Why didn't you? Oh, thank you, Dave. That was very nice.
Thank you. Actually I love a Hello Kitty backpack. Thank you, Dave.
That's not the one I wanted. That's like you.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
Your wife takes you to the Louis Vauton to get
a person. You buy her a keychain, but I will
take it. What did you say about the red one?
Thank you? No, you didn't want to sell it. It's
a hot item. I will buy that one day. You
son up a bitch.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
That's my mona, Lisa.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
The giant Chance Sport backpack is the dumbest thing I've
ever seen in my life. What a giant piece. That's
like I haven't years ago, somebody bought my son, you know,
when he was a baby, like a bear the size
of the raider guy in the front row like a
stuffed bear, and oh, it's like, yeah, the bear is

(03:01):
like and now it's just like in the corner of
some room, it looks like a dead man. You know,
every time you walk into the room in like the
middle of the night, you're like, oh, you know it
just it's terrible.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
Anyway, thank you for being here, everybody.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
We got Dodgers, Roki Sasaki, he's gonna pitch at seven
to ten, David Vasse Hour intrepid Dodger reporter, will have
Dave Roberts on the pregame show, and Tim Kats you
got a little indigestion, You're gonna.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
Be all right? Are you sure? Because I have some
essential oil. No, I'm not kidding.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
This will help because I see I don't want look it,
I don't want to I don't want to lose somebody
like Bill Schwartzky's you know what I mean. Like, I know, look,
I get it, you've been going hard. But that's what
I always say. People come on, you know, they show
up early and they go hard, and it's a three
hour show. You gotta pace yourself in great sports talk
otherwise you don't have anything left for the fourth corner

(03:55):
time and you look like Djokisch, all tired in the
fourth order. All right, I promise this, and I'm very
excited about it, and I hope you guys are excited
about it too. I did a lot of research, and
I left a little. I got caught in some traffic
on the sixty East. But if I didn't, I was
going to see these cannons, and I might go do

(04:18):
it right over here. I might do it right after
the show. It is time, It's free effect.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
It's the Yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
Three fun facts, final, our fun fact.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
Don Can I have some Spanish music? Perhaps? Thank you, Ronnie?
Well done.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
January eighth, eighteen forty seven, the second to last battle
of the Mexican American War was fought at the ford
of the San Gabriel River and what is today known
as modern day Monte Bellum, podcast Whittier or bitch Ass

(05:04):
Pico Rivera Pico Rivera, the home of the Dowray Restaurant,
one of the greatest restaurants, and the home of Randy

(05:27):
Flores a great picture.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
It actually was in parts of Montabello, Pico and Whittier.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
The battle in the Mexican American War, General Stephen Kearney
blew up Mexican general Jose Maria Flores Kearnie had six
hundred dudes. Jose Maria had three hundred and fifty Mexicans
on his side. So six hundred white dudes on what

(05:58):
right over here?

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Right over here? Six hundred white dudes.

Speaker 3 (06:03):
Three hundred and fifty Mexicans squared up at the ford
of the river. One extra thing that the Americans had
was a giant howitzer. Not good for the Mexicans. Both
sides lost like three dead guys.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
That's it, that's it.

Speaker 3 (06:25):
Both had twelve wounded. Floridas retreated. And where do you
retreat if you're here and you're getting your ass kicked?
Just think of a friend you have. Somebody in Montapello's
getting you know, devicted, wife's leaving them caught a case,
where do they go? The same place Floridas went, Vernon.

(06:49):
He ran, He was chased by the American army to
the city of Vernon. Of course it wasn't called Vernon
back then, and they took back and reoccupied after they'd
won that battle. A day later, the Pueblo of Los
Angeles and raised the American flag at Crypto Arena.

Speaker 4 (07:11):
No no.

Speaker 1 (07:14):
Over. The pueblo now.

Speaker 3 (07:18):
The battle in Vernon was called the Battle of La Mesa,
and that was the last time.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
Mex thing about that.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
That was the last time eighteen forty seven that Mexico
controlled Los Angeles. Now, I know you're thinking that can't
be true, because I'm in La right now and I
feel very Mexican. So let's just say it was the

(07:48):
last time Mexico controlled Los Angeles.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
In theory.

Speaker 3 (07:54):
And here in Montabello there is a memorial of that
key battle at washing is Washington Boulevard and South Bluff Road.
There are two cannons and a plaque, and you can
go read about the Mexican American War in Montabello's history.

