needs to be serious conversations about not playing Texas Tech
in any sports. This is not about Texas Tech. It

is about protecting our own locker room. We cannot in
good conscience put our student athletes on a field where
the competitive integrity of the contest is compromised and overridden

I'm good? Always going to hear your voice. You know
you called the highlight of my football career. You were
on the telecast for my three yard rushing at the
USC in two thousand and seven. Really it's a memory
into my mind. Yeah, whenever he does YouTube. But oh yeah,
I got a three yard pitch dynastition. You were doing
the game. You were like, oh, I know this is
supposed to happen right now. This is Jeff Jeff Schwartz.

Oh wow, Well that's wonderful. I didn't I didn't know that, Jeff.

But you know, uh, you know how the well of
football memories goes. It's deep and low. Yeah, you got
a lot of that. You got a lot of that going.
But I mean I remember when Rick new Heisel got
in trouble for filling out a bracket. I remember what

the climate was about gambling when I started broadcasting. You know,
when you were a player, It's just something we didn't
deal with at all. That's changed a great deal. But
I saw that you had an immediate reaction to the
soresby situation. What do you think it means?
Speaker 4 (17:40):
We got to be able to follow some rules in
the country, right, like we got to be able to
do it. I understand the rule law seems to be
slipping away by the day. Right, I get it. I
follow politics. We all sort of follow it, like we
know it's sort of going away. But even when you
have a steadfast rule, you cannot bet on the team

that you are playing for. Like it said, block and white,
if it comes right, it doesn't matter if you're playing
in the game, not playing the game, red shirting, stinging
at home, sitting with your parents' house at the beach,
because you know you cannot gamble on the team you
are playing for. And there's many good reasons for that. Right,
even if you're not playing the game, you might have
(18:22):
to infinite information. Okay, well that's that's you know. Maybe
that helps move doesn't helped. But the fact is is
that once you start betting on your team, it's always
gonna lead to more, right, It's gonna lead to more
things that the center. You open the door to allowing
this to happen. It allows more the fairest things to happen, right,
and the door should always stay shut here, I think
(18:44):
we can be it's very logical to say, hey, you're
an into double a football player. You can bet on
in DOUAA baseball, you bet on basketball, you bet on NFL,
you bet on on whatever you want, Baseball, all the
World Series, whatever you want. Just don't bet on the
game you're in. I think that's a very simple rule
to follow. There's many integrity reasons for that. Like even

moving forward now, when you watch Saxa Tech play, one
thing stots me is ever fixing a game has never
gonna do to that. He's not doing that on that's
ever gonna happen. But every time you watch sax A
tax play, you're gonna be thinking about him gambling on
the sport of football. Right, It's naturally gonna happen. It's
gonna be talked about. And as sports fans, I'm a
sports fan. I'm a sports fan long before playing in

the NFL. Still a sports fan. Now, you want and
have to believe that the games are being played for
the right reasons, right, you know, we got game three
tonight the finals. Great serious, so far right, and imagine
watching that game going one of the players maybe gambling
off the game right now. You can't do it. You
can't do as a sports fan. And so I just
(19:48):
find this ruling very disheartening because he admitted he broke
a rule. Yeah I gamble on my team, and Joe's like, yeah,
well I guess it doesn't really matter and you can
play anyways. I just think it's that message to send.
It now opened up the door for more gambling to
happen on a sport from players that are currently playing.
(20:08):
And do you think it's a really miss guy? They're
ruled it helping it's.
Speaker 3 (20:11):
Overturned, you know, I know it's I've talked about Congress
and the NCAA wants then to get involved that they
don't want to get involved. It's the last thing they
want to deal with is this sort of stuff. So
what would be their path to try to getting this
figured out? I mean is this where shouldnt shouldn't Brett
Rmark have something to do with this? I mean, isn't
this where a conference commissioner comes in and says, yeah,

whatever with your judge, don't care. We can't have this.
This just is a bad look for our conference to
have this guy out there playing football.
Speaker 2 (20:40):

