Speaker 1 (00:34):
What's Up? And welcome back to thirteen thirty one. I'm
your host, mister Ripper, and as always I have my
lovely co host here to help me with the One
the Only, introducing Todd of Thunder, What's Up? And the
Mistress of the Monsters.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
Lena, Hey, my little monsters.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
And we're back with another twenty twenty five movie review
with the Woman in the Yard.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
A woman in a yard.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
It's in the yard with fabric over her? Why is
she here? What is buttered sausage? Where does it come from?
Why do we like it anyway? Buttered sausage? What is it?
Where does it come from? I don't know? Do you
like it anyway? Sorry? I don't like. I don't like jam.
(01:24):
I like honey. I like kissing your lips. Once I
stuck a fork in a toaster and shock the shit
out of me, and I had the ability to smell colors. Well,
you didn't tune in to hear me in Thunder's very
spot on Gary Busky impersonations. You came here for the
woman in the yard that is draped in black. For
(01:45):
some reason, I keep want to calling this the woman
in Black. That's a two totally different movie. And a
totally different subject. We are going to kind of keep
this episode a little bit brief because it's going to
be a two shor episode for you. This this movie
has a very dark subject matter, and we think that
we're going to give you a personal opinion episode and
(02:09):
we're going to give you our review of this movie.
So what you're listening to now is going to be
our overall review of the movie as a movie, not
main subject, right, Lana, Yes, that's right. So diving into
this movie, what were y'all's initial thoughts of this movie?
Speaker 3 (02:26):
Well, when we went into the theater, I'll be completely honest,
I had a very negative mindset because when we watched
the trailer, I fully expected this to be one of
those films with trailer park syndrome.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
Yeah, very much, very much.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Honestly, I really thought that we had seen everything that
was going to be in the film. It seemed honestly
very boring. I was not looking forward to it at all.
But that for me couldn't be further from the truth.
Speaker 1 (02:51):
Yeah, mister Thunder, you were dreading this movie correct. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:55):
From the trailer, I thought it was very similar to
something like you would see in the nun I know,
the conjuring type of films and stuff like.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
That, and very very similar in the way it looks
and is shot.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
Yeah, I just thought, you know, it could be something,
but I.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
Didn't have high hopes.
Speaker 4 (03:14):
Then I thought a lot like you guys, that maybe
this is a film that the trailer just gave everything
away and it's just gonna be boring in the same
old hash of a haunted, spooky type of film.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
That's what I thought, spooky images, spooky lady. I didn't
have high hopes for this movie. Neither. We all came
into this with no expectation except for the dirt. It
was that far on the ground. Well, normally I passed
the synopsisis off, but today I'm going to task myself
with that. So the overall synopsis of this movie is
(03:52):
a family of three, a mother, a daughter, and a
son struggling with grief and the loss of a husband
and father. And that is the ride that this movie
takes us on, how this family is going through this
new world without their father and husband, and how they're
(04:12):
going to overcome this. The woman in the yard comes
out of nowhere with her chair. We don't know where
it came from. We do know where it comes from eventually,
but she's just sitting there and then that's when this
movie starts unfolding the layers of this like an onion
from Shrek.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
Oh yeah, And she's very cryptic with her words, and
we have to like kind of go along with this
ride to put together what she's saying that remotely makes
some type of sense.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
Yeah, we're trying to make sense of her riddles.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
What is she? What does she want? Is she there
to do?
Speaker 1 (04:50):
Why are these strange things? Muttered sausage? Well, to not
end on a sour note, we are going to dive
into the negatives real quick. So, miss Lana, negatives for
the Lady and the yard. You knew this was coming.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
You put me on the spot always. I thought you
weren't going to because you told me you were going to.
