l A Sports Live Everywhere on the iHeartRadio APD. Back
to our standard scheduled during Dodger seasons. The Dodgers are
back in action at the Galpin Motors broadcast booth. It's
the Milwaukee Brewers, winners of seven in a row, three
of those a sweep of the Dodgers out in Milwaukee
(01:15):
prior to the All Star break Tonight is Ron say,
Bobblehead night as the Penguin will get inducted into the
Legends of Dodgers Baseball, ninth former player to enter the
exclusive group. And I'm sure if you ask him, it
is well past its expiration date as to him having
been inducted into the Legends of Dodgers Baseball group. But
(01:38):
tonight is the night for Ron's say, and I'm sure
it'll be all smiles.
Speaker 4 (01:42):
We should play our interview with him.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
It's not a bad idea, the one where we at
whether or not Steve Garvey should be in the Hall
of Fame, and he says, Carvey, how about me being
in the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 4 (01:53):
That's one of my favorite interviews that we've ever done.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
It really was pretty.
Speaker 4 (01:57):
I mean I could taste it. I could taste the bitter.
It was like eating let's take my tongue and a
jar of horse radish. And I loved it well and well,
I also a very bitter person.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
It also was bellied with statistics to support his Well.
Speaker 4 (02:13):
He wasn't just gonna sit there and say he's the
bass and you know what, he makes a very compelling argument.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
He does.
Speaker 4 (02:19):
There's no doubt about it. Ron Say is one of
the all time great Dodgers and that's why he's getting
honored tonight. Now, how does that job with his general demeanor?
Speaker 2 (02:31):
Well, I do. He was a regular ambassador. He was
in the regular rotation of the Dodgers ambassador and I
think the frustration with these sort of things maybe led
to well I could, I.
Speaker 4 (02:46):
Would never be able to speculate. I don't know. But
he is chappy, and he was a great high school
football player. And Ron Say is being honored tonight, and
he deserves to be honored tonight. Why is he no
longer in the rotation of ambassadors like Steve Garvey hand
feeding you barbecue morsels? I'm not sure.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
Literally, but we can. We can put this in your mouth.
I'm Steve Garvey. I've got a rubber glove on and
I'm gonna feed it to you.
Speaker 4 (03:14):
Today is a day for celebration of Ron Say. Uh.
It is also and you guys better be ready, you
guys better strap your balls up. I mean, there's a
lot going on. David Vasse today is doing pre and
post on TV, color on radio with Nelly and then
(03:38):
Dodger Talk tonight. Is that all correct? Or is Kate's
doing Dodger Talk tonight. Tim's doing Dodger Talk tonight. So
maas say.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
He will join a color analyst along with Nelly on
the play by play.
Speaker 4 (03:53):
Correct, which he's done before with Charlotte right right.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
And then so Rick is doing TV analysis, is that
what's happening or or no, Jose Mode I think is
doing TV is on vacation. Rick is on vacation.
Speaker 4 (04:05):
So Dave is doing color analysis on radio, He's doing
TV pre and post. So I'll have a report at
the beginning of the game on the TV broadcast on
Sports and at LA with Joe Davis, and he will
be doing an interview on the field if the Dodgers win,
(04:26):
but also doing the entire game on radio. So we
will talk to David Vass. Tyler Glass now he's going
to pitch tonight and we will discuss that with David
Vasse in the next next segment. We're going to talk
to David Vase at some time this segment. Allegedly we're
going to talk to Towey Toy Polotu, the Chargers pass
(04:49):
rusher from USC who has been so good and he
is at camp at the Bolt with Matt Mney Smith
Charger commons adjacent and they are doing their thing. So
while we wait for two two week Polo two, it
is a frog man Friday walk on the ocean. Let
(05:15):
just tap on the stall.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
Let us fum.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
Water would boom on a frog band Friday. The Patches
Somebody show celebrates the sea, the sea and everything that
comes with it, which means a cooler climate. Yes, while
everybody else suffers at one hundred degree temperature inland, it
is a seventy or eighty by.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
This glorious man. It is glorious.
Speaker 4 (05:44):
You know. That's why you pay the pride of traffic
and mortgages.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
That's why, that's why my property text is but today
seventy degrees today, Why do we have.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
To pay property tax? Why do we have to pay
rent on a house we are at own. That being said,
it is time to celebrate Mike Nelson, the greatest character
that ever lived in the greatest television show that ever
was made, Sea Hunt.
Speaker 5 (06:09):
And the Cove of San Diego. We were giving the
midget sub but real worker Bill was developing it to
sell of the Navy. He done a good job with
its silent electric motor. It could carry two men, equipped
with diving lungs about fifteen miles at a fair speed.
It still had some flaws. The doors designed for quick
escape and emergencies were sometimes opened by changes and pressure,
(06:31):
and the controls weren't perfect.
Speaker 6 (06:33):
Yet.
Speaker 5 (06:33):
I enjoyed helping Bill, especially as I could see the
value of the small craft for surprise attacks and secret missions.
Not that I intended to go on any I figured
those days were in the past for me. I thought
that we were testing the subsecretly, but I was mistaken.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
Todd lights, thirteen flaws, What are you nuts? We still
got to take that.
Speaker 4 (06:55):
Board, man, You know what that's like. These days.
Speaker 7 (06:59):
You got the knee TV everywhere. You got frogmen, you
got the e C two s with the satellite tracking.
You got the spell to nine of salt choppers up
the ass. We're losing one out of every nine loads.
