Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, we continue on Fred Rogan, Rodney Pete on
a five seventy l a sports uh later this hour,
Kevin will get us caught up today on everything and
it's lit and a great deal has happened today, Kevin,
you want to tease anything right now? For it's lit
coming up later.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Yes, there is another major franchise that is leaving their city, Fred,
we'll talk about that coming up, and it's lit.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Oh.
Speaker 4 (00:20):
I like that tease? Oh? I like that? You want
to give us a hint or no? No, Well, I'm
just wanting to tea. You got to tease a hint,
a slogan, a thing at that?
Speaker 5 (00:31):
What do you want if I tell you what it is?
And what the hell is the point of listening?
Speaker 6 (00:34):
Well?
Speaker 1 (00:35):
I just thought maybe I thought like an initial or
a sport or whatever.
Speaker 5 (00:40):
It's a competition between two teams. How about that? That's
the sport that they play?
Speaker 1 (00:45):
All right, fine, that was worth nothing, but this is
worth something. Who wants to go see the Dodges and
Angels on Sunday? We'll give tickets away right now, Rodney,
right now, Yes, let's do it as six six seventy
what call her number?
Speaker 3 (00:58):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (00:59):
Come on, number four. Let's make it quick, all.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
Right, call it Ember four right now. If your caller
for you're going to see the Dodgers in the angels.
NBA Finals continue, Let's talk NBA Finals. Let's talk some Lakers.
Let's bring in our man, Dan Wygan.
Speaker 4 (01:13):
Dan, thanks for jumping on guys.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
Happy NBA Finals week.
Speaker 4 (01:17):
Happy NBA Finals week, Dan.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
I love it. This is some old school basketball. They're
going man against man and it's tough and it's physical.
That's the way the game should be played.
Speaker 7 (01:28):
Sorry, I'm just chuckling at you describing you like that.
It's kind of like the pilot and airplane. It's like
ever seen a Roman Gladiator movie, Tommy the Uh, Yeah,
it's been. It's been really fun, you know. I mean,
it's good to be It's fun when you can be
excited about something and then it delivers, right, And I
(01:49):
thought Game one was a game that I think a
lot of people around basketball are really excited for it.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
It absolutely delivered. You know, you had a game that
had really big runs.
Speaker 7 (01:59):
You had I think the Spurs certainly not at their best,
you know, Vick to Wamanyama not at his best, but
it was like a tight close, competitive game and then
you know, the smallest kind of the court made.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
The biggest plays, which was it was a lot of
fun to watch.
Speaker 8 (02:14):
Yeah, I felt like the Spurs ran out of gas,
Dan and you know obviously going through that and that's
no excuse because you got to play, but going through
that grueling seven game series with Oka, see, it just
felt in the second half it kind of ran out
of gas. They were up thirteen and kind of slip away.
But you're right, where does Jalen Brunson work ranked man
amongst the stars in the league? Now? I mean he's
(02:37):
been he's been that guy for a while now and
unstoppable as a score even when he was with Dallas
and now in New York, he's been the guy and
got him to the finals on the brink of a championship.
Where do you rank him?
Speaker 7 (02:50):
I mean that's a great question. I mean, look, he's
certainly I think one of the ten best players in
the league.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
Right.
Speaker 7 (02:55):
I think he is on a great team and it
is a team that is built to accentuate his strengths and.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
To hide some of his weaknesses.
Speaker 7 (03:04):
You know, that's that's a roster that has really really
strong perimeter defense. It has you know, it has rim protection,
as rebounding, it has shooting. So like there's there's a
lot there. And this isn't to discredit Jalen Brunson finding stretch, right, Like,
I think, if anything, it's more you know, he has
bent his game around his teammates, and his teammates are
(03:27):
there to help, you know, elevate him. And it's just
a very good basketball team. I think is the biggest
thing that I see with him. But but you know,
you know what's interesting, Rodney, is that there is this
bit of conventional wisdom at basketball about small guards, you know,
and this was a thing that I heard a lot
covering Chris Paul. You know, like, can this guy you know,
(03:50):
at the end of the day, right, he's always a
six foot guy trying to make the biggest play, and
that just that doesn't work, right, And eventually that that
the lack of size, We'll catch up with you and
somebody bigger, somebody's stronger, will we'll move you off your spot.
Jalen Brenson, you know, through at least in game one
kind of you know, look, now this was not a
(04:12):
like he shot like thirty one times or something like that, right,
I think it was like thirteen to thirty one, right,
But there was just like a relentlessness to him. And
I mean, like, this is a fire hydrant built type player.
He's very strong, and he doesn't play like a small guard,
I guess would be my point.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
Right.
Speaker 7 (04:31):
He is not a perfect basketball player by any stretch,
but he's incredibly clutch and he's got top notch footwork
and the moment, never see who's too big for him, right,
And I think when you combine only, he's a winner.
