show where we talk about all things entertainment, from socau
to the silver screen. This week, we're talking about a
little bit of reality TV. Usually we dive into movies,
which we definitely do on Gary and Channing this week,
but we're also talking about what is going on on
the Bachelorette. Now. I am admittedly not a huge reality

TV person. I don't watch a lot of the Bachelorette,
but this story caught my attention just because it is
an unprecedented move from ABC to pull the Bachelorette off
the air after it's already been shot, produced and marketed
for months now. So we're going to talk about that
a little bit. We're also going to talk about what's
new at the box office this weekend. And the movie

everybody is talking about is Project Hail Mary. So let's
get into it this week on garyan Channon for the
Entertainment Report.

Hey, earlier, I was talking about Taylor Frankie Paul, who
was supposed to be the Bachelorette this season. Just yesterday,
Disney came out and officially announced they're pulling the entire seaton,
that the show is not happening, not at all.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
This is a hugely unprecedented move for ABC and Disney,
and they're losing tens of millions of dollars by doing
this because the show was already shot, already been produced
in the can and ready to roll out. And think
about all the marketing and everything that's been going into
this season. I was just at the Americana the other
night and there's her video of this woman plastered everywhere
(01:52):
on all the advertisements. So it's a huge move for
Disney to cancel this. I watched the video. I don't
know if you've talked about the video, but I watched
it and it was disturbing to watch. Now, you know,
we were saying earlier, we don't know what happened in
the moments before this video, and we don't know what
happened after a man I think the police were called
and she was arrested, but at moments after hours after

that video came out on TMZ. ABC pulled the plug,
so it was obviously disturbing enough for ABC to say
it's not worth it.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
For Yeah, but this is the part I don't quite
understand about the whole fiasco is going into it. People
had questions about from what I listen, I'm not a
huge Bachelor Nation guy, but I know that there were
people who had questions about this woman specifically like why
her that she's going to bring a lot of potential
problems to this. Obviously this comes out. Why does Disney

not have a security team that does betting a thorough
vetting of this?
Speaker 1 (02:50):
Honestly, this is a question that I ask every time
there is any sort of reality TV scandal or something
like this that happens. Who was casting these people? Are
Are they maybe hoping that, you know, a little bit
of scandal will get them, you know, more eyeballs, more clicks,
more views. This seems to be an obvious no brainer, though,

because we've known since twenty twenty three. This isn't like
something that just happened. This sincident happened in twenty twenty three.
She also was another on another reality show where there
was some controversies there as well. So I don't know
what the vetting process is like for reality TV shows
or at the network level, why they don't see red

flags when you're investing tens of millions of dollars.

I mean, part of it is there. We watch those
because of the conflesh, sure, but there's a difference between
personality conflict and somebody who's mixed up in what appears
to be craziness. I mean just awful domestic violence style craziness. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
For those who didn't see the video, it is on
temz and other places online you can find it, and
it shows this woman Taylor Frankie Paul and her then
partner I believe his name is Dakota Mortensen, and he
is seemingly like bending her off and pushing her away
from him while she is pulling his hair. She gets

him in a headlock at one point, and then she's
hurling furniture at him, cussing, swearing, and at one point
the furniture seems to hit a child that's in the room,
and you hear a child crying and you know, calling
out for a mommy. It's very disturbing to watch anybody.
And I don't know if this it must have just
come out yesterday. Like, I can't imagine if ABC had

