city of Downey. We watch a lot of city council meetings,
Matt and I do, and we love all the local
places and it feels like you guys run a real
tight ship. You guys take pretty good care of each other,

and you have good decorum in your quorum.

We try, yeah, we try very professional. It's always been
that way.

It always has been that way. We always I always
say we can agree to disagree, and let's not be
disagreeable to each other. And we think that is really
important to love that. But I have a great council.
We have a great city. Most importantly, we have the
best staff. I do want to recognize the director of
Parks and rec Jason Chacon here, he brought Apollo. Yes,

that's and you know what we just have. We have
a lot of fun because we love this community community.
I think so. From from the birthplace of the Apollo
space system to now we are a city. Did you
know we are the official FIFA fan zone.

Yes, we did know that.

We reported on that some six weeks ago when it
was announced the watch zone for the FIFA.

And so what we're going to do is right here
in this Stonewood Center, which is you know the heart
of our of our city. There will be the fan
zone right here, about fifteen thousand people to free event everybody.

And they're going to be able to watch all the
matches that day June twentieth, and then there's some surprises.

a bit on the show. My fam my wife's family
has a very strong connection with Downey. My brother in
law lived in Downey for a long time off casanas,
and I have many times told the tale of celebrating
the Fourth of July at his house in the city

of Downey. And I don't know what you guys have
going on with your fireworks policy, but I'll be damned
if there is not a city that celebrates the Fourth
of July with fireworks in every single neighborhood street, like
the city of Downey.

Is that something you are proud of?

What say you about how Downy celebrates the Fourth of July?

Darn we had to go there, Yeah, we did to
do absolutely. You know, we're a very patriotic city. Yes,
love our country, yes, USA. And but also we we
love our fireworks and we love to support the various
local nonprofit community organizations that sell the sane and sane sure,

the League of Justice, we think about the heroes that

of California is a series of superheroes.

is the League of California. The League of California Cities
represents represents all of the cities throughout the state of California.
And I have served and we push, we lobby for
legislation that really preserves local control and we have to

chair of the Public Safety Legislative Committee some years ago
and we pushed for Prop thirty six. And then now
I'm in the in the Housing Legislative Committee, and so
that's that's what I do. But in your sense, we

Yeah, I think what'll be interesting is what happens in
front of them. You know, you don't know who's going
to be available at five, because you don't know who's
going to be picked in the first four. You know
a lot of this and people just think best available,
best available player, but a lot of it's team neat
and so if you need somebody that maybe wasn't rated
as high or on mock drafts as high, they might

be taken because that was a team Neat. But certainly
they're going to get a really really good player at five,
and what most people are saying is one of the
best drafts in at least the last ten years.

No, I wasn't. You know, without Luca, you knew it
was probably going to be a struggle. But I just
think the Oklahoma City and you know, I don't think
anybody's gonna beat them for a while. And again, it's
not a one game or two games. I'm talking seven
game series. You got to beat them four times, and
that's without Jalen Williams. Right now. I mean, we don't

know the future, but I just think this team's gonna
rip off four or five six, not in a row,
but four or five six in the next seven eighty.
I really believe that. I mean, watching them, who's going
to beat them? Like I guess the Spurs could mature
and get older. They're a little young right now when
min Yama could continue to get better, but I just

don't see it with their culture, the people they have.
They have another first round pick this year, I think
it's twelve.

So what's the best way to try to contend with that?
If you're the Lakers? Is it bringing Lebron back or
is it trying to find better pieces around Luca and
Austin Reeves?

That's the heart, Matt. We talk about this all the time,
Pete with you guys like they're kind of in the
middle in the sense that they're really not a contender.
Yes they made the playoffs and yes they won a series,
but they're really not contending right now with the Thunder
or even the Spurs, or probably even the Knicks. So
what do you do, like adding a player to what
is that gonna get you over the hump? I don't know.

And so that's the hard part for these front office people,
was like do we keep banging our head against the
wall and trying to add a piece that might close
the gap or do we just say, you know what,
We're going to start with these two guys, Reeves and Datcicch,
and we're going to strip it down. But people who
don't want to hear that are Reeves and Datchich. So
that's the hard part, you know. It's it's like, it's

the way stam Pressy has done this. And I spent
some time with them in Chicago, just kind of he
was asking me about our guys, but I was asking
him about, you know, the approach that he has and
how he's done it. He's like, look, we get to
know the player, and he has hit on everybody, like
he made the Paul George trade, I think, knowing that

he was getting all those picks, but he knew we
didn't know. But he knew that SGA was going to
be a superstar, and sure enough he is.

not in a position where they could lose an established
star player, all star type caliber player in him, so
they're going to have to pay him. And I think
that's again, like I said earlier, that's where you start. Okay,
we got Luca and Reed's two known commodities. Now what
do we do? And I think that's the job for

Rob fulinco and his staff is like figuring out money
wise and talent wise, what do we put around him
to be better than we were this year.

