going to Toronto, brandon Ingram Grady Dick and some draft

The NBA will not give it the green light until
their investigation into whether or not Kawhi and the Clippers
circumvented the salary cap is completed. Teams announced it today.
Each made their own statement after a green to a
trade on June thirtieth that would send Kawhi to Toronto
for again brandon Ingram Grady Dick a bunch of picks.
Clips in a statement said, it's just from the Clippers

that the trade can quote only be finalized if the
Raptors ownership group assumes the risk of penalties related to
Kawhi's contract that could theoretically result from the ongoing investigation.
Investigation end quote. The Raptors issued their own statements, saying
they would wait for the league's findings rather than assuming
that risk, but they quote remain eager to bring Kawhi

back to Toronto and look forward to a swift resolution

And if you're talking about a kid that's potentially being
talked about for being the number one pick in the draft,
it's like it's different if you're here for Oh, he
could be a first round pick in a year or two.

number one pick, your ears kind of perk up. I'm
planning on kind of getting up to speak because I
haven't seen him, watching a little bit of film, just

because I'm curious. But certainly a really good get for UCLA.
Everybody in the country wanted him, and I'm really looking
forward to to showing up at UCLA practice here in
a month or two and checking them out.

Not to put you on a spot here, Don, but
just kind of I mean, and all we know is
sort of the stats that are throwing at us. Tim
Kates did some digging around. He hung thirty seven and
nine rebounds on us on the US and Phoebus U
seventeen World Cup last week. But the way I understand
is because he's seventeen, like they've got him for multiple years, right, Like,

this is not a guy that can pop straight to
the NBA with some of the changes they made, right,
So this is a guy that's going to be around
for a minute.

Yeah, you have to be nineteen. So I'm assuming if
he is that good, and by all accounts it seems
like he is. If people are throwing it's one thing
for people to throw around first round pick, that's one thing.
There's a lot of guys because there's thirty of them,
But if it's being thrown around that he could be
the number one pick in the draft, that means he's
really good. So hopefully, if he is that good, UCLA

has him for two years and he creates a bunch
of wins for them, and then he'll probably go to
the draft.

How do you think they ended up kind of putting
this thing together? Is the collective getting better? Do they
have more money for anil? Did they figure out the
euroth because it seems like a lot of the Serbians
go to Illinois. Now they've kind of got a pipeline
over there with Underwood, Like, what do you think put
this thing together?
Speaker 5 (17:32):
I think it's all of it now, Matt. I think
everybody looks to the nil. But really, when you talk
about high major programs, if you want a guy, there's
a number for that, and if you can get to
that number, then you're in the running. But it can't
just be the money. And I know it's not that
because we had a couple of guys that went back
to school and all the money was pretty equal. It's
really about the opportunity. And all these Europeans come over
(17:54):
here because they want to play in the NBA or
at least get a chance to play in the NBA.
So what program is going to maximize that the most
so that I can be a high draft pick and
play in the NBA.
Speaker 3 (18:06):
How much Don has because you work in the draft
and with young players, how much has and you work
with European players, work with players from all over the world.
How much has that changed? And how you do your
job European basketball talking to European people, understanding how they
develop basketball as opposed to how we do it here?
Speaker 5 (18:28):
Oh man, that could be a two hour conversation. Pee.
I think what strikes you, being involved, like I am,
is how much more fundamentally sound European players are when
they come over here than American players. Not to say
they're better, just that they're more fundamentally sound. They've been
taught from early age how to pass, how to dribble,
how to shoot, versus relying on athleticism a lot of
(18:52):
the time to be a really good basketball player. And
I think that's the thing that jumps off the page first.
And I think it is a case by case basis,
because there are guys that come here that really want
to play in the NBA, and then there's guys that
come over here that want to play in the NBA.
And that becomes clear too that a lot of the
Europeans don't really want to live here, contrary to what's
(19:14):
been going on with World Cup and all the people
that come over here. I think a lot of guys
that play have grown up playing in the European professional
leagues are comfortable there, and so that's been kind of
interesting to watch over the years too.
Speaker 4 (19:27):
All right, don to investigations, I'm not sure if you
saw it. I had assumed when I heard the trade
was on hold, that it was going to maybe be
a three teamer and can they figure out how to
move brandon Ingram or squeeze in Peyton Watson or something
like that. But now is being shared and each team
has made a statement, the Clippers and the Raptors that
(19:49):
this exchange for Kawhi Leonard is on hold until the
league finishes their aspiration investigation, until some sort of discipline
is handed down to either of Thelippers or Kawhi. The
Raptor's saying they are not going to agree to the
deal until they know kind of what the league's decision
is as it relates to his being available until next year.
(20:11):
What you you've worked with front offices before, like what
do you think ends up happening here? And how big
of a deal is this?
Speaker 5 (20:17):
Well, when I heard it, I was on hold. I
thought it was because Kawhi couldn't get enough load management
days from the Raptors.
Speaker 3 (20:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (20:26):
Uh, you know, this is a hard one because it's
an NBA investigation and they still haven't come down with
they're ruling and what's going to happen. And I get
it from the raptors perspective, you know, and it you know,
the question should be brought up or could be brought up.
Is that part of the reason why the Clippers wanted
to offload Kawhi was part of that, Like they think
(20:48):
he might be missing a bunch of games this year,
and so from the raptors perspective, I mean, he's still
making fifty something million this year. What if he's gone
for twenty five games or forty games or something like Dad,
Now you're paying them fifty million for half a season.
So it'll be interesting to see how it shakes out.
I'm sure they'll get it done because it would be
awfully awkward if the trade blew up and Kawhi had

