Heights man Rudolph has Mail Carrier reads an article in
the nineteen thirties about the impending popularity of the avocado.
So he took his savings. He borrowed some more money
from family, bought an acre and a half of land

(03:50):
with a few avocado trees and Lahabra Heights. They were
fuerte trees. They were a bit sickly. He had to
crossbreed them with a few different seeds. Almost gave up
until Luther Burbank said, now stick with it. I like
where this is going, Doctor Burbank, exactly right, he did,
and on their first harvest they realized his avocado, the

(04:13):
has avocado, was far superior to the fuerte, grew faster,
it tasted better, it produced more fruit. The haas avocado
was born, and today ninety five percent of California avocados
are has Avocado's a postman who chased his dream and
gave us healthy fat.

Speaker 5 (04:37):
It is time of the It's time of the quick.
As to the ms cuickets, come make it quick, y'all.
Super Bowl fifty nine was add that's what it says
right here.

Speaker 3 (04:57):
Super Bowl fifty nine stuck.

Speaker 4 (05:00):
TVA, says guy DoD.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
That's the other guy.

Speaker 4 (05:04):
You were a disgrace.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
I did get an Instagram DM that said the show
before ours was able to dissect some things they found interesting,
Oh super Bowl. Well, included was what did you think
of the commercials? Particularly how much do you think Seal
made for the commercial he did? That sounds interesting? Yeah,

(05:28):
that was their topic today. That was one and then
the other one better than being you Jack.

Speaker 6 (05:33):
Really.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
The other one was do you think we'll ever see
a Super Bowl on a streaming platform? That was another segment.

Speaker 5 (05:42):
Oh there was a fight over that I heard. Well,
there was a heated debate.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
You know, and there's certain things that we just don't
uss on this show because it would just be too
fiery grace debate.

Speaker 4 (05:53):
Yeah, you're right, you're right.

Speaker 5 (05:54):
Well, unless you like watching the Chiefs losing Tennis Swift
get bored.

Speaker 3 (06:00):
Oh that's a direct look.

Speaker 4 (06:02):
I'm just gonna read Kate's script.

Speaker 5 (06:04):
It says super Bowl fifty nine was a dud dot
dot dot dot unless you liked watching Chiefs the Chiefs
lose and Taylor Swift get boot and ask the.

Speaker 4 (06:12):
People around her in the suite what's going.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
On going on? I am sna Is like me.

Speaker 5 (06:21):
Nobody likes Aaron Rodgers in the New York anymore or
the chants. They're reportedly parton ways with Aaron Rodgers Wood.
He said no more. He was in New York last
week and the team informed him that he isn't in
their plans for twenty twenty five, and there is already
a betting line to see where he ends up next season.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
The Raiders oh please.

Speaker 5 (06:42):
With Pete Carroll are the favorites, followed by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
I like that they made him fly out, that he
thought that, you know what, I'm gonna fly out. We're
gonna yeah, They're gonna pick up on his own dimes
and on my own dime. I'm gonna hang out. It's
gonna be great.

Speaker 3 (06:57):
Me and Aaron Glenn and Woody hey Wood.

Speaker 4 (06:59):
What's up?

Speaker 6 (06:59):
Yeah? Year out?

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Now, get back on the plane and get the hell
out of here. Oh, the Lakers a bitch. The Lakers
will play tonight and we will talk to Billy Mack
then the very next segment about it. They've won five
in a row.

Speaker 5 (07:11):
They host a Utah Jazz tonight and Luca makes his
Laker debut. He hasn't even played in a game yet,
and he's already announced that he's donating five hundred thousand
dollars to the fire relief and playgrounds to be rebuilt
for kids in the affected areas. And they're still waiting
for Lebron James at the Place Pizza from freaking five

(07:31):
years ago.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
That hasn't even taken a shot yet was traded. Was
emotional ripped from his habitat his Dallas Metroplex foundation.

Speaker 5 (07:41):
It's like a fish getting caught, just yanked out of
the water.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
Right and thrown into an aquarium with that crazy skeleton
and a pirate as a pirate at the Captain's wheel.
And yet five hundred thousand dollars donated by Luca to
the fire relief.

Speaker 3 (07:57):
How about that?

Speaker 2 (07:57):
And that's a guy that just lost one hundred and
thirty millions and salary because he can't get the Supermax Incredible.