Opponents, you know, school presidents of the other team saying
we refuse to play a guy that spent ninety k
on freaking gambling sports gambling, Like what do you think
is the what are the paths for them to try
to write this one thing really closely?
Speaker 4 (20:57):
The money the ninety case sounds like a lot. It's
it's actually right, you know, it's not like you can
like you know, it's not like he didn't win or
lose ninety thousand dollars, Like you can deposit ten thousand
dollars int your talent and over the lifetime ninety thousand
dollars and you don't take any money in or out,
(21:17):
Like that's that could happen, right, Like I think that
the number sounds sallacious. The problem he's betting on his
own freaking team is that that's the problem. And the
problem is like he's clearly has in an addition to
her when he's betting live strike props at baseball games,
like a yeah, a lot, Like I'm not betting on
whether it's a ball or striking a baseball game. I'd
go too, like, that's you know, that's a problem. As
(21:39):
far as the question you asked, your mustn't do nothing
about it? What's you go? It's just this is this
is their cash twer. Now it's a playoff team. We're
gonna do anything about He's gonna say the courts made
their rule and we respect the decision of the courts.
You know, Jebo has no chief left. I mean if they,
if they did, they would say, okay, well, any game
he plays in, we're going to vacate that that wins

of you guys, right because he broke the roles he
broke through. The problem is to go to court and lose.
I mean, anyways, look every single case, I think the
Alabama one of the professional basketball players trying to play
Alabama actually won that case. They've lost everything else. And
you know, nobody should say, hey man, we're not gonna
if you play this year, We're going to vacate your wins.

And maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. You know, teams
not scheduling them. I mean, look, big twelve teams have
to schedule, Like what are they gonna do? It is
forfeit the game. But you know it's a lot of
tough talk. Maybe their non conference slate, you cast themselves
an opportunity to talk about them scheduling USC find itself
fun that USC would schedule them, and just like not
the Notre Dame thing, which is you know, Tetos is

where is very big on that, like you know Central
Texas Tech, but not not Notre Dame. Still like you know,
maybe they lose a chance to schedule that. I saw
something where the softball team it's been tough for them
to schedule non preference games and still drinking wrong. They
just paid a lot of money for for one of
their pitchers, multiple their pitchers. But I think it's a
lot of tough talk, like we're gonna schedule you anymore, Well,

you're gonna forfeit the game if you're a big twelve
team and doesn't want to schedule Texas Tech. I mean,
the answer a guest is n double a just saying okay, fine,
like you want to play, well, then you're you're suspended
or you're you know, we're gonna suspend you longer, or
we're gonna do this or that to your team. Otherwise
nothing and look, they don't really know. People think this
is going to lead to some reform. No, no, it's
(23:26):
not gonna lead to the building up passing that build
the bill stinks. Well, he's not gonna get you a
support that bill. Look, I'm sure someone will call in
and tell me I'm wrong. But like the government Cappy
rages for a private citizen, like a non government job too.

That in our country, right in this situation, they want
to cap the wages of college football players. Like maybe
you could argue that Derek at state universities and maybe
that's your way to make that work. But they'll all
say universities they're private schools too. Like the idea that
the government's gonna cap someone's wages killsburgh on Americans. Like
the bill's never gonna pass, is no chance to pass.

Maybe there's a fuck the bargaining things set aside for gambling,
you sign your starship paperwork. Part of that is you
can't get with Jordy can't do it. Jordy broke the rules. Oh,
I don't know what the answer is.

this show, Matt that not since Vicksburg has there been
such a siege on Mississis. This man's name auc Thomas J.
Higgins would have been one hundred and ninety five years
old today from Huntington, Quebec, which is I believe the

Huntington Beach of Canada. I've heard that. Yeah, big surf
events and a lot of stuff.