That's no duck walk anymore. Let me tell you, forget
about money. What do you suggest that's reasonable?
Speaker 4 (07:19):
Deer all.
Speaker 6 (07:32):
Sailer, but mark.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
Perfect finish Pee to point out that we've got tickets today.
Every single hour we are gonna give me. We're gonna
be giving away tickets for the Tuesday Dodger Twins game
at Dodger Stadium, So one pair per hour, Tiascar, Hernandez
home run Derby Bobblehead night. It's going to the first
forty thousand fans, so line up early because there aren't
(08:33):
fifty four thousand of them, just forty. Keep listening. It
is your chance to win every single hour. We'll do
it again on Monday as well. So this hour, four
o'clock hour, five o'clock hour, we're off at six. Don't
know if Dodgers on Deck's gonna have a pair. I
would assume they do tickets every hour in your home
with the World Series champion Dodgers a five seventy LA sports,
So look.
Speaker 4 (08:53):
Forward to that. Look forward to the Dodgers being back
rough seven game losing streak, but then a series victory
over the Giants right before it all ended for the
All Star break, and now we will get started again
and you're gonna get a heavy dose of David Vasse
on TV and radio. Everybody is looking forward to that.
(09:14):
I know that I am. I do want to say
uh calin yee'z in the house and Tim Cats will
be in later. But I did get a lot of
complaints about the butchery the nib of the podcast, of
the podcast even I had. Normally you are the person
that navigates and deals with those customer complaints.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
I was because.
Speaker 4 (09:40):
Bootsman, you know, and I'm saying trying to interview uh,
you know Jay soavel from Wyoming, and next thing you know, Uh,
I've got my phone explodes, complaining about fully functional employee
Adham that he's somehow lazy or entitled the way that
he puts up the pod to pass and I could
(10:01):
see him going, you know, while people come play. Yeah,
so there will be an effort. Maybe in turn band
will fix it while he's there today, or maybe Tim
Kates over the weekend will fix it and it'll be
more palatable or in the way that you are used
to it. All right, Matt, do we have our guest.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
Yeah, Touley just sat down all right.
Speaker 4 (10:23):
Joining us right now on your Southern California Toyota Dealer
celebrity hotline straight out of Lawndale.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
Liked he's giving us the fight on fingers.
Speaker 4 (10:35):
Well, come on, it's a great pass rusher out of Londale.
We haven't had a pass rusher out of Lawndale like
Twoey twoy below too since the San Diego State La
Ram legend, Fred dry But truly he didn't know that.
Come on, Fred Dryer, hunter, now I know. Now you
know and knowing us half the battle, sir, coming off
(10:58):
the edge doing it right back in camp with the
Los Angeles Chargers, the team Acrosstown from Freddie Dryer is too,
he pulow to a friend of the show on your
Southern California Toyota Dealer Celebrity hotline. If we didn't say
that already, how are you, brother? And welcome back to
camp and football season.
Speaker 8 (11:15):
I'm doing good. I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
So Tully, you're sitting in front of me. You wear
the hooded sweatshirt kind of hot? Has that been your
whole career? If you done the hooded sweatter thing? Was
it a Charger thing? How did you come up?
Speaker 4 (11:26):
Something cut off like Belichack Matt got on and you're
described it. Come on, I'll describe it. It's waffle knit.
It looks like it doesn't look too heavy gauge. I
don't think. I don't know if it's Is it heavy?
Speaker 2 (11:39):
Is it not? It's a legitimate hoodie though, And oh
he's even got a dry fit underneath it. I mean
Tullia's layered and he's got his game jersey on as well.
Speaker 4 (11:47):
Well, you know you're right by the ocean. We talked
about that marine layer that you know, it's not one
hundred degrees. It's not like he's in in San Bernardino
or anything back in the day. So what is it
like for you? You're getting to be a real veteran in
the NFL, You're starting to feel You're starting to feel it,
and uh, what's it like going back to camp after
(12:09):
you're a little bit more comfortable with the team and
the head coach and all the changes that have been made.
Speaker 8 (12:14):
It's been doing good. I think it's it's helped me.
It's helped me be more open and more outgoing. And
I think I think a lot of people know how
how conservative I am. I don't really talk much, but
being in the part of a team that's, like like
you said, like we we've heard it last year, and
it's helping me be more comfortable with everybody and be
able to speak up a little bit and just vibeate everybody.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
I think, yeah, give us a because we heard a
lot from Coach Harbaugh from Coach mintor coach Herbert about
about Khalil Mack and just kind of having his presence.
He seems sounds like he was a guy that was
here every single day in the offseason, kind of walk
us through what it does for a team when you
have someone in the colt, likely of a Hall of
Famer that has, you know, sort of that sort of
(12:57):
I don't know, presence amongst all of you, sir.
Speaker 8 (12:59):
I mean, he's the standard. Like I've said many times,
he's he's the standard. The way he comes in, like
like like you say, as a veteran going into year
twelve thirteen, and he don't have to come to ots,
you know, but he's there every day. He's doing everything
what everybody else is doing. And that is what everybody
motivates everybody to do what we're doing, you know. And
(13:20):
and he's pushing us, you know, he's not just here
and just being here. He's being out. He's coming and
being vocal and leading us. And and man, it's been fun.
