I do want to give you a little bit about
the city of Montabello before we talk about Freddie Freeman
falling in the dugout last night. What it's something, what
it's something to discuss. There's a game every night and
normally nothing happens, and we just kind of watch in
the back of your head. It's on, you're listening whatever,
it's just white noise, and then all of a sudden,

you heard Stephen Nelson last night.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Oh my god. And Freddy's carcass is laid out.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
We'll get to that, but don't act like I can't
talk about it because everybody loves Freddie Freeman so much.
I love Freddy Freeman too, But it did look kind
of like he fell through a hole in the earth,
which is funny. I'm sorry. All right, did you guys
know that Montabello is the oldest European settlement in all

of La County?

Yeah, so a lot of people are like, you know,
I don't like your colonials. This is the first place
that they squatted down in the late seventeen hundreds and
built a mission, and it was the most fruitful mission. Now,
they only had it for like three years and they
got flooded out and they moved it over to another town.
But Montabello has a deep, deep history, and we'll get

into it throughout the show. I was hoping to get
here early enough to visit a special site. But where
at the corner of Washington Boulevard and South Bluff Road.

Do you guys know where that is? I wanted to go?
Is it right over there?

How far?

Really far? Two miles?

I might go there after the show because there's two
cannons there from a battle in the Mexican American War,
which which is in Montabello has a rich history in
that and I did not know that, and I was
excited to hear about that.

But did you guys know this.

That Mantabello in March of twenty twenty three had an
EF one tornado hit the city. Where any of you
guys here for that? When the tornado hit in twenty
twenty three?

What happened?
Speaker 3 (09:25):
It damaged seventeen structures. Well, number one, you just you know,
when you're running around in La and like getting off
the sixty, you don't expect to be hit by a tornado.
It's just not you know, And it never almost never
happens in La County. Now you've been to Oklahoma City,
I've been to Homeiworkholme, So yeah, I've been in Oklahoma
(09:47):
and Norman, Oklahoma. I've been Stillwater, Oklahoma. And I remember
flying out of the airport at Oklahoma City. They sell
t shirts at the airport like we sell T shirts.
At the Hollywood Sign, they had a T shirt of
a tornado and it said bring it. And I was
kind of like, you know, I don't I don't see
how that, you know, like standing in front of a

tornado and saying bring it. I don't care who you are.
I mean, it's a bad I don't care. I mean
you could be Tony Mandrich. It's a bad idea.

I bet you that wasn't a best selling T shirt.

Dear, lot of funny though. I was like, this is
what you're proud of.

But uh, the tornado that hit here damaged seventeen structures.

And if that one guy, Like, if there's like a

get hurt? Tornado?

Well, no way, the twenty twenty three EF one tornado,
look it up.

It was the strongest.

Tornado or as they called it here in Manabello, tornado
just strike the Los Angeles metro area since nineteen eighty three,
ninety to one.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
Hundred mile per hour whins.

And it touched down on the sixty over there and
Whittier Boulevard where the girls are prettier and wittier and
at tracked a short path of about a mile and
went through parts of the city that does not often happen,
but it happened in the great city of Montabello. Also,
there was a UFO siding here in the fifties that

we don't need to No, there was, but we don't
need to get into it.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
That's fine.
Speaker 3 (11:38):
But I will have more on the Mexican American War
battle that was in Montabello a little bit later in
the show. So you sit tight if you were like
I'm going to leave, pick up my kid from school, No,
call your tea or whatever, get somebody to pick them
up at Sure High School. Home of the Spartans, because

I know you watched the Dodgers don yep, did you

Freddy Freeman fell into the dugout and what were your feelings.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
Well, my first thought was, you don't and you said
it earlier, you don't see that very often. So I'm
wondering if because those guys all have awareness of where
they're out on the field, where the wall is, where
the fences and propioception, so I'm wondering if, like there's
usually guys standing at the top of those stairs. And
so when he was tracking that foul ball because no
(12:52):
one was at the top of the stairs, did he
think that he wasn't near the top of the stairs.
But it was unusual to see a guy that's been
around how many years he been the league fifteen years? Yeah,
to do that. Let's hope he's okay, But that was
a nasty fall.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
Well, he's a.

Big guy, yea too, and that's a longer way to fall,
there's no doubt about it. But the thing that kind
of weirded me out about it was and God bless him,
today was oral Herscheizer Day and he got his star
on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and all that. But
Oral and Steven Nelson were like, what did anybody catch him?
And It's like, well, first of all, there was nobody
(13:26):
over there. There was nobody there to catch him. Are
they supposed to run over and dive and catch him
like it was a baby.
Speaker 4 (13:33):
Well, that's what I'm saying. Is it unusual for there
to be nobody over there? I don't know, because he
ran like he didn't even stop and look he was
on a full run down those stairs.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
Yeah. And you know, I've seen this in the past.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
You see a guy score a touchdown and then like
jump over a partition and he falls into like the
steeplechase pit or something like that. That actually happened. We
were playing a game right down the road. We were
doing seven on seven Carson Palmer. When during college football
in the summer, you're not allowed to have coaches, and
if there's a ball, you have strength coaches, but you