I mean it's a cliche, but he's a winner.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
And that's yeah, that's.
Speaker 7 (04:49):
Why he's one of the best in the league. You know,
is he seventh, is he twelfth?
Speaker 3 (04:53):
I don't know.
Speaker 7 (04:54):
It's kind of hard to say. You know, there's a
lot of like Luca chatter out there today, right. I've
seen some players say this is why Jalen Brunson's you know,
better than Luka Doncic or stuff like that, and you know,
I just don't think that's true. But I do think that,
you know, Jalen Brunson today is in a more winning
(05:16):
situation and because of that, like when given the opportunity
to go win games, he does it.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
Dan Whitey is whether it's Fred Rogan, Rodney Pete and
five to seventy LA Sports. Okay, so we got the
finals sorted out. Let's move to the business at hand,
which is always a business sand moving forward with the Lakers.
Your former colleague and friend, Ratt Turner wrote a couple
of things. A Austin Reeves has not given anybody a
hometown discount?
Speaker 4 (05:44):
Do you believe that's the mutual?
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Not fully?
Speaker 7 (05:48):
Now? I mean this is gonna be awkward because, like
I don't. I think it's important to I think it's
important to set ground rules here as to like what
is occurring right now, right, and and what's occurring is
is you have Austin Reeves's people, and Austin Reeves's agent
and agents are they have a job, right, and that
(06:08):
job is to get as much money as possible in
free agency? You know, that's that's the job. This will
be the biggest pay day Austin Reves ever gets, right,
and this is the best chance I getting it, So
maximize the opportunity. Two, I think it's the Lakers' best
interest to try to get him on as good of
a number as possible for the Lakers, Right, So those
(06:29):
two things are kind of working against each other here
a little bit. Do I think there's a world in
which Austin reaves takes less to stay with the Lakers? Honestly,
maybe a little, But like I don't think. I think
it's more like he wants to be in LA. He
said he wants to be on in LA, and I
think it's on the Lakers to give him reasons to
stay in LA.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
Does that make sense?
Speaker 4 (06:49):
Sure?
Speaker 7 (06:51):
You know, like you don't say, hey, we're gonna give
you six million dollars less and like maybe we'll figure
out a use for.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
It, Like that's not That's not the way you take
a discount in the NBA. And this applies to.
Speaker 7 (07:02):
Lebron James too, you know, like if you're Rob Polinka,
you know, and if you're Andrew Friedman and your Foreign
ziety and whoever's in this new front office, your job.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
Is to go to these guys and say, if you
do this, we we can do this. This is how
we are going to win, right, And that's that needs
to be the calculus.
Speaker 7 (07:21):
But but look, I think I think Austin Reaveson has
been underpaid basically his entire career. And this is a
chance for him to get paid.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
So yes, he wants to get picked.
Speaker 7 (07:35):
But can I speak to really quickly. I don't believe
that to be the fiber maxim Yeah, I don't think
that's I don't think that's a realistic.
Speaker 4 (07:43):
Got you personally? Yeah, I agree with you.
Speaker 8 (07:47):
Do you do you believe what's happening in the conference
finals and now the finals with these teams is hurting
Austin Reeves. And I say that because when you look up,
when you see the young players from the Spurs and
and okay, seeing their depth, I don't know if Austin
Reeves is top five on any one of those teams.
(08:11):
And now you're telling me I'm supposed to be the
number two guy at the Lakers. I'm just wondering is
that a factor as they go to the negotiation, they're
watching this and going, yes, you know, Dylan Harper's Stefan Castle,
who would you take?
Speaker 7 (08:26):
I mean, so I can just put this out there, Rodney,
and this I do know this to be a fact.
I mean, like Austins has fans in the San Antono
Spurs front office, right like there's there's there's more than
one way to I don't say skin a cat like
I feel like I'm sending at somehouse there's cats probably
loving ready to attack. You know, there's one one way
(08:46):
to do this, and I think that the bind the
Lakers can find themselves into one of one of the
one of the pitfalls that exists for them is that
they can look at the spurs in the thunder and say,
we need to match this, right, like, this is what
we have to do. We have to play like this.
They're never going to play like that because they have
(09:06):
Luka Doocic, right, And that's different. He's different than Victor
weman Yama. He's different than Jalen Brunson. He's different than
shake Elgis Alexander. He's sort of his own thing. So,
like the goal is you have to maximize Lukadocic, right,
And I think a better question is you have to
ask yourself is can you maximize Luka Doncic if it
(09:28):
costs forty plus million dollars a year to keep Austin Reeves?
The answer I would say is yes, I.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
Think you can.
