Speaker 1 (00:00):
And we continue on Fred Rogan, Rodney Pete se La Sports.
We got another pair of Dodger tickets to give away
this hour.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Rodney. Oh, that's what we do, Fred. We're nothing but giffs.
That's all we do.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
So we're doing it, and we invite you to stay tuned.
We'll give you a cue to call for that.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
So we've got the Rams in Detroit on Sunday night,
and we got the Chargers at so far we gave
tickets away for that Sunday afternoon against the Raiders. You know,
I got to thinking when the Rams came back and
then the Chargers followed, there was interest and excitement about
(00:42):
football in Los Angeles. It had been gone for so long.
The majority of people here had adopted other teams. There
was still a ground swell for the Raiders, and obviously
they went to Vegas. The Chargers were the new kids
on the block, and the Rams did have a fan base,
but they were people that had been here in the past,
and they were older and in every market in the country,
(01:05):
and if you listen at a national sports talk radio,
they have been on this now for at least two months.
Football every day and it didn't matter who or where.
Storylines are always Aaron Rodgers, Jim Harbaugh now with the Chargers,
Brandon Ayuk finally signs for the forty nine ers.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Niners. Yeah, Dallas Cowboys in the news every.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
Year, prescotten his deal, right. I mean, those are national
stories and people talk about them day in and day out.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
And we don't do that here. We don't do it.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
No, we talk about the Dodgers because that is, you know,
number one on the list. Lakers are number two, and
everybody else kind of falls in place. If USC is good,
they're number three, and then really you talk about the
(02:02):
other stuff that goes on, But here it's Dodgers Lakers
in USC.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
Do you think that because the NFL left us and
left for such a long time, that there there's that
bitterness from a large part of the generation, large part
of the population, of well, they left us, We don't
(02:27):
we You know, you got to earn our respect back,
or you got to earn our love back. We're not
going to just jump right back into the NFL. I
think it was a case of apathy. You pointed this
out many times on the show. If you live here,
there's a lot to do. There are a lot of options.
(02:47):
If you have disposable income, there's a lot of ways
you can spend your money.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
And that's why people live here.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
I mean, granted, you know, the younger folks obviously grew
up here, maybe their parents are, But the reason why
a lot of people live here GRAVI eight here. And
this whole notion of everybody's leaving, Well, if everybody's leaving,
who are the people on the freeway.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
You know.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
Exactly, you know, if everybody's leaving, I don't see it anyway.
It is you're you're here, and there are a lot
of things to do. But we still people are still
passionate about the Dodgers, and I'm passionate about the Lakers
(03:32):
and still passionate about USC.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
But why not? Why is football taking the hit?
Speaker 1 (03:40):
Well, I think it was apathy after there wasn't a
team here for so long. I think people were bitter
beyond belief when the Raiders left. I think they were
really pissed. They were not as upset when the Rams left,
but when the Raiders.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
Left, when the Raiders went back up north, right, yeah, yeah, uh,
they were really really angry.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
And I think, you know, given another.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
They were angry at at al Davis or you think
they were angry at the politicians here in LA that
didn't get a stadium for the Raiders to keep them here.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Ultimately, I just think they were angry. I think over
the period of time, those that were upset with al
Davis and then those who were upset with the politicians,
it just morphed into they were upset.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
They were upset.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
And those flights on a Burbank Airport on Sunday morning
going up to the Oakland Colise and were jam packed.
Southwest made a ton of money. Yeah, they did a
ton of money. Everybody on those flights and they were
jam packed.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
Yeah, don't try to get a flight in the you know,
to the Bay area on Sunday Sunday.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Morning because those flights were jammed. So that was it.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
I believe that the NFL knew they muffed it big time,
muffed it big time. They never should have left this
market open. Ever, the second largest market in the country,
the entertainment capital of the world, and they left it open.
So when they brought Stan Kronkie back, and by the way, again,
(05:05):
if you don't believe it, believe it. When I was
all that talk about Carson, that was never happening ever,
not for one second. The NFL puts Stan Kronkie back
in LA.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
That was the deal. He was coming back. He had the.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
Money, he didn't need any help. He could pull it
off big time. He had Kevin Demoff to oversee everything.
He was coming back, and Rodney was involved in that
group with the Raiders trying to keep them in Oakland.
