Speaker 1 (00:11):
So sorry, can you stop the show for a moment.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
I'm sorry.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
It's not that I don't like Gary Klein, it's that
this has just become stupid, like I don't want to
talk to him that pat.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
You know what I mean.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Like yesterday there was like this crazy uh, there was
this crazy push to get Gary Klein on, however, and
we promoted that Gary Klein from the La Times was
gonna come on. Why because Aaron Donald did like two
sets of military press at the RAMS facility and we
have to do to get ten minutes time.
Speaker 4 (00:54):
I mean, you know, listen, that's that's a big deal.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Well yeah, that's fine. But they were like they put
it on the rundown and all this. So I'm like,
Gary Klein's coming on, like I'm teasing Magic Johnson's coming on.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
And then they're like, well, actually he never got back
to us. I was like, so I'm just screaming into
the Grand Canyon.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
It's like a guest that I don't even need, and
now he's not coming on. That was yesterday, and now
today I walk into the studio in Zach from Libya,
our our.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Interim producer.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
Today, Zach goes, Gary Kline is coming on to their
three throw.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
I'm like, get out.
Speaker 5 (01:34):
I don't care see because this I'm gonna take it
out on climb because.
Speaker 4 (01:37):
Nobody's got respect for formattics.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
All right.
Speaker 5 (01:39):
There used to be teasing, used to be important.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Gary Klink's coming on. I was like, what that was yesterday? Yesterday?
Speaker 2 (01:49):
He came up to me.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
I walk in, We got four hours. I got six
foot ten Don McClain saying, I'm gonna drag Walton and
Lanier up and down the court. Tell your old man
to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court.
I'm sitting here with Don McLain and Zach comes up
to me with like five stacks of paper like Victor Ortiz.
Victor Ortiz, Like what about Victor Ortiz? Oh, there's gonna interview.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
When the interview was today?
Speaker 3 (02:16):
And he's bothering me about it yesterday, worried about what's
going on today?
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Yesterday? I got four hours with Bob.
Speaker 4 (02:22):
Laniir Zach Box's by the way, I know.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Yes, you know.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
And I'm like introducing everybody yesterday. I'm going through it
and I'm like trying to save the best for last
and like bring Ronnie in.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
But Ronnie's like, hey, what about me?
Speaker 3 (02:42):
It's like I'm deading to you, you know, I mean,
it's just hard man. Anyway, Gary Klein is coming on.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
For those of you yesterday who were like, god, damn it,
I didn't get enough about Aaron Donald doing three sets
of triy have pushdowns at the RAM facility.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
I mean, listen, spoiler alert, idiots.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
Aaron Donald's gonna come back in like October, okay, and
everybody's gonna have a big freaking.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
And by the way, local orgasm over it.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
I mean, is it the more God? Isn't the more
interesting story?
Speaker 2 (03:26):
Finally, Ronnie's porn sound?
Speaker 4 (03:30):
Is it the the more more interesting story? What's going
on in Puka Deaku? Has he figured this thing out?
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (03:36):
No, he's okay, okay, Ever since biting that chest.
Speaker 5 (03:38):
And yelling f all the Jews like he was this
close to being Marv Albert?
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Yeah, well, hey, look, Marv Albert also made a great comeback.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
He did. He did, so I don't want to I
don't want to hear that negativity. Okay, yes, start the
show now, No, not yet.
Speaker 4 (03:53):
Marv Albert turned into a werewolf. He was so horned up.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
Jonas is still talking about Marv albert sexual proclivities.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Yes, all right, we can tell you so fund us
fund us, you.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
Maybe love a b he said.
Speaker 6 (04:15):
Oh, also, I got a bunch of crap yesterday.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Not crap, but Vic wants to know.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
You know, we always start the show unless it's the
fourth hour.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
I only will write three.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
Quotes per show, right, I write three quotes per show,
and we start the hour with the quotes. If the
show goes four hours, no quote, and Matt or me.
If Matt's not here, just raw dogs the last second.
Yesterday Matt wasn't here, right, and I do quote, and
(05:00):
I hit the gong.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
And that's that. But when Matt, when we first started
the show, I do the quote.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
Matt, I don't know. He was kind of awkward about it,
so he would be like, and with that we began.
That's what he used to say. But now he says
something that he heard on Victor Bricks podcast that he
has now since he left the station. Who no, yeah,
Vic says, gongey yukes because his wife Yuko is standing
there by the gong, dutifully ready to hit a.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Gongley Yukes hi him to life.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
Right, So yesterday is if I can't, Like, you know,
I got Victor Ortiz papers in my face for an
interview that's not happening for twenty four hours. I got
people acting like Gary Klein, is Marco Rubio coming on
or like Lebron James coming on the show or something
(05:57):
like that, And I you know, and I.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
Get this text from Victor Brick yesterday. Are you ready?
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Let's hear it? It says, why aren't you saying gong
me yukes? And it's like, because I don't say that.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
That's that's what Matt says. But how am I going
to respond?
Speaker 3 (06:22):
So it's a point, And I want to know why
you didn't say gong me uke? Okay, So it's a
point I don't. I never said it, Like that's the
first time just now is the first time I ever
said it.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
I've never said it. So it's what Matt says.
Speaker 5 (06:39):
So Vic had to find out the hard way that
Matt cares more about his legacy than you do, because
Matt will drop the gong me yukes and you won't.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
Do it when Matt's not here.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Right, So basically another admonition here it is hype.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
Oh you want to hear this says, hip, how are you?
