Well because I didn't even know if he meant to

and I was like, oh wow, that'ud be a good idea,
Like whatever it is. Somebody's idea was was heart knocks,
and we're just gonna roll with it. You think about
all the merchandise opportunities exactly.

I don't know about you. So the other night I
was it was last Friday.

And I'm doing KTLA and it was one of those
the scripts aren't quite ready, so just read whatever is
off the prompter type of thing. You know, occasionally have
one of those. And we had a lot of stories happening.
So I'm reading a story and as I'm reading it,
I almost wanted to stop, like, you know, this is
complete bs. It was a story that came out that

Rich Paul was getting text messages or voice messages, voice
notes from like every player, GM coach in the league.
And I'm thinking as I was reading this story, I
was thinking, like, well, as reported the other day here
at KTLA, and I'm like, you guys went with this story.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
You didn't.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Well, I wasn't here, because if I had been here,
there's no way you would have gone with the story.
Let's just think about this on the surface, Right, So
you're Rich Paul and you're getting a phone call from
one of the GM's in the NBA. You're gonna let
it go to voicemail, Like, really, what are we talking
about right now? I mean, this is everything that has
(03:09):
been talked about in terms of Lebron James leading the Lakers,
the circumstances leaving the Lakers. Remember how long did it
take for the Lakers upon you know, Lebron saying, you know,
I'm just gonna test the free agent market and you know, no, no,
thank you.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
How long did it take for them to rebuild that roster?
Like twelve hours? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (03:30):
And look, you can debate whether or not they're in
a better spot now than they would have been before.
The point is they're in the spot that they wanted
to be in. They wanted out of the Lebron business.
And since then there's been this concerted effort, this over
the top effort from all of the the ball washing
Lebron fanboys and fangirls out there to try and get

his side of the story out. And I'm just tired
of it. I'm so fed up with it, dude. We
don't need a whiteboard breakdown as you sift through all
of the possibilities and pros and cons of what's gonna
you know, what's gonna make the most sense to you.
We don't need to hear more crap about how old
that there's seventy six ers there. Trio Embiid and Maxie
(04:15):
and Jayalen Brown have all reached out to Lebron.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
This Maxie represented by that would be Clutch Sports. So
the idea that that Maxie has talked about, you know,
Lebron has been like a big brother to me.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Blah blah blah blah blah.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
I mean he is being all of this is being
orchestrated by Lebron everything, you know. And if Rich Paul
wants to continue to be dating Adele and live the
great life that he has lived as a guy that
latched on to Lebron all those years ago and being
very loyal to Lebron.

He's gonna do what he's taught to do.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
You meaning to tell me that Rich Paul couldn't have
landed Adele if he didn't have some sort of a
relationship with Lebron.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
Gam No, that would not happen at all. So, I mean,
here's the bottom line.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
I'd love just know the second Apron, Steve.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
Okay, they are trying desperately. And remember when when Lebron.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Was out with Sciatica at the start of the year,
and what was happening was they were trying to get
a deal done with one of two teams, either the
Calves or the Knicks. Those were the and neither team
was interested. They're just like, no, no, no, no, no,
we're not doing any signing, you know, no, no, we're
not making a trade. And so all of a sudden,
the Sciatica subsided and Lebron played out the season.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Look, there's only.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
One team in play here, it's the Cleveland Cavaliers, and
he's trying to figure out because again, everything has got
to be scripted to.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
The way Lebron wants it.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
He wants to wrap up his career with the Cavaliers,
and of course the Cavaliers are like, dude, you left
us twice, Yes, twice, you voluntarily ditched us to go
elsewhere where you felt it was a better situation for you,
first of Miami and then to LA And so now
a team that blew out Detroit by thirty points on
(05:49):
the road in that playoff series, you get to the
Eastern Conference finals.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
They have this young nucleus of players. We're going to
disrupt everything for you.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
Two oh and you also won Brownie on the team
as well. And so all of this talk about Philly
and Miami and gold and said, none of.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
This is real.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
There's one team and they're trying to lean on Cleveland
to somehow, some way forget the fact that he walked
away from you twice. It's only right that the king
self proclaimed should wrap up his career in a Cavaliers unit.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
There's also the element of we've been down this road
so many times. It's just kind of like, okay, so
he signs it, Like when he does eventually sign, I'm
with you. When he eventually does sign with the Cavaliers,
I hope that he realizes it's not going to have
the same effect that the previous times that he left
(06:46):
to go somewhere else have had. When he left to
go to Miami, that was a big, big production, and
you know, he got a lot of blowback for it,
and he got a lot of heat for it, and ultimately,
you know, probably you know, maybe you know, need a
little bit of a duo over the way the whole
thing was handled. And then he left Miami and he
went back to Cleveland and it was really celebrated, like, okay,
now all is right with the world. Lebron is back.
(07:09):
And then he went to La it's kind of all right, cool,
and he's never going to be Kobe out here. They're
never going to like him like Kobe. But and now
we're finding ourselves in this spot again, and while I
appreciate it, it gets us something to talk about, you know,
for a segment and a half, you know, during the
slow time of the sports calendar. I don't think that

he has totally fully comprehended the fact that it's not
going to land the same as he thinks it's going
to land, which is why when they come out with
all of these different stories and it's like Byron Scott
comes out on his podcast. He says, man, you know,
ten years ago teams are reaching out to Lebron. Ten
years later, now Lebron and Rich Paul are reaching out
(07:51):
to teams. The game has changed. And so when you
see these different stories that come out to where Byron
Scott has that report and then this one comes out
of the Sixers reaching out in their campaigning to bring
Lebron James in, dude, just pick a team, like that's
all anybody wants.

Nobody's reaching out.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
This is pure fabricationage and so it is complete.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
Look, no one sits on the fence with Lebron James.
Whatever you think.

Of Lebron James, you made up your mind a long
time ago, whether you think he's the greatest of all time,
whether he couldn't hold Michael Jordan's jockstrap. I see Charles
Barkley picked him seventh on his all time list. He said, hey,
he's in my top ten, had him seventh on his list. Okay,
so he had Oscar Robertson by the way too, behind Jordan,
he had Chamberlain three. I mean it was you know,

Charles was all over the place, by the way. He
had Magic and Bird eight and nine. Oh yeah, and
then he said it's my top ten and he actually
had eleven names. So Charles ken't even kenn even count
he had eleven names.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
I go counted. I mean names.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
That's not a top ten anyway.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
Look, everything that Lebron does is very orchestrated.

This is just how he is wound.

There's nothing I can say bad about Lebron James the person.

