What's Up one and welcomes Positive popculture podcast and the multiverse metal Core Nerves.
Each week I have a guest fromthe podcast your music community. We
talk about the latest and greatest entertainment. I'm Earl Sean Mott. Today we're
talking about the Mandalorians and season threefinale. My host this week is James
of The Resistance Broadcast. Welcome tothe show man, What is up?
Man? I'm excited to be here. I like the metalcore cross over too.
Yes, thank you, thank youso much. I'm very excited to
(00:35):
have you here. Big shout outto our now mutual friend Alex from Sea
of Treachery. Right. He toldtold me an awesome story of how he
met you and then talked about mypodcast, and big shout out to him
because that's the reason that's happening.Yeah. Yeah, no, that was
That was a crazy day because Ijust kind of walked into that store and
(00:55):
I don't even know what it was, but I commented about something about being
in a band and they were like, oh, you know, hey,
you want a band like that orwere or whatever, and then it just
like flew from there. Because Isay my band name, they knew they
knew that the band and everything, and then we just talked for like an
hour or so. Yeah, wehad to we had to share numbers and
keep communicating. So it was cool. Pond meeting you via the internet,
(01:18):
saw what podcasts you hosted, andI was like, ohow, I've heard
of this podcast. I wonder whyI've heard of this podcast. And I
looked at your co host who wereboth on the Shmowdown, which if anyone
listeners before, they know that.I loved the Showdown when it was a
thing, so I was like,oh, wow, that's why I've heard
of it. So that's really cooltoo as well. I don't know if
you were watching any of the StarWars modown stuff that shit, Well I
definitely did. Yeah, I meanI was. I was part of the
(01:41):
Smowdown to the degree of I wasinvolved in like the early expansion. Oh
then they got drafted and I didn't, so so I was like, okay,
well you know what, like letlet them do it. And I'm
I'm in a way like I'm sortof envious of what they they were able
to do as far as like youknow, exposure and make new friends and
(02:04):
be a part of it and allthat because it was really cool. But
the other, the other end ofit is like all the studying, all
the scheduling, you know, itwas just like I'm glad that I didn't
have to do that because it justended up being like a really heavy thing
that I was like, I don'tthink I would do well, Like I
know Star Wars, but I don'tknow Star Wars to like a competitive level
(02:25):
like that. And I much enjoyedwatching it, and in another way,
like sort of reaping the benefits oflike the friends that they made. I
also then get to meet at celebrationand you have that too, so I
sort of ting gently stayed away fromand also sort of what's connected with Smartin
(02:46):
as well. I always loved it, even from the very beginning when it
was just movie. Yeah. Yeah, So I can understand your kind of
relief in not being involved in thatbecause I consider myself up pretty knowledgeable in
Star Wars. But those questions makeme feel like I've never watched Star Wars
in my life, right, yeah, some of them. I know Star
(03:06):
Wars more than like every one ofmy friends not in the Star Wars community.
But as soon as you cross thatline, oh gosh, it is
Yeah, it's wild. But ifyou are newon metal Corners, there returning.

can imagine. But this is howthe show breaks down. Each week.
We talk about the lays and greatestnerd news, and then we go into
our now watching section recommend you theaudience will you should be watching in theaters
and or streaming. They aga intoour main topic, which again is the
Mandalorian. But first things first isthe Metal Core Nerds Song of the Week.
The song of the Week this weekis from the band Sleep Sculptor.
(03:51):
This is the first track off theirnew album, Divine Recalibration. This is
Shattered Nerve back, I fled omy God, I got mine Watch,
(04:19):
I will time eyes, I've alwaysflowers going to die man, I never
(04:50):
ever alive, Alive, shout starteddown my light side, Survive you why
(05:16):
that job day? Again? Thatwas Sleep Sculptor with Shattered Nerve. Their
(06:09):
new album, Divine Recalibration, comesout on April twenty eighth on Silent Pendulum
Records. More on the topic ofmetal Corps have to talk about this,
knock Loose played Coachella has to bea pretty big defining moment for heavy music.
I don't know if I've talked aboutthis on the show before, but
the first time I saw knock Loose, I played with them in a garage
(06:30):
in Indianapolis and they I think openedthe show or played very early. I
think Isaac was like sixteen at thetime, insane. And then my band
ghost Ship they actually got They playedthree of our last like Northeast shows as
we were breaking up, and atthat moment, I was like, you
guys are going to be massive, and now they are. Yeah, it's
(06:53):
really cool to see a band whostayed insanely heavy and is playing the stuff
they're playing and being totally being acceptedand continuing to go upward. It's it's
incredible. Yeah. From my heavymusic background, that was always really surprising,
because even when we started, weknew there was like a cap on
(07:14):
how big heavy music could get,and that cap was sort of like maybe
like kill Switch or Slipknot, likeboth those two bands were sort of like
about as heavy it is as successfulas you can get while being that heavy.
There wasn't really anybody bigger than thatunless it was like old school metal,
which wasn't really like the same thing, but they were famous for being
(07:35):
like an eighties metal band or somethinglike a pin Terror or something Internet.
But yeah, it is. Ithas definitely changed a lot watching Lincoln Park
is is a big rock band, but they were never like metal. But
then to see a band like BringMe the Rise and sort of fill that
void of like basically all people whowere fans of Lincoln Park have sort of
(07:57):
just moved into now listening to bandslike Bringing the Rise in and it's like
they didn't really. I mean, they've gotten lighter, if you will,
poppier, but they're not staring awayfrom screaming and breakdowns and heaviness. And
I'm like, this wouldn't have beenI don't think, like on the radio
even when Prada was starting, right. Yeah, It's just it's so cool
(08:20):
to see all those bands, youknow, the data remembers, even the
Pierce the veils and stuff. Justall that stuff has moved into mainstream and
I think that is all because ofI said, mainstream streaming music. I
think like as soon as Napster Fitand all that, and people Pure Volume,
(08:41):
MySpace, all of it. It'sslowly been moving into this. Wait
a minute, we don't have tolisten to what the radio is playing.