Speaker 7 (09:36):
I think that the two best Luka Doncic teams add
high end secondary playmakers, had Jalen Brunson, had Kyrie Irving,
you know, and and like this.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
Isn't those two guys category.
Speaker 7 (09:51):
I'm putting the player archetype in those two guys categories.
I think if you looked at their numbers next to
Luka Doncic, they're all pretty similar. Now that doesn't mean
they're the same. Players that are obviously different. Kyrie Irving
I think will be a Hall of Famer. You know,
Jalen Brunson's on his way to that, you know, obviously,
like Austin Reeves hasn't made an All Sart team, but
(10:12):
he is a high end offensive player. You look at
you look at the list of players this year who
had Austin's you know, points, rebounds, assists at his efficiency numbers,
Like these are all top tier NBA offensive players, right like,
like I would I think the worst on the list
is like LaMelo Ball, right like otherwise, like these are
(10:33):
tip top guys in the league. He is a like
we need to I think we spend a lot of
time talking about the things that Austin Reeves isn't. I'm
gonna sound a little bit like his agent here, but
like what about the things that he is, right, which
is an elite offensive player, which is part of the
recipe of a high end Lukadacic team. Now the question
is like, can you find me the room running center?
(10:53):
Can you find me the two way shooting wings? Can
you find me the depth and athleticism? You know, like
where is my Derek Jones, Where's my PJ. Washington, Where's
my Derek Lively? Like these are the questions of the
Daniel Gafford. These are the questions that the Lakers I
think need to be more focused on. And then, you know,
(11:13):
more interestingly, I think too is like okay, like how
does Lebron slot into this? Because like Lebron doesn't fit
that archetype from like how it worked in Dallas, but
we saw with their own two eyes that it can
work with Lukadanic, So how do we fit that into
the equation? Like that's to me is the more realistic challenge.
(11:35):
So I guess long way to answer that question, Ronnie,
I don't. I don't think it should matter much to
be honest, because I just you're not. The goal has
to be the best version of a Luka Doncic. Lakers
seem not some not some mimicked Spurs roster, which we
would they like they won't be able to match it,
Like that's just not going to be how they can't.
(11:57):
They can't get that young in that athletic this fast.
That's it's not possible.
Speaker 4 (12:02):
All right.
Speaker 1 (12:02):
Well, that being said, they can't get that young, they
can't get that athletic, so ultimately they can't contend.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
All right, So that's not true. I don't, I don't,
I don't. I don't think that's true, all right, you
know what I mean. I mean, I think you have to.
Speaker 7 (12:17):
Be the best version of yourself, right, And that sounds
a little bit like Tony Robbins, But I think timely
reference for for all the listeners to self help Guru.
I think, yeah, I don't know. I don't know what's
going on with me today, Guys. The between that and airplane,
I'm really really aging myself.
Speaker 3 (12:39):
I've been wearing a whoop.
Speaker 7 (12:40):
It's going to say that I'm operating at like a
seventy year old pace.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
Today, I think. No.
Speaker 7 (12:46):
I mean, look, the Indiana Pacers are a very different
basket from the Oklahoma City thunder right, They're very different
roster composition. They were went away from winning the NBA
Finals last year, Like you just have to beat you
have to give yourself the best chance to the the
For all the talk of it being a copycat league
and all this different stuff, the reality is is the
(13:07):
way team building works in the NBA, and I've learned
this and really have come to believe it to be true,
is how well can you maximize your strength strengths.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
And hide your weaknesses.
Speaker 7 (13:18):
And if you can find a balance where you can
really maximize your strengths and you can really cover up
your weaknesses and you have top end talent, which Lukadotvich
is like one of those guys, you have a chance.
Now does that mean you go into a seat a
season or a series as a favorite. Not necessarily, But
I think it doesn't mean you can't content. If you
(13:42):
don't feel like you can content with Lukadotci, like you
should trade them tomorrow, like honestly, Like, but I think
that's foolish. The whole goal is to get players like Lukadancic.
Speaker 8 (13:52):
Yeah, but you just mentioned, you know, you got to
surround him with the wings that can shoot and play
defense and running big man. They're going to be able
to do that with paying Austin Reeves forty million dollars
a year.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
I think it's possible. I do.
Speaker 7 (14:10):
I think it's going to require better player development, right, so,
like all of a sudden, a player like Adu Harrow
like matters right sooner than later. We'll see what they
do it with their twenty fifth pick. Whether they take
it or trade it, we don't know yet. But if
(14:31):
you take it, like you don't want to go into
these drafts saying like I need to find a player
that can help me right away. But it's a sooner
than later proposition. I mean, they thought Dalton connect would
be able to help them sooner than later, and he couldn't,
you know, so I think it's stuff like that. You know,
I would again just like I would again point out
(14:51):
that you know, the Lakers are are it feels like
they're really fun way because they were swept in the
second round. You know, like they don't have like the
same type of archetyped roster as the Spurs or the
Thunder or you know, even the Nuggets at times. But
like you know, two of those teams, the Thunder and
(15:12):
the Nuggets are home too, you know, the Spurs are
here right now, and like we'll see, we'll we'll see
how teams sort of start to bend their ways around
them and try to figure them out, right, Like, that's
if the best version of the Knicks and that wasn't.
