Welcome back to entertain Me. This is a show where
we cover all things entertainment from SoCal to the silver screen.
And the entertainment stories don't get much bigger than the
Academy Awards. And I had the pleasure of attending the
Academy Awards this year. Well, I say attending, I actually
went for work. I think it would be a completely
(00:22):
different experience to go as a guest. When you go
while you're working, you have to show up hours early
to get through security. We park a couple miles away
from the venue, then we're shuttled over. You go through
layers of security, You set up on the red carpet
and wait for the nominees, presenters and everybody to arrive.
(00:44):
So it's a completely different experience than for the people
who show up in their limos and get dropped off
at the door and have their picture taken. That being said,
there's an energy to it. It's so much fun to
be at the Academy Awards where people are celebrating the
best in film, and being in Hollywood, being in Southern California.
(01:06):
The film industry is such an important industry here. So
many people's livelihoods, careers all of it have been centered
around and built on this industry. So it's fun. It's
fun to go and celebrated. It's a joy to go
and celebrate. And you know, and some people say, oh,
you know, the actors, they already get too much attention,
(01:29):
too much money. We shouldn't, you know, puff up their
egos anymore. And I understand that. I get that perspective,
but I will say, having also been an actor, I
see both sides of this coin. And most actors and listen,
I've interviewed, known, met, worked with thousands of actors in
(01:51):
my career, and I can tell you that most actors
just genuinely want to entertain. They want to tell a story,
they want to perform, They want to make you laugh,
they want to make you cry feel something using their talent.
And to have a night where that talent of the
(02:13):
best of the best is being celebrated is an honor
and it's fun and it's history, and I think those
are things that shouldn't be forgotten. And it's also jobs.
The Academy Awards are jobs. There are hundreds of people
working behind the scenes to set everything up, from you know,
(02:35):
the hair and makeup teams, the glam teams, if you will,
to all the crew members that set up everything, security, publicists,
they all work on these award shows. They're all getting paid.
So that's jobs and money and you know that sort
of thing. Anyway, before I get too into the weeds
about why I love the Academy Awards, you know, from
(02:56):
a more of a business ease standpoint, I love the
Academy of because it's it's Hollywood's pomp and circumstance. It's
beautiful dresses, it's funny, it's lighthearted moments, you know, not
taking itself too seriously. And of course you to see
superstars Leonardo DiCaprio, Hello, Michael B. Jordan, Nicole Kidman, Demi
(03:19):
Moore like all of these incredible actors were there, and
it was just a joy to be there. And I also,
you know, this was a different kind of Academy Awards
for me because I went into the press room this year,
and I don't usually do that. I usually go and
just cover the red carpet and then I go and
I put all my stories together either at home or
(03:41):
at the station or you know, whatever it is. But
this year I went into the interview room, the press
room where all of the winners go after they've won
their award and they answer questions from the press. There
are hundreds of members of the press in this ballroom
(04:01):
at the Loew's Theater. All of them have their own
assigned seats. They're set up with their laptops, you know whatever,
but there's no recording inside. You're not allowed to record
with any personal devices.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Like.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
Security was very strict about it. So they have a
pool camera set up, which just basically is one camera
that everybody can kind of use that records the nominees
and winner, or the winners rather not the nominees, the
winners as they come in the room. So it's packed.
(04:35):
Everyone's having coffee, they're having some snacks. We're waiting for
the winners to come in. We're also watching the show
live while it's happening in the press room, and it's
just a very different way to watch the show and
I'm glad I get to experience that this year as well.
I enjoyed it. I thought Conan O'Brien was wonderful. I
(04:56):
thought that there were definitely some memorable moments. I love
seeing Michael b Win, Amy Madigan. It was just, you
know what, I'm just gonna I'm gonna go and I'm
gonna talk to Gary and Shannon about I'm gonna let
you guys hear my conversation with Gary and Shannon about it.
It's always fun when I get to sit down and
talk with Gary and Shannon because they truly have an

understanding and a passion for entertainment as well, just like me.
So yeah, here's my post Oscars breakdown on the Gary
and Shannon Show.

The Oscars wrapped up the party last night.

Heather Brooker was there.

I really felt like a princess in and I was like,
I want to dress up.

In previous years, I wore stuff that felt very practical,
very like I'm working, total whatever, And this year I
was like, good girl, Like I was so glad you
wore that one.

Like it just it looks so great. And I know
I'm not supposed to compare, but I was watching the
Oscars how There's stress is.
Speaker 4 (06:01):
Still my favorite.