Speaker 3 (07:08):
Uko wants to know why you don't say quote gone
yukes like money says s e Z says after a
gong thank you, miss you.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
I don't say it. I've never said it.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
You gotta say it now.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
I'm I'm not saying it. I'm the one that does
the quote. I hit the cat's it.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
I don't say gong me utes. Matt says, gone me utes.
He heard Vic.
Speaker 4 (07:35):
Say, did Don say yesterday?
Speaker 2 (07:37):
No gong me use?
Speaker 4 (07:39):
By the way, I got a bone to pick with you.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
What did I do?
Speaker 5 (07:42):
You talk about me being a whore? You talk about
me being a slut, and you're sleeping around or stare
at your own ankles all day all the time. So
I'm horning myself out to Fred to Rodney, uh, Kevin
figures like that show is completely hijacked me and and
very upsetting.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
Yeah, I don't like it. And then I'm, you.
Speaker 5 (08:02):
Know, driving around yesterday going oh, but Don McLain, but
but you could, but you could wore yourself around with
Don mclan like.
Speaker 4 (08:09):
That's going on here?
Speaker 3 (08:10):
We are just because some horse shakes her ass.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
Well.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
First of all, Don McClain was the very first guest
weekly guest on the old Petros Papaeca show on fifteen
forty the ticket.
Speaker 4 (08:23):
So I'm the side piece after the side piece on
this show.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
I would say, if you were the boyfriend of girl
that hooks up with an NBA guy, right, yeah, Don
is the NBA guy. He was just in town playing
at the Sports Arena against the Clippers.
Speaker 7 (08:43):
That's fair.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
I was at his house all weekend.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
You were unable to get a hold, Okay, And now
Monday rolls around and I'm like, hey, well, after this week,
my NBA guy he's left.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
But uh no, Jonas, we do try to mix it up.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
And I believe because of your loose ways with some
other shows that perhaps you know, we've shied away.
Speaker 4 (09:04):
Are you saying that my woom is.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
A little a little bit polled at this point?
Speaker 4 (09:08):
Okay? Very That's that's why it's fair.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
Now that being super guess, guess who's coming on next?
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Who's Carrie Climb.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
Jonas Knox is here as our co host. Everybody loves
Jonas Knox. He does a great job on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
The host.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
You have two pros and a cup of Joe every
morning prime time on the East.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
Coast, three o'clock.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
In the morning out of here with Brady Quinn and
LeVar Arrington. I'll be on there tomorrow at five am.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
Are you working here the rest of the.
Speaker 5 (09:43):
Week, Yeah, but we with Steve Hartman coming up tomorrow
on Thursday.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
You're working. Does your wife want to stab you when
you walk into the house.
Speaker 5 (09:52):
Well, yeah, but I think that's you know, that's kind
of inherited. That that's you know, that sort of temperature.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
It's not because you're working so much.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
No, I mean she she likes the money.
Speaker 4 (10:02):
We gotta make money for free.
Speaker 5 (10:05):
And also you know, it's it's it's not like we're
actually doing work.
Speaker 4 (10:09):
I mean the two shows that is.
Speaker 5 (10:11):
Not being on it three in the morning and then
three in the afternoon in the same day does kind
of send you off into a little bit of a
weird mental space.
Speaker 4 (10:19):
It's kind of odd.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
You know. Well, wait till you get a load of
Victor Ortiz.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
I want to do that six o'clock or Victor hortis
his heavy hair.
Speaker 7 (10:30):
Walks.
Speaker 5 (10:31):
I would I would normally, I would normally refer to
it as as as knock snard like I have, But
I don't want to disrespect the guys.
Speaker 4 (10:37):
I'm not even gonna bring it up.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
Yeah, Victor, those are the I mean, nobody could be
more excited than Zach the libbyan Elk for the fact
that Victor Ortiz is going to be here. Because Zach
is like a fighting efficient and you are a little
bit too, Yeah, a little bit. Every fighting guy has
a little bit of a creepy side to him, a
little bit of like a line up beard.
Speaker 5 (10:57):
Size, Yeah, line up beard, white zombie shirt middle of summer.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
Since one of those hats and super expensive melonin or
melon or whatever.
Speaker 4 (11:05):
Mellon, I was one of the originals, by the way,
to have a melon hat. I'll get the fact.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
I'll give you that.
Speaker 4 (11:09):
Twenty fifteen, I got my first melon hat.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
I'll give you that.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
That's documented well as far as our schedule goes. And
maybe check me on this, Zach, to make sure Dave
doesn't mute me.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
I wish you could hit more doubles, but uh, no time,
there's never any time.
Speaker 4 (11:26):
I don't have time to study.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
I'll never get in this schedule talk.
Speaker 3 (11:34):
Okay, so this is the most important thing everybody, Zach,
look at me. I don't know if you knew this.
Aaron Donald's in the facility Woodland Hills and he's been
doing work. We get some leg extensions and we're going
to talk to Gary Klein in the La Times all.
Speaker 5 (11:48):
About it, Carrie, what did that hack squat machine look
like when he was on?
Speaker 3 (11:52):
It was he in the ram rack. So we're gonna
have Gary Kline on. Nobody has worked harder to get
And first of all, this is what I'd also like
to know, Zach for a moment. Why are you guys
doing in there working out stuff? I mean, they always
look like they're signing the Magna carta in there when
I look in there, you.
Speaker 4 (12:13):
Know it's a problem.
Speaker 3 (12:15):
When uh, when uh, when Gary Klein comes on, act
like you've been there. Okay, don't get too excited. I
don't know why it was so difficult for us to
get the beat rider for the rams on for the
La Times on at the first place yesterday, Like I
don't know why. He's like Eric Eric Metcalf returning a
punt like so elusive.
