Speaker 1 (00:11):
Hello everybody, and welcome to a little addendum here for
the episode of lestat Broncos you just watched. You might
be wondering why the format and style got mixed up
on you all of a sudden. That's because Joey and
I pre recorded the episode that just preceded this little
(00:33):
thing I'm recording now, talking, you know, about some big
traits the Broncos could maybe consider. And then this morning,
Miles Garrett did the cool thing of requesting a trade,
which immediately dated our episode because we did not see
that coming and did not talk about Miles Garrett as
a result. So unfortunately Joey couldn't join me right now,
(00:56):
but I wanted to hop back in and just kind
to look at, uh, you know, what could a Miles
Garrett trade look like for the Broncos and should they
consider it really quick, just so we're not completely overlooking
a pretty big topic really quick. For those of you
(01:16):
who don't know, Miles Garrett has officially requested a trade
from the Cleveland Browns. That's very, very notable. Of course,
that said, it's also not a lock that he will
get traded. The Browns are in a horrible cap situation
and Trading Miles Garrett would cost them cap space because
(01:37):
of the dead cap situation, much like cutting Russell Wilson
hurt the Broncos cap situation. Again, the Browns aren't really
in a position to do more negative damage to their cap.
So that's going to be an interesting part of this.
H It's going to be something the Browns are extra
motivated not to do as a result of that. And
we're talking about a first ballot, no doubt Hall of
(02:00):
Famer in his prime, so they're already at a premium position,
so they're already pretty unwilling to trade him. So again,
those are important factors I think to consider in all this.
Should the Broncos do it, I think you should at
least call there's a reason Miles Garrett is already, at
(02:22):
age twenty nine, a first ballot, no doubt Hall of Famer.
He is a very unique talent. He has been the
best pass rusher, maybe the best defensive player of the
twenty twenties decade so far. Just looking at his first
team All pros and all that, he is, you know,
(02:42):
arguably the single most valuable non quarterback you could add,
maybe like Justin Jefferson or Jamar Chaser also in that conversation.
But that's really the three. Should the Broncos consider this again? Absolutely,
you call it's so rare piece like this becomes available,
and you need these star pieces as you try and
(03:04):
chase a Lombardi, you know, a big talking point as
we look at the Bengals and why do the Bengals
keep palling short? Well, they might need a little more
star power on top of Josh Allen, some other guys
who can dominate a play for you, you know, like the
Chiefs have with you know, not only Mahomes and Kelsey
and a really talented offensive line on offense, they've also
got some star defensive pieces with Chris Jones and Trent McDuffie.
(03:29):
You know, having those star pieces that can win a
given down for you is hugely important come the playoffs.
Miles Garrett fits that bill as a guy who can
go win a third and fourteen for you against Patrick
Mahomes and make what you know, against ninety percent of
the teams in the league is maybe a fifteen yard
conversion can make it a sack or a throwaway, because
(03:52):
Miles Garrett is just there faster than any other pass
rusher in the league, So you have to, I think
call about it now. That said, he's going to be
very expensive and maybe quite possibly too expensive for the Broncos. Again,
this is an amazing talent, the type that is very
(04:15):
rarely available. He's going to cost a lot. Some of
the perception I've seen in Broncos country about his value
is way way, way, way way off where it actually is.
You know, like what about Jonathan Cooper? And I think
someone said, like what Jonathan Cooper, Adam Trautman and a
(04:36):
second or something like that to me in my Twitter
comments is like, that's that you're getting laughed off the phone.
I think the floor is two first round picks, and
the only way you're not giving up two first round
picks is if you give up a first round pick
and a premium young asset that could be, you know,
equip you know, be the equivalent of a first round pick,
(05:00):
that could equate to a first round pick. So like
Nick Benito, right, you know, Miles Garrett is going to
have a very similar value to Certan. Yeah, he's a
few years older. He also plays a more valuable position
that teams are much more willing to pay a top
of the line value for he might even have better
trade value than Patrick Surtan. So picture, you know, when
(05:24):
you talk about it, Miles Garrett, trade idea picture what
you would have to be offered to feel cool about
the Broncos trading Pat Cirtan. Right, if the team offered
you a Jonathan Cooper type and an Adam Troutman type
and a even first round pick for certain, is that
getting it done for you? You know, I doubt a
(05:45):
lot of people in Broncos country would be happy with that.
So the price is going to be very very expensive,
might be two first round picks and you know, a
third or something like that. It's going to be very pricey,
and that's a that's extra painful for the Denver Broncos.