He was coming back. And I think they have done
everything perfectly. I think the Rams have done everything. The
(05:40):
textbook on how to start a new franchise is LAFC.
That is the textbook. Somebody needs to write the book
about exactly what they did to start a franchise because
they were masterful in what they did. The Rams, almost
to a t, were masterful in what they did. They
(06:01):
made big moves, they got out into the community, they
spent money, they did everything because the guy who's overseeing
it is from LA and knows what the market is
and it's really smart. They've been to the super Bowl.
It's remarkable. They've been to two two super Bowl they
(06:24):
won one.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Yeah, they won one.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
That's pretty remarkable. Just since they've been back. If that
happens in any other city in this country, they are
top of the page, top of the fold every day.
It's all about them. If you win a Super Bowl,
look here.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
You know that you know that to be true, Frick,
because I know I know guys that I'm very extremely
close to.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
That are still still.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
Making a living, making a killing off of the eighty
five Bears. The Bears won the Super Bowl in nineteen
eighty five and arguably the best defense ever with Buddy
Ryan and Ditka and all those guys. I know a
number of guys that are still making a killing. And
(07:15):
the fans in Chicago are still living on that Super
Bowl in nineteen eighty five, and we're looking at it.
You know, a franchise that has been to two in
what the last six years? Seven years, two one one,
(07:36):
and there's still there's not any kind of real frenzy
about it.
Speaker 1 (07:40):
The Rams lost Aaron Donald. Do you hear a pin
drop in the market? They lost the best offensive player
and get in the game, in the game, yeah, not
on the team, not in the conference, in the.
Speaker 2 (07:52):
Game, and arguably one of the top three in history.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
In history. You hear a pin drop? What if that
happened in Kansas City? What if that happened in New England.
What if that happened in New York, Well, you'd hear
talk about that. It's really been a slow build and
the Rams have done everything right. They have not missed
(08:17):
a step. Whether you like them or not, whether you
root for him or not, whether you like anybody on
that team or not, they've done it right.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
Now.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
The Chargers entered into the fray, and we know what
that was like when they played down a dignity Hell
Sports Park and the stories, and they had no fans
and people didn't want them, and they got the double whammy.
Not only were they not well known here, but people
(08:49):
wanted the Raiders. So they got the double whammy and
the bitterness and the vitriol. And no matter what you
think of Dean Spanos and that organization, they are trying
to do it right. Do they make some mistakes early on,
Absolutely they did. I think if you sat down and
talked to them, they would admit that they're honest people,
(09:11):
at least with us Rodney. They've always been honest. But
they are now trying to do it right. They got
out of their comfort zone. They hired Jim Harbaugh to
be the coach, and going into the season, he is
one of the storylines in the NFL. What can he do,
what will he do? What is his ability here and
(09:33):
how will he turn it around? What will his impact
be and how long will it take for him to
make that That's a major storyline. Do you understand this year,
going into the NFL season, you have two major storylines
and they're in your market. The Chargers become one because
of Jim Harbaugh. The Rams become one because last year
(09:56):
they surprised everybody and with good health and a little luck.
And we talked about this with Eric yesterday, Rodney, they
could be in the super Bowl conversation. They're certainly in
the playoff conversation. Two major storylines in this market, Rams, Chargers,
(10:17):
and I think USC gets more play.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
Yeah, I mean especially you know USC winning that game
against LSU. The build up for the USC LSU game.
I don't know about you, Fred, it feels like it's
twice as big as the build up for any for
the Chargers home opener against the Raiders and then the
(10:41):
Rams going back to Detroit. With the storyline of Stafford
going back to Detroit, it's like, oh, okay, whatever. But
the build up for USC in Vegas playing LSU was
was ten times bigger and this is you know, both
teams have a chance to do something special this year.
(11:03):
You know, we'll see what the Chargers in hardball. But
he is a he's the coach that everybody wanted coming
to town, superstar head coach and you know, a chance
to really turn that franchise really around because he's done
it wherever he's gone, whether it be you know, Universe
of San Diego, Stanford, you know San Francisco, Michigan, now
(11:27):
here in LA and then the Rams, you know, surprise
everybody get to the playoffs last year and have a
chance and probably one of the best five teams in
the league last year. Going into this year, everybody's excited, well,
at least internally around the country, people are talking about
the Rams being a force. Yet here in LA nobody's
(11:51):
talking about it. No, nobody's talking about it. It's gonna
be an interesting year as we get this one underway
on Sunday. By the way, if you're going to the
Charger Raider game, I'm not saying anything will happen, but
you should wear protective gear. What are you saying you
(12:11):
should wear a flack chack. I'm just saying what are
you saying?