Speaker 5 (08:04):
Clippers are twenty nine and twenty three. They're off until
Wednesday when they host Agriz. They have two games before
the All Star Break. Coward Cowards, pitchers and catchers have
reported to Campbell back who's back?

Speaker 4 (08:20):
Campbell Back?

Speaker 5 (08:21):
First full team workount is Saturday. David Vasse joined us
just the last segment, and we talked about Keik, and
we talked about Zayidi, and we talked about his upcoming
trip to Japan and that everybody's excited about it. The
first game for US will be February twentieth on I seventy.
That's coming up.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
Yeah, I saw a bunch of videos as it's pitchers
and catchers right now. They'll get things rolling on Saturday
with the position players in the first full spring training workout,
but pitchers and catchers. Turns out their DH is also
a pitcher, and show Hey was out there.

Speaker 3 (08:54):
What do you think we're going to see you on
the backfields throwing Andrew?

Speaker 7 (08:58):
What about people that are coming out to Keba Back,
what are they gonna be able to put that on
their video?

Speaker 2 (09:01):
Well, the Dodgers did. The Dodgers posted a video of
show Hey throwing from the mound today at Camelback Ranch.

Speaker 5 (09:10):
Keyk Hernandez is coming back to the Dodgers put it
out there on social media yesterday before kickoff to the
Super Bowl, stealing the thunder from the Big Game and Fox,
which is unfortunate.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
You could argue that Jay Glazer stole the thunder of
the Super Bowl with Aaron rodd Zoopich. Yeah, like that
was talked about more than the Super Bowl because everybody
hates Aaron Rodgers so much. The idea that he flew
out there on his own dime to be told, yeah,
we're not bringing it back, see you later, give us
your key card.

Speaker 3 (09:37):
All right, great talk.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
Well, we keep saying that UCLA they are eighteen and
six overall. They are nine and four in the Big ten.
They have won seven in a row. They are not
in the top ten, and they are in the other
receiving votes category. They're not in the top twenty five
others receiving votes. Make cron Bruins play at Illinois tomorrow.

(10:02):
It is a five pm tip. You'll hear it right
here on AM five to seventy and UCLA apparently hit
by the flu bug last week. Here is Mick after
that dominant win over Penn State on Saturday.

Speaker 7 (10:13):
Josh asked me forty game trace about preparation as well.
I wish I could tell you. I mean, I don't know,
you know, when we woke up today, I didn't know
who was coaching, and I didn't know if four guys
were playing.

Speaker 4 (10:24):
Right. Wow.

Speaker 2 (10:27):
You look at the Ken Pom, you know, because we
are round ball, amateur roundball, the Sionados. The Ken Pom
rankings have UCLA at twenty five net number eight defensively,
a top ten defensive team. They're ranking climbing offensively at
fifty one, so firmly in the tournament. Looks like probably

(10:48):
a five, six, seven seed right now. But a little
bit agreed just after the big victory over Michigan State
for their seventh in a row.

Speaker 5 (10:56):
Not for sure, I thought for sure, for sure, I
thought maybe even top ten, right sure. After originally committing
to the field at Torrey Pines, Tiger Woods has withdrawn
from the twenty twenty five Genesis Invitational, the event he
is hosted in California since twenty twenty. The fifteen time
major champion posted on social media that he tried his

(11:17):
best to prepare for the tournament but is still processing
the death of his mother.

Speaker 3 (11:23):
Ah, that's right. Forgot about that well.

Speaker 5 (11:25):
I mean, Matt thought it was about his back that
made me come back to the Genesis.

Speaker 4 (11:32):
I mean me come back. I mean you come back.
How's Geeter going to hold it together? Matt?

Speaker 3 (11:38):
I mean he's going to be farting rainbows? He was.

Speaker 2 (11:41):
He was already pretty excited on I was watching the
game Saturday, and when they tossed it back to the studio,
he was, yeah, he was bouncy. He was like, oh yeah,
I got Robert and Robert over here, I got James
right here, look at pres right there, and Ali's somewhere
over there, man, and we're all just freaking man. It's
the best man how about that, Austin Reevez Man, how

(12:03):
about that? So I would assume it's going to be
more of that, right, I mean, it's a good time
to be Geeter. That'd be a lot of lean years
there for Geeter last half decade. Really if you think
about it.

Speaker 5 (12:14):
Well, I mean, it just depends you like being nailed
by the king or not. And it sounds like you
did well, No King, Maybe it was like sleeping with
the enemy where he had to smile and you know,
Lebron was looking at him like Julia Roberts had to smile. Anyway,

(12:36):
We'll be back with Billy Mack, somebody who's equally as
boner out tonight for the Lakers.