seen this or known about it prior to that. That
absolutely I think would have stopped them in their tray.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
That's going to be an all. If it turns out
they did know about the vial and we're still planning
on going forth with it until it came out, somebody's
getting fired. I mean, imagine, imagine they get a couple
episodes into.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
This thing and then it comes out. Yeah, I think
they still would. They might have still pulled the plug. Like, honestly,
it is surprising that they would this because, as you
said there, reality TV is known for these big personalities,
these controversial people. But it's controlled chaos. That's what people
don't understand about reality TV. Everything you see is produced.
(05:14):
There is line producers, there's story producers, there's everybody there
that's saying, and now we're going to book this restaurant.
You can't just show up at a restaurant with a
bunch of middle aged ladies and give them a bunch
of booze without there being some control, some direction and
all of that.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
And it's all pre produced.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
So in those moments of chaos, it feels chaotic, and
you're like, oh my god, I can't believe they said that.
The producers know exactly what they're doing, and honestly, so
do the cast members. They know what they're doing, they
know they're going to be if they say something wild,
it's gonna.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Make the cut of the show. Yeah, and it goes
to none of It's really a deeper problem that we've
talked about before when it comes to reality TV is
that people just want to be famous for the sake
of being famous. They don't want to be famous for
doing anything good or doing anything spectacular. They just won't
be famous.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
Yeah, and that goes to you know, TikTok famous YouTubers.
Did you see this week? Oh my god, this is
my my beef, my tangent for the moment time. Okay,
did you see what happened at the Variety red carpet afterwards?
Speaker 2 (06:17):
There is a TikToker. His name is Jake Shane.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
He has been under fire all week because of his
wildly inappropriate off color and just in a you know,
not very professional questions of major celebrities. After the Oscars
and m Variety came out with a piece that was like,
why are we continuing to let influencers have access in

spaces like this that require some level of professionalism and decorum,
because he was making several of the interview subjects uncomfortable.
Even Chris Jenner goes, how did you get this job?
And if Chris Jenner is saying that to you, you
should check yourself. So it's it's really it's really.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Open up a lot of questions. I know, right, how
did you get this job?
Speaker 1 (07:03):
Excuse me, miss Jenner? That being said, Mama Jenner, I'm
here if you need another client. But it raises these
questions about people being in space like TikTokers and influencers
who truly are willing to do whatever they can, say
whatever they can to be famous, get those clicks, get
those eyeballs, and it loses any sort of you know,

reality or gravitas that that they might have in those situations.

It is from the same author who wrote the Martian
the Great Matt Damon movie based on the book. Obviously,
Andy Weir and Andy Weir wrote Project Hail Mary a
few years ago, and it is finally coming out. I
read the book last fall, absolutely loved it and can't

wait to see how they do this now. When I
read it, I knew Ryan Gosling was going to be
in the movie. They'd obviously already.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
You kind of picture him when you were reading it.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
Yeah, And it's written in such a way that it
was very easy to picture him in the role as
Mark Grace, Mark as Grace Rylan. Sure, I'll stick with
them Ryan Mark Grace's former picture, but he I mean,

I don't want to give away too much. It's you
can already figure out probably ninety percent of it. Ore
is dying, but so are all of the other stars
and he has to go try to figure out why
in order to save humanity. He Unfortunately, they gave this
away pretty quickly in the early trailers. He meets an
alien and they become buddies.

Well, it's such a big part of the movie that
you can't not you know, kind of.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
Trailer with that, not that the alien part, but especially
what it looked like. Now, again, the book is very
descriptive and you have your own ideas what it was,
but they showed it very early, which I thought was
kind of weird.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
You know, I did not read the book. I'm one
of the ones that did not read the book. But
you can't read well, it depends on the day. My
husband read the book. So we both went into this movie.
We saw it weeks ago and I've been dying to
talk to you about it ever since. So he's read
the book. I did not read the book. We both
went into it with different expectations and both absolutely loved it.

It's Lord and Miller directed, so it's got their signature
style and tone to it, and it's beautifully shot. My
husband says that it is very, very similar to the book.
So if you were a fan of the book, you
will enjoy the movie from that perspective.
Speaker 2 (10:09):
Does it go back and forth in time?
Speaker 1 (10:11):
The way it cuts back and forth, it tells the
whole movie in flashbacks, and it's not distracting at all.
It's kind of like revelatory. You're like, oh, that's why
he's on the ship. Oh that's why he has you
know this ability and Ryan Gosling. The whole movie is
Ryan Gosling. There are some cuts to other people and

other characters in the film. He is infinitely watchable in this,
but it's almost like it was just made for him.
It's not too much, it's not wacky, but he has
moments of humor and levity, and you feel his pain
and frustration and sadness and heartache at this situation he's
in in space, and it's just a beautiful performance.