Speaker 3 (15:27):
The best version of the nixt in Game one beat
the Spurs, you know what I mean?
Speaker 8 (15:31):
That?
Speaker 7 (15:32):
Who's to say that the best version extra the Celtics
can't do it, or the best version of the Lakers
or the best version of the Nuggets. That's sort of
the parode era of the NBA right now, And I
think that's why you need to have your foot on
the gas and you need to remain aggressive because these
things open and shut really really quickly.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
It feels like all right.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
Brad also wrote that maybe the Lakers would offer Lebron
fifty million two year deal player option after that first year.
Speaker 4 (16:03):
What do you think of that?
Speaker 3 (16:05):
Fifty total or fifty each?
Speaker 1 (16:07):
No, fifty total twenty five twenty five?
Speaker 7 (16:11):
Yeah, I mean yeah, I mean that seems like that
seems again reasonable. He's better than that, Like Lebron James
is better than a twenty five million dollars player today
that this is where it gets weird. This is where
you start paying his birth certificate and not his the
back of his basketball cards.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
A little bit.
Speaker 7 (16:31):
But you know, from a team building standway, this is
where you know, the Lakers can get a little bit creative.
They can look at the market and say, here are
the teams with cap space are introduced, teams realistic. Lebron
James threats answers mostly no. So that would mean that
you would either have to sign and trade for him
if you're a team, or you're gonna have to pay
him less than if we pay him twenty five million dollars.
(16:53):
Like for the Warriors to pay Lebron James twenty five
million dollars, like they have to make a trade, Like
they can't do it cleanly, right, They probably need to
trade Jimmy Butler or something like that.
Speaker 3 (17:03):
And like I would say, good luck.
Speaker 7 (17:06):
You know, for the Calves to pay Lebron James twenty
five or thirty million dollars, they're gonna have to trade
Jared Allen. They're gonna have to trade, you know, or
not sign James Harden or not you know, move in
a direction that doesn't seem like they're moving. So the
Lakers can kind of look at this and I don't
want to say play hardball, but but can look at
the market and in theory should be working with rich
(17:28):
Ball and working with Lebron James and to try to
find a number at which one is so respectful because
he deserves respect and two that it that it still
puts the position for Lebron James to have an exit
ramp in his career where he can go out playing
meaningful basketball on a winning team, because I think that
matters to him. Now, does a winning team mean like
(17:48):
they come into the next season favor to win sixty
five games? Like I don't think that's what is realistic,
But you know where every night, where you put in
all the time and effort that he puts into play,
it's worth it. I think the Lakers can offer that
And so yeah, I mean that seems like a reasonable
number to me.
Speaker 1 (18:06):
All right, let me ask you this, If nobody else
can offer twenty five million a year, why do you
bit against yourself because.
Speaker 7 (18:12):
He's Lebron James, Like, I guess this is like the
best argument for it.
Speaker 3 (18:20):
I mean, I don't know.
Speaker 7 (18:21):
This is what's fascinating, right, This is where like we
just don't know how like the freedmannxiety part of this
is going to like factor in all of this. We
just don't know, like, how callous are they going to be?
You know, they have not been particularly sentimental with Dodgers players.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
What did you say how callous? Wait did you say,
how callous are they going to Clayton Kershaw?
Speaker 7 (18:43):
They were Clayton Kershel they were What about? I mean
they've let multiple good players walk.
Speaker 4 (18:49):
Yeah, I'm talking about our time career, keeping them on, keeping.
Speaker 3 (18:52):
Them going, you know, And and that's what I mean.
Speaker 7 (18:55):
We just don't really know how they're going to operate,
you know, with a different set of rules, Like we
can we can look at this and we can guess
and we can say they're going to move this way
or this way or that way. I'm going to assume
that they're smart enough to know that this doesn't work
the same in baseball that like, you know, your your
prospect systems are are are thinner, your access to trades
(19:18):
is less your financial advantages are lessened because of the
salary cap and different things like that. You know, I
also think that there's something too, like I mean, if
you want Lebron James on your team, you want him
to feel valued ultimately, but you know, and he's going
to be playing for less than what he's worth. Like
(19:40):
if he's making twenty five million dollars for that's less
than he's worth.
Speaker 8 (19:43):
Yeah, and there'll be two guys making more than him,
which has never happened in.