Speaker 2 (12:15):
Fred? Wear a helmet saying interesting environment down at so fine, you.
Speaker 1 (12:20):
Don't come on, come on, Rodney, you don't know what's
gonna happen. All right, let's let's just do this over under,
over under your best guess how many? How many fights
will there be? Seventeen?
Speaker 2 (12:37):
No, I didn't mean in the first quarter the game, so,
oh my god, Yes, it's gonna be interesting. You know
you were not.
Speaker 1 (12:48):
I just have to ask you real quick before we
got to break because I wanted to ask you.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
You weren't on Monday. We were you on Monday? No? No,
we were okay, Monday, all right, holiday? Fred? Oh Tuesday, Tuesday? Right, Yeah,
you're lazy ass was not either. Okay, you know what
I wasn't as fine, Adam.
Speaker 1 (13:07):
I'm trying to ask Rodney a question, Adam, Okay, and
I remember if I asked him.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
I don't need that from you. Uh background all right?
Speaker 3 (13:20):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (13:21):
The USC game that was impressive.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (13:24):
You know, Miller Moss looked really poised. The defense played well.
My question is that's one game. Now with the expanded playoffs,
all of a sudden, if you're a us C fan,
you're You're like, we.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
Can get in, we can get in, but thinking we
can get in because it could be one loss, two loss,
and I don't think I really believe that this uh
the the well, you know, we'll see. But the l
s U team is going to be a pretty good team.
You know, when they start to go through their schedule
and they got to face you know, obviously tough competition.
(14:00):
I think they're going to be a very good team.
They got weapons and and you know the thing for USC,
LSU moved the ball on sc but the defense stopped
them in big situations, which is what they never did
the last couple of years. You know, third down and
inside the red zone they stopped them, you know, to
(14:20):
you know, the fourth down, they stopped them.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
Things like that.
Speaker 3 (14:23):
They came up with big plays on defense, which they
never did in the last couple of years. But I
think LSU is gonna be a good team. And it
was a big time, big time win for USC. And
if they you know, they obviously got Utah State tomorrow,
but if they can gain some momentum and they go
(14:45):
to ann Arbor in a couple of weeks and farewell
there against the Michigan team is trying to rebuild because
I think they're catching Michigan. Probably at the right time too.
They don't necessarily want to play Michigan in Layton no November.
As they start to figure things out and revamp after
you know, turnover of all the seniors leaving and Harball
(15:07):
leaving and all that stuff, it's a perfect time to
catch Michigan. They could gain some momentum, you know, and
they got Penn stayed at home. I mean, there's some
big games they got. But this could be a very
interesting year for USC, more so than I think a
lot of people believe that they could have.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
Don't forget we're giving away to Dodger ticket. Yeah we are.
We're doing it this hour, this hour. Somebody's going, oh,
we'll do it next hour as well. But when we
come back, let's bring on Vinnie Bond signor and get
into this Sunday's NFL games.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
Really don't care on a Friday, but it's all good.
Come on now. I'm excited about this NFL season, fed
from what we talked about last segment. Even if there
are a number of people in LA that aren't, they
still want to go to the beach. Maybe that's it.
Maybe it starts too soon. Maybe it's still you know,
(16:04):
early September. It's the sun still out and it's still
beach time. We're not ready for it yet.
Speaker 1 (16:10):
Well, I don't know what the temperature is going to
be Sunday, but if it's in the high nineties, I mean,
I don't think that's optimal weather for playing football.
Speaker 2 (16:18):
Let's bring out our good football weather. People say, oh,
it's got to be cold.
Speaker 3 (16:21):
It's just freezing and it's the late November December footbald,
it's football weather, is it?
Speaker 2 (16:27):
Well, no, you play it.
Speaker 1 (16:28):
I don't think it has to be freezing, but I
think ninety five degrees is probably.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
A little warm for football if you're a player.
