And then AI takes it a step further and creates

free agency was pretty big here in twenty twenty six,

especially because of the Lebron James and Kawhi Leonard like
in the same day, A basically leaving and freeing up
a lot of space and a lot of new thought.

I suppose, oh God, make it stop. I can't say
this free agency.
Speaker 2 (15:13):
Is up or new imagining of what these NBA teams
in town are going to be like and how they
will compete in what is a very difficult Western Conference
in the NBA after the Knicks just won it all
down as an overall thing. Are you modern free agency?
I think it's pretty different from what we even fifteen

years ago used to cover here on the radio.

Most of the time.

I got to be honest, my eyes kind of roll
on the back of my head like a slot machine.
While people are talking about this sort of stuff.

But how is it different in the last you know?

And just like the sport I cover, do you find
is it you find it less appealing to cover because
of the way free agency works well?

To answer your first question, I think it's because of
the rules in the salary cap and all the restrictions
now on teams with the apron second apron, all that
it's made maneuvering and planning the one thing that I
think fans need to understand. And I even catch myself
sometimes when you think about this, If you trade away
star players like the Clippers have, it's not like, Okay,
(16:26):
we're rebuilding and that's going to be done in a
year like you. Like I look at the Clippers roster
now and they.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
It's like Candy Land, you go back to the beginning.
But no, they have a bunch of good players.
Speaker 6 (16:38):
Sure, I'm not sure how they fit and I'm not
sure how like if that's the plan. But I have
a feeling it's more about collecting assets and then trying
to get pieces that do fit together and put together
a starting five that looks like a starting five. They
have a lot of players that are the same position now.
But that's kind of how it goes. And like you say, okay,

we're we're gonna hit the reset button, not all the
way because we saw have some good players, but it's
still going to take you a couple of years to
get to where you're contending.

And that's the thing.

And I say this all the time with you and
Matt pe like, being in the middle is the worst
place you can be, and so you have to you
have to start thinking long term, one year, two year,
three year, five years, how you're going to be able
to under the cap or apron or whatever your plan
is to eventually be a contender because it's okay, we're
a playoff team, great, but you really have no chance
(17:32):
of winning the whole thing. And that's where every team
is trying to get to. I talked to a lot
of these front office guys during the draft, and that's
kind of the conversation is, look, we're we need to
keep adding, keep adding. It's going to take some time,
but hopefully eventually we get there. And I think that's
what we're seeing this year. The only difference is this
year a lot more big names involved in transactions.
Speaker 2 (17:55):
I guess that's what made it different for those of
us covering it on the radio, because that's what makes
us have to talk about it. But I remember twenty
years ago the Detroit Pistons beat Kobe and Shaq and
basically ended that kind of that that era of Laker basketball.
And they had Karl Malone and Gary Payton and guys
like that, but it was a Kobe and Shaq Phil
(18:17):
Jackson team. And you looked at the Detroit Piston team
and you're like, oh my god, man, this guy, this guy,
this guy, this guy Billups and Rip Hamilton and all yeah,
all these and then a bench and all this. And
I don't think that's I don't know if that's similar
to what it's like now. But when did it start
to shift to where it's not everybody has a big
two or big three or whatever, but you need like
(18:39):
nine freaking greyhound like whippet dudes running up and down.
When did that happen? Is that a Oka C thing
or did it happen before that? Or has it always
been the case and it's just become a talking point.
Speaker 6 (18:50):
I think it's always been the case in theory, but
I think there's certain gms and certain front offices that
are much better at it than others in player evaluation,
whether pre agency or the draft, and so like Sam Presty,
I've said this forever on the show. Sam Presty is
the best that's doing it, and a big reason why

he's so good at it is he has drafted well
because him and his and his staff really understand player evaluation.
And I do say this one thing that has changed
in the last that's really become a thing in the
last five years, is analytics. And I do think that
(19:31):
teams that have completely bought into analytics kind of missed
the point. Sometimes they do overthink it, overthinking let the
numbers dictate what their eyes aren't telling them kind of thing.
And so I think Sam Presty understands that balance like
the eye test, what am I watching?
Speaker 3 (19:53):