Speaker 5 (12:37):
I don't know why that happened. That's our Jordan, Jordan Schultz.
We were supposed to have Jordan Schultz on for like
four straight weeks. Jordan, that was the guy that almost
fought Ian Rappaport at the combine.
Speaker 4 (12:48):
He was his dad, Howard.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
So Jordan Schultz, that was the NFL inside that one
guy's like six eight, the other guys like five to two.
Speaker 2 (12:58):
You don't take Mary Klein, you're tweeting.
Speaker 5 (13:01):
So Jordan Schultz tried to beat up some garden noome
in Indianapolis, and everybody's got theirs out, and so.
Speaker 2 (13:08):
Mike Garafolo comes over, Look, you don't want to do
this going we have.
Speaker 5 (13:11):
We have been promoting it for weeks. He just never
showed up. Never, And I look like a horse's ass
because I'm tweeting ahead, you know, because.
Speaker 4 (13:20):
We care about the formattics.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
Sorry, we were old square saying that I don't.
Speaker 5 (13:23):
No listen, I'm with you, I feel your pain, and
then only to find out, yeah, Jordan Schultz is not
gonna make it work. That's not gonna happen on this show.
It's like, Okay, well, apparently he's got bigger things to do.
Speaker 3 (13:32):
I've been treated like Victor Ortiz and Gary Klein is
like having like Charles de Gaull and Winston Churchill's ghost on,
like like I walked into work yesterday exactly. If he
opens up a peachy folder, It's like, what's Victor Ortiz
(13:54):
Paradugle's boxing?
Speaker 2 (13:58):
Like, did Jack.
Speaker 3 (13:59):
London ride us story about it? What are we talking about?
For God's Father.
Speaker 4 (14:04):
I'll be honest with you. I'm a little disorient and
I haven't seen the new studio.
Speaker 5 (14:07):
I couldn't figure out how to turn down the headphones
until fine, it's wild in Sherman Oaks. We got cockroaches,
bums and catalytic converter thiefs.
Speaker 3 (14:18):
I mean I came here the first day when they
changed the studio and nothing worked, like I couldn't use
the talk back.
Speaker 2 (14:24):
I was like, yeah, that's cool.
Speaker 3 (14:25):
I don't not the host of the show or communicate
with anybody.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
What's the point. I'll just wing it all right. It's
better when we wing it anyway.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
So in the first hour, Gary Klein what what sort?
And I love Gary Kline? What he was he covered
usc when I was first working. What exercises was Aaron
Donald doing when it was a look on his face
while he was doing him? Did he go did he
use the bathroom in the facility? If he did, what
(14:57):
was the repercussions of that? Did pookin coos se him
when he was doing it.
Speaker 5 (15:01):
If you were standing next to him in the yurinal,
did you say, hey, that's a nice watch, you know,
like that's old you can drop one.
Speaker 4 (15:07):
Of those lines on him.
Speaker 5 (15:09):
I'm just saying, man, let's get to the bottom of
this stuff. This is July football talk. And let me
just spoiler alert. Aaron Donald's coming back. He's not working
out at the first course.
Speaker 3 (15:20):
And yet we're talking to Gary Klein for no reason,
for no reason, and then in our final hour Victor Ortiz.
Between then and now, you guessed it, everybody. David Vesse
will join the show why not to talk about whatever
he's gonna do for off night Dodger talk in a
(15:40):
couple of days. But a big thank you to fully
functional employee Adam who does a great job. He helped
us out in the prep zone. Is he leaving? Is
Adam gonna leave? Did he leave? Did he leave? So
we're not gonna have any more Clipper talks. A lot
of intense Clipper talk yesterday.
Speaker 4 (15:56):
He didn't have to flip us off on the way out.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
No he didn't.
Speaker 3 (15:59):
But that's the nature of how people are.
Speaker 4 (16:03):
Ronnie's really setting a tone back.
Speaker 3 (16:04):
You work on Rogan and Rodney show, enough you get pretty.
I mean, those guys, you're not inheriting a happy bunch,
you know what I mean. It's like it's you're not
like the bus driver picking up like a chipper.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
Group of kids.
Speaker 5 (16:15):
I mean, I feel like I have to have a
picture of beer now to calm myself down a little bit.
Speaker 3 (16:20):
Well, maybe all of in time downstairs in the building
will accommodate.
Speaker 2 (16:24):
So maybe the Wiener schnitz lacross the street, Hey do
have beer as well, but a big thing you can.
Speaker 3 (16:28):
Adam and our Libyan friend, Zach el con el Cotti,
el COTTI is.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
That what it is?
Speaker 7 (16:46):
El Caldy, el Caldy, damn it.
Speaker 3 (16:50):
This is his Libyan. This is the what they listen
to and the nightlife in Tripoli.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
Zach is Libyan.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
He has an interest in mouie tie fighting.
Speaker 4 (17:05):
Oh yeah, lovemoay Thai.
Speaker 3 (17:07):
His lineup beard formerly a stand up comedian, A former comedian,
a lot like Rich Eisen had a big supporter of
anybody in the World Cup who isn't Argentina.
Speaker 2 (17:26):
Oh wow, said they were cheaters yesterday and they.
Speaker 7 (17:29):
Are I mean.
Speaker 5 (17:33):
Specifics are we just gonna make reckless allegations here on
the air.
Speaker 7 (17:40):
I did this yesterday Withal.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
He tried to act like, you know what the red.