(08:17):
But just remember the American soldiers were they got blown
out of La. The American soldiers, they got run out
of La like three years before. And where did they
go to regroup? Where anybody goes to regroup if you
get blown out of Los Angeles, San Diego. They went
down to San Diego and they regrouped. They came back

(08:39):
up I guess, you know, probably the fifteen and they
showed up here and they beat up the Mexicans here,
and then they beat them up in Vernon, and they
raised the flag at the Crypto Arena, and we have
an American government today because of it.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
So that is today's final hour. Fun fact, I'm very
proud of it.

Speaker 3 (09:00):
Thank you. Hold on, Pete, thank you. I might drive
over to the Cannons. I'll be available for pictures over there.
If anybody has like a Union Army outfit to put
on for some reenactments, I'd be into that too. If
somebody wants to wear a Mexican outfit and I'll where
their American outfit, we can fight it out with Baymet's
iron sharpens iron, I'd be into that too.

Speaker 1 (09:21):
All right, Ronnie, it's hide for quick hits.

Speaker 6 (09:23):
Let's be ms quick hitch, I'll make it quick. Mexican
Army could have hit in that red backpack too.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
Oh yeah, least a couple of them.

Speaker 3 (09:35):
The Dodgers are seventy three and forty eight. They're at
home tonight versus the Brewers. Rookie Sasaki's on the mound.
Brewers are fresh off getting swept in San Diego, so
they're limping in and the Dodgers aren't.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
They just swept Kansas City.

Speaker 3 (09:50):
They still have the best record in the National League,
and Freddie Freeman is in the lineup tonight and back
feeling a little bit better, but he will have a
scheduled off day. As David Vasse told us a little
bit earlier, he will have a scheduled off day tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (10:08):
Former Notre Dame Sherman Oaks.

Speaker 3 (10:10):
High school standout and Cincinnati reds ace Hunter Green has
undergone Tommy John surgery for the second time, and we'll
miss the remainder of this season and all of twenty
twenty seven. He's only twenty seven and he made just
five starts this year. We talked about it with Don McClain.

(10:36):
The NBA schedule came out today. The Lakers have thirty
four nationally televised games. They have fourteen back to backs.
They opened the series versus the Golden State Warriors, followed
by the Clippers. They opened the season that way. They're
going to play the Clippers twice in the first week
of the season.

Speaker 1 (10:55):
Yeah, how about that?

Speaker 3 (10:56):
And the long road trip is the seven game Grammy
road Trip. The Lakers have three five game home stands.
The Clippers. There's that one guy that loves the Clippers here,
there he is. The Clippers open up the season against
the Sacramento Kings on October twenty first, at the end

(11:17):
to It Dome. They only have eight nationally televised games
and still no update on the aspiration Steve Balmer Kawhi
Leonard investigation. Is there a chance they start the season
and Kawhi Leonard's a Clipper?

Speaker 1 (11:32):
I think there's a chance. I think it's more likely.

Speaker 6 (11:34):
How for the NBA lets that happen. Yeah, I think
they're hoping they wait long enough. It just gets swept
under the rug. But I think it's going to be
more penalties against the Clippers than against Kawhi Leonard.

Speaker 3 (11:47):
And Kawhi Leonard even though you heard the new scoreboard
stuff and all the other stuff, you think he's going
to be in a Toronto Jersey to start this season?

Speaker 1 (11:54):
Probably?

Speaker 4 (11:55):
I do.

Speaker 1 (11:56):
I mean it is pretty wacky start.

Speaker 3 (11:59):
The charge are in Houston, they take on the Texans.
Is anybody watching that game?

Speaker 1 (12:07):
Sean?

Speaker 3 (12:10):
That just shows what kind of town this is. The
Raiders aren't even in this They're not even in this
state anymore. How come you guys don't like the Chargers? Man,
didn't you hear Matt come on and talk about how
great Herbert is and how great the offense is going
to be in the special pedal pusher pants that the

(12:30):
offensive coordinator wears.

Speaker 1 (12:33):
You guys didn't hear that.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
That doesn't impress you at all, you guys, ma'am, he
presses you, ma'am. All right, Still, I think it tells
you a little story about who has a foothold in
town when the Raiders are on instead of the Chargers.
Tim Kats has that one for pre half in posts.
The Rams play the Chiefs this weekend in their first

(12:55):
preseason game. Matthew Stafford, Puka Nakua, and Miles Garrett will
not play. Who goes bothered by a sore groin? Garrett's
bothered by a sore need in practice today. Stetson Bennett
the quarterback they're going to start against the Chiefs on Saturday,

(13:15):
with Ty Simpson the new pick, expected to play. I
know you're excited about UCLA football down I am. Yeah,
Kenny Chesney the new coach. I'm sure you've gotten some emails.
As an alum, you know, I want.

