A star for decades, made a lot of money, nominated
for an oscar just playing a harmonica. When asked to
about the Beatles in nineteen sixty four, he said that
they possessed little musical talent.

He has been awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation,
and in nineteen ninety nine he was inducted into the
Inventor's Hall of Fame. Because of these cylinders in which

when we had the the Bengals in town to play
the Chargers this year, and pretty much everybody that that
works is like, look, it's our favorite player to watch.
Everybody loves watching Joe Burrow. It's just fun to watch
that guy quarterback of football team. I would assume you
feel the same way about Luca. What what can you
(16:49):
say about the many times you've you've called games where
Luca was taken on the Lakers, the way that he plays,
and how would you describe maybe to casual fans that
don't watch a lot of basketball. Why everybody is losing,
as you said, their collective minds over the fact that
he's now on the Lakers.
Speaker 6 (17:07):
Yeah, I mean the deal with Luca is and you know,
other than the games Matt that I've done with him
in the lineup, and that's like just about every time
he's played obviously in the last six or seven years.
You know, it's not like I see him for a
full game. Like I sit down and watch a Mad's
game on television. You know, you see the highlights because
(17:28):
everybody now we live with highlights, so we get to
see it. Here's the deal about Luca. I mean, he
could drop literally fifty to sixty at any time, and
the vision with his passing, he'll he'll make some passes
that are just you know, magical type passes and he's
gonna readout er two. You know a lot of people
say stuff about his defense. The Dallas announcers swears, they

swear he plays decent defense. We'll see what's that follow.
Speaker 4 (17:57):
Follow Oil says, Yeah, for sure, you know.
Speaker 6 (18:02):
He has you know what, Followo has one of those
voices that I don't have. You know, you can and
here's the funny thing. When you're when you're in Dallas
doing a game, Mark is literally literally you guys right
next to me to me, oh, and he cuts through
our telecast so big time.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
And then you guys hear that.
Speaker 6 (18:24):
And they probably can I know what it is, but
you know, so, you know, anybody who talked to with
Dallas says, yeah, it's good enough because his offense is
going to offset anything else that happens in that respect.
But just you're right, Matt, from the excitement standpoint, because
there's only a few players in basketball for for you know,
for the history of the game that can do some

things that really can excite the fan base and excite
fellow players. And one of them is Luca Dacs. So
we'll see what happened tonight.

When you say fellow players, Billy and you know what,
whatever follow He might have a big voice, but he
ain't got the California cool. I freaking building out, No.

We were kind of talking about the last week Lebron
James following the trade, kind of being that old dog
when a puppy shows up all of a sudden, he
gets a little bit more excited. He wants to start
playing ball again, want to start running around with the
old man after laying around in his old age. What
have you noticed from this team, because they are certainly
playing great freaking basketball even without Luca out there. Was

it energizing just making that exchange, knowing that that they've
got one of the five three best players in the
league that's going to be suiting up for him starting tonight.
Speaker 6 (19:38):
I mean maybe they, like the fan base, definitely thought
that the franchise was treading water. I mean they're thinking that, Okay,
maybe they're not going to win the championship. They've got
a d And I don't speak any disrespect to ad
because I'll argue, you know how good a player he is,
you know, and I love Max Christy too, like a lot.
He's going to be a really good player there. But

something need to be needed to be infused. And I
think that's exactly right. And when all those dudes are
out of the game and you have you know, Reeves
putting up forty five the other day, but the entire
team playing energized basketball, they're an a roll. What is it?
You guys have probably said it? What is it? Four?
Or five in a row. Here we go five in

a row, nine to ten, eleven or thirteen, thank you
very much. So I think that just speaks volumes. But
most teams when something like this happens, they get energized.
In any sport. I think you see that after a
big trader or even a coaching change. You see it
happen there too, like team will win a bunch of
games and then they'll settle in. So you know, you

got a couple of really ball dominant guys in Lebron
and Luca. Heavy volume shooter in Luca. Obviously he led
last year in points score, but he also led in
shots taken, so he's gonna have the ball. So the
guy that's gonna have to change his game the most obvious,
see I'm sure you guys have mentioned that as Austin Reeves,

who's played really well, almost like an All Star this year,
but now he's going to be playing off the ball,
So he's gonna have to change. And we'll just have
to see how everybody just integrates themselves with Luke coming in.

little quick bonding session over Epcott at disney World because

He's become, you know, a Kobe type of figure, a
Shack you know, these all these superstars that they've had
in the past. Is he going to fill that role
within the next six years?