Speaker 8 (17:44):
I could pull up the whole inventory of the things
they committed, not just in this World Cup in twenty
twenty two against Netherlands and France.
Speaker 7 (17:51):
I mean it goes on Jonas.
Speaker 4 (17:52):
It was an entire segment on yesterday's show.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
Well okay, so but I would call them cheaters and
then the guy from Ethiopia came in and arted yelling
that they were that Argentina's cheater.
Speaker 7 (18:02):
I might have hurt Don's feelings too.
Speaker 8 (18:04):
I felt bad that I kind of stomped over his Like, yeah,
I felt bad about that bad.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
Yeah, he didn't tell me. I don't ever want to
work with that guy.
Speaker 4 (18:10):
Yeah, but you're a white tie fighter. You can do
what every the hell you want.
Speaker 7 (18:13):
I mean, I don't like to carry myself like Connor McGregor.
Speaker 4 (18:18):
Don't do blow.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
It's it's easy.
Speaker 3 (18:28):
You know. This song makes me want to jump in
the back and like a white pickup with a Mountain
sixteen on the back and just like take just start spring.
Speaker 5 (18:39):
There used to be a uh there there was a
hookah bar in Westwood called Gypsy back in the day,
and my ex worked there and every time we walked in.
Speaker 4 (18:50):
Like this type of music was being playing.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
Three orders of Cairo Flame.
Speaker 5 (18:55):
I don't and I don't smoke hookah or anything, but
they would serve these thirty six ounds beers and we
would just get buckled.
Speaker 4 (19:04):
It was tremendous. And you just walk out of there
and you see a bunch of weirdos in west on.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
A roll with my friend in all white like work
a mortar, turn it up?
Speaker 4 (19:19):
Will this be your walkout song?
Speaker 2 (19:21):
On b KB?
Speaker 4 (19:22):
This is what he walks out to the on the
RT's undercard.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
I like to think of Zach when he.
Speaker 3 (19:26):
Fights as that one guy who like held his hand
like Iranian fighter in blood Sport. Remember the guy that
held his hands out all weird and was like jumping back.
Speaker 7 (19:35):
He was a fighter too.
Speaker 2 (19:36):
See there you go, just like Zach.
Speaker 4 (19:39):
Wasn't dolls of the muy Thai fighter and street fighter?
Speaker 2 (19:42):
Du Yeah? I think Dalsham was.
Speaker 7 (19:44):
The That's the Indian fighter, right.
Speaker 4 (19:49):
I like Chung Lee personally, Chong Lee Jong Lee.
Speaker 5 (19:52):
Why hasn't moy Thai gotten more popular in the States.
Speaker 4 (19:57):
Who doesn't like it? It's crazy. Just put it on
to you.
Speaker 5 (20:00):
These guys are savages and post the way they train
their shins growing up, like they'll kick tree stumps.
Speaker 3 (20:06):
I got we've all seen the John Claude movie and
I guess we're over.
Speaker 7 (20:09):
It by bad.
Speaker 8 (20:10):
Actually, Sagging or Sagat is the multi fighter and street fighter.
Speaker 4 (20:15):
That's right, Yeah, yeah, he's.
Speaker 7 (20:16):
Based on a real person.
Speaker 3 (20:17):
Thank you, zach Our Libyan, Fred Is there anybody you're
rotten for left in the world cup or is it
all Infidels? No?
Speaker 7 (20:26):
I guess it's Spain or England, one of the two.
Speaker 3 (20:30):
What about are you the Argentina's a bunch of cheaters? Yeah, okay,
all right, we'll be backed. You can kill the Libyan music.
Let Ronnie play something cool. I like that though it
really does want to make me, you know, get out
in the desert and do some illegal stuff.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
But we'll be back.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
We will talk to one of the most anticipated guests,
not since Schultz, Jordan Schultz was supposed to go on
Two Pros and a Cup of Joe to talk about
it star Bucks Fight.
Speaker 2 (21:02):
With Ian Rappaport.
Speaker 3 (21:04):
Has there been such an anticipated NFL insider coming on
the radio, and that is in the form of a bespectacled,
good looking, middle aged man who wears at a time
in his life. And I used to make fun of
him for it for years. And his wife, I don't
believe ever forgive forgave me. And there was a time
(21:25):
that he wore Arizona jeans.
Speaker 7 (21:28):
I mean J C.
Speaker 4 (21:29):
Penny. Yeah, come on, it was that her Britannia.
Speaker 2 (21:32):
It's not okay.
Speaker 3 (21:35):
We're covering USC football and the Pete carol Ara. We
got to do better than this, at least some silver taps.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
We'll be back with more petros and money. Gary Klein
will join us on LAS. Get me and money on
your smart speaker.
Speaker 9 (22:01):
Just say Alexa, play a M five seventy l a
sports on iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (22:20):
Beautiful cracking, everybody, welcome back.
Speaker 3 (22:24):
Tell me he's not ready, Zach tell me, Oh god,
I wish we missed him.
Speaker 2 (22:29):
Never have we worked so hard to get a guest on.
Speaker 3 (22:33):
I wonder how many times we've called him, like thirty
times to get Gary Klyine on, because one guide does
one bench press and one freaking thing, and we have
to disturb. Mister Klein is very very reputable newsman, a.
Speaker 2 (22:48):
Fabulous newspaper man.
Speaker 3 (22:50):
Lady says fine, and his name is Gary Klyn from
the La Times. I met him on the old Pete
Carroll USC beat back in the day. He used to
be a regular on the Petros Papaeca show on fifteen forty.