Huge overheads, crazy out there.
Speaker 2 (28:23):
You gotta pay for parkin. He ended up in Illinois,
so an American and was a private in company d
of the ninety ninth Illinois enrolled in the Army of
Tennessee with Ulysses S. Grant when they besieged the Confederate

stronghold of Vicksburg, Mississippi, which was important because Mississippi controlled
the Mississippi River. Vicksburg in particular was a big port
for it, and if you controlled the Mississippi River, you
could control a lot of the western front of the war.
The Father of Waters, as it was referred to by
Abraham Lincoln. Anyway, the seed started on May eighteenth, eighteen
(29:07):
sixty three, but on the twenty second, Grant launched a
small probing assault on the port town and our guy
Higgins volunteered to act as the color bearer to hold
the American flag like Rick Monday, as the previous one
(29:27):
was wounded, and they ran into the second Texas Infantry
Regiment matt As. You know, the Texas soldiers were pretty
famous in the Civil War pre nil. They fought viciously.
Now that you give them the nil, you know something
to live for. Anyway, the Texans repulsed the Union pretty quickly,
(29:54):
but he didn't seem to hear or just got super
brave and left his army with the Colors after the
advance was stopped and continued the advance toward the Confederate lines.
No more, no less than one hundred men took deliberate
aim right at Higgins, fired at him point blank, and
(30:16):
yet he was not hit. Very pulp fiction like moment
active DoD well, it seems like yeah. And when the
Texans saw this, they did not fire again. He did
not falter. The Texans, who were famous for their honor
and valor, cheered him when they stopped firing, told him
(30:40):
to continue to the breastworks, and then he was congratulated, interrogated,
gave them very little, and then they exchanged him in
the siege a couple days later. He stayed with the
ninety ninth until the war's end. Died in nineteen seventeen
at the age of eighty six in Missouri. The Texans
(31:01):
suggested he win the Congressional Medal of Honor, and he
did in eighteen ninety eight. So there you go. Totomis J. Higgins,
a Canadian Union War hero from the siege at Vicksburg.
Not since Vicksburg has Mississippi been attacked like Lane Kiffin
said what he said in the Vanity Fair article of

Pe we love doing. William Royce Skaggs Boss Gags one
of the more interesting paths to rock and roll superstardom.
You will hear. Born in Kenton, Ohio. Father World War
Two pilot turned traveling salesman. So they moved all over
the place. A couple of spots in Oklahoma, a few
spots in Texas. Went to high school outside of Dallas,
(31:59):
Saint Marks Preparatory School. When he was twelve, met up
with his best friend, Steve Miller. Yeah, they became very
close friends. They learned to play the guitar together. His
high school friends decided that Billy needed a nickname. There
(32:21):
was really nothing special or no story behind the name Boz.
They just called them Boz and that was it. So
Steve and Boz go all the way back to nineteen
fifty nine when it comes to their first band. While
they were sophomores at Saint Mark's, Skaggs was lead vocals,
(32:41):
Miller on guitar for the Marksmen. When they graduated in
sixty two, they wanted to keep playing music together, so
they both agreed to go to you Dub Madison as
a matter of fact, all the way from Dallas, and
they played in a bunch of college bands, blues bands.
But Skaggs decided school wasn't for him, so he dropped out,
(33:01):
took off, went to London, traveled through Europe, made his
way from town to town busking, and somehow landed a
record deal in Sweden set up Shop recorded his first
solo record there in nineteen sixty five. It didn't do well,
so the label dropped him, stopped promoting it, and it
(33:23):
just so happened to coincide with a postcard he got
from Steve Miller saying he'd like him to come to
San Francisco to play in his band, that they're getting
some traction.
Speaker 2 (33:31):
So he did.
Speaker 3 (33:32):
He was on the Steve Miller Band's first two records,
Children of the Future and Sailor, but more pop leaning
sound wasn't for skag so he took off to do
the solo thing again. Atlantic scooped him up. First, released
nothing commercially, but critically celebrated. Still, Atlantic dropped him, so
he hooked up with the band Mother Earth for a minute,
(33:55):
did a tour, was part of the studio recording of
their second album, and then Columbia decided to give him
another shot. Nothing on the first release, nothing on the
second release. Third did okay, and good on Columbia Records
for sticking with Skags because it was his fourth release,
Silk Degrees, that was his signature album, and a lot
(34:19):
went into Silk Degrees. Of course you're hearing the Lido
shuffle behind us. That was obviously a monster hit. But
his session musicians for Silk Degrees were the guys that
would form Toto, and the success of that record was
the driving force behind why they decided to not just
be studio musicians but start their own band. So Toto
(34:39):
was kind of born out of the sessions of Silk Degrees.
Was nominated for Grammys out the Album of the Year Grammy.
It peaked at number two on the Billboard Top well
two hundred. It was number one all over Europe. Had
four hits low Down, what can I Say? We're All Alone?
And of course this one Lido Shuffle Down won the
(35:00):
Grammy for Best Song, and John Travolta said that his
famous Saturday Night Fever Dance was actually choreographed to Lowdown,
but they couldn't get the rights from Columbia because they
had already licensed it to another film. So that is
how the Begis ended up getting involved in Saturday Night