And these analytics back me up because the only thing
I don't like about analytics is you can make a
case for anything in any walk of life. All you
have to do is choose the right metrics to make Kapler.
Speaker 2 (20:08):
Sat on our show many years ago, and this is
before he ended up a GM and the major leagues
and a manager for at least two teams, almost the
Dodger manager. He came on our show and I was
joking and I said, like, at a certain point, when
does not scoring, when does scoring runs no longer matter?
Speaker 3 (20:25):
Said you know what's interesting that you say that?
Speaker 2 (20:26):
And he went on for like two minutes, and I
was like, this is that's I believe what you mean
by missing the point.
Speaker 6 (20:32):
Right, And Kenny and Kenny Atkinson going on when they
were down to the Knicks saying, well, we're analytically we're
up to games in this series, Like what are you
talking about? Like that just tells me that you're overwhelmed
by analytics and you're not using your brain, your experience
to understand what you're trying to do. And so I
think that has changed a lot in terms of player
(20:56):
evaluation in the draft for sure. Now I don't know, Adam,
you might have something to say about this, but like
in free agency, if you're talking about a seven year pro, okay,
now I can go back to analytics and see how
he has affected the game for seven years in the NBA.
But when you're evaluating a draft pick, to me, it's
awfully hard to use analytics and metrics from his college career.
(21:19):
It may be only one year in college to really
spit out how good this kid's going to be.
Speaker 7 (21:23):
Well, and you know how young these guys are now
coming out dawn still and Keaton Woggler goes to the
Clippers at nineteen and shoots forty percent from the outside.
Does that tell you if those are catching shoot threes?
Does that tell you if they're off the dribble threes?
Then they start digging into all that stuff. The Clippers
said they actually watched every single pass that he made
in college on tape, if you believe it or not.
(21:45):
So they're trying to merge eye tests and analytics. But
I'm with you, some guys take it too far. We
saw Jared McCain get traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Sam Presty picked him up for nothing. It got Darryl
Morey basically fired from Philadelphia again.

I have the value, like a lot of these guys
in NBA front offices. I've been doing this draft for
a long time, twenty two years. I finally figured out
this year. I said, oh, I've been doing it for
eighteen I've been doing it for twenty two years, and
I can, and I can pretty much if a kid
comes into our gym the year before. And I'm gonna
give you the example of this year. Marez Johnson came
(22:26):
in last summer for a week and after three days,
and at that point he was like an early to
mid second rounder. After three days, I told his agents,
I said, there's zero chance he's not a first round pick.
Speaker 3 (22:38):
There's zero zero.
Speaker 6 (22:39):
I would bet whatever you guys pay me, which is
a pretty good amount. I will bet at all that
he goes in the first round. Now, he was helped
by winning the national championship, which really helps. Winning really
matters to these NBA guys. But then he comes back
this year after winning that, and now people start digging
into all this stuff, and all of a sudden, he's
always I need a twenty five. Oh, he's lottery for sure,

ends up going nine to the Mavericks in my opinion.
And what I'm getting to is, I knew what his
numbers were, his raw numbers. I didn't have any analytical
information on mares Johnson.

I only knew what I was watching. Period. Wow.

I mean, I think you pretty much put a put
a very emphatic exclamation point on how most people feel
where it's like, you know, it's more of a It
really is more of a mix of things.

It has to for anybody to understand what's actually going on.

it's actually gonna be like for the next few years.

The only thing to keep an eye on to kind
of wrap this whole conversation up, is one how much
money are they gonna spend? I know that guy's got
a lot of money. Are they willing to go into
the second apron? And you can tell they're building around
Luca And what I said earlier, it doesn't happen in
one year. Lebron was a big part of the team

obviously the last eight years now he's gone. Now it's
Luca's team. What do we need to do to keep improving,
keep improving our roster built around Luca to get up
there with the Spurs and the Thunder and the Knicks
and all those teams.

up on TikTok of July fourth and ended in four

But what do they do in these takeovers.

They run around and they loot, and they shoot and

of groceries strewn across Newport. And the real question is,

you know what Newport is going to be like next
year for July fourth. It's gonna be like the de
militarized zone in South Korea. I mean, they're gonna shoot
people on side. They were in touch with park officials
had nots Berry Farm, and they said they would beef
up the police present one of several alerts issued by

Southern California law or enforcement in recent days. The Huntington
Beach Police stopped one. The other day they were put
out on civil alert. Do you think the Huntington Beach
Police were the same as the Newport Beach police?

to know? Theft, vandalism and violence? Okay? Is that enough? Yeah?

Three thousand people showed up last weekend in Newport. They fought,
they disrupted several blocks of the Balboa Peninsula. Fires were lit, thefts,
businesses were blown up, things were thrown at police, and
crowds were running rampant boyd to park. Police said they
were identifying organizers or the potential knots Very Farm event

and would take appropriate enforcement action against anybody who engaged
in criminal or disrupted behavior.

It's not a tender style model, don It's an AI
system that users are paired based on their interests, so

And then AI takes it a step further and creates
an itinerary for your first date.

free agency was pretty big here in twenty twenty six,

especially because of the Lebron James and Kawhi Leonard like
in the same day, A basically leaving and freeing up
a lot of space and a lot of new thought.