to come back to.

The Clippers, especially if it sounds like they've already agreed
why I don't know, to hand him that one hundred
and twenty eight million dollar extension, which is the reason
why he wanted to go there.

I don't know if this is uh how you'd answer this,
But can you see the NBA looking at this like, ah,
and this thing gets really ugly if we bring a
hammer down on this.

Yeah, But also I think I think, yeah, I think
the other owners though, are like, hey, man, like, we
can't have this in our league. Everybody starts circumventing the cap.
We got a major problem. So it's one of the Yes,
I agree, that's exactly right, Matt. But I think the
flip side is Adam Silver can't look at his other
owners in the eye and it's be like, hey, guys,
this doesn't look good for the league. Let's just sweep

it under the rug. I don't think that that can
happen because I don't think the other owners in league
are gonna let it happen. Something there we don't even know, like,
but if there is something there, no, I'm.

Sure there's not. Come on, these are these These are
reputable people. Don you work in basketball. These are people
that are buttoned up. The one and only Don McClain
is our guest. He is our best guest and our
best friend, and we know him all too long and
talk about these things. Now, Don, you've always been a
white guy playing basketball, and not just a white guy,

but an American white which we established yesterday or last
week was a little different from the European white guys.
But the European white guys are certainly whiter than the
black guys, and that cannot be disputed. There has been
a little bit of an outcry on our station this
week that this team has too many white guys and

how could a team with so many white white guys
win a championship. We are always very nonchalant having a
good time about race around here. We say white guy,
Filipino guy, black guy, Mexican guy, waterball, and there's all
kinds of guys out there and down. So I mean,
as a white guy playing basketball in a time when
it was even less fashionable, what are your thoughts when

you hear all this white black talk.

Well, I mean, I'm not sure. I haven't followed what
the fallout is. I saw what stephen A said, but
I don't know what happened after that. But I would
just say this, I don't think just because it hasn't
been done doesn't mean it can't happen. Yes, it hasn't
happened where the three main guys on an NBA team
were white and they won a championship. But I don't
(23:36):
think that means it can't happen. And I'm not saying
the Lakers are going to win a championship this year.
But I just think it's that it's that just because
it hasn't happened doesn't mean it can't happen.

for the next four years. Do you like the pieces
they put around Luca? It certainly looks like this was

per his direction of what he wanted, and it kind
of reminds me of the Brunson thing, like, Hey, we've
got a star. Let's put the right pieces around him
and let's see.