The Ticket now a Korean station, but now he covers
(23:10):
the big pro team in town because he is the
number one beat guy.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
The La Rams for the La Times. How big of
a deal is he?
Speaker 3 (23:21):
We've been trying to get him on for thirty hours,
So here he is on yours Southern California Toyota Dealer
celebrity hotline.
Speaker 10 (23:31):
Gary, how are you pstros? It's great to be back
with you.
Speaker 2 (23:36):
Oh, you're the best. Gary. How many times have we
called you? Gary?
Speaker 3 (23:40):
How much have you been harrissed here in the middle
of the summer while you're trying to have a nice
time with your family and relax in the Pasadena the
greater Pasadena area.
Speaker 10 (23:49):
Not too many times. And Tim, of course, been with
you for a long time. He tried, and we finally
connected at a time that works for everyone.
Speaker 2 (23:58):
Were you yesterday, Gary? Are you raging waters?
Speaker 3 (24:01):
What were you doing? Were you did you have a
doctor appointment? Or something like what was I mean, we
think of ourselves as pretty important around here. I would
like to think, you know, we call everybody jumps, like
like a Mexican jumping bean.
Speaker 2 (24:12):
Where were you? Well?
Speaker 10 (24:14):
I was probably going back many years. It's probably inn
a J. C. Penny pick up some of those you
like so much.
Speaker 3 (24:24):
Arizona Jeans brand, I'm no longer a brand, but we
still talk about it today. How big of a deal
was it, Gary? To be honest with us, that Aaron
Donald showed up to work out. It kind of feels
like everybody sort of knows what's coming here.
Speaker 2 (24:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (24:40):
I think he's obviously testing the waters, testing his body,
and it seems like we're looking at a possible a
possible comeback. I don't know if it's I wouldn't say
it's official yet, but it looks like he's obviously considering that.
And uh, you know, you know as well anyone. Petro's
(25:01):
right from playing all those years. It's tough to play
after after being off and coming back and gett into
football shape. I think that's a very very difficult task.
But if anyone could do it, it would be Aaron Donald.
Speaker 7 (25:16):
Was Gary.
Speaker 5 (25:16):
It seems like they've kept the line the door open
for him since he left. And you hear McVeigh or
you hear les Need and you hear them talk about
it and say, hey, listen, you know that you know
would never say never. What what gave them the impression
that this was always a possibility that he could eventually
just decide I won't back in for another go.
Speaker 10 (25:37):
I think, you know, Jonas just his uh, you know,
the makeup of Aaron Donald, what made him, along with
his physical ability, such a dominant player for so long.
You know, he stepped away and he was still playing
at a high level. And we've seen it throughout, you know,
decades of sports. These guys, especially these great ones, they're
(26:00):
when they say they're done, you know, sometimes they're not.
And mentally, you know, they say they're done, they've had it.
They can't give everything to the game, so they're going
to step away. And then they step away and they
you know, they miss it and then something like the
Miles Garrett trade happens, and you know everyone's getting excited again.
So it wouldn't be surprised, you know, whether it's for
(26:23):
a full season, whether it's you know, late in the season.
I think this is a story that's going to remain alive.
Speaker 2 (26:30):
And that's the interesting part about it.
Speaker 3 (26:32):
To me, Gary, and I would never compare myself, you know,
to anybody really who played pro football, because you know
my circumstance. But I have to say, if there's one
thing I know about NFL veteran types, Hall of Fame
veteran types that are toying with coming back or continuing
to play. I think of Tony Gonzalez, a guy that
(26:54):
was playing at Cal when I when I signed there.
They they don't necessarily not want to play, but they
sure as hell don't want to go to camp and
do the whole you know, they don't want to do
the whole install of everything again. And who can blame them?
And then you think about where the rams have to
start out. You know, they start out in Australia. My god,
you're going to go to Australia. And Clayton Kershaw did
(27:17):
that years ago with the Dodgers, and he came back
and he slipped a disc or something, you know. I mean,
that's a long trip and a long flight after a
very physical game. Do you think that factors into maybe
being a little bit later in the year for Aaron
Donald when he does.
Speaker 10 (27:31):
Come back, Yeah, I do. And or maybe it's you know,
later in training camp, maybe it's after the Rams are
gone from Loyal and Merrymount and are back to their facility,
because I don't think it's necessarily that they you know,
they're going to welcome him back in whatever capacity they
can get him if he wants to do that, and
(27:53):
I think it's going to be on his terms. This
isn't a situation where a team's going to say, you know,
if you want to do this, you must report by
this date, not with him, uh, and they'll they're just
going to they'll work with him, you know, to make
it work. I think the interesting thing is, you know,
guys like that that play at such a high level,
it's not they're physically gifted, but it's not just you
(28:15):
walk out on the field and you're you dominate, you know,
especially him after watching him, you know for as long
as I did in his career, there's a lot more
that goes into that than just stepping out on the
practice field. His film study, his body work, all that
kind of stuff is a huge commitment. And also, you know,
(28:36):
as physical as he is, those are like car wrecks
every Sunday that those guys are in and you know,
last time he played was two years ago, and now
you're coming back and you're going to have to deal
with that, you know again. So I think those are
all questions that you know, he's got to have to
him and his family have to look at. Is he
want to go through that again? And if he's doing it,
(28:57):
you know, he's not going to do it at a
low level. He's going to go all in, and you know,
it'll be interesting to see if he does come back,
how his body weathers.
Speaker 5 (29:06):
That Gary Puku has had a bit of a wild
off season, a lot of roller coaster right if you will,
and so or somebody else's but again, you know that's
it's just a it's.
