San Antone for the NBA Finals and watching the way
this has played out pretty remarkable and what a scene
last night.

shared many iconic moments in the NBA Finals with his
teammates and with the city of Los Angeles. James Worthy
on the Petrosen Money Show. What's cracking?

James? How are you?

Hello? Hello? Hello? What is going on? And New York City?
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Now, you didn't make it to New York. You said
you were in San Antonio. You said you were going
to avoid New York because people were a little too
geeked up. And it's almost like you were I saw
the future there, James, because they are pretty geeed up
in New York. It isn't going crazy in New York City,
but you know a lot. The first thing that jumped
(03:22):
out to Charles Barkley last night was obviously you know
the way the Spurs collapsed and not the greatness of
New York and in your mind as a basketball analyst
and being who you are, what was the first thing
that came to your mind when you watched that comeback?
Speaker 5 (03:36):
The collapse. I didn't even the victory was amazing for
the New York fans, And I'm not taking anything away
from that comeback and how poised they were and how
they able to really take advantage of what san Antonio
was not doing. And so for basketball player to see,

you know, it's okay to have a twenty nine point
lead narrow down to fifteen, but to see a complete
collapse of nervousness and shock value and not being able
to do the things that they can do. I saw
it when they were up fifteen. It came from like
(04:21):
twenty five to fifteen points, and I said, at that point,
I said, they're in trouble because they're playing the lead.
When you have a lead, you got to keep the
foot on the gas. You got to kill them, you
gotta cut them twice three times. You got to sweep
the leg. And they didn't do that. And you could
see that when it got to fifteen, they even knew.

They see this is from experience. You can feel it.
You can feel like something leave you and it's hard
to get it back, and you start getting tentative, you
start turning the ball over, you start putting it in
someone's else's hands. And you know, with a young team
like that, they're very good what they did to Oklahoma,
(05:03):
but still they are inexperienced. And I think, you know,
like Fox, you know, look, it looked like a clear layup,
and I don't think anybody would have done anything different.
But with eight seconds or nine seconds, you might be
thinking about drilling it out and getting away from the
defense and not challenging a shot blocker. But that's in hindsight.
(05:27):
Everything happened way before the last three minutes of that game.
They kind of lost their map, They lost their map,
and New York just did what they do.

Yeah, I'm glad you mentioned that, James, because I thought, look,
far be it from me to question Charles Barkley's basketball analysis.
But I don't think dearon Fox. Maybe he did, but
I don't think he felt og behind him. If he did,
I don't think he would have taken the layup. I
think he had what he thought was a path and
he probably figured the second I go past this hoop,
I'm gonna get fouled. It's going to maybe be an

extra second off the clock, and now I've got to
make two free throws versus what I think is a
wide open layup that's going to put us up three,
as opposed to two free throws that would put us
up three.

Like I thought, I don't know.

You tell me, was that an egregious error by him,
a guy that won the NBA's Clutch Award this year,
to not dribble that out and maybe take a second
or two more off the clock, or do you maybe
see some of that in what he was trying to do.
Speaker 5 (06:26):
I think it's just fans and former players like myself
who were not in this situation, you know, trying to
second guess, you know, and I should know better than
the second guest. That's a wide open lay up to him,
thought he had it, But I just think, you know,
for me, when I got that ball at half quarter
(06:46):
wherever he got it, I'd mean for me, I don't know,
I'm probably would have gone to do the same thing
he did, So you can't blame it for But you're
thinking you might want to dribble it out, stop the clock,
it's a free time out. It was it wasn't the
Fox play that that It was that the game was
way removed from San Antonio before that. They just start

turning the ball over, you could, they start looking at
it one another. They thought they had the game. And
when you think you have the games, it's something that
leaves your body. The competition leads, your alertness, leaves, your
finishing touches, leave you forget to put the icing on
the cake. All that kind of leaves when you think
(07:30):
you have a game, when there's minutes left on the clock.
And that's what happened to them. It collapsed.

Yeah, the you know, there's like you said, there's there's
two sides to it. There's the collapse. Obviously, it's a collapse.
It's the largest lead lost in an NBA Finals game
in history. But then there is, of course, the flip side.
The Knicks have to figure out how to dig out
of a twenty nine point hole. They have to figure
out how to have enough energy at the end of
the game in order to finish it off. We oftentimes

will see teams cut into a but then they end
up coming up short because they're so tired, and you
typically have to have a catalyst, right. It was certainly
og Ananobe, but it's also it's also Jalen Brunson and
a guy that made you know, five shots, five of
his eight shots in the fourth quarter. H What is
it like? What is it on a team, James, when

you have maybe that that go to guy that you
just trust implicitly. How much does that sort of change
your mentality your belief that you can come back when
you have someone like Brunson that can put up fourteen points,
you know, from the floor in a quarter.

I think it's the Kobe Bryant mentality. The Kobe Bryant
is you know assassin. Kobe could go oh for eighteen
and you know he could go nine to eleven the
last five minutes of a ball game. You just that's
your mentality. You think that way. You think you're unstoppable,
you think you can get your shot off, and that's
(08:56):
the way Bronson stink. They did a pretty good job
on him for the most part. They got physical with him,
they made him in half court. But he's figured it out.
He's he's always going to try to figure it out.
He can get to his left, he hit slowers. He's
a shot maker, so he's not afraid of the moment
and he hit a big three. I mean it was
a big three what they needed. I think he took

him ahead, it was deep. He just he's he's that
type of player. He's a believer. I think, you know,
mental mistakes like who's who's ever taking the ball out
of bounds. That's one of the most dangerous player on
the court. So when Anonobe took it out of bounds,
you got to you got to pay attention to him.
(09:38):
And when Fox left him to go double, the shot
ain't even gone up yet. I was like, oh my god,
he's he's leaving one of the best shooters on the
team wide up. All Bronson had to do was throw
it over there. It was a wide open shot, but
he took the shot. And I just don't think at
that point with two three seconds, you got to make
him make a tough shot. You don't double him. I

don't think it close to half court. So there's just
there's so many things that san Antonio is going to
look at, and this is twice that it's happened to
him and they've been able to snap back. So we'll see,
we'll see what happened. A lot of mistakes, a lot
of mistakes in Game four. I mean I'm sorry, yeah,
Game four, the Great James Worthy, Yeah, I'm sorry. Yeah,

I don't mind it. It's going both ways as long

But the physicality is that's part of the playoffs. You're
playing one team for seven games. It's gonna get physical.