No, But by all accounts, he's been a good family man.
You know, I haven't heard any real scandal when it
comes to his family. You know what he did for Brony, Fine,
if you're in a position to do that for your son,
why not not everybody can obviously pull that, But he did,
and that's fine, you know problem, it's you know, it's

not gonna hurt anybody by having some kids sit at
the end of the bench. Fine, you give him an opportunity,
and you have this opportunity to play with your son
and make NBA history and all that. And there's certainly
a lot of arguments about Lebron James. Here's one of
my arguments when I support Lebron James, Well, Jordan was
six for six. Okay, he was also zero for eight
in the other fourteen probably fourteen years he did. He
(09:52):
didn't win a champion until we even get to the finals,
still his seventh year. But in all six of the
NBA finals that Jordan plays, they were favored in all six.
In the ten finals that Lebron was in, only three
times was his team favored, and he won four. It's
only three times were his teams either the Cavs, the Heat,

or the Lakers favored. Lakers obviously were in the NBA
finals as far as going into the NBA finals, and
he won four even though his team was only favored
three times.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
I'm a little surprised, I'll be honest with you. This
is kind of a stunning development here on the show.
Steve Hartman, who's a numbers guy, would credit Lebron James
with four NBA titles when everybody knows that that twenty
twenty championship was three and a half.

Oh wait a second, hold on us.

I mean, Steve, okay, there was a lot of things
working in their favorites.
Speaker 2 (10:45):

I mean, like, if you're you're a numbers guy, I
think we got to get to the specifics here.

I look at the all time roster at champions right now?
Does it do you have to hold your nose a
little bit?

Yeah, you most definitely do.

That would be familiar with this. There's a box score
and then there's a knock score.

Do you have to hold your nose more on that?
Than the Astros winning the series in twenty seventeen? Are
they comparable?

I just think that at least that was an actual
baseball game that was being played as opposed to asas
to I'm with you, but as opposed to you're playing
a game at Epcot Center, and they were the only
team I get it that really was playing for anyone.

You know, Kobe had been.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
Killed the Lakers, and Lebron realized he sees an opportunity.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
He knew it.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
Remember, they had missed the playoffs six raight years, including
Lebron's first year the year before. So from six straight
years to missing the playoffs and they were playing as
a good team.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Could they have won the championship that year? Absolutely? They
could have won the championship.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
Did they get a break by resting Lebron and ad
for three months?
Speaker 5 (11:49):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (11:49):
Definitely they did well.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
Once they got to the bubble, most most players couldn't
get out of that place fast enough.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Look, Lou Williams is so horned up. The guy you know,
traded in, you know, a playoff run for some wings
and some ass like that, Like I get it, okay,
So throw that one.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
Out of the nine championships, he was only favored in
two of them.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
I say this and one three with all respect because
he's one of the all time great players. Whatever list,
Charles Barkley, whoever has, he's one of the all time
great players. He's been been tremendous. And look, he deserves
all the credit for living up to and exceeding the
hype that was before him before he got anywhere close.
But when you choose to be the mercenary that you are,
(12:31):
don't come back around years later and be like, well,
why don't you guys think it's that big of a deal. Well,
because we've been down this road three or four times.
It's like Kevin Durant. Kevin Durant chose that path too.
And I would ask you, when Kevin Durant goes into
the Hall of Fame, what does he remembered, as I
don't know.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
As a guy that hits his wagon. So the Warriors
are two years and won a championship.
Speaker 3 (12:52):
Yeah, I mean, I don't know. I don't know what
team it is. When Lebron goes to the Hall of Fame,
what team are you gonna remember him by? I guess
the Cats?
Speaker 1 (13:00):
Okay, are you going to put a statue of him
outside of the crypt?
Speaker 3 (13:03):
And here's the thing. He spent a longer tenure with
the Lakers, and he had any other point in a
continuous career, continuous time with one organization, the longest was
with the Lakers. So what are we doing putting it
up next to Oscar dal la Hoya's statue?
Speaker 1 (13:18):
Like, but you know what the Lakers did not allow
him to do is have a farewell tour in the
Laker uniform, because you know that's what He's not gonna
just walk away.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
He saw Kareem get the rock and chair.
Speaker 1 (13:28):
He's seen all the legends, you know, basically get that
sendoff tour. You don't think that that's part of his
negotiation with the Calves and the Caves are like, we're
in the business of winning an NBA championship. We have
a young core of players. We were in the Eastern
Conference finals last year. It's not like we're some also ran.
I mean, we were trying to win a championship. We're
going to take a year off for you to have
a farewell tour.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
It's just it's the whole decision, the whole Lebron watch
on free agency. Look, of course we're going to discuss it.
We're going to talk about it. He's an all time
great player who's looking at where he wants to finish
his career up. But it's just not the same that
it was. And I feel like the first time around
he made the decision that was something when he decided
(14:12):
to come back, And if I'm not mistaken, the way
that he announced his decision to go back to Cleveland
was in Sports Illustrated. Wasn't there like a deep, one
dive article done in Sports Illustrated. I remember being at
Fox Sports Radio when that broke because the show that
I was on had just ended and that story came out,
and so there was that, and then he goes to
(14:32):
the Lakers and it just didn't feel quite the same.
And this one just feels like, all right, man, Like
we went from mortar bombs and Piccolo Pete's and now
somebody's holding up you know, a sparkler and it's winding
down on the fourth of July. So what are we doing?
Speaker 2 (14:51):
Well? I know this, the Lakers have moved on. That
is clear.
Speaker 1 (14:54):
In fact, coming up on the other side, we're gonna
check in with Dan Woiki. He's gonna tell us a
little bit about I don't know, maybe he's got some
insight on where Lebron will end up. Like I said,
it's either either the Cavaliers or it's a retirement for
the guy who can't get a deal done.