can't have football coaches that sit there and tell you
how to play football. You have to do it yourself.
So the quarterback usually organizes that stuff. And we were
playing at La City College against the La City College guys,
just doing seven on seven. But we had our team,
you know, Carson Palmer, our receivers and all that. And
I remember Carson Palmer hit Windrell Hayes, a very good
(14:30):
receiver transferred from San Jose State, and he caught it,
and then he took like three steps and he disappeared.
He fell into the steeplechase pit that was beyond the
end zone. And it was horrifying, because, I mean, what
are we going to say. We were playing seven on
seven at La City College with a very elite receiver
(14:51):
and he fell into the steeplechase pit and now he
can't play the football season.
Speaker 2 (14:55):
He ended up being okay. But baseball's like that.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
All these stadiums, actually older ones like Dodger Stadium, they
have all kinds of weird nooks and crannies and things
that could happen. But first of all, you're never supposed
to help the opponent in baseball. It's an unwritten rule,
that's what they say. Even though the Royals are like
one of the worst teams, they're still competing. It's still
a pro baseball team. And then the other side of
(15:19):
it was there was nobody there to catch them, even
if they wanted to there was nobody there.
Speaker 4 (15:24):
It's so unusual. I'm just even if guys wanted to
help them and they have been over on that side,
you just don't see that. So they probably would have
reacted slowly to that. Anyway, I would imagine you don't
see that. But it was an interesting moment.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
But for the Dodgers, it was a big moment because
they completed the sweep of the Kansas City Royals. Everybody's
happy about that. Nobody liked seeing the Dodgers lose a
bunch of games. Well everybody that's not in us, you know,
our world or our geo fence of the Dodger games
on a FI seventy, not everybody rooting for the Dodgers down.
(15:59):
But do you do you think of that as a
villainous franchise. We had a big interview with Mookie Betts
earlier in the week where we discussed that and the
clip went viral.
Speaker 4 (16:07):
Well, what I thought was interesting when they got scooball
and then they were in the midst of that losing streak.
You just wonder if other teams out all these other
teams want to beat the Dodgers, But I think they
want to beat them even more now, just because they
go get whoever they want and spend whatever they want.
And so I think if you're a professional baseball player
(16:28):
and you've been in the league, you're kind of like
f these guys, man, they get everybody. They've won it
the last two years. So I don't think they're a
villainous friend. Now, I have a bunch too many nice guys. Yeah,
but I think that I would guess other players around
the league are like, they're going to win it every
year because they have the ability to go spend and
get whoever they want, which is great for Dodger fans.

But I just think players around the league are probably like,
this is bs.

If we go to break and discuss that very thing
with David Vasse and Todd more about the Dodgers and
what's going on at Dodger Stadium with the Milwaukee Brewers tonight.
I do want to take a little pole. Tell tell

Guys did it take longer than three days to solidify
the deal to lease the home or lease the apartment
or buy the home and going to escrow and do
all that stuff. How many of you guys it took
longer than three days to purchase that and gore to
get yourself into that. Congratulations, It took you longer to

find housing as an individual in southern California than it
did for Bob Iger and Josh Kushner to buy the
Lost Angelus Lakers, one of the most iconic franchises in
the history of sports, not just basketball sports. Three days,

that's all it took to sell the Lakers. What an
unbelievable story in our time that will unfurl in the
next few weeks, I'm sure, and the Dodgers very much
involved because it's Mark Walter who sold the team. So
a wild story, a lot of speculation, and everybody is
asking about it.

perspective on it as far as ownership changes and what
it's like to be a player or like he is
involved with now agents when there's ownership changes, and it

security guards that act like every day is the first
day they've seen me. And I'm the only reason why.
The only reason why I'm standing out here is not
to watch Rock Stewart throw live VP. I'm out here

because I'm interested to see whether or not one of
the hitters that Rock Stewart is going to pitch to
is the injured Will Smith. That is the person of interest.
That's what I'm waiting for. And during this interview, I'll
let you know whether or not Will Smith emerges from

I have great news for the city of Montebello, in
the city of Los Angeles. The World Series hero himself
two years running, Freddie Freeman is on the field right
now going through his daily routine. And even bigger news,

Seriously, what were your impressions when you saw that happen
last night and what are your impressions now that you
hear people talking about it As far as what happened,
what should have happened, and how Freddie handled it all.

Well, there were no Royals players or staff around really
to try to catch Freddy because those steps you are
right there at the far end of the business dugout,
which basically separates the camera well from the dugout, and
so there's really nowhere for anybody to be to try
to catch Freddy. Those two trainers tried to, but it

was too late. And when I saw him go down
like that, I instantaneously remembered move On the brand new
Angel at the time in nineteen ninety nine, trying to
make the same play, going down the visitors dugout and
severely spraining his right ankle. Was somehow able to hit
thirty three home runs for the Angels that year, but

it was an auspicious beginning to a big time contract.
And luckily for the Dodgers, Freddy did not bang his
head on the floor. He just said he was really
sore from head to toe. Tomorrow. Don't be alarmed tomorrow,
because tomorrow was a scheduled day off for Freddie Freeman.
But he's in there today and we are seeing two
Dodgers come out right now to face Rock Stewart, and

they are not named Will Smith, Alex Fall and Hunter Faducca.
So we are still waiting for Will Smith to take
betting practice on the field this Homestand.