And I don't think the article had the effect that
the people that wrote it thought it would as far
as sympathy toward the King goes. But I mean, a
guy's forty one years old and he's accomplished almost everything
you could try to accomplish it. That's a pretty amazing story,

best available player, but a lot of it's team neat
and so if you need somebody that maybe wasn't rated
as high or on mock drafts as high, they might

be taken because that was a team Neat. But certainly
they're going to get a really really good player at five,
and what most people are saying is one of the
best drafts in at least the last ten years.

was probably going to be a struggle. But I just

that's without Jalen Williams. Right now. I mean, we don't

know the future, but I just think this team's gonna
rip off four or five six, not in a row,
but four or five six in the next seven eighty.
I really believe that. I mean, watching them, who's going
to beat them? Like I guess the Spurs could mature
and get older. They're a little young right now when

don't see it with their culture, the people they have.
They have another first round pick this year, I think

That's the heart, Matt. We talk about this all the time,
Pete with you guys like they're kind of in the
middle in the sense that they're really not a contender.
Yes they made the playoffs and yes they won a series,
but they're really not contending right now with the Thunder
or even the Spurs, or probably even the Knicks. So
what do you do, like adding a player to what
is that gonna get you over the hump? I don't know.

And so that's the hard part for these front office people,
was like do we keep banging our head against the
wall and trying to add a piece that might close
the gap or do we just say, you know what,
We're going to start with these two guys, Reeves and Datcicch,
and we're going to strip it down. But people who
don't want to hear that are Reeves and Datchich. So
that's the hard part, you know. It's it's like, it's

the way stam Pressy has done this. And I spent
some time with them in Chicago, just kind of he
was asking me about our guys, but I was asking
him about, you know, the approach that he has and
how he's done it. He's like, look, we get to
know the player, and he has hit on everybody, like
he made the Paul George trade, I think, knowing that

he was getting all those picks, but he knew we
didn't know. But he knew that SGA was going to
be a superstar, and sure enough he is.

was a story about Lebron. It was written in a
pro Lebron way, but I don't think made him look
great about him getting all butt hurt when he didn't

Lebron and goes off into the la night all angry.
And I don't think the article had the effect that
the people that wrote it thought it would as far
as sympathy toward the King goes. But I mean, a
guy's forty one years old and he's accomplished almost everything
you could try to accomplish it. That's a pretty amazing story,

Yeah, I didn't see the story. I was busy last week.
But I will say this, I think Lebron, in all
his greatness, and whether you like him or not, and
he's very polarizing. We've talked about him a lot on
the show. I do sense that he is going to
go somewhere where he can kind of have a chance

to win, and I think he understands that this Laker
team right now doesn't really have a chance to win.
Speaker 3 (24:38):
So where is that?
Speaker 7 (24:38):
Does he go to the Knicks, who are pretty close,
like I think they're going to be in the finals.
Can they beat Okay se or San Antonio? Probably not,
but he had a guy like Lebron, maybe you can.
So it'll be interesting to see what he does. I
don't think he comes back to the Lakers, but maybe
I'm wrong. I think he's going to go somewhere where
he thinks he has a chance to make a run
at it one probably one final time.

You mentioned you talked to Sam Press, to the architect
of the thunder seems I mean, there's really nothing you
can do but celebrate the way they put that team together,
the market they're in, how they've got to try to
figure out how to make it work financially, over spending
for some guys and trying to keep everybody else without
leaving for New York or LA or Miami. It's incredibly impressive. Yet,
don I mentioned this the other day. I don't know

if you would agree with it, but it feels like
people don't want to see them win again. They're like
already over it after one one championship. They're excited about
Wembin Yama and the Spurs even though they've won a
bunch of titles already. Obviously understandably, they're excited about the
Knicks getting into the conference finals via sweep and be
in the favorite to make the NBA Finals. But do
you get that sense as well that for whatever reason,

they feel like this is such a juggernaut they just
as soon see it get kicked off the tracks early.
Speaker 7 (25:50):
I do get that sense, mad, but good luck with it? Like,
how is it going to get kicked off the tracks?
All right? Unless there's injury? Right, Like this ain't gonna
happen like they're And again it's yes, they have very
very good players, Holmegrin's gotten better, SGAs one of the
best players in the league, Carusa, all the guys that
they have, But it's really about their culture, and you

know what's crazy about that? And I don't know if
you guys notice this, because I do because I have
to interview players after big ten games now and they
started the whole the whole team comes over. When one
guy's getting interviewed, you guys notice that. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
it's the most annoying thing ever if you're doing.