Speaker 4 (12:43):
Yeah, Billy Mack calling the game tonight, Luca's debut.

Speaker 2 (12:54):
Petro some money A and five seventy LA Sports. We
are alive everywhere on the iHeartRadio app going till seven pm.
David going to be along with off season Slash Pitchers
and Catchers Slash. Spring Training is upon us Dodger Talk
seven pm. Is the first spring training game here on
A five seventy LA Sports is just under two weeks away,

(13:14):
just over a week away. February twentieth, as a matter
of fact, ten days from.

Speaker 5 (13:18):
Now, Well Matt joining us right now on the Spectrum
Sportsnet wave this man riding the hills and gullies of
the Laker the mid Ocean like he's on a zodiac
with grace and beauty. Luka doncicch debuts tonight. Billy Mack

(13:45):
will be on the aforementioned Spectrum Sportsnet with Stu. Stu
will be in a good mood. There's nobody like Billy Mack,
his orange skin, his disarming way, beloved all the way
from the tip of Orange County to the crack of Silmar.

Speaker 4 (14:06):
The one and only Bill mcdond.

Speaker 5 (14:09):
On your Southern California Too to deal a celebrity hotline
on a big night for the Lakers, Luka Doncic's debut.

Speaker 4 (14:16):
Oh, I bet he's freaking out, Billy. I bet you're
freaking out.

Speaker 6 (14:21):
Man. Wait, wait, wait, I'm freaking out of Luca's freaking out.

Speaker 3 (14:24):
Now you're freaking out, Billy, sleep last night?

Speaker 6 (14:27):
You do it?

Speaker 4 (14:27):
Okay, Billy, You're gonna be all right.

Speaker 6 (14:29):
Man. I figured you'd be calling something. Just told me.

Speaker 3 (14:34):
I haven't.

Speaker 6 (14:36):
I haven't heard from him in a while. Somebody's gonna
dial me up from pet Chosen money and you don't
have to answer this, but I trust that your families
are well. I hope they are well. That's the first
thing I wanted to say, right.

Speaker 5 (14:49):
Pretty sure, we're all doing We're all doing okay, little
beat up. You know from the super Bowl. You know,
it's a long night for everybody. A lot of cheese,
a lot of drinking, a lot of a seven layer dip,
a lot of acting like an expert. You know, I'm
bound wake up in the morning. Did I really say that?
But we love you, Billy, And I mean you've been

(15:09):
through a lot here, I mean, from Coe's eighty one
point game that we always talk about to uh yeah,
to everything in between. What is this compared to that?
Because man, people seem to be excited.

Speaker 6 (15:24):
Yeah, that's exactly what I was going to say. First
of all, this trade has been dissected to death. So
all I want to do is see what it looks like, right,
I mean, at this point, it's been over a week,
so let's take the court and see what happens. So
two things, And I'm sure I'm just reiterating what you said.
Number one. I mean, it's just it was the biggest
shock trade ever, I mean in basketball and one of

(15:48):
them in sports. And you're right, the fan base is
losing their collective.

Speaker 3 (15:53):
Minds right now.

Speaker 6 (15:56):
I mean, they're pretty excited. They're pretty excited. So let's
just goin to put him out, roll the ball out
there and see what hel b J and the Don
look like together when they're on the court.

Speaker 4 (16:08):
The Don, the Dog, I like it.

Speaker 3 (16:13):
I like it too. I like it too, the fresh snow.

Speaker 4 (16:16):
But it's pretty good.

Speaker 2 (16:17):
Ahead, bring fresh snow back from the Don. Let's go,
let's just get him back.

Speaker 3 (16:22):
There's the Dog with some fresh snow.

Speaker 6 (16:24):
Yeah, yeah, tonight.

Speaker 2 (16:27):
Yeah for you guys, we'll hey, uh Billy. There's like
when we had the the Bengals in town to play
the Chargers this year, and pretty much everybody that that
works is like, look, it's our favorite player to watch.
Everybody loves watching Joe Burrow. It's just fun to watch
that guy quarterback of football team. I would assume you
feel the same way about Luca. What what can you

(16:49):
say about the many times you've you've called games where
Luca was taken on the Lakers, the way that he plays,
and how would you describe maybe to casual fans that
don't watch a lot of basketball. Why everybody is losing,
as you said, their collective minds over the fact that
he's now on the Lakers.