Is that how bad of a sign is that for

Yeah, Dave, I wanted to get back to Freddie Freeman
because it's interesting that he's been in the league for
so long, He's played a million games at first base.
You don't see that play very often. Reference mo Vaughn
it happened too. But what has he talked about or
said anything today about how it happened last night?

He talked after the game last night, and you know,
Freddie was in great spirits, which gave everybody relief. And
he even said last night I'm hoping to play today
and he's in the starting lineup like we reported. But
he said basically, he didn't know there wasn't a railing
right there. He never looked to see where the railing was,
and when he stepped, he thought he was going to

be stepping, you know, his last step on the dirt,
but instead it was one of the steps leading down
into the dugout. And he said, the new renovations here.
If you haven't been here, you're not familiar with the setup.
There's that one flat of stairs that he fell down,
and then there's a second flat of stairs down into

the Royals Clubhouse. He landed on that flat area that
is between those two set of stairs. It could have
been a lot lear if he would have gone down
another set of five or six stairs. So he credited
him being able to land on that flack round and
also since the staircase was right behind him. He did
(28:13):
not bang the back of his head because his head
kind of went into that open space between the ground
and the next set of stairs.

what you expect, because after the Dodgers had a terrible
ten days, they've beat up on a much lesser team
in the Royals, though the Royals gave him a pretty
good run at it.

What do you expect in this one?
Speaker 5 (28:58):
Well, the Brewers are limping into this series. They just
got swept by the San Diego Padres and did not
score many runs, so they're not playing their best coming
out of San Diego. In this four game series, the
Brewers are throwing three lefties at the Dodgers, including tonight
Shane Dronin and on Sunday one of their better lefties,
(29:18):
Logan Henderson, and on Saturday, a nationally televised game, the
miss Jacob Mazerowski will be on the mound for the
Brewers against the Dodgers, so they're throwing for their best
pitchers against the Dodgers, at least three of their four
best pitchers. Harrison pitched in San Diego, did not pitch twelve,
but the Brewers are throwing three of their best, including
(29:39):
Miserowski on Saturday, so we'll see what the Dodger offense
can do against them. The Dodgers have Roki tonight, Yamamoto tomorrow,
they got they got Scooble on Sunday, so they're throwing
a lot of They're really good pitchers in this series
as well.
Speaker 4 (29:56):
I thought it was interesting Dave coming off that losing
streak they had last week or the week before, and
Dave Roberts talking about having more of a sense of
urgency from the players, him managing with more of a
sense of urgency. I don't follow this obviously as close
as you do, but I don't recall Dave Roberts talking
like that with this much time to go in the
regular season.
Speaker 5 (30:16):
No, he usually doesn't speak that way publicly, And I
think that sent a message similar to the way Phil
Jackson used to send messages through the media. Dave Roberts
sent a message to his team through the media, and
now with social media, the message gets to these guys
loud and clear right away because they see everything. So
(30:38):
him saying it's time to go. On top of the
fact that Miguel Rojas told us last week that after
the Dodgers lost their seventh in a row, he used
the players only group text to remind them that the
sprint should start now, to lock it in. So they
had the team leader in the clubhouse tell them to
lock it in and focus and let's change our approach.
(31:00):
And they had the managers say the same thing. So
we started to see that more in that Royal series,
and that was a good, for lack of better term,
training ground to get ready for not only this four
game series against the Brewers, but as Rojas put it
in that text, the sprint for the rest of the season.

Dave, we didn't talk to you yesterday. You had some responsibilities.
But Snell Zilla, your favorite pitcher in the history of
the world. Blake Snell, two time cy Young Award winner,
had ten strikeouts and looked about as good as he
possibly could with not a lot of run support.

The other night.
Speaker 3 (31:35):
What were your thoughts on that and what was the
aftermath like and what do you expect going forward, especially
with scoobl on the team.
Speaker 5 (31:43):
Now, yeah, I would say that Schooble being on this
team is really good for the Dodgers because it's going
to push Blake Snell to prove that he's a better pitcher.
Speaker 4 (31:53):
Than Derek Scooble.
Speaker 5 (31:55):
And I know people, I've told people this in the
press box even before Snow made that story the other night.
At his best, he's number one, far and away more
talented than Schoogle is, and number two at his best
when he's healthy, he's better than Schooble. Scooble's a really
good pitcher that is more available than Snell. And as
(32:17):
you guys know in sports and life, availability is number one.
So if Snell can put it together at some point
where he pitches a full season, when he does, he
wins the cy Young. If he can do that next year,
I think you're going to see that for a full year.
But I mean, let's look at this, guys. Blake Snell
had ten strikeouts in his first start, basically his only
(32:39):
start this season, and Trek Scouble in two starts has
combined for twelve strikeouts. I think if you watch the
game the other night and you watch Schooble so far
with the Dodgers, there's no argument that Snell was more
dominant in any one of Schooble's first who starts with
the Dodgers.
Speaker 4 (32:57):
I think what you were looking for, Dave, is the
best ability is availability. That's what you were certaing. There
we go the interesting day, even though you weren't on
it last night, Dave on TV, I did watch the
pregame show and they had Blake Snell on and I
thought it was very interesting, Like and I know he's
had some injuries, but the guys won TUSI youngs he's
won a world championship, but he was talking almost like
(33:17):
he was a second or third year guy. Explained more
because you've gotten to know him, Like how competitive this
guy is, because it really came through last night and
watching him with the guys on the set.
Speaker 5 (33:29):
He's pitching with the chip on his shoulder. He knows
there's a lot of critics out there that take shots
at him, and he always feels like he never gets
his due respect, and that's why he talks the way
he talks that you saw last night. I mean, he
just doesn't get the respect. The two time Cy Young
Award winner and a guy that is a World Series
champion now and had a lot to do with the

