SPEAKER_00 (00:00):
Talk to me Tuesday here on X Naomi Bridge and the
Cap.
Join me every Tuesday for somereal issues, real conversation
as I answer some of those real XNaomi letters.

(00:25):
Hey my sexy people, well, welcome back to another Talk to
Me Tuesday here on X NaomiBridge and the Gap Podcast.
It's the first time here joiningme.
Well, welcome to the family.
This is where we get real, weget vulnerable, and we tackle
those questions that you've beentoo afraid to ask out loud.
But today we are diving into aquestion that I get asked all

(00:45):
the time.
Naomi, how do I know if I amready to date again?
Well, that's whether you'recoming out of a divorce, a
long-term relationship, oryou've been single for a while,
you're thinking about gettingback out there.
Well, this episode is for you.
So grab your favorite drink, getcomfortable, and let's talk
about it.

(01:16):
All right, so today's lettercomes from Marcus.
And Marcus, right, Dear Naomi,I've been divorced for about a
year and a half now.
My friends keep telling me Ineed to get back out there and
start dating again.
They've been pushing me todownload the apps, go to happy
hours, and my and put myself outthere.
And honestly, part of me wantsto.

(01:37):
I miss companionship.
I miss having someone to talk toat the end of the day.

But here's the thing (01:41):
I don't know if I'm actually ready.
Sometimes I feel fine, like I'vemoved on.
Other times I'm still angryabout the divorce.
I have two kids and I'm worriedabout how dating will affect
them.
Plus, I don't even know what I'mlooking for anymore.
My friend said I'm overthinkingit and that I'll never feel 100%
ready.
So so that I just jump in, butsometimes it doesn't feel right.

(02:05):
How do I know if I'm truly readyto date again or if I'm just
lonely looking for distraction,Marcus?
Well, Marcus, first of all, Iwant to say thank you for
writing in and thank you forbeing honest because what you
just described, there are somany people that are there right
now.
And I want you to know that youare asking the right questions.

(02:28):
So let's start here.
Let's start with the pressurethat you're feeling from your
friends.
Look, I get it.
I get it.
And I'm gonna tell you, theylove you.
The thing is, they want to seeyou happy.
They don't want to see yousitting at home alone every
weekend, but here's what theydon't understand.
Being single, it is not adisease that needs to be cured.

(02:54):
There's this idea in our culturethat if you are not actively
dating or in a relationship ormarried, that something is wrong
with you, that you areincomplete, that you need to get
back out there as quickly aspossible.
And that's just not true.
Your friends are operating fromtheir own perspective and their

(03:14):
own experience, but they're notliving in your life.
They're not co-parenting yourkids, they're not processing
your divorce, they're not theones who have to show up on
those dates and be vulnerablewith the stranger.
So while their attentions aregood, you don't owe it to
anyone.

(03:34):
Not your friends, not society, not even yourself today before
you're ready.
Now, Marcus, you mentionedsomething important.
You said some sometimes I feelfine, and other times I still
I'm still angry about thedivorce, right?
Well, that right there tells meeverything I need to know.
You're still processing, andthat's okay.

(03:57):
A year and a half might soundlike a long time, but healing
doesn't follow a calendar.
Not at all.
See, here's the truth.
If you're still angry, thenyou're not ready.
Not because anger is bad, butbecause that's unprocessed
anger, and it will show up inyour next relationship, it'll

(04:18):
show up as a defensive, aswalls, as projecting your
ex-behavior onto someone new whoreally don't deserve it.
And you don't want to bring thatenergy into a new connection.
Trust me, you don't.
So let's talk about the signsthat you're not ready to take.

(04:40):
Because Marcus, you need to hearthis, and honestly, everyone
else that's listening needs tohear this too.
Sign one you're still emotionalreactive with about your ex.
So if you're hearing their nameand it makes your blood pressure
rise, if you're still rehashingarguments in your head, if you

(05:01):
find yourself comparing everypotential partner to them, you
are not ready.
You are still in it.
And that's not fair to you oranyone that you will be dating.
And sign two, you don't knowwhat you want.

(05:22):
You said it yourself.
I don't even know what I'mlooking for anymore.
That's honest.
But here's the thing if youdon't know what you want, how
would you recognize when youfind it?
You just be swiping and matchingon dates, hoping something
clicks.
That's not a strategy.
That's just hoping that theuniverse does this work for you.

(05:49):
You're looking for someone tofill your void.
You mentioned missingcompanionship, missing having
someone to talk to at the end ofthe day.
And I hear you.
But if you're dating to feelloneliness, you're using people
as emotional band-aids, and thatis not fair to them.
You need to be okay withyourself by yourself before you

(06:13):
invite someone else in and signfor.
You're not willing to be fullyhonest.
This is a big one.
You see, if you're thinkingabout hiding your kids,
downplaying your divorce, orpresenting a version of yourself
that's not real, because yourversion of yourself that's not

(06:34):
real because you're worriedpeople won't want you, then you
gotta stop right there.
That's a sign that you're notready.
Because real connection requiresreal honesty.
And if you can't show up as yourfull self, baggish kids,
complications, and all, thenyou're setting yourself up for a

(06:55):
shallow, unfulfilledconnections.
And sign five.
You're dating because you thinkyou should.
If the main reason, if the mainreason that you're considering
dating is because your friendsare pushing you, or because you
feel like you're supposed to, orbecause you're tired of being
the only single one in yourfriends' group, that's not a

(07:19):
good enough reason.
You have to want it for yourselfand not for anyone else.
Now, I'm not saying you have tobe perfectly healed, completely
over your ex and have yourentire life figured out before
you date.
That's unrealistic.
But you do need to be in a placewhere you're emotionally

(07:40):
available, yeah, self-aware, andyou are ready to show up
authentically you.
So when are you ready to date?
Let's flip it.
What are the signs that you areready to date?
Sign one that you can talk aboutyour ex without emotions.