Side question, go ahead, you're a woman?

Is he handsome? Oh? My god? Yes, okay, that's all I.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
He's sometimes in my celebrity hall pass with my husband.

Because he kind of strikes me as a little dopey. Now,
I'm sure if I met him, I would never say
that to his face. But but I mean, just in
terms of some of the lighthearted stuff that he's done
in the past. I think he's one of those actors.
Speaker 1 (11:18):
When we talked about earlier this week how some actors
take themselves really seriously. He's one of those actors that
does not take himself very.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
Seriously, and that's part of the attraction.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
Yeah, I think so. I think it's because he seems
very excuse me, attainable in terms of like friendship. Why
are you laughing?
Speaker 2 (11:35):
That was such a funny word. You think I could
get that? That's what you said, he's attainable. Let's say
we're at a bar.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
I get that, and there's free shots and he has
all of them, right, I'm I think I could get that.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
He's sitting there with his wife, Eva mend Mendez is fine,
and he looks at Heather and he's like, a hold
on a second, baby, what I'm sorry talking?

Do you see this Paul redheaded over there?
Speaker 2 (12:01):
Yaosa listen?

Crazier things that happened. He is very I mean attainable
in terms of like friendship. Relatable might be a better word.
Or he's a relatable kind of guy. He's a dad,
he loves his job, but he also doesn't seem to
take it seriously. He's so great in this movie. I'm
gonna say, I'm gonna call it now for this, I
think he's gonna get nominated for an Oscar for this.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
I wouldn't be surprised based on the if it's anywhere
close to what I expect it to be. I mean,
in my head, he's already done a great job, because
again I've read the book thinking of him doing it
and some of the stuff that I've seen, some of
the early trailer stuff, and then behind the scenes in
terms of how they produced it, how they shot you know,
(12:48):
internal basically spaceship stuff, and how they do that was
was really pretty fascinating, which doesn't say anything about his acting,
but everybody, even the special effects guys, talking about the
pros sense of putting together such a complicated movie like this,
that he was so gracious to them, yeah, and helpful
and had ideas and had you know, concrete thoughts about

how to make a shot better in you know, each
in a helpful way, in a very helpful way.
Speaker 1 (13:16):
Well, he's one of those actors that is unproblematic, Like
you know, you hear about actors that have scandals. I mean,
you know, we're talking about the batch rut thing, but
it also happens in actors with theaters with Shamalay Shamala Madeba.
He has, for the most part his entire career, which
started when he was like ten or eleven years old,
been unproblematic.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
Mickey mouse Club, right, yeah, well he was on Star Search.
What even before.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
McKey mouse Club with Brittany and Justin Timberlake. Yeah, he
was on Star Search. So he's been performing and doing
this his whole life and managed to find that balance
between keeping his personal life private and his public life
and his professional life separate. And I think that helps
with him being very grounded and relatable. But you're right,
the movie visually looks like it very complicated, but the

story is so engaging and interesting. You know, in a
time when we're here seeing so many sequels, so many
rehashes of legacy films, to see an original film beautifully
shot with humor, with heart, with moments of levity. Everybody
walked out of our screening smiling, And I have to say,
(14:24):
you know, people say you like every movie. I don't
like every movie. I don't like horror movies, but this
movie was one of the best movies I've seen in
a very long time, and I'm looking forward to seeing
it again.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
Good. I'll tell you what I think. I'll know. I'm
excited text but not just one of the best sci
fi movies, one of the best movies, I would say,
so yeah, it was great, it was great, excellent. Thank