We can actually discover our own music. And I think now just I've always
had this thing where I think peoplewill always go heavier, but they hardly
ever go lighter. So I thinknow that there's more music out there and
(09:01):
there's more available options, heavy musichas sort of moved up because more people
will tend to lean towards something heavier. And I think I think nowadays seeing
all these bands, I mean thatexactly what you're saying. Knocked Loose,
I didn't know that. I sawthat after the fact. I was like,
wait a minute, Knocked Loose atCoachella, I was like, how
(09:24):
big is heavy music getting? Man, it's been a crazy week for every
music because that happened. And thenDemilovado posted about Body Snatcher, which is
fucking insane. Daughtry covered sleep Tookenat a show like yeah, yeah,
like what's happening? Like it's insane, dude, Yeah, I don't know.
It's it's just so interesting because I, like, I was very involved
(09:48):
with music for a long time. Then I just sort of kind of fell
away from it and started thinking moreabout Star Wars and podcasting in like a
different group of community, if youwill, only in like recent years,
if I sort of like kind ofcome back and been like, Okay,
well where are we at? Andand all the time, it's consistently surprising
me of saying, like, man, some of these bands got like really
(10:09):
big. My buddy Tyler Smith,he does a lot of producing for bands,
and he does this one band,um I Prevail, which I'm sure
you probably as yeah, and likeI'm always like, man, I you
know, I remember learning about thatband when they first started. But then
like he's like, hey, youknow, I'm nominated for a Grammy for
(10:30):
I Prevail, And I'm like what, yeah, I'm like, yeah,
that is so awesome, dude. And then I listened to it and I'm
like, this is heavy, man, this is like competing it for Grammys
and stuff. This is so nuts, which I know, like there's been
a couple other bands like under OathI think has gotten nomination since Code,
Like some of that stuff is likefor their artwork and stuff, which is
(10:52):
all very deserving, but you know, you like to see it when it's
like best rock album, you know, knocked Loose or what you know,
exactly right. Yeah, yeah, that's just it's sick. It's so cool.
Yeah, because in a way, like I'm not part of the music
industry anymore, but I still feellike there was a time where me and
(11:13):
my friends were sort of like workingtoward that goal that we thought we would
never see happen. And now likethe bands after us have sort of achieved
that, and it's like, great, that's cool. I love to see
it. I cannot be happier forthose dudes and heavy music as a whole,
because it's it's pretty incredible. Anotherkind of surprising, not surprising.
(11:37):
I think it just kind of becauseit dropped out of nowhere. Everyone was
stoked on it. But Better Loversthe new band featuring Jordan Goose and Mitch
from Every Time I Die, Gregfrom Dillinger, Escape Plan, and Will
Putney. If you don't know WillPutney and you're involved in heavy music,
he's produced every heavy band that youlove in the last decade. He also
writes everything and Fit for an Autopsyand he's an end as well. But
(11:58):
they just released their first thing thirtyunder thirteen and then they announced they're going
on tour with under Oath The GhostAside, and we came as romans.
It's kind of what you would expect. It sounds like an every Time I
Die song with pieces of end init, with the singer of Dillinger singing
over it, so it's awesome.I always I've always been so fascinated with
(12:20):
the concept of a superband, Like, first of all, like I know
how they come together, but I'malways like, how did that come together?
Like at what point do you say, you know, hey, person
who's very committed to your successful band, like come over and play with me
and be in another band with theseother people. You know. It's always
it's always really cool when you seesomething like that happened, where a bunch
(12:41):
of really talented people can get togetherand they put on an album and it
somehow also works. Tours coming upnear me the summer, so I'm stoked
to check that out. I've seenThe Ghost Aside twice since they came back
their first WESTCO show and their firstEASTCO show, so I'm pretty stoked they're
even touring because I knew they didn'treally know if that was gonna be a
possibility. So just see them beingable to do that is really cool.
(13:03):
So I'm still to that. Andthen the last thing on the music front,
Spearbox released a new single called TheVoid. It's a pretty much all
singing in this one, which isa little different from them. I mean,
they've they've always had that singing factorthat played in but it's not like
I would say the vocals are moremainstream than other stuff, but the instrumental
is kind of like their EP asthey put out last year. I believe
(13:26):
it's like super kind of weird electronictrancy, kind of metal. It's pretty
cool. So if you have notchecked out that, if you like Spearitbox,
you'll like the single. I thinkonto the nerd news. Mia Goth
the new horror scream Queen been insome very successful horror franchises in the past
year, including X Pearl and thenshe was in Finity Pool this year,
(13:48):
is apparently joining the cast of Blade, which I think is a very high
sign for this movie that they'll bedefinitely leaning into the horror direction, may
even going in the more adult direction. Maybe more are skewing. We can
hope. I know that the Bladekind of Camp has went through a lot
of things. They fire the director, they've been revamping the script, which
(14:09):
I have said, I think it'sa plus because they know we gotta get
this right, so we're gonna getthis right. And having her joined this
someone who's been such a genre specificactress almost I was shocked when I read
this because I was like, Wow, she's going into ip stuff. Now,
that's interesting. So I feel likethe pitch, her character and even
(14:31):
whatever she read of the script hadto have been enticing enough for her to
sign on to this. I knowwe were talking a little bit before this,
and you weren't even really familiar withme a goth, so I'm excited
to hear your perspective on this alittle bit. So what do you think
about this addition to Blade? Yeah, I mean I have a five year
old, so for the past fiveyears, it's been hard to go to
(14:52):
movies, and it's also incredibly hardto even watch something as simple as say
Stranger Things at the House because he'sin the room, you know, And
I'm like, I wanted to putthis on the TV. And so in
this very specific example of like popularartsy horror, it's like all the things
(15:16):
that just are not going to beon my radar right now, you know.