we can talk about anything with the Lakers. Where where
do you guys? When I go, Well, I know America
America's favorite news making machine.
Speaker 3 (17:23):
I mean, I know you personally would like to talk
about Miguel Vargas hitting that bomb in the game.
Speaker 5 (17:29):
I actually would, I actually would really like to talk
about it. It was awesome. He is fastly becoming one
of my favorite baseball players.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
Obleski was striking out everybody until that that was a
tank to like.
Speaker 5 (17:42):
He got get out of outed. You know, they they
probably you know, had some good nights in Oklahoma City together,
you know, like you probably knew that Slider was going
to hang.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
So Dan, uh, how many teams? Let's all just cut
the crap here, because how many teams are actually in
on the lebron quote unquote sweep steakes? Like, what are
you hearing that? The teams that are realistic as opposed
to all the other rumors and headlines that are out there.
Speaker 5 (18:13):
This is a tricky question, and it's going to sound
like I'm evading it, but I think no one really
knows is the biggest thing. So I spoke to a
coach of one of these, like, you know, the teams
that everybody's mentioning, right, one of the five, the Warriors,
the heat I don't want to leave one out for
fear of being aggregated. Who else you're talking about here?
(18:36):
The Sixers, the Calves, we're missing one Minnesota, right. I
spoke to one of these coaches, and that coach told me,
I think we have a four percent chance of getting him,
But if it makes sense, I believe we have every
bit of that four percent. That doesn't make a ton
of sense. It is kind of like very much like
a ninety percent of the time it works on und
(18:56):
percent of the time type of thinking. I just think
that no one really knows anything, and that a lot
of the reporting that's happening is just echoes of people
who have informed opinions about like what would make sense.
So if you ask me which two teams made the
most sense, I would tell you that it's or which
(19:17):
teams made the most sense for Lebron James based on
what I know and based on the person I know,
I would tell you that it's Cleveland and Golden State.
I think everything else feels like a little more distant
because it doesn't have any real direct personal connection to him,
and I know he played in Miami. But I said
(19:37):
what I said, I think it just does. It feels different.
But that's not to say. Look, he may look at
Minnesota and say this is the best place for me
to play basketball, that their need at starting power forward
most aligns with my abilities today, and this gives me
the best chance to win an NBA championship. You may
(19:57):
look at that, he could look similar lead to Miami
and say, you know, this type of star power in
the front quart is precisely what I'm looking for, or
Philadelphia or whatever. But I think the arguments are cleanest
for Golden State in Cleveland. For Golden State, it's to
go play with your friends, simple, right. These are people
who knows. These are people who's competed against with for
(20:18):
fifteen plus years. Every day of the league gets younger
and he gets older, and these are his contemporaries, and
it would be a lot of fun for him to
do that. I think the argument for Cleveland is that it's,
you know, in addition to being home, more importantly, it's
the one place where he could go where the landing
is guaranteed to stick no matter what.
Speaker 1 (20:40):
Yeah, you know, Dan, The first time I ever heard
the name of Lebron James, my dear friend Sonny Vaccaro
was on my show This is like ninety nine, two thousand,
way back in the day, and I asked him, I say,
who's the best high school player in the country. He goes,
the best high school player in the country is a
ninth grade kid out of Akron, Ohio's name is James.
(21:01):
That's when Sonny first saw him play.
Speaker 5 (21:04):
Sonny was on this one earlier.
Speaker 2 (21:06):
Yeah, And so.
Speaker 1 (21:09):
From that point on, Lebron's always been the man on
every team that he's ever played, and this past year
we saw for the first time where he wasn't the man. Obviously,
it's Luca's team right now, I'm just curious that. Okay,
he accepted that role. But then he got the opportunity
in the playoffs, certainly in that Houston series with ar
and Luca out to once again assume control of the team,
(21:32):
and it worked out pretty well for the Lakers as
they got through that series. But if you're talking about
any of these teams, you know, especially when you talk
about the Sixers or you're talking about the Cavaliers who
were in the Eastern Conference finals, these are teams that
pretty much have the pieces in place. And do you
believe that if Lebron joined a team like that that
(21:53):
he would just be a smooth fit or just by
his nature would be an instant disruptor to any of
those type team.
Speaker 5 (22:01):
I mean, I think on the court, the answer is yes,
he can fit in almost anything, right. He's such a
well rounded player. He is such a smart player that
he can bend his skills to do, you know, functionally
whatever on the best wall court. I think off the court, certainly, No,
I mean it's not easy being around Lebron James. And
(22:23):
some of it is you know, his and his team's doing,
and some of it is just the fact that he's
Lebron James, right, and that you know, on a night
where let's just say you're in Minnesota, right, and on
a night where the Melo ball, you know, scores thirty
ten and has ten and ten and should be the story,
but Lebron, you know, becomes the oldest player ever to
(22:44):
have a double double, the Melo ball is going to
answer questions by Lebron James. It's just like, this is
just kind of how it goes. And that's not to
say that, you know, guys aren't cool at this and
it's like a full on distraction guys that you used
talking about other players and stuff like that. But I
think Lebron is different. You know, no one's been dissecting
more written about more there's been no more, you know,
(23:07):
a bloc conversations on talk shows. You know, you have
to hear about reckless speculation about the players he wants
to play with, and you know, implicit power that that
he has to build the rosters around him. It can
be a lot, and I think, you know, not every
ecosystem in the NBA is sort of built for that.
(23:28):
I think, you know the ones that are still in
play here. I mean, like Golden State has handled plenty
of ego, plenty of drama, right like Old had for them.
You know, I think Philadelphia is interesting on that front,
right Like, this isn't the most patient I said this
(23:49):
lovingly to people, the people of Philadelphia not the most
patient group of fans in America, you know. And they're
going to be integrating a new piece in Jaylen Brown already,
so you're gonna be adding a second one in that
facun be difficult. You know, the big changes that are
happening in Miami already, plenty of drama there, you know.
I think Cleveland to a degree is used to it.
(24:11):
Golden State again to a degree, is used to it.
These feel like the places that are most equipped for it.
But look, I mean I think, I think, yeah, it
can be a headache, but it's like always worth it,
Like he's always been worth it as a player, and
I think he's still going to be worth it, And
it's never really been particularly close.

to seventy. Now, what would it have taken for Lebron
to remain with the Lakers, Like, what sort of a deal,
what sort of a concession? What would have needed to

happen for him to remain with the Lakers as opposed
to finding himself in this spot yet again where he's
trying to find another team to end his career with.
Speaker 5 (25:06):
I think like a pretty big shift in Laker philosophy honestly, right,
that this was a team that was really committed to
building a roster and using its cap space to build
a roster that best fits and suits what Lukadatri like
wants and needs to succeed. And you know, like that's
(25:32):
that that player is not in the mix for this.
Like you know, when I say that player Lebron James,
like he doesn't that's not that's not a part of
the recipe. And that's not it, I mean, which is
confusing because he's also settle things to be a part
of all recipes. Right, But like the Lakers were very
committed and the minute they did to Lucado should we're
(25:52):
very committed to going down this road, you know, aggressively
acquiring a center, aggressively adding a stretch five a stress
stretch for you know, adding more shooting and methodice on
the wing, and like, yeah, maybe if there was stuff
left over, I think like they could have circled back,
but there was you know, the plan was to not
have anything left over.