I'm honored to be the last human host of the
Academy Award yeah, yeah, next year it's going to be
a way mow.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
And it's tough.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
I get distracted when I look at his face still.
I don't know why, because he strends me. It just
his the composition, all of it distracts me. But I
just felt kind of like I didn't think he was
that funny.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
I thought the bits are too long, it was not biting.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
I mean I think that. Yeah, when you look back
at things that Ricky Gervais did, the Golden Glow, Ricky,
there's a one of the things I would assume one
of the reasons I don't like the Oscars as much
as I probably should is because that's a room full
of very arrogant people. And he did make one comment
(06:53):
kind of about that. But it's also this let's I mean,
we're say it, We're just making We're making fun stuff
like we're making even though even the most what what
was the sentimental uh eedimental values, even the most like
Ridict even Hamnet right, just gripping and dramatic and it's
(07:17):
heart wrenching, but it's entertainment.
Speaker 3 (07:19):
That's the thing I had a very large feeling of
they all take themselves way too seriously, and I feel
like I get that dose every year when I tune
into the oscars.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
But you were like, now, you guys both look at
me like speaking of taking themselves seriously.
Speaker 4 (07:36):
But you were there, what's the fuck out?
Speaker 1 (07:38):
Here's what I will say. I will say, yes, there
are probably some people that take themselves too seriously, but
I also look at it from the actor side of myself,
who is like, these are this is their job. You
know some people probably say, you guys take yourself too seriously.
Well maybe not.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
You can say a lot of things about me that
ain't want them, but like, it's.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
The it's their job, it's their career. It's something they
spend time going to classes and acting and perfecting and
trying to get better, and also like, yeah, make money
and make a living out. So there is that element
of it where they want to you know, some of them,
I'm sure want to be like, this is my craft,
this is what I have worked on, and I'm so
proud of what I did. There is also the element
of people who there's a lot of them who do

not take themselves that seriously. They know it's play. They
know they're pretending that it's a job, breaking pet what
a great. Honestly, I felt like that acceptance speech set
the tone. Yes, because she was there to have fun,
but she's also been doing this for forty years. Talk
about a movie star. And also Ed Harris is.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
Her husband, lost the same the same.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
I'm like, I just love Ed Harris. So that was
such a joyful tone and a great way to start
the show. And I think that sort of carried through
some moments for me that were really great, obviously, Amy Madigan.
Michael B. Jordan's speech, I thought he was very humbled.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
She won Supporting Actress from Monsters. He won Best Actor
for Sinners, his dual role.
Speaker 4 (09:08):
His speech was Chef's Kiss.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
It was great.
Speaker 4 (09:11):
I loved it.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
He seemed very humbled, genuinely surprised because honestly, there was
a lot of people thought it might go to Leo,
and so that was one of the surprises of the night.
In such a great surprise.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
Or Chalo may as well and Kevin O'Leary made one
made a great point that the voting for best for
for Actor was done before opened his mouth about the
whole ballet and all that stuff, and I thought that
was interesting that that there Michael B. Jordan was put

up there. I mean, was was nominated. Incredible job, although
I didn't necessarily think it was fantastic as the two guys.
Speaker 4 (09:51):
Did you guys catch Misty Copeland?
Speaker 3 (09:53):
Yes, no, Yeah, comes out of retirement the prima Ballerina
and performed during one of the musical.
Speaker 4 (10:02):
I think it was for sinners.
Speaker 1 (10:03):
Yeah, I was for sinners. One note about that is
I thought a lot of people were like, ooh, did
they do that just because of Chala May And no,
that was already planned. That was something that was already planned.
So I thought that was really interesting. Maybe she had
a little extra oomph his way.
Speaker 4 (10:18):
Well, he laughed it off.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
Tonan made the opening joke about the heat from the
he joked, he laughed off. But I did think with
Best Actor and Best Picture, something had to give. One
was going to get one and one was going to
get the other. And they decided Michael B. Jordan would
get Best Actor and the battle after another, which get
the rare.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
That it's the same, Yeah, it's rare.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
Because Leo didn't get it right, like, yeah, those were
apparently my husband's off both.
Speaker 4 (10:42):
Of so they were both really great performances. It was
just different.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
It was very they're very two very different movies with
different acting, different casts. Listen, you know people are divided
on one battle after another. A lot of people didn't
see it. It wasn't like a critical hit in the
way that Sinners was. Sinners was a joke or not.
I mean it made a billion dollars in the first
like three or four.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
Weeks because critically and yes, critically acclaimed and a good
money maker.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
Yes exactly. I think Warner Brothers was surprised even they
didn't know what they had on their hands with Sinners.
But one ball out for another didn't really resonate with people.
It didn't have that same oop at the box office.
So just two very different movies. I thought they were
both incredibly acted, incredibly well acted, and a couple other
like it was fun to see Grogu. You know, a