Speaker 4 (19:46):
At last yeah, at least exactly right. Yeah, no Ida.
Speaker 7 (19:53):
I wish I had Yeah, I wish I had more.
I wish I had more answers on this stuff.
Speaker 3 (19:57):
I I think I.
Speaker 7 (20:00):
Think, look like this stuff is all coming soon, right, Like,
I mean the Lakers, the Lakers have, the Lakers have
a handful of roads they can go down, one of
which is going to be less changed than I think
people expect. And that like that is an option, and
it's not a great one necessarily, right, Like nobody likes
(20:21):
quote unquote running back, and I think you know, and
I reported this, like I don't really think that's the
desire of like the Luca the Luca camp, right is
like they want to start moving towards the team and
the vision that they thought they they signed up for
when they when they signed their extension. You know, But
(20:42):
I do think fantas need to be realistic, like like
it's not going to be like I don't think this
is a summer in which you get the room running center,
you get two three and D wings and you find
you know, a two dynamic young athletic depth pieces like
you know that this seems like this is the first
step towards acquiring all that stuff, but it's a part
(21:05):
of the process. Like you know, if you go you know,
pedal la metal on this, like you have a good
good enough chance of ending up with like Mosgove decks.
Speaker 3 (21:14):
Yeah, yea, and and that can't happen, Like that cannot happen.
Speaker 7 (21:19):
So you have, like I think, a little prudence, you know,
like meshed with aggressiveness if you can, if you can,
if you can walk that line as a Lakers front office,
that's what they're gonna need to do.
Speaker 8 (21:29):
Yeah, Dan, you mentioned, you know, mon front office. They're
doing things differently, which the Dodgers they're the gold standard
to doing that and putting more money into front of it.
To that point, finding that guy developing someone finding that
you know, diamond into rough finding you know, Dylan Harper
of Rutgers, who knew he was good, but who knew
he's gonna.
Speaker 4 (21:48):
Be this good?
Speaker 7 (21:49):
Right, here's the number three was the number wasn't he
like the number two pick in the draft.
Speaker 4 (21:52):
No, no, no, no, I don't think people.
Speaker 8 (21:54):
People didn't expect it when he went to when he
was at Rutgers, he was going to be this guy
in the NBA.
Speaker 3 (21:58):
But anyway, he was a five stars Dad is Dad.
Speaker 4 (22:01):
Is am I know who is dead.
Speaker 8 (22:03):
Maybe that's the wrong analogy, but I'm just talking about
the Dodgers coming over, taking taking over.
Speaker 7 (22:08):
You got to find your max moncies. Yeah, Like if
we're looking at the Dodger Will.
Speaker 4 (22:12):
Smith, Will Smith's Max of the world.
Speaker 7 (22:14):
Yeah, and look like they credit to the last to
the last regime, which is a lot of it so exists.
Like they have found some of these guys, Like we're
talking about paying one of them forty million dollars, right,
Like that is the dad is a diamond in the rough, Right,
that is somebody that that you found and developed and
(22:35):
and you know it's from an undrafted player.
Speaker 3 (22:37):
I mean, I think, I mean, I don't.
Speaker 7 (22:39):
I don't know how you guys felt, but like I mentioned,
every time Alex Crusoe would make a play, I mentions
on social media, you know about like how do they
let this guy leave?
Speaker 4 (22:48):
Right?
Speaker 7 (22:48):
You know, I saw the names Taylor, Horton, Tucker and
Kendrick Nunn Moore during these playoffs, and I think I
did the year after Crusoe left, you know, And it's
like that's another but but I.
Speaker 3 (22:59):
Think they've shown some ability to do it. But yeah,
you're right.
Speaker 7 (23:02):
I mean, you start winning on the margins more and
then you have to put your financial wherewithal and your
geographic advantages to better use. I mean that's sort of
but that's like, guys, like that's that's like a.
Speaker 3 (23:14):
Five year thing. I think like that doesn't just happen overnight.
Speaker 7 (23:20):
You know, And that's I think that's one of the
weird purchases. There is like a desire from a lot
of different people, not just fans, for it to happen fast,
and we'll see how quickly they can speed that process up.
Speaker 3 (23:32):
It's a it's a very interesting subplot to the Summer.
Speaker 4 (23:35):
Yeah, all right, while summer is upon a stance, I'll
start enjoying yours the minute the finals are over.
Speaker 3 (23:42):
Okay, guys, I'm gonna go get a great tan today.
I'm gonna kick back.
Speaker 7 (23:45):
I'll watch I'm gonna watch that young upstart Dylan Harper.
Speaker 3 (23:48):
Nobody knows about.
Speaker 8 (23:49):
Them, Nobody knows it, Nobody knows it, all right, Dana
Weekend Friday.
Speaker 3 (23:55):
I'm kidding.