Fever at Lowdown ben In who knows.

Cover of a Silk Degrees is shot at a casino
point in Avalon. That's where he is. I don't know
why the Marlin Club must not have been available, but
nice we tried, they would let us do it. A
nice local connection there.

His next couple releases did not hit commercially, but he
did have a couple of hits on the Urban Cowboy soundtrack.
Look what You've Done to Me was a big one,
right Travolta's like I need Skags in my film. He
then suffered from an intense bit of anxiety and stopped touring,
stopped making music for about a half decade, but in

eighty eight he opened to stay involved in music. I
had no idea about this one until this particular iteration
of Skags. Had a bunch of bands play there, probably
my favorite venue in the city. He opened Slims in
San Francisco and was its owner until it closed in
twenty twenty. Puts out solo records pretty regularly had a

big time kind of before it became the thing to do.
The retro tours. Three Headed Monster Tour with Michael McDonald
and Steely Dan and Boskags got number one on the
Blues Chart in twenty eighteen seven shows in Japan. Bought
a bunch of wine and then got into a vineyard thing.
Bought three acres of a vineyard, sold that to a

bunch of bigger wineries, and sadly that place burned down.
With all of his notes and journals and lear ricks
and songs that were written out in the in the

We got to be able to follow some rules in
the country, right, like we got to be able to
do it. I understand the rule law seems to be
slipping away by the day. Right, I get it. I
follow politics. We all sort of follow it, like we
know it's sort of going away. But even when you
have a steadfast rule, you cannot bet on the team

that you are playing for. Like it said, block and white,
if it comes right, it doesn't matter if you're playing
in the game, not playing the game, red shirting, stinging
at home, sitting with your parents' house at the beach,
because you know you cannot gamble on the team you
are playing for. And there's many good reasons for that. Right,
even if you're not playing the game, you might have

to infinite information. Okay, well that's that's you know. Maybe
that helps move doesn't helped. But the fact is is
that once you start betting on your team, it's always
gonna lead to more, right, It's gonna lead to more
things that the center. You open the door to allowing
this to happen. It allows more the fairest things to happen, right,
and the door should always stay shut here, I think

we can be it's very logical to say, hey, you're
an into double a football player. You can bet on
in DOUAA baseball, you bet on basketball, you bet on NFL,
you bet on on whatever you want, Baseball, all the
World Series, whatever you want. Just don't bet on the
game you're in. I think that's a very simple rule
to follow. There's many integrity reasons for that. Like even

moving forward now, when you watch Saxa Tech play, one
thing stots me is ever fixing a game has never
gonna do to that. He's not doing that on that's
ever gonna happen. But every time you watch sax A
tax play, you're gonna be thinking about him gambling on
the sport of football. Right, It's naturally gonna happen. It's
gonna be talked about. And as sports fans, I'm a
sports fan. I'm a sports fan long before playing in

the NFL. Still a sports fan. Now, you want and
have to believe that the games are being played for
the right reasons, right, you know, we got game three
tonight the finals. Great serious, so far right, and imagine
watching that game going one of the players maybe gambling
off the game right now. You can't do it. You
can't do as a sports fan. And so I just

find this ruling very disheartening because he admitted he broke
a rule. Yeah I gamble on my team, and Joe's like, yeah,
well I guess it doesn't really matter and you can
play anyways. I just think it's that message to send.
It now opened up the door for more gambling to
happen on a sport from players that are currently playing.