It's inciding, and I'm happy for Khalil.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
And yeah, I was going through your snap counts last
year and I you know, I knew that you were
a core for special teams guy, But I didn't realize
you played nearly four hundred special team snaps. Give us
an idea of what as you know you're going into
this role now Joey bos is not here anymore. Just
kind of what it was like last year playing I
think it was about seven hundred and fifty snaps on
(13:52):
defense and almost four hundred on special Team's kind of
how how that takes it? How do you know what
special team snaps are like and kind of what it
meant to you to be part of that while also
being expected to kind of have a a full time
role on defense.
Speaker 8 (14:05):
Yeah, I mean, coming in, I know how important being
a part of the special teams was. You know, like
like when people come into when people come into the
to the league, you know, everybody's thinking about defense, offense,
but like they don't know the importance of sports special
teams and how much it helps you, you know, make
the team or or or elevate your snaps in the game.
(14:25):
And I've I've taken a little pride pride into special teams.
You know, it's not a it's not a it's not
a a playoff.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
You know.
Speaker 8 (14:33):
That's that's like coach Fakin talks about it all the time,
like it sets up the offense, it sets up the defense,
and especially it's important and I'm an honored to be
a part of that.
Speaker 2 (14:42):
You know, I would assume it's something that that Kyle
Connard is gonna gonna be doing. Give us an idea
about the fourth round pick SEC Defensive Player of the
Year and kind of how your relationships has started with
the rookie and and what you expect from him.
Speaker 8 (14:56):
Yeah, he's he's been doing great lately. Him. He came
in artas and learned paper very well. He got it
down really fast, and he's been a sponge. You know,
he's been asking questions, asking Khalil uh bud and and
he's been learning a lot. And we're expecting a lot
of him from this year, and we're excited for him.
Speaker 4 (15:14):
He's got you in a real card uh training us
right now on the Petros and Body Show. We're always
happy to talk to him. Now, you're a guy, you
know who's from la and and you got to play
college football in l a And and you're playing pro
football in l a And.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (15:32):
You know, most people would see that as a blessing.
I'm sure you do. U with a large family and
a lot of support around you. But at the same time, uh,
has it ever Has it ever occurred to you that
you wish you were like somewhere else where everybody couldn't
get at you, you know, like when you're sitting on
the beach in Hermosa.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
No.
Speaker 8 (15:50):
I mean, it's been a blessing, like you said, being
being here in La basically my whole life is just
it's made things easier.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
You know.
Speaker 8 (15:58):
It's like you know how some people will be from
the East Coast come all the way from Chargers and
it's a big like transition. Everything's different out here compared
to other states, and I think it's a blessing.
Speaker 6 (16:08):
You know.
Speaker 8 (16:09):
It's been easy for me to get used to this
or like I came to Chargers and all I had
to focus on was the team, you know, I didn't
have to focus on where I'm going to live or
or homegoing and bring with me and stuff like that.
Like everybody's here, my family's here, my fiance is here, like.
Speaker 4 (16:24):
Oh, congratulation about that.
Speaker 2 (16:26):
Congratulations, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Speaker 8 (16:28):
And like I said, yeah, it's been easy. It's easy
transition and I'm loving it overall.
Speaker 4 (16:34):
Do you ever drive down the one oh five and
then up the one ten and park wherever you want,
like run over a hedge and and just start throwing
weight all around in the new bougie USC building or
wherever it is, and try to show every you know
where all your chargers gear and bolow everybody down.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (16:53):
I actually was over there in an off season a
little bit nice man that that business coming along, And
I'm excited to see how lives it when it's done.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
When you when you're from here, I would have you know,
like whenever we talk to people like so what you
know where you're gonna live and a lot of times
Beverly Hills. So I'm gonna live in you know whatever,
South Manhattan Beach. But it's someone who's from here. How
does that work when you're gonna kind of set up
and and do you want to live close to your family?
Do you live by the other players, because it seems
like a lot of guys lives in Hawthorn.
Speaker 8 (17:24):
I don't stay anymore. I'm maneuver my way around the city.
You know, I know I know where where I can't stay,
where I can't stay, where I shis sty where I
sinned stay in.
Speaker 3 (17:35):
Yeah, I got a nice spot.
Speaker 8 (17:36):
It's not it's not far off from the Facinity, probably
like twelve minutes.
Speaker 2 (17:39):
And I know where you are.
Speaker 8 (17:40):
Yeah, it's it's close.
Speaker 4 (17:41):
Where do you think, Oh, I'll tell you right, he's
in Westchester. No, I'm just kidding, know Rand. The other way,
I figured, Uh, you know, you've you've been a great
guy on the show and you've been fun to talk
to for a long time. And uh, you've done this
for a little bit of a while. Uh, what's changed
(18:02):
so much for you since you were a young guy? Like,
what's the one thing, uh, football wise that has really
kind of changed for you in this uh in the
new environment with the Chargers and just going about your work.
Speaker 8 (18:17):
Mmmm. I'd say i'd say pressure.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
But I feel like.
Speaker 8 (18:22):
Preface pressure is like a privilege, you know. I want
that pressure. I want to feel like like they like
the team needs me and stuff like that, because it's
just it just elevates my game and it makes me
play harder, work harder. And yeah, I don't I I
want that how much.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
I don't know if it's I don't know if you
get used to it or if you had to get
used to it, But you know, coach Harbaugh is a
different kind of guy, a different kind of coach. Seems
like the team loves playing for him. How different is
it in year two versus year one? How long was
maybe that kind of feeling out process and not to
mention new coordinators, new you know line coach, you know,
coach Elston and coach Minter and coach har But how
different is year two from year one? If at all? Yeah?