Speaker 7 (23:55):
I'm just I'm just kidding, all right, guys, be good.
Speaker 4 (24:03):
And of course, Dylan Harper is not a young upstart.
Speaker 8 (24:05):
I'm talking about the young players that San Antonio has
been able to acquire.
Speaker 4 (24:10):
That's gonna be good for them for years. Dan Harper
is a superstar in this league. What are you talking about? Dan?
Don't try to mock me. I know what you meant.
I know what you meant. Come on, what even a question?
Come on? Not even a question?
Speaker 1 (24:24):
All right, Look, we gotta get caught up. We know
this team might be leaving its city. Kevin teesed it,
so we'll do its lip.
Speaker 4 (24:30):
Next.
Speaker 6 (24:31):
Make AM five seventy LA Sports a preset before you
plug in your phone. Presets in the iHeartRadio app now
available with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Just another easy
way to listen to LA's best sports talk.
Speaker 4 (24:45):
Oh yeah, welcome back, Freddy.
Speaker 8 (24:46):
Come on now, Trojan's been down five to one through
six and come up in the top of the six,
Load the bases and get a grand slam from Dean Carpeteer.
Put them ahead six y five. They just scored two
more now up eight to five and the seventh against
North Carolina.
Speaker 4 (25:05):
Go ahead, Trojans.
Speaker 8 (25:06):
Now they have to win two, right, Rodney, They gotta
win two. It's the best of three there they got
to win to This is the first one. They were
down five to one against North Carolina's ace and us
he had their ace on a mount who couldn't find it?
Mason Edwards, and he was he is the pitcher of
the year. Had struggled with with walks and just couldn't
(25:27):
find it, got behind, they were down five to one,
came all the way back and hit a grand slam
in the sixth to take the lead and then score
two more in the seventh. Now they're up eight to
five in the seventh inn in Chapel Hill. Go Trojans,
All right, Kevin, come.
Speaker 3 (25:42):
On, it's Lint.
Speaker 6 (25:46):
Stories lighting up their sports headbos.
Speaker 2 (25:49):
How they Rodney has a second career as a baseball
playboy play guy.
Speaker 4 (25:53):
Yeah for me, I'll take you.
Speaker 5 (25:54):
Come on, that's good.
Speaker 2 (25:56):
So, of course, the big news of the week was
Miles Garrett being traded to the Rams and the ra
held steadfast. According to all the reports, they did not
want to give up Jared Verse. Of course, Cleveland would
not relent, and it turns out a big reason for
that was a conversation that Brown's general manager Andrew Barry
had with Sam Presty, the general manager of the Oklahoma
City Thunder.
Speaker 5 (26:16):
So this is via Albert Breer.
Speaker 2 (26:17):
He reported that Barry reached out to Presty before the
deal was consummated to get his idea of how he
thinks and how he works, because he's what lauded as
one of the best front office people in all of sports.
And something that Presty told them is that when they
made that trade for Paul George and brought in Shake
guild As Alexander, most people talked about the four first
round picks that they received, but Presty said the true
(26:38):
value in that trade was Shae Guildas Alexander, who had
a good rookie season with the Clippers. They saw him
for a year, they liked what they saw. They thought
he had some really great potential. He was the prize.
While most people paid more attention to the picks, he
paid attention to the player. And he says, if you're
going to make a seismic trade like this, you make
sure that you get yourself a player that you think
is confident or that you confidently believe is going to
be able to put you over the top or have
(26:59):
real the good seasons for you. And that is what
basically told Andrew Berry to hold stead fast to bring
in a guy like Jared Verse. So talking about a trade,
whether it's for Verse with Miles Garrett or we're talking.
We talked to Nick Letty earlier about Terrek scoopl and
him saying, we got to make sure we get bone
to five players, including major league players, who are ready
to contribute right now.
Speaker 5 (27:17):
As much as fans, you.
Speaker 2 (27:18):
Know, glob over draft picks, these guys want to have
someone who can come in and actually produce for them
right this second, because a pick is a pick until
you make it, and then no one knows exactly how
that player is going to turn out.
Speaker 4 (27:30):
Yeah, but didn't the Browns get draft picks too.
Speaker 2 (27:32):
They got a first round pick and a fifth round
pick right right. But the prize, But what the prize was,
Jared Verse. What held up the entire negotiation for two
months was the fact that and by the way, I
think it says something that the Rams fought them on
it that they wanted to keep Jared versus as badly
as they did, and they eventually had to relent.
Speaker 5 (27:47):
That tells you what they thought about him too.
Speaker 4 (27:49):
Yeah, first versus Miles Garrett five years ago.