little puppetry there with Kate Hudson, that cheesy moment ABC's
promoting the Mandalorian and Grogu.
Speaker 4 (11:34):
I was gonna say, is there something new with Gregu?
Speaker 1 (11:36):
That's a movie coming out in huge movie. Yeah, it's
gonna be He was very cute. I was like, ah,
little puppetry.
Speaker 4 (11:42):
I do like a little Grogu, a.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
Little Grogu and that was a fun moment. All of
the performances were wonderful. The K Pop dem Hunters where
I've never seen them have audience do something interactive during
a performance, So that was really neat.

It was cool.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
I want to talk to you about You mentioned it preciently,
so the forty seconds that people have to make their
speech on Friday when we spoke and we all saw
how hard that was. Obviously we all saw how hard
that was last night.

I feel like they stopped.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
Playing people off with the music at one point.
Speaker 4 (12:16):
They did after they Yeah, there was a miss app
with the Cordion winners. We'll get into all of that.

Also, what stuck out to you in terms of dresses
or red carpet moments as well.

All right, we're talking with Heather Brooker regarding last night's
Academy Awards. One Battle after another one Best Picture, also
Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
Yes, sixth total for one Battle after another. Really big
night for them and for Paul Thomas Anderson. And then
Sinners won four as well, so and then Frankenstein I
believe one, three or four.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
Rob Reiner's tribute was voiced by Billy crystal. He came out.
As soon as he was announced. My wife said, I'm
going to cry. I just announced it to the room,
which is just me and the dog, but we both
gave her a space.
Speaker 6 (13:02):
For us who had the privilege of working with and
knowing him and loving him. All we can say is, buddy,
what fun we had storming the castle.
Speaker 4 (13:14):
Oh my god.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
The people that came out stood on the stage at that,
you know, everybody that'd been in his movies and things.
It was really great.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
It was a good It was a beautiful moment and
a fitting tribute to whether you agreed with his politics
or not, the man had an indelible impact on cinema
and movies that we've loved, the movies that we grew
up with and will continue to watch.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
For You could argue that there's he had, you know,
three movies in every decade that that would be iconic,
that would you know that would end up in the
top one hundred movies of all time.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
Absolutely absolutely, so that was a great tribute. They also
had a lot of reunions during the show last night,
like the Bridesmaids reunion, which, to your point earlier, Shannon,
was a bit that went on way too long, and
not just because my nemesis was in it, but because
No I love.

Speaker 1 (14:06):
That was a bit that went on way too long,
and that time could have been used for people's acceptance speech.

So the controversy about cutting off K pop demon Hunters
when winning musical group.

Yeah, that did happen, and also happened I think with
this short. Was it animated short? Yeah, the animated short
where there was two winners. I hope I'm not getting
my award mixed. And I didn't know there could be
a tie. Yeah, there can be a tie. That was
a very years or something yea, yeah, very weird.

Like how they did that where they're like, we're gonna
announce one, they'll do the speech, and then we'll announce
the other.
Speaker 4 (14:44):
So everyone's just on pins and needles. Are we the
other winner? We the other winner? Through the whole first
people's speech.
Speaker 1 (14:49):
I wonder if they told if they tell them ahead
of time, like if there's a tie, here's what you do.
Who Male Newton Gianni, who was doing the announcing for
that award, looked genuinely stunned, like.
Speaker 4 (14:59):
Oh he was funny. I thought he was funny.

But I do think they should have called them both
up at once, let one speak and then let the
other speak. Yeah, that was kind of an awkward, not
super great moment for them.

The best dressed you have the opportunity to see people
show up.

I did.

I loved Demi Moore's dress and I was like, oh,
she looks like a peacock, so many feathers. It was green.
She's going through her bird era.

I just loved it because it was different. It wasn't
your typical jess McClintock style dressed.

But yeah, it was like those everybody else kind of
feel like they had a little bit of like they
were boring. But she was like, I'm gonna go out there.
I love everything Nicole Kitten wears to me. She is
a movie star.

Her face, Yeah, distracting again, distracting.

I thought the same thing I said, she looks like Ryan.
She got the Meg Ryan package from twilight Zone. What
do you want number eight or do you want number six?