Speaker 8 (19:02):
I think I think the biggest difference is we have
the culture that we had from last year and it's
and it's like it's just only growing, you know, Like
last year, I guess you can say it's rebuild, but
we just had to build a culture. And this year
we have the culture and we just building on.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
Top of that.
Speaker 8 (19:19):
So I think it's just a step forward of what
we did last year. And it's been exciting, it's fun.
It's actually shocked a lot of the players, you know,
what we're doing compared to what we did last year.
And man, it just shows that coach Harball trust trust
us this year and and he's he's been doing good.
Everybody loves it and like you said, everybody loves playing from.
Speaker 4 (19:40):
Uh, you know, you played at Londale High. Uh, when
I was young in the South Bay, all the Tongan
guys were at Hawthorne and all the Samoan guys were
at Losing Or and we didn't even know about Londale
or they they were there. But uh, you know, that
was like the war between the Polynesian eyes. And then
(20:01):
it was also Banning versus Carson down in the city.
As you know about that as well. Uh, what is there?
It feels like, you know, uh, guys, guys play together.
Now there's not as much Uh, there's not as much separation.
Can you explain that to me in South Bay terms?
Speaker 8 (20:21):
Yeah, I mean, I mean, I'm pretty sure you hit
it on the on the on the point right there.
I mean a lot of the tongue Is were at
Hawthorne mostly Someone's in Losing Her. But my brothers, my
brothers back then actually went to Losing It as well.
My old Olympia Yeah, yeah, he played there, played football
over there, And yeah, I think now it's just like
(20:43):
we're we're not being separated. We're like we're we're just Polynesian.
We're all like playing together, We're all going to school together.
Like losing your if you go in there now it's
it's it's both someone's and tongue is over there, londo.
Speaker 4 (20:53):
And everybody's got tattoos. It used to guys they wouldn't
have the tattoos. What happened?
Speaker 8 (20:59):
I don't know, man, I just got tatted too, So
I got my sleeve you sleep?
Speaker 2 (21:04):
Yeah, did you do it? But I can't see it.
He's got the hooded sweatshirt.
Speaker 4 (21:08):
On b Did you do the bamboo with the hammer,
the whole deal, or did you do the mahina?
Speaker 6 (21:13):
No?
Speaker 8 (21:14):
I didn't. I didn't. I just did a regular test.
Speaker 4 (21:16):
Okay, good. Yeah, you don't want to go on the
boat to Pago Pago and you don't have it all.
Speaker 2 (21:22):
We'll let you get We'll let you get out of here,
uh to leave? Well maybe not. I'll give you my
last one though, and that is you mentioned going over
to us. So you just kind of your thoughts on
what's happening with your alma mater. You know, obviously a
lot of news in the off season about who they're
gonna play and who they might not play in the future,
sort of how they fit into this new conference, the
(21:42):
Big Ten, and how they fit into that hierarchy and
how close it tabs you keep on it. Yeah, I
think it is.
Speaker 8 (21:48):
It's a lot of stuff going on over there.
Speaker 2 (21:50):
You know.
Speaker 8 (21:51):
Hopefully he's not stressing the players too much, you know.
But I'm I'm I'm proud that they're, you know, getting
that players that they need to to. Can you continue
our success at the USC? And I do keep up
a little bit. I actually trained one of the commits
during all season to a Semote Catonga.
Speaker 2 (22:11):
He I think he.
Speaker 8 (22:12):
Goes in next year, but yeah, I trained with him.
I talked to coach knew a lot, you know. He
he he helped me a lot my last year there,
so I still talked to him. I actually met with
him a lot during over the season as well. And yeah,
I stay close.
Speaker 4 (22:26):
Coach Ken was just talking. I just talked to Coach
Ken near Motololo up at San Jose State and he
was talking about that coach and uh and what a
good coach he is at USC. Gave me some faith
in the D line going forward. Touley, God bless you
man and stay healthy and hey, have a great season.
Thanks for stopping by.
Speaker 8 (22:43):
Thank you all right, I'm doing.
Speaker 4 (22:45):
That's on that sweet as sleep.
Speaker 2 (22:49):
Chargers edge rusher looking forward to this season as you're
free to go. You're good man, appreciate you to Ley,
thank you, and.
Speaker 4 (22:56):
I want him to hear my sweet James commercially exactly right.
Speaker 2 (23:02):
I'm the split squad today sitting at the Bolt as
a training camp concluded about train campart just concluded about
an hour ago. We'll go till six pm. Between now
and the top of the hour, give away our first
pair of Dodger tickets.
Speaker 4 (23:14):
I don't know if it's a split squad. I mean
we're not in the same place, playing the same game.
Speaker 2 (23:20):
The last time we had the split squad, it wasn't
spied to haul my ass to your house. You get
on the air as a matter of fact.
Speaker 4 (23:29):

It's David Vass wearing many hats, super hoffed and you're hallucinating.
David Vasse Spectrum Sportsnet, MLB networking right here on M
five seventy LA Sports. He is our Dodger reporter, brought
(24:50):
to you by Service Titan dot Com. Dave, how are you?
Speaker 9 (24:53):
I'm doing great back at Dodger Stadium. First guy us
on the field with Cochito Cruz, number forty seven. He
brought his two good looking kids on the field. They're
out here, they're having a good time. And his kids
wearing seventeen instead of his dad's forty seven.
Speaker 4 (25:07):
Right now, Wow, as well, you know everybody loves showy
Toddy and he's back tonight. Before we get into any
of that, Dave, what exactly are you doing tonight? I
think I got it right, but can you tell us
all the different things you're doing tonight.
