.Anthony. There were people everywhere when we
played, I mean everywhere. Theywere complete sellouts, period point blank.
(27:38):
And it made high school so muchfun for the student body and the players.
So again, I want people tomake sure you get out support your
high school teams. Again. Wewill be slowing down on this busting thing.
And I know I hate to getpolitical on you all, but the
bottom line is Jefferson County School Systemwill be able to bust your kids to
(27:59):
the schools in your dish. We'rekilling podio polio, John Marshall, because
we want our kids to go everywhere, which is just madness. If you
want your kids to go to schoolin another district, you got to get
them there. Period. That's yourprogative. But you got to get them
there. That should not be ourtax dollars getting them there. Our tax
dollars should get them to the schoolin their district. Then we wouldn't have
(28:19):
all these problems and we'd have abetter fan support pta the whole nine yards.
So anyway, that's my last politicalstatement at seven forty one. We're
going to get to break. Whenwe come back, I'm going to take
care of some news, but I'mgoing to give you some breaking news on
University of Louisville. Talk to youin a minute. Welcome back to Eves
(28:41):
Sports Radio seven forty five. Really, weather outside today, be safe,
Be careful, interests properly because itis going to cool off quickly, really
quickly. It was bomby this morningabout sixty three degrees, but that temperature
is going to change. Just makesure you're safe. Got Anthony sitting at
home. Got Matt behind the glass. I will be in studio tomorrow.
(29:04):
Like I told you, all boy, that's earth shattering. But I have
a breakfast that I'm going to abreakfast for Simmons College of Kentucky. It's
a fundraiser, and I've got Sarahand Jim Haynes coming with me, some
of the owners of Bluegrass audi andI want to make sure that I'm on
time. So I'm going to dothe show from the studio, which is
downtown on Fourth Street, tomorrow morning. I haven't been in probably in three
(29:26):
or four months. Guys. Ican do it in my pajamas from Cobble
like I did during the summer.I can do it anywhere. That's a
great thing about technology. Boy,what a great thing. But I will
be in studio tomorrow. I'll seemy man Matt and we'll go from there.
So Anthony, it will be yourfirst opportunity to see what a true
studio looks like. Now, let'sget back to breaking news, Anthony.
(29:52):
Yesterday, I'm not going to tellyou all from who. I spoke with
two people and they both indicate itto me that they were just waiting on
University of Louisville or Josh Hurd tomake a formal decision on coach Payne's future.
Because coach pain does have and hedoes have two five star recruits that
(30:15):
will commit to the University of Louisville. If Louisville commits to coach Pain,
Okay, in fact, from thehorse's mouth, that's all I'm going to
tell you. Oh, y'all cansay what you want, who to talk
to parents' agents, whatever, I'mjust going to tell you I talked to
the horse's mouth, period and bothpeople that have spoke directly with the university.
(30:36):
And if people are waiting trying tomake this pure important decision, and
it is an important decision. ButI want to just go back and preface
yesterday's show. Let's give the aparent your parent is. Last year's team
four wins did not perform well, especially at home. People were very upset
(31:00):
about the outcome because they had envisionedsomething else other than what happened last year.
And the problem is whose problem wasthat? Okay, it's really easy
to say it's coach Frank's problem. He's got to coach them up. And
we have shown you people great coaches, from Skrzyzewski to Wooden. They don't
(31:22):
win years one, two, andthree. Dean Smith, they had Dean
Dolls. I told people, hesays nothing to do with racial lines.
This is just athletics. People arepassionate. I understand that this happened.
