Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, cool, So we're gonna have a little fun
with this interview. I'm going to talk about, of course,
Midland coming here. So I'm talking here with Jess Carson,
one third of the Midland lead guitarist Jess, do you
want to tell the people a little bit about who
you are me personally? Yes?
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Yeah, Well I'm one of the three dudes that you
see in Midland.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
We started, Oh my gosh, yeah, you can just leave that.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Yeah, I'm leaving this in the in the interview. Okay,
I love it. I love the humanizing people.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Okay, well there's a there's a story. So yeah, we
just got back from a three week tour in Europe,
and of course on the way back, waiting at the
baggage carousel for my for my luggage, waiting and waiting,
and I'm there for like an hour and I'm the
last person there, and sure enough, pretty sure Airways lost
(00:55):
my bag. Oh so this is the guy just dropping
my bag off.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
Oh it did make it back to you.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Yeah, he finally somebody just brought my bag to me.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
So perfect.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Yeah, we're fresh off, fresh off that European tour we've
been We've been running.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
That jet lag must be intense.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Yeah, the jet lag plus just you know, we're in
a different country almost every day and plan playing a
show every night.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
So yeah, well we're glad to have you back in
al Paso because you Midland has been here twice already
and again you're coming back Thursday, October second at the
Cowtown Events Center that venues like super close to my house.
The openers William Beckman and uh, since you've been to
Alpaso twice, do you remember anything from being here, Well.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
We've been El passa many times.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
In fact, I would say that Midland was formed in
El Paso because the first thing we ever did as
Midland was recorded the Sonic Branch and that's what really yes, yeah,
so that's it's our origin story really is, like it
all kind of started I'll Pass. So the Sonic Sonic
Ranch album we we eventually finally released in twenty twenty,
(02:06):
which was kind of like you know, the original original
demos and stuff that we did out there.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
But that's that's how the band.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
That's the reason we're even here today is because we
all met up out there and you know, I'll pass.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
So you have a Sonic.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
Branch, you have a huge fan base here. I mean,
I'll PASSO loves you work so excited to have you back.
I myself have like a little contest on my personal
pages going I created a line dance to Glass half Empty,
So there's your yours that. Yeah, I made a line
dance for a drinking problem, but there's already like two
for it, so I made it to glass half empty.
(02:43):
I think it has more of that upbeat, faster vibe
that works for a line dance.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
So speaking of I'm going to go watch that, Oh
you should.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
I will definitely tag you and send it and you know,
if you guys want to learn it, I'll be dancing
it at your concert. I love line dancing. I love
to dance. So that song, it was a lot of
fun to do. And speaking of glass half Empty, that's
your latest single, What it like If people want to
send you a cheve like a drink, like, what fills
your glass? What kind of adult beverage do you like?
Speaker 3 (03:10):
Well?
Speaker 2 (03:11):
We like tequila, you know, we start Yeah, we started
a tequila company. Yeah, okay, yeah, it's a it's a
you know, natural agave, no additive.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
Tequila, so it's a healthy tequila.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
Yeah, crisp, oh it is.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Yeah, it's it's like very pure, super premium tequila. Cour
it's made down in Jalisco outside of Guadalajara. Yeah, it's
it's it's great. Yeah, it's you can buy it in
no passo and you know the name of it in
solo spell it I N s O L I t O.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
Okay, awesome, all right, so that way, uh, you know,
if if they're that there's there's a lot of tequilas
of course here that are made in I'll passle. So
if anyone's listening and want them to sample their their
drink of choices. The quila makes me angry, so I
don't really drink a lot of it. It does. Like
I don't drink a lot, period, But tequila makes me angry.
My husband, not other people. I'm super friendly with other
(04:17):
people with tequila. But I might sample a little bit
if if I can find some.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Yeah, if you're gonna send us a drink, I mean,
lately I'm into like blended margarita's.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
Well right across people. People think that the margarita originated here.
It actually originated right across the street in Mexico. But
of course, you know, we're basically you know, sister cities
with what is Mexico, so you'll get a good margarita here.