Speaker 9 (25:21):
Yes, I will be the sideline reporter for sports and
at LA tonight pre and post. During the game, I'll
be up in the booth and writing Shotgun with Steven Nelson.
Rick Monday is gonna return for the Twins series on Monday,
so they needed a pinch hitter in the booth tonight.
I'm gonna be there and James Loney will be alongside
(25:41):
Stephen Nelson on Saturday and Sunday. Very exciting if he'll
be wearing his World Series ring that he's been flowing
all over Avenue and.
Speaker 2 (25:52):
Chad he earned it. He earned it.
Speaker 9 (25:56):
Dave what his twenty home runs? We might have won
one in twenty twelve.
Speaker 2 (26:02):
Dave, what went behind the way they or should we
read anything to how they are lining up pictures at
the start of the you know, post All Star break.
Speaker 4 (26:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (26:12):
One thing it tells me with Yamamoto not starting in
this series against the Brewers is they want to get
him extra rests. There was you know, kind of trending
downwards in the month of June as far as his stuff,
his velocity, his results, So it gives him an extra
breather that was built into the schedule, and you know,
obviously still building Otani back up, being careful with him
(26:36):
and basically telling us that glass Now and Emma Shean
are healthy and going to be part of what is
going to be a six man rotation after Blake Snow
returns and I expect him to be back here by
the end of the month. It's going to pitch for
Oklahoma City on Sunday and after that maybe one more
and then rejoined the Dodgers. It feels like.
Speaker 2 (26:57):
We were you know, it's good to see she and
back up Otani. I mean, it was quite the formidable
duo that they had going there. How do you think
they'll they'll work that now with Otani and how you know,
is there continuing to kind of stretch him out.
Speaker 9 (27:11):
Yeah, well, Shean's going to stand on his own two
feet get his own start, which he deserves. And who's
we'll see who the Dodgers decide to call up to
piggyback Otani, who now has gone three innings. So let's
not forget the fact that it's not going to be
this way the entire year, where you're going to have
to have a Kasparius or a Robeleski or even a
(27:32):
amate she and a pickyback, and he's going to get
to the point where he has passed the rehab process
and going to throw five six innings in a start,
so you won't need that type of piggyback, guy.
Speaker 4 (27:43):
Dave, what's one thing you're really looking for as far
as the Dodgers in the second half that uh has
has the most impact, you think, or something that will
tell the tale that is not as obvious to idiots
like myself.
Speaker 9 (27:58):
Biggest thing is Mookie Bets getting back to being Mookie Bets.
We didn't see it the first half of the season.
He wasn't an All Star. His OPS is below seven hundred.
We had never seen it this low before the All
Star break. So it's really about getting Otawani, Bets and Freeman,
or at least two out of the three at different
points in time the rest of the year to be
(28:20):
hitting at the same time. We really haven't seen that
all year long, So to get at least two of
those first three guys going, which certainly helped the Dodgers
reach their potential, and we saw it so many times
last year for long stretches. We haven't seen that so
far this year. So to get those three guys going
at the same time is pivotal for the Dodgers to
(28:42):
win a back to back championship.
Speaker 2 (28:44):
Since we haven't talked to you since the All Star Game, Dave,
I don't know if you've had a chance to talk
to any players if you texted with them, But what
did you make of the swing off? It seemed like
some people coming out of that because that's what they
do in the Independent League in all tie games. I
guess that were like, hey, this is better than putting
a random dude on second base kind of Do you
(29:04):
think that could get any traction?
Speaker 9 (29:08):
Yeah, it could, it could. I know Justin Turner was
suggesting that back in twenty twenty. But you know, obviously
the All Star Game is very different than a real
meaningful game, and I guess you could debate whether or
not it's more genuine and authentic of having a swing
off than it is having Key k Hernandez or Miguel
(29:28):
Rojas pretending to be pictures. That's a debate for the public, right,
I mean, what do you want to see more? Do
you want to see T K. Pitcher? Do you want
to see a swing off? Because if there's a swing off,
the Dodgers probably are going to be undefeated with guys
like Otani and taosca Hernandez and Dalton Rushing on the bench.
(29:48):
I mean, if you want to talk about the evil
Empire and the scale scene tipped unfairly, let's do a
swing off with the Dodgers. They'll take extra innings every
day of the week, so that's a something to contemplate
as well.
Speaker 2 (30:03):
The one other All Star thing, Dave, we were talking
about this after the game, that it's it was hard
to imagine, you know, Clayton Kershaw doing that. You know,
I don't know, maybe four years ago, five, maybe even
three years ago. Yet the I don't know the joy
with which he seemed to be miked up to soak
in that moment, just as someone who's been around him
(30:24):
his entire career. How much different is he how much
is he enjoying this? Because it does sort of feel like,
at least maybe that was the first time I really
felt at watching the All Star Game, that that he
knows this is the last run. And I don't know
if that's fair or not, or if you know anything
about that, but that's certainly what they made it feel like.
Speaker 9 (30:40):
One hundred percent they made it feel that way. Clayton
has not come out and said that definitively, but there's
a very good chance this is his last season pitching
in Major League Baseball. And the biggest difference, I mean,
think about this, the guy that doesn't even want you
to make eye contact with him before start is Mike
up and talking to Joe Davis and John Smoltz in
(31:03):
the middle of a wind up, asking them what pitch
they want him to throw. I mean, that is not
the same Kershaw from even two years ago. And I
think that's the biggest difference. He understands this could be it,
this could be his last dance, and he's enjoying the
moments more than I've ever seen him enjoy them.