So Dan jokes aside about the snow Time Lakers and
the Cream team. When you look at their roster, the
core of their roster right now, and obviously I'll take
an account that guys stay on the court, stay healthy.

How good of a team is this?
Speaker 1 (26:29):
I mean, we saw a fifty win team before. Or
is this a better roster now than they were a
year ago?
Speaker 5 (26:37):
Well, I mean I think right if they thought so.
To answer your question, I believe it is a It
is a better team because it gets them closer to
like what you need to do to win in the
NBA right now and the way you can win in
the NBA because you have a great player and then
you put all your resources into maximizing that great player
(26:58):
strengths and minimizing that players weaknesses. Simple, right, Like, I mean,
it's hard to do, but I mean, this is this
is what the Knicks did. This is what the Spurs
are trying to do around Victim Wimenyama. This is what
the Celtics have done. Like you find you have your greatness,
you you hide as many of the weaknesses as you
(27:18):
can with your sporting players, and then you you maximize
the gifts that your star has. I think that this
Lakers team will have better shooting, it has better depth.
I think that it's younger, so it'll be more dynamic,
more athletic. I do think that, you know, there's still
(27:39):
real work to be done on you know, it does
need more defense, it needs more particularly point of attack defense.
It does need a little more size. I think there
are questions at backup center, and then obviously right like
I mean, we say put aside the questions of health.
You know, the three most important players in this team,
two of them weren't helping the playoffs last year, one
(28:01):
didn't play in the playoffs, and Luka Doncic and you know,
Walker Tesla played five games last year due to a
shoulder surgery. So, like, those guys all have to be healthy.
But I think the roster is like built better for that, right,
Like that's where a player like Colin Sexton helps, you know,
Colin Sexton, a huge part of what he's going to
be asked to do is to get help get the
(28:22):
Lakers through eighty two games, you know, as a as
a scorer, as a guy can who can take some
of the pressure off of you know, dodge and rees,
particularly when one of those guys is out with an
ankle or a sore calf or something like that. So
I think they're closer to being like the best possible
version of a Lukadovic team, even if maybe they don't
(28:45):
have as much talent, which I you know, certainly on
the top they don't. But they took that you know,
fifty three million dollars you know from Lebron James and
carved it up into three different players.
Speaker 3 (28:55):
It's also You're not going to fix it all in
one offseason, right of course. So like it's like everyone
just expected like, well, you know, they're trading out what
they had with Lebron for this. I mean, we need
more than that. It's well, you can't get it all
done in one offseason.
Speaker 5 (29:08):
It's gonna s So I think it's yeah, I think
it's realistically like probably like a three transaction cycle process, right, Like,
I franc hate this. I had a discussion with one
and the Thomas and a center you know VI the
other day about this any kind of role design that
I said, Look, I mean, this is the reality of it,
right is that Like now where it gets tricky for
the Lakers is that, you know, do they have the
(29:30):
ammunition you know today and at the trade deadline and
as they move you know, a year from now and
next sumerd to like to go from being like, you know,
I think they're going to be a really good basketball team,
right Like if alseholds like they should be a you know,
a top three offensive basketball team, and I trust this
coaching staff to have the defense be good enough, right
(29:52):
you know, certainly at least through the regular season, and
you know that should put you in a good position
in the West. This is a coaching staff that they
they bested their you know preseason, you know over under
win totals with each of the last two seasons with
imperfect rosters. This is a roster that's much more tailored
to what they're going to try to do, right, Like,
there's gonna be less less squinting and moving people into
(30:15):
roles they're not accustomed to that. All being said, like,
you know, they have one first round pick swap and
they have three second round picks to trade today, right,
And you know, if you want to say that those
three second round picks can be ear marked to like
help you get a starting power forward with an outgoing contract,
(30:35):
then you just have a pick swap to address whatever
else you need to address. So that's if Cavan Lodi
can't stay healthy and you need a backup center, you've
got a pick swap to do it. Even worse, if
Walker Kessel hurt and you need a starting level center.
You just don't have the ability to fix these things.
And I think if I were a pessimist, that'd be

the thing that makes the most nervous about this plan.
It's just like the last of outs like they're just
aren't any.

In a video posted to Instagram on Monday, he promoted

long ago where Ricky Rowe was trying to get a
tractor on Blue Chips and they almost had him thrown
out of the movie. Yes, this guy's got a full

Nil Man.

And that's that's one of the problems here, is that
these sponsors that are rolling out the money for these
nil deals and getting in bed with these you know,
these universities. And I'm believing it's a it's a give
and take on both sides, but you better deliver, right,
I mean, the pressure on this kid to actually be

some now if he turns out to be a star,
then they get their money's worth. But if it goes
like Spencer Rattler where he ended up getting benched for
a freshman named Caleb Williams and all of a sudden
you got this advertising going on with him at two
car dealerships in Oklahoma.

It was a tough situation.

Yeah, And you also wonder if you're the company now
you're following along, going are we getting what we're paying for?
Exactly the point and and so then the pressure is
felt from and that's why whenever you hear these complaints
with the nil era here, whenever you hear these complaints
from you know, kids or you know people telling you know,
they're just kids, you know, all the pressure they feel,

and the pressure is money. Well, that's what comes with
this man. That's why professionals have dealt dealt with their
entire life. And that's that's that's part of the deal.
When you sign that big contract, when you get that
big sponsorship, you better deliver or else people are going
to get on you about it. And so the fact
that he's partnered up and he's got this thing going,
it's just it's it's wild to think that it wasn't

that long We were actually talking about this on the
show this morning with with Brady and LeVar. If you
go back to the Jim Tressel Ohio State tattoo stuff
and go back and look at what the crime actually
wants to where they were trading Ohio State memorabilia for
discounts on tattoos. Jim Tressel never coached again, never coached again,

and these were like one of the most successful coaches
at one of the most successful programs in the.

History of the sports Michigan.

Every year he went, he went to Indianapolis, was a
consultant with the Colts, was part of like game day
review operations, and still had to serve a six game suspension.
He wasn't even eligible to work for the Colts next
year till week seven. And this guy's getting a car sponsorship.
What's happening now? It's just it's crazy. It wasn't that

You know, you talk about the responsibilities of being a
professional athlete or just a professional in general. You and
I have sponsors, We have sponsors forever. I mean, we
have to be able to deliver listeners. They got to
see some return on their investment that people are listening
to you and that you have a way to sell
them to use your one of my all time favorites

here Back in the early days of six ninety Jonas,
So we had we we pretty much had everything thrown
at us as we're trying to get everything going, and
we had a sales guy not making this up.