Speaker 3 (16:35):
Yeah, but that's when training camp starts. A lot of
people say, oh, this is football time because it's hot
and humid and ready to go. Training camp's football time.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
Let's go.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
Well, let's go through our insider and our buddy Vinnie
bon Senior. Bennie, how you doing, man?
Speaker 4 (16:54):
I have degrees there's jacket weather. So that's downright cool,
you know, and not hot. Yes, everyone's talking about the
heat in Los Angeles. That's where the Raiders all up
in their season. Against the Chargers. So we're bracing for it.
But it does start actually tonight with Bishop Gorman Las
Vegas power against modern day. So you know, the high
school world is keeping an eye on that. And Rod,
(17:15):
I was thinking about you on Sunday over at the
Leeds of State and because that place was rocking and
rolling for usc LS. So thinking about you and all
the all the other you know, uh, proud Trojans because
that was a big night for Ussex.
Speaker 2 (17:28):
That was a big night. There was a big night listen.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
I know, look, LSU being in the South, you know,
Vegas for La folks is an easy trip.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
We come all the time.
Speaker 3 (17:38):
So for the for the folks at LSU, it was once,
you know, once in a two three year time of thing.
So they all traveled and I know they talked about,
oh it was you know, sixty percent LSU fans in
the stadiums. But what I saw around town and from
people that were showing me that the sc ban and
the sc folks were all around Vegas lighting it up,
(18:03):
man and then at the end of the day really
partying after the game. Because it was a great scene
for the for the Trojans, but the band and I'm
a big fan of the band.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
I followed the band all the time. But the band
was every in.
Speaker 3 (18:17):
Every single hotel playing Conquest, playing the fight song.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
They were everywhere around Vegas.
Speaker 4 (18:26):
Yeah, they were. They were at the Palms, they went
over to the win they were at full So anyone
that travels with UFC, I know when my family used
to come with me the USC games on the road,
the first thing they wanted to know on Saturday night
or Friday night for the game was where's the band
gets to be in? So it's always awesome. I love, love,
love college football, and in particular US. I watching us.
Speaker 1 (18:47):
All right, Betty, let's getting out of the NFL. And
we were just saying two of the major storylines in
the league this year Jim Higher ball with the Chargers
and are the Rams super Bowl contenders? So let's start
with your games Sunday Raiders Chargers. You look at the
game and you see what.
Speaker 4 (19:05):
Yeah, and right now, I kind of see a little
bit of a clouded picture because we're not quite sure
what you're gonna get with the Chargers. You know, it's
a new head coach, new offensive cordator, new defensive coordinator,
a lot of murkiness from the Chargers perspective, and then
you slip it over to the Raiders. I think I
think you have a good idea what they're going to
get defensively. All though they just lost Malcolm Coots to
(19:27):
a knee injury. That was pretty big news. I'm not
sure exactly how long he's going to be out, but
for sure he'll be out on Sunday against the Chargers.
And then really the biggest question for the Raiders is
what's the offense going to be all about? You know,
Gardner Minshew's the quarterback, a new offensive coordinator and Luke
KESSI what is that you know gonna How is that
going to all play out? So you've got teams that
want to do the same thing. They want to run
(19:49):
the ball, they want to dominate the line of scrimmage,
they want to be sound defensively, kind of hang their
hat on physicality. Antonio Pears and Jim Harbaugh kind of
cut from the same cloth as far as that goes.
But that's what they want to do. Are is either
team going to be able to do that? And which
team ultimately does is going to win that game on Sunday?
Speaker 3 (20:08):
Yeah, Vinnie, when you talk about the Raiders, I mean,
what what do you hang your hat on? What's the
strength of the Raiders When you go into the season,
Usually a team will go, you know, our running game
is is because top notch or or you know we
throw the ball. Our passing game is going to be
superior to most people and if we if we can
do that, we you know, we're usually better than folks.
Speaker 2 (20:28):
Or we stopped to run.
Speaker 3 (20:29):
Nobody can run on our defense, so nobody can pass
on our defense or our special teams are the best
in the league. When you look at the Raiders going
into this season, what do you think did they hang
their hat on? As we know this this group is
going to be consistent and we know we're better than
most teams we play when we enter any game.