Speaker 4 (31:21):
Maybe shouldn't have been a chap ass all those years,
David Masse, Yeah, maybe not. What about speaking of another
chappy guy, our friend Max Muncie. Do you have heard
anything on his bruised knee, his bruisy knees and will
he return anytime soon?
Speaker 9 (31:38):
I saw him playing catch earlier today. He had the
sleeve on his left leg. He has started to swing
the bat as well, so things are moving in the
right direction for Max. Munsey definitely moving in the right direction.
And I go back to that Sunday before they left
for the last road trip at Dodger Stadium, the last
time we saw Muncy, and he was walking noticeably better
(32:00):
than he was even twenty four hours before, and that
kind of made him optimistic that maybe this will take
six weeks and the activity we're seeing. Obviously it's a
pain tolerance issue at this point. So Dave Roberts even
indicated he had an injury similar to this when he
was playing and it's going to linger into next year.
So it's all about pain tolerance. But the biggest thing
(32:22):
for me is when I start to see him take
some ground balls at third base, because how much is
his mobility, his footwork going to be affected by the
pain in his left knee. I mean, already maybe he
had lost half a step playing defense. Is that going
to make a big difference. I think that's a big
question and a question that Dodgers need answered before the
(32:42):
All Star break in some ways to consider their options
at the trade deadline.
Speaker 2 (32:48):
Yeah, in terms of the trade deadline, Dave, you've got
you know, injuries to Moncie, You've got Michael CONFORDO who
was supposed to just kind of lock down left field
and it hasn't quite happened obviously, Tanner Scott in the bullpen.
Like if you had to guess, you know, what direction
or what priority they would put their potential acquisitions. How
do you think that list would look?
Speaker 9 (33:09):
I mean, Andrew Friedman spelled it out for you guys
the day that Evan Phillips was lost for the years,
looking for a high leverage right handed reliever. So you know,
for all these people that are acting like they're breaking news,
he told you point blank on the record, right here
on the field what he's looking for and that that
priority hasn't changed. Hey, Petros, your favorite player just walked
(33:30):
into the dugout our stands here? Yeah, yeapans here? How
you doing out man? He said, he's doing well. He's
a brand new father. He has that aad vibe going
for him now. So you know, Tarzan swinging from the
trees with the baby in.
Speaker 4 (33:45):
His arm he impregnated Jane. Good for him.
Speaker 9 (33:49):
I'm not repeating that.
Speaker 4 (33:50):
Oh, anyway, have a great night, Dave, watch Dave on TV,
listen to Dave on the radio. Absolutely fabulous and his dad.
Speaker 2 (34:01):
Hi, how's it going.
Speaker 4 (34:02):
We're doing good out man good.
Speaker 2 (34:05):
I congratulations on the baby out then.
Speaker 9 (34:08):
Good Patorno to Oklahoma City, to La wherever you go.
They're swinging on the same vine.
Speaker 2 (34:13):
I appreciate that.
Speaker 4 (34:14):
Did you name the baby? Uh any like Sutter's mill
or anything like that. What did you name the baby?
Speaker 2 (34:22):
Baby's name is Avery?
Speaker 4 (34:24):
Yeah, good name, Yeah, beautiful.
Speaker 9 (34:28):
Better than Petros.
Speaker 4 (34:30):
Most things are all right. Thank you, guys. Have a
great night. David Vassay all over the place tonight, and
everybody will enjoy him, no doubt. If you don't, or
if you do, let him know at the real underscore
dv on X. Well, Matt, there's a lot going on, a.
Speaker 2 (34:48):
Lot of pep and David Vassy step well, you know,
I mean you know there is some pep in that
step Now.
Speaker 4 (34:54):
He's a real Swiss Army knife today.
Speaker 2 (34:56):
He really is. He likes be and the queen on
the chessboard.
Speaker 4 (34:59):
And you know, I mean he's earned that right. Absolutely,
we shall return with more great sports talk. I have
I have some local knowledge. Next. Do you want some
local knowledge matter? Do you want one or do you
want something.
Speaker 2 (35:17):
In here? A minute ago?
Speaker 4 (35:18):
Yeah, that was pretty local. He told us about the Apollo.
I'm telling you that was a good one. Was Polynesian.
The Polynesian set up in town used to be a
lot different. The Toggans and Samoans were at each other's throats,
and at some point, because of the because of the
sport of football, I think, uh, they just all ended
up together. They couldn't fight each other on the teams anymore.
(35:41):
So we have harmony, at least in one community. We'll
be back with more great sports talk next.
Speaker 3 (36:02):
Hello, PMS listener.
Speaker 1 (36:05):
Did you know Am five seventy LA Sports has a
wide range of LA sports podcasts.
Speaker 10 (36:11):
There's Rogan and Rodney, that one is my favorite, Dodger
Talk with David Vasse, the Dodger Podcast of record, Clipper
Talk Without a Musk, follow us all and many more.
Just go to AM five to seventy LA Sports on
the iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (36:22):
App Tail Bobblehead and we have two more pair of
tickets to give away between now and the end of
the show. So three o'clock hour, ticket's gone, got two
pairs left, and be sure to check out Dodgers Brewers Baseball.
(36:46):
It's seven to ten tonight because it's Ron Say Bobblehead Night.