I suppose, oh God, make it stop. I can't say
this free agency.
Speaker 2 (15:13):
Is up or new imagining of what these NBA teams
in town are going to be like and how they
will compete in what is a very difficult Western Conference
in the NBA after the Knicks just won it all
down as an overall thing. Are you modern free agency?
I think it's pretty different from what we even fifteen
(15:35):
years ago used to cover here on the radio.

Most of the time.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
I got to be honest, my eyes kind of roll
on the back of my head like a slot machine.
While people are talking about this sort of stuff.

But how is it different in the last you know?
I don't know.

And just like the sport I cover, do you find
is it you find it less appealing to cover because
of the way free agency works well?

To answer your first question, I think it's because of
the rules in the salary cap and all the restrictions
now on teams with the apron second apron, all that
it's made maneuvering and planning the one thing that I
think fans need to understand. And I even catch myself
sometimes when you think about this, If you trade away
star players like the Clippers have, it's not like, Okay,
(16:26):
we're rebuilding and that's going to be done in a
year like you. Like I look at the Clippers roster
now and they.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
It's like Candy Land, you go back to the beginning.
But no, they have a bunch of good players.
Speaker 6 (16:38):
Sure, I'm not sure how they fit and I'm not
sure how like if that's the plan. But I have
a feeling it's more about collecting assets and then trying
to get pieces that do fit together and put together
a starting five that looks like a starting five. They
have a lot of players that are the same position now.
But that's kind of how it goes. And like you say, okay,
(16:59):
we're we're gonna hit the reset button, not all the
way because we saw have some good players, but it's
still going to take you a couple of years to
get to where you're contending.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
And that's the thing.
Speaker 6 (17:09):
And I say this all the time with you and
Matt pe like, being in the middle is the worst
place you can be, and so you have to you
have to start thinking long term, one year, two year,
three year, five years, how you're going to be able
to under the cap or apron or whatever your plan
is to eventually be a contender because it's okay, we're
a playoff team, great, but you really have no chance
(17:32):
of winning the whole thing. And that's where every team
is trying to get to. I talked to a lot
of these front office guys during the draft, and that's
kind of the conversation is, look, we're we need to
keep adding, keep adding. It's going to take some time,
but hopefully eventually we get there. And I think that's
what we're seeing this year. The only difference is this
year a lot more big names involved in transactions.
Speaker 2 (17:55):
I guess that's what made it different for those of
us covering it on the radio, because that's what makes
us have to talk about it. But I remember twenty
years ago the Detroit Pistons beat Kobe and Shaq and
basically ended that kind of that that era of Laker basketball.
And they had Karl Malone and Gary Payton and guys
like that, but it was a Kobe and Shaq Phil
(18:17):
Jackson team. And you looked at the Detroit Piston team
and you're like, oh my god, man, this guy, this guy,
this guy, this guy Billups and Rip Hamilton and all yeah,
all these and then a bench and all this. And
I don't think that's I don't know if that's similar
to what it's like now. But when did it start
to shift to where it's not everybody has a big
two or big three or whatever, but you need like
(18:39):
nine freaking greyhound like whippet dudes running up and down.
When did that happen? Is that a Oka C thing
or did it happen before that? Or has it always
been the case and it's just become a talking point.
Speaker 6 (18:50):
I think it's always been the case in theory, but
I think there's certain gms and certain front offices that
are much better at it than others in player evaluation,
whether pre agency or the draft, and so like Sam Presty,
I've said this forever on the show. Sam Presty is
the best that's doing it, and a big reason why
(19:11):
he's so good at it is he has drafted well
because him and his and his staff really understand player evaluation.
And I do say this one thing that has changed
in the last that's really become a thing in the
last five years, is analytics. And I do think that
(19:31):
teams that have completely bought into analytics kind of missed
the point. Sometimes they do overthink it, overthinking let the
numbers dictate what their eyes aren't telling them kind of thing.
And so I think Sam Presty understands that balance like
the eye test, what am I watching?
Speaker 3 (19:53):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (19:54):
And these analytics back me up because the only thing
I don't like about analytics is you can make a
case for anything in any walk of life. All you
have to do is choose the right metrics to make Kapler.
Speaker 2 (20:08):
Sat on our show many years ago, and this is
before he ended up a GM and the major leagues
and a manager for at least two teams, almost the
Dodger manager. He came on our show and I was
joking and I said, like, at a certain point, when
does not scoring, when does scoring runs no longer matter?
Speaker 3 (20:25):
Said you know what's interesting that you say that?
Speaker 2 (20:26):
And he went on for like two minutes, and I
was like, this is that's I believe what you mean
by missing the point.
Speaker 6 (20:32):
Right, And Kenny and Kenny Atkinson going on when they
were down to the Knicks saying, well, we're analytically we're
up to games in this series, Like what are you
talking about? Like that just tells me that you're overwhelmed
by analytics and you're not using your brain, your experience
to understand what you're trying to do. And so I
think that has changed a lot in terms of player
(20:56):
evaluation in the draft for sure. Now I don't know, Adam,
you might have something to say about this, but like
in free agency, if you're talking about a seven year pro, okay,
now I can go back to analytics and see how
he has affected the game for seven years in the NBA.
But when you're evaluating a draft pick, to me, it's
awfully hard to use analytics and metrics from his college career.
(21:19):
It may be only one year in college to really
spit out how good this kid's going to be.
Speaker 7 (21:23):
Well, and you know how young these guys are now
coming out dawn still and Keaton Woggler goes to the
Clippers at nineteen and shoots forty percent from the outside.
Does that tell you if those are catching shoot threes?
Does that tell you if they're off the dribble threes?
Then they start digging into all that stuff. The Clippers
said they actually watched every single pass that he made
in college on tape, if you believe it or not.
(21:45):
So they're trying to merge eye tests and analytics. But
I'm with you, some guys take it too far. We
saw Jared McCain get traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Sam Presty picked him up for nothing. It got Darryl
Morey basically fired from Philadelphia again.
Speaker 6 (22:06):
I have the value, like a lot of these guys
in NBA front offices. I've been doing this draft for
a long time, twenty two years. I finally figured out
this year. I said, oh, I've been doing it for
eighteen I've been doing it for twenty two years, and
I can, and I can pretty much if a kid
comes into our gym the year before. And I'm gonna
give you the example of this year. Marez Johnson came
(22:26):
in last summer for a week and after three days,
and at that point he was like an early to
mid second rounder. After three days, I told his agents,
I said, there's zero chance he's not a first round pick.
Speaker 3 (22:38):
There's zero zero.
Speaker 6 (22:39):
I would bet whatever you guys pay me, which is
a pretty good amount. I will bet at all that
he goes in the first round. Now, he was helped
by winning the national championship, which really helps. Winning really
matters to these NBA guys. But then he comes back
this year after winning that, and now people start digging
into all this stuff, and all of a sudden, he's
always I need a twenty five. Oh, he's lottery for sure,
(23:02):
ends up going nine to the Mavericks in my opinion.
And what I'm getting to is, I knew what his