So I saw I saw this andI was like, Mia Goth joins
Blade, and so I looked herup and I'm like, okay, um,
exactly what you said it was.It was what I gathered. I
was like, Okay, So she'sbeen in a few big horror movies,
but very specifically, she's not likean actress who has been popping up in
(15:41):
a lot of things, and herhorror movies are probably her most well known
or well received. It's like shereally is sticking with horror, like and
she just does that and that andthat and that, you know, and
uh and I was like okay.So then the news that she joins Blade
is almost like someone who who onlydoes action movies is now doing like the
(16:03):
next Fast and Furious or something. And you're like, oh, okay,
I can definitely see the direction thatthey're going. It's going to be heavily
involved in this type of fighting orsomething because they got the guy from Blank
or whatever. And you point thatout that that definitely says a lot about
the direction that Blade is going. If a not only they reached out to
her, but be she accepted. She said, yes, I'm here to
(16:29):
advocate for horror, which she hastalked a lot about the Oscars and Academy
Awards and stuff, and they don'thow there's not a lot of love in
that world for this genre. Soshe's all in on this, and I
think moving to Blade is another wayto make this horror genre even more popular
and more mainstream. I think ifMarvel is going to put their foot into
(16:53):
that category for this pocket of theiruniverse, that she would be someone who
would lead that as well. AndI was like, all that makes so
much sense, and you start toget a better picture of what they might
be going for when it comes tothe revamp of Blade in the new MCU.
It sounds exciting to me. Itmade me even more positive about Blade.
(17:15):
So I'm really stoked what they're goingto do with this, and I
hope it is. They're They're kindof just like, we gotta go ball
to the wall. We need somereal adult stuff, and Blade would be
one of the ones they're doing.I mean, I know they're already doing
Deadpool three, which is gonna berated R because they're not going to take
away from the trajectory. It's alreadybeen on, so it's like, why
just keep one thing in that youcan expand into other ways, and so
(17:36):
we'll see where they go with it. A last piece of news, we
got a small little teaser for thenew movie in the Monster Verse. It's
Godzilla x Cong the New Empire, and we got the short little teaser pretty
much I think teased the villain orone of the villains of the movie.
It seems to be a form ofanother primate with the red coloring, and
(17:59):
it looks like Godzilla and Conquered ateam up, which makes sense after Godzilla
Verse Cong they kind of team upat the end of that spoiler. Sorry
if you have seen it for themovie that came out like three years ago.
But these movies are usually pretty fun. The worst part of it usually
is the human aspect. It's usuallyall about the fights, you know what
I mean. So it seems likethey're gonna give us this tenfold with this,
I would imagine. So are youinto the Monster Verse at all?
(18:22):
Does this excites you at all? It's come in March fifteen, twenty twenty
four. I remember watching Godzilla andsort of being in that same boat with
everybody saying the movie was cool, but it didn't have enough Godzilla. And
when Godzilla is on screen, it'sfreaking awesome, like and like the end
of that movie where like again we'respoiling, but like you know, he
(18:47):
opens up the mouth and he blastsdown. It's like it's so unexpected and
so cool. It was like ahuge cinematic experience in that in that movie,
and I was then saying, well, what are they going to fix
moving into King the Monsters, Andto me, I think they didn't cut
(19:08):
down any of the people's stuff. They just made the movie longer and they
just added more monster stuff. Andso I'm like, okay, so now
it's like fifty fifty and that's probablyas good as you're gonna get. And
then Godzilla con came out, andI also felt it was sort of similar
in that regard of like it wasprobably fifty fifty but most predictable ending.
(19:30):
I mean, they say, oh, they're gonna do a Godzilla versus Kong
movie, and you're like, oh, well, they're gonna tie or they're
gonna like team up or whatever. At the end, there's no way they're
ever going to choose a winner. So so it just it's kind of is
what it is. But I alsoremember being excited about that particular movie because
that was coming out right at thattime when Warner Brothers was doing the deal
with HBO where all the movies weregoing to come out on the streaming service,
(19:53):
and I had never had HBO upto that point, and I still
have HBO today. You can partiallythank Godzilla vers Kong for me having this
like multi year subscription, because theytotally sold me on, Hey, this
is the slate for twenty twenty. We're gonna be doing Matrix Revolutions, We're
(20:14):
gonna be doing Mortal Kombat, We'regonna be doing Godzilla Verskong, We're gonna
be doing you know, like thismovie and this movie in this movie.
And it was just this huge listof blockbusters and they were all coming out
like once a month, and Iwas like fifteen bucks, Yes, absolutely,
and I remember like each one whenthey came out. I was like,
all right, let's do this. This is the big movie that I'm
(20:37):
one of them was Dune. Iwas like, yeah, I was able
to go to the theater and watchDune and come home and watch it on
the TV. I was like,I was like this is incredible. When
has this ever happened in your entirelife that you could just like go watch,
you know, like if you couldgo watch Force Awakens and then go
home and have it on your TVimmediately, it would be nuts. Like
(21:00):
it's just what had to happen becauseof the pandemic. But I hold Godzilla
and cong in a special place inmy memory just for that reason. On
to now watching sections. So obviouslywe've been watching The Mandalorian. What else
have you been watching the past weekor so? I mean Ted Lasso,
That's that's the other thing. Haveyou seen the latest episode? I have
(21:21):
not, because we do our Resistancebroadcast recording on Wednesday nights, so The
Mandalorian has to take precedent in that, and usually I watched with my family,
so it would be Thursday night. But we're actually recording right now,
so it might be after this recordingsession that we go watch it, or
(21:42):
we might wait. No, we'renot going to wait for tomorrow because tomorrow
we're going to see Mario. Oh. I still haven't caught that yet,
and I need to. I've heardvery good things. Yeah, I'm kind
of excited because I feel that Icalled it very early on that that was
I was like, that movie haseverything that it needs to make a billion
(22:03):
dollars yep, I said similar things, and it's on its way right now.