I thought that meant you weren't going to.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
Uh. Well, I was going to say I lied, but
I didn't.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
So that's hard for me.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
I wonder if my opinion on it is slightly enhanced
because of the fact that I was really dreading it
and then once I got in there, it captured my attention.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
I had a good time with it.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
I well, let me ask you this. Okay, miss Lana,
So in this movie, what were some things when you
were watching this or were there any things where you
were like, hmm, I didn't like that. Was it the
acting the cinematography? Were you on par for this movie?
Speaker 3 (05:49):
I was pretty on par for the acting. Definitely for
the cinematography. I do think that there could have been
a little bit more character development and backstory on the
family before the tragedy.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
So you're telling me that for the most part of
this movie, you are okay with this movie. You don't
really have a lot of negatives?
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Correct?
Speaker 1 (06:06):
Okay, mister Thunder, my negative brother from down Under. How
many negatives do you have for this movie or do you?
Speaker 4 (06:15):
I don't know. I haven't count them. I'm just gonna
tell him tell you that fifty they.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
Come to my head.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
Well, first of all, I could have used more skiers
in this film. This was promoted as a horror film,
and I feel like they had a base to do
quite a few jump scares or just creepiness.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
So you think it was a lot of missed opportunities.
Speaker 4 (06:41):
There's a lot of missed opportunities for atmosphere. They had
the visuals down pat they just did not have the
atmosphere in my opinion, even though I thought the score
was decent, it could have been better. At certain places,
it was very It was lacking a very ability tobe.
(07:03):
And like I said, they had the visuals down. You know,
we had this creepy woman in a black veil or
whatever she had owned and she had you know, at
times she could be very creepy and stuff like that.
Was she though, Well, that's my whole point. She could
have been creepy, I said, at times, you know she
(07:24):
could have been creepy.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
Well, that's what I'm asking.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Nerving. She was a little unnerving, unsettling.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
I don't think it was a missed opportunity. I don't
think it was nearly as enough. I didn't feel threatened
by her at all. I think when you first saw
her it was potential, especially when it's revealed. We've all
seen that scene in the trailer where she has the
blood on her hands. Basically that goes nowhere. You see that,
and I mean it does, but not significant enough.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
In my mind. It's because she ate a messy hot dog.
That's why she had kept.
Speaker 4 (07:57):
Or you know, she might be on one of those
monthly happy times that women have.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
So miss.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
With this.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
She said, you have a lot of positives, but can
you honestly say that the lady in black, or the
lady in the yard, or whatever you want to call her, whatever,
the woman, the lady, the hey lady in the yard.
Was she creepy? Was she spooky enough?
Speaker 3 (08:23):
I would agree with you, guys. I did feel like
she was unsettling in certain moments. But there was I
think a missed opportunity there too. They really could have
made her a lot more creepy than what they did.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
I think it was a missed opportunity of dread in
this movie when the subject matter is so heavy in
this movie that they really missed the ball on that one.
In saying that it didn't feel as tense as it
should have. It didn't feel like the build up was there.
(08:56):
It just kind of happened. It lacked a very common
horror element that horror movies really don't get right these days,
and that's the build up, the intense, the you know,
the suspense. It just wasn't there.
Speaker 4 (09:11):
Yeah, I feel like they could have spent the first
forty five minutes or an hour that we saw this
are building up tension and building up scene after scene
to lead us to that. But the first half she
literally just sets in the fucking yard.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
Yes, she is a lady that sits in a chair
and yells, I'm gonna get you. Now, she really doesn't
do that, and today's the day. Well, yeah, that's what
she says. In the movie.
Speaker 4 (09:42):
There were some scenes where they played around with the
shadows about how this woman can somehow use these shadows
to move objects or hit things like that.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
That's where her ability is, is the shadow realm.
Speaker 4 (09:59):
So yeah, but they we didn't nearly as much with
that as they could. They done like one or two
scenes maybe to spook a character or two.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
Well, this was Pg. Thirteen, which I think is crazy
for how dark the subject matter is in this movie.