Speaker 4 (20:50):
It's a it's a great question. I think they believe,
you know, based on last year, the defense, you know,
get the ninth fewest points in the game. You add
of Christian Wilkins to that and bringing back ten other starters.
It's a third year under Patrick Growm. You got Max
to Crosby, you got talent at all three levels. I
think they feel like the defense is what they can
(21:10):
that they can hang their hat on. But you know,
in this league, you still have to play offense. Offense.
I know, defense wins championships. We get it, we understand that,
but you better be able to score some points offensively,
and and and they want to be a team that
hangs their hat on a punishing you know, run game
was a mere white and the physical offensive line. But
(21:33):
it's one thing to want to be something. The question
is are they going to be able to be that?
And I don't think we're gonna know. We'll get a
pretty good idea on Sunday, but I don't think we
know sitting here on Friday, you know, forty eight hours
or so before the before the game, that's exactly what
they are going to be about. There's a lot of
hope that it is and that's what the plan is
to be. But but they have to go out there
(21:54):
and execute it. And I think that's what Sunday is.
That's why what's so fascinating about Sunday.
Speaker 1 (22:00):
Any do the Chargers got a honeymoon period here with
hardball if things start slowly, if it takes a while
this year, even if this year isn't what everybody wants
it to be, are they in it now?
Speaker 2 (22:12):
And there's going to be a honeymoon period.
Speaker 4 (22:14):
Yeah, there has to be, because first of all, where
do you turn after if you, if you, if you,
if you lose patience or you don't have any patients
or lose faith in in in Tim Harbor in year one,
where do you turn from there? I mean, he was
the hottest coach on the market, He's gone to a
Super Bowl, He's won a natural championship at Michigan. He
(22:34):
wins wherever he goes. It might take a little bit
of time, but if you're a Charger fan, you know
you have to give him that time to build the
roster the way the way he sees fit and and
to put the type of pieces that he needs to
have to win football games in place. He hasn't had
that opportunity in one off season. That's going to take
longer than that. But but I think what you're you're
(22:56):
probably going to see is a sound football team, a
physical football team, a team that tries to go about
it the right way. And and maybe this year is
about planting some of those seeds, uh for a future
harvest that that you know, for the Chargers and the
Super Bowl or making a Super Bowl run. I don't
know that that's gonna happen this year. And if and
if you're running out of patients in year one, because
(23:18):
that doesn't happen like that, I think that's that's foolish.
Speaker 3 (23:24):
Yeah, I mean you talk about job security, I don't
know if there's anyone in the league that has job
security like Jim Harball for the next four years. Because
you're right what you said, where did they go from there?
I mean, they hired the guy, so there is nothing
that can happen I think in the next four years
that would jeopardize Jim Harball being the coach. I mean,
(23:46):
they're not gonna They're not gonna move on, you know,
move on from here. And in terms of the going
back to the Raiders, any life after Josh Jacob's there,
everything's gonna be good going into this season, Gardner minshew
they feel comfortable with him? Or is this a or
(24:06):
is this a get through this season until we can
find our next franchise quarterback?
Speaker 2 (24:12):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (24:12):
Yeah, I mean I don't think there's any doubt that,
you know, when this season ends, they're going to be
right back in the quarterback business. I mean, they wanted
a trade to go get Jaydon Daniel last year. That
was Antonia Pierce's guy, going all the way back to
high school. But it wasn't going to happen. The Washington
Commanders aren't going to trade for number two to number thirteen.
They're just not going to do that. So, yes, it's
(24:33):
kind of at quarterback anyway. It's to get through this season,
try to win as many games as possible. There's things
go right, to take a collective effort. If things go right,
you know, maybe they can win nine to ten games,
you know, knock on the door of the playoffs. But
even if that were to happen, Rodney, I fully expect
the Raiders to start pursuing their quarterback in the future.