Dodgers getting through Milwaukee and Philly last year. Nobody seems to,
you know, give him any respect. And now that he's
had those owned chips removed from his elbow, he has
said he's the healthiest he's been in three years, and
he said he's really excited that Dodger fans are going
to get to see a healthy Blake Snow And I

just think like that that lends itself to.

The way he has.
Speaker 5 (34:16):
To compete to pitch with a chip on his shoulder,
to prove every time out there that he's as good
as anybody else out there. I mean, right now, he's
not oblivious to the fact that everybody is fawning over
Trek Skouble and he wanted to remind everybody who's the best,
and he showed that the other night.

When's Okana going to pitch again, Dave?

If ever, he's supposed to throw a bullpen session here
in the next week, So that's going to be very
telling because the last time he threw a bullpen session
thirty four pitches the first series after or the second
series after the All Star break in Philadelphia, it has
shut him down because the left knee was too sore.
So once he throws that bullpen session and he wakes
(35:01):
up the next morning and he throws another bullpen session,
we'll have a better idea whether or not he's going
to pitch again this year. So until he throws that
bullpen session, nobody can say for certainty, including Otani himself,
whether or not he's going to pitch again this year.

some field goals in a Texans uniforms, so maybe they're

for the Chargers right now, and it looks like his
parents are on the sideline and his mom's got a
very clever shirt that says mother Dicker, he kicked me first.

The big name we're going to be watching is, of course,
their first round pick at Kem Mazador fled to the
twenty fifth pick. Not sure why he ended up, you know,
wrecking the playoffs and helping Miami reach that championship game
and darn near win a national championship. He has been
an absolute course throughout training camp, so he's probably number
ninety is going to be the one that we're going
to be the most excited to see. Starters aren't going

to play that's aren't going to play. So that's probably
you know, these young rookies led by that him and
the fourth round pick out of Mississippi State, their fourth
two receiver, fourth two forty receiver, Brendan Thompson. So there's
some excitement there.
Speaker 4 (40:55):
You just said the starters weren't going to play. I
was going to ask you about Herbert what what's the
expectation for him this year? Matt He's taken a little
bit incoming with the playoff performance and not being able
to get over the hump, and like, where is he at?
What's he talked about heading into this season here in
the preseason?
Speaker 6 (41:14):
Well, I don't think I've ever seen an offensive coordinator higher.
He celebrated so much, if he talked about so much.
But with Mike McDaniel, you know, getting let go by
the Dolphins coming in to bring that Shanahan offense, people
are excited. They think that you know, it's going back
to his rookie season when Shane Stichin was here, you know,
(41:35):
and he basically broke every rookie record except maybe one
or two that Andrew Luck still holds that he hasn't
really had a good run with ocs. It's just, you know,
they're not necessarily guys that you think of when you
think of the top of the list of who you'd
want to hire. So I think there's a lot of
I don't know, I'm going to call it excuse making,
but people saying, Okay, this, this is an opportunity for
(41:56):
him to really show the league. You know that he
can put up MV level numbers, you know, to going
back to back eleven wins season. So yeah, the expectations
are incredibly high, and I would assume the pressure from
the national media is going to be incredibly high for him.
Speaker 3 (42:11):
Do you really expect to see anything fancy or impactful
from McDaniel's offense tonight, Matt or are they you know
how the preseason is, for God's sakes?
Speaker 6 (42:22):
Yeah, I asked them that, because you know, they're playing
the text all three of their opponents they play in
the regular season, the Texans, the forty nine ers in
the rants. So I said, I asked them, what do
you do in that situation? And he said, look, my
stuff's on film, It's on tape. Anybody can watch what
I do. He goes, We're not going to do anything.
You know that I would consider to be I'm holding
back to try to catch someone off star. He's like,
(42:43):
but I'm going to run my offense. We're going to
run some motions. And then he said, look, my favorite
thing to do is call place what I like doing
more than anything else. So I intend to call, you know,
the plays that I would probably typically call in a game.
So that's he's been a thing. It's not going to
be vanilla. You know, you're going to see some of
the stuff that he gets really creative with, especially in
the run game. I don't think you're gonna see a

lot if any of them are in Hampton, so it'll
probably be more I'm Kamanie by Dell to kind of
show off that part of the game. And that's kind
of the way he put it to me though, was that, Yeah,
I'm gonna I'm gonna kind of call what people expect
me to call, because you know, like last year, I mean,
Greg Roman called nothing. It was back up to the
backups offensive line, and they just ran the ball like

crazy with no bells and whistles. So I get the
sense maybe it's gonna be a little more exciting the
summer round.