He comes to me, goes, Hartman, I got one for you.
I go, what is it? Foreskin replacement? I'm like, what hey?
He goes so good? And so I'm reading the copy.
It says, was.

Something taken away from you before you had to say

into the ring and on their shore. So it would

But at that point you're looking for whatever money you

can make, Like you're like you're trying to partner up
with whoever you if somebody is going to give you
money to going there and make make it easier to live,
but you'll say yes to it in a lot of
in a lot of ways.

See so different now because if you're if you're getting
that nil money, you got to produce on social media,
you know, your Instagram or whatever it is. You got
to be doing content constantly and ring up as many
followers as you possibly can. That's how you sell to yourself.
I mean those were early on with the nil deals.

The gymnast that is Paul Skeene's girl. She did it
because she had a huge following on social media.

And so that's that's the other pressure.

So along with you know, learning the playbook or playing
the game at a high level, whatever your sport may be,
you've got to be dynamite on social media to justify
these huge nil deals they're making.

So I'm reading a story and as I'm reading it,
I almost wanted to stop, like, you know, this is
complete bs. It was a story that came out that

Rich Paul was getting text messages or voice messages, voice
notes from like every player, GM coach in the league.
And I'm thinking as I was reading this story, I
was thinking, like, well, as reported the other day here
at KTLA, and I'm like, you guys went with this story.

You didn't.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Well, I wasn't here, because if I had been here,
there's no way you would have gone with the story.
Let's just think about this on the surface, Right, So
you're Rich Paul and you're getting a phone call from
one of the GM's in the NBA. You're gonna let
it go to voicemail, Like, really, what are we talking
about right now? I mean, this is everything that has
(03:09):
been talked about in terms of Lebron James leading the Lakers,
the circumstances leaving the Lakers. Remember how long did it
take for the Lakers upon you know, Lebron saying, you know,
I'm just gonna test the free agent market and you know, no, no,
thank you.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
How long did it take for them to rebuild that roster?
Like twelve hours? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (03:30):
And look, you can debate whether or not they're in
a better spot now than they would have been before.
The point is they're in the spot that they wanted
to be in. They wanted out of the Lebron business.
And since then there's been this concerted effort, this over
the top effort from all of the the ball washing
Lebron fanboys and fangirls out there to try and get

his side of the story out. And I'm just tired
of it. I'm so fed up with it, dude. We
don't need a whiteboard breakdown as you sift through all
of the possibilities and pros and cons of what's gonna
you know, what's gonna make the most sense to you.
We don't need to hear more crap about how old
that there's seventy six ers there. Trio Embiid and Maxie
(04:15):
and Jayalen Brown have all reached out to Lebron.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
This Maxie represented by that would be Clutch Sports. So
the idea that that Maxie has talked about, you know,
Lebron has been like a big brother to me.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Blah blah blah blah blah.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
I mean he is being all of this is being
orchestrated by Lebron everything, you know. And if Rich Paul
wants to continue to be dating Adele and live the
great life that he has lived as a guy that
latched on to Lebron all those years ago and being
very loyal to Lebron.

He's gonna do what he's taught to do.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
You meaning to tell me that Rich Paul couldn't have
landed Adele if he didn't have some sort of a
relationship with Lebron.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
Gam No, that would not happen at all. So, I mean,
here's the bottom line.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
I'd love just know the second Apron, Steve.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
Okay, they are trying desperately. And remember when when Lebron.

Was out with Sciatica at the start of the year,
and what was happening was they were trying to get
a deal done with one of two teams, either the
Calves or the Knicks. Those were the and neither team
was interested. They're just like, no, no, no, no, no,
we're not doing any signing, you know, no, no, we're
not making a trade. And so all of a sudden,
the Sciatica subsided and Lebron played out the season.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Look, there's only.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
One team in play here, it's the Cleveland Cavaliers, and
he's trying to figure out because again, everything has got
to be scripted to.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
The way Lebron wants it.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
He wants to wrap up his career with the Cavaliers,
and of course the Cavaliers are like, dude, you left
us twice, Yes, twice, you voluntarily ditched us to go
elsewhere where you felt it was a better situation for you,
first of Miami and then to LA And so now
a team that blew out Detroit by thirty points on
(05:49):
the road in that playoff series, you get to the
Eastern Conference finals.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
They have this young nucleus of players. We're going to
disrupt everything for you.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
Two oh and you also won Brownie on the team
as well. And so all of this talk about Philly
and Miami and gold and said, none of.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
This is real.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
There's one team and they're trying to lean on Cleveland
to somehow, some way forget the fact that he walked
away from you twice. It's only right that the king
self proclaimed should wrap up his career in a Cavaliers unit.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
There's also the element of we've been down this road
so many times. It's just kind of like, okay, so
he signs it, Like when he does eventually sign, I'm
with you. When he eventually does sign with the Cavaliers,
I hope that he realizes it's not going to have
the same effect that the previous times that he left
(06:46):
to go somewhere else have had. When he left to
go to Miami, that was a big, big production, and
you know, he got a lot of blowback for it,
and he got a lot of heat for it, and ultimately,
you know, probably you know, maybe you know, need a
little bit of a duo over the way the whole
thing was handled. And then he left Miami and he
went back to Cleveland and it was really celebrated, like, okay,
now all is right with the world. Lebron is back.
(07:09):
And then he went to La it's kind of all right, cool,
and he's never going to be Kobe out here. They're
never going to like him like Kobe. But and now
we're finding ourselves in this spot again, and while I
appreciate it, it gets us something to talk about, you know,
for a segment and a half, you know, during the
slow time of the sports calendar. I don't think that

he has totally fully comprehended the fact that it's not
going to land the same as he thinks it's going
to land, which is why when they come out with
all of these different stories and it's like Byron Scott
comes out on his podcast. He says, man, you know,
ten years ago teams are reaching out to Lebron. Ten
years later, now Lebron and Rich Paul are reaching out
(07:51):
to teams. The game has changed. And so when you
see these different stories that come out to where Byron
Scott has that report and then this one comes out
of the Sixers reaching out in their campaigning to bring
Lebron James in, dude, just pick a team, like that's
all anybody wants.

This is pure fabricationage and so it is complete.

Look, no one sits on the fence with Lebron James.

time ago, whether you think he's the greatest of all time,

Barkley picked him seventh on his all time list. He said, hey,

so he had Oscar Robertson by the way too, behind Jordan,
he had Chamberlain three. I mean it was you know,

Charles was all over the place, by the way. He
had Magic and Bird eight and nine. Oh yeah, and
then he said it's my top ten and he actually
had eleven names. So Charles ken't even kenn even count
he had eleven names.