If we can do it exactly. And that, to me
is the real answer to your question. Pe is like,
you have one of the best players in the league
on your team. What does he need to win around him?
Austin Reeves good complimentary guy, can score, I can get
twenty five at any time. If they're loading up on Luca,
they needed rim protection, they needed presents in the middle.

Walker Kessler perfect. Those two guys just happen to be white,
but they are doing that. They're putting stuff around a
superstar player that hopefully is going to lead to them
winning more. Do I think they're championship team right now? No,
But I think this is a good foundation to keep
building around Luca that maybe you know, in another you know, year,
or two transactions, whatever happens, that they are a team

that can win a championship.

You know, I I hope so, don I hope so
for all our sake, we're gonna take it. We're going
to march across the vince of Thomas Brook. Don Are
Were you disappointed about the US and the World Company?
Know that you got pretty into it and you could
get in France and Morocco.

Yeah. I think the thing that was disappointing to me was,
you know, I thought the US could beat Belgium, and
it was clear in five minutes they were not beating Belgium.
And I don't know anything about soccer and strategy and
all that, but I've watched enough sports in my life
where you can see a team that is overmatched even

from the beginning, and they were. And I think the
most disappointing thing, and I know he's taken a lot
of incoming, is poolisic. Like, dude, if you're a star man,
you got to play like a star and if you're
gonna win big games, and that was a big game.
Either your star has to dominate in any sport, not
to soccer. Either your star has to dominate or one
or two other guys that you weren't expecting to have

gigantic games due. And it was none of that for
the US, which was disappointing.

and he convinced Donovan to join, so he took part
in what they called the Heatherly War eighteen a Colonel
Sam Allen wasn't so much a war as it was
a load of crap. The Heatherly Brothers sold whiskey to

a hunting party of Pottawatamie Indians. They then stole their horses.
When the Pots tracked them down, they killed three of
the brothers for the thievery, but the mother called in
the troops saying the Pots were on the war path,
when in reality her kids were real a holes and
they were the ones doing the killing and the stealing.
And that's something our man Alex figured out. He had
(31:40):
the Heatherly family arrested, tried, convicted, and war was avoided.
Next up he the Mormon War. Eighteen thirty one, Jackson County, Missouri,
Joseph Smith. About twelve hundred Mormons settled there. The people
don't like them, and they're getting kind of freaked out
by them. Things get a little sketchy. Smith appealed to
(32:04):
Donovan for protection in court, and while he was trying
to work on that, the Mormon War broke out. The
Battle of Crooked River led to Governor Liburn Bogs issuing
his extermination order, directing all Mormons either be exterminated or
driven from the state. The island's unsuccessful it was he
(32:24):
worked diligently to avoid the conflict. He believed the Mormons
were largely acting in self defense, and when General Sam
Lucas took custody at Joseph Smith in a kangaroo court
and declared Smith and others guilty of trees and sentenced
them to hang. Donovan indignantly refused, saying, quote, that is
(32:45):
cold blooded murder. I will not obey your order. If
you execute these men, I will hold you responsible before
an earthly tribunal.

So help me God.
Speaker 4 (32:57):
So they were sent to Liberty Jail to await trial,
at which trial Donovan was appointed as their defense attorney.
Energetically defended them at the risk of his good reputation
and truly probably his life. People didn't like the Mormons
back then.
Speaker 3 (33:12):
Yeah, you know, well, you know it strike some gunns
as they say. You know, the Mormons done some decent things.
Speaker 4 (33:19):
And luckily for alex Jos so.
Speaker 3 (33:21):
You know, ambush some pioneers.

They did do that and Indians. Joe escaped before trial
and when he made his way to Illinois he was
killed there. Now I mentioned the soldier part p Mexican
American War eighteen forty six, served in several campaigns, capture
a Santa Fe invasion of present day northern New Mexico.
He secured the city, was put in charge of the
New Mexico Territory, signed a peace treaty with the Utes,

won the Battle of al Brazito outside Modern Dale, Paso.