the city of Montabello before we talk about Freddie Freeman
falling in the dugout last night. What it's something, what
it's something to discuss. There's a game every night and
normally nothing happens, and we just kind of watch in
the back of your head. It's on, you're listening whatever,
it's just white noise, and then all of a sudden,

you heard Stephen Nelson last night.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Oh my god. And Freddy's carcass is laid out.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
We'll get to that, but don't act like I can't
talk about it because everybody loves Freddie Freeman so much.
I love Freddy Freeman too, But it did look kind
of like he fell through a hole in the earth,
which is funny. I'm sorry. All right, did you guys
know that Montabello is the oldest European settlement in all

of La County?

Yeah, so a lot of people are like, you know,
I don't like your colonials. This is the first place
that they squatted down in the late seventeen hundreds and
built a mission, and it was the most fruitful mission. Now,
they only had it for like three years and they
got flooded out and they moved it over to another town.
But Montabello has a deep, deep history, and we'll get

into it throughout the show. I was hoping to get
here early enough to visit a special site. But where
at the corner of Washington Boulevard and South Bluff Road.

Do you guys know where that is? I wanted to go?

I might go there after the show because there's two
cannons there from a battle in the Mexican American War,
which which is in Montabello has a rich history in
that and I did not know that, and I was
excited to hear about that.

But did you guys know this.

That Mantabello in March of twenty twenty three had an
EF one tornado hit the city. Where any of you
guys here for that? When the tornado hit in twenty
twenty three?
Speaker 4 (09:23):
What happened?
Speaker 3 (09:25):
It damaged seventeen structures. Well, number one, you just you know,
when you're running around in La and like getting off
the sixty, you don't expect to be hit by a tornado.
It's just not you know, And it never almost never
happens in La County. Now you've been to Oklahoma City,
I've been to Homeiworkholme, So yeah, I've been in Oklahoma
(09:47):
and Norman, Oklahoma. I've been Stillwater, Oklahoma. And I remember
flying out of the airport at Oklahoma City. They sell
t shirts at the airport like we sell T shirts.
At the Hollywood Sign, they had a T shirt of
a tornado and it said bring it. And I was
kind of like, you know, I don't I don't see
how that, you know, like standing in front of a

tornado and saying bring it. I don't care who you are.
I mean, it's a bad I don't care. I mean
you could be Tony Mandrich. It's a bad idea.

I bet you that wasn't a best selling T shirt.

Dear, lot of funny though. I was like, this is
what you're proud of.

But uh, the tornado that hit here damaged seventeen structures.

Well, no way, the twenty twenty three EF one tornado,

It was the strongest.

Tornado or as they called it here in Manabello, tornado
just strike the Los Angeles metro area since nineteen eighty three,
ninety to one.

Hundred mile per hour whins.

And it touched down on the sixty over there and
Whittier Boulevard where the girls are prettier and wittier and
at tracked a short path of about a mile and
went through parts of the city that does not often happen,
but it happened in the great city of Montabello. Also,
there was a UFO siding here in the fifties that

we don't need to No, there was, but we don't
need to get into it.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
That's fine.
Speaker 3 (11:38):
But I will have more on the Mexican American War
battle that was in Montabello a little bit later in
the show. So you sit tight if you were like
I'm going to leave, pick up my kid from school, No,
call your tea or whatever, get somebody to pick them

Freddy Freeman fell into the dugout and what were your feelings.

Well, my first thought was, you don't and you said
it earlier, you don't see that very often. So I'm
wondering if because those guys all have awareness of where
they're out on the field, where the wall is, where
the fences and propioception, so I'm wondering if, like there's
usually guys standing at the top of those stairs. And
so when he was tracking that foul ball because no

one was at the top of the stairs, did he
think that he wasn't near the top of the stairs.
But it was unusual to see a guy that's been
around how many years he been the league fifteen years? Yeah,
to do that. Let's hope he's okay, But that was
a nasty fall.

Well, he's a.