Speaker 4 (29:19):
Been, it's been all over the place.
Speaker 5 (29:22):
How confident are they that he is figured this thing
out and they're going to get the best version of
him moving forward, both on and off the field.
Speaker 10 (29:31):
I think they're cautiously optimistic that, you know that they
will see some uh some improvement in in kind of
some of those situations that he was in. But I
think it's a wait and see, you know, I mean,
this is this is a guy that was on track
for a massive extension probably before this season, and now
(29:52):
I think that's all up in the air. I think,
and I think that you know, the Rams are right
and and and and apologize for Hey, Let's let's wait
and see how this plays out, how he goes through
the season, you know, before those kinds of talks really
gets serious. I mean, I'd be shocked if, based on
what's happened recently in the offseason, they said, oh, yeah,
(30:15):
we're ready to commit you know, this gigantic contract to
Puka until he proves that you know, he's staying on
the on the track that's best for him and best
for the Rams.
Speaker 3 (30:28):
Gary Klein and the La Times is our guest, the
coveted guest that we finally were able to wrangle and
catch up to tonight, and we are grateful because he
is ass advertised. Now, I want to ask you something
Gary that I think only you could really answer, given
the time that we spent together way back in the
day when Pete Carroll built and dominated at USC and
(30:52):
you were really on the forefront of that, covering it
with the La Times and all the different things, you know,
Carson Palmer, Mike Williams, Matt Liner, Reggie Bush, Lyndale, all
those different things. How does that compare to covering the
Rams now and LA finally has a profile. I mean,
there was no pro football team in town, and USC
(31:12):
was the biggest. They were the bes Knees. They were
bigger than the Lakers in town when Leonard and Bush
were here. I believe, how different is it covering the Rams?
And and do you often look back on the perspective
of what that one college football team and that one
time in Los Angeles was kind of like.
Speaker 10 (31:30):
Yeah, those were some wild times, you know, because there
was no NFL team here, and and really, you know,
you were dealing with kids. I mean that, you know,
those are college kids getting into all kinds of situations,
you know, on and off the field, and they and
they were, you know, had fantastic talent and great success.
(31:53):
So they were covered, you know, I would say, even
more aggressively than maybe an NFL team have been. And
the NFL's you know, much more buttoned up. The guys
I'm dealing with in the NFL, I would say, you know,
maybe you call them master They're they're graduated with Masters students,
so they're a little bit more mature, they have more
(32:13):
at stake, or they actually recognize they have more at stake,
so you know, they may not get into as many
of those situations as the guys that USC got into.
Speaker 3 (32:24):
How often do you find yourself Gary telling stories about
the early two thousands and the wild I mean, I
know college football there's no rules now, but it really
felt like there were no rules then. How often do
you tell stories about that guy? I mean, does does
Kelly Stafford want to hear stories about Uscno?
Speaker 7 (32:43):
Too?
Speaker 5 (32:45):
No?
Speaker 10 (32:45):
I you know, it's funny, Petros, because I thought when
I left that beat and went to the rams that,
you know, I would be thinking about those times all
the time. And I guess I'm just too busy. Yeah,
I was trying to learn, no seriously, But when someone
brings it up and we talked and you drop those names,
of course, you know, it brings back a lot of
you know, memories because that was a very very very
(33:08):
This is pretty much pre internet, right, so it's like
a very competitive beat and you remember guys you know,
Scott Wolf and Todd Harmonson and the other people that
were on that beat. It was very very competitive and
there was and there you had to really be on
your toes because something at usc Otter off the field
was happening every day and or every it seemingly every night,
(33:32):
and you know, it really helped me cut my teeth
as a reporter. That was such a competitive beat that
when I look back on it and all the crazy
stuff that happened, you know, their fond memories. They're fond
memories not only covering you know, a program that came
back and had success, but just so many of those
(33:52):
situations were you know, some of them were tragic, some
of them were ridiculous, and but all of them you know,
made for you know, just a crazy time of us,
no doubt about it.
Speaker 5 (34:06):
I got to ask you about the Rams, and this
is going to be the most sports talk ish radio
ish question you.
Speaker 2 (34:13):
All, why don't you just why do you have to
couch it? Well?
Speaker 5 (34:16):
I mean, you know, I guessed in this much demand
that we've been talking about here right about that he.
Speaker 4 (34:23):
Deserves the goods here. So the run so Gary?
Speaker 5 (34:30):
Is it super Bowl or bust for the Rams?
Speaker 4 (34:36):
Overwhelming favorite to win it? Overwhelming favorite, absolutely, Joseph.
Speaker 10 (34:42):
Look at this is the super Bowl is at Sofi Stadium.
There Stan Kronk built that stadium. There's no way, no
way he wants anyone else walking that sideline on Super
Bowl Sunday. And you can look at everything the Rams
have done for this point, you know, and during this offseason,
you know, Trent mcduffy, Miles Garrett, you know, is Aaron
(35:04):
Donald coming back. This is all lined up for them
to play in and win the Super Bowl. And if
they don't, if they don't, uh, you know, I think
it's probably fair to say it's but you know, that's
a failure. They have to win this year. Everything is
lined up. They've you know, they've invested in the in
(35:25):
the players, they have the talent, and you know, if
they don't win, I think it will be recognized as
a major, major, major disappointment. This is a team and
the NFL is crazy, right, it's week to week. All
those cliches are all true. But this is a team
that is put together and built and has the capability
(35:46):
of winning.
Speaker 2 (35:46):
The Super Bowl.