Mexico, went down pretty easily.

Yeah, well, thanks to our guy. He was outnumbered four
to one, two to one in artillery. What did he lose?
One dead, eleven wounded. Mexican loss three twenty dead, five
sixty wounded, seventy two prisoners. Donovan marched his men nearly
fifty five hundred miles. It was considered the longest military

campaign since the times of Alexander the Great. He was
received with a hero's welcome when he arrived back home
in Missouri. After the Mexican American War. He returned to law,
wrote the Bill of Rights in New Mexico, and passed
away at seventy nine in Richmond, Missoo.

sort of the stats that are throwing at us. Tim
Kates did some digging around. He hung thirty seven and
nine rebounds on us on the US and Phoebus U
seventeen World Cup last week. But the way I understand
is because he's seventeen, like they've got him for multiple years, right, Like,

this is not a guy that can pop straight to
the NBA with some of the changes they made, right,
So this is a guy that's going to be around
for a minute.

Yeah, you have to be nineteen. So I'm assuming if
he is that good, and by all accounts it seems
like he is. If people are throwing it's one thing
for people to throw around first round pick, that's one thing.
There's a lot of guys because there's thirty of them,
But if it's being thrown around that he could be
the number one pick in the draft, that means he's
really good. So hopefully, if he is that good, UCLA

has him for two years and he creates a bunch
of wins for them, and then he'll probably go to
the draft.

How do you think they ended up kind of putting
this thing together? Is the collective getting better? Do they
have more money for anil? Did they figure out the
euroth because it seems like a lot of the Serbians
go to Illinois. Now they've kind of got a pipeline
over there with Underwood, Like, what do you think put
this thing together?
Speaker 5 (17:32):
I think it's all of it now, Matt. I think
everybody looks to the nil. But really, when you talk
about high major programs, if you want a guy, there's
a number for that, and if you can get to
that number, then you're in the running. But it can't
just be the money. And I know it's not that
because we had a couple of guys that went back
to school and all the money was pretty equal. It's
really about the opportunity. And all these Europeans come over
(17:54):
here because they want to play in the NBA or
at least get a chance to play in the NBA.
So what program is going to maximize that the most
so that I can be a high draft pick and
play in the NBA.
Speaker 3 (18:06):
How much Don has because you work in the draft
and with young players, how much has and you work
with European players, work with players from all over the world.
How much has that changed? And how you do your
job European basketball talking to European people, understanding how they
develop basketball as opposed to how we do it here?
Speaker 5 (18:28):
Oh man, that could be a two hour conversation. Pee.
I think what strikes you, being involved, like I am,
is how much more fundamentally sound European players are when
they come over here than American players. Not to say
they're better, just that they're more fundamentally sound. They've been
taught from early age how to pass, how to dribble,
how to shoot, versus relying on athleticism a lot of
(18:52):
the time to be a really good basketball player. And
I think that's the thing that jumps off the page first.
And I think it is a case by case basis,
because there are guys that come here that really want
to play in the NBA, and then there's guys that
come over here that want to play in the NBA.
And that becomes clear too that a lot of the
Europeans don't really want to live here, contrary to what's
(19:14):
been going on with World Cup and all the people
that come over here. I think a lot of guys
that play have grown up playing in the European professional
leagues are comfortable there, and so that's been kind of
interesting to watch over the years too.
Speaker 4 (19:27):
All right, don to investigations, I'm not sure if you
saw it. I had assumed when I heard the trade
was on hold, that it was going to maybe be
a three teamer and can they figure out how to
move brandon Ingram or squeeze in Peyton Watson or something
like that. But now is being shared and each team
has made a statement, the Clippers and the Raptors that
(19:49):
this exchange for Kawhi Leonard is on hold until the
league finishes their aspiration investigation, until some sort of discipline
is handed down to either of Thelippers or Kawhi. The
Raptor's saying they are not going to agree to the
deal until they know kind of what the league's decision
is as it relates to his being available until next year.