Yes, like I said that fromthe moment. But TV ted Lasso,
I recently sort of decided that Iwas going to get into sports,
and I chose soccers my sport, and Lasso has like sort of lined up
with that. Now that I've donethat step, I can now watch that
(22:26):
show with another sort of like personalconnection of like, oh, I've I've
gotten into soccer. So this sortof makes this show special in that regard.
But it's it's just special because it'sgood to begin with. You know,
it's a big, successful TV showwith positive vibes that came out around
twenty twenty and everybody needed it atthe time. And the latest episode one
of the best of the series. My friend texted me and said, ted
(22:48):
Lassos was it was amazing this week. So I'm excited about it. It
does that thing what ted Lasso does, where it while still feeling positive the
whole time, deals with real strightbut at the end makes you feel so
hopeful about it. So I'm gladto use the word hopeful. Yeah,
because I think I think I'm drawnto those types of things. Star Wars
(23:11):
obviously very hopeful. You have allthese people who are struggling to get by,
But the biggest thing about it isthat there's always just they can take
one more step and towards that eventualgreatness. Star Wars encapsulates that Ted Lasso,
as you just described, there's onet your recommendation I'm going to give
(23:33):
to you. It's also on AppleTV. Plus. It's called Shrinking.
It's a lot of the people behindbehind Ted Lasso. Oh is it okay?
So yeah, I'm I'm aware ofShrinking, mostly because of the Harrison
Ford connections. Yeah, because everybodyin Star Wars says, oh, Harrison
Ford, you have an opportunity tosee something new that he's doing. I
(23:53):
haven't got it yet, but Ihear that. It's fairly short episodes and
it kind of flies by thirty minutes. Yeah, yeah, real quick,
and some of the best Harrison Fordever. It is pretty insane, Like
it's just I don't know, youhave to you have to watch it.
You're you're convincing. He's so funnyand deliberate, Like you can tell he
like cares about this role, andI think that's what like really brings him,
(24:15):
Like, dude, the dude is, you know, like eighty something
years older. Over old he is, and he's like bringing his A game
in this in this show. Asfar as I've been watching, I got
to see the first seven episodes ofBarry. It's his final season. It's
Bill Hayter. Bill Hayter is behindit. He co writes it, he
stars in it. He directed everysingle episode of this season. If you
have not gotten into Barry, I'mjust gonna tell you the broad strokes.
It's basically, Barry is a exmilitary turned mercenary and then he finds out
(24:41):
his real passion in life is thathe wants to become an actor and he
thinks acting will redeem him for allof his like blood soaked past. Basically,
it's it's a really dark comedy thathas a ton of shockingly insane action
scenes in it. It's not likeaction action action each episode. Once once
it happened, you're like, WHOA, what the fuck just happened? But
(25:02):
that's the kind of action it has. And the last season is really dark,
it's really funny, it's just awesome. More and more people now that
AHBO Max has been a thing, have been obviously now exposed to shows like
this that were just HBO shows. But definitely go watch Berry. I believe
by the time it comes out,the first three episodes will be out.
And if you want to check outmy thoughts on it, you can.
I wrote a full review on Adobedot com. It does get a little
(25:26):
spoilery four seasons one through three, just a fair warning. I even put
it in the article as well, just so you know you'll get it out
of context, so maybe that won'tbother it for you. But go watch
Berry. It's fantastic. And thenanother HBO review I had it just came
out today as we're recording this.Elizabeth Olsen stars in this limited series called
Love and Death. It's basically ittakes place at the end of the seventies
(25:48):
into the eighties, and it's thissuper small church town and she decides that
she's dedicated her whole life to beinga loving mother, a loving husband,
but she deserves more, so shewants to have an affair, so she
finds another two to have an affairwith. It ends up ending in a
murder. I will not say whothe murder is who did the murder,
(26:11):
but it ends in a murder. It gets into like this court trial and
it's a pretty slow burn type show. But they don't reveal how what happens
in the events of the death untilthe very end of the series. And
it's shocked me. I was like, because it makes you think, like
this whole time, you're like,Okay, this person's out of her mind,
you know, like totally guilty, and then you find out the end
(26:33):
of it and you're like, waita second. So it really makes you
like rethinks the events of the wholeseries. It's a solid series, not
like it's hard, because the qualityof TV right now is so high.
I wouldn't say it's like one ofthe best TV shows out there, but
it's a solid watch. It's onlyseven episodes. The first three episodes debut
on HBO Max on the twenty seventhof April. So if you love Elizabeth
(26:56):
Olslan, you love kind of weird, surreal murder crime mysteries, definitely chuckles
one out and the last thing Isaw Sam and I we watched Beef on
Netflix, the AH twenty four producedTV show starring Ali Wong and Stephen Yune
and this show is fucking incredible. It's so so good. And the basic
(27:18):
premise of this is that two peopleget into like a road rage incident and
they find out who each each other'sare and they just their their whole mission
is to ruin each other's lives andthey do that. And it's comedy,
it's like dramedy comedy, definitely funnyparts, definitely some serious parts too.