Does it go back and forth in time?
Speaker 1 (10:11):
The way it cuts back and forth, it tells the
whole movie in flashbacks, and it's not distracting at all.
It's kind of like revelatory. You're like, oh, that's why
he's on the ship. Oh that's why he has you
know this ability and Ryan Gosling. The whole movie is
Ryan Gosling. There are some cuts to other people and
(10:32):
other characters in the film. He is infinitely watchable in this,
but it's almost like it was just made for him.
It's not too much, it's not wacky, but he has
moments of humor and levity, and you feel his pain
and frustration and sadness and heartache at this situation he's
in in space, and it's just a beautiful performance.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
Side question, go ahead, you're a woman?
Speaker 3 (10:57):
True?
Speaker 2 (10:58):
Is he handsome? Oh? My god? Yes, okay, that's all I.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
He's sometimes in my celebrity hall pass with my husband.
Speaker 2 (11:06):
Because he kind of strikes me as a little dopey. Now,
I'm sure if I met him, I would never say
that to his face. But but I mean, just in
terms of some of the lighthearted stuff that he's done
in the past. I think he's one of those actors.
Speaker 1 (11:18):
When we talked about earlier this week how some actors
take themselves really seriously. He's one of those actors that
does not take himself very.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
Seriously, and that's part of the attraction.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
Yeah, I think so. I think it's because he seems
very excuse me, attainable in terms of like friendship. Why
are you laughing?
Speaker 2 (11:35):
That was such a funny word. You think I could
get that? That's what you said, he's attainable. Let's say
we're at a bar.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
I get that, and there's free shots and he has
all of them, right, I'm I think I could get that.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
He's sitting there with his wife, Eva mend Mendez is fine,
and he looks at Heather and he's like, a hold
on a second, baby, what I'm sorry talking?
Speaker 1 (11:57):
Do you see this Paul redheaded over there?
Speaker 2 (12:01):
Yaosa listen?
Speaker 1 (12:04):
Crazier things that happened. He is very I mean attainable
in terms of like friendship. Relatable might be a better word.
Or he's a relatable kind of guy. He's a dad,
he loves his job, but he also doesn't seem to
take it seriously. He's so great in this movie. I'm
gonna say, I'm gonna call it now for this, I
think he's gonna get nominated for an Oscar for this.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
I wouldn't be surprised based on the if it's anywhere
close to what I expect it to be. I mean,
in my head, he's already done a great job, because
again I've read the book thinking of him doing it
and some of the stuff that I've seen, some of
the early trailer stuff, and then behind the scenes in
terms of how they produced it, how they shot you know,
(12:48):
internal basically spaceship stuff, and how they do that was
was really pretty fascinating, which doesn't say anything about his acting,
but everybody, even the special effects guys, talking about the
pros sense of putting together such a complicated movie like this,
that he was so gracious to them, yeah, and helpful
and had ideas and had you know, concrete thoughts about
(13:12):
how to make a shot better in you know, each
in a helpful way, in a very helpful way.
Speaker 1 (13:16):
Well, he's one of those actors that is unproblematic, Like
you know, you hear about actors that have scandals. I mean,
you know, we're talking about the batch rut thing, but
it also happens in actors with theaters with Shamalay Shamala Madeba.
He has, for the most part his entire career, which
started when he was like ten or eleven years old,
been unproblematic.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
Mickey mouse Club, right, yeah, well he was on Star Search.
What even before.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
McKey mouse Club with Brittany and Justin Timberlake. Yeah, he
was on Star Search. So he's been performing and doing
this his whole life and managed to find that balance
between keeping his personal life private and his public life
and his professional life separate. And I think that helps
with him being very grounded and relatable. But you're right,
the movie visually looks like it very complicated, but the
(14:01):
story is so engaging and interesting. You know, in a
time when we're here seeing so many sequels, so many
rehashes of legacy films, to see an original film beautifully
shot with humor, with heart, with moments of levity. Everybody
walked out of our screening smiling, And I have to say,
(14:24):
you know, people say you like every movie. I don't
like every movie. I don't like horror movies, but this
movie was one of the best movies I've seen in
a very long time, and I'm looking forward to seeing
it again.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
Good. I'll tell you what I think. I'll know. I'm
excited text but not just one of the best sci
fi movies, one of the best movies, I would say,
so yeah, it was great, it was great, excellent. Thank
you for everything.