Speaker 6 (17:07):
Yeah, I mean the deal with Luca is and you know,
other than the games Matt that I've done with him
in the lineup, and that's like just about every time
he's played obviously in the last six or seven years.
You know, it's not like I see him for a
full game. Like I sit down and watch a Mad's
game on television. You know, you see the highlights because

(17:28):
everybody now we live with highlights, so we get to
see it. Here's the deal about Luca. I mean, he
could drop literally fifty to sixty at any time, and
the vision with his passing, he'll he'll make some passes
that are just you know, magical type passes and he's
gonna readout er two. You know a lot of people
say stuff about his defense. The Dallas announcers swears, they

(17:51):
swear he plays decent defense. We'll see what's that follow.

Speaker 4 (17:57):
Follow Oil says, Yeah, for sure, you know.

Speaker 6 (18:02):
He has you know what, Followo has one of those
voices that I don't have. You know, you can and
here's the funny thing. When you're when you're in Dallas
doing a game, Mark is literally literally you guys right
next to me to me, oh, and he cuts through
our telecast so big time.

Speaker 3 (18:21):
And then you guys hear that.

Speaker 6 (18:24):
And they probably can I know what it is, but
you know, so, you know, anybody who talked to with
Dallas says, yeah, it's good enough because his offense is
going to offset anything else that happens in that respect.
But just you're right, Matt, from the excitement standpoint, because
there's only a few players in basketball for for you know,
for the history of the game that can do some

(18:46):
things that really can excite the fan base and excite
fellow players. And one of them is Luca Dacs. So
we'll see what happened tonight.

Speaker 2 (18:53):
When you say fellow players, Billy and you know what,
whatever follow He might have a big voice, but he
ain't got the California cool. I freaking building out, No.

Speaker 6 (19:01):
Thank you, Maddie.

Speaker 4 (19:02):
What about cool?

Speaker 2 (19:05):
We were kind of talking about the last week Lebron
James following the trade, kind of being that old dog
when a puppy shows up all of a sudden, he
gets a little bit more excited. He wants to start
playing ball again, want to start running around with the
old man after laying around in his old age. What
have you noticed from this team, because they are certainly
playing great freaking basketball even without Luca out there. Was

(19:28):
it energizing just making that exchange, knowing that that they've
got one of the five three best players in the
league that's going to be suiting up for him starting tonight.

Speaker 6 (19:38):
I mean maybe they, like the fan base, definitely thought
that the franchise was treading water. I mean they're thinking that, Okay,
maybe they're not going to win the championship. They've got
a d And I don't speak any disrespect to ad
because I'll argue, you know how good a player he is,
you know, and I love Max Christy too, like a lot.
He's going to be a really good player there. But

(20:00):
something need to be needed to be infused. And I
think that's exactly right. And when all those dudes are
out of the game and you have you know, Reeves
putting up forty five the other day, but the entire
team playing energized basketball, they're an a roll. What is it?
You guys have probably said it? What is it? Four?
Or five in a row. Here we go five in

(20:21):
a row, nine to ten, eleven or thirteen, thank you
very much. So I think that just speaks volumes. But
most teams when something like this happens, they get energized.
In any sport. I think you see that after a
big trader or even a coaching change. You see it
happen there too, like team will win a bunch of
games and then they'll settle in. So you know, you

(20:42):
got a couple of really ball dominant guys in Lebron
and Luca. Heavy volume shooter in Luca. Obviously he led
last year in points score, but he also led in
shots taken, so he's gonna have the ball. So the
guy that's gonna have to change his game the most obvious,
see I'm sure you guys have mentioned that as Austin Reeves,

(21:03):
who's played really well, almost like an All Star this year,
but now he's going to be playing off the ball,
So he's gonna have to change. And we'll just have
to see how everybody just integrates themselves with Luke coming in.

Speaker 5 (21:12):
Here are to the people, Bill McDonald joining us. I
didn't need him to read the Lakers record like he's
doing a Jack in a Box commercial, But that's what
you get, drop.

Speaker 4 (21:20):
From the box.

Speaker 6 (21:29):
I was looking at that, going, do I really need
to say that? Do I really need to you know?
But I said, but no, I really need to say
jack in the box. I do need to say that. Yeah,
that's for sure. Not the records. You can go ahead.