Big guy, yea too, and that's a longer way to fall,
there's no doubt about it. But the thing that kind
of weirded me out about it was and God bless him,
today was oral Herscheizer Day and he got his star
on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and all that. But
Oral and Steven Nelson were like, what did anybody catch him?
And It's like, well, first of all, there was nobody
(13:26):
over there. There was nobody there to catch him. Are
they supposed to run over and dive and catch him
like it was a baby.
Speaker 4 (13:33):
Well, that's what I'm saying. Is it unusual for there
to be nobody over there? I don't know, because he
ran like he didn't even stop and look he was
on a full run down those stairs.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
Yeah. And you know, I've seen this in the past.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
You see a guy score a touchdown and then like
jump over a partition and he falls into like the
steeplechase pit or something like that. That actually happened. We
were playing a game right down the road. We were
doing seven on seven Carson Palmer. When during college football
in the summer, you're not allowed to have coaches, and
if there's a ball, you have strength coaches, but you

can't have football coaches that sit there and tell you
how to play football. You have to do it yourself.
So the quarterback usually organizes that stuff. And we were
playing at La City College against the La City College guys,
just doing seven on seven. But we had our team,
you know, Carson Palmer, our receivers and all that. And
I remember Carson Palmer hit Windrell Hayes, a very good
(14:30):
receiver transferred from San Jose State, and he caught it,
and then he took like three steps and he disappeared.
He fell into the steeplechase pit that was beyond the
end zone. And it was horrifying, because, I mean, what
are we going to say. We were playing seven on
seven at La City College with a very elite receiver
(14:51):
and he fell into the steeplechase pit and now he
can't play the football season.
Speaker 2 (14:55):
He ended up being okay. But baseball's like that.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
All these stadiums, actually older ones like Dodger Stadium, they
have all kinds of weird nooks and crannies and things
that could happen. But first of all, you're never supposed
to help the opponent in baseball. It's an unwritten rule,
that's what they say. Even though the Royals are like
one of the worst teams, they're still competing. It's still
a pro baseball team. And then the other side of
(15:19):
it was there was nobody there to catch them, even
if they wanted to there was nobody there.
Speaker 4 (15:24):
It's so unusual. I'm just even if guys wanted to
help them and they have been over on that side,
you just don't see that. So they probably would have
reacted slowly to that. Anyway, I would imagine you don't
see that. But it was an interesting moment.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
But for the Dodgers, it was a big moment because
they completed the sweep of the Kansas City Royals. Everybody's
happy about that. Nobody liked seeing the Dodgers lose a
bunch of games. Well everybody that's not in us, you know,
our world or our geo fence of the Dodger games
on a FI seventy, not everybody rooting for the Dodgers down.
(15:59):
But do you do you think of that as a
villainous franchise. We had a big interview with Mookie Betts
earlier in the week where we discussed that and the
clip went viral.
Speaker 4 (16:07):
Well, what I thought was interesting when they got scooball
and then they were in the midst of that losing streak.
You just wonder if other teams out all these other
teams want to beat the Dodgers, But I think they
want to beat them even more now, just because they
go get whoever they want and spend whatever they want.
And so I think if you're a professional baseball player
(16:28):
and you've been in the league, you're kind of like
f these guys, man, they get everybody. They've won it
the last two years. So I don't think they're a
villainous friend. Now, I have a bunch too many nice guys. Yeah,
but I think that I would guess other players around
the league are like, they're going to win it every
year because they have the ability to go spend and
get whoever they want, which is great for Dodger fans.

But I just think players around the league are probably like,
this is bs.

did for Bob Iger and Josh Kushner to buy the

next few weeks, I'm sure, and the Dodgers very much
involved because it's Mark Walter who sold the team. So

Well, there were no Royals players or staff around really
to try to catch Freddy because those steps you are
right there at the far end of the business dugout,
which basically separates the camera well from the dugout, and
so there's really nowhere for anybody to be to try
to catch Freddy. Those two trainers tried to, but it

was too late. And when I saw him go down
like that, I instantaneously remembered move On the brand new
Angel at the time in nineteen ninety nine, trying to
make the same play, going down the visitors dugout and
severely spraining his right ankle. Was somehow able to hit
thirty three home runs for the Angels that year, but

it was an auspicious beginning to a big time contract.
And luckily for the Dodgers, Freddy did not bang his
head on the floor. He just said he was really
sore from head to toe. Tomorrow. Don't be alarmed tomorrow,
because tomorrow was a scheduled day off for Freddie Freeman.
But he's in there today and we are seeing two
Dodgers come out right now to face Rock Stewart, and

they are not named Will Smith, Alex Fall and Hunter Faducca.
So we are still waiting for Will Smith to take
betting practice on the field this Homestand.

Is that how bad of a sign is that for
Will Smith's return, Dave? Or is it just whatever information's out.

Today, it's the plan, it's whatever the plan was. The
plan was not for him to face Brock Stewart today.

Yeah, Dave, I wanted to get back to Freddie Freeman
because it's interesting that he's been in the league for
so long, He's played a million games at first base.
You don't see that play very often. Reference mo Vaughn
it happened too. But what has he talked about or
said anything today about how it happened last night?

He talked after the game last night, and you know,
Freddie was in great spirits, which gave everybody relief. And
he even said last night I'm hoping to play today
and he's in the starting lineup like we reported. But
he said basically, he didn't know there wasn't a railing
right there. He never looked to see where the railing was,
and when he stepped, he thought he was going to

be stepping, you know, his last step on the dirt,
but instead it was one of the steps leading down
into the dugout. And he said, the new renovations here.
If you haven't been here, you're not familiar with the setup.
There's that one flat of stairs that he fell down,
and then there's a second flat of stairs down into

the Royals Clubhouse. He landed on that flat area that
is between those two set of stairs. It could have
been a lot lear if he would have gone down
another set of five or six stairs. So he credited
him being able to land on that flack round and
also since the staircase was right behind him. He did

not bang the back of his head because his head
kind of went into that open space between the ground
and the next set of stairs.