Speaker 4 (10:15):
That you know, you still could give me some scares.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
You're right, and it didn't have that. But my biggest
takeaway from this movie is that the mother of this
movie did not feel like a mother to me. I
told you this walking out. I told Todd this in
the conversation that we had together, that she felt more
like a step mother than an actual mother to me.
(10:41):
The family dynamic wasn't there.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
Did it remind you of the step mom from.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
Cuckoo, how it is just very like, very much emotionally.
Speaker 1 (10:49):
Yeah, she wasn't there because she was well, but that's
so different. That's for the darker part of this subject.
I think that's where I understand why she's cut off
to her kids and her family. But there's nothing there
to show you that there is love and support and
(11:10):
like a good family at heart, right, And.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
I think that goes back to how I was saying,
they think it could have benefited from giving us a
little bit more backstory and family moments before everything started.
Speaker 1 (11:24):
Right, And I said the same thing to you too
about that. Yeah, I agree with that, and it didn't
give us that. And if you don't give us, like
I've said in the past, if you don't give me
anything to feel for, I'm not going to feel for
these people just because it's a mother of two children. Sorry,
(11:45):
I'm just not. You've got to make me feel for
these characters. You gotta work for the money, honey. Sorry,
That's just how it is. And I think that with
the subject of this movie, that was a pinnacle point
that was missed for me. But there are some positives
from the mistress of it here, So would you please
(12:07):
elaborate your positives.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
Yeah, I found it really interesting that I just came
off of working two twelve hour shifts in a row.
I was dog tired, we had no sleep. I fully expected,
like I said, I was stuck in that negative mindset
of this movie's gonna be shit, and instead not once
in this entire film that I feel like I was
(12:30):
gonna nod off, which happens to me a lot when
we go see a movie after I get off of work.
It kept my attention, and not in a like action
pack or any kind of way, is really for me,
more of just an emotional way. I really wanted to
figure out what was happening. It really had me guessing
of like what is this woman and what's gonna happen next?
(12:52):
And it wasn't an over the top type of tension,
you know. I know you guys feel like it could
have used a lot more of that.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
I did.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
For me, I felt a decent bit of tension, especially
for like a PG thirteen horror movie, enough so that
it kept me like really wanting to know, like what
where is this going? I felt like the pace was
spread out pretty well, like I didn't feel like we
were there forever. I felt like the acting overall was
pretty good. I'm not saying it was, you know, amazing,
but it was. It was pretty good for what it was.
(13:23):
And for me, one of the biggest positives I have
is the cinematography. Some of the shots that they did
were very intriguing and very captivating and in subtle ways
in a lot of that and I did you know,
Tad I think it was taught that mentioned or was
it you that mentioned the play with shadows, But I
thought that was a really interesting concept of the woman
(13:44):
and how she worked with shadows. It really captivated me emotionally,
more so than many horror movies ever have. And we're
not diving far into we just keep kind of referring
to it as the dark subject matter. But it was
very well done in my opinion on I appreciate the
way that they went about it, and I was very emotionally,
(14:06):
especially towards the end, had a lot of like like
is this about to happen kind of feelings if that
makes sense, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
That makes sense, mister Thunder. Is there any positive takeaways
for you?
Speaker 4 (14:19):
Well, this film did have something that I always enjoy
in films, which is isolation. This primarily takes place, with
the exception of a few flashback scenes, primarily at this
old farmhouse, which is cool because most of our classic
horror films can be traced back to an old farmhouse.
(14:43):
But anyway, I also liked most of the cinematography in
this film. I think a lot of the scenes looked
crisp and clean and clear. It was very much a
difference between night and day in this film. I didn't
not mind the fact that it got a little dark
in the film because they had no power in the house,
(15:07):
so you know, besides these little shitty flashlights, so that
didn't quite bother me. As far as the acting goes,
I didn't have a problem with how each actor carried
their role, regardless of what I felt about the character.
The actual person playing on my think probably did the
(15:28):
best that they could with what they had to work with.