It was funny. It wasn't funnyto him, but it was funny to
me. I said, Rick, tough it up, and I'm talking about
Rick Boss. He talked to meyesterday, he says, Jerry. I
(31:44):
was in Kroger's and Saint Matthew's.He said, checking myself out. I
said, did you get a tempercentdiscount when you check yourself out? He
said, no, I want adiscount when I checked myself out. If
I'm going to work for the place, I should get paid. But he
said he was checking himself out.He said, someone yelled at him as
they were walking out. Kenny painsucks. I said, what did you
(32:07):
say back, he said, Jerry. I didn't say anything. He said,
I know. People prayed their phoneson me. I just kept checking
out. I said, Rick.I feel for you because I know Rick,
You're not used to being yelled atlike this. I understand Rick's soft
I said, Rick. They yelledfor me when I played well, and
they yelled at me when I playedpoorly. That's part of the business.
(32:27):
It's part what comes with this.I'm sorry that somebody's yelling you at Kroger's,
but toughen up Buttercup, and hesaid, yes he would, and
we laughed. But that's how passionatethe fan base is about University of Louisville.
They're really passionate, and I justsay, and I love their passion,
but I still want them to acceptthe truth, which we're having a
(32:52):
hard time. But I'm not goingback off. I don't care. I
don't care if they yelled at me. They've yelled at me before. It's
now call my feelings. I'm notlooking for friends. It doesn't sixty five.
I got my friends. It iswhat it is. And I wish
the best for everybody. But ifthey don't like me, so what the
deal is this? University of Louisvillewent through a turbulent time, turbulent fifteen
(33:15):
years from your coach on the tabletop. Don't say it didn't happen. It
did happen. That's bad. Idon't care what you all say. I
don't care y'all say somebody set themup. Whatever you want to say.
That's just where we are today. The lie is the truth, and the
truth is a lie. But notwith me, I know, and people
that have a conscience and common sense. No, but everybody doesn't have common
(33:37):
sense. My dad took me thatlong time ago. But we've had prostitutes
and dorms, we had FBI scandals, we had another FBI in stortion case.
Your program and my program have gonethrough a lot passionate fans. But
because we were going through that,we were winning games. You thought the
(33:58):
program was healthy. The program wasnot healthy. It was bad. That's
the problem, And finally the badis caught up. Now this year.
Has Kenny Payn's eight wins impressed meto where I'm jumping up and saying coach
of the year. No, I'mnot. No, But what I am
telling you is there's not one playeroff last year's team that you would say
(34:21):
is good. Not one. Soif you don't have one player that's good,
and there's not one, did you'dsay you'd start your team with on
a top fifty program. I mean, just not one, Why do you
think you should win? That's thearrogance, that's the problem. That's all
I'm telling people. That is theproblem. There's not one kid that coach
pain inherited when he came in herethat could play at a high level and
(34:43):
make a team win you see wherells S is. You're going to see
them against Arkansas. Come on,guys, you see Sidney cravging three points
a game. I heard last yearif he could coach, he could make
Sidney do something. Guys, he'shaving three points a game. A grand
Canyon. Wellther's is a great roleplayer at North Carolina. Suurious role player,
eighth guy off the bench. There'sthat one player. But nobody is
(35:06):
gonna accept that. You Alder sayingCoach Pain did that. We did that,
But why can't we say we didthat? So this is Coach Pain's
first year, no matter how muchyou hated it is because last year we
gave him that team, all theevils, all the fans not coming,
the Board of Trustee, lowering theticket prices. In twenty sixteen, Coach
Payne went, you a coach, the financial difficulties that the city is having.
(35:30):
Coach Payn went your coach, whenyour leaders told you we didn't need
a pro team period, they killedthis ted city for ten billion dollars worth
of a tax base. Care whatyou say, it's just the facts,
But you're not ever gonna say that. You're not for some reason, you
won't come to the reality of ourlast fifteen years at Louisville did not have
good leadership period. You're just notgonna come to because you're gonna say,
(35:53):
Jerry, we won. Come on, man, grow up, Come on
now, grow up and be anadult. Yes we won, but that
didn't mean your program was healthy. That's all I'm saying to you. It
was not healthy, just factual.I'm just giving you the facts. So
does coach Pain have to do morenext year? Without a doubt? Would
I, Jerry's athletic director, saystaff members got to go without a doubt.
