new positions in business strategy and growth development and in
business ops, the Lakers now find themselves with a new owner.

A big story today. The Lakers sell again. They were
just officially sold in October. Wow Man freaked out to
Dodger owner Mark Walter, and he turns and sells them again,

this time to Bob Eiger and Josh Kushner for a
record twelve and a half billion dollars. Here to make
some sense of it, I suppose none of us here
in the sports radio world are macro economists. There's one
guy they could, Slee Wah seems to have the temperament.

Alan Sleewah from Hoops Talk when he was the Laker
pre half and post guy, there was one owner. It
was a simple time. Now if you're the Laker pre
half and post guy, your head's spinning like many faces
and he man, you don't know what's going on. You
don't know who's asked to kiss on. You're so count

Fellas? Thank you for having me on very very confusing
couple of hours. Let's put it that way.

Were you more surprised by Gmie selling or this sale?
I guess it had to be the latter, But just
talk about how different those two moments are and how
and how they contrast.
Speaker 5 (13:53):
Yeah, that's a good question, because you know, obviously, when
the Bus family sold to Mark Walter and his group,
that was shocking and it was kind of came a
little bit out of nowhere, but it also made a
ton of sense. It's like, all right, you got this
family that took over twenty thirteen, Doctor Jerry Buss passes away,
you got six siblings that not everybody looks at this,

you know, franchise that not everybody's on the same page.
I think that's safe to say. We saw that play
out for ten plus years, and I thought Genie did
something back then that wasn't a surprise. She sold to
what you thought was going to be an ownership group
that was going to add stability to the Lakers, and
that you just felt like, this is a more updated
(14:35):
version of how ownerships could look. And obviously I don't
need to share with everybody the track record that Mark
Walters had with the Dodgers, so it just it all
made sense, and you just again, I think stability is
the word that I would use. I don't know what
the hell happened this morning, and I think everybody's I
think everybody's still trying to figure that out. So from
(14:56):
between the two of them, this one is so much
more shocking and this one, and I think we're all
waiting for real answers because I don't think we have
real answers, and I think we could all make assumptions
of why this happened, and you know, if people want
to say, oh, well, you know it's it was a
quick flip and made a couple of bill and let's
call it a day. That doesn't sound like how ownership
(15:17):
groups or companies like the Googenheim Group. That doesn't sound
like how they operate. I don't think they're trying to
get a quick flip. So I was definitely more shocked
about the news this morning.
Speaker 4 (15:26):
And you look at what they've done in the last
nine to ten months for moving the G League team
out of the South By to get more room for
development and technology down there, the front office, bringing in
a couple of assistant gms, the scouting department, the analytical department.
It doesn't feel like this was a move that they
thought they.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
Were going to be making.
Speaker 5 (15:46):
Yeah, I think, listen, you guys can go deeper into this.
And you know, obviously you guys are very, very, very
heavily tied with the Dodgers, and we've seen some reports
over the last couple of months. Yeah, exactly exactly, But
you could see some reports these last couple of months
of people within the Dodgers are helping out with the Lakers,
and you guys have read some of those those stories.

Early on, It's like, all right, Andrew Friedman is with
Rob Polenka and kind of showing them a little bit
of how this front office works. So I think there
were some some clear ties of how these two organizations
were gonna There was gonna be synergy and they were
going to the business side of things, how you can
all right, what's the baseball season look like? And then
(16:28):
what's the NBA season looked like. It kind of almost
felt like this this ecosystem, this twelve month ecosystem, and
these you know, these two parks are or the stadium
and the and Dodger Stadium is from Crypto and Dodgers
datum a few miles apart. It was just this ecosystem
that felt like, Okay, this is how it's gonna look

like for the next twenty five thirty years, because that's
typically what happens when when franchises are sold.

Sports history, the Lakers franchise being flipped like a Honda
Accord with special speakers in the nineties, I mean, with

or anybody right now, Rob Polenka, you know, I mean,
it's important to be productive at a time of change,
But damn, what do you expect from the new ownership group?
Obviously these are really rich guys who have trying to
get into the NBA game for a while.