(27:38):
It's wild. It's it's like,I know, the premise sign's kind of
stupid, but it is so good. It is so well acted, it
is like just so well delivered, and it really just kind of boils down
to like these two people who arejust so who live very different lives,
who are just like pent on destroyingthe other person. But it's not because
(28:00):
of the other persons, really becauseof themselves. It's a pretty like introspective,
like really well done series. Iknow it's pretty popular right now.
If you haven't checked it out andyou're on the fence, I would I
would definitely say give it a go. My wife loved it, and she's
very hard to please and very hardto get into TV shows. So if
that's not a higher bar than me, just saying it's cool. It's got
(28:21):
the sam Seal of approval, soI think that's that's the real seal of
approval. So, speaking of anothervery good TV series, The Mandalorian,
talk about this in the past fewweeks. I've been very positive on this
season. Honestly, all of theguests I've had have been pretty positive on
it as well. But the Internethas been I don't even want to say
divisive. I just want to saythe most negative they've been about The Mandalorian
(28:44):
sens its subception. That's the wayI like to phrase it, because I
don't even think it's divisive because thereis such a bigger realm of people besides
what I call the nerd bult.Obviously we've seen some negative stuff about it,
but I want to get your generalthoughts on this season. Well,
I can tell you this. Ican explain exactly what is happening with The
Mandalorian in fandom in one word, expectations. That's why was The Mandalorian popular
(29:11):
when it first got started, becausethere were zero expectations. They watched that
first episode, they saw Yoda andthey go that blew my blew my expectations
out of the water. Did notexpect that. Very good, very happy.
They watched the first season it endedwith the Dark Saber. Did not
expect them to go that route. All of a sudden, now all of
(29:33):
my Clone Wars watching and all ofthis is paying off. Did not expect
it paid off. I love thefirst season of the Mandalorian. Then you
watch the then you go into thatsecond season, which has high expectations,
and you know what they do.They basically delivered a movie. That first
episode of Mandalorian season two is afilm from beginning to end about the sand
(29:55):
Monster and all that and with CobbVamp all this. It's perfection and it
was directed by John fav It wasa Star Wars movie. We got a
Star Wars movie day one, seasontwo kicking off, and it was absolutely
phenomenal. Then people go, okay, yeah, you know, as this
season goes along, we're getting thisand then we're following it along, but
we all wait to see how itends. This show is not going to
end with anything really crazy at theend of season two, blew our expectations
(30:19):
get water. Yeah, as longif you have high expectations, that means
that most things probably are not goingto live up to them. But if
they do live up to them orexceed them, they become legendary. Mandalorian
has continually just arose above our expectationsuntil probably the third season. The third
(30:41):
season, we go, Okay, what's that first episode it's going to be
And it was a fine episode ofthe Mandalorian. It wasn't crazy, like
nothing crazy happened. It was justa good episode. And I said,
Okay, if this was a midseason episode, I think people would say
it was one of their favorite ofthe season or whatever. But it wasn't
(31:02):
a big, like huge premiere. The other thing is that when you look
at seven and eight of the thirdseason, incredible episodes, so good,
seriously, but it didn't live upto Luke Skywalker. As a Star Wars
fan, as I'm looking at thisand I'm going, those are incredible episodes.
Those deserved to be nines. Thisseason ended up ended really well.
(31:25):
I like how it all went andall that, but I think there is
a there's just this thing now thatbecause season two went that far, that
everybody was expecting season three to havesomething that was comparable or better than Luke
Skywalker played by Mark Hamill, returningafter the discourse of the last Jedi.
(31:49):
He gets to return with the GreenSaber and be the Jedi and it was
never gonna happen. And I waslike, no, like, season and
three could be a great season. But they've they've now hit a bar that
says, you know, this iswhere the show can go. So people
are saying, all right, canwe push it a little bit further?
And it's like, no, welike that. And sometimes that's just the
(32:14):
top of the bar. Sometimes people'sjust there's a high point in a series
and it doesn't mean that everything goesdownhill from there. It just means that
you could you just need to lookat the whole series and say all of
it was good, all of itwas really good, if not great,
And I think season three is justone of those seasons that goes, yeah,
another addition to a solid series. It's just hard to deal with online
(32:39):
discourse of people saying like, oh, it's the worst season so far.
I don't think it was the worstseason so far. I just think you
didn't have expectations when we saw thatfirst season, and now that you do
have expectations, season three isn't livingup to those expectations. And Star Wars
believe me deals in expectations a lot. Actually, it's so funny that you've
(33:00):
said that, And I didn't eventhink about expectations because I was really thinking
about this, especially after these lastwo episodes. I've like, really liked
this season, but I thought thelast two episodes were like some of the
best of the Mandalorian not the best, but some of the best. And
I was thinking back and I waslike, let me think about season one.
I loved season one when it cameout exactly what you said, I
had, you know, zero expectationscame in like Wow, this show is
(33:22):
really good. But I was likethinking back to the finale of season one
and I was like, this finaleis definitely better than the season one finale,
Like it just is like it's it'sit's like so much. And I
think another thing too, is thatit's so funny. I posted this on
Facebook and I was like, ifyou're going to be critical about something and
you're gonna say something has bad writing, don't just say it has bad writing
(33:43):
because you didn't like it, becausethat's not the same thing. You cannot
like it, but it can stillbe good and it can still have good
writing. Because this has been thefirst season where it was actually a continual
storyline going towards something like Season oneand season two were very much stories of
the week that ended up calling itat the end. This one was like,
very much, this is about theMandalorian people, this is about retaking
(34:04):
Mandalore. And then obviously definitely therise of the First Order, which has
been a thing in the show sincethe beginning. You know, moff Getting
is behind everything in this season, and I know some people were kind of
like, where is this season going. None of this makes sense, and
then by episode seven they're like,oh, they explained it all crazy,
It's like and that's why I triedto tell people. I was like,
you know, like the one withDoctor Pershing and Elia Kane, and I
(34:27):
was like, don't judge this yetuntil we know the whole story, and
then you can. You can sayyou don't like that episode, but you
can't really say it's filler if itadds to the story, which it did.