I can give you some recommendations on that too. Mm hm,
Americanized you want it, So maybe I'm gonna have I'm
(04:50):
gonna ask I have some fan questions actually, and one
of them is actually from my ten year old daughter,
but this one you actually, you actually have a fan
in Poland that I keep in contact with. And he
has a question about Mark's last name Wistrock. Did I
say that correct?
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Well, I mean here in America, you know, he says Wistrack.
But yeah, he's Polish.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
Okay, that was the question. That is awesome.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Yeah, he his grandparents I think, immigrated from Poland.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
Cool.
Speaker 4 (05:18):
And we were when we were on tour in Europe.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
You know, we had a tour bus and you take
that bus everywhere, you know, you get on these ferries
and you go across like the English Channel and stuff
like that. And but our drivers, the tour bus drivers
were from Poland.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
So they said vstrac that Vistrach.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
Oh my goodness, I'm gonna butcher that. Okay, I'll stick
to the Americanized version because I think I'll just get
that wrong everybody. But that is interesting. So that is
one of the questions. Another one, how did you get
the name Midland?
Speaker 2 (05:50):
Midland was kind of a combination of, you know, after
a Dwight Yoagum song fair to Midland, and then also
kind of the fact that we were all living in
different place And that's why I say sonic. You know,
El Paso kind of formed the band because Mark and
Cameron were in California and I was in Austin and
we kind of started, you know, we met sort of
(06:11):
in the middle, which kind of was like El Paso.
Speaker 3 (06:14):
Yeah. So it's also kind of like the Middland where
we all the middle come together.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
Perfect. There there's your origin, name story. Now this next
question I saw you all on. It was a video.
It was Worst Questions. So this is a fan question.
It's not one of mine, but I'm gonna ask you
for ask it anyway. It's about your style. I know
you get that question a lot, but the question from
the fan is your style is not like most country
(06:41):
artists we see, where do you get your fashion influence from?
Speaker 3 (06:46):
You know, for.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Whatever reason, the three of us kind of shop at
vintage stores.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Oh nice?
Speaker 3 (06:52):
So so not.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
I mean nothing against them, but we yeah, we brought
a lot of stuff at vintage stores, you know. So yeah,
it's kind of like, you know, I mean a lot
of denim, a lot of stuff that's been worn for decades,
you know, and it also it also comes out yeah,
and it also comes out looking I guess unique, because
(07:16):
you know, it's not you can't just go into a
store and him buy the exact same thing, you know, but.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
It's you know, it's like retro. You know.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
Yeah, we're stuff from the seventies and eighties, and.
Speaker 1 (07:28):
Well people love it. You guys are doing something right.
And just in case you're not aware, Alpasso has made
the official boot capital of Texas. So maybe not vintage,
but you I mean, we have a lot of uh
you know, we got Rocketbusters, we got Luke Casey Alex.
So if you guys have time, come in get some
of those custom boots while you're here.
Speaker 4 (07:48):
I know I've had a pair of I got a
pair of Rocketbusters.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
Oh and of course you know lu Casey's like they're
I mean, basically all of them are there at Tony
Lama Mamma, yeah, all the groups.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
So the last fan question I have is for my
ten year old daughter, and she wants to know because
the song she's most familiar with is Drinking Problem. She
wants to know what are the origins of that song?
What is the I guess inspiration for Drinking Problem.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
Well, it was, you know, that was the first time
we ever wrote with our now longtime collaborators, Shane McAnally
and Josh Osborne, and we wrote in the first two sessions.
Speaker 4 (08:33):
We wrote Drinking Problem and Burnout.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
With them, and.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
You know, that was like it was trying to write
something that was kind of this influenced by like our
kind of like seventies influences, this guy Gary Stewart and
then a lot of this this kind of like stuff
that was in the sort of I guess like late seventies,
early eighties so that we were listening to and yeah,
(09:03):
it's just yeah, that was the song that like opened
the door for us.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
Oh definitely, yeah, oh yeah, no, I'll pass what definitely
loves that song too.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
And right now there's a Spanish version, I know there is.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
I love that version. Yes, I was gonna see if
you're going to bring that up. So yes, if you're listening,
there is a Spanish version of that song. I'll try
and play a little bit of it on air, And
right now I have a few rapid fire questions that
are going to be a little bit more fun. If
you still have the time for me, maybe about another
five minutes, yeah, okay, all right, I have five questions here.