(24:53):
Maybe it's Dak Prescott, maybe it's a draft pick, maybe
it's your Doors Sanders, you know from from Colorado, or
one of the good young quarterbacks in the in the
college ranks. Because they know and they understand, you don't
win in this league without a superstar quarterback. And that
superstar quarterback isn't on their roster right now. I think
that's that's pretty clear. But yeah, Zamir White is the
(25:15):
replacement for Josh Jacobs. The good news is Zamir played
the last four games of last year and led to
the NFL and rushing during those four games and the
NFL in yards for Kerry in those four games. You know,
he's been sort of waiting in the wings. But anybody
who follows Georgia football understands that Zamir was a five
star recruit, the best running back in the country, and
(25:36):
his recruiting class helped Georgia, you know, win a national
championship there. So it wasn't for lack of talent that
he wasn't playing. It was just that Josh Jacobs was
the guy. But Zamir White's time now, and he showed
enough of a sample size last year to suggest that
that rugging back is going to be a pretty good
hands with severe White.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
Ayvan, I have never done this before. Can you hang
for a minute or do you have to go somewhere?
Speaker 4 (25:59):
I am right here, guys, All.
Speaker 1 (26:01):
Right, hang on, Vinnie, hang on. We're gonna get back

(27:01):
Thanks for hanging on, Vinnie. So let's go Rams Lions.
The matchup between Jared Goff Matthew Stafford. Stafford says that
I expect to be booting Detroit, so he's ready for that.
What do you think of that game?
Speaker 4 (27:14):
Yeah? I am really fascinated about this game. I'm not
going to say I'm going to rush through my work
working at the Sofi Stadium press box to get my
story done, get back to the hotel and watch this
one at five o'clock or five thirty. But I'm probably
going to be rocking through my work.
Speaker 3 (27:28):
You're very specific about with the time and all that
kind of stuff what you needed.
Speaker 4 (27:31):
To do about the game. I am so fascinated about
this game, without question. You know, I felt like the
Rams they had a chance to win that game last
year in the in the playoffs in Detroit, so you know,
I'm sure that they they have a little bit of
redemption or revenge on their mind. They've plowed I can't
imagine that that the ford, you know, the stadium is
(27:54):
going to be as loud as it was in that
NFC Championship game. I felt like the Rams handled their
business pretty well in that regard, so they should be
better for it in the repeat. I don't know. I
like the Rams in this game, and I feel like
this would be a really good tone center for them
if they could go to Detroit, went on the road,
you know, against a team that beat them in the
(28:15):
playoffs and went to the NFC Championship game. It was
this close to going to the Super Bowl. And I
think that, you know, for this Rams team, who as
we've talked about it a lot throughout the summer and
the offseason, I just feel like, if there's one team
that can chase down the forty nine ers this year,
it's the Los Angeles Rams. And what a better way
to get that journey started than going to Detroit and
(28:37):
winning a big football game.
Speaker 3 (28:38):
Yeah, I feel like it's all the pressures on Detroit.
You know, it's that home in Detroit, right, everybody, at
least most people are picking Detroit to go deep into
the playoffs. Is not get to the super Bowl this year?
Open it up against the Rams. And on top of that,
Matthew Stafford coming back to town. I think that puts
(29:01):
so much pressure on the Rams and Jared Golf for
that matter. And and by the way, I mentioned this
earlier in the week, how how proud I am of
Jared Golf and how he handled the whole situation, not
just being professional and things that have come out of
his voice and come out of his mouth, but.
Speaker 2 (29:18):
His play, his play. He could have easily went in
the tank.
Speaker 3 (29:21):
Vinny and just said, you know, you guys traded me
to this wasteland in Detroit, and now you know, the
hell with it. I can't believe you traded me here. Instead,
he thrived in Detroit and has put that team in
a position to be Super Bowl contenders. Man, what do
you think about Jared Golf's ascension and the way he
(29:43):
handled it and then Matthew Stafford going back there and
the pressure being on Detroit.
Speaker 4 (29:49):
Yeah, and you know, for those of us that were
covering the Rams when when you know they got back
to Los Angeles and Jared Goff obviously the number one
pick overall that year, and you know, you're not going
to be able to tell the new story of Los
Angele football without mentioning Jared Goff. I mean he helped
getting the Rams to the Super Bowl. What a couple
of years after they got to Los Angeles through three
years after they got to Los Angeles and he was
(30:09):
a big part of that. And it always, you know,
if you want to get an idea of how mentally
tough this guy is, first of all, look at his
first year in Los Angeles. But who's the six games
that he started? But go back to his college days,
Rodney put on his tape early in his career at
Cal where they were hapless. They were a terrible program
when he got there, and he got the snot beat
(30:30):
out of them, and I mean the beat out of him.