And I think the little girl did very Welsh and
the teenage boy, I don't know. I guess it all
depends on how you raise your children or whatever, but
it seems that sometimes he was very anxious as a teenager,
and then at times he was very mature like, and
(15:51):
then at times he was very overwhelmed that shit, you know,
was placed on him. So I liked the journey with him.
So but other than that, without you know, saying, actually
what I think about the whole movie, I think those
were the big positives for me.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
My positive takeaway from the movie is the cinematography was
done very well. I quite enjoyed that. I did enjoy
the way they shot the dark subject matter and how
they convaded for someone who could understand from that perspective,
(16:30):
I think they've done a very good job for people
that go through that. That's pretty much my only positives
in this movie.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
A jump scared got you.
Speaker 1 (16:41):
Though, Okay, well, you know what, A clock's right at
least once a day, so and I only jumped because
you jump?
Speaker 3 (16:51):
Uh huh, No, that's not true, because I jumped like
four times and you only jumped once.
Speaker 4 (16:57):
My question is what made y'all jump? Because I didn't
jump at all.
Speaker 1 (17:02):
The mine was in the addict. One of the jump
skiers got me. I don't know, it just got me.
Speaker 4 (17:10):
I know.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
I actually can't remember what there was.
Speaker 3 (17:12):
Legitimately, probably three or four times that I jumped, but
I don't remember where they are now.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
Oh go ahead, No, I was just reacting to what
she just I just said. M Well, speaking of scares,
you know what scares me other people's ratings of this movie.
I'm serious. Well, as always, we tell you the ratings
before we give you our ratings. So jumping into the
Google audience ratings summary has this at a three point
(17:41):
zero out of five with three hundred and forty six
ratings at this time.
Speaker 2 (17:46):
Aha, it's just over halfway.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (17:49):
Our favorite gaming network over at IGN has this at
a seven out of ten. I'm DEBA or IMDb as
you know it out there in the world has this
at a five point six out of ten. So I'm
seeing kind of a common theme. Now where it gets
(18:10):
interesting is the tomatoes that are rotten. So, Miss Atlanta,
do you want to hear the tomato meter or the
popcorn meter? First?
Speaker 2 (18:21):
Tomatometer first, I want to hear the people last.
Speaker 1 (18:24):
Well, the tomato meter has this at a forty four percent.
I find that interesting and that's fifty reviews on that end.
With the popcorn Meter at five hundred plus verified ratings
has this at forty five percent.
Speaker 4 (18:44):
Wow, So there's not much difference at all.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
It is a one percent difference.
Speaker 4 (18:49):
Between the people and I'm not going to give them
any critic call them critics. Fucking there's no such thing
as a fucking legit movie critic.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
We're all critics.
Speaker 3 (19:02):
That is interesting though, because they I feel like they
usually are much more separated than that they are.
Speaker 1 (19:07):
That is literally pretty much down the middle, which I
find very interesting. Now, as always, we give you our
ratings after we give you the other critics ratings, but
today that's not going to be the subject. This is
going to be a two part episode, so you're gonna
have to tune into the second part to find out
(19:30):
our overall opinions and why we are going to give
you the ratings that we're going to give you because
we have to deep dive into the subject of this movie,
and that episode is going to be riddled with spoilers.
This was kind of a spoiler free episode if you noticed,
(19:52):
we were not giving anything out, so warning. The next
episode is going to talk about a very very taboo,
dark subject matter.
Speaker 4 (20:04):
It's going to be heavy, and like you said, we
wanted to keep this one straight to the point and
kind of be light hearted and just tell you a
little bit about what the movie was about.
Speaker 3 (20:15):
So if you're curious about what our ratings are. You're
going to have to listen to the next episode.
Speaker 1 (20:20):
Yes it will be the following week. Stay tuned for
part two. But as always, I'm ripper.
Speaker 4 (20:29):
And I'm tired of thunder saying.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
Tudalu by my little monsters.
Speaker 1 (20:34):
Stay spooky until next time.