What you you've worked with front offices before, like what
do you think ends up happening here? And how big
of a deal is this?
Speaker 5 (20:17):
Well, when I heard it, I was on hold. I
thought it was because Kawhi couldn't get enough load management
days from the Raptors.

Yeah.
Speaker 5 (20:26):
Uh, you know, this is a hard one because it's
an NBA investigation and they still haven't come down with
they're ruling and what's going to happen. And I get
it from the raptors perspective, you know, and it you know,
the question should be brought up or could be brought up.
Is that part of the reason why the Clippers wanted
to offload Kawhi was part of that, Like they think
(20:48):
he might be missing a bunch of games this year,
and so from the raptors perspective, I mean, he's still
making fifty something million this year. What if he's gone
for twenty five games or forty games or something like Dad,
Now you're paying them fifty million for half a season.
So it'll be interesting to see how it shakes out.
I'm sure they'll get it done because it would be
awfully awkward if the trade blew up and Kawhi had

to come back to.

The Clippers, especially if it sounds like they've already agreed
why I don't know, to hand him that one hundred
and twenty eight million dollar extension, which is the reason

happened where the three main guys on an NBA team
were white and they won a championship. But I don't

think that means it can't happen. And I'm not saying
the Lakers are going to win a championship this year.

Sam Allen wasn't so much a war as it was
a load of crap. The Heatherly Brothers sold whiskey to

a hunting party of Pottawatamie Indians. They then stole their horses.
When the Pots tracked them down, they killed three of
the brothers for the thievery, but the mother called in
the troops saying the Pots were on the war path,
when in reality her kids were real a holes and
they were the ones doing the killing and the stealing.
And that's something our man Alex figured out. He had
(31:40):
the Heatherly family arrested, tried, convicted, and war was avoided.
Next up he the Mormon War. Eighteen thirty one, Jackson County, Missouri,
Joseph Smith. About twelve hundred Mormons settled there. The people
don't like them, and they're getting kind of freaked out
by them. Things get a little sketchy. Smith appealed to
(32:04):
Donovan for protection in court, and while he was trying
to work on that, the Mormon War broke out. The
Battle of Crooked River led to Governor Liburn Bogs issuing
his extermination order, directing all Mormons either be exterminated or
driven from the state. The island's unsuccessful it was he
(32:24):
worked diligently to avoid the conflict. He believed the Mormons
were largely acting in self defense, and when General Sam
Lucas took custody at Joseph Smith in a kangaroo court
and declared Smith and others guilty of trees and sentenced
them to hang. Donovan indignantly refused, saying, quote, that is
(32:45):
cold blooded murder. I will not obey your order. If
you execute these men, I will hold you responsible before
an earthly tribunal.

So help me God.

So they were sent to Liberty Jail to await trial,
at which trial Donovan was appointed as their defense attorney.
Energetically defended them at the risk of his good reputation
and truly probably his life. People didn't like the Mormons
back then.

Yeah, you know, well, you know it strike some gunns
as they say. You know, the Mormons done some decent things.
Speaker 4 (33:19):
And luckily for alex Jos so.

You know, ambush some pioneers.

They did do that and Indians. Joe escaped before trial
and when he made his way to Illinois he was
killed there. Now I mentioned the soldier part p Mexican
American War eighteen forty six, served in several campaigns, capture
a Santa Fe invasion of present day northern New Mexico.
He secured the city, was put in charge of the
New Mexico Territory, signed a peace treaty with the Utes,

won the Battle of al Brazito outside Modern Dale, Paso.

Mexico, went down pretty easily.

Yeah, well, thanks to our guy. He was outnumbered four
to one, two to one in artillery. What did he lose?
One dead, eleven wounded. Mexican loss three twenty dead, five
sixty wounded, seventy two prisoners. Donovan marched his men nearly
fifty five hundred miles. It was considered the longest military

campaign since the times of Alexander the Great. He was
received with a hero's welcome when he arrived back home
in Missouri. After the Mexican American War. He returned to law,
wrote the Bill of Rights in New Mexico, and passed
away at seventy nine in Richmond, Missoo.