Speaker 1 (13:32):
To transition from country music into college football.

Speaker 3 (13:36):
They're happening there in Irvine this week at Great Park.
The Bruins kickoff the season September fifth at cal. Cal
has a great quarterback in Socapolo. Today it'll be two
Heisman Trophy quarterback hopefuls against each other in nico Ia
Malaiaba and Sogapolo today head to head usc IS. In

(14:00):
week zero they play my San Jose State Spartans. We
are the yours because Kenny Mia Matalolo, former Navy coach
and head coach of the San Jose State Spartans. It's
a dear friend of mine, gotcha and I have him.
In Week three, sky Clark is back at UCLA. The
former UCLA guard announced his commitment to LSU. So he's

(14:26):
back in the NCAA. But he's not back at UCLA.

Speaker 1 (14:29):
I'm not for five years corrections and retractions.

Speaker 3 (14:34):
He's going to play another year of college hoops after
a Colorado federal grand jury granted a preliminary indune that
provided athletes from twenty twenty two recruiting class an additional
year of eligibility.

Speaker 1 (14:49):
Blue college basketball wide open again.

Speaker 3 (14:51):
Sky Clark average eleven and a half points last season
for UCLA. Donovan Debt is also looking to play a
fifth year. However, he was not decided on where he
wants to play this season. I don't think UCLA wants
after retiring. Does UCLA want either of them?

Speaker 6 (15:08):
I think they would want Dan, although Trent Pierre's probably
ready to take over the main that main role.

Speaker 1 (15:14):
We'll see what happens. Depends on how much money you want,
is that part of it. Yeah?

Speaker 3 (15:23):
After this, we got like two more segments and afterwards
I suggest we all pull our cash, go over there
with a fistful of cash and just shove.

Speaker 1 (15:33):
It at that guy.

Speaker 3 (15:34):
Just overwhelm him and take the Jan Sport and then
probably get pulled over somewhere around Brea. We'll do the
Dead and Alive Guy Birthday of the Day and Petrosen
Money continues on AMPHI seventy La sparks.

Speaker 7 (15:54):
You're home with the Dodgers, thanks for being there. Must
this is petros and money.

Speaker 1 (16:10):
To mand demand demand mad.

Speaker 4 (16:16):
Is that it?

Speaker 1 (16:17):
For the prizes? We still got prize to give away.

Speaker 3 (16:20):
Once the TV went to that big white guy in
the back, some people got discouraged and laughed. The cookie
monster with indigestion laughed, Solo Sports Prize hooker laughed. A
couple other people laughed. But God bless you if you've
stayed the Petrosen money show is Still Alive from Mantalla,

(16:41):
the home of the end of the Mexican American War
in eighteen forty seven on the One and Only Don
McLean is here, and we had a very inebriated and
kind of wealthy for our standards listener. Go over there, Vincent,

(17:02):
and he offered the lady, there's a giant Jan sport
backpack in like a back to school place across the way.
We're in a mall, and I said, I want that backpack.
Dave Weese went over there, our promotions guy and star
vice president here at iHeart Media, kind of a big wheel,

(17:22):
and Dave went over there and demanded the backpack, and
they wouldn't sell it to him, so he'd bought me
a Hello Kiddy backpack, which I really appreciated. But then
Vincent went over there and he was like determined, you know,
and like a guy, you know, ready to spend billions
at Southerbeast, and he offered fifteen hundred bucks for the
red backpack, and the lady was defiant. She sat there

(17:44):
and said no, and he screamed at her drunkenly and
said to the publicity that you'll receive and she still
said no, so no backpack for us.

Speaker 1 (17:57):
But man, to have that backpack.

Speaker 3 (18:01):
Would almost be like having like owning the Eiffel Tower
to me, like that, that's a hell of a bad Yeah,
Like you show up with that backpack at the club,
Who's not going home with you?

Speaker 4 (18:13):
Right?

Speaker 3 (18:13):
Nineteen ninety seven? You show up at the Cowboy Boogie
on tour tonight with that backpack on?

Speaker 1 (18:21):
Am I wrong?

Speaker 4 (18:23):
No?

Speaker 3 (18:24):
All right, It's time for the dead guy birthday of
the Day. This is one of my favorites. Please bear
with me. Most of you will not be interested in
this story, but I find it very interesting.

Speaker 1 (18:34):
It's time for Jamaican news. It's Jamaica news.