It did definitely add to the storyabout me. Man, I cannot
stand when people say filler drives me. They use it so incorrectly. This
one dude who and I think thiswas the reason he didn't like it.
(34:47):
He messed me, He's like, what do you think that the finale of
The Mandalorian? And I was like, honestly, dude, I loved it.
I thought it was like so muchgreat full circle moments from season one,
so much great fullscre moments from CloneWars and from Rebels, such like
massive payoffs and character growth from thoseseries, and I thought that was really
great. There's some amazing action, some amazing emotional scenes between Dan and Grogu,
(35:13):
Like, what more would you wantout of this? Like it was
the finale a bit predictable and youcould tell what was happening for the most
part. Yeah, sure, Butdid I enjoy the fuck out of it?
Yeah? I thought it was reallyfucking good. But he was kind
of saying, He's like, oh, like, I don't know, this
whole season felt kind of filler,And I was like, how it was
all a narrative story that played intoeach other. That is not filler.
Again, you can say you didnot like it, but it is not
(35:35):
filler it's at all. It's funnyto me because when I was growing up,
I was big in due to showDragon Ball, dragon Ball Z.
Yes, Yes, And I rememberlike having these discussions and like with you
know, my school friends, andwe would get online and we would learn
more about the show, and therewas this concept of filler that we were
(35:59):
like, Okay, what is that? And they would and what it What
it is is you had somebody whowas writing the anime, but then you
had the show that was going likeyou had the episode the manga coming out
like once a month, but youhad the show coming out like weekly,
and it just didn't it didn't lineup. And sometimes the show would just
catch up to the manga and they'dgo, what do we do for like
(36:22):
four episodes and so we know likewhat the story is, and so they'd
be like, I guess, justlike have them fight more like so nothing
happens in the episode. That justan episode of just fighting or or they
or exactly they go like completely offto get their driver's license. Literally,
(36:43):
that's an episode where they you know, they go and they just have to
take their driver's license and it hasnothing to do with anything. It's literally
filler. They're just coming up withstorylines just to make it to the next
thing, to fill the gaps. And so when I come over to Mandalorian
(37:05):
and I see, like you know, it doesn't even matter. Episode two
of season two, you know whatever, and somebody says it's filler. I'm
like, you don't have any ideawhat filler is. Man Like, all
of this is leading towards something. These are just these are stories that are
part of the adventure. If thiswas filler, then you would see Dn
(37:29):
Jarn going to get his driver's license. There is a few criticisms of this
season that I can kind of see, So for people who aren't into Clone
Wars and rebels, there was definitelysome information that was finally revealed in like
episode seven that we all knew waslike happening or moving towards and even us
nerds of that stature learned more information. But a lot of people don't have
(37:52):
context of like Deathwatch or Bocatan's Pass. They've kind of referenced it loosely,
which is enough for like us,because we know what happened, We've watched
it, we know exactly what's happened, and I think they could have kind
of added more context for that throughoutthe season to kind of lay it out
for those sort of fans. Butit's also kind of taking away hand holding
(38:15):
in a way. But other thanthat. I'm kind of just like I
really think it is what you said, and it is expectations, like because
this season was such a like Isaid, it was like a beautiful journey
of the Mandalorian people and of Bokatanand of Dnjarn and Grogu. It was
like because even the last guest,he's like, I kind of wish I
could see more of like Grogu doingmore things like this whole season has kind
(38:37):
of been growth for Grogu, beinglike I can hold hold it down on
my own and even him splitting upthe two fighting Mandalorians and you know,
no, no, no, likethat was like a big moment. Even
in this finale you see him helpingalong with Grogu save Grogu's life, save
Bocatan's life, and it's like that'samazing, Like what a journey from episode
(38:58):
one of the him just finding thisalmost like seemingly helpless little creature to now
they're like an actual family helping eachother fight this remnants of the empire.
Like it's pretty crazy if you reallythink about it like that way. It
really it blows my mind sometimes becauselike people will say they didn't like say
book a Boba Fett or whatever,and I'm like, I just I have
(39:22):
such a hard time understanding a scenariowhere like a Star Wars fan is watching
the show and they see like twohuts and a Wookie and a Rancorps and
Boba Fett and you know what Imean, like all this and it's like
all on screen at the same time, and they're being like, what a
boring episode, you know, AndI'm like, oh, like what are
we doing? You know, Ifeel like you could almost say the Mandalorian
(39:45):
is see three seasons, right,is going to start with a bounty hunter
who finds this child and decides thatinstead of turning it in, he's going
to take care of it and protectit. Right, And by the end
of it, he will have learnedhow to be a stronger Mandalorian. He
will have reunited all of the Mandalorianpeople. They will fight in this epic
(40:06):
battle to take back their planet. And you know, there will be like
star destroyers that come crashing down tothe ground and like you know what I
mean, And there will be thisthis new enemy that will learn about throughout
the three seasons who's rebuilding the empirefrom a secret base and he wears and
he wears this armor that is likethe best of the Empire meets Mandalorian and
(40:29):
he's like a super Mandalorian and allthis It's like you can describe all this
stuff and people be like that soundsfreaking awesome. But then when it actually
comes to screen, people are likeme and I'm like, what do you
what about? Like this is awesomestuff. And I've had a few friends
who have kind of been iffy aboutthis season, and he straight up texted
(40:50):
me and he's like, after theselast two episodes, He's like, I
don't give a fuck. This seasonwas awesome, Like, holy shit,
what a last two episodes. AndI was like, cool, thank you.