It was one of those crazy offenses where there wasn't
a whole lot of protection for him, and he would
get hit and get hit and get hit, and you
look at him and you're thinking, you know, six foot five, slender,
not that tough. But he was so physically tough and
mentally tough back at Cal, and then what he had
to go through early on in Los Angeles, then the
trade to Detroit, you know, helping the Rams come out
(30:53):
of nowhere. That was a bad football team when Jared
got first got to Los Angeles during the Super Bowl.
A couple of years later, he goes to a bad
football in Detroit and guess what, they're on the steps
of going to the Super Bowl what two years after that.
So I had never questioned Jared Goff's toughness physically, mentally,
all of that, and I too, am proud of him.
I haven't gotten to know him in Los Angeles and
(31:15):
kind of what he went through and who he is
as a person to do what he's done in Detroit
when everybody wrote him off except for a couple of people,
the head coach of Detroit, the general manager Brad Holmes,
who was in Los Angeles when they drafted Jared Goffs.
That wasn't a salary dump. That wasn't you know, we'll
just take on the money and go get our new quarterback.
After that, they had every idea of making Jared Goff
(31:36):
the you know, the franchise quarterback when everyone else was
laughing at him for some idiotic reason. I don't know why,
but I'm really happy for Jared Goff and the success
that he's had in a place that hasn't had a
whole lot of success. So tip of the cap to
Jared Goff and it's hard not to root for.
Speaker 1 (31:53):
Him, all right, And Vinnie, last night's game a season opener.
Pretty good game, don't you think?
Speaker 4 (31:59):
It was a great game. And as I was sitting
there watching it, and I just kept thinking to myself,
who who's going to slay that giant? What quarterback is
going to come along and you're gonna have to do this?
I'm just saying, some quarterback is going to have to
outplay of Patrick Mahomes in one of those big games,
and last night for the I think I think, I
think Lamar is one and five, one or four against
(32:21):
the against the Chiefs, And part of the problem is
is plays that he doesn't make. We saw two blatant
ones last night, including that third down where he had
a wide open wide receiver in the end zone and
just missed him. What quarterback in the AFC or the
NFL for that matter, is going to come along and
stand up to Patrick Mahomes and finally beat Patrick Mahomes.
There's one guy in the league right now that has
(32:42):
done that. That's Joe Burrow. He hasn't been able to
stay healthy. We'll see if that happens this year. But
he's literally the only guy that's beaten him when it counts,
and i last night didn't count necessarily. But it was
a big moment for Lamarro, it was a big moment
for the Baltimore Ravens. And he didn't get the job done.
He didn't get the job done in the AFC Championship game.
Josh Josh Allen didn't put the job done in Buffalo
in the earlier round in the playoffs. Who is it
(33:04):
gonna who is it gonna be Rodney in the NFL
to finally take him down. I don't know that there
is a quarterback right now in the league doing that.
Speaker 3 (33:13):
No, And it's not gonna be put it that way,
it's not gonna be, you know. And I think if
you get caught up into saying that, then you're never
going to be and a team that does that. First
of all, and I and I mentioned this is about
Lamar as much on the receiver than it was on
Lamar last night. That was past As a quarterback, you're
looking for a guy to kind of sit sit there
(33:34):
and not move in a in an open zone.
Speaker 2 (33:37):
But but to your point, it's it's a team effort.
Speaker 3 (33:41):
And if you go out and you're thinking, I gotta
outplay or I gotta be Patrick Mahomes, that is gonna
put you in a mindset that you got to outplay
him and force you know, bad situations and bad decisions.
It's gonna take a team out. It's gonna take more
so than that, it's gonna take the defense. Whoever is
the leaders on that defense go, We're shutting Patrick Mahomes
(34:04):
down and that offense down today, right, it's not gonna
be the quarterback that is gonna say I gotta outplay him,
because quarterbacks don't play against each other. It is gonna
be that defense or defensive coordinator says, I'm going to
hold them to twenty points. If I hold them to twenty,
can you get me twenty five? Can you get me
twenty two offense? And if I do that, then that's
(34:28):
the challenge. But you can't go in as a quarterback.
And I know this from playing. There were times when
I wanted to outplay the guy across from me, and
you start to do things in your mindset start to go, oh,
I got to force this ball in there because I
got to make a better play than he just made,
and that gets you in trouble.