Speaker 4 (21:40):
Is JJ Reddick cool to you?

Speaker 6 (21:43):
We don't talk much, and that's because he's not being
cool to me.

Speaker 2 (21:46):
That's all right, the boss don't talk as.

Speaker 3 (21:55):
We don't talk, don't die.

Speaker 6 (21:58):
I mean he came in. I remember when he went well,
when he was playing with like the clippers and stuff,
we didn't converse. And then when he was he was
doing National TV, you know, pleasant trees, you know, Hi,
how you doing that kind of stuff? And he's cool.
But this year, you know, he's I'll talk a little
bit more to the assistant coaches because I've known Scotti
Brooks for a long time. I've known Scotty for a while,

(22:20):
so I will interact with him and and and Nate
a little bit more. But no, JJ has been great.
You know what, JJ and I You're gonna laugh, you guys,
all right, here we go. JJ and I had a
little quick bonding session over Epcott at disney World because
there's a ride there, Guardians of the Galaxy ride that

(22:40):
is awesome. By the way, if any people like go
to amusement parks and you go down there with your family,
do the do the Guardians of the Galaxy ride at Epcott.
And he freaking loves it. And he took his whole
family family down there. What what? Yeah, No, he took
a whole only down there. He's got a couple of

(23:01):
boys and stuff, and he just couldn't say enough about it.
Ryan Ruco of Yestian said, go ask him about it,
gol ask him about it, because he couldn't stop talking
about it. So I went and I asked him, and
he was just laughing. But Jenkin's cool. He's very intense.
He's an intense dude. You know. He wants to win games.
But he loves golf. He loves golf. Maddie loves golf.

Speaker 3 (23:22):
Now there you go.

Speaker 2 (23:23):
I see if he loads his clubs on the plane
when you guys hit the road, he can be like
a Mike McCoy. Hey, last thing from me. Billy has
has stull embraced, has still embraced the nickname Vandalorian for Vanderbilt.

Speaker 6 (23:39):
You know what, I kind of went away from it.

Speaker 3 (23:42):
No, why what.

Speaker 6 (23:44):
What Listen, I did say it, I did say it
the other day, but the actual show, I mean, did
I have a new season? I mean it was like
two three years ago, So I don't you know, Stu
hates nicknames to begin with, He's not. But I think
I can slip the doll ask him. I think I
can the.

Speaker 4 (24:02):
King the done stud. Do you like that?

Speaker 5 (24:04):
No, No, I don't Jack in the box. I'm very
agree with you. Billy h It's gonna be a hell
of a night. And Billy, do you think just last
thing real quick? I have an honest question. Uh, you
know we're having a conversation God Willing. In seven years
are we talking about? You know, Luca's breaking this record.

(24:25):
Luca's breaking that record. Look what he's done for the Lakers.
He's become, you know, a Kobe type of figure, a
Shack you know, these all these superstars that they've had
in the past. Is he going to fill that role
within the next six years?

Speaker 6 (24:39):
Well? Yeah, they certainly made the trade with that in mind, obviously.
I mean, and everybody said that. It's like we've all
dissected this thing for eight days and now we're going
to wait to see it. But yeah, everything in the future.
You know, they want to sign him to that extension.
They want to put players around him, you know that
are going to make him successful. I think that's what
they did. And you know, darn it, they did it again.

(25:00):
I mean, look at the Lakers. I mean, when one
superstar is going out, another superstar is coming in and
maybe if you didn't think it was gonna happen, well
here it is. They fell into their lap. Whatever reason
Dallas wanted to trade, they did. And now Luka dantic
is in the purple and golden. We're going to see
it starting tonight, to see it starting to night.

Speaker 2 (25:21):
Yeah, so many, so many ways to incorporate the dawn,
the dawn of the dawn, don King, I mean you
can do only in America.

Speaker 3 (25:32):
Don King, Like my god, the possibilities tonight. Can't wait
to to heres the.

Speaker 6 (25:37):
Thing I've opened. I've now opened that door for you
guys that can do it whenever you want. Also, I
mean it's funny some of the players. Calm, I know,
I know, I know, shush up.

Speaker 4 (25:57):
Really yeah, rong, God, we love you.

Speaker 5 (26:06):
Billy, I have a great call tonight, man, and uh,
you're the absolute hero to the people single handedly.

Speaker 4 (26:12):
You're going to bring the Lakers back with the Dawn.

Speaker 6 (26:15):
That's exactly right. It's exactly what I'm doing.