I was like, I'm glad youfelt that way because we could have
conversations. I was like, Iget some of your points, but I
was like, maybe you're looking alittle too much into it, or maybe
your expectations are a little too highor whatever. But like to hear that
and it's like, dude, Likethe aerial, like the combat in these
last two episodes, especially the finale, we're pretty insane. All the aero
(41:14):
combat. You see Bocatan flying withthe dark Saber in her hand, like
the armorer smashing these Imperial supercommandos withher hammer in the air. Dude,
like, holy shit. And Ithink a big part of the expectations was
the title of the last episode thateveryone seemed so fixated on for whatever reason,
it being called the Spies. They'relike, well, who's going to
(41:35):
turn on them? And I thinkthat narratively, if one of the Mandalorian
people turned on them in this finale, it would have been so awful,
Like it's just so pointless, becausethe whole point of it was that,
hey, I can finally unite thepeople of Mandalorian and retake this planet,
because that's what they've been dealing withfour centuries at this point, and most
of it was because of that dumb, stupid laser sword that finally got destroyed.
(42:00):
And some people are like, oh, I wish they kind of spent
more time and like kind of thesignificance of it being gone, and it's
like, no, it's good thatit's gone because they don't need that to
unite the people. And that's thewhole point of it. When it comes
to the dark Saber, I wasa little surprised that they went this route,
which is bo Katan is using andfeels like she needs the Dark Saber.
(42:22):
Mof Gideon destroys the Dark Saber andthen she goes, oh, well,
I guess we don't need the DarkSaber to reunite. The man warnings
right, that's after it had beendestroyed. What I thought would have happened
in my head. Obviously I'm competingwith, you know, the writers of
the Mandalorian who are class acts,So in my head I write it differently,
(42:45):
and I think it could have beenbetter, but it probably not.
But in my head, I wouldhave probably liked to see Moff Gideon be
the one who's obsessed with the DarkSaber, saying I need that at to
then use the Mandalorians and take themunder my control, and that that symbolizes
(43:06):
power, and for her to go, no, we don't need this to
unite, and she breaks it orshe throws it away like a Luke Skywalker
moment, and she is the personwho ultimately says, this is the problem.
Crack, you know, breaks it, and Moff Gideon's like no,
(43:29):
you know, like all of asudden now, like everything that he's been
fighting for, wanting that weapon andwanting that leader and wanting that power which
is very a villainous thing to do, has suddenly been crushed because everything he's
been working towards is now just likeout the door, because he knows that
people look up to that thing andit's and you know, as humans,
we know it's not about the thing. You know, it's not about the
(43:52):
money or the trophy or the whatever. It's it's just about people and being
able to be good people. SoI would have liked to see Bocaton be
the one that says we don't needthis or destroying the Dark Sabor or ending
that, because she's also like theprincess and the heir to all the Mandalorian
people, so it makes more sensethat she would be the person to say,
we're not moving forward with this DarkSaber thing anymore. I'm ending that
(44:15):
today. I thought it was reallywild that we got the reveal that the
clones that Gideon was working on werethe four sensitive ones, especially with now
that they have totally laid out thatproject Necromancer, which is likely the Palpatine
cloning, right thing. I imaginethey differentiated it because from the beginning we
thought, oh, that's why they'redoing it, and they're like, no,
(44:37):
that's not why Gideon had his ownagenda, which I think is pretty
interesting, but then it all kindof gets thrown away at the same time,
like almost instantaneously. But that makesme think that person will play a
factor later on, I would imagine, because he's the one who cracked the
code. So the fun theory thatI have right now, it's not my
theory. I saw it and Igo, sort of makes sense. Do
(45:00):
you think the Gideon that we sawdie was a clone? I hope not,
because there's so many of my friendstoo, they're like, he's not
dead, he's gonna be a clone. There was that weird theory about the
mustache, which I think is kindof ridiculous because he could have just shaved,
Like come on, I think itwould kind of undercut the whole ending
of this because you don't need Gideonanymore because obviously Thron's on the horizon,
(45:21):
so it's like you don't really needit. It depends how they did it,
Like I'm not gonna be fully disappointedif they do it and they do
it in a way that I'm like, okay, fine, But as of
now I'm like, that's kind ofnarratively, I don't know it would be
kind of weird to go in seasonone and we get introduced to this villain
who's super powerful, and then hewas defeated, like they crashed this high
(45:42):
fighter. And then in season twohe comes in and he's got the Dark
Saber and they're fighting, and thenhe defeats muff Gideon again. And then
in the third season he comes backand he's this big, super powerful villain
and they defeat him again, andthen so it's like in the fourth season,
like he's back again, like youknow, like, oh, like
at what point, Like I almostwish in a way, like there could
(46:07):
have been a loss in like seasontwo or something to mof Gideon somehow,
like maybe he did kill a characteror something and then like escaped, So
I wouldn't call that like defeated ormaybe he I don't know, I'm just
something something that could have helped maybemoff Gideon in that whole, Like he's
not just a villain that we canwrite off as like an annoying person who
(46:31):
keeps showing up that we have todeal with, but every time we deal
with him, we beat him.Yeah, that that is a very fair
point, because I did like howhe was behind everything in the season that
was like kind of added into likehis intelligence and how much you know he
has into everything that I really liked. But when it comes to like a
battle thing, I was like,yo, like didn't beat you last season,
(46:52):
Like there's no way he's gonna lose. I know there was some kind
of speculation because there's been that weirdrumors that patripass Gy was gonna leave the
seasons. I think it is alljust bus anyway, and they're like,
oh, what if they actually killedin Jarn, which I think would be
a missopportunity, especially with the DaveFiloni movie being announced that's going to be
the culmination. I know they haven'tconfirmed it, but it seems like it's
(47:15):
gonna be after season four. Iknow that's not like set in Stone,
but I thought I saw something somewhereabout that. I mean, I don't
know, I don't know about that, but I mean I would think even
possibly further than that, like definitely, yeah, it's possible, because it's
like even even them setting up seasonfour in this like for a lot of
it, it did kind of feellike a serious finale in ways because it
was very final. You know,it's like a very happy good moment.