Speaker 10 (35:47):
And if they don't, you know, I think I think
people should rightly feel like it's a disappointment.
Speaker 3 (35:54):
Well, you haven't disappointed, Gary, You you have hit it
out of the park.
Speaker 2 (35:59):
You were well worth the wait, well.
Speaker 3 (36:01):
I mean I feel like a woman waiting for her
husband to come back from World War Two, and I
spurned all the suitors like Penelope in the Odyssey, and
Gary came back and he showed me.
Speaker 2 (36:13):
He showed me what love was.
Speaker 3 (36:15):
But we love you, Gary, our best to you and
your family, and have a great year, and uh maybe
we'll be able to catch up with you down under.
What do you say, the best? The great Gary Klein?
What a star Arizona jeans? Notwithstanding you weren't an Arizona
That was great, Zach God, I feel like I need
(36:37):
a cigarette.
Speaker 4 (36:38):
You weren't an Arizona jeans guy. No, I mean yet, Arizona.
Speaker 5 (36:43):
You had britannyus from Kmart and then you had Anchor Blue.
Speaker 2 (36:47):
I'm sorry I have a little bit of a snob
in that way.
Speaker 3 (36:49):
I guess we had a We had a great d
N to Cal when I was there and we ended
up playing against him. Maybe he's a d M. Maybe
he's like an outside backer. His name was Seku Si.
Speaker 4 (37:00):
Yeah, Irish guy.
Speaker 2 (37:03):
He was black.
Speaker 3 (37:03):
Oh no kidding, Hey, yeah, I thought he was Irish
too when I saw his name, you know, way of
being recruited. But ye, Seku had had Arizona jeans, and
I remember him having a couple of sacks against us,
like when we played him in ninety eight, and I
was like, don't worry about that guy.
Speaker 2 (37:25):
That guy was Arizona.
Speaker 4 (37:27):
By the way, is Arizona.
Speaker 2 (37:28):
G They have dominated us on the eggs.
Speaker 4 (37:30):
Are they no longer around?
Speaker 2 (37:32):
I don't know. I don't know.
Speaker 3 (37:34):
I would just find something about somebody and cling to it,
you know what I mean, never let him forget it.
Speaker 4 (37:42):
Pedro's they're alive and well, man, are they really? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (37:46):
Tell me more about it. J C.
Speaker 4 (37:48):
Penny. I mean thirty bucks.
Speaker 5 (37:54):
Get a pair for thirty bucks in today's climate with
everything so expensive, and they got all sorts of I
mean they got baggy.
Speaker 4 (38:01):
Let me take a look baggy jeans, or get something.
Speaker 3 (38:03):
Let me get something from my son so I can
guarantee no one ever.
Speaker 5 (38:06):
Likes Look at what a zero that guy draw draw strings.
Speaker 2 (38:12):
We'll be back with your reaction beg.
Speaker 9 (38:22):
The Petrol Money Show podcasted at a M five seventy
l A.
Speaker 2 (38:27):
Sports.
Speaker 3 (38:27):
A big thank you to Gary Klein, who's a heck
(38:48):
of a guy, joining us from the La Times to
talk about Aaron Donald and his workouts.
Speaker 2 (38:55):
His curls, hammer curls, wide, arm curls.
Speaker 3 (38:59):
David Mass Hey, we'll join us in the very next
hour to talk about the upcoming All Star Game, and
then we'll have some grab ass, and then we'll have
Victor Ortiz bare knuckles fighting with Victor ortiv. We have
Libby and Zach.
Speaker 2 (39:17):
In fully functioned employe.
Speaker 3 (39:18):
At him, Ronnie Fossio in the house, a lot of
Arizona teams talks.
Speaker 2 (39:25):
You know.
Speaker 3 (39:25):
Jonas knots our dear friend is here on a five
seventy LA Sports Now. The All Star Game is in
moments about an hour out from the All Star Game
on Fox. I'm sure that they're livid that show Aotani
is not participating because of his left knee intervention. I
(39:46):
guess they're having a meeting with his knee and telling
the knee to stop being drunk by six o'clock every night.
Speaker 2 (39:51):
But it's a uh. I don't care about most things,
is you know.
Speaker 3 (39:58):
But one thing that's very hard for me to muster
up any kind of excitement about to do sports talk radio, even.
Speaker 2 (40:05):
What we like to call great sports talk.
Speaker 3 (40:07):
Radio, is baseball the All Star Game. Why or anybody's
all Star Game. Well, yeah, but just don't like I don't,
I don't. Yeah, but baseball, are you kind of like
watch this tonight?
Speaker 7 (40:19):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (40:19):
Man, Yeah, you're gonna make like really try to figure
this out and then go on two pros and a
cup of Joe and have like a hot take about
Schwarber or something like what what's gonna happen?
Speaker 5 (40:30):
Well, listen, my son is a baseball junkie, so I,
in turn am a baseball junkie. And I was showing
LeVar this, uh this morning on the show. So one
of the things that my son and I watch, if
you go on Instagram, you can see these guys repair
old baseball gloves. And I don't know why it's so fascinating.
Speaker 2 (40:49):
But we'll watch one thing to watch somebody repair a car.
Speaker 5 (40:53):
I don't know what it is like it will watch
it and it's just really interesting.
Speaker 3 (40:56):
They'll take these watching a guy like going like in
fast ocean, like cut down a yard.
Speaker 2 (41:03):
But we're gonna help out this old man.
Speaker 5 (41:04):
He's a veteran in his and so this guy will
you know, take some you know, Mizuno glove he pulled
out of a fire somewhere and and he'll just like,
cut all the laces off. He'll he'll polish it up
and he'll bring it back to life.