And do you think it's a really miss guy? They're
ruled it helping it's.

Overturned, you know, I know it's I've talked about Congress
and the NCAA wants then to get involved that they
don't want to get involved. It's the last thing they
want to deal with is this sort of stuff. So
what would be their path to try to getting this
figured out? I mean is this where shouldnt shouldn't Brett
Rmark have something to do with this? I mean, isn't
this where a conference commissioner comes in and says, yeah,

whatever with your judge, don't care. We can't have this.
This just is a bad look for our conference to
have this guy out there playing football.

Opponents, you know, school presidents of the other team saying
we refuse to play a guy that spent ninety k
on freaking gambling sports gambling, Like what do you think
is the what are the paths for them to try
to write this one thing really closely?

The money the ninety case sounds like a lot. It's
it's actually right, you know, it's not like you can
like you know, it's not like he didn't win or
lose ninety thousand dollars, Like you can deposit ten thousand
dollars int your talent and over the lifetime ninety thousand
dollars and you don't take any money in or out,

Like that's that could happen, right, Like I think that
the number sounds sallacious. The problem he's betting on his
own freaking team is that that's the problem. And the
problem is like he's clearly has in an addition to
her when he's betting live strike props at baseball games,
like a yeah, a lot, Like I'm not betting on
whether it's a ball or striking a baseball game. I'd
go too, like, that's you know, that's a problem. As

far as the question you asked, your mustn't do nothing
about it? What's you go? It's just this is this
is their cash twer. Now it's a playoff team. We're
gonna do anything about He's gonna say the courts made
their rule and we respect the decision of the courts.
You know, Jebo has no chief left. I mean if they,
if they did, they would say, okay, well, any game
he plays in, we're going to vacate that that wins

of you guys, right because he broke the roles he
broke through. The problem is to go to court and lose.
I mean, anyways, look every single case, I think the
Alabama one of the professional basketball players trying to play
Alabama actually won that case. They've lost everything else. And
you know, nobody should say, hey man, we're not gonna
if you play this year, We're going to vacate your wins.

And maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. You know, teams
not scheduling them. I mean, look, big twelve teams have
to schedule, Like what are they gonna do? It is
forfeit the game. But you know it's a lot of
tough talk. Maybe their non conference slate, you cast themselves
an opportunity to talk about them scheduling USC find itself
fun that USC would schedule them, and just like not
the Notre Dame thing, which is you know, Tetos is
(22:42):
where is very big on that, like you know Central
Texas Tech, but not not Notre Dame. Still like you know,
maybe they lose a chance to schedule that. I saw
something where the softball team it's been tough for them
to schedule non preference games and still drinking wrong. They
just paid a lot of money for for one of
their pitchers, multiple their pitchers. But I think it's a
lot of tough talk, like we're gonna schedule you anymore, Well,
(23:05):
you're gonna forfeit the game if you're a big twelve
team and doesn't want to schedule Texas Tech. I mean,
the answer a guest is n double a just saying okay, fine,
like you want to play, well, then you're you're suspended
or you're you know, we're gonna suspend you longer, or
we're gonna do this or that to your team. Otherwise
nothing and look, they don't really know. People think this
is going to lead to some reform. No, no, it's
(23:26):
not gonna lead to the building up passing that build
the bill stinks. Well, he's not gonna get you a
support that bill. Look, I'm sure someone will call in
and tell me I'm wrong. But like the government Cappy
rages for a private citizen, like a non government job too.
(23:47):
That in our country, right in this situation, they want
to cap the wages of college football players. Like maybe
you could argue that Derek at state universities and maybe
that's your way to make that work. But they'll all
say universities they're private schools too. Like the idea that
the government's gonna cap someone's wages killsburgh on Americans. Like
the bill's never gonna pass, is no chance to pass.