The Buenda Park police say they're aware of an unsanctioned
event that was planned this weekend at knots Berry Farm,
which adds to the growing list of agencies on red
alert after the team takeover in Newport Beach that blew
up on TikTok of July fourth and ended in four

hundred arrests.

But what do they do in these takeovers.
Speaker 2 (29:02):
They run around and they loot, and they shoot and
they wail shanty town. I don't know if there was
a shooting in Newport, but I was there. There was
a lot of bad. They blew up the whole pavilions
destroyed it. Wow, millions and millions and millions of dollars
of groceries strewn across Newport. And the real question is,

you know what Newport is going to be like next
year for July fourth. It's gonna be like the de
militarized zone in South Korea. I mean, they're gonna shoot
people on side. They were in touch with park officials
had nots Berry Farm, and they said they would beef
up the police present one of several alerts issued by

Southern California law or enforcement in recent days. The Huntington
Beach Police stopped one. The other day they were put
out on civil alert. Do you think the Huntington Beach
Police were the same as the Newport Beach police?

Don Probably not Newport? What happened there? Don you want
to know? Theft, vandalism and violence? Okay? Is that enough? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (30:12):
Three thousand people showed up last weekend in Newport. They fought,
they disrupted several blocks of the Balboa Peninsula. Fires were lit, thefts,
businesses were blown up, things were thrown at police, and
crowds were running rampant boyd to park. Police said they
were identifying organizers or the potential knots Very Farm event

and would take appropriate enforcement action against anybody who engaged
in criminal or disrupted behavior.

I just when you got notts and you got all
those cowboys running around with the blanks and their guns

this cowboys like you know, I had a couple of

Fights between teenagers forced the park to close early in
July twenty twenty two. The park's policy state that, because
of increasing incidents of unruly and inappropriate behavior, kids younger
than sixteen are required to have somebody twenty one or
older with them during afternoon hours. Because my day, you
can go to Knott's Berry Farm in eighth grade and

Not that anybody's making out with.

Me, but watch out, everybody, beware of the team takeover
because it's a thing. And my advice would be stay
out of Newport Beach next July because they're gonna make
it like a minefield and.

They're gonna freak kill anybody on the side they lost
their pavilions.

Don yeh, go down to that place and take those people,
all those white people's pavilions away.

That'll be the safest place to be on July fourth
next year. Oh yeah, but you're gonna have to get
like a visa anyway. Don't do it, kids.

You don't need a big group of two thousand others
to run around and raise hell. It's better to raise
hell with one other kid late at night driving around
the neighborhood. How would you know, we'll be back with