Speaker 3 (18:40):
Seekum Roustin's nothing that wouldn't find Lastmas last but then
eating out Alfred Hitchcock the director and after what is
Jamaican news From Saint Andrew's Parish. A man by the
name of Layton Shirvington would have been seventy six.

Speaker 1 (19:00):
He just died a couple of years ago. Also known as.

Speaker 3 (19:03):
Pluto Shervington, a Jamaican reggae singer, started singing in the
age of sixteen for a band called the Presidents, then
a band called the Hurricanes. Then a band called Tomorrow's Children,
a show band. He started recording songs in papuad.

Speaker 1 (19:19):
You know what that is, don.

Speaker 4 (19:21):
No.

Speaker 3 (19:22):
Potuah is the Jamaican slang language, like when they say
jumping do ale, that's that's in a different language. Yeah, yeah,
that's them, so singing in potua you know. A lot
of the time they used to sing in English to
sell in the UK and stuff like that. But he

(19:43):
sang a song in Papuah and it became popular. And
his most popular song is about a story that his friend,
another singer, Ernie Smith, told him that he witnessed on
his way to the studio. And this is like one
of the most famous songs in Jamaica. And it's such
a stupid song. It's about being on a minibus driving
to work and the mini bus hits and kills a goat.

(20:08):
So the people in the minibus get out, take the goat,
cook the goat, serve it with rice and everybody gets
terrible diarrhea.

Speaker 1 (20:19):
And that is the name of the song. And it
is it is like Kumbai Yah in Jamaica.

Speaker 7 (20:25):
It is.

Speaker 1 (20:26):
They love this song.

Speaker 3 (20:28):
It's called ram Goat Liver and it's about a terrible
bout with diarrhea after eating a road killed goat, And
who doesn't love a song about a road killed goat
immediately cooked and eaten that causes diarrhea. I do this

(20:49):
as a birthday to day Dawn, because I know how
much you enjoy this song and the story of this song.
He has some other hits, like the song bat which
he performed on Top of the Pops in London. Duppy
or Gunman that was another song of his. You guys
know what that means. A duppy in Jamaica is a

(21:10):
ghost or an evil spirit. So is it an evil
spirit or is it a guy with a gun? Duppy
or gunman? Don't overthink it. There's a town in Jamaica.

Speaker 1 (21:20):
Called back a Wall because it's on the back of
that wall. Pluto.

Speaker 3 (21:29):
Shirvington also played mean bass and produced. Moved to Miami
after the success of this song, so right away. He
left Jamaica in nineteen seventy seven and became big in
local music there in Caribbean music festivals.

Speaker 1 (21:42):
He had six kids, ten albums, So what did your
father do? He's very famous.

Speaker 3 (21:49):
He wrote a song about diarrhea that has held the
attention of our country for decades.

Speaker 1 (21:57):
All right, don you got the I do the live guy.

Speaker 6 (22:00):
Birthday of the day and today, Happy fifty fourth birthday
to Kevin Plank. Okay, I know about this, the guy
behind under Armour started under Armour. Under Armour born in Maryland,
grew up around DC. He's a big turp. Played football
in high school but didn't have any offers, so he

(22:21):
walked on at the University of Maryland and he became
a special teams captain. During his time at Maryland, Plank
came up with the idea that would change his life. Apparently,
he hated how cotton t shirts he wore under his
paths became soaked with sweat and became heavy during games.
It's true, noticed that the synthetic compression shorts stayed relatively

(22:43):
dry and wondered why couldn't someone make a football undershirt
out of a similar material.

Speaker 1 (22:51):
So after he.

Speaker 6 (22:51):
Graduated in ninety six from Maryland, he began developing prototypes
and at the age of twenty four started what became
under armed Travel. He traveled around the country selling compression
shirts out of the trunk of his car. One of
the company's first breakthroughs when he got Georgia Tech's football
program to wear under Armour's shirts underneath their paths. Turning

(23:16):
point for under Armour was when Plank used the remaining
twenty five thousand dollars from in their bank account to
put out an advertisement. Remember the old ESPN the magazine. Yes,
and that dramatically changed like what happened resulted in a
million dollars in direct sales. Athletes and teams started buying

(23:37):
the product the product. Under Armours profits grew rapidly from
five million to more than three hundred million in five years.
Within ten years, under Armour reached billion dollar annual revenue
with licensing deals.

Speaker 1 (23:55):
Remember the whole UCLA thing I did? He signed UCLA
to the West Coast flags and all the UCLA kids
are all pissed off about it. Yeah, that fell apart,
Yes it did.