(08:01):
Not that you don't care, butthat you've processed it, that
you can tell the story of yourdivorce without anger,
bitterness or sadness takingover, that you've made peace
with what happened.
Learn the lesson and then moveforward.
That you're clear on what youwant, not just someone's nice or

(08:23):
someone who treats me well.
I'm talking Pacifics, I'mtalking about what are your
non-negotiables, what kind ofpartnerships are you looking
for?
What values matter the most toyou?
And if you can answer thosequestions clearly, then you are
in a much better place.

(08:46):
And sign three, that you areokay with being alone in this
one, Marcus, this one is huge.
Because if you are comfortablewith your own company, if you've
built a life that you enjoy, ifyou are not dating out of
desperation or loneliness, thenthat's when you're ready.

(09:09):
Because then you're choosing toshare your life with someone and
not needing them to complete it.
And sign for it, that you'rewilling to be fully honest, that
you are ready to put your realself out there, kids, divorce,
baggage, and all, and you're nottrying to hide or minimize the

(09:29):
complicated part of your life, that you're confident that the
right person would appreciateyour honesty, and you're okay
with letting go of anyone whodoesn't.
In sign five, you're excited andyou're not desperate.
There's a difference between I'mopen to meeting someone, and I

(09:49):
need to find someone.
If you are approaching datingwith curiosity, openness, and a
sense of possibility, ratherthan urgency or fear, that's a
green light.
In sign six, you've done theinner work.
I'm gonna say that again.
You've done the inner work.

(10:12):
You've gone to therapy, you readthe books, you journaled, you
reflected, you understand yourpatterns, you understand your
triggers, your role in the pastrelationship failures.
You're not looking for someoneto fix you or to save you, that
you've already done the workyourself.

(10:35):
Now, Marcus, based on yourletters, I don't think that
you're there yet.
And that's okay.
The fact that you're asking thequestion means you're self-aware
enough to know something's off.
So trust that instinct.
So, Marcus, if you're not readyto date yet, what should you do

(10:57):
instead?
First, give yourself permissionnot to date.
Tell your friends, I appreciateyour concern, but I'm taking
time to focus on myself rightnow.
You don't know, you don't oweanyone an explanation beyond
that.
And second, do the inner work.
If you're still angry about thedivorce, that's what you need to

(11:20):
address.
Consider therapy, journal aboutit, talk to a trusted friend or
a mentor, process those emotionsso they don't control you.
Third, get clear on what youwant.
Not what you think you shouldwant, but what you actually
want.
What kind of partner?
What kind of relationship youwant?

(11:42):
What are your deal breakers?
Write it down, get pacific, knowwhat it is.
Fourth, build a life you love.
Don't wait for a partner to makeyou happy.
Create happiness now.
Invest in your hobbies, yourfriendships, your kids, your
personal growth.
So when you're living a fulllife, joyful life as a single

(12:06):
person, you attract someone whoadds to that, not someone who
needs to complete you.
And fifth, focus on your kids.
You mentioned being worriedabout how dating will affect
them.
That tells me that you, thatthey are your priority, and
that's a beautiful thing.

(12:27):
So prioritize them, be present,co-parent well with them, model
healthy emotional processing forthem.
So when you do eventually date, they'll see a dad who's healed,
who's confident and ready, andthat'll make all the difference.

(12:47):
And here's the thing, Marcus.
When you do all of this, whenyou take the time to heal and
get clear and build a life youlove, dating becomes so much
easier because you are notdesperate, you're not settling,
and you're not trying to fill avoid.
You're simply open to sharingyour already full life with

(13:10):
someone who is worthy of it.
So, Marcus, here's the bottomline.
You ask, how do I know if I'mready to date again?
And the answer is this if youhave to ask, then you're
probably not.
So when you're truly ready, youwon't be questioning it.
You won't be feeling pressuredby your friends, you won't be

(13:32):
wondering if you're just lonelyor looking for distraction.
You will know.
Because you will feel solid inyourself.
You'll be clear on what you wantand you'll be excited to meet
someone from a place ofwholeness and not neediness.
So, right now, it sounds likeyou are still in a healing
place, and that's not a badthing.

(13:54):
It is a necessary thing.
So don't rush it.
Don't let anyone pressure youinto dating before you're ready.
Because when you do finally putyourself out there, you want it
to be right, right?
You want to show up as the bestversion of yourself, healed,
hold, and ready to buildsomething real with someone who

(14:15):
deserves you.
So take your time, Marcus.
Do the work, and when you areready, you will know when you
are ready.
That right person will be worththe wait.
Well, all right, my sexy people, that is it for today to talk to
me Tuesday.

wondering whether you're readyto date again, I want you to sit

(14:38):
with this episode and reallythink about those signs I
shared.
And I want you to be honest withyourself about where you are.
And if you realize that you'renot ready yet, that's okay.
Give yourself grace, giveyourself time, do the work