Speaker 2 (34:45):
So it's gonna be a team set.
Speaker 3 (34:47):
But I think that that is the trap that a
lot of teams are gonna face themselves in throughout the season,
especially in the playoffs. It's like that quarterback is gonna go,
I gotta outplay Patrick Mahomes when you really you don't.
You just got to play your game and the defense
has got to be able to stop them.
Speaker 4 (35:05):
Yeah, I agree, but you know, well you got it.
It does feel like though you can't squander tenses even
as a quarterback. I know you're not playing against doctor Mall.
When the opportunities are there to make those critical players,
you just have to make them, because as he's shown,
I don't. It's just it's like I don't care what
the defense is doing. It's like it's it's I'm not
(35:27):
saying there isn't somebody that can shut him down, and
of course.
Speaker 3 (35:29):
Yeah, but what I'm saying is it's got to be
other guys. It's got to be your receivers. Whether it's Philadelphia,
whether it's whomever, whoever, it's got to be. It's got
to be uh be Ryan, It's got to be Jamar
Chase that that did it for for Cincinnati, making play
Joe brought through an interception. Jamar Chase went up and
made the play to make it a first in goal
(35:51):
to help them win that game, to send them to
the Super Bowl. I mean, it's got to be the
other guys that are saying we're going to make the
play in the right situation and the big situation to
make this happen, because if you do get caught up
into that, as Patrick Mahomes, I'm gonna outplay him, or
I'm gonna throw for more yards than him, I'm gonna
(36:13):
throw for what exactly does that mean? Is that throwing
for more yards? Is that throwing for more touchdowns? I mean,
what does that mean? You know at the end of
the day. So it is about playing consistent, playing yourself,
because you do start thinking that way, then you it's
gonna go the other way for you as opposed to
you out playing him.
Speaker 4 (36:33):
Yeah, there's no doubt about it. It's just it's it's
it's got to be discouraging for thirty one other teams.
You know when you see that, to me, the Chiefs
look like, you know, they didn't play a perfect game
by any sort of comagination that they were definitely beatable
last night. But you just always feel like, Okay, it's
an Andy Reid team, it's the Kansas City Chiefs. They're
gonna put it together as the season goes on, and
(36:53):
when it gets right down to it, they're gonna be
at the top of their game. And I feel like
when I look at that, that that that Chiefs team,
just even last night, you know, with with the new
wide receiver who scores down Yeah, I.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
Mean the guy you know, score two touchdown first touches
and all of a sudden, he's a superstar where you know,
people pass time and like you know, oh, he just
became the fastest guy to ever run at the combine.
But now he's making plays in the NFL because he's
in an environment that, oh god, that I got. Pat
Maholmes told me the ball, I'm gonna make some big
(37:25):
time plays for him. He's gonna continue tow me the ball.
Other teams have got to feel that, like I can
outplay those guys.
Speaker 4 (37:34):
Yeah, and what I'm sorry, but what were the Buffalo
Bill's thinking, like, like, that's like helping the Lakers or
something like that.
Speaker 2 (37:41):
Why would you do that? Why would you do that
in Buffalo?
Speaker 4 (37:44):
I don't know, but I'm sure there were there were
a whole bunch of general managers and coaches in this
league that were like, did you just do that?
Speaker 2 (37:49):
Far?
Speaker 4 (37:50):
We saw the effect last night that was it's gonna
get better speed.
Speaker 2 (37:55):
Kills, speed kills.
Speaker 3 (37:57):
And they did that in the first game, and like
you said, what do you think is gonna happen going forward?
Speaker 2 (38:03):
Now?
Speaker 3 (38:04):
Now the guy's got confidence and they all got confidence
in him. It's like Oh my god, they unleashed a
beast and this kid has got so much speed. It's
like we thought we got rid of Tyreek Hill. Now
they got another guy's faster.
Speaker 4 (38:18):
And it wasn't like it was like, you know, uh,
I don't know the Champaig Bucket. It's it's the Buffalo.
But you know you're gonna have to play you the
Buffalo Bills are gonna have to play the Kansas City
Chiefs at some point. If you want to get where
you want to get to, why would you help them?
I don't get it.
Speaker 1 (38:33):