Speaker 4 (26:17):
See you guys, There goes Bill McDonald.

Speaker 5 (26:20):
Will be right back with the deador Live guy, Bertie.
Thanks for listening, everybody, and a big thank you to
David Vasse who has Dodger Talk and the very next
segment an hour of that, and a big thank you

(26:40):
to Brady Quinn from Fox Sports Radio and Big Fox,
and of course Bill McDonald.

Speaker 3 (26:47):
A very exciting night tonight, Matt.

Speaker 4 (26:53):
Yeah, you know what.

Speaker 2 (26:54):
Good on Billy Mack and Geeter and the crew for
having the game to them selves as they tried to
snatch up that Saturday podcast against the Pacers.

Speaker 5 (27:04):
Ruined the local broadcast, Matt. They've taken all the teeth
out of the local broadcast.

Speaker 2 (27:09):
So good for them for getting it tonight instead of
Saturday and having the Luca debut there on Spectrum with
our friends James Worthy, Robert Ory will not be there, Geeter,
Ali Prez and of course Billy mackin the man we
love most too. It's gonna be a great watch tonight,
no doubt.

Speaker 4 (27:29):
Don't forget about old sawd Off Jones.

Speaker 2 (27:32):
Yes, and old sawed off shoe, old tiny hands Tim.
Sorry Tim, I shouldn't said old tiny hands.

Speaker 3 (27:42):
Tom.

Speaker 4 (27:43):
There we go live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 5 (27:47):
You can follow our show and listen to the show
on demand podcast. The show tomorrow will be flexing back
two to four thirty Schallert because UCLA, Illinois tip off
at five. This has been scheduled talk on the Petros

(28:07):
and Money Show on.

Speaker 2 (28:08):
Segel step out about b B.

Speaker 5 (28:14):
To b B B as we have often discussed Matt
for your dead guy birthday in the day, we are
your harmonica show of record.

Speaker 4 (28:23):
Not we love the mouth harp, whether it's Tooths.

Speaker 5 (28:27):
Theelman's or Stevie Wonder or Bob Dylan or old Yanni
Popper with his cane. But what about a REALO G Matt,
somebody that predates all them dudes? Larry Adler would be
one hundred and eleven years old today.

Speaker 4 (28:44):
Adler is known as the greatest harmonica.

Speaker 3 (28:49):
Player of all time. Oh how about that?

Speaker 5 (28:53):
Adler is from the old Bay dusted land of Baltimore.
He's Jewish, he went to Baltimore's Go Black Knights. My
guy got a natty bow in his lap out.

Speaker 6 (29:05):
He's just like.

Speaker 5 (29:07):
Taught himself the instrument. He called it the mouth organ. Well, yeah,
started playing professionally at fourteen, Want a Baltimore Sun Contest,
kind of like that movie Hairspray, playing a Beethoven minuet.

(29:28):
Ran to New York, away from his family and became
a vaudeville act. Zigfeld hired him for the follies, and
then he started appearing with his harmonica in movies. First
harmonica player ever to play major works written for the instrument,
like Gershwin's La Laby, which we are listening to right now.

(29:52):
A star for decades, made a lot of money, nominated
for an oscar just playing a harmonica. When asked to
about the Beatles in nineteen sixty four, he said that
they possessed little musical talent.

Speaker 2 (30:05):
Well, we all have our blind spots, and a man
who's a master of the mouth orgon perhaps.

Speaker 4 (30:12):
Had bad one.

Speaker 5 (30:13):
Well, I mean, you know, guys, they don't have any
heart major artists. He did get blacklisted for being a comedy,
but still worked. There was another blind spot there, man capitalism,
But He played US shows for Jack Benny and did
all kinds of stuff like that. So he was also
a critic, a food critic for Harper's magazine. My harmonica

(30:39):
tape better than this Stroganoff. His brother was also a
harmonica star, Jerry Adler, but not as big as Larry Adler.
He's known for his Gershwin. He made a whole Gershwin
album with Elton John's on there, Bond jovis on there,
Pete Gabriel's on there, Shares on there, Robert Palmer, God

(31:04):
Rest of your Soul is on there, Elvis Costello is
on there, and Carly Simon's on there. And that was
problematic because during the recording session Carly Simon swallowed eight
of his harmonica.

Speaker 4 (31:17):
Yeah, so that come and then pooped about.