(09:38):
This is a would you rather all right? You ready?
Speaker 3 (09:41):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (09:41):
All right? Would you rather be on Dancing with the
Stars or mass Singer?
Speaker 4 (09:45):
I don't know what math singer is, but I'm gonna choose.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
That, Okay, Like nothing dancing maths Singer is. They come
out well, I mean once, if you google it, you
might choose the other one actually, but Mass Singer they
come out in these huge mascot style, elaborate costumes and
it's like ten different artists and there's three judges and
they have to guess who they think the artist is
that's singing these different songs. So it's actually pretty cool.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
Yeah that I'll choose that, all right?
Speaker 1 (10:11):
On that one's neat all right? Number two? Would you
rather be a judge on American Idol or a coach
on the Voice?
Speaker 3 (10:17):
Coach on the Voice?
Speaker 1 (10:18):
Okay? Number three? Superpower? Would you rather have the power
of invisibility or super strength?
Speaker 4 (10:24):
Hmm, super strength, super strength.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
Yes, two more. Would you rather fall on stage or
forget the lyrics or for in your case, I guess
forget you know what you're playing.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
Forget what I'm playing.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
I think Cameron falling on stage before and we'll all
let and forget it.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
Oh no, no, and hopefully not not this time. And
last one for would you rather? Would you rather build
a classic muscle car or buy a brand new sports
car or brand new car?
Speaker 3 (10:56):
Oh? Build a classic which car? Well? I have of
it's not a muscle car.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
I have an old pickup truck that's getting them like
restoring right now. Oh nice, which is like a money
pit at the moment, but it'll be it'll be cool
once it's done.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
I go, yeah, I would my favorite classic car if
I could build on a sixty nine or seventy Chevell
like just murder out.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
Oh that would be sweet.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
Yeah, sounds great.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
Since you are coming to all passo, I'm going to
give you a little Spanish test. I'm going to say
the name. I'm going to say the word in Spanish,
and then you see if you know what it is
in English, you're ready listo, yep, all right, yeah, we'll
start easy musika music. There you got, very good, guitara, guitar,
(11:43):
cervea beer. There you go. All right. These last two
are a little tougher vakero Cowboy very good. And last
one you should know this one. Come on, come on,
come on, I'll give you the spanglish version.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
Is that like a drink truck? Truck?
Speaker 1 (12:04):
You got also the good? All right, so I'm having
fun with you. I got one more, rapid Fire, and
then I'm gonna let you tell the people anything else
that you wish now rapid fire, this or that or
not this or that, but rapid Fire. Favorite sports team Astros,
oh nice. Favorite type of food Mexican food. Heck, yeah,
you're coming to the right place. Man. Favorite scary movie.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
Oh man.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
Probably probably the classic like Scream. Probably like those those movies.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
Yes, yes, those are the best ones. They're too gory.
From now, favorite actor or actress.
Speaker 3 (12:36):
Oh man? Favorite actor.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
I'm gonna go with Ben Foster because we just did
a we just cowboy yep, Cowboy?
Speaker 1 (12:44):
Nice? And a favorite non country song, oh Man, Like,
wait a minute, there's genres outside country.
Speaker 3 (12:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
Now I'm gonna say, uh, Bruce Springsteen.
Speaker 3 (12:56):

Speaker 1 (12:57):
Nice? Nice. And if you could bring one artist back
from the dead to play one gig, who would it be?
Speaker 3 (13:03):
Man Merle Haggard. M.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
That's a good one. That's a popular one. All right, Jess.
I have had a lot of fun doing this interview
with you. Is there anything else that you would like
to tell the people?
Speaker 2 (13:14):
Yeah, keeping keeping an ear out for new music. We've
been in the studio recording. We're gonna be releasing more songs.