You know. One of the elements of trading picks is you're,
(06:05):
of course you're trading what's going to turn into a player,
but more than that, you're trading what will turn into
a highly drafted player on a cost controlled contract. First Round,
second round picks, even third round picks are some of
the best avenues teams have to acquiring surplus value players
that are better than the contract number they are playing on. Right,
(06:29):
the Broncos haven't had as many of those opportunities because
of the Sean Payton trade, because of the Russell Wilson trade.
So they're already hurting for those contracts that are providing
a lot of surplus value, which can allow you to
overspend in some of these areas. Taking away more premium
(06:50):
picks to go after a Miles Garrett I think would
be very very difficult for me. For the Broncos. I
think you want to think if you could get him
for let's say a first round pick, Nick Benito, and
then maybe something else like that, the first round pick
in the Nick Benito or the foundation of the deal.
(07:12):
I could get around that twentieth overall pick this year.
It's nice, but it's you know, it's something the Broncos
could part with. And then Nick Benito, Yes, he's young
in costs controlled for one more year, but after that year,
you're going to have to give him a Miles Garrett
esque deal, which maybe why the Browns wouldn't be interested
in it. But this is a world where I think
(07:34):
it works for the Broncos. If the Browns were interested
in that, I think the Broncos could talk themselves into it.
You know, we're going to be devoting this money to
this roster spot, slash this position. Anyways, why not do
that with a player we know is literally the best
in the world at it as opposed to a guy
(07:54):
who's had one pretty good, really good season. You know,
this was by far the best year of Nick Bonnito's career,
and he was maybe as good as Miles Garrett in
a down year. And no insult to Nick Neto, it
was an awesome season. He deserved the defensive Player of
the Year hype, but his best still couldn't quite equal
(08:15):
like an average Miles Garrett season, So that's something to consider. Again.
I think that's what it would have to look like
for the Broncos if I had to bet where Miles
Garrett lands. I think it's more likely a team like
the Bills, like the Lions, who can talk themselves into
we are this one piece away, where the Broncos needs
(08:36):
some more building along with that one piece. Nonetheless, again,
anytime a player like this comes available, you got to
call on it, you know, and I know a lot
of Broncos Country is not a fan of the Broncos
making another really expensive trade after how damaging the Russell
Wilson deal was. And I think that makes sense. But
(08:59):
as Broncos pursue, you know, chasing down the Kansas City
Chiefs or the Buffalo Bills in this conference, they're going
to have to add some star pieces, maybe a star receiver,
you know, maybe a star pass rusher, you know, start
running back whatever. And you know, if they're consistently picking
in the late teams or twenties, it's going to be
hard to find that you know, legit number one receiver
(09:22):
or whatever that that upgrade on, like a Nick Bonnito
type that can be your real, you know, game changing
pass rusher that you never take off the field or
you never want to take off the field. The best
avenue to acquire those things at a point here is
(09:43):
probably going to be some sort of massive trade. Teams
do not let pieces like that hit free agency. You know,
when they do hit free agency, like t Higgins, you
know you're gonna have twenty teams bidding on him. It's
going to be very hard to win that bidding war
even when they do become available. Um and you know,
(10:07):
you can find him after pick twenty in the draft,
but it's a strategy that probably isn't worth banking on.
That you're just going to find like, you're all pro
receiver after pick twenty. Has it happened, Yes, plenty of
the receivers that are currently all pros went after pick twenty.
You're better off, you know, targeting the CD Lambs, the
Justin Jefferson's of the world. I guess he was right
(10:28):
after pick twenty, but you know what I mean, it's
hard to find those guys. Um, So yeah, I think
that's something to keep in mind because I prickle at
the idea of the Broncos making another massive trade. But
when I do think about it a little more, it's like, uh,
you know, this is maybe the only way to feel
confident they're getting bo Nicks this level of weapon to
(10:50):
help his development, you know, like a Garrett Wilson for example.
All Right, I think that'll do it for this everyone.
Check out my article. I am writing it right now.
Already a few trades in. I was teasing that there
were nine in that episode I just did with Joey.
Because of this Miles Garett thing, I've added a tenth,
which is the Miles Garrett one. So even more in
(11:12):
depth thoughts on that than what I just gave in
this little eleven minute add on. Anyways, thank you all
for supporting the show, for stopping by, for watching us.
It means a lot to me, Joey and Brie. I
know our schedules have been rough over these past few weeks,
maybe even months. A lot of that is admittedly my fault,
(11:34):
but we are working hard to find a long term
solution to that. You know, pre recording for a show
like tonight it is, you know, something where we're working
to do to try and get you guys these shows
regularly because we really love doing them and just need
to find a way to make it work with our schedule.
But so again, yeah, thank you all, Thanks for liking
(11:55):
the show, thanks for commenting. Means a lot to us all.
Have a great rest of your Monday night. O