Penguin getting inducted into the Legends of Dodgers Baseball, ninth
former player to enter the exclusive group. Going to be
an exciting return against a red hot Brewers team that's
one seven in a row as we get back at
it tonight out at Dodger Stadium.
Speaker 4 (37:02):
And it stands to reason, you know, with the Brewers
and says history with the brew Crew and the Dodgers
playing the night that Ron Say would accept this honor.
Do you think he's gonna be chappy in his speech? Oh?
Speaker 2 (37:20):
You think he'll like I mean, it's an olive branch
right from the.
Speaker 4 (37:23):
He might thank his teammates, or he might say that
he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame more
than any.
Speaker 2 (37:27):
He might say, well, I'm happy to be here. It's
about time. I mean, I mean Ron Say, is Ron Say?
Speaker 4 (37:35):
Yeah, he's You think a Madrashan, his old high school teammate,
will be there, formerly known as Bobby Moore.
Speaker 2 (37:43):
You should invite your father out so he can heckle
Bobby Moore again.
Speaker 4 (37:47):
I don't know which one is more decrepit. All right,
it's time, Matt. This is a big story speaking of
my father coming out. It is Greek news.
Speaker 2 (37:56):
Greek news. Yeah, news that is Greek.
Speaker 3 (38:02):
Invented de mont Greci and we're the first people.
Speaker 10 (38:05):
Who do you know, we sink now here's Petrus Papa donkeys.
Speaker 4 (38:11):
Now. Of course this could also be considered local knowledge,
but big story. Matt and our family church Saint Catherine
Greek Orthodox Church in Redondo Beach, where my brother Dmitri
is the psaltist, which is the guy that sings along
with the priest during church. Well, actually Dmitri has a
(38:33):
whole crew now and he has chanting practice with his
many salties and they all come up there and sing
with him.
Speaker 2 (38:41):
It's a good pronunciation of yeah.
Speaker 4 (38:43):
And my brother, my my nephew, my brother's son Johnny
was with him in the uh in the lectern or
whatever they call it. I'm sure there's some Greek word
for it. But my my my nephew was there the
other day to play my Greek music. Anyway, My son
also works in the altar at the church under a
father Mike Cory and Deacon Carry and Matt, you'll be
(39:04):
happy to know this weekend is the very popular Greek
festival at the church.
Speaker 2 (39:10):
Love Greek fest.
Speaker 4 (39:11):
Every Greek church has one all across the country, and
ours at Saint Catherine is not dissimilar except in a
couple of ways. In three days you will be able
to be you know, for the three days you'll be
able to be there. It all goes to the church,
the ecclesia, the food, the wine, beer, hard liquor, all fabulous.
(39:36):
We have Greek brandy and uzo, maybe some other things
for sale. All great, But unlike some other churches and
their Greek fest Matt and I'm not naming names, and
I'm not our women are you neck As make all
of the pastries and traditional desserts and stuff by hand
and from scratch. We don't order out. That's a big
(39:58):
one and that takes a law. It takes weeks for
the Unique has to get it together. So that's one
thing that sets us apart. There's been newspaper articles written
about it. Also, the great Greek band Buzouki and all
the Olympians are in the house playing. Now. I'm not
gonna say that's unique.
Speaker 2 (40:18):
I wish they had a more Greek name.
Speaker 4 (40:20):
The Olympians. Well, just like losing her we talked to too, right,
the Olympians. You'll find them at every Greek festival, which
is why we stagger them all out.
Speaker 2 (40:31):
So Theens can tour right to Downey, to the Valley
Long Beach, Long Beach, to our friend Tommy Filottu's church
in in Downey right there.
Speaker 4 (40:43):
So not not the Olympians making us unique, although they
are great. They'll be in the house playing. But perhaps Matt,
the greatest man of any Greek church locally, Tony cost
Us not just a breadmaker and a master of the
somi and a mentor to all. Tony cost Us inform
(41:04):
me that he will be singing with the Olympians at
eight thirty tomorrow night, and that's a big deal.
Speaker 2 (41:12):
So I know, well you'll be tomorrow night at eight thirty.
Speaker 4 (41:15):
Well, I mean, Matt, if I couldn't show up for
bouj Ubontan, you never know what part of my anxiety
is going to get the best of me. However, this
is pretty close to my house and it is my church.
Tomorrow night at eight thirty, Tony cost Us, one of
the great Greek Lithario krooners, certainly in Redondo Beach's gonna perform.
(41:39):
So come on out and eat some squid. It's very popular.
They usually run out of food at some point on Sunday,
So I would say try to get there early and
eat on Sunday. Guidos and squid are the most popular,
delicious They go first, and then the fries go and
then you're stuck with the moa or pasticho, which is
(42:02):
pretty good too.
Speaker 2 (42:04):
If I may ask it dumb, well, I don't think
it's a dumb question because the one in Long Beach
that the family did you ever be done?
Speaker 4 (42:11):
Well, you know, was the last thing you ever did
that was done the Catholics.
Speaker 2 (42:16):
You know, carnivals are well known for. It's just basically
a parking lot full of carnival rides. Yeah, does Saint
Catherines have the zipper the scene? Who's the slot? Like,
do they do that part of it? Or no?
Speaker 4 (42:30):
That is not I mean there are some games and
maybe like a bounce house or something, a few things
for kids, but no zipper. But well, we're interested in
is eating, right? We're interested. There will be a chanting. Uh,
my brother will do some chanting. Run it back, run
it back, run back to bazouki. My brother will be
doing some chanting, I believe on display. I hope that's popular.