Maybe there's a fuck the bargaining things set aside for gambling,
you sign your starship paperwork. Part of that is you
can't get with Jordy can't do it. Jordy broke the rules. Oh,
I don't know what the answer is.

civil war story, but it is Canadian News. This guy
made his fame in Vicksburg, Mississippi, which was referenced here
when Lane Kiffen went on a vanity fair and attacked
Oxford's antebellum past and a puff piece and vanity fair,

as I said in it, And it was said on
this show, Matt that not since Vicksburg has there been
such a siege on Mississis. This man's name auc Thomas J.
Higgins would have been one hundred and ninety five years
old today from Huntington, Quebec, which is I believe the
(28:14):
Huntington Beach of Canada. I've heard that. Yeah, big surf
events and a lot of stuff.
Speaker 3 (28:20):
Huge overheads, crazy out there.
Speaker 2 (28:23):
You gotta pay for parkin. He ended up in Illinois,
so an American and was a private in company d
of the ninety ninth Illinois enrolled in the Army of
Tennessee with Ulysses S. Grant when they besieged the Confederate
(28:43):
stronghold of Vicksburg, Mississippi, which was important because Mississippi controlled
the Mississippi River. Vicksburg in particular was a big port
for it, and if you controlled the Mississippi River, you
could control a lot of the western front of the war.
The Father of Waters, as it was referred to by
Abraham Lincoln. Anyway, the seed started on May eighteenth, eighteen
(29:07):
sixty three, but on the twenty second, Grant launched a
small probing assault on the port town and our guy
Higgins volunteered to act as the color bearer to hold
the American flag like Rick Monday, as the previous one
(29:27):
was wounded, and they ran into the second Texas Infantry
Regiment matt As. You know, the Texas soldiers were pretty
famous in the Civil War pre nil. They fought viciously.
Now that you give them the nil, you know something
to live for. Anyway, the Texans repulsed the Union pretty quickly,
(29:54):
but he didn't seem to hear or just got super
brave and left his army with the Colors after the
advance was stopped and continued the advance toward the Confederate lines.
No more, no less than one hundred men took deliberate
aim right at Higgins, fired at him point blank, and
(30:16):
yet he was not hit. Very pulp fiction like moment
active DoD well, it seems like yeah. And when the
Texans saw this, they did not fire again. He did
not falter. The Texans, who were famous for their honor
and valor, cheered him when they stopped firing, told him
(30:40):
to continue to the breastworks, and then he was congratulated, interrogated,
gave them very little, and then they exchanged him in
the siege a couple days later. He stayed with the
ninety ninth until the war's end. Died in nineteen seventeen
at the age of eighty six in Missouri. The Texans
(31:01):
suggested he win the Congressional Medal of Honor, and he
did in eighteen ninety eight. So there you go. Totomis J. Higgins,
a Canadian Union War hero from the siege at Vicksburg.
Not since Vicksburg has Mississippi been attacked like Lane Kiffin
said what he said in the Vanity Fair article of
(31:23):
last month.