We talk about women in their faces but you know what,
I feel sad that they think that they have to
do all that. So these are beautiful women, goful just
the way they're gonna, like I it is.

It's kind of like what we were talking about on Friday,
the pressure that they feel in some part of their life,
in some part of their team or world or whatever,
to look a certain way. And it's not just women
in the movies, because but they are the most visible
to us, you know, it's women in life in general
feel like they want to look a certain way. And
I'm torn on the as you because I'm like, if
what I say is he.

If it makes you, if you happy and feel exactly,
do exactly. But then you know, you look at We're
just talking about Steve Gregory off the air. He still
wants to have sex with Helen Mirren, talks about it
all the time. Helen Mirren aged gracefully.

Here's what I will say. I will say, yes, there
are probably some people that take themselves too seriously, but
I also look at it from the actor side of myself,
who is like, these are this is their job. You
know some people probably say, you guys take yourself too seriously.
Well maybe not.

You can say a lot of things about me that
ain't want them, but like, it's.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
The it's their job, it's their career. It's something they
spend time going to classes and acting and perfecting and
trying to get better, and also like, yeah, make money
and make a living out. So there is that element
of it where they want to you know, some of them,
I'm sure want to be like, this is my craft,
this is what I have worked on, and I'm so
proud of what I did. There is also the element
of people who there's a lot of them who do

not take themselves that seriously. They know it's play. They
know they're pretending that it's a job, breaking pet what
a great. Honestly, I felt like that acceptance speech set
the tone. Yes, because she was there to have fun,
but she's also been doing this for forty years. Talk
about a movie star. And also Ed Harris is.

Her husband, lost the same the same.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
I'm like, I just love Ed Harris. So that was
such a joyful tone and a great way to start
the show. And I think that sort of carried through
some moments for me that were really great, obviously, Amy Madigan.
Michael B. Jordan's speech, I thought he was very humbled.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
She won Supporting Actress from Monsters. He won Best Actor
for Sinners, his dual role.
Speaker 4 (09:08):
His speech was Chef's Kiss.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
It was great.
Speaker 4 (09:11):
I loved it.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
He seemed very humbled, genuinely surprised because honestly, there was
a lot of people thought it might go to Leo,
and so that was one of the surprises of the night.
In such a great surprise.

Or Chalo may as well and Kevin O'Leary made one
made a great point that the voting for best for
for Actor was done before opened his mouth about the
whole ballet and all that stuff, and I thought that
was interesting that that there Michael B. Jordan was put

up there. I mean, was was nominated. Incredible job, although
I didn't necessarily think it was fantastic as the two guys.

Did you guys catch Misty Copeland?
Speaker 3 (09:53):
Yes, no, Yeah, comes out of retirement the prima Ballerina
and performed during one of the musical.
Speaker 4 (10:02):
I think it was for sinners.
Speaker 1 (10:03):
Yeah, I was for sinners. One note about that is
I thought a lot of people were like, ooh, did
they do that just because of Chala May And no,
that was already planned. That was something that was already planned.
So I thought that was really interesting. Maybe she had
a little extra oomph his way.
Speaker 4 (10:18):
Well, he laughed it off.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
Tonan made the opening joke about the heat from the
he joked, he laughed off. But I did think with
Best Actor and Best Picture, something had to give. One
was going to get one and one was going to
get the other. And they decided Michael B. Jordan would
get Best Actor and the battle after another, which get
the rare.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
That it's the same, Yeah, it's rare.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
Because Leo didn't get it right, like, yeah, those were
apparently my husband's off both.
Speaker 4 (10:42):
Of so they were both really great performances. It was
just different.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
It was very they're very two very different movies with
different acting, different casts. Listen, you know people are divided
on one battle after another. A lot of people didn't
see it. It wasn't like a critical hit in the
way that Sinners was. Sinners was a joke or not.
I mean it made a billion dollars in the first
like three or four.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
Weeks because critically and yes, critically acclaimed and a good
money maker.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
Yes exactly. I think Warner Brothers was surprised even they
didn't know what they had on their hands with Sinners.
But one ball out for another didn't really resonate with people.
It didn't have that same oop at the box office.
So just two very different movies. I thought they were
both incredibly acted, incredibly well acted, and a couple other
like it was fun to see Grogu. You know, a

little puppetry there with Kate Hudson, that cheesy moment ABC's
promoting the Mandalorian and Grogu.
Speaker 4 (11:34):
I was gonna say, is there something new with Gregu?
Speaker 1 (11:36):
That's a movie coming out in huge movie. Yeah, it's
gonna be He was very cute. I was like, ah,
little puppetry.
Speaker 4 (11:42):
I do like a little Grogu, a.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
Little Grogu and that was a fun moment. All of
the performances were wonderful. The K Pop dem Hunters where
I've never seen them have audience do something interactive during
a performance, So that was really neat.
Speaker 4 (11:57):
It was cool.