I think the Lucas thing is kind of fascinating. I'm
trying to think off the top of my head, and
I wish I could credit the person, but somebody had
put out there just this is what Luca from his
time in Dallas to you know, new ownership coming taking over,
Mark Cuban, getting out of the mix, then getting traded
to the Lakers, Lakers getting sold, Lakers getting sold again.

You know, like Lucas probably looking.

At this like, but.
Speaker 5 (18:01):
What's what's a what's a normal franchise look like? Where
I don't have to go through this because he obviously
went through this when he was with the MEVS. I
don't know what Luca's got to think about this. I mean,
I think if he's I know, he put out a
really nice tweet and tried showing the backing and everything else,
and here's the reality from a basketball perspective. Maybe in
six months from now. This is all completely behind us,

and new ownership deep pockets. They invest twelve and a
half billion dollars. They're basically not getting rid of this
team hypothetically for X amount of years. Maybe all of
this doesn't mean anything. But I think if you said
here today, you're scratching your head. I think if you're
Rob Polenka, you're definitely scratching your head. And I think
Polenka's going to continue to have, you know, on his shoulders.

People got to look at him. You got new ownership
that comes in, Hey, is this one of the top
five president of basketball operations. I think most people would
say no, that he's not. And I'm trying to take
a shot at Rob. But if they are looking at
at the front office and trying to create stability and
trying to get the best minds, which is what we
thought Mark Walter and his group was trying to do
with the Lakers, I'm sure they'll take this. They'll take

the similar blueprint with new ownership.

Fifth ownership for Luka Doncics two in Dallas and now
his third ownership with the Lakers. Sliwa and I was
asked this morning do fans care who owns the Lakers.
I mean, the Lakers are the Lakers. And I thought
about it for I say, I used to Yeah they did,
and it was all about the Bus family, and then well,
the Bus family doesn't have enough money anymore because NBA
has changed. You need big, deep pockets in ownership, and
(19:35):
they got that in Mark Walter. And I kind of
wonder if Laker fans today are thinking, are we still
gonna have these deep pockets? Are they gonna still do
what they've been doing the last nine months and developing
and starting to stack together big front offices, analytical departments
and you know, show everybody on paper that they're gonna
do what they did with the Lakers like they did
with the Dodgers. I think for the fans Sleewa, they're
just hoping that it continues to build and they've got

owners with deep pockets.

I think it's a fair question, and I don't think
anybody has that answer, right. I mean, would this be
the first time that somebody with deep pockets gets into
the sports game and treats their franchise as a business. Right? Okay, Hey,
where areas where it makes sense? Do I really need
to spend all this, and I'm not telling you that's
what's gonna happen to the Lakers. But I think where

I think we're ownership, I think where fans felt comfortable
Mark Walter wasn't a stranger to them, and he has
built a goliath with the Dodgers, So there was this
just natural thought of okay, wait he did that with
that brand. Then, Yes, I know it's not.

Yes, I do understand there's you know, the rules are
different for the NBA, but yeah, winners are winners. He's
going to find a way to win. He's gonna go
get the best front office. He's going to take well,
how are the thunder do it, or how the Spurs
are doing or how some of these other franchises are
doing it, and understand the advantages that he would have
with the Lakers brand and being in southern California. You
kind of I don't think I'm with you. I don't

think owners particularly care who the owner is, but I
think for Laker fans there was definitely I know who
this guy is, I know the success that he has.
Why wouldn't I also think he's gonna have the same
success with the Lakers. Bob Iger has obviously been very,
very very successful in his career. I don't really know
much about John Kushner. I really don't, and I'm not

going to pretend like I do. But I think that
there's gonna be questions because they have not been in
the sports game. I think angel City FC is what
Bobby growns, but I think that was recently. That might
be him and his wife. So we will, we will
find out what, you know, what obviously they represent over time.

Will Obey is the new Genie Bush? Just one last thing, sliwah,
And look, I'm a pretty stupid guy. I take a
lot of things just at face value. I know they
put stuff in the water and poison the food and
I just drinking and eating. But am I supposed to
believe that they did a twelve and a half billion
dollar deal in three days? I wouldn't.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't.