(42:52):
Of course you can buy your worry beads and econas
and and different things like that. There'll be little stores
selling Greek stuff. But the food, the drinking, and the
bazooki band that's the centerpiece. I believe that's the attract
and the church. Of course, in our Orthodox faith.
Speaker 2 (43:08):
Affordable jewelry was always something that I would pick up
at You have that as a Greek fest? Yeah? Did
a nice no do key ring or something?
Speaker 4 (43:14):
You know, it's you know, it's hard to believe that
something's not affordable at the Greek Fest. You know, we're
not talking about going to Disneyland, stand at Club thirty three.
Speaker 2 (43:23):
Right, getting the thirty dollars corn dog that everybody says
is the greatest corn dog ever made. But it still
costs you like thirty bucks.
Speaker 4 (43:28):
Yeah, that's it's a sour taste in your.
Speaker 2 (43:30):
Mouth, yes, no matter how delicious it is.
Speaker 4 (43:33):
Both my brothers, my sister, everybody's kids will be there.
Sixty first year of the Saint Catherine Greek Festival, seven
twenty two, knob Hill Avenue, Minando Beach five to ten tonight,
noon to ten Saturday noon to nine Sunday, Tony cost
Us and the Olympians, mister Sami live at eight thirty
(43:55):
on Saturday, and Matt, I don't want to, you know,
I don't want to say. It's like saying, yeah, Jackson
Brown's gonna come and he's gonna bring his guitar and play.
You know what I mean. You don't know, you don't
want to guarantee. But Tony Kostas will most probably dance
a traditional zimbekiko, which means excellent palasburt. He's running back
(44:18):
from the early nineties. George Lacto will probably also dance
as zimbechio, and then that means much like a feeding
frenzy amongst sharks that was described in Jaws when all
those guys got eaten. Then there'll be a lineup of
different guys doing this at Bechio, of different ages and
of different levels of being you know, super Greek. Sure,
(44:40):
I'm a pretty low level of being super Greek.
Speaker 6 (44:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (44:43):
I think you get in that environment though, and you
can find yourself.
Speaker 4 (44:45):
I'm just compared to these people, right, you know, these
people are you know, these are the people and I
love them all and I've known of my whole lives.
But these are the people. You know, whenever I go
to church like I was last week, and they're like,
you're walking a little up at all. So, I mean,
(45:06):
you know, I'm kind of a you know, I'm a
little bit of a novelty. But my son's in the
altar and Dimitri's a salty, so.
Speaker 2 (45:11):
They got that.
Speaker 4 (45:12):
Do you will you believe my father was run out
of the quarter?
Speaker 2 (45:17):
Will you? And the family were, uh, will you all
wear like matching funny Greek shirts that say like it's
all Greek to me?
Speaker 4 (45:26):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (45:26):
Yeah, every year, you know, every year, right, a new one.
Speaker 4 (45:29):
All right, you know, ancient, you know, like a Greek.
Speaker 2 (45:32):
You know, there's Greece on my shirt and it's the grease,
you know, like that.
Speaker 4 (45:37):
And I do want to self report and file a
self report. I offered. I offered twenty cost us that
I would take tickets on Sunday and they said, yeah,
you could work some shifts. And I didn't get back
to them, but I could get back to them now,
you know, and see if they need I've got some booze.
(45:59):
I like to take tickets.
Speaker 3 (46:01):
Ah, take a picker, so I have the big face.
Speaker 4 (46:03):
You know, the first thing you see when you walk
in is my big ass face. Oh, welcome to you. Exactly.
It's like a blimp.
Speaker 2 (46:12):
So I's over there, chanting over there, right.
Speaker 4 (46:16):
But the one thing that's hard for me as like
a middle aged man now is like, you know, there's
a certain price for young people, and a certain price
for old people, and a certain price for everybody in
the middle. And it's really hard to kind of like gauge,
you know, because you don't want to give like a
forty five year old the elderly one, you know what
(46:37):
I mean.
Speaker 2 (46:38):
Well, I think you charge all of them for the
middle age, because it's a compliment if they're like, hey,
I'm a senior citizen, you're paying I'm a compliment.
Speaker 4 (46:48):
I ran into that last time. But you know, I
Tony costs this text in me, but I don't. I
forgot to put the number in my phone, and you know,
every idiot in the world texts me and then it
gets buried, and you know, so Tony cost us to say.
At a thirty I'll probably be hanging around Christos, my
brother's son from Greece, who is very authentically Greek. We'll
(47:09):
be there with his girlfriend Bella so and Tassos and
with his swollen arms.
Speaker 2 (47:15):
Bella also Greek.
Speaker 4 (47:16):
She's she I'm not as sure if she is of
Greek heritage, although it would be hard to know because
I think she's born and raised in Greece. Right, she
may be of Albanian heritage.
Speaker 2 (47:28):
Okay, yeah, but.
Speaker 4 (47:30):
I'm not exactly sure. You thought she was like yanni'stentum
Kuopu's sister.
Speaker 2 (47:36):
I just didn't know, you know, is did he meet her?
You know, Europe is a lot closer than we are
here in the CITs. Maybe he meets her abroad or something,
you know what I mean. She's the Italian or situation.
Speaker 4 (47:46):
The other day, she looked like she knew her way
around the Greek church, gotcha? So anyway, wonderful love the Meryfist,
very exciting festival in Saint Catherine. Say hi to Father
Mike and uh, we'll be back.
