Speaker 1 (00:00):
Here's a highlight from a recent episode of Booked on Rock.
We have Graham Parker and Jay Nackman, the author of
Ram Parker's Howl and Wind. I was telling my friend
I was going to be interviewing you, and she goes,
oh my god, this is forty That was the first
thing she said, So what did that do for? What
was that experience?

Speaker 2 (00:17):
So how did that all come about?

Speaker 1 (00:18):
By the way, But then also you know that that
got you some notice, people recognize you, right, well, yeah
it got.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
It was a really good career bump or life bump.
Really it was like have my first album, right, you know,
it was.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
A bit like that. This was like, wow, this excitement
is amazing. Man, great movie.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
By the way, For those who may not know, Graham
is in.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
That John Apatow and you know pul Rudd, who's he
talking to the Jewish Journal?

Speaker 4 (00:46):
The Jewish Journal.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
Apparently old Jews are the only ones who still buy
hard copy of records because they don't like to download
music because they don't know what downloading means. Why is
this album different from men other album?

Speaker 4 (01:02):
It isn't. What is he wearing? It's a hat with
the Oriole logo on it why. I don't think he's
being ironic. I think he just really likes Oreos.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
Look, Paul Westburg record did okay, Frank Black record did
all right?

Speaker 4 (01:14):
The haircut one hundred down so much.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
We have to break this record otherwise we're not here.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
Next year's oriole Man is coming Man to see Cookie
is the best.

Speaker 4 (01:24):
Yeah, Jewish journal guy loves the record.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Great.

Speaker 4 (01:28):
Got a bit of a problem, touch of gout. Gout. Yeah,
my whole family, they all had gout. Jesus, that's very unfortunately.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
My auntie Queeney, she had a foot like this is
like a size of a small pig.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
I've got a photo of it.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
I'd love to see that photo of that gout foot.

Speaker 4 (01:46):
And a couple of Bunyan's as well.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
Fuck, I've got to go to the podiatrist, and I
hope he can shoot me up with something.

Speaker 4 (01:52):
Yeah, well, let's let's get you to the pediatrist.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
II Graham, good.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
Luck with your goat.

Speaker 4 (02:00):
Baby.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
It was unbelievable.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
I just reformed the rumor by accident, and they were
going to Okay, they all agreed they were going to
come to the USA. I wanted to do it there
and a studio I'd worked out Struck by Lightning being
one of the records, and quite quite a few others.
I wanted to do the first reunion album there. And
within a week or two of doing that, John Appasow

(02:22):
got a hold of my new publishing company and they
said he wants to talk to you. I said, come on,
give me okay email and I said, I'll meet you anywhere.
Jud And because he used Love Gets You Twisted in
one of his shows, it's called Undeclared. Fantastic show actually,
along with Freaks and Geeks, TV shows that never made

(02:43):
it big because they were too good and TV networks
didn't really regret show.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
Yeah, there were.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
Great shows and I missed them entirely until my song
had been used, and then I discovered Freaks and Geeks.
I think it came before Undeclared. And so Judd is
a big fan of lots of artists. I mean, I'm
just one of the many. But he saw the potential
of me acting this guy who destroys the record company
by dint of his spectacular unpopularity, and he's like, yeah,

(03:12):
I'm in my sixties. It was the record company in
Unfiltered Record Paul Runn's record label has also signed hair
Cut one hundred apparently, and you know, Frank Black without
the main focus of his music, which is the Bigxies,
you know, and he signed all these losers potentially and really,

(03:36):
and I thought, oh, I can kill this role.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
This is me.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
I can destroy a record company just like that man,
no problem.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
And so it was a great bump. It was a
wonderful thing.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
And they were I was turning up at all these
things at some big hall in New York with all
the half most of the cast of the actors being
flown first class.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
This is years after.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Hollywood, to be at the Billboard building with artists and
talking about music and film like I know anything blessing
my way. So oh great, I get a lot of
free food, a first class hotel, in the first class flight.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Yeah bring it, you know.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
And whenever I'd be out in England anywhere and a
few people say it's Gray and Parker and they'd look
me up. Oh yeah, I saw the movie. Young people,
young people like twenty year.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
Old, Oh yeah, you're the guy who ruined that agency records.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
My neighbors in the here in London, their kids were
watching the TV. They were watching the They didn't know
much about me. They knew something to do with music.
They were watching the TV one night and This Is
forty came.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
On and they were like, it's great, it's next door.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
And the kids were really little. From then on, those
kids were like hiding from me. So there's a movie
starff you know. Now they're great, big tall men and
they're like, you know, is that just that stupid geezer ol?

Speaker 2 (05:00):
The bumbles round and