Well? Yeah, they certainly made the trade with that in mind, obviously.
I mean, and everybody said that. It's like we've all
dissected this thing for eight days and now we're going
to wait to see it. But yeah, everything in the future.
You know, they want to sign him to that extension.
They want to put players around him, you know that
are going to make him successful. I think that's what
they did. And you know, darn it, they did it again.

I mean, look at the Lakers. I mean, when one
superstar is going out, another superstar is coming in and
maybe if you didn't think it was gonna happen, well
here it is. They fell into their lap. Whatever reason
Dallas wanted to trade, they did. And now Luka dantic
is in the purple and golden. We're going to see
it starting tonight, to see it starting to night.

Taught himself the instrument. He called it the mouth organ. Well, yeah,
started playing professionally at fourteen, Want a Baltimore Sun Contest,
kind of like that movie Hairspray, playing a Beethoven minuet.

Ran to New York, away from his family and became
a vaudeville act. Zigfeld hired him for the follies, and
then he started appearing with his harmonica in movies. First
harmonica player ever to play major works written for the instrument,
like Gershwin's La Laby, which we are listening to right now.

A star for decades, made a lot of money, nominated
for an oscar just playing a harmonica. When asked to
about the Beatles in nineteen sixty four, he said that
they possessed little musical talent.

Well, we all have our blind spots, and a man
who's a master of the mouth orgon perhaps.

James West a titan in our industry. P born in Virginia,
father of Pullman. Porter's mom worked at Langley Air Force Base,
one of the hidden figures in the NASA program, fired
for her involvement in the NAACP. So he started working
when he was twelve, installing electrical wire and holmes working

for his cousin. And he loved electricity.

He was going to Hampton Alma Mater of the great
Rick Mahorn, but was conscripted into the army Korean War
and he was in the s wounded, sent back with
a purple heart. When he got back, he enrolled at
Temple to study physics.

Being a black dude, they thought he had it rough
in Korea. How about that?
Speaker 2 (33:19):
Yeah, right, this dude took a shot. I don't know
if it was a gut shot to the arm, if
it grazed in air. What the hell? But hey, purple
heart said. Being a black guy closed some doors to
some pure study groups campus organizations, but had a number
of professors that recognized his talent, his intellect and routinely

assigned him problems, complex problems that even they couldn't sort
out that he could. So when he's in grad school,
Bell labs cubs and snatches him up and he starts
working on the electorate microphone. Did not finish his graduate
schooling because he was too valuable to Bell. They kept
him on full time, and in nineteen sixty two he

invented what he called the foil electric microphone, a higher capacity,
no DC bias. Things that we talk about all the
time here when it comes to what kind.

Of wows we mean, I will allow a lot of
bias and racism around you know. I mean, I feel
like it's just part of being a person of the show,

Ninety five percent of the microphones produced today, including the

years later in a field of technology. They have stood

the test of time. He measured the acoustics of the Philharmonic,
got them all squared away. On top of that, he
developed a microphone that can detect pneumonia and the lugs
and the lungs of children. Here a microphone, says, saving
lives of our children. Our man Jimmy a driving force

behind STEM. He goes on tours to middle schools to
high schools, trying to convince minority and underprivileged kids to
chase careers in science in technology, that we're short on
jobs across the board. We need more math, we need
more engineering. He has over two hundred and fifty patents.
He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

He has been awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation,
and in nineteen ninety nine he was inducted into the
Inventor's Hall of Fame. Because of these cylinders in which
we are currently speaking into our man, Jimmy West Happy
ninety four.