But I'm supposed to believe that, right, Yes.

Yes, you are supposed to. And if and if you,
if you are told that, then you will believe it.

I mean, it took me like a month to buy
my house and it was much less, you know, much
less lucrative of a deal.

Because I just I just bought a couch recently, and
it was like a thirty five day prospect of which
couch I'm gonna pick?

I mean, I don't, Yeah, I listen. I think it's
I think there are a lot of people out there
that are sitting there today and they're saying, what the
hell is everybody talking about? And you know, over time,
maybe we get more answers to it, maybe we don't.
Maybe it was sold in three days and this idea
just came up, and I'm going to be skeptical until

I get more answers, and we'll see what happens.

You know, they made the Grand Canyon when Paul Bunyan

long day of the lumberyard, and that that that his

the Bus family sold to Mark Walter and his group,
that was shocking and it was kind of came a
little bit out of nowhere, but it also made a
ton of sense. It's like, all right, you got this
family that took over twenty thirteen, Doctor Jerry Buss passes away,
you got six siblings that not everybody looks at this,

you know, franchise that not everybody's on the same page.
I think that's safe to say. We saw that play
out for ten plus years, and I thought Genie did
something back then that wasn't a surprise. She sold to
what you thought was going to be an ownership group
that was going to add stability to the Lakers, and
that you just felt like, this is a more updated

version of how ownerships could look. And obviously I don't
need to share with everybody the track record that Mark
Walters had with the Dodgers, so it just it all
made sense, and you just again, I think stability is
the word that I would use. I don't know what
the hell happened this morning, and I think everybody's I
think everybody's still trying to figure that out. So from

between the two of them, this one is so much
more shocking and this one, and I think we're all
waiting for real answers because I don't think we have
real answers, and I think we could all make assumptions
of why this happened, and you know, if people want
to say, oh, well, you know it's it was a
quick flip and made a couple of bill and let's
call it a day. That doesn't sound like how ownership

groups or companies like the Googenheim Group. That doesn't sound
like how they operate. I don't think they're trying to
get a quick flip. So I was definitely more shocked
about the news this morning.

And you look at what they've done in the last
nine to ten months for moving the G League team
out of the South By to get more room for
development and technology down there, the front office, bringing in
a couple of assistant gms, the scouting department, the analytical department.
It doesn't feel like this was a move that they

Were going to be making.

Yeah, I think, listen, you guys can go deeper into this.
And you know, obviously you guys are very, very, very
heavily tied with the Dodgers, and we've seen some reports

you could see some reports these last couple of months
of people within the Dodgers are helping out with the Lakers,
and you guys have read some of those those stories.

Early on, It's like, all right, Andrew Friedman is with
Rob Polenka and kind of showing them a little bit
of how this front office works. So I think there
were some some clear ties of how these two organizations
were gonna There was gonna be synergy and they were
going to the business side of things, how you can
all right, what's the baseball season look like? And then

what's the NBA season looked like. It kind of almost
felt like this this ecosystem, this twelve month ecosystem, and
these you know, these two parks are or the stadium

and here's the reality from a basketball perspective. Maybe in
six months from now. This is all completely behind us,

and new ownership deep pockets. They invest twelve and a
half billion dollars. They're basically not getting rid of this
team hypothetically for X amount of years. Maybe all of
this doesn't mean anything. But I think if you said
here today, you're scratching your head. I think if you're
Rob Polenka, you're definitely scratching your head. And I think
Polenka's going to continue to have, you know, on his shoulders.

People got to look at him. You got new ownership
that comes in, Hey, is this one of the top
five president of basketball operations. I think most people would
say no, that he's not. And I'm trying to take
a shot at Rob. But if they are looking at
at the front office and trying to create stability and
trying to get the best minds, which is what we
thought Mark Walter and his group was trying to do
with the Lakers, I'm sure they'll take this. They'll take

the similar blueprint with new ownership.