Speaker 8 (27:54):
I mean, he is a talent. He's an elite talent
defensive lineman. And so I get it from the Browns
as you try to rebuild it. Browns ain't winning the
Super Bowl anytime soon. So I get it that they
Miles Garrett's got a shelf life of being elite the
way he is. We're going to keep this guy and
he's going to be elite for the next three to
(28:15):
five years. Yet we're not any contention to win a
Super Bowl. Let's bring in a guy that will grow
into Miles garrett shoes eventually and be hopefully the same
type of player. Yet we get extra draft picks and
we can build our roster along the way having a
guy that's dominant on the defensive line like Miles was.
Speaker 4 (28:36):
So I get it.
Speaker 8 (28:38):
I do get it from the Browns perspective because they're
not in contention, and you get it from the Rams,
you know, perspective, because they're going to win not only
just one, but I think multiple super Bowls in the
next two to three years. So let's go for it
now as less need as always says. So I think
it worked out for both sides. The only person probably
(28:59):
it's upset about this is Jared Verse. Yeah, leaving the
Rams to the Browns. Well, here's the thing, Kevin.
Speaker 1 (29:06):
You said he talked to Sam Presty, right, Yes, Sam
Presty told him how to handle it.
Speaker 4 (29:10):
Right.
Speaker 5 (29:11):
Well, he gave him a suggestion.
Speaker 4 (29:12):
Yeah, I gotta be honest.
Speaker 1 (29:14):
He could have called me. I could have told him
the same thing. He didn't have to talk to Sam Presty.
Get a guy that can play right now and draft picks.
Get a guy that you think is going to be good.
For somebody that good, and draft picks. I you know,
and maybe Sam Presty's a visionary, but it would just
make common sense to me. We're giving you this, it's
(29:35):
going to take a lot, and one of the things
that's going to take is somebody that can play and
could be good. So I thought everybody operated that way,
to be quite honest with you, when you're trying to
make it.
Speaker 8 (29:46):
Given where both teams are, it probably is a win
win for both teams. It is two hundred percent win
win for both teams. But I mean, if I'm making
a deal, I'm trying to get a guy back that
I think is pretty damn good or could be pretty
damn good, and draft picks.
Speaker 5 (30:03):
Everybody doesn't operate that way though, So true.
Speaker 1 (30:06):
Well, maybe that's why Sam Presty put that team together
in nobody else.
Speaker 8 (30:09):
Hands, which is why Mark Charity defensive player of the year.
I need everything for him. I don't. I'm not gonna
do this. Blah blah blah. They went specifically at dere
at Verse. I got draft pick. Okay, you're gonna give
me draft pick, but I want that guy that is
going to replace our defensive player of the year, and
they got him.
Speaker 2 (30:27):
So we talked last year about the fact that the
Kansas City Chiefs leaving Missouri and heading what did you say, Rodney,
like Kansas City downtown Kansas City, Kansas is like a
fifteen minute drive or something. Yeah if that, yeah, but
you're still leaving the state. So that's state revenue that's
going to be lost by Missouri. But regardless, so they're leaving.
We find out earlier today that the Chicago Bears, their
board of directors, did vote today to advance their stadium
(30:47):
development in Hammond, Indiana. We kind of talked about this
when it was initially proposed, I think maybe four or
five months ago, but this is the first time the
board has actually voted and approved the potential move of
the team out of Soldier Field and out of the
city of Chicago. So they voted for it. Apparently that
there's still a lifeline there for the state of Illinois
and Chicago to revive something, but as of right now,
(31:08):
it looks increasingly likely that Chicago Bears are going to
be moving to hammet Indiana.
Speaker 5 (31:12):
And no, they're not changing their name.
Speaker 2 (31:14):
The mayor of Hammond did point that out to They're
going to be the Chicago Bears are always Chicago Bears,
even if they happened to move to Hammond.
Speaker 4 (31:20):
Well, what happened to Arlington Park, Well.
Speaker 2 (31:23):
That was part of the proposal. That's the proposal that
they did not want.
Speaker 4 (31:27):
Well, I mean I thought that was the deal. I
bought the land, Yeah, I thought that was done deal.
Speaker 5 (31:32):
It is not a done deal at all.
Speaker 2 (31:34):
He has to do with taxpayer money and the people
in Chicago just didn't want to pay it.
Speaker 8 (31:38):
And nowadays it doesn't matter where you play it I
mean Giants have obviously Giants and jetson were playing in
Jersey for years and never thought of as his new
Jersey's Giants are jets you know Dallas, you know for
years played in Irving, Texas.
Speaker 4 (31:51):
They play whatever in Chrisco where I mean Chrisco headquarters,
but they're never.
Speaker 2 (31:56):
They're in Arlans and they're they're right down the street
from where the Rangers played.