Speaker 4 (41:19):
So we're baseball junkies, all right.
Speaker 2 (41:22):
If you're watching somebody re restore a.
Speaker 5 (41:25):
Gloves or just no, just the just the mits. Yeah,
I don't know what it is, man, I'm fascinated by it.
Speaker 3 (41:34):
Well, I'm sorry, I'm taking you away from your son.
Knox is sitting in there. Knocks Knocks is sitting in
your house.
Speaker 2 (41:41):
I mean he does have.
Speaker 5 (41:43):
The double name, right, No he does not, but he
should l Knoxo. We'll lean into his Latin side. But yeah,
I just so I like the Baseball Star Game. I
also look around and.
Speaker 2 (41:57):
I interest you this year.
Speaker 5 (41:59):
It's the best all Star game period because it's the
one that you can most simulate in an exhibition fashion.
Like the Pro Bowl games are a joke. What they've
done when they took the Pro Bowl. We've talked about
this out of the Mecca that was a Loja stadium,
when they took the Pro Bowl away from there and
started moving it around from Orlando and all these other
(42:22):
places and last nobody.
Speaker 3 (42:24):
Cared about the Pro Bowl either, but you, because you're
a Hawaii.
Speaker 5 (42:27):
Okay, but there was something about seeing Chris Berman in
a Hawaiian shirt drinking a beer on the sideline.
Speaker 3 (42:33):
It was a different, more innocent time for ESPN. Now,
I go on to ESPN and I'm lucky if the
woman has hair. You turn on ESPN now and it's
like some bald head scallywag preaching at you, and it's
like I used to like. Look, I thought Rich Eisen
was a condescending douche, and so is Kenny Maine and stuff.
(42:54):
But at least they put together a show, you know,
I didn't have to feel like I was being preached to.
Speaker 5 (42:58):
I mean, the dunk contest is shell of itself. Okay,
the Pro Bowl games.
Speaker 3 (43:03):
I'm not interested in any of it, But I'm not
interested in the Baseball one either.
Speaker 5 (43:07):
But if you had to pick one, which sport all
star event would be the one.
Speaker 2 (43:12):
You'd go with, I guess Baseball.
Speaker 5 (43:14):
Yeah, it's the only one that you can replicate kind
of yeah, and it looks and it looks somewhat.
Speaker 3 (43:19):
But now that we're on the verge of all this
crazy labor strife and maybe that's why a lot of
the stars aren't playing, and the MLB's got the weird
commercials out about the salary cap.
Speaker 2 (43:30):
It's a little awkward, Yeah, a little awkward.
Speaker 4 (43:33):
Yeah. The vibe when the commissioner.
Speaker 3 (43:35):
Comes out to give somebody a trophy that by knock
the commissioners and clean off.
Speaker 4 (43:40):
Yeah, Bryce Arper and have got into it last week.
Speaker 2 (43:42):
His teeth out. You want that gap back, man, friend,
you son up a bit so you will be watching. Yeah,
I'll be.
Speaker 5 (43:49):
Watching, you know why not like you know, take take
it all. I also want and I want to ask.
Speaker 2 (43:54):
I used to try to care. I just can't. I
can't make myself care about.
Speaker 5 (43:59):
Much I want to ask. I want to ask a
vassa about this knuckles Yes, that's right, big.
Speaker 3 (44:06):
Bare Knuckles competition coming up this weekend at Novo Theater
balle Live Bitch.
Speaker 5 (44:11):
I mean I also I want to ask fast say
they talk about the All Star break, how much of
a break is it for the Because I look at it,
I go, if you're playing in the All Star Game,
so the game ends with your team on Sunday, then
you fly out to wherever the location is. You've got
Monday obligations, Tuesday obligations. Maybe you'll get back Wednesday Wednesday.
Speaker 4 (44:30):
And you started back up on front.
Speaker 3 (44:32):
They're going to New York. Maybe you meet the team
in New York if you're already out there.
Speaker 5 (44:36):
It just feels like for the guys that are going
to the All Star Game, it's kind of a maybe
a little bit of a disadvantage.
Speaker 2 (44:42):
You know.
Speaker 3 (44:42):
I guess at the All Star Game, you get to
take pictures, you get to say you're an All Star
in your Wikipedia for the rest of your life it
says you're playing on the All Star Games.
Speaker 5 (44:50):
Unless you're Zach Wheeler of the Phillies, who said he
was disrespected because he felt like he was the fifth option.
They came to him and he felt like he was
the fifth option, so he wasn't he's not counna partake
in the All Star Game.
Speaker 3 (45:02):
How about that they didn't ask him soon or noough,
I guess not. That sounds like he made plans have
to have been.
Speaker 5 (45:08):
But I'm gonna stand my ground, stand my ground. I've
got integrity and morals. I'm not gonna let that make
me the fifth option.
Speaker 3 (45:18):
Well, I'm sure somebody along with Jonas and his son
will be watching during the breaks. Don't forget to check
in on YouTube to watch a guy repair a glove.
Speaker 4 (45:31):
I think I would agree.
Speaker 3 (45:33):
I mean, I watch a lot of bodycam videos, a
lot of bodies. Oh yeah, yeah, people getting arrested. I
love watching body See that.
Speaker 4 (45:40):
One with Rassini, huh, tool can see. And then she's
on a Bahamas cruise with her husband and kids. Two
days later, the kid, big ass waving all around.
Speaker 7 (45:59):
I think I forgot it was on it.