Speaker 5 (31:24):
He collaborated with many others like Gates's favorite guy Sting.

Speaker 4 (31:28):
What Sting there.

Speaker 2 (31:33):
He's an exceptional talent, and he was coming off of
a throat injury, by the way, he had still got
up there and performed. Kate's read that article about why
the voice was maybe a little compromise. Yeah, Kates still
wanted to deliver for the fire Aid concerts.

Speaker 5 (31:48):
What kind of motion are you making with your arm
and mouth there you're saying is his throat was hurt
because of why what are you saying? Kate's sit in
a different mouth?

Speaker 3 (31:57):
Organ?

Speaker 5 (31:57):
You think he was smoking a certain kind of firepole
out there for the LAFD. Anyway, Adler was a very
big star in the UK as well as here, a
wonderful player.

Speaker 3 (32:12):
They probably didn't appreciate the Beatles commentary.

Speaker 5 (32:15):
You know what I think, You know, the high society
was above it. They were above the you know, the
Beatles were very controversial. Matt running that freaking chick out
there screaming at Yellen cause of trouble.

Speaker 2 (32:27):
All right, Matt, I got a happy ninety fourth to
James West a titan in our industry. P born in Virginia,
father of Pullman. Porter's mom worked at Langley Air Force Base,
one of the hidden figures in the NASA program, fired
for her involvement in the NAACP. So he started working
when he was twelve, installing electrical wire and holmes working

(32:50):
for his cousin. And he loved electricity.

Speaker 4 (32:55):
Like our hero Westinghouse, you know, Matt, just like that.

Speaker 2 (33:00):
He was going to Hampton Alma Mater of the great
Rick Mahorn, but was conscripted into the army Korean War
and he was in the s wounded, sent back with
a purple heart. When he got back, he enrolled at
Temple to study physics.

Speaker 4 (33:15):
Being a black dude, they thought he had it rough
in Korea. How about that?

Speaker 2 (33:19):
Yeah, right, this dude took a shot. I don't know
if it was a gut shot to the arm, if
it grazed in air. What the hell? But hey, purple
heart said. Being a black guy closed some doors to
some pure study groups campus organizations, but had a number
of professors that recognized his talent, his intellect and routinely

(33:39):
assigned him problems, complex problems that even they couldn't sort
out that he could. So when he's in grad school,
Bell labs cubs and snatches him up and he starts
working on the electorate microphone. Did not finish his graduate
schooling because he was too valuable to Bell. They kept
him on full time, and in nineteen sixty two he

(34:02):
invented what he called the foil electric microphone, a higher capacity,
no DC bias. Things that we talk about all the
time here when it comes to what kind.

Speaker 5 (34:13):
Of wows we mean, I will allow a lot of
bias and racism around you know. I mean, I feel
like it's just part of being a person of the show,
you know. Yeah, yeah, Racist Tuesday and all that. But
I will not I will not tolerate any DC bias
around here.

Speaker 3 (34:31):
His microphone.

Speaker 2 (34:32):
Ninety five percent of the microphones produced today, including the
ones we are speaking into right now, along with your phone, baby, monitors,
hearing aids, pretty much every audio recording device, are foil
electric microphones. And that's what this dude invented sixty three
years later in a field of technology. They have stood

(34:52):
the test of time. He measured the acoustics of the Philharmonic,
got them all squared away. On top of that, he
developed a microphone that can detect pneumonia and the lugs
and the lungs of children. Here a microphone, says, saving
lives of our children. Our man Jimmy a driving force

(35:13):
behind STEM. He goes on tours to middle schools to
high schools, trying to convince minority and underprivileged kids to
chase careers in science in technology, that we're short on
jobs across the board. We need more math, we need
more engineering. He has over two hundred and fifty patents.
He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

(35:34):
He has been awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation,
and in nineteen ninety nine he was inducted into the
Inventor's Hall of Fame. Because of these cylinders in which
we are currently speaking into our man, Jimmy West Happy
ninety four.

Speaker 5 (35:54):
UCLA will play a School of Engineers tomorrow Illinois tip
Off five.

Speaker 4 (36:00):
Matt and I will.

Speaker 5 (36:01):
Start at two two to four thirty show David Passe
coming up back with Dodger. Talk a lot to talk about.

Speaker 4 (36:11):
Thanks for listening. To make sure you podcast or stream
the show live on the iHeartRadio app. It's been a
big thing. You to Ronnie Possio and Tim Kings