(47:38):
At the same time they set itup, it's like, you know where
they're going, you know, It'slike it's it seems like it's going to
kind of go back to the formula, very hopeful ending, you know,
lighting up the forage, didn't growGoo, you know, him adopting him.
I think because I know a lotof people were kind of bummed that
it didn't tie into a soakamore. But at the same time, it wouldn't
(48:00):
make any sense because one den Jarnknows nothing about Thrown. Anytimes Thron is
mentioned in this series, den Jarnis not there. If you have not
noticed everyone watching, he is notinvolved with that. He would have no
idea what the fuck Thrown is.But him going to Carson Tiba and being
like, hey, I know youguys need help. I'm gonna help you
hunt down Imperio remnants. And that'sthe perfect way to tie in because obviously
(48:22):
he already knows Asoka. Asoka's obviouslygonna deal very heavily in finding Thron and
finding Ezra. And I think that'show you tie the two in to when
you lead to the movie. That'skind of why I think almost I mean,
it depends out season four goes,It depends out what Soca goes,
and even Skeleton Crew of to like, why would make sense to almost like
after season four that's when the movietakes place, because like narratively, you're
(48:45):
like, Oh, he's gonna behunting down to Pire remnants. He'll probably
run into Ahsoka and the Rebels crewand then they'll be like, we need
help. We need all hands ondeck to take out Thrown, And like,
what more can you ask for ina movie of Thron being the big
Bat, have all the Rebels screw, you have Mando, you have Grogu,
they fucking bring back Luke Skywalker? Why the fuck not? That's how
(49:07):
you That's how you do a StarWars movie. I mean when when it
comes to all this man, there'sa lot of speculation. I personally feel
like you're right on the sense oflike I think most people probably predicted,
Oh, they're going to lead intothe next show. That's how these shows
work. They all sort of connectwith each other. So it would make
sense if Asoka shows up with Sabineor something and that sort of introduces Asoka.
(49:27):
It didn't happen, right, ButI think now that we know that.
I'm like, this is my speculationfor the next little bit. I
think that Ahsoka will not have Mandalorianin it. I think it will just
live in its own world and beits own thing. And the next time
we see Mandalorian is going to beat the end of the year December,
(49:49):
potentially January. We don't have asolid release date. I think we heard
twenty twenty three for Skeleton Cruiser. We're thinking December, but I think Skeleton
Crew is when you're going to seethe Mandalorian return. I think that is
him going to Carson Tava saying, hey, I'm a bounty hunter. There's
bad stuff that's going on. Ifyou have any police reports, how about
(50:10):
missing children, missing vehicle? Itseems like, can you help me out.
I'm busy doing this other stuff becauseI'm Carson Tava and I'm awesome,
but I need some help. Canyou look into this? And he could
potentially show up there and you havethe kids with Grogu and we already know
that the pirate from season three isin the Skeleton Crew trailer. Oh interesting,
(50:37):
I don't know if you know thatthen I didn't. It was in
the Secret Celebration trailer. We obviouslysaw The Pirates with Gordian Chard. When
that all happened, there was theone pirate I cannot remember his name,
but he bails and says I'm outof here. Pie. Yeah, he
goes away. And then when wesaw the Skeleton Crew trailer, they show
(50:57):
him in the show. And wehad sort of heard some rumors about how
that, you know, the villainof Skeleton Crew may have already been revealed
in the Mandalorian and then it wasthe Pirates, and then it ended up
he was in the trailer and wewere like, so that was right,
that was correct. So there's alreadya connection then with Mandalorian and the villain
(51:19):
of Skeleton Crew, and they havehistory. So I think that's where that
all makes sense. Before we goout here, first off, thank you
so much for joining me and talkingStar Wars and other things of pop culture.
Please plug what you got going onwith the Resistance broadcast and anything else
you want to plug. If anyof your listeners are Solo fans, I
don't know how you feel about it, but like we are the leaders of
(51:39):
the make Solo two happen, Likewe love that movie, We completely back
it, support it, will givepoints so often about how it just had
a bad roll the Dice, butit on its own is not a flawed
movie by any means. It's it'slike perfectless Star Wars Perfection. It needs
(52:00):
more credit than it gets, andI think people just overlooked it for whatever
reason. Yeah, I would loveto see continuation, mostly because I want
to see Mall in that time period, because it's like really the only time
period of Mall you can explore anyfurther and getting more live action Mall.
Yes please, if I'm catching anybody, We do a thing called a Make
Solo to Happen Day. Oh,we don't do it every year, but
(52:21):
we are doing it this year onMay twenty third. So on May twenty
third is the day where you geton social media or any sort of outlet
that you have and just express yourlove for Solo in whatever way you can.
I love this scene, I lovethe characters, I love the creatures,
I love the writing, I lovethe music, whatever it is,
and then you just say make Soloto Happen as the hashtag. We've done
(52:44):
pretty well with it in the past, being globally trending multiple times and beening
knowledged by many members of employees ofLucasfilm, but are probably most notable.
Big thumbs up is when we gotRon Howard to retweet it and support yeah,
(53:06):
and so that that was really cool. So knowing that Ron Howard knows
that there is thousands and thousands offans that are getting online once a year
to say we love your movie andwe want to see the characters continue in
more Star Wars content is really powerful. So that's May twenty third this year.
If anybody wants to join in,that's pretty incredible. That's awesome.