Illinois? Really? I got to get in the Civil War. Hey,
he joined up. You know, Matt, he joined up. He
rolled up. You're a live guy.
Speaker 3 (31:36):
Pe we love doing. William Royce Skaggs Boss Gags one
of the more interesting paths to rock and roll superstardom.
You will hear. Born in Kenton, Ohio. Father World War
Two pilot turned traveling salesman. So they moved all over
the place. A couple of spots in Oklahoma, a few
spots in Texas. Went to high school outside of Dallas,
(31:59):
Saint Marks Preparatory School. When he was twelve, met up
with his best friend, Steve Miller. Yeah, they became very
close friends. They learned to play the guitar together. His
high school friends decided that Billy needed a nickname. There
(32:21):
was really nothing special or no story behind the name Boz.
They just called them Boz and that was it. So
Steve and Boz go all the way back to nineteen
fifty nine when it comes to their first band. While
they were sophomores at Saint Mark's, Skaggs was lead vocals,
(32:41):
Miller on guitar for the Marksmen. When they graduated in
sixty two, they wanted to keep playing music together, so
they both agreed to go to you Dub Madison as
a matter of fact, all the way from Dallas, and
they played in a bunch of college bands, blues bands.
But Skaggs decided school wasn't for him, so he dropped out,
(33:01):
took off, went to London, traveled through Europe, made his
way from town to town busking, and somehow landed a
record deal in Sweden set up Shop recorded his first
solo record there in nineteen sixty five. It didn't do well,
so the label dropped him, stopped promoting it, and it
(33:23):
just so happened to coincide with a postcard he got
from Steve Miller saying he'd like him to come to
San Francisco to play in his band, that they're getting
some traction.
Speaker 2 (33:31):
So he did.
Speaker 3 (33:32):
He was on the Steve Miller Band's first two records,
Children of the Future and Sailor, but more pop leaning
sound wasn't for skag so he took off to do
the solo thing again. Atlantic scooped him up. First, released
nothing commercially, but critically celebrated. Still, Atlantic dropped him, so
he hooked up with the band Mother Earth for a minute,
(33:55):
did a tour, was part of the studio recording of
their second album, and then Columbia decided to give him
another shot. Nothing on the first release, nothing on the
second release. Third did okay, and good on Columbia Records
for sticking with Skags because it was his fourth release,
Silk Degrees, that was his signature album, and a lot
(34:19):
went into Silk Degrees. Of course you're hearing the Lido
shuffle behind us. That was obviously a monster hit. But
his session musicians for Silk Degrees were the guys that
would form Toto, and the success of that record was
the driving force behind why they decided to not just
be studio musicians but start their own band. So Toto
(34:39):
was kind of born out of the sessions of Silk Degrees.
Was nominated for Grammys out the Album of the Year Grammy.
It peaked at number two on the Billboard Top well
two hundred. It was number one all over Europe. Had
four hits low Down, what can I Say? We're All Alone?
And of course this one Lido Shuffle Down won the
(35:00):
Grammy for Best Song, and John Travolta said that his
famous Saturday Night Fever Dance was actually choreographed to Lowdown,
but they couldn't get the rights from Columbia because they
had already licensed it to another film. So that is
how the Begis ended up getting involved in Saturday Night
(35:24):
Fever at Lowdown ben In who knows.
Speaker 2 (35:27):
Cover of a Silk Degrees is shot at a casino
point in Avalon. That's where he is. I don't know
why the Marlin Club must not have been available, but
nice we tried, they would let us do it. A
nice local connection there.
Speaker 3 (35:44):
His next couple releases did not hit commercially, but he
did have a couple of hits on the Urban Cowboy soundtrack.
Look what You've Done to Me was a big one,
right Travolta's like I need Skags in my film. He
then suffered from an intense bit of anxiety and stopped touring,
stopped making music for about a half decade, but in
(36:06):
eighty eight he opened to stay involved in music. I
had no idea about this one until this particular iteration
of Skags. Had a bunch of bands play there, probably
my favorite venue in the city. He opened Slims in
San Francisco and was its owner until it closed in
twenty twenty. Puts out solo records pretty regularly had a
(36:29):
big time kind of before it became the thing to do.
The retro tours. Three Headed Monster Tour with Michael McDonald
and Steely Dan and Boskags got number one on the
Blues Chart in twenty eighteen seven shows in Japan. Bought
a bunch of wine and then got into a vineyard thing.
Bought three acres of a vineyard, sold that to a
(36:51):
bunch of bigger wineries, and sadly that place burned down.
With all of his notes and journals and lear ricks
and songs that were written out in the in the
fire nominated for nine one on.
Speaker 2 (37:04):
The Universal Fire was not the Universal people lost their tapes, Matt,
they did.
Speaker 3 (37:11):
Uh. He just put out a solo record last year
called Detour Boss Gags.
Speaker 2 (37:16):