(36:16):
If you don't move some a staff, I fire him on the spot
without a doubt. But does hedeserve a third year when I know he's
got two top five recruits, whichthis city has never seen since the Denny
CRUMERA Eric Crawford told you that. But again, you don't want to hear
the truth. You never want tohear the truth. You weren't going to
hear the truth about coach Pain ever, that's all there was to it.
(36:37):
You didn't want to hear it.So eight wins first season, disappointing,
YEP, reasons for firing. No, last year that was us. But
you're never going to say that, because you're never going to say anything went
wrong. That was us, thatwas me, that was my program.
I've taken it. I've taken allof it. I told you all that,
(36:57):
Coach Mike, and you don't likeCoach Rack, that's a lie.
Coach I do like Coach Mac andI told you all public and I told
him, he'll tell you. DinoGaudio needed his butt kicked. All that.
I'm gonna extort you. It's partof our business. Assistant coaches get
fired, That's part of it.I was fired off the best Charlotte Hornet's
team ever, Lee Rose and JerryEves lost our jobs, the furthest they
(37:22):
ever went into playoffs. You gotme. It's part of the business.
I didn't run to the paper sayingPaul Solis is a bad guy. I
said nothing. Paul Sallis and Ihad our words in the office. I
left that office and that's the endof it. I went and got another
job, the same thing Dino wassupposed to have done. No, I
(37:43):
did not agree with what Dino did, but he still did it. I
can't say what happened didn't happen. But I told Chris Mack and I told
you all that was incorrect. Universityof Louisville did more for Dino Gaudio than
Nino Gaudio did for University of Louisville. But I can't get you guys to
add any respect for anything when itcomes to my program. And I told
(38:04):
Coach Mac that I agree with CoachMac. Do you know who I've known
forever was wrong? Stone wrong. He's supposed to just go get another jobs
what he was supposed to have done. But that's not what happened, guys.
So University of Louisville does have achance to get two top five recruits.
They do. I don't carry onBadge hate Kenny Payne to me.
(38:24):
You hate yourself more than you hateKenny Payne. But you'll never admit that
because you said your program one, your program were one, and it did.
But things happened that were not appropriate, guys. Not my fault.
I ain't do it. I knowyou're gonna say Jerry E's did it,
but I didn't. I didn't payany money, I didn't close any dorms
(38:45):
at the dormitory. I didn't letthe girls in. I didn't do those
things. I just have to reportwhat happened, and these things happened.
So I'm telling you your program one, but it was not healthy. So
now we're growing through making the programhealthy again. The only thing we can
say about coach Paint is he hadone games. We haven't had one scandal.
(39:07):
Oh yes, we have a kidsits in the stands and says something.
We've made a huge deal of thatbecause a kid that was put off
the team sits in the stands. What's wrong with that. We didn't make
a huge deal about my prostitutes anddorms. Let's just be honest, guys.
We didn't make huge deal about onehundred thousand dollar payments. Come on,
guys, we made excuses when wewanted to make excuses. But we
(39:30):
have made a huge deal on akid put off a team sitting in the
stands. It's just interesting on howwe want to relate on certain issues.
So, guys, is seven fiftysix. I know I gotta go.
I don't even know no matter ifI got my third break in Matt,
I'm sorry. If I didn't,or maybe you took care of me,
I don't know, but I'm justtelling you all, we do have a
(39:51):
chance. University of Louisville. Weto get two top five recruits, and
without good players, you can't win. And no matter what you want to
say about last year's team, whichPain inherited, he did not have good
players, period point blank. It'snot my fault. I'm not personally attacking
Ellis or Sidney Curry or Weathers. But guys, you're not going to start
(40:12):
a program with those players. Period. It's East Words Radio, Anthony.
If you want to come in withme tomorrow, I'm going to be in
studio. I'll be dressed suiting time. You know. It's a class affair
tomorrow morning, and I will speakto you on God willing then, Matt,
great job. See you tomorrow morning, Matt. I'll talk to you
all later. Bye bye