Speaker 6 (24:07):
Plank stepped down is under Oarmor CEO in twenty twenty,
but returned in twenty four when the company's sales dipped.
But he is apparently a billionaire with an estimated net
worth of one point one billion.

Speaker 1 (24:20):
I remember playing when.

Speaker 3 (24:22):
I was at USC We had the like the new thing,
and I played in the late nineties and like the
new thing was like, oh.

Speaker 1 (24:29):
My god, Nike dry fit, the dry fit.

Speaker 3 (24:33):
We can wear the dry fit, and I don't have
to wear my girlfriend swimming and diving T shirt for
good luck under my pads. I can wear something that
makes me feel a little bit more athletic. So they
had that and I'll never forget. And Tino Martinez, I
believe Ortino Dominguez, excuse me, is the last standing equipment

(24:54):
guy at USC from when I was there. And I
remember Tino being like a box of this stuff came
from the East Coast. Is anybody interested? And it was
underarmoor stuff like skull caps and you know the stuff,
and everybody's.

Speaker 1 (25:07):
Like, what's this. It's not Nike, this sucks, and nobody
liked it.

Speaker 3 (25:12):
And then it got popular and everybody liked it, and
then it then it became kind of unpopular again because
I don't think guys like the shoes, and then it
like the sad thing about college football is if you
don't have a Nike contract, everybody, everybody on your team
is angry and sad and butt hurt about it, and
it's not cool. But I remember when I played, you

(25:32):
know what Notre Dame's contract was. It was the most
bootleg thing ever. It was Champion. Yeah they've never champion,
but now everybody's like into champion again. But nobody like
people would be like, I don't want to play a
Notre Dame because a champion. But then the other weird
thing is like Notre Dame football. And this is one
of the weirdest things about college football that I never

(25:53):
realized until somebody pointed it out to me. I was
calling a game at the University of Michigan in the
Big House, which is of course one of the cathedrals
of college football. And I was there and it was
a Western Michigan game, and I was standing with the
Western Michigan coach who's now the coordinator in IOWA offense.
And he said, Tim Lester, great guy. And he said

(26:14):
look around you and I said what. He said, what
do you notice? And it's the Michigan Stadium. I said,
you know, great iconic stadium. What And he said, there's
no advertising. So you look at that Michigan Stadium and
all that the Dodgers take money and advertise and the O'Malleys.
Didn't you know the O'Malleys had the seventy six sign
and a few things. But you look around the big

(26:35):
house and you're like, gosh, darn it, he's right, there
is no there's just the m right. But then they
put the jumpman on the jersey, don't they. And it's
the same thing in Notre Dame. Notre Dame is a
bare naked lady. They don't put anything anywhere.

Speaker 5 (26:52):
You know.

Speaker 1 (26:53):
I mean, it looks cool. You don't notice it until
somebody tells you.

Speaker 3 (26:58):
But when you're in there and you're like, wow, it's
a Notre Dame game and you don't see metros or
you know whatever that is being advertised, it's pretty cool.
But they also, you know, they still like, if you're
gonna go that far, don't put the thing on the
jersey either. But now Notre Dame is going to have
like a Soufi patch or you know whatever, and there's

(27:19):
money involved in it. I wonder, I wonder if Michigan
and or Notre Name will will acquiesce because of the patches,
you know, because like you might as well make the
other twenty million dollars and put advertisement that they will
in the stadium. But it's interesting talking about under armour
because under armour became such a thing and it was

(27:40):
around the time that Maryland football became kind of relevant
under that big fat coach Ralph Frigen. So I do
I do remember that time? Interesting a live guy Birthday
of the Day. I mean, it's no Ramgoat Liver, but
it was good stuff.

Speaker 1 (27:54):
We'll be back.

Speaker 3 (27:58):
We will say good night, join us notches from beautiful
Bjay's Restaurant in brew House and Montabellu. Those of you
that hung in and fought indigestion for the last three hours,
God bless you because you didn't and you're listening on

(28:19):
the way home, God bless you too.

Speaker 1 (28:21):
It's okay.

Speaker 3 (28:22):
But most importantly, God blessed Don McClain for coming out
and co hosting the show and giving people an opportunity
to see him in his long body, and Ronnie Fossil
for holding down in the studio.

Speaker 1 (28:34):
We'll be right back.

Speaker 3 (28:36):
We got more giveaways and then we will say goodnight
from Mantabello and we'll get the Dodger game up and running.

Speaker 4 (28:43):
Thank you for listening, everybody, Southern California's most listened to
sports talk show.

Speaker 1 (28:56):