Look, everything that Lebron does is very orchestrated.

No, But by all accounts, he's been a good family man.
You know, I haven't heard any real scandal when it
comes to his family. You know what he did for Brony, Fine,
if you're in a position to do that for your son,
why not not everybody can obviously pull that, But he did,
and that's fine, you know problem, it's you know, it's

not gonna hurt anybody by having some kids sit at
the end of the bench. Fine, you give him an opportunity,
and you have this opportunity to play with your son
and make NBA history and all that. And there's certainly
a lot of arguments about Lebron James. Here's one of
my arguments when I support Lebron James, Well, Jordan was
six for six. Okay, he was also zero for eight
in the other fourteen probably fourteen years he did. He

didn't win a champion until we even get to the finals,
still his seventh year. But in all six of the
NBA finals that Jordan plays, they were favored in all six.
In the ten finals that Lebron was in, only three
times was his team favored, and he won four. It's
only three times were his teams either the Cavs, the Heat,
(10:14):
or the Lakers favored. Lakers obviously were in the NBA
finals as far as going into the NBA finals, and
he won four even though his team was only favored
three times.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
I'm a little surprised, I'll be honest with you. This
is kind of a stunning development here on the show.
Steve Hartman, who's a numbers guy, would credit Lebron James
with four NBA titles when everybody knows that that twenty
twenty championship was three and a half.

I mean, Steve, okay, there was a lot of things
working in their favorites.

Does it do you have to hold your nose a

and then there's a knock score.

Than the Astros winning the series in twenty seventeen? Are
they comparable?

I just think that at least that was an actual
baseball game that was being played as opposed to asas
to I'm with you, but as opposed to you're playing
a game at Epcot Center, and they were the only
team I get it that really was playing for anyone.

You know, Kobe had been.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
Killed the Lakers, and Lebron realized he sees an opportunity.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
He knew it.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
Remember, they had missed the playoffs six raight years, including
Lebron's first year the year before. So from six straight
years to missing the playoffs and they were playing as
a good team.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Could they have won the championship that year? Absolutely? They
could have won the championship.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
Did they get a break by resting Lebron and ad
for three months?
Speaker 5 (11:49):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (11:49):
Definitely they did well.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
Once they got to the bubble, most most players couldn't
get out of that place fast enough.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Look, Lou Williams is so horned up. The guy you know,
traded in, you know, a playoff run for some wings
and some ass like that, Like I get it, okay,
So throw that one.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
Out of the nine championships, he was only favored in
two of them.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
I say this and one three with all respect because
he's one of the all time great players. Whatever list,
Charles Barkley, whoever has, he's one of the all time
great players. He's been been tremendous. And look, he deserves
all the credit for living up to and exceeding the
hype that was before him before he got anywhere close.
But when you choose to be the mercenary that you are,
(12:31):
don't come back around years later and be like, well,
why don't you guys think it's that big of a deal. Well,
because we've been down this road three or four times.
It's like Kevin Durant. Kevin Durant chose that path too.
And I would ask you, when Kevin Durant goes into
the Hall of Fame, what does he remembered, as I
don't know.

As a guy that hits his wagon. So the Warriors
are two years and won a championship.
Speaker 3 (12:52):
Yeah, I mean, I don't know. I don't know what
team it is. When Lebron goes to the Hall of Fame,
what team are you gonna remember him by? I guess
the Cats?
Speaker 1 (13:00):
Okay, are you going to put a statue of him
outside of the crypt?
Speaker 3 (13:03):
And here's the thing. He spent a longer tenure with
the Lakers, and he had any other point in a
continuous career, continuous time with one organization, the longest was
with the Lakers. So what are we doing putting it
up next to Oscar dal la Hoya's statue?
Speaker 1 (13:18):
Like, but you know what the Lakers did not allow
him to do is have a farewell tour in the
Laker uniform, because you know that's what He's not gonna
just walk away.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
He saw Kareem get the rock and chair.
Speaker 1 (13:28):
He's seen all the legends, you know, basically get that
sendoff tour. You don't think that that's part of his
negotiation with the Calves and the Caves are like, we're
in the business of winning an NBA championship. We have
a young core of players. We were in the Eastern
Conference finals last year. It's not like we're some also ran.
I mean, we were trying to win a championship. We're
going to take a year off for you to have
a farewell tour.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
It's just it's the whole decision, the whole Lebron watch
on free agency. Look, of course we're going to discuss it.
We're going to talk about it. He's an all time
great player who's looking at where he wants to finish
his career up. But it's just not the same that
it was. And I feel like the first time around
he made the decision that was something when he decided

to come back, And if I'm not mistaken, the way
that he announced his decision to go back to Cleveland
was in Sports Illustrated. Wasn't there like a deep, one
dive article done in Sports Illustrated. I remember being at
Fox Sports Radio when that broke because the show that
I was on had just ended and that story came out,
and so there was that, and then he goes to

the Lakers and it just didn't feel quite the same.
And this one just feels like, all right, man, Like
we went from mortar bombs and Piccolo Pete's and now
somebody's holding up you know, a sparkler and it's winding
down on the fourth of July. So what are we doing?

Well? I know this, the Lakers have moved on. That
is clear.
Speaker 1 (14:54):
In fact, coming up on the other side, we're gonna