I want to talk to you about You mentioned it preciently,
so the forty seconds that people have to make their
speech on Friday when we spoke and we all saw
how hard that was. Obviously we all saw how hard
that was last night.

I feel like they stopped.

Playing people off with the music at one point.
Speaker 4 (12:16):
They did after they Yeah, there was a miss app
with the Cordion winners. We'll get into all of that.

Also, what stuck out to you in terms of dresses
or red carpet moments as well.

All right, we're talking with Heather Brooker regarding last night's
Academy Awards. One Battle after another one Best Picture, also
Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson.

Yes, sixth total for one Battle after another. Really big
night for them and for Paul Thomas Anderson. And then
Sinners won four as well, so and then Frankenstein I
believe one, three or four.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
Rob Reiner's tribute was voiced by Billy crystal. He came out.
As soon as he was announced. My wife said, I'm
going to cry. I just announced it to the room,
which is just me and the dog, but we both
gave her a space.
Speaker 6 (13:02):
For us who had the privilege of working with and
knowing him and loving him. All we can say is, buddy,
what fun we had storming the castle.
Speaker 4 (13:14):
Oh my god.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
The people that came out stood on the stage at that,
you know, everybody that'd been in his movies and things.
It was really great.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
It was a good It was a beautiful moment and
a fitting tribute to whether you agreed with his politics
or not, the man had an indelible impact on cinema
and movies that we've loved, the movies that we grew
up with and will continue to watch.

For You could argue that there's he had, you know,
three movies in every decade that that would be iconic,
that would you know that would end up in the
top one hundred movies of all time.

Absolutely absolutely, so that was a great tribute. They also
had a lot of reunions during the show last night,
like the Bridesmaids reunion, which, to your point earlier, Shannon,
was a bit that went on way too long, and
not just because my nemesis was in it, but because

That was a bit that went on way too long,
and that time could have been used for people's acceptance speech.

So the controversy about cutting off K pop demon Hunters
when winning musical group.

Yeah, that did happen, and also happened I think with
this short. Was it animated short? Yeah, the animated short
where there was two winners. I hope I'm not getting
my award mixed. And I didn't know there could be
a tie. Yeah, there can be a tie. That was
a very years or something yea, yeah, very weird.

Like how they did that where they're like, we're gonna
announce one, they'll do the speech, and then we'll announce
the other.
Speaker 4 (14:44):
So everyone's just on pins and needles. Are we the
other winner? We the other winner? Through the whole first
people's speech.

I wonder if they told if they tell them ahead
of time, like if there's a tie, here's what you do.
Who Male Newton Gianni, who was doing the announcing for
that award, looked genuinely stunned, like.

Oh he was funny. I thought he was funny.

But I do think they should have called them both
up at once, let one speak and then let the
other speak. Yeah, that was kind of an awkward, not
super great moment for them.

The best dressed you have the opportunity to see people
show up.

I did.

I loved Demi Moore's dress and I was like, oh,
she looks like a peacock, so many feathers. It was green.
She's going through her bird era.

I just loved it because it was different. It wasn't
your typical jess McClintock style dressed.

But yeah, it was like those everybody else kind of
feel like they had a little bit of like they
were boring. But she was like, I'm gonna go out there.
I love everything Nicole Kitten wears to me. She is

I thought the same thing I said, she looks like Ryan.
She got the Meg Ryan package from twilight Zone. What

We talk about women in their faces but you know what,
I feel sad that they think that they have to
do all that. So these are beautiful women, goful just
the way they're gonna, like I it is.

It's kind of like what we were talking about on Friday,
the pressure that they feel in some part of their life,
in some part of their team or world or whatever,
to look a certain way. And it's not just women
in the movies, because but they are the most visible
to us, you know, it's women in life in general
feel like they want to look a certain way. And
I'm torn on the as you because I'm like, if
what I say is he.

If it makes you, if you happy and feel exactly,
do exactly. But then you know, you look at We're
just talking about Steve Gregory off the air. He still
wants to have sex with Helen Mirren, talks about it