Dave, tell us a little bit about this series and
what you expect, because after the Dodgers had a terrible
ten days, they've beat up on a much lesser team
in the Royals, though the Royals gave him a pretty
good run at it.
Speaker 2 (28:55):
What do you expect in this one?
Speaker 5 (28:58):
Well, the Brewers are limping into this series. They just
got swept by the San Diego Padres and did not
score many runs, so they're not playing their best coming
out of San Diego. In this four game series, the
Brewers are throwing three lefties at the Dodgers, including tonight
Shane Dronin and on Sunday one of their better lefties,
(29:18):
Logan Henderson, and on Saturday, a nationally televised game, the
miss Jacob Mazerowski will be on the mound for the
Brewers against the Dodgers, so they're throwing for their best
pitchers against the Dodgers, at least three of their four
best pitchers. Harrison pitched in San Diego, did not pitch twelve,
but the Brewers are throwing three of their best, including
(29:39):
Miserowski on Saturday, so we'll see what the Dodger offense
can do against them. The Dodgers have Roki tonight, Yamamoto tomorrow,
they got they got Scooble on Sunday, so they're throwing
a lot of They're really good pitchers in this series
as well.
Speaker 4 (29:56):
I thought it was interesting Dave coming off that losing
streak they had last week or the week before, and
Dave Roberts talking about having more of a sense of
urgency from the players, him managing with more of a
sense of urgency. I don't follow this obviously as close
as you do, but I don't recall Dave Roberts talking
like that with this much time to go in the
regular season.
Speaker 5 (30:16):
No, he usually doesn't speak that way publicly, And I
think that sent a message similar to the way Phil
Jackson used to send messages through the media. Dave Roberts
sent a message to his team through the media, and
now with social media, the message gets to these guys
loud and clear right away because they see everything. So
(30:38):
him saying it's time to go. On top of the
fact that Miguel Rojas told us last week that after
the Dodgers lost their seventh in a row, he used
the players only group text to remind them that the
sprint should start now, to lock it in. So they
had the team leader in the clubhouse tell them to
lock it in and focus and let's change our approach.
(31:00):
And they had the managers say the same thing. So
we started to see that more in that Royal series,
and that was a good, for lack of better term,
training ground to get ready for not only this four
game series against the Brewers, but as Rojas put it
in that text, the sprint for the rest of the season.
Speaker 3 (31:18):
Dave, we didn't talk to you yesterday. You had some responsibilities.
But Snell Zilla, your favorite pitcher in the history of
the world. Blake Snell, two time cy Young Award winner,
had ten strikeouts and looked about as good as he
possibly could with not a lot of run support.
Speaker 2 (31:34):
The other night.
Speaker 3 (31:35):
What were your thoughts on that and what was the
aftermath like and what do you expect going forward, especially
with scoobl on the team.
Speaker 5 (31:43):
Now, yeah, I would say that Schooble being on this
team is really good for the Dodgers because it's going
to push Blake Snell to prove that he's a better pitcher.
Speaker 4 (31:53):
Than Derek Scooble.
Speaker 5 (31:55):
And I know people, I've told people this in the
press box even before Snow made that story the other night.
At his best, he's number one, far and away more
talented than Schoogle is, and number two at his best
when he's healthy, he's better than Schooble. Scooble's a really
good pitcher that is more available than Snell. And as
(32:17):
you guys know in sports and life, availability is number one.
So if Snell can put it together at some point
where he pitches a full season, when he does, he
wins the cy Young. If he can do that next year,
I think you're going to see that for a full year.
But I mean, let's look at this, guys. Blake Snell
had ten strikeouts in his first start, basically his only
(32:39):
start this season, and Trek Scouble in two starts has
combined for twelve strikeouts. I think if you watch the
game the other night and you watch Schooble so far
with the Dodgers, there's no argument that Snell was more
dominant in any one of Schooble's first who starts with
the Dodgers.
Speaker 4 (32:57):
I think what you were looking for, Dave, is the
best ability is availability. That's what you were certaing. There
we go the interesting day, even though you weren't on
it last night, Dave on TV, I did watch the
pregame show and they had Blake Snell on and I
thought it was very interesting, Like and I know he's
had some injuries, but the guys won TUSI youngs he's
won a world championship, but he was talking almost like
(33:17):
he was a second or third year guy. Explained more
because you've gotten to know him, Like how competitive this
guy is, because it really came through last night and
watching him with the guys on the set.
Speaker 5 (33:29):
He's pitching with the chip on his shoulder. He knows
there's a lot of critics out there that take shots
at him, and he always feels like he never gets
his due respect, and that's why he talks the way

If ever, he's supposed to throw a bullpen session here
in the next week, So that's going to be very
telling because the last time he threw a bullpen session

shut him down because the left knee was too sore.
So once he throws that bullpen session and he wakes

up the next morning and he throws another bullpen session,
we'll have a better idea whether or not he's going
to pitch again this year. So until he throws that
bullpen session, nobody can say for certainty, including Otani himself,
whether or not he's going to pitch again this year.

so you'll be able to watch a former Bruin kick
the ball. I think he's now walking off the field,
and there's a dude by the name of Freeman kicking
some field goals in a Texans uniforms, so maybe they're
going to have a backup kicker. Cam Dicker is kicking

for the Chargers right now, and it looks like his
parents are on the sideline and his mom's got a
very clever shirt that says mother Dicker, he kicked me first.
Very clever.