we can talk about anything with the Lakers. Where where
do you guys? When I go, Well, I know America
America's favorite news making machine.
Speaker 3 (17:23):
I mean, I know you personally would like to talk
about Miguel Vargas hitting that bomb in the game.
Speaker 5 (17:29):
I actually would, I actually would really like to talk
about it. It was awesome. He is fastly becoming one
of my favorite baseball players.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
Obleski was striking out everybody until that that was a
tank to like.
Speaker 5 (17:42):
He got get out of outed. You know, they they
probably you know, had some good nights in Oklahoma City together,
you know, like you probably knew that Slider was going
to hang.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
So Dan, uh, how many teams? Let's all just cut
the crap here, because how many teams are actually in
on the lebron quote unquote sweep steakes? Like, what are
you hearing that? The teams that are realistic as opposed
to all the other rumors and headlines that are out there.
Speaker 5 (18:13):
This is a tricky question, and it's going to sound
like I'm evading it, but I think no one really
knows is the biggest thing. So I spoke to a
coach of one of these, like, you know, the teams
that everybody's mentioning, right, one of the five, the Warriors,
the heat I don't want to leave one out for
fear of being aggregated. Who else you're talking about here?
(18:36):
The Sixers, the Calves, we're missing one Minnesota, right. I
spoke to one of these coaches, and that coach told me,
I think we have a four percent chance of getting him,
But if it makes sense, I believe we have every
bit of that four percent. That doesn't make a ton
of sense. It is kind of like very much like
a ninety percent of the time it works on und
(18:56):
percent of the time type of thinking. I just think
that no one really knows anything, and that a lot
of the reporting that's happening is just echoes of people
who have informed opinions about like what would make sense.
So if you ask me which two teams made the
most sense, I would tell you that it's or which
(19:17):
teams made the most sense for Lebron James based on
what I know and based on the person I know,
I would tell you that it's Cleveland and Golden State.
I think everything else feels like a little more distant
because it doesn't have any real direct personal connection to him,
and I know he played in Miami. But I said
(19:37):
what I said, I think it just does. It feels different.
But that's not to say. Look, he may look at
Minnesota and say this is the best place for me
to play basketball, that their need at starting power forward
most aligns with my abilities today, and this gives me
the best chance to win an NBA championship. You may
(19:57):
look at that, he could look similar lead to Miami
and say, you know, this type of star power in
the front quart is precisely what I'm looking for, or
Philadelphia or whatever. But I think the arguments are cleanest
for Golden State in Cleveland. For Golden State, it's to
go play with your friends, simple, right. These are people
who knows. These are people who's competed against with for
(20:18):
fifteen plus years. Every day of the league gets younger
and he gets older, and these are his contemporaries, and
it would be a lot of fun for him to
do that. I think the argument for Cleveland is that it's,
you know, in addition to being home, more importantly, it's
the one place where he could go where the landing
is guaranteed to stick no matter what.
Speaker 1 (20:40):
Yeah, you know, Dan, The first time I ever heard
the name of Lebron James, my dear friend Sonny Vaccaro
was on my show This is like ninety nine, two thousand,
way back in the day, and I asked him, I say,
who's the best high school player in the country. He goes,
the best high school player in the country is a
ninth grade kid out of Akron, Ohio's name is James.
(21:01):
That's when Sonny first saw him play.
Speaker 5 (21:04):
Sonny was on this one earlier.
Speaker 2 (21:06):
Yeah, And so.
Speaker 1 (21:09):
From that point on, Lebron's always been the man on
every team that he's ever played, and this past year
we saw for the first time where he wasn't the man. Obviously,
it's Luca's team right now, I'm just curious that. Okay,
he accepted that role. But then he got the opportunity
in the playoffs, certainly in that Houston series with ar
and Luca out to once again assume control of the team,
(21:32):
and it worked out pretty well for the Lakers as
they got through that series. But if you're talking about
any of these teams, you know, especially when you talk
about the Sixers or you're talking about the Cavaliers who
were in the Eastern Conference finals, these are teams that
pretty much have the pieces in place. And do you
believe that if Lebron joined a team like that that
(21:53):
he would just be a smooth fit or just by
his nature would be an instant disruptor to any of
those type team.
Speaker 5 (22:01):
I mean, I think on the court, the answer is yes,
he can fit in almost anything, right. He's such a
well rounded player. He is such a smart player that
he can bend his skills to do, you know, functionally
whatever on the best wall court. I think off the court, certainly, No,
I mean it's not easy being around Lebron James. And
(22:23):
some of it is you know, his and his team's doing,
and some of it is just the fact that he's
Lebron James, right, and that you know, on a night
where let's just say you're in Minnesota, right, and on
a night where the Melo ball, you know, scores thirty
ten and has ten and ten and should be the story,
but Lebron, you know, becomes the oldest player ever to
(22:44):
have a double double, the Melo ball is going to
answer questions by Lebron James. It's just like, this is
just kind of how it goes. And that's not to
say that, you know, guys aren't cool at this and
it's like a full on distraction guys that you used
talking about other players and stuff like that. But I
think Lebron is different. You know, no one's been dissecting
more written about more there's been no more, you know,
(23:07):
a bloc conversations on talk shows. You know, you have
to hear about reckless speculation about the players he wants
to play with, and you know, implicit power that that
he has to build the rosters around him. It can
be a lot, and I think, you know, not every
ecosystem in the NBA is sort of built for that.
(23:28):
I think, you know the ones that are still in
play here. I mean, like Golden State has handled plenty
of ego, plenty of drama, right like Old had for them.
You know, I think Philadelphia is interesting on that front,
right Like, this isn't the most patient I said this
(23:49):
lovingly to people, the people of Philadelphia not the most
patient group of fans in America, you know. And they're
going to be integrating a new piece in Jaylen Brown already,
so you're gonna be adding a second one in that
facun be difficult. You know, the big changes that are
happening in Miami already, plenty of drama there, you know.
I think Cleveland to a degree is used to it.
(24:11):
Golden State again to a degree, is used to it.
These feel like the places that are most equipped for it.
But look, I mean I think, I think, yeah, it
can be a headache, but it's like always worth it,
Like he's always been worth it as a player, and
I think he's still going to be worth it, And
it's never really been particularly close.

with us here on a Wednesday, it's Steve Hartman Jonas

to seventy. Now, what would it have taken for Lebron
to remain with the Lakers, Like, what sort of a deal,
what sort of a concession? What would have needed to