Fifth ownership for Luka Doncics two in Dallas and now
his third ownership with the Lakers. Sliwa and I was
asked this morning do fans care who owns the Lakers.
I mean, the Lakers are the Lakers. And I thought
about it for I say, I used to Yeah they did,
and it was all about the Bus family, and then well,
the Bus family doesn't have enough money anymore because NBA
has changed. You need big, deep pockets in ownership, and

they got that in Mark Walter. And I kind of
wonder if Laker fans today are thinking, are we still
gonna have these deep pockets? Are they gonna still do
what they've been doing the last nine months and developing
and starting to stack together big front offices, analytical departments
and you know, show everybody on paper that they're gonna
do what they did with the Lakers like they did
with the Dodgers. I think for the fans Sleewa, they're
just hoping that it continues to build and they've got

owners with deep pockets.

I think it's a fair question, and I don't think
anybody has that answer, right. I mean, would this be
the first time that somebody with deep pockets gets into
the sports game and treats their franchise as a business. Right? Okay, Hey,
where areas where it makes sense? Do I really need
to spend all this, and I'm not telling you that's
what's gonna happen to the Lakers. But I think where

I think we're ownership, I think where fans felt comfortable
Mark Walter wasn't a stranger to them, and he has
built a goliath with the Dodgers, So there was this
just natural thought of okay, wait he did that with
that brand. Then, Yes, I know it's not.

Yes, I do understand there's you know, the rules are
different for the NBA, but yeah, winners are winners. He's
going to find a way to win. He's gonna go
get the best front office. He's going to take well,
how are the thunder do it, or how the Spurs
are doing or how some of these other franchises are
doing it, and understand the advantages that he would have
with the Lakers brand and being in southern California. You
kind of I don't think I'm with you. I don't

think owners particularly care who the owner is, but I
think for Laker fans there was definitely I know who
this guy is, I know the success that he has.
Why wouldn't I also think he's gonna have the same
success with the Lakers. Bob Iger has obviously been very,
very very successful in his career. I don't really know
much about John Kushner. I really don't, and I'm not

going to pretend like I do. But I think that
there's gonna be questions because they have not been in
the sports game. I think angel City FC is what
Bobby growns, but I think that was recently. That might
be him and his wife. So we will, we will
find out what, you know, what obviously they represent over time.

Will Obey is the new Genie Bush? Just one last thing, sliwah,
And look, I'm a pretty stupid guy. I take a
lot of things just at face value. I know they
put stuff in the water and poison the food and
I just drinking and eating. But am I supposed to
believe that they did a twelve and a half billion
dollar deal in three days? I wouldn't.

This Kathy Lee Baits. His legacy is even more enduring
than Fried Green Tomatoes, Believe it or not. Born in Falmouth,

mass her father died when she was a new born.
Raised by a mother and a literary aunt, probably a lesbian,
she went to Wellesley College. Now you're just assuming. Oh no,
I'm not well the aunt I'm assuming. Oh yeah, I'm
not assuming. It about Kathy she put from the rough hmm,

Wellesley goblu well educated and portly like Max Muncy. She
wrote a young adult novel at twenty that won awards,
and then she used that prize money to travel to
England and studied at Oxford. Bates is credited in one
of her poems for popularizing the concept of Missus Claus,

Santa Claus's wife woman married to Santa Claus. Her look
just the whole deal. She described Missus Claws in her
Christmas poem Goodie Santa Claus on a sleigh Ride she
wrote for The New York Times. She wrote a travelog
about Spain. She moved back to Wellesley, but still traveled

widely Egypt places like that. During the summer of eighteen
ninety three, she wrote the poem that is the lyrics
to the song America, the Beautiful, Pretty Big Song. She
wrote it after being inspired by being at Pike's Peak
and looking out on the horizon of the Rocky Mountains,

and all written during an economic depression in the eighteen nineties.
The poem went, well, you would call it back then,
viral in newspapers and stuff.

That's how it went viral back in the day, in
the papers, pamphlets of papers, the Salem News, Depress and

Just pumping it out. During World War One, a battalion
sang the song while they were marching around, and then

it took a few decades to come together as a song.

Catherine Coleman was on the Wellsleie faculty, an administration many
alleged to her and Kathy Lee Bates had a special friendship,