Speaker 8 (32:00):
So you know, it's it's it's not that big a
deal as long as it's closed. The question is, do
the Bears now play Illinois taxes or Indiana taxes? And
if that's a difference, Well, you pay where you play, yeah, right, technically, yeah,
you pay where you play at Chicago. Your headquarters maybe
(32:23):
still in Chicago, though, Well all you gotta do is
put another building up by the stadium.
Speaker 4 (32:29):
Yeah, you pay where you play. You pay where you
operate your business from.
Speaker 1 (32:33):
If they've moved everything there and taxes will and I
guarantee you they're less in Indiana than.
Speaker 4 (32:38):
They are in Illinois. Yeah that's too. Yeah. See, here's
the thing.
Speaker 1 (32:42):
And in the state of California, you know, we don't
want to use public money for stuff like this, but
areas that don't have what major markets have want to
try and capture that. So Kansas City, Kansas City, Kansas, Yeah,
we're gonna we're gonna hook you up. We know ultimately
that's going to be good for us. Kansas City, Missouri,
(33:05):
State of Missouri. No, no, we're not going to do that.
And that said, it's like if you don't have something
you wanted and you're willing to make a sacrifice to
get it, or if you do have it, you feel
as if we've got it and we're not going to invest.
Speaker 8 (33:21):
Anymore in what do you think the Kansas City hotel
restaurant lobby is thinking right now about the people.
Speaker 4 (33:29):
And politicians in Missouri. They're pissed off.
Speaker 8 (33:34):
They're pissed off, and now Kansas is going to build
restaurants and hotels and everything you think about around that
stadium is the way stadiums.
Speaker 4 (33:42):
Are built now. It's not isolated anymore.
Speaker 8 (33:45):
Where you see a stadium in a wasteland and that's
the only thing that's around it is the stadium and
you got to drive twenty minutes and there's nothing around it.
Now there's always going to be something around the stadium.
And from an entertainment from a lodge standpoint. So now
those folks that were around era ahead benefiting from the
(34:05):
royals and the chiefs being right there getting all that business.
Speaker 4 (34:09):
I'm sure they're pissed off. I don't know, you're one
hundred percent right, you're one hundred percent right.
Speaker 2 (34:14):
Well, imagine a community like Hammond, Indiana, which I just
looked up as a population of seventy five thousand people. Oh,
what are they gonna get? What's that community gonna get
the financial boon? Leave a Chicago that has what three
million people or something like that.
Speaker 8 (34:27):
Oh yeah. If i'm someone I'm open up. If I
got a Chicago bar or whatever, I'm immediately going there
opening up a second joint from Hammon. Oh yeah, and
you know the way they'll build it. It would above
Later minute, Kevin it said the board approved it.
Speaker 2 (34:44):
Yeah, Like I said, there's still a lifeline for Chicago
and all these heights to still work.
Speaker 4 (34:48):
What they're doing is, you know, what they're using was
a stalking horse.
Speaker 5 (34:51):
To a degree.
Speaker 2 (34:52):
But they said the same thing about Kansas City, Kansas too.
A lot of people didn't think that was ever gonna happen.
And it's officially gonna happen. So I know it's a
negotiating ploy, but everything that the Bears are saying it
sounds like they're pretty damn serious about this.
Speaker 1 (35:03):
I gotta tell you, the Bears moving out of Illinois,
out of Chicago, to me, is a much bigger deal
than anybody going to Kansas City, Kansas, at.
Speaker 2 (35:12):
Least, I agree. But I'm not your as are acting
like it's just a negotiating ploy. I'm telling you that
from people believe this is actually, this could actually happen.
Speaker 4 (35:18):
Oh, I think I get that.
Speaker 8 (35:20):
But what Fred is saying is that the magnitude of
the deal going from Kansas City, which is one city
divided by a state line and a river in Kansas City,
because it's Kansas City, Kansas, Kansas City, Missouri's right there,
basically overlaps going to Kansas is a much lesser deal
(35:40):
than going from Illinois. Chicago is Illinois, Chicago, Illinois, right,
and going from there to going to Indiana. The closest
thing for Indiana to have the Illinois was Gary.
Speaker 4 (36:00):
Kevin.
Speaker 1 (36:00):
This, I'll tell you what this is. This is all right,
you guys better take it seriously. Now, look the board
to prove that we could even do this if we
thought we wanted to. So you better We're not gonna
say it again. You better take it seriously otherwise that's it.
That's what that message was today. You better take it seriously,
(36:21):
all right.
Speaker 2 (36:21):
I mean, if we're talking distance wise, and I understand
Chicago by the way, major metropolitan one of the biggest
markets in the entire country versus Hammond, Indiana, but distance
wise about thirty minutes, it's really not that far either.
So it sounds like this is more likely to happen
than not. Is the way that this is all shaping
up to you? But we'll see what happens.
Speaker 5 (36:40):
That's what's lighting up the headlines.