happen for him to remain with the Lakers as opposed
to finding himself in this spot yet again where he's
trying to find another team to end his career with.
Speaker 5 (25:06):
I think like a pretty big shift in Laker philosophy honestly, right,
that this was a team that was really committed to
building a roster and using its cap space to build
a roster that best fits and suits what Lukadatri like
wants and needs to succeed. And you know, like that's
(25:32):
that that player is not in the mix for this.
Like you know, when I say that player Lebron James,
like he doesn't that's not that's not a part of
the recipe. And that's not it, I mean, which is
confusing because he's also settle things to be a part
of all recipes. Right, But like the Lakers were very
committed and the minute they did to Lucado should we're
(25:52):
very committed to going down this road, you know, aggressively
acquiring a center, aggressively adding a stretch five a stress
stretch for you know, adding more shooting and methodice on
the wing, and like, yeah, maybe if there was stuff
left over, I think like they could have circled back,
but there was you know, the plan was to not
have anything left over.
Speaker 1 (26:13):
So Dan jokes aside about the snow Time Lakers and
the Cream team. When you look at their roster, the
core of their roster right now, and obviously I'll take
an account that guys stay on the court, stay healthy.
Speaker 3 (26:28):
How good of a team is this?
Speaker 1 (26:29):
I mean, we saw a fifty win team before. Or
is this a better roster now than they were a
year ago?
Speaker 5 (26:37):
Well, I mean I think right if they thought so.
To answer your question, I believe it is a It
is a better team because it gets them closer to
like what you need to do to win in the
NBA right now and the way you can win in
the NBA because you have a great player and then
you put all your resources into maximizing that great player
(26:58):
strengths and minimizing that players weaknesses. Simple, right, Like, I mean,
it's hard to do, but I mean, this is this
is what the Knicks did. This is what the Spurs
are trying to do around Victim Wimenyama. This is what
the Celtics have done. Like you find you have your greatness,
you you hide as many of the weaknesses as you
(27:18):
can with your sporting players, and then you you maximize
the gifts that your star has. I think that this
Lakers team will have better shooting, it has better depth.
I think that it's younger, so it'll be more dynamic,
more athletic. I do think that, you know, there's still
(27:39):
real work to be done on you know, it does
need more defense, it needs more particularly point of attack defense.
It does need a little more size. I think there
are questions at backup center, and then obviously right like
I mean, we say put aside the questions of health.
You know, the three most important players in this team,
two of them weren't helping the playoffs last year, one
(28:01):
didn't play in the playoffs, and Luka Doncic and you know,
Walker Tesla played five games last year due to a
shoulder surgery. So, like, those guys all have to be healthy.
But I think the roster is like built better for that, right,
Like that's where a player like Colin Sexton helps, you know,
Colin Sexton, a huge part of what he's going to
be asked to do is to get help get the
(28:22):
Lakers through eighty two games, you know, as a as
a scorer, as a guy can who can take some
of the pressure off of you know, dodge and rees,
particularly when one of those guys is out with an
ankle or a sore calf or something like that. So
I think they're closer to being like the best possible
version of a Lukadovic team, even if maybe they don't
(28:45):
have as much talent, which I you know, certainly on
the top they don't. But they took that you know,
fifty three million dollars you know from Lebron James and
carved it up into three different players.
Speaker 3 (28:55):
It's also You're not going to fix it all in
one offseason, right of course. So like it's like everyone
just expected like, well, you know, they're trading out what
they had with Lebron for this. I mean, we need
more than that. It's well, you can't get it all
done in one offseason.
Speaker 5 (29:08):
It's gonna s So I think it's yeah, I think
it's realistically like probably like a three transaction cycle process, right, Like,
I franc hate this. I had a discussion with one
and the Thomas and a center you know VI the
other day about this any kind of role design that
I said, Look, I mean, this is the reality of it,
right is that Like now where it gets tricky for
the Lakers is that, you know, do they have the
(29:30):
ammunition you know today and at the trade deadline and
as they move you know, a year from now and
next sumerd to like to go from being like, you know,
I think they're going to be a really good basketball team,
right Like if alseholds like they should be a you know,
a top three offensive basketball team, and I trust this
coaching staff to have the defense be good enough, right
(29:52):
you know, certainly at least through the regular season, and
you know that should put you in a good position
in the West. This is a coaching staff that they
they bested their you know preseason, you know over under
win totals with each of the last two seasons with
imperfect rosters. This is a roster that's much more tailored
to what they're going to try to do, right, Like,
there's gonna be less less squinting and moving people into
(30:15):
roles they're not accustomed to that. All being said, like,
you know, they have one first round pick swap and
they have three second round picks to trade today, right,
And you know, if you want to say that those
three second round picks can be ear marked to like
help you get a starting power forward with an outgoing contract,
(30:35):
then you just have a pick swap to address whatever
else you need to address. So that's if Cavan Lodi
can't stay healthy and you need a backup center, you've
got a pick swap to do it. Even worse, if
Walker Kessel hurt and you need a starting level center.
You just don't have the ability to fix these things.
And I think if I were a pessimist, that'd be
(30:56):
the thing that makes the most nervous about this plan.
It's just like the last of outs like they're just
aren't any.

Nil Man.

And that's that's one of the problems here, is that
these sponsors that are rolling out the money for these
nil deals and getting in bed with these you know,
these universities. And I'm believing it's a it's a give
and take on both sides, but you better deliver, right,
I mean, the pressure on this kid to actually be

some now if he turns out to be a star,
then they get their money's worth. But if it goes
like Spencer Rattler where he ended up getting benched for
a freshman named Caleb Williams and all of a sudden
you got this advertising going on with him at two
car dealerships in Oklahoma.

It was a tough situation.
Speaker 3 (36:04):
Yeah, And you also wonder if you're the company now
you're following along, going are we getting what we're paying for?
Exactly the point and and so then the pressure is
felt from and that's why whenever you hear these complaints
with the nil era here, whenever you hear these complaints
from you know, kids or you know people telling you know,
they're just kids, you know, all the pressure they feel,
(36:25):
and the pressure is money. Well, that's what comes with
this man. That's why professionals have dealt dealt with their
entire life. And that's that's that's part of the deal.
When you sign that big contract, when you get that
big sponsorship, you better deliver or else people are going
to get on you about it. And so the fact
that he's partnered up and he's got this thing going,
it's just it's it's wild to think that it wasn't
(36:48):
that long We were actually talking about this on the
show this morning with with Brady and LeVar. If you
go back to the Jim Tressel Ohio State tattoo stuff
and go back and look at what the crime actually
wants to where they were trading Ohio State memorabilia for

see some return on their investment that people are listening

you and you had no say in it. Well, we
can reverse that. The decision was made for you. Now

Look, there was remember Condom depot. So Condom was it
was a big promoter of like M M A and
boxing events to where they were trying to get any
sort of promotion they could get. And so guys would
be rot when you know, walking into the cage or
into the ring and on their shore. So it would
be condom deep out of it. But what is this
But at that point you're looking for whatever money you

can make, Like you're like you're trying to partner up
with whoever you if somebody is going to give you
money to going there and make make it easier to live,
but you'll say yes to it in a lot of
in a lot of ways.
Speaker 1 (40:05):
See so different now because if you're if you're getting
that nil money, you got to produce on social media,
you know, your Instagram or whatever it is. You got
to be doing content constantly and ring up as many
followers as you possibly can. That's how you sell to yourself.
I mean those were early on with the nil deals.
(40:26):
The gymnast that is Paul Skeene's girl. She did it
because she had a huge following on social media.
Speaker 2 (40:32):
And so that's that's the other pressure.
Speaker 1 (40:35):
So along with you know, learning the playbook or playing
the game at a high level, whatever your sport may be,
you've got to be dynamite on social media to justify
these huge nil deals they're making.
Speaker 3 (40:47):
Yeah, it's a well look, I mean, best of luck.
I'm glad we were able to pronounce the name honor
for a Lave Johnson. For the record, I want to
point that out. If I butcher that, we'll recut it
and put it in post production, trying to make something