I thought you were putting that interesting.

The big name we're going to be watching is, of course,
their first round pick at Kem Mazador fled to the
twenty fifth pick. Not sure why he ended up, you know,
wrecking the playoffs and helping Miami reach that championship game
and darn near win a national championship. He has been
an absolute course throughout training camp, so he's probably number
ninety is going to be the one that we're going
to be the most excited to see. Starters aren't going
(40:41):
to play that's aren't going to play. So that's probably
you know, these young rookies led by that him and
the fourth round pick out of Mississippi State, their fourth
two receiver, fourth two forty receiver, Brendan Thompson. So there's
some excitement there.
Speaker 4 (40:55):
You just said the starters weren't going to play. I
was going to ask you about Herbert what what's the
expectation for him this year? Matt He's taken a little
bit incoming with the playoff performance and not being able
to get over the hump, and like, where is he at?
What's he talked about heading into this season here in
the preseason?
Speaker 6 (41:14):
Well, I don't think I've ever seen an offensive coordinator higher.
He celebrated so much, if he talked about so much.
But with Mike McDaniel, you know, getting let go by
the Dolphins coming in to bring that Shanahan offense, people
are excited. They think that you know, it's going back
to his rookie season when Shane Stichin was here, you know,
(41:35):
and he basically broke every rookie record except maybe one
or two that Andrew Luck still holds that he hasn't
really had a good run with ocs. It's just, you know,
they're not necessarily guys that you think of when you
think of the top of the list of who you'd
want to hire. So I think there's a lot of
I don't know, I'm going to call it excuse making,
but people saying, Okay, this, this is an opportunity for
(41:56):
him to really show the league. You know that he
can put up MV level numbers, you know, to going
back to back eleven wins season. So yeah, the expectations
are incredibly high, and I would assume the pressure from
the national media is going to be incredibly high for him.
Speaker 3 (42:11):
Do you really expect to see anything fancy or impactful
from McDaniel's offense tonight, Matt or are they you know
how the preseason is, for God's sakes?
Speaker 6 (42:22):
Yeah, I asked them that, because you know, they're playing
the text all three of their opponents they play in
the regular season, the Texans, the forty nine ers in
the rants. So I said, I asked them, what do
you do in that situation? And he said, look, my
stuff's on film, It's on tape. Anybody can watch what
I do. He goes, We're not going to do anything.
You know that I would consider to be I'm holding
back to try to catch someone off star. He's like,
(42:43):
but I'm going to run my offense. We're going to
run some motions. And then he said, look, my favorite
thing to do is call place what I like doing
more than anything else. So I intend to call, you know,
the plays that I would probably typically call in a game.
So that's he's been a thing. It's not going to
be vanilla. You know, you're going to see some of
the stuff that he gets really creative with, especially in
the run game. I don't think you're gonna see a

lot if any of them are in Hampton, so it'll
probably be more I'm Kamanie by Dell to kind of
show off that part of the game. And that's kind
of the way he put it to me though, was that, Yeah,
I'm gonna I'm gonna kind of call what people expect
me to call, because you know, like last year, I mean,
Greg Roman called nothing. It was back up to the
backups offensive line, and they just ran the ball like
(43:24):
crazy with no bells and whistles. So I get the
sense maybe it's gonna be a little more exciting the
summer round.
Speaker 4 (43:30):
The bigger question Matt Is McDaniel going to bring that
South Beach fashion yeah to the Chargers this year?
Speaker 2 (43:38):
Oh yeah, Oh yeah.

I mean you know Jim Harbaugh wears the exact same
thing every day, right, I mean, just keen. Not only
on the field, don he wears team issue gear out
on the town. Whenever you see photos of like Harball
with people in the grocery store, he's in a Chargers polo.
He's in Chargers, the Kakis. Mike McDaniel is wearing like
Bolin Siaga shoes with I don't know whatever the tom

or tom Ford shoes with Balinciaga capri pants. Yeah, he
is full Southeast style. You will see that on the sideline.
He's not going to be in the booth. He's going
to be on the sideline. And I'm sure if you're
watching the game on TV, as you heard the sixty
minute warning behind me, in sixty minutes, no doubt you'll
see some high fashion that I know you can really appreciate. Don,
like stuff that you have around the house.

I did it so early that I went into the
meal room before anybody was there, got you know, little
little protein kind of recover there, and started chatting with
some folks. The next thing I knew there were probably
thirty or forty NFL players while I'm sitting there in
a tank top, and finally had someone come up to
